Dane Cook
Comedy stars shine on Victoria Gabriel Iglesias kicks off winter’s comedy line-up with his #FluffyBreaksEven tour at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre November 5, before Dane Cook headlines this winter’s Just For Laughs Comedy Tour, sharing the stage with friends Vinny Fasline and John Campanelli. Cook is one of the biggest ticket-sellers in the history of comedy and his 2006 Retaliation album became the highest-charting comedy album in 28 years. After being diagnosed with a brain tumor and having surgery in 2000, Fasline found an outlet for his experiences through stand-up. In 2013, he started the live stand-up comedy show Socially Awkward, now featured monthly at the famous Hollywood Improv Comedy Club. Campanelli has been dubbed a “comedian for the people” and recorded his debut comedy album Nervous at New York’s The Stand Comedy Club. Greeting the new year is the Snowed in Comedy Tour January 14 at the Royal Theatre, featuring four comedians: Dan Quinn, MC Craig Campbell, Paul Myrehaug and Pete Zedlacher, before February 4 brings Pat Kelly and Peter Oldring’s This is That, a send-up of public radio, to the McPherson Playhouse. Rounding out the season’s comedy lineup is one of the world’s favourites, puppetmaster extraordinaire Jeff Dunham, who headlines the Saveon-Foods Memorial Arena March 22 with his Perfectly Unbalanced tour – a rib-tickling way to welcome spring!

Kids’ stuff
While summer might be the season for kids, fall and winter bring their own share of family-friendly activities here in Victoria. In addition to a wide array of attractions ideal for inquisitive young minds – the Royal BC Museum is a must – and parks and beaches ideal for burning off steam, the special event calendar also has a whole host of kid-friendly fun scheduled. First on stage for the younger set is Kaleidoscope Theatre, whose full line-up opens with Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach in November. Up next? None other than Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, December 27 to 29 at the McPherson Playhouse. Cast out by her jealous stepmother and tricked into eating a poisoned apple, the beautiful Snow White must defeat the wicked queen and find her way back to the palace – with the help of seven new friends, a handsome prince, and you – the audience! Sports fans will want to mark February 23 on the calendar, when the Harlem Globetrotters hit the court at the Saveon-Foods Memorial Centre. Featuring some of the most electrifying athletes on the planet, the famed team will feature a star-studded roster for a one-of-a-kind show that is sure to thrill. Hockey fans will want to take in the action of the Western Hockey League’s Victoria Royals, packed with the next generation of hockey stars. Bringing the love of music to the younger generation, the Victoria Symphony hosts a series of children’s concerts. On January 29, pack your trunks and join the fun for Babar’s coronation! Jean de Brunhoff’s popular children’s story of one little elephant’s epic rise from rags to riches is eloquently set to music by Francis Poulenc, and expressively re-imagined by Really Inventive Stuff with all the enthusiasm and pomp worthy of a royal gathering. Under the baton of Maestro Joey Pietraroia, also on the program is the retelling of three of Aesop’s Fables: The Fox and the Crow, The Dog and his Reflection, and the Tortoise and the Hare.

Wild for a West Coast winter Vancouver Island has an unparalleled reputation for amazing outdoor adventure. From its magnificent snow-capped mountain peaks and ancient rainforests to the spectacular rugged coastline, a visit to this wild West Coast is truly an experience of a lifetime. While summer may capture the attention of many outdoor enthusiasts, fall and winter are ideal for discovering this rich coastline, and the diverse marine wildlife in the waters surrounding Victoria and the Gulf Islands, suggest the experts at the family-owned and operated SpringTide Whale Watching and Eco Tours. From November to April suit up for a high-speed adventure and head out for a wildlife tour on an exhilarating open-air Zodiac, learning about the West Coast’s natural environment from knowledgeable marine biologists, naturalists and captains. Spot sea otters and playful harbour seals among kelp forests. Admire northern elephant seals with hundreds of formidable steller and California sea lions as they gather at their winter haul out spots around southern Vancouver Island. Bald eagles, characterized by their striking snow-white head crest, return to nest in mating pairs amongst the treetops of the coastal forest. They, along with great blue herons and cormorants are just a few of the unique marine birds seen in the shallows of quiet coves and inlets. Offshore, share the thrill and excitement as pods of harbour porpoise or Dall’s porpoise are spotted darting playfully off the bow of your boat. You might also spot the magnificent tail flukes of a humpback whale or the signature tall dorsal fin of a transient killer whale during your trip. This ultimate combination of West Coast adventure and marine wildlife viewing makes a wildlife tour a must-do experience when visiting Victoria!

Canadian experience Tucked into Trounce Alley in downtown Victoria, Madrona Gallery hosts a November 5 to 18 exhibit of works by Jutai Toonoo, a man who had a commanding presence in contemporary Inuit art. With expressive, raw, personal and unidealized portraits articulating themes of religion, social issues, and his personal battles with cancer, Toonoo rarely conformed to traditional expectations. Join the gallery for an opening reception November 5, from 1 to 4pm
