histler is often defined by its numbers: The No. 1 ski resort in North America, two mountain playgrounds, three in-bounds glaciers. The numbers, however, only paint part of Whistler’s picture. They speak to its size and status but they don’t tell us anything about the true community at the heart of the resort. And that’s the thing that really keeps Whistler at the top of its game. That’s why people come to visit and that’s why people want to stay. Whistler’s heart is its people—the entrepreneurs that carve out ski businesses like Greg Dobbin, who co-founded the legendary Extremely Canadian. Read his story in this issue. Or the people that saw business and personal fulfilment beyond the skiing, like Jaime Hargreaves with her dogsledding tours or director Dave Mossop making movies in the mountains with Sherpas Cinema. Their stories are also part of this issue. FAQ is also your go-to guide for everything you need to know about Whistler—the best places to dine, shop, play and après. Have fun exploring and getting to know all about us! 4
Q:
What’s the idea behind the FAQ name? A:
FAQ has been hitting stands in Whistler twice a year for more than 10 years. FAQs are those Frequently Asked Questions that visitors often wonder about: Which is better, Whistler or Blackcomb? (Read on). What can we do when it’s raining? (See our Top Ten indoor options in our 99 Things to Do section). Who lives here? (Read our seven insider profiles in this issue for a little taste of the true Whistler).

hether he’s skiing with his parents and his wife Charlie over the flowy terrain at the Symphony Chair or ripping down Blue Velvet with his daughter or dropping in to False Face, Greg Dobbin is equally charged up. That’s because he’s skiing; there’s nothing more to it than that. And so, after calling Whistler home for more than 25 years, Dobbin remains mystified when he sees a line snaking back from Peak Chair as impatient hordes wait for the alpine to open and the chair to start loading. “Just ski and ride until something opens and then go!” says Dobbin. “Ten cut up good runs with all your buddies are better than one run where you are racing down, frozen from waiting for two hours, with a horde of people on your tail.” This passion for skiing, and sharing that passion with others, was the genesis for Extremely Canadian, a company Dobbin co-founded after arriving Whistler in 1991. After all, what better job than showing off Whistler and teaching people how to ski? Extremely Canadian, however, was more than a job; it was a way of life, filled with colourful characters and endless adventures. “We taught people how to ski in Whistler, which is not the same thing as skiing at Blue Mountain or skiing in Colorado or at Whiteface in New York,” says Dobbin. It’s no wonder that Extremely Canadian quickly came to represent everything Whistler—pushing it in the steeps, living it up like a local.
The road trip west, with Whistler as the final pit stop, was destined. It was through Extremely Canadian that Dobbin carved out his next career, in the film industry, getting his start through the commercial work and movies that came to Whistler in the ’90s. He has been doing that almost 20 years. His passion for skiing, however, has never waned. And so he signs off with these pearls, among others: Don’t ski on skis fatter than 100mm underfoot! Do ski with your kids! 12
PHOTO: ANDY DITTRICH / GRIP.TV
Dobbin grew up skiing at the now-defunct Glen Mountain outside Montreal where “the chairlift broke down every day it ran and they never rescued anyone.” You either jumped down or you waited. “It was,” says Dobbin fondly, “the best ski hill on the planet to ski on.”

Yes. And you’ll have to come back in the The 2018/19 winter season will see a summer to find out new gondola on Blackcomb Mountain that will take guests from the base in the why. on the mountains
Let’s try to shed some light on this by the numbers. Blackcomb Mountain is one vertical mile high. Exactly one mile. That’s 1,609 metres (or 5,280 feet) from the top of the mountain to the bottom. And that’s a lot of skiing and riding. Think of it as the “Mile High Mountain.” Whistler is marginally smaller, standing at 1,530 metres (or 5,020 feet), though it’s difficult to use the word “small” when talking about this mountain! Whistler has more than 4,700 acres of skiable terrain with 25 per cent of that advanced; Blackcomb has less at 3,400 acres of skiable terrain with 30 per cent of it advanced. Whistler has access to the always epic Flute Bowl; Blackcomb has Spanky’s Ladder. You have to hike for your turns in both. So what it all boils down to is this: There is no better mountain. Have fun figuring out your favourite! /faqwhistler

J
aime Hargreaves wants to change the world one tourist at a time by teaching them what her sled dogs have taught her.
That is: That all relationships are based on give and take, on a symbiotic energy flowing back and forth. “They want to be a part of something greater than themselves,” says Hargreaves of her dogs. “We all do. We all function as a pack. People thrive on that.” That’s just one of the lessons learned over more than a decade working her dogsledding business Trapper’s Run, which runs tours throughout the winter through Canadian Wilderness Adventures and Blackcomb Snowmobiles. And to think: Fifteeen years ago Hargreaves was sitting behind a desk, working human resources at a Vancouver logistics company, itching for a different kind of life. She took the plunge into a 10-month adventure tourism course that changed her life and ultimately led her to Whistler. When she first opened her business, relocating to a shack in the Callaghan Valley with no power and no running water, people were skeptical. “Everybody in my life told me that it was never going to work,” she says. Her life revolved around her dogs—living with them, feeding them, exercising them, working them on tours and, perhaps most importantly, loving them. “That’s when I learned to speak dog,” says Hargreaves.
PHOTO: ANDY DITTRICH / GRIP.TV
The business didn’t make any money for the first five years but Hargreaves persevered. Now, in the height of the winter season, she’s leading a team of 25 staff. The dogsledding tours are unique and intimate, designed to accommodate two people plus a child on a journey through the snowy backcountry, pulled on a sled by a team of six to eight Alaskan Huskies. Now a homeowner in Pemberton with a young son, Hargreaves is thinking a lot about the future and looking at ways to reconnect with why she got into this business in the first place—to give back to the community. She has rescued more than 100 dogs from all walks of life in the last decade. Now she’s exploring ways that her dogs can help those with post-traumatic stress or depression or addiction. “It’s just like humans,” she adds. “We all come together to work through our issues and we do that through love.” 19

I
n the winter of 1966, Whistler kicked off operations with just four chairlifts and whole bunch of grandiose hopes and dreams for the future.
As more and more people arrived in Whistler over the years, the town subtly shifted from old-school ski town to four-season mountain playground. It wasn’t long until we were heliskiing in the backcountry and cross country skiing in the valley and then snowboarding arrived, making its mark with a bang. That was just the beginning. It’s been a steady stream of adventures ever since from bungee jumping off a bridge to soaking in the hot tubs at the Scandinave Spa. While skiing is still Whistler’s raison d’etre, it’s no longer our sole passion. Far from it. What will your Whistler adventure be? Ziptreking over the forest tops or eagle watching in Squamish? Snowshoeing in deep powder or narrowing your sites at biathlon? Skating over frozen lakes or skinning into the backcountry? Whatever you decide, keep in mind one of our favourite local sayings: There is no such thing as bad weather, just poor clothing choices. 20
PHOTO: MIKE CRANE / TOURISM WHISTLER
Skiing was the lifeblood of this little mountain retreat. It was why people made the arduous journey into the mountains every weekend; in fact, skiing was pretty much the only reason why people came to Whistler in the winter. From those humble beginnings, an international ski resort was born.

I
Just picture Whistler Blackcomb’s colourful in-bounds map and multiply it by 50! That’s what heliskiing gets you. Now combine that endless terrain with no lift lines, no crowds and no one poaching your powder and you start to understand the reasons why heliskiing is top of the winter bucket list for diehard skiers and snowboarders. And there’s no better place than Whistler to check it off your list. Heliskiing has been an integral part of the ski experience here for almost four decades. It’s a rite of passage in Whistler because, as everyone who has ever done it knows, this an adventure you won’t soon forget. That deep history brings a wealth of knowledge to the experience as well as the comfort of knowing that you are in capable hands when it comes to finding the best powder on any given day. On top of the ski experience, there’s also the bonus of taking in a bird’s eye view of the Sea to Sky corridor along the way and there’s no better way of understanding the pristine natural majesty of B.C. and the special spot that Whistler holds in this province.

t’s one thing to wrap your head around the 8,100 acres of in-bounds terrain at Whistler Blackcomb. It’s quite another, however, to imagine hundreds of thousands of acres of untouched snow—all yours for the taking.

winter adventures
I
t would be easy to pigeon-hole Whistler into a ski town in the winter and a bike town in the summer. The truth is, there’s a whole world of activities beyond the obvious. Perhaps it would be more accurate to call this an adventure-lover’s paradise with year-round options to fuel your adrenalin. BUNGEE JUMPING , for example, isn’t what immediately springs to mind when you think about a Whistler vacation. It turns out this is one of the most popular adventures, winter or summer, rain or shine. The bungee bridge is set into the forest on the southern edge of Whistler. The jump takes place over the rushing Cheakamus River, a quiet magical spot whether blanketed in snow or heavy with summer’s warmth.

up high. At Superfly Ziplines you can try out the longest tandem ziplines in Canada. At Ziptrek Ecotours you can do the Sasquatch, more than 2 kilometres, making it the longest zipline in Canada and the United States (this line is open only in the summer but Ziptrek has many other tours year-round). And let’s not forget about the fastest ice track in the world at the Whistler Sliding Centre, home of the sliding events for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. In the winter you can try your hand in the BOBSLEIGH or SKELETON . In the summer it becomes Rolling Thunder, a bobsleigh on wheels with guests tucked behind a professional bobsleigh pilot. No excuses then for not getting your heart pumping while in Whistler.

ne look at Whistler Blackcomb’s ski school programs and it’s clear this mountain playground is a place for the whole family.
SKI SCHOOL is filled with eager young groms linking their first turns on their snowboards, or switching from “pizza” (snowplough) to “French fries” (skis straight) amid whoops and hollers. The idea is to create lifelong skiers and snowboarders, passionate about the sport.
With that in mind, Whistler has embraced family fun throughout the resort, not just in ski school. Take the TUBE PARK on Blackcomb Mountain. There are mini tubes and a mini-kids lane for kids ages 3 and older to get in on the action. Lanes 2-7 are for older kids and adults. For those who want to slide in a different way, the OUTDOOR SKATING PARK at Whistler 38

Families can head indoors to THE ESCAPE ROOM and put their minds to the test by combining the family brain power to figure out how to escape the challenges within. Of course, no activity in Whistler is complete with an APRÈS —one that the whole family can truly enjoy. At Family Après every Monday and Wednesday, there are no shot skis in sight but there’s outdoor entertainment, winter activities, and drinks to stay warm.

illian Ryan is equally at home whether it’s snowboarding Million Dollar Ridge on Whistler Mountain or scuba diving in the ocean off Belize or even opening her own beauty salon in Whistler.
That, she says, was an opportunity she just couldn’t pass up, though she was taking a chance and betting on her future here. Five years ago she opened Be Beauty with her business partner and it didn’t take long for it to make a name for itself among locals and tourists alike. “We call ourselves the brow queens,” says Ryan of her tight knit team at Be Beauty. “That’s our speciality. We bring you in and we give you this big bold brow with the shaping and tinting.” And it’s totally on trend. It appears Ryan has the golden touch; six months ago she, along with two business partners, opened The Corner Deli, a sandwich shop, known for smoked meat sandwiches and Vietnamese bahn mis. Like Be Beauty, she was tapping into a niche market and the community embraced it. Ryan has a familiar Whistler story: She got in her car in 2011 and pointed west.
Ryan grew up in a small town in New Brunswick where she learned to snowboard on the handrails of the Royal Bank building. It’s no wonder then, that when she got to the top of Whistler Mountain in 2011, she knew this was where she wanted to be, listening to old-school rap music while snowboarding over West Coast powder. Whistler also offered a chance to carve out an “orphan family” with like-minded friends from around the world. As for Be Beauty, as it settles into its success at the five-year mark, she’s open to whatever the future holds. “I wanted it to be able to grow as its own brand,” she says. Maybe one day, she muses, there could be a Beach Beauty too! 52

Whistler doesn’t have a name for it per se. But it’s something we put into practice all the time. We ski among the trees, we snowshoe around them, we soar over their peaks while zip trekking. Little did we know it but this has long been our way of practising “Shinrinyoku.” Even if we’re not actively “forest bathing,” Whistlerites spend a lot of time outdoors. Try it while you’re here. ot many people go through an executive business coaching course for three months only to discover that they are meant to be exactly where they are.
But that’s just what happened to Kelly Czekurlon, the long-standing manager of The Great Glass Elevator Candy Shop. Business coaching reaffirmed her love and passion for her job and set the wheels in motion for her to take over the business. Just over a year ago, she officially took the helm of Whistler’s landmark candy store, buying it from its original owner Kennedy Raine.
Part of the candy store’s charm, then and now, is that it is “like a little piece of sunshine on a rainy day.” With the colourful rows of stacked bulk candy bins—licorice, chocolate, gummies and more—it’s an adventure every visit. It has become a go-to, must-do spot for return visitors and first-timers alike. And a haven for those who may be feeling a little homesick too. Take the small British section that has been a huge hit over the years. “It’s fun to come in and be able to get something that you’re missing from home,” explains Czekurlon of its popularity. Czekurlon is subtly putting her own mark on The Great Glass Elevator, while staying true to its roots. This summer she launched a small book section, aimed at kids ages 3-5. It sold out within two weeks. Needless to say, Czerkurlon never made it to Australia with her friends after that first winter season. She met her future husband in Whistler, settled in Pemberton, had two children. “I come to work every single day happy about what I’m doing, so why would I try to change that?” she asks. “What more could you ask for?” 60
PHOTO: LOGAN SWAYZE / LOGANSWAYZE.COM
“I started off as a part-time employee,” recalls Czekurlon, who had moved to Whistler for a winter season in 2005, with the idea it would be a short pit-stop before heading to Australia with friends. “I had just moved here from Ontario and I was working at Starbucks at the time and, like everybody else, I needed a second job.”

cursory glance around Whistler Village would have you believe that the town is full of ski and snowboard shops, T-Shirt shops, and not much else. Let’s be honest, Whistler does have a disproportionate number of ski and snowboard shops—that’s what we’re all about in the winter after all. But tucked among the big ski staples, there are so many gems waiting to be discovered, some of which have nothing to do with skiing. The Village was designed with this in mind—pedestrian friendly meandering streets so that guests can take their time exploring. Get beyond the Village too. The Upper Village, just a short walk over Fitzsimmons Creek, is another great spot as well as Creekside and Function Junction. Check out the maps at the back of FAQ for more information.

here’s no better place in the world than Whistler if you’re an aspiring ski filmmaker. Take it from Dave Mossop, co-founder of Sherpas Cinema.
“It’s like being in New York for jazz; if you’re a jazz musician, you can’t really be anywhere else, it’s just where the leading edge is,” says Mossop. After almost two decades, with the last eight years based in Whistler, there’s little doubt Mossop and the team of a dozen at Sherpas are on the leading edge and are, in fact, redefining it. Their short ski film Imagination recently took home a coveted Cannes Lion award for direction in the film craft category, in addition to a Clio gold award for music and Best of the Year award by Vimeo. And that’s just some of the accolades.
PHOTO: LOGAN SWAYZE / LOGANSWAYZE.COM
What began as a dream of three Calgary high school friends to make ski movies has morphed into a steady stream of increasingly diverse, challenging and exciting projects, particularly for Mossop, known as one of the top aerial specialists in the business. One day he could be heliskiing with his camera for a new virtual reality project, another day flying in a helicopter over Iceland, capturing footage for the hugely popular FlyOver series. (He is the man behind the camera for FlyOver Canada). The next day he could be working on the roadmap for the two feature films that are quietly in the works. “It’s just this wild animal that we’re trying to tame constantly,” says Mossop. That’s, admittedly, not a bad problem to have. Though the business is constantly evolving, what remains at its core is Mossop’s passion for his craft. And while his ski bum days are fewer and farther between now that he’s a father of two young boys, he’s still deeply connected to the world around him, to the things that drew him to Whistler in the first place. “We’re always trying to make sure we’re listening very closely to what nature is telling us and responding to the film that nature wants us to make,” he says. “It’s always giving you something you didn’t expect and, if you’re there in that moment with a camera, you can capture this moment.” 77

or a community whose calendar year revolves around festivals and events from Whistler Pride and Ski Festival to the Whistler Film Festival, nothing sums up Whistler quite like the homegrown legendary World Ski and Snowboard Festival (WSSF).
art scene mantras. It’s also one of the best times to come to Whistler and see what it’s all about. The WSSF has been a festival staple for more than 20 years. In that time, Whistler has honed the line-up, perfected the parties, and curated the best arts and culture events. The Pro Photographer Showdown, for example, brings together several photographers for a slideshow extravaganza of work that can make your soul sing. The 72-Hour Filmmaker Showdown is an epic rush to the editing room as crews get a mere 72 hours to film and edit a 3 to 5-minute film. The results are often hilarious, sometimes poignant, and always impressive. And there’s Art and Soul, the festival-long exhibition featuring Sea to Sky artists. Of course, it’s impossible to talk about the WSSF without also mentioning the athletes—the skiers and snowboarders tackling the Big Air competition and the amateur racers taking on the reborn Saudan Colouir Ski Race Extreme. No one says good-bye to the winter season quite like Whistler. Scott Brammer

t It was a one-liner advertisement in the back pages of Pique Newsmagazine that changed the course of Priyanka Lewis’ life. “Space for rent,” it read. Three simple words loaded with promise. The space was Three Below, a restaurant/lounge tucked on the underground level beside Whistler’s Village 8 Cinemas. “We scraped up the money together and jumped in headfirst,” recalls Lewis of the decision to get into business in Whistler with her thenboyfriend and their business partner. It was a complete leap of faith for the couple from England who first came to Whistler for a winter season in 2005. The partners signed the lease on Three Below 10 years ago, back when they couldn’t afford new signage so they simply stuck with the name. Their idea was to bring a local and affordable place to the Village. For three years Lewis worked every day, long gruelling hours, often putting in night shifts at party bar Garfinkel’s until 2 in the morning to cover her own rent. “I don’t think people had faith that we were going to survive,” she admits with a rueful smile.
PHOTO: LOGAN SWAYZE / LOGANSWAYZE.COM
Lewis and her partners did more than survive. Five years later they opened Brickworks, another restaurant/pub in the heart of the Village. Then they built on its success with Main Street Noodles. Lewis is the first to admit the journey has had its ups and downs. “I think there’s a perception that it’s easy to own a business…it isn’t,” she says. But failure, she adds, is simply not an option. As she was busy weathering the finicky ups and downs of the business in Whistler, Lewis was also carving out a life here. She married her business partner in 2010, children followed. The resort town became a close-knit community; it also became a home. “Whistler pretty much ticks all the boxes and many more that we didn’t even know we wanted or were even achievable,” says Lewis. “It is possible. If you want it, you can make Whistler your home; it just takes time and effort.” 83

DINING IN THE
Blue Room
The Four Seasons Resort and Residence Whistler, in partnership with Head-Line Mountain Holidays, has launched a dining experience unlike anything ever seen here before. It’s called The Blue Room—a five-course meal in a secret ice cave cocooned in a frozen dome of sparkling blue walls. Guests travel to dinner via helicopter. After landing on an ice cap, a massive expanse of snow stretching for miles, they are then guided into the breath-taking ‘blue room’ where dinner awaits—champagne, caviar, oysters, grilled bone-in-ribeye. Of course, Whistler has long set the standards for one-of-a-kind experiential CONTINUED ON PAGE 86

dining—snowmobiling deep into the backcountry to dine or clicking out of ski boots and into a five-star lunch in the alpine or picnicking on glaciers during a heli-sightseeing tour. For visitors who don’t want to venture too far for their meals, options abound in the Village and surrounding areas with choices in every price-point. There are award-winning fine dining restaurants that that could be just as at home in New York or London or Paris. There are quick grab and go hotspots, like the poutine made right in the Village (just follow the delicious smells). There are family-friendly and health conscious options too.
INSIDERS’ TIP: If some of Whistler’s choicest restaurants seem a little pricey, don’t despair. Whistler still has what we call “shoulder seasons,” that period of time in between our two main seasons—ski season and bike season. Shoulder seasons come with great deals at the local restaurants. Grab the local newspaper Pique Newsmagazine to check out the dining specials.
Sushi, tacos, curries, burgers, nachos— there’s a little taste of everything. And there’s little doubt that everything tastes better after a day in the mountains.

T
o the bartender who has served every drink, from the fanciest cocktails with the coolest ingredients to the choicest champagne, it begs the question: What’s your favourite drink to make?
The answer, says Scott Barber, bar manager of the Bearfoot Bistro, is easy: “The one I’m making for myself!” Joking aside, Barber says the key to a great drink is all in the ingredients, and fresh is best, whether that’s just-picked rosemary and basil or freshly-squeezed lime juice. It’s doesn’t hurt that Barber’s bar, in one of Whistler’s long-established top restaurants, is stocked full of choice too—at least 24 different gins, more than 50 vodkas, and around 75 different scotches, whiskeys, and bourbons. Not to mention, the liquid nitrogen for those smoky martinis. “It makes my job easier when you have that to work with,” admits Barber.
Then again, this is not your average bartending job. Barber has served his drinks at five-course dinners on the record-breaking PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola; he’s bartended celebrity weddings and music festivals; he’s also served in the coldest vodka room in the world, nestled inside the Bearfoot Bistro. “It’s always strange putting long johns on to come to work in July,” he says. Barber got his first taste of Whistler while on a whirlwind visit during the 2010 Olympics. It was the electric vibe and the energy that drew him back here permanently from Ontario. It wasn’t easy leaving behind family and friends, a steady job, and starting from scratch, quite literally. On day one he was told: Forget everything that you think you know about bartending; it’s time to begin again. And the lesson in that, says Barber, is simple: “You’ll never find success unless you’re willing to put yourself in a position to fail.” 98
PHOTO: MIKE CRANE / CPCIMAGES.COM
Knowing that he would one day have this creative freedom was one of the reasons why he took a job as a food runner at the Bearfoot Bistro rather than taking a bartending job elsewhere. That was eight years ago, during his first week in Whistler, and Barber hasn’t looked back since.

après & nightlife
T
he secret to a good après lies not in the cold pitchers of beer, nor in hearty food or the stellar service. It’s not even in the live music. Though all those parts add to the whole experience, the heart of a true après lies in something intangible.
Whistler has long taken top spot for its après scene when it comes to this age-old tradition at ski resorts the world over. With three different ski bases, there’s a plethora of choice. Two clicks and you’re out of your skis, sitting under a heated patio lamp, ski buckles loosened, blood flowing back into your boots. Choices range from the table-dancing shenanigans at the Longhorn to the craft beer at Handlebar to the always-reliable, steady vibe at the Crystal to the sweet spot overlooking the mountains and the Village at the GLC patio. And that’s just to name a few. When in Whistler, keep true to the après tradition and raise a glass, or two, in your ski boots. 100
PHOTO: MIKE CRANE / TOURISM WHISTLER
The secret is simply this: après is all about embracing an epic day spent living large in the mountains with like-minded people. It’s about being with friends, new or old. It’s about celebrating that feeling of being a part of something bigger than yourself. The beer, the food, the music, and inevitable shot ski, are all just the icing on the après cake.

here’s some debate as to what constitutes a “local” in Whistler. Is it the length of time you’ve lived here? Your passion for the mountains? Is it because you don’t belong anywhere else but here? Whatever the reason, so-called “locals” have it dialed when it comes to living and loving Whistler. Read up on these FAQ’s and get a sense of what it’s like to “live like a local.”

Check out the Olympic legacies at Whistler Olympic Park in the Callaghan Valley, home to a world-class Nordic facility, and the Whistler Sliding Centre on Blackcomb Mountain, one of the fastest luge/skeleton/bobsleigh tracks in the world.

relates to the weather. It’s the thing we talk about the most before, during and even after the winter season: Is it an El Nino or La Nina year? What’s the freezing level? How many cms are expected? You’ll start to understand what we’re saying soon enough, and may even become as obsessed with freezing levels as the rest of the town.
frequently asked questions Q: SPEAKING OF THE WEATHER, WHERE DO THE LOCALS SKI ON A POWDER DAY? A: As you’ll soon find out, there are no
people who fall in, even if just up to their knees. You can always play it safe and skate outdoors on the manmade rink at Whistler Olympic Plaza. And it’s free too!
friends on a powder day. Equally, no one is giving up the goods on their secret pow stashes. We will, however, say this: With more than 8,100 in-bounds acres, you’ll get your powder… and then some!
Q: WHAT IF WE DON’T WANT TO SKI OR RIDE? A: Over the last 50 years Whistler Q: WHAT IS THE 20 CMS RULE? has come to terms with the fact A: For diehard locals, this is the only that not everyone in the world wants to ski or ride. We may not fully understand it but we accept it. There is so much more to this ski town than skiing. Think snowmobiling, ziptrekking, bungee jumping, yoga, snowshoeing, dogsledding, getting out into nature and soaking up the forest and the fresh air. And let’s not forget… fully relaxing at the spa just to top off the full experience.
Q: CAN WE SKATE ON THE LAKES? A: There are five lakes in Whistler —
Nita, Alpha, Alta, Lost and Green. Typically, they all freeze over and you’ll see people cross country skiing, playing shinny and walking their dogs across the frozen surface. Make sure conditions are safe before getting on the ice! Every year, it seems, there are stories of

Q: WHERE ARE THE INUKSHUKS AND WHAT DO THEY MEAN? A: An Inukshuk is a landmark or a
cairn used by the Inuit and other peoples of the Arctic region. In Whistler, the Inukshuk was a symbol of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the welcome it represents has endured. There is a big Inukshuk at the entrance of the Village. It lights up at night, providing a great backdrop for a photo. There are also a few Inukshuks on the mountains — more great photo opps! 107
