REGIONAL GOVERNMENT

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) is a local government federation consisting of four member municipalities (District of Squamish, Resort Municipality of Whistler, Village of Pemberton and District of Lillooet) and four unincorporated rural Electoral Areas (A, B, C and D). Around the Squamish area, SLRD Electoral Area D includes the Howe Sound communities of Porteau Cove, Furry Creek and Britannia Beach, the rural neighbourhoods of Ring Creek, the Upper Squamish Valley and Paradise Valley as well as Pinecrest Estates and Black Tusk Village.

Found within the traditional territories of the Squamish, Líl'wat and St'át'imc Nations, the SLRD delivers a range of local, sub-regional and regional services to approximately 42,665 residents.

Regional Districts are a governance structure unique to British Columbia, established to provide governance and decision-making for unincorporated (rural) areas, shared local government services as well as a forum for regional collaboration and decision-making.

The SLRD is governed by a 10 member Board of Directors composed of six municipal directors (one director from Lillooet and Pemberton; two directors from each of Squamish and Whistler) and four Electoral Area Directors. Municipal directors are appointed by their respective municipal council, and electoral area directors are elected directly by their constituents. Local government elections are held every four years.

At the centre of the region is Pemberton, which is where the SLRD's headquarters is located. SLRD board meetings are generally held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the boardroom at its headquarters at 1350 Aster St. Members of the public are welcome.

Established in late 2016, the Squamish Men’s Shed Society is a work in progress. We have three objectives: to promote voluntarism and increase our membership; to respond to unmet community build requests from non - profit organizations; and to provide our members, who are seniors, with a safe and supportive social environment. Our Board and Membership meetings are held in the morning on the first Thursday of each month. Our Shed, in collaboration with the District’s Rec Services and The Better At Home Program, has organized and plans to continue offering Health By Stealth presentations on topics of interest to seniors. We also offer intergenerational woodworking

experiences to young children between ages of 5 to 11. The Men’s Shed movement around the world was set up to combat social isolation endemic to senior men and increased during the pandemic. The Shed gives men a place to do something constructive together, thereby reducing stress and depression while contributing to the betterment of our community through build projects. Please visit our website for information on our Shed including completed build projects and membership application forms.

SES focuses on natural history education and protection of our greenways, riparian areas and estuaries. Making nature an important part of our town can help ensure a healthy community for all of us, including wildlife. Our programs offer opportunities to enjoy nature and to contribute to preserving and enhancing our environment.

ESTUARY BIRD COUNT: Novice to expert birders are welcome for a half day of birding followed by lunch. Counts are usually held on the second Sunday of every month. Meet at the Brew Pub and then come out for a pleasant morning walk. Have your bird questions answered, meet knowledgeable birders, and get to know the Estuary. This group’s activity over the last twenty-five years or so has resulted in Squamish having the best set of bird statistics in BC. Bird counts are a wonderful way to get to know the Estuary and fellow nature lovers.

EAGLEWATCH PROGRAM: For more than 29 years, our volunteer interpreters have been on Eagle Run dike every winter when eagles return to feed on salmon. The program runs on weekends from mid-November until the eagles leave in January as well as during Christmas Week, welcoming visitors and helping to educate the public about eagles. Throughout the fall and winter volunteers visit schools and community groups to conduct presentations, and also welcome groups to Eagle Run dike on a scheduled basis. Volunteers welcome: no experience required. A great way to meet other volunteers and help promote awareness of the importance of our environment.

EAGLE COUNT: SES organizes the annual Brackendale Eagle Count, which takes place on the first Sunday after New Year’s. Volunteers are given special training to help conduct the count., which has been taking place for more than 33 years.

DISCOVERY WALKS: These outings generally take place the last Sunday of the month. Activities range from gentle walks to more strenuous hikes and explorations, all

led by volunteers and offered free of charge.

CITIZEN SCIENCE: This growing field is scientific research conducted, in whole or in part, by amateur scientists. SES encourages and supports those interested in research to better understand the ecology of the Squamish Valley or to promote recovery of habitat and species. A dozen projects are currently underway and many offer opportunities for volunteers.

Please go to the SES website and Facebook for more details on current happenings.

Our motto of “keeping wildlife wild - and communities safe” underscores our belief that if we can keep wildlife living in the wild we can, in turn, make our communities safer for us and at the same time keep wildlife from coming to harm. Reducing human-wildlife conflicts is accomplished by providing information about attractant management and providing education and assistance about the tools available to secure those attractants. WildSafe BC offers presentations for schools, organizations and community groups focusing on wildlife biology and behavior along with attractant management information and how residents can live and recreate safely within wildlife country.

Myths and truths about cyber security

Do you have preconceived ideas about online security? Do you think you’re safe from all the risks? Learn more about these prevalent myths.

Hackers are only interested in important people. Not true! While they may not be interested in you personally, your data is worth its weight in gold. A hacker can sell it or use this information to impersonate you and commit fraud.

Scams are usually easy to spot.

Although some scam attempts lack subtlety, others are challenging to identify. Cybercriminals can gather information about you online and use it to personalize the messages they send you. Many people don’t even notice!

Using the same password for different accounts is practical. Think about it… If a hacker gets hold of one of your passwords, they can use it to access multiple accounts easily. Creating unique passwords for each account and changing them every few months is crucial for security. For better protection, call in an IT security company.

Phishing: don’t be lured in!

Imagine you open your email inbox and see a message entitled “Urgent: package undelivered.” The email asks you to click on a link to pay for the delivery of a package. However, you haven’t ordered anything recently, and the email seems suspicious. This type of email is undoubtedly a phishing attempt. Could you recognize it? Here’s what you need to know to avoid taking the bait.

Technique

Phishing is a technique used by cybercriminals to obtain confidential information, such as social insurance numbers or credit card numbers. These cybercriminals often pose as well-known entities such as banks, streaming platforms like Netflix and companies or governments.

In most cases, scammers will email the intended victim, asking them to click on a link, open an attachment or visit a fake webpage to enter their personal information. This sensitive information can be sold to malicious individuals or used to impersonate the victim.

Scams are usually easy to spot.

Several tactics are used in phishing attempts. Beware of messages that:

• Announce an emergency

• Ask you to confirm a password to recover an account

• Offer some form of refund (e.g. taxes or undelivered package)

• Encourage you to download attachments or fill out a form

Protection tips

You can protect yourself from phishing attempts by adopting a few simple behaviours. Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments in unsolicited messages. If an email contains several spelling mistakes, be on your guard. Remember that governments and financial institutions never offer funds by email!

If you receive an email and are unsure if it’s legitimate, contact the alleged sender using the official contact details from their website (not from the email). If you suspect you’ve been the victim of a phishing attack, report it to your local police department immediately.

Travelling solo as a senior can be an enriching and liberating experience, but it requires careful planning and consideration. Here are some essential tips for embarking on a solo adventure:

• Plan ahead.

Research your destination thoroughly and plan your itinerary. Consider factors such as transportation options, accommodation suitability and accessibility of attractions.

• Stay connected.

Keep your loved ones informed of your travel plans. Share your itinerary and contact information with a trusted friend or family member and check in with them regularly.

Pack light and include essentials such as medications, copies of important documents and emergency contacts. Consider bringing a mobile phone with international coverage.

• Prioritize safety.

Be aware of your surroundings, especially in unfamiliar places. Avoid risky situations and trust your instincts. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night.

3 benefits of volunteering in retirement

You have everything to gain by getting involved!

Retirement isn’t just the end of a working life — it also brings a new reality for many people: an abundance of free time. Are you looking for a way to keep busy while doing something useful? Here are three advantages of volunteering in retirement.

• Improve your physical and mental health

Volunteering often involves physical activity, which can help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels in the same way as playing sports. It’s also a great way to reduce stress and alleviate symptoms of depression.

• Feel useful

Retirement can leave you feeling unproductive, which is perfectly normal when you’re going through a change. Volunteering with an organization that aligns with your values will give you meaningful work and a sense of purpose.

• Meet new people

Isolation and loneliness are genuine issues for seniors. Volunteering is an excellent way to meet people who share your interests and build new friendships.

Retirement is a unique stage in life, and volunteering is a great way to make the most of it. Contact volunteer or community organizations in your area to find volunteering opportunities.

Walking has many benefits!

The older you get, the more difficult it can be to stay physically active. However, walking is an excellent way to keep fit without exerting too much effort. Here’s a look at some of the benefits of walking.

Strengthens your muscles.

Walking for 30 minutes daily can strengthen your leg and back muscles, improving your balance and reducing the risk of falls. It’s also an excellent way to burn calories and maintain a healthy weight.

Prevents various health problems.

Studies have shown that going on regular walks can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It can also lessen chronic pain and help in stroke recovery.

Boost mood.

Moderate-intensity walking (which causes slight breathlessness) directly affects your psychological health. It can improve your self-esteem and stabilize your mood. Plus, walking with others can help you feel less isolated. All this boosts your spirits! Walking also has beneficial effects on memory and concentration.

In short, walking has numerous physical and psychological benefits. Ready to get started? The more you walk, the more you’ll want to walk.

5 essential estate planning documents you need as a senior

Estate planning is crucial for seniors to safeguard their assets and ensure their wishes are respected. Here are five vital estate planning documents you should have:

• Last will and testament. Your will dictates how your assets and property are distributed after your death. Local laws determine asset distribution without a will, potentially conflicting with what you want.

• Living will (advance health care directive). Your living will outlines your medical treatment preferences if you become incapacitated. It covers decisions on life-sustaining treatments, organ donation and medical interventions, guiding healthcare providers and loved ones.

• Financial power of attorney. This document appoints a trusted individual to manage your financial affairs if you cannot do so. It ensures bills are paid, investments are managed and financial obligations are met in your absence.

• Beneficiary designations. These designate individuals who will receive specific assets, such as retirement accounts or life insurance proceeds, upon your death. Keeping beneficiary designations current ensures your assets pass directly to your chosen beneficiaries, bypassing the probate process.

• Revocable living trust. You transfer ownership of assets to the trust while alive, avoiding probate upon your death. Trust terms specify asset distribution, providing privacy and efficiency in estate settlement.

Seek guidance from legal and financial professionals to help you create a comprehensive estate plan tailored to your needs.
