WESLEY HARROP - YCN SUBMISSION
BRIEF “Create beautifully designed limited edition bottles to engage customers and raise money for Malaria No More UK” We were asked to create or design a set of 4 limited edition bottles that would raise awareness for Malaria no more UK, each bottle would consist of an intertwined yet slightly different design containg a selection of 4 countires within regions most affected by Malaria. They were narrowed down into 5 regions which included areas such as Africa and Southern Asia. Our designs had to adhere to the standards and limits set by Fever-Tree which included guidlines stating our work should work to a wrap design that adheres to the current footprint of the 500ml Tonic bottle that was provided. Examples of the bottle within the packs provided also stated that the brand name and Malaria guidlines and information had to be clearly visible so that the bottle still upheld its clarity and didnt look completley different. “Whilst each bottle should have its own look and feel, they also need to look they are from one collection - and part of the same family” We were told that the design must be ‘Beautiful and Sophisticated’ within style and not child like in any way. This is one thing I tried specifically to uphold was to Establish the drinks target market. on further instruction we were advised the age we were attempting to entise was between 35-65.
RESEARCH
My research began by looking into limited edition bottles either in shops or through secondary sources. My initial research presented me with art work completed by a whole host of artists. Warsteiner was the stepping stone to ideas and sketches that I intially created. Taking inspiration from the artwork and molding it into my own through sketches and ideas. I then went on to develop my ideas within photoshop and struggled to create the designs I was hoping for within adobe suite. I went back to the drawing board and researched into Absolut Vodka bottles , in which I new have always produced limited edition bottles specifically based around select countries and continents. On further inspection i found the use of animals would be something I could invest my design into, the use of an inanimate animal on the front or wrapped around the bottle would make for interesting results.

INITIAL IDEAS
I began by laying down shapes that would represent a combination of the harsh weather in africa ie. a dry floor and merged that together with an image I was refrencing of a Mosquito’s wing. I feel the overall outcome provided enough subtle information and character to be considered as one of the four individual bottles.
Referencing Malaysia as a figurepoint, I decided that the use of flowing shapes was my best option to create something that was visually pleasing.
Using South Asian patterns and flowing coloured shapes would be the technique used to show of and entice customers who approached the bottle shelved.
Similar to my previous sketch I combined my design with free flowing shapes and the intriquate patterns that are provided from a wide array of insects, including Mosquito’s.
Although very similar to the previous design it has its differences by not using the wings from a mosquito as initial referencing .
REFINEMENTS Following my intial sketches and reseach I began narrowing down my ideas so that they consisted of wildlife instead of free flowing shapes and movement. Reasons behind this is so that I could base each bottle on something that would be more than just a throw away element. The basis of my designs is to show elegance through animals that are either, Endangered or special in some form. Some of these animals included that were not portrayed in my work consisted of Wildlife from various countries within the regions provided. “Look premium, beautiful and visually engaging”. This statement became something that I tried to uphold throughout. My designs were refined down to 4 single Animals that are either represented in there country as special or unique. these were then accompanied by Text of the chosen country they are situated in and combined with a minimal yet effective slogan ‘Limited Edition’. These images were hand drawn from primary sourced references and then scanned and edited through photoshop, adding highlights to whiter areas and darkening out areas that should be black I was able to create something that would look like a flat image and worked effectivley on my edited bottle. I debated between the uses of colour and the combination of Yellows and Golds to create a look and feel that as stated previous would be more elegant. but i decided against is and went for Glossy Black.
COLOUR
TEXT
Showing how I edited the text provided by adding a bevel and emboss it allowed the text to stand out within the final image when veiwed as a high resolution image. The final result when printed will have an outer bevel and will be raised to add al elegant yet edgy look on the outer bottle. The size of the text on each bottle will depend on the word length and how each word will sit within the frame and pattern.
FRONT LABELS The front label was something that I worked on over countless times and changed again and again. initially intended to be extremely simple with the use of bold shapes and foreground images I decided to make more intricate by adding things such as patterned backgorund and black outlines .
Combining the design and pattern with each animal I feel worked well. my intentions were to use a pattern that would work well as a stand alone background and would also add some style and substance to an otherwise bold image that consisted of many block colours.
BACK LABELS The back consisted of a hand drawn label in which I copied specific information that was needed to make the bottle realistic in terms of Nutritional Facts and ingredients . Other things such as ‘Tonic Water’ and information provided through Fever-Tree were also kept exactly the same as the other on the shelf bottles. “Did you know? Mosquitoes are the deadliest animal in the world. Far deadlier than the animals people tend to be scared of like sharks, snakes and lions – even deadlier than humans. Why? Because mosquitoes transmit diseases like dengue fever, Zika, yellow fever, encephalitis – and malaria, the deadliest of them all.” I also added a paragraph from ‘Malaria No more UKs’ Website which was the main inspiration for my ideas behind using animals as a focal point. This paragraph was first seen while researching and gathering information so that I could begin putting pen to paper. The paragraph was condensed to fit neatly within the back label and big enough so that consumers can see it clearly.
FINAL DESIGN My final Design was a combination of the processes used through research and development, combining things such as methods of colour and elegance through living things such as animals I was able to create something that would look visually pleasing. Adhering to set instructions which included keeping the basis of the logo/front of the bottle similar to the original was something I think I achieved. Each bottle has its own unique feel while as a group they feel unified, they work well within a packaged design and if intended as shown previously will work extremely well with other colours, which are intended for different flavours of Fever-Tree drinks. I feel as though the limited edition bottle is a classy touch to an already well sought after premium drink, and by using subtle colours and images the design does not overpower the real meaning, which is to raise money for malaria UK. The packaging is intended for adults aged between 35-65 and by analysing products in there target market products are not bombarded with sloagans and taglines that try to force you to do things. Subtletys within design and that age group are essential as people will tend to go for things with better value or a product/brand that they already know.
