T
he Sea to Sky corridor is one of British Columbia’s adventure epicentres with majestic mountains, pristine beaches, towering trees and epic, natural beauty. It’s no wonder that the area attracts pet owners looking to explore the great outdoors along with their four-legged friends. The pet-friendly communities of Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton have no shortage of breathtakingly scenic excursions. Whether it’s to hang out one-onone, or make new two and four-legged friends, an extensive list of parks, trails, and beaches to explore means there’s something for everyoner.
Squamish Located about an hour’s drive north of Vancouver and just 45 minutes to Whistler’s south, Squamish B.C. is bordered by rivers that connect to the Pacific Ocean to the west, and granite-rock cliff faces to the east. Its proximity to untamed nature and lots of wildlife has influenced its choice to be an
One of them is located on Bailey Street in downtown Squamish and the other is on Glacier View Drive in the Garibaldi Highlands, which is located about a 15 min. drive northeast of downtown. Squamish is also connected to and surrounded by networks of trails. The Alice Lake Trail Network, located 16 km north of Squamish, is dog friendly in marked areas. Brohm Lake Park, meanwhile, has a stunning trail called the Tantalus Lookout, and is located between Squamish and Whistler. The trails along the Stawamus River dike in Valley Cliff are located just south of Squamish. Nexen Beach, on the Pacific’s Howe Sound in downtown Squamish, is connected to a loop trail. Judd Beach in Brackendale is nine kilometres north of Squamish along the Squamish River and is frequented by locals. The Chief boasts dog-friendly trails with local dog owners recommending you take your pup along the backside of the mountain.

thriving. It has a combination of on and off-leash parks as well as some dog-friendly beaches. Rainbow Park, Meadow Park and Alpha Lake Park are off-leash before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m. and are located north of Whistler Village.

The base of Mt. Currie touches down east of Pemberton, and is now home to a five kilometre base to sub-alpine hiking trail that runs along the mountain’s southwest side.
The aptly named Barking Bay is at the south end of Rainbow Park and boasts a dog-friendly beach on which to relax. Canine Cove at Lost Lake is also a great place for four-legged friends to splash around.
Pemberton Situated about 30 kilometres north of Whistler, Pemberton is also home to a network of trails and is a great destination for animal excursions. It has an off-leash designated area, as well as on-leash trails and parks. One Mile Lake, located just south of Pemberton off Hwy 99, has the one and only designated off-
Bathtub Trail, shared by bikers and hikers, follows the edge of the Lillooet River and can be accessed right from the northeast end of town. It links up to other trails too. Mosquito Hill and Lake area is also shared by bikers and hikers and offers up a variety of trails with different views and difficulties. It’s located about an eight kilometer drive northeast of Pemberton village. W
histler is a go-to destination for fun with friends, whether it’s skiing and mountain biking or partying and dining out.
Still, it can be a little “ruff” leaving behind your furry friends as you dash out the door to a new adventure. Don’t fret though, Whistler offers many opportunities for you and your four-legged pals to go out and some fun together too.
Make a splash If excitement is what you seek with your canine companion, then DockDogs is the event for you. The DockDogs Canadian Western Regionals will be held right here in Whistler from Aug. 28 – 31. Top dogs from around the region will be competing for the western title in four disciplines: Big Air, Extreme Vertical, Speed Retrieve, and Iron Dog. “You can expect a lot of excitement,” says Mike Chiasson, president and CEO of DockDogs Canada. “People who saw it last year will know that it’s just non-stop excitement with the dogs. You’re going to see dogs that jump five feet and you’ll see dogs hat jump over 25 feet! We’re going to have a world record holder dog on hand to put on a show for everybody as well. It’s just great family fun and we will be putting on a non-stop exciting show from early in the morning until the night.”

You and your pup can come enjoy the festivities and even partake every day of the competition. The only requirements: you must be over seven years old and your pooch has to be over six months old. According to Chiasson, your dog is going to be hesitant to jump into the pool the first time, but if you can get them to do it once, “they’ll be hooked, both the owner and the dogs.” There will be lots of activities on hand for all who attend, including a twist on the 50/50 lottery that has the dogs choosing the winner. “We’re going to have 100 tennis balls that are all numbered,” says Chiasson. “At the end of day we will put all the balls in the pool and the dog will go in and pick out the winner. It’s a lot of fun for everyone.”
Festivities to drool over The Whistler Ski and Snowboard Festival (WSSF) is not just for humans; the event also hosts quite a few activities for you and your pets. From Xtreme Airdogs, where you can give dock diving a try with your dog, to ZEN Training, which is obedience and agility training, WSSF is a weekend of fun for you and your four-legged buddy. In 2014, WSSF held DogFest on April 18 – 19 where humans and pets alike got to enjoy all the activities together and even had a chance to witness some professional K9 units demonstrate their work, sniffing out explosives and narcotics. Owners also got to partake in a Walk of Shame Dog Parade where they created humourous, dogshaming signs for their naughty pets and walked around the village.
WAG your tail Whistler Animal Galore (WAG) shelter is host to many events throughout the year to which you can bring your pets. One such event is the annual K9 Wine & Dine fundraiser, where you and your canine pals get to enjoy a night of dinner together. The event, which was held last year on Sept. 14, served canine guests a three-course meal of “yappetizers,” homemade meat loaf finished with a secret blend called Pinot Growlio, then as the grand finale, they were brought a pupcake for dessert. Their human companions also got to take a break and enjoy their own buffet-style meal.

Although the date has not been set for this year’s event, it will be held in September again and organizers say you can expect a bigger and better time at the extravagant black-tie event. “The event is going to be pretty awesome this year,” says Cat Mazza, promotions and communications coordinator. “We have people walk the red carpet with their dogs, and people usually dress up their dogs in ties and pretty dresses. Everybody has a good time whether you bring your dog or not. It’s just a fun night to dress up and get out. We have great music, great food, and it’s just a really fun time for everyone.” WAG also hosts several events and fundraisers throughout the year, including their annual dog wash where you can come out and socialize at the barbecue and have your dog washed at the same time. All the events require a donation with proceeds going back to the WAG animal shelter. WHISTLER PET 2014-2015 9

Q: Can you describe what Whistler Dog Sitting Does?
A: We offer one-on-one in-hotel and home pet sitting, adventure walks for dogs, as well as house and pet sitting services.
Q: What areas does Whistler Dog Sitting serve? A: Anywhere in Whistler — from Emerald to Function Junction.
Q: How long have you been pet sitting for? A: Privately for a long time, more
recently working with Whistler hotels and locals for almost two years as Whistler Dog Sitting.
Q: Why did you decide to open up a pet sitting business?
A: I had been pet/house sitting for a long time
and saw a niche in supplying a service to hotel guests that need someone to take care of their pet while they explore Whistler. I have always loved animals and love the outdoors, so I wanted to incorporate these aspects into my day-to-day life.
Q: What kinds of animals do you pet sit? A: You name it we can take care of it! I haven’t had too many odd requests though and generally we take care of dogs and cats.

Q: What is involved? A: As it’s a one-on-one service we can cater
to whatever an owner needs from us. Every animal is different, so I make sure to get as much information from the owner first and adjust the service we provide to fit. Some dogs are very social and others are not. Some are not suited to the general group walks and sometimes all they need is someone to stay with them and make sure they are comfortable and happy while the owner is out.
Q: Describe something hilarious that
happened at work this week with the animals.
A: I have been house sitting for a local couple
and taking care of their cat while they are away. She is so friendly and loves pets, cuddles and attention all the time! If you stop petting her she will literally pick your hand up with her paw and put it on her head for you to continue patting her. She particularly likes to be cuddled and pet early morning, so sometimes I will be woken up to her picking up my hand for a little scratch behind the ear! Even though she has woken me up, I can’t help but laugh at her every time she makes this move for attention.
Q: What is the most important thing about your job?
A: I think being prepared for anything. Weather, environment and situations can change all the time and to many people these pets are like their children. Being prepared for
emergency situations are essential. Talking to the customer first to gauge exactly what the animal is going to need from our sitters is key as well.
Q: What’s your favourite part of the job? A: Obviously hanging out with all the wonderful animals!
Q: Describe something unexpected about the business. Something you didn’t anticipate before starting.

Q: What’s Nora’s job title? A: Nora is a senior avalanche rescue dog at Whistler Blackcomb
Q: What method was used to train Nora? A: Search training for Nora included — and still
includes — a lot of hide and seek type of exercises. We train for obedience to keep her under control, agility to navigate the harsh environment of the mountains and technique to maximize efficiency.
Q: What was the biggest challenge while training Nora?
A: Nora is a “soft” dog. She is motivated by
affection and praise. Conversely, she is demotivated by even the slightest harsh tone in the voice.
Q: What talents does Nora have? A: Her best talent, of course, is she can find you when you are buried or missing. What else comes close to that?
Q: Does Nora have any weird habits? A: Nora loves heights. Obviously this is a good
thing when we are in or suspended below a flying helicopter. But she is always the first one to the edge of a cliff or any place she can get a great view.
Q: What’s the most rewarding part of Nora’s job? A: So many aspects are hugely rewarding. When Nora or any of the other dogs are working a site, fewer searchers (people) need to be exposed to the risk. Clearly, keeping our friends and co-workers out of harms way is very valuable. Knowing my partner, Nora, has the ability to affect the lives of people in need is truly unique. And continuing to validate the complete trust I have in her abilities is continually gratifying.
Q: How would you describe Nora’s personality? A: Sweetheart. Q: What’s the biggest job Nora has ever done? Q: What are Nora’s hobbies? A: Something she did allowed her to do some great work later in her career. Several years ago A: She loves to roll in the snow, play football and she dug herself out of a very large avalanche search for people.
