hat does summertime in Central Florida mean? These sultry months see more visitors to our area than any other time, and yet, the city embraces an even more laid back vibe, with fewer events, so that we can just enjoy all that Orlando has to offer. What’s on the agenda for this month? We’re looking forward to some of the best Independence Day celebrations around, as well as tons of concerts, and even a festival or two (p. 8). Also, just because school is out, that’s no excuse to neglect education. For grown ups in your group, consider checking out one of the many ways around town that you can improve your booze IQ (p. 10). Speaking of town, have you been to Downtown Orlando lately? Once a bustling area for tourists, the city center hasn’t been much on the radar of visitors in the last few years, but that’s changing. Check out our One Block One Day recommendations for why you should make time to get to know The City Beautiful proper (p. 13). Finally, I wouldn’t be performing my editor duties responsibly if I didn’t remind you to be careful out there. Like our model above, be sure to wear your SPF 50 hat and shirt, and drink plenty of water between those cocktails. I promise, you’ll thank me later. Enjoy!

WINTER PARK, Fla. — Of the many unexpected pleasures awaiting visitors to Central Florida, none may be as dazzling as a stroll through the galleries of The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. The Tiffany collection at the Morse includes the designer’s jewelry, pottery, paintings and art glass, as well as his famed leaded-glass lamps and windows. Highlights include the restored ByzantineRomanesque chapel interior that Tiffany designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and art and architectural objects from his celebrated Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall. The Morse was founded by Jeannette Genius McKean (1909–89) in 1942 and named for her industrialist grandfather. She and her husband, Hugh F. McKean (1908–95), the Museum’s director until his death, built the collection over a 50-year period. In 1957, when a fire ravaged Tiffany’s Laurelton Hall, the McKeans salvaged all that they could from the ruins for the Morse. In the Museum’s galleries, visitors will also find exhibits of American art pottery, Art Nouveau furnishings and objects, and late 19th- and early 20th-century American paintings. For more information, call (407) 645-5311 or visit www.morsemuseum.org.
