uring the past 40 years, Whistler has developed into North America’s premier ski and year-round four seasons resort, and one of the top ski destinations in the world, leading to its selection as the host mountain venue for the 201O Winter Olympic Games. Located just 125 kilometers (78 miles) north of Vancouver, British Columbia, the Resort of Whistler includes both Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, and by any measure, it is the #1 ski resort in North America. It has the greatest uphill lift capacity by far, exceeding 90,000 skiers and boarders per hour, and its 18 mountain restaurants contain 6,972 seats. It also has by far the highest vertical distance serviced by lifts (1 vertical mile or 1.6 kilometers), with the skiable terrain serviced by lifts twice that of Vail Colorado, the second largest ski area in North America, and more than 16 times that of Aspen Colorado. This past summer has seen $66 million of new lifts installed on the two mountains, and with a ski season lasting from November through May, during which an average of 11.6 meters (38 feet) of snow falls, the Resort of Whistler is placed clearly at the top of skiing anywhere in the world.
The resort’s two mountains hold several world records and numerous top ratings by national and international media. Ski Magazine, the most prestigious and widely read ski publication in North America, in its Annual Readership Poll of the top 50 North American Ski Resorts, in recent years has repeatedly ranked Whistler #1 Overall, with top marks in Terrain Variety, Off-Hill Activity, and Apres categories. In its recent #1 ranking with 41,000 reader responses, Ski Magazine commented as follows: Sixteen huge snow fattened bowls scallop across majestic twin peaks. Punctuated with glaciers, the expanse feels like the Alps - with consistently great service, seamless lift connectivity including the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, and a lifetime of choose-youradventure skiing. Nothing else in North America compares. The mountain is an 11+... just more in every way. The slopes descend a whopping vertical mile through lush forests to a dynamic ski-tropolis as abundant as the mountains above. When the dream of hosting the Winter Olympic Games became a reality in 201O, it left Whistler with infrastructure which

no other resort in North America can match. With the Olympic Games a financial success, the cost of maintaining these legacies will continue to be paid for by the invested surplus from this amazing world sporting event. Less than 2 hours by car from Vancouver and its International Airport, and with scheduled year-round bus service, daily from the airport, as well as by regular air service from Vancouver (helicopter and float plane) in the spring, summer, and fall. With a resident population of approximately 15,000, Whistler has a capacity for more than 50,0000 overnight visitors in more than 150 hotels, condos, chalets, pensions, and bed & breakfast facilities. Whistler is an economic success story that has few equals, generating more than 25% of the yearly international tourism revenue of Canada’s Province of British Columbia. Whistler now welcomes more than 3 million visitors each year, with 45% during the ski season and 55% during the remainder of the year. For those who have skied at numerous European and North American ski resorts it
will be apparent that Whistler is unique in many ways. Perhaps most interestingly, there are no other top ski resorts in the world containing private lakeshore residences within or even close to the resort. Even in Whistler where there are 2 large lakes and several smaller lakes on the valley floor, there are only a few lakefront residences. Unprecedented in contemporary Northwest Coast art, this elaborately carved cedar dance screen is unique in both the depth of the carving and free-standing design. One of James Hart’s most important works to date, the screen represents a strong connection to the traditions of the Haida.

The Artist Originating from the Delkatla community of Masset, Haida Gwaii, Hart has worked alongside iconic artists such as Robert Davidson. He inherited the traditional title Chief 7idansuu, which had previously been carried by his ancestor, master carver Charles Edenshaw (c. 1839-1920).
The Dance Screen (The Scream Too) depicts traditional Haida beings and emphasizes the fundamental role of the salmon within their society and ecosystems. Many of the figures are shown speaking or calling out, acknowledging concern for the loss of salmon habitat due to environmental degradation.
Hart positions this major Haida artistic achievement within an uncommon postmodern context with deft reference to the iconic artwork by Edvard Munch, The Scream. This positioning makes a statement about traditional Haida life and culture, both past and present.
Both a barrier and a doorway, the work declares the existence of the spirit and human realms. When danced, the screen allows for a transition between these two worlds. 18

LIFE AT THE PARKHURST LOGGING CAMP A season working in Whistler can mean many different things. For some, a season means spending as much time as possible on the mountains; for others, it can mean settling for the next few decades of your life.
F
or those who came to work on Green Lake in the 1930s, however, a season in the area usually meant hard work on most days and recreation on Sundays. When Parkhurst Mill opened, it offered seasonal work only since the mill could be closed for up to five months a year due to snow. The mill continued to offer seasonal work into the 1930s.

Jack Nebel was one of the men who came to work for a season in 1937, the year before the mill burned down. At the time he was, as he described it, “four years out of high school, living in North Vancouver, and still looking for my first steady job.” Nebel was hired by Northern Mills as a greenhorn (meaning new and inexperienced) logger under Denis DeBeck, the “logging boss”, and his first assignment was to ride the logs down the river and keep the logs moving towards the mouth of Green Lake. When Nebel arrived at Parkhurst, he was taken over to the logging camp on the western side of Green Lake, which included a bunkhouse, a cookhouse, a Caterpillar shed and a small shack where Nebel and “Red”, the other “river rat”, would stay. The camp was connected to the mill at Parkhurst via the Queen Mary, a “crude box- like cabin cruiser” with enough power to tow logs across the lake.
Conditions at the logging camp weren’t quite as comfortable as a stay at Rainbow Lodge on Alta Lake may have been at the time. On one occasion during Nebel’s stay, the river rose and overflowed its banks, making his morning walk to cookhouse
more like a wading trip through knee-deep water. The water rose to the level of his cabin floorboards and he and Red discovered hundred of insects taking refuge under their cots. Fortunately for them, the water subsided after just a couple of days, taking the insects with it. Life at the logging camp wasn’t all work. One evening each week, some workers would hike about 8 km (5 miles) through the woods and along the railway to Alta Lake to meet the mail train. On Sundays, a day of recreation for those in the logging camp, a group would go hiking around the mountains and up towards the glaciers. This group included Nebel, Red and Ward and Keary DeBeck, two younger brothers of Denis DeBeck who Nebel remembered were university students working over their summer break. One Sunday a baseball game was organized between members of the logging camp and members of the sawmill crew on a field near the Lineham’s old mink ranch. As Nebel described it, “I don’t remember who won the game, so I guess the loggers lost!” Shortly after the game Nebel was transferred from the logging camp to the sawmill at Parkhurst. The sawmill was much livelier, housing a mix of singles and families, though it didn’t offer much more in the way of recreation than the logging camp. Having been hired in early spring, Nebel left the mill around midsummer after working for Northern Mills for only a few months. By the time he returned almost 50 years later the mill at Parkhurst was no longer operating and the area was well on its way to becoming the ghost town it is today. A client of ours purchased two town homes in Taluswood - The Heights complex a number of years ago for herself and her family. She rents them throughout the year when they aren’t in town for their winter getaway. The interiors of the units while being spacious, and having all creature comforts have become out-dated and tired. She came to us wanting to create a minimalist and clean aesthetic without being too cold. Together we created her new and vastly improved “Mountain Modern” setting.
Upgrades included c omplete bathroom and kitchen renovations, new flooring, all new fixtures, a fresh coat of paint as well as all new furnishings. Another large pa rt of updating these units was re-staining all of the existing wood beams t hat run throughout the homes. Each one had to be sanded down to the raw wood finish and then stained with the new warmer tone. When furnishing we like to use layer textures and fabrics to tone down the amount of wood that generally goes into a mountain home. It creates a real cosiness to the space that matches the new clean lines. These units are now ready for a good après ski session.
