hot hotdates dates Stage Struck From beloved musicals to classic Canadian comedy, Victoria’s theatres set just the right tone for summer. Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre opens its summer programming July 2 to 14 with Brighton Beach Memoirs, Neil Simon’s semiautobiographical tale following the hilarious journey of a Jewish American teen navigating through puberty and struggles with self-identity. Blue Bridge takes a musical turn next with My Fair Lady, featuring Professor Henry Higgins, Eliza Doolittle and such timeless melodies as I Could Have Danced All Night and On the Street Where You Live. From July 30 to August 25, the Belfry Theatre reprises the first three episodes of Dan Needles’ enduring Wingfield series. In Letter from Wingfield Farm we first meet stockbrokerturned-gentleman-farmer Walt The Belfry presents Wingfield as he sets up shop the Wingfield Trilogy in Persephone Township and meets his incredibly colourful neighbours – all performed to perfection by Rod Beattie, that is. In Wingfield’s Progress, Walt, nominally settled in his new home, must rouse his fellow farmers to tackle urban sprawl and hold the wolves of progress at bay. In Wingfield’s Folly, after two profit-free seasons at the farm Walt decides he must take the economic reins and turn his and his neighbours’ fortunes around. Stockbrokers taking on the economy, what could possibly go wrong?

Let's make some The international percussion sensation Stomp will make its Victoria premier at the Royal Theatre for a one week limited engagement August 27 to September 1. And even if you’ve seen the celebrated show before, you’re in for a treat with four new pieces. It’s safe to say you will never again look at supermarket carts or plumbing fixtures the same way… or paint cans, or kitchen sinks or…

noise!

A unique blend of percussion, choreography and visual comedy, STOMP has created its own inimitable, contemporary form of rhythmic expression: both household and industrial

objects find new life as musical instruments in the hands of an idiosyncratic band of body percussionists. It is a journey through sound, a celebration of the everyday and a comic interplay of characters wordlessly communicating through dance and drum. Synchronized stiff-bristle brooms become a sweeping

STOMP

orchestra, Zippo lighters flip open and closed to create a fiery fugue; wooden poles thump and clack in a rhythmic explosion. STOMP uses everything but conventional

percussion instruments – dustbins, tea chests, radiator hoses, boots, hub caps – to fill the stage with a compelling and unique act that is often imitated but never duplicated.

Robert Bateman, Long Light – Polar Bear

Showcasing the Bateman Legacy One of Canada’s favourite contemporary artists now has a premier location in which to showcase his life’s work. The Robert Bateman Centre opened this spring in the former Steamship Terminal overlooking the Inner Harbour, exhibiting the largest collection of Bateman’s work ever assembled for the public. More than an art gallery, the centre invites guests to explore their relationship with the environment and pay homage to the majesty of nature. Supported by The Bateman Foundation, the centre was created to house and preserve Bateman’s legacy, and to be a

multi-purpose meeting place for collaboration, creative thinking and networking about in-nature education initiatives. Through works spanning years and continents, visitors will explore the life of this iconic artist from his childhood to his latest masterpiece, with 160 pieces on display. “The Robert Bateman Centre showcases more than seven decades of work, motivated by our natural surroundings, life experiences and those who have brought so much inspiration to my life,” the artist says. “I can’t think of a better way to educate visitors, especially youth, on

the importance of ecology, the environment and preservation.” The centre features leadingedge technology, including a motion-sensor activated gallery of birdsong which will bring the sounds of the forest into the room as each bird featured within the artwork will call out from a series of speakers. Visitors can also use a tablet or their smart phone to activate the Robert Bateman Centre app and by scanning QR codes next to each piece of art reveal further detailed information, videos and facts about each piece within the collection.

Gorgeous Glassworks

West End Gallery, Lois Scott, Round Vessel Blown, Diamond Carved and cold worked glass.

Discover glorious new glassworks from Canada’s most celebrated artists as Victoria’s West End Gallery welcomes the annual Canadian Glass Show, a “must do event” for every summer calendar! New artist Lois Scott is proving popular among collectors already as her deeply carved works exude a manifestation of constructive and destructive forces. Utilizing an amalgam of processes, including hot and cold worked glass, carving, etching and polishing, Scott’s sculptural pieces are thick and architectural while maintaining a minimal form. By deeply carving and sculpting the surfaces her work reveals a landscape of visual and tactile interaction, following the natural patterns in the glass as well as her own sense of design and whimsy.

Celebrate Victoria’s artistic diversity Discover the capital city’s diverse arts scene August 23 and 24 when Victoria hosts the seventh annual Integrate Arts Festival. Featuring both opening and closing celebrations, a gallery art crawl, music, performance art, and independent artist displays, the festival provides an excellent opportunity to discover Victoria’s art galleries and organizations and meet the city's artists, curators and musicians. are easy to find

Kids will love the Oak Bay Marina’s resident seals that come to the dock in Oak Bay each day (buy packets of frozen fish from the marina store to feed them), and look carefully – you may also spot otters looking for a snack. Oak Bay Recreation Centre boasts one of the city’s best family-friendly pools, take the kids for a round at the Par 3 Henderson Golf Course, or taking in one of the many community events planned throughout the year. Oak Bay is known for its heritage homes, beautiful residential gardens and lovely parks. Enjoy a heritage walking tour or stroll the numerous “secret” paths linking local neighbourhoods, take in the view from Anderson Hill Park or step back in time at the Second World War observation platform still standing at Walbran Park on top of Gonzales Hill – don’t miss the panoramic views of Victoria, the Olympic mountains and the Salish Sea. Urban delights are found along Oak Bay Avenue, where you’ll find restaurants, boutique shopping and wonderful art galleries with ever-changing exhibits of work by Canadian and international artists. Estevan Village is also worth a visit, with shopping and dining just steps from the children’s play park and sandy shores at Willows Beach, a favourite among locals for generations. hot dinING Enjoy a Taste of Victoria From its delicious spot prawns to locally raised bison, there’s a lot to like about Vancouver Island’s food scene. Help celebrate the best of local producers and purveyors at the fifth annual Taste: Victoria’s Festival of Food and Wine, July 25 to 28. The popular summer festival opens with an evening tasting of more than 100 BC wines and local cuisine prepared by top Vancouver Island chefs. Tasty highlights of the weekend include Friday’s Sustainable Seafood: Taste and Learn at Finest At Sea, Tea and Terroir with Tea Master Daniela Cubelic, and Saturday’s Swine and The Vine at The Pacific Restaurant – delicious!

Mediterranean flavours Downtown’s Magnolia Hotel & Spa welcomed spring with the addition of the new Catalano Restaurant & Cicchetti Bar, inspired by the Mediterranean cuisines of Italy and Spain. Drawing on the distinct regional variations of cuisines from Mediterranean regions, in particular Venice (cicchetti is the term for Venetian tapas) and the Spanish coast, menus are bursting with flavour and colour. In addition to lunch, dinner and cicchetti menus, the Catalano bar program includes an interesting wine list with a focus on both BC and international winemakers, as well as traditional and custom cocktails, with added touches including house-made bitters and vermouths.

5 Family-friendly favourites 1. Old Spaghetti Factory – yummy pasta right downtown. 2. Haultain Fish & Chips – picnic perfect. 3. The Roost – great food, funky location! 4. Big Wheel Burgers – great for kids and grown-ups. 5. Galloping Goose Grille – a real find in the West Shore. 32
