hot hotdates dates Stage Struck From beloved musicals to classic Canadian comedy, Victoria’s theatres set just the right tone for summer. Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre opens its summer programming July 2 to 14 with Brighton Beach Memoirs, Neil Simon’s semiautobiographical tale following the hilarious journey of a Jewish American teen navigating through puberty and struggles with self-identity. Blue Bridge takes a musical turn next with My Fair Lady, featuring Professor Henry Higgins, Eliza Doolittle and such timeless melodies as I Could Have Danced All Night and On the Street Where You Live. From July 30 to August 25, the Belfry Theatre reprises the first three episodes of Dan Needles’ enduring Wingfield series. In Letter from Wingfield Farm we first meet stockbrokerturned-gentleman-farmer Walt The Belfry presents Wingfield as he sets up shop the Wingfield Trilogy in Persephone Township and meets his incredibly colourful neighbours – all performed to perfection by Rod Beattie, that is. In Wingfield’s Progress, Walt, nominally settled in his new home, must rouse his fellow farmers to tackle urban sprawl and hold the wolves of progress at bay. In Wingfield’s Folly, after two profit-free seasons at the farm Walt decides he must take the economic reins and turn his and his neighbours’ fortunes around. Stockbrokers taking on the economy, what could possibly go wrong?

Shakespeare and an outdoor stage just seem made for summer evenings. The Greater Victoria Shakespeare Festival brings live, outdoor theatre to Camosun College's Lansdowne Campus July 17 to August 17. This summer, enjoy two favourites, Measure for Measure and the Merry Wives of Windsor.
The Busk stops here Hit the streets to take in the thrills and chills of the third annual Victoria International Buskers Festival, welcoming professional street performers from around the world July 19 to 28. The festival will feature performers from Japan, Australia, Sweden, the UK, Canada and the US, including many performers who have worked extensively with the Cirque du Soleil. With seven stages and 20 “Busk Stops” there’s plenty to see. Show your appreciation to the performers by casting your vote for the RE/MAX People’s Choice Award – the winning act receives $1,000!

Make a Splash! Join the Victoria Symphony for one of summer’s greatest hits: Symphony Splash, August 4 in the Inner Harbour. With family entertainment beginning at 1pm, this full-day spectacle concludes with an open-air evening concert with the symphony musicians playing from a barge on the water. The dramatic finish with the 1812 Overture – complete with cannon fire and fireworks – is not to be missed. Can’t make Splash? Symphony musicians will also perform in a series of outdoor concerts at Butchart Gardens: Salut D’Amour, July 23; A Night at the Movies, July 28; and In Nature’s Realm, July 31. All concerts begin at 8pm. Additional performances are planned in the week leading up to Splash, with VS Presents: “Expect the unexpected at lunchtime concerts at Centennial Square July 29 to August 2.” All performances begin at 12pm.

Little Deuce Coupe...and more It only drives into downtown Victoria once every three years but for classic car buffs, the wait for Northwest Deuce Days is more than worth it! While more than 900 cars are expected in town July 19 to 21, the premiere event for spectators will be Sunday, when the show sets up around Victoria’s Inner Harbour and Legislative Grounds. Deuce Days is open to all cars and trucks up to 1951, with preferred parking for 1932s.
Time for a Tattoo The Pacific Tattoo will march into the Saveon-Foods Memorial Centre July 13 and 14, bringing with it hundreds of performers from Canada, Europe, Australia and the US. The event will showcase military and civilian performers in marching bands, drill teams, dance teams and skills demonstrations, plus what is sure to be a highlight of the evening, the Massed Pipes and Drums, which this year will feature a line-up 100-strong. The two-hour production will also include a celebration of police and firefighting services, including the Australian Federal Police Pipes and Drums.

For local flavour it doesn’t get any better than the 19th annual Vancouver Island Blues Bash, August 31 to September 2. Head to the all-ages outdoor stage at the Inner Harbour for free afternoon performances from some of the Island’s best blues, soul and R&B bands. Two evenings of ticketed performances welcome legendary blues guitarist Duke Robillard (above) and a twin bill featuring two of Quebec’s best blues bands, the Stephen Barry Band and Adam Karch.

Two smaller but equally entertaining events follow in August – the Bowker Creek Brush Up in Oak Bay and Art and Music in the Garden, at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific. In Sooke, about 40 minutes from downtown, the Sooke Fine Arts Show is the Island’s longest-running juried exhibition – help celebrate 27 years at the Seaparc Leisure Centre July 27 to August 5.

Fort and a main stop during the gold rush, through modern times, Victoria has enjoyed some colourful characters whose exploits make for some exceptional stories. Explore these and more with local historian John Adams, whose Discover the Past walking tours include the always popular Ghostly Walks and Chinatown Walks. New for July and August – and perfect for living local – are Discovery Walks, historical walking tours exploring eight themes ranging from Emily Carr to Memories and Mysteries. For historical tales connected to the grand dame of Victoria hotels, the Fairmont Empress, Walkabouts Historical Tours offers a 90-minute drop-in tour daily at 10am. Let's make some The international percussion sensation Stomp will make its Victoria premier at the Royal Theatre for a one week limited engagement August 27 to September 1. And even if you’ve seen the celebrated show before, you’re in for a treat with four new pieces. It’s safe to say you will never again look at supermarket carts or plumbing fixtures the same way… or paint cans, or kitchen sinks or…
noise!
A unique blend of percussion, choreography and visual comedy, STOMP has created its own inimitable, contemporary form of rhythmic expression: both household and industrial
objects find new life as musical instruments in the hands of an idiosyncratic band of body percussionists. It is a journey through sound, a celebration of the everyday and a comic interplay of characters wordlessly communicating through dance and drum. Synchronized stiff-bristle brooms become a sweeping

orchestra, Zippo lighters flip open and closed to create a fiery fugue; wooden poles thump and clack in a rhythmic explosion. STOMP uses everything but conventional
percussion instruments – dustbins, tea chests, radiator hoses, boots, hub caps – to fill the stage with a compelling and unique act that is often imitated but never duplicated.

Robert Bateman, Long Light – Polar Bear
Showcasing the Bateman Legacy One of Canada’s favourite contemporary artists now has a premier location in which to showcase his life’s work. The Robert Bateman Centre opened this spring in the former Steamship Terminal overlooking the Inner Harbour, exhibiting the largest collection of Bateman’s work ever assembled for the public. More than an art gallery, the centre invites guests to explore their relationship with the environment and pay homage to the majesty of nature. Supported by The Bateman Foundation, the centre was created to house and preserve Bateman’s legacy, and to be a

multi-purpose meeting place for collaboration, creative thinking and networking about in-nature education initiatives. Through works spanning years and continents, visitors will explore the life of this iconic artist from his childhood to his latest masterpiece, with 160 pieces on display. “The Robert Bateman Centre showcases more than seven decades of work, motivated by our natural surroundings, life experiences and those who have brought so much inspiration to my life,” the artist says. “I can’t think of a better way to educate visitors, especially youth, on

the importance of ecology, the environment and preservation.” The centre features leadingedge technology, including a motion-sensor activated gallery of birdsong which will bring the sounds of the forest into the room as each bird featured within the artwork will call out from a series of speakers. Visitors can also use a tablet or their smart phone to activate the Robert Bateman Centre app and by scanning QR codes next to each piece of art reveal further detailed information, videos and facts about each piece within the collection.

Neighbourhoods INNER HARBOUR / DOWNTOWN The Inner Harbour is the most often photographed and most easily recognized place in Victoria, and home to several renowned landmarks, including the Legislative Buildings and The Fairmont Empress Hotel. Nearby, Bastion Square is the site of the original Fort Victoria and currently home to great shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the Maritime Museum. Other
downtown attractions include the Royal BC Museum, the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, The Bateman Centre and the Victoria Bug Zoo. Shoppers will love Government Street, LoJo (lower Johnson Street), Fort Street and the Bay Centre. Take in views of the Inner Harbour with a stroll along the pedestrian walkway beginning near Belleville and Menzies streets and following the waterfront over the blue Johnson Street Bridge into neighbouring Vic West and Esquimalt. NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and are within easy walking distance. Just south of downtown, James Bay is Victoria’s oldest residential neighbourhood, bordered by water on three sides and Beacon Hill Park on the fourth. Beacon Hill has been Victoria’s best-loved green space since the 1850s, with pathways, gardens and a seasonal children’s petting zoo. On the east side of the park is Fairfield, a residential neighbourhood with a trendy collection
