Reaching new heights The Sea to Sky Gondola offers a stunning backdrop for a wedding

health. It was somewhere between seeing him sneak into her room and sleep in a chair at her bedside and watching him research every drug she

6 WISHES 2016

was given that she knew he was the one. “In many ways it was the worst week of my life,” said Leigh. “Brock was so caring, supportive and thoughtful. He made that awful experience bearable.” And when Brock proposed a few years later on a hike out to the Eagle Bluffs with a ring made from meteorites, Leigh had no hesitation. In fact, although the engagement was a surprise, plans to get married were already underway.

As a photographer, Leigh was drawn to the vast landscapes of Iceland and initially wanted to get married there. But once the Vancouver couple visited the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish they knew they’d found their perfect venue. “We love hiking, and nature, and getting to exchange vows in such a beautiful setting was exactly what we had been envisioning,” said Leigh. The pair wanted an intimate wedding that reflected their personalities so

they decided to have brass dappled throughout the tables. “We seem to be drawn to a mix of vintage and modern and also a kind of quirky aesthetic in general,” said Leigh. “This naturally spilled over into our wedding planning and décor.” They began collecting the brass in December and relished in thrifting for all the unique pieces, including the brass bells that rang the couple in on

their wedding day. Leigh’s photographer eye for details emerged in the elegant and vintage décor woven throughout, from the funky vintage dog and cat illustrations that became the name cards to the amber glass bottle of sunscreen. Leigh’s artistic brother painted custom artwork for their programs, and Leigh’s best friend owns Living Lotus, a plantbased dessert company, which supplied the wedding cake.

And although the celebration was elegant it also showcased the couple’s sense of adventure and individuality. A pair of Vancouver designed Fluevog boots accented Leigh’s romantic satin dress, and underneath Brock’s fine suit were brightly coloured socks. On the day of their wedding, the September sun shone brilliantly, warming the rocks and air that would set the stage for the afternoon vow exchange. Leigh and Brock had their first glimpse of one another against the majestic Shannon Falls, which helped

8 WISHES 2016

to quell nerves over the upcoming ceremony. From there they walked over to the gondola and then crossed the suspension bridge to the tinkling of their brass bells. Against the stunning backdrop of Howe Sound and jutting peaks, surrounded by 38 friends and family, Leigh and Brock were united. The evening took off from there, with a buffet dinner on the expansive observation deck of the Sea to Sky Gondola, overlooking picturesque views of Howe Sound. Leigh’s father wrote a song for the pair and performed it with his guitar — one of Leigh’s most touching moments. Speeches and dancing followed, but not before Leigh and Brock escaped just as the sun was about to set. Their foreheads touched and although the sun was setting, they knew the light between them would not.

postcard Canadian winter wedding. The world travellers had been living in New Zealand after spending time in places such as Montreal and

10 WISHES 2016

London, England, but none held the allure of Whistler as a winter wedding destination. “Annika grew up in Vancouver and spent a lot of time in Whistler when she was young. She remembers Whistler as this sleepy little town where she’d spend family holidays. Whistler is now a big stop on the international destination map, but in many ways it retains a lot of that small town feel,” Patrick said. The couple visited Brew Creek in

the summer and knew right away they found a peaceful, intimate spot a little off the beaten path. Annika said they didn’t have to work hard to imagine how beautiful it would be in the winter. When Annika and Patrick arrived in early January for their wedding weekend, they weren’t disappointed. A foot of snow fell the night before the ceremony and the couple greeted guests in the main cabin, heated by a small wood fireplace.

“Is there anything more Canadian than that? Coming out of the cold into a warm beautiful setting filled with good friends,” Patrick marveled. Having a winter wedding was certainly a foreign concept for many of the Kiwis in attendance. One friend, whose flight and subsequently luggage was delayed, arrived just in time for the ceremony, dressed as a 1900s lumberjack. With a grin, he claimed it was the best he could find in Whistler. “Everyone warned us that the day would fly by and we had to just be in the moment and enjoy it. We have so many memories from the day,” Patrick said. One moment that stood out for the couple was standing on the shores of Alta Lake while photographer Pascale Gadbois worked her magic behind the camera. It was so cold that Annika had to be wrapped in layers to get feeling back into her arms between photos, but the results were breathtaking. “We’re so thrilled with our photos so the temporary pain was worth it,” Patrick said. “The guys and girls at Brew Creek were also so amazing. Their food was delicious and they were so attentive. It genuinely felt like they wanted us to feel like a million bucks on our big day.” The couple chose to do their photos before the ceremony so they could chat with friends and family after the ceremony. Brew Creek Centre really

provided the perfect setting and Patrick said only a few flowers were needed to accentuate an already ideal location. “Our wedding was full of little details that we cherish. I guess it is a testament to the people we had helping us that made it so easy. We could enjoy the day with our loved ones while Brew Creek staff worked away to make our day so special,” Patrick said. Now almost a year later, Patrick and Annika are back in New Zealand with fond memories of their magical Canadian wedding in Whistler. “Our wedding in Whistler suited us perfectly,” Patrick said.

memory of mom,” she said. As the owner of Squamish’s Wild and Heart, White lives fashion. Planning her own wedding last June allowed her to expand on her creativity. With a Bohemian vibe in mind, she eagerly started hunting for her wedding dress. For her headpieces — yes, she had three — White admits with some girlish guilt — she had something specific in mind. They were more than fashion statements, they were tributes to her

late mother, whom White lost suddenly eight years ago. White wore a veil, as her mother had done, for the ceremony. The veil was swapped for a side clip of wildflowers for the dinner, followed by a crown of daisies for the night of dancing ahead. Ever one of them reflected an aspect of White’s mother. “My parents had a lot of daisies at their wedding,” she said. White has seen an uptake in sales

of the delicately made paper, flower crowns to brides at her store. Just up Cleveland Avenue, staff at Billies Flower House have also been busy piecing together fresh crowns. Between last January and September, the flower boutique delivered approximately 12 flower crowns to brides at the 62 Sea to Sky corridor weddings they served, the company’s owner Alanna Wilson said. Pinterest has changed the wedding landscape, Wilson noted. Having made flower arrangements for weddings for

the last 15 years, the idea cataloging app has led to rapidly changing wedding trends. “It used to be that trends would hang around for five years or so. You could point to something and say ‘that is ‘80s,’” Wilson said. “Now they are changing every summer. It is really quite fun. I like it.” Woodsy, delicate crowns, made from twigs and small flowers were popular last summer. Looking ahead, Wilson predicts that flower crowns made from

greens will be all the rage. Whistler-based wedding photographer Pascale Gadbois has noticed a shift away from more traditional veils to clips and flowers. Whatever brides decide upon, they must make it their own, the owner of Gadbois Photography said. “The main idea I try to put forward is it has got to reflect your personality and it is not just something that you saw on Pinterest,” she said As with White’s story, Gadbois has seen brides personalize their hairpieces so that they become a meaningful memory or keepsake. One of her customers added a small, blue feathered fishing fly to her hairclip to represent her late father, who was an avid fisherman. Looking over her wedding photos, Sarah smiles as the sentiment of her daisy crown shines through. In the end, it was also her husband Jake’s favourite hairpiece of the night. “Daisies have always made me think of my mother,” White said. “I definitely felt her presence that night.”

16 WISHES 2016

“As CEO of the SLCC, it was really important for us to show support for our team so we chose to get married at the cultural centre,” Brady said. The ceremony took place outside on the facility’s 7,000 sq. ft. deck, which floats into the forest, allowing guests a view of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. Hydrangeas and white touches created an elegant modern decor for the intimate ceremony. “Our ceremony incorporated

everything we love as a couple from the mountain backdrop to the First Nations culture,” Brady said. “I told myself I wouldn’t blubber like a child and of course I did the moment I saw Allie coming down the aisle.” The black tie event incorporated many pieces of First Nations culture including the post-ceremony champagne toast. Every glass of champagne was poured on top of a Xusum berry, a traditional First Nations

berry used to celebrate and mark milestones. After a few moments of mingling, the wedding party boarded a party bus along with photographer Alaina Michelle of Hera Films. As long-time Whistler locals, the couple took photos at meaningful locations important to their relationship. “We went to Starbucks because it was a place where we both realized there was a spark between us,

White hydrangeas and silver sequined table clothes created a black tie atmosphere. Guests mingled among the stand-up food stations featuring an array of stunning First Nations-inspired food. “Our favourite way to celebrate is to eat and drink and we wanted our wedding to have a very formal cocktail reception feel,” Alexandra said. “We wanted an elegant party where people could talk and mingle without being stuck in one spot the whole time.” The canapés and hors d’oeuvres featured a gorgeous array of Seawise seafood, including authentic salmon

“It was a wonderful day,” Diana recalled. “When Paul and I decided to do a destination (elopement) wedding I thought, ‘what could be more perfect?’” The Moinots are just one of many couples who have opted for an elopement in the Sea to Sky corridor in recent years. With the spectacular scenery and endless choice of stunning locations in both summer and winter, the popularity of elopements is here to stay. Be it crossing the Peak2Peak Gondola,

helicopter accessed on a remote mountain peak, or next to a crystal-clear lake, the options are endless. The Moinots — from Houston, Texas, are delighted with their choice. “The pictures are just breathtaking,” Diana said. “It was just what we wanted — absolutely amazing.” Linda Marshall of Whistler Wedding Planners refers to such elopements as “adventure weddings” that often involve an activity. “They’re planned

elopements, but it’s really about finding a really great adventure,” she said. On average, she plans 12 to 18 elopements a year, both summer and winter. “They’re about a really great location and a smaller number of people,” she said, adding that some people bring a small wedding party. “People commonly want a less hectic and more private celebration held here, then have a reception and show the photographs back home.” Photographer Karen Tallevi said

she has been getting more elopement enquiries in recent years. Elopements are popular for a couple of main reasons, she says: less stress and a reduction in cost. Diana said it just felt right. “We wanted it to be just about the two of us. When we started looking at planning the wedding, we thought, ‘that sounds stressful.’ A regular wedding can take it away from being about the couple — we wanted it about the things that mattered to us.”

Tallevi photographed the Moinots’ wedding, which is for her one of the most memorable elopements. The ideal weather and remote mountain top location made the day — as well as a hiker stumbling on them out of the blue. “We all broke up into laughter — we couldn’t believe it,” Tallevi laughed. “He looked a little lost and asked the helicopter pilot the best way to get down.” Whistler wedding officiant Jeremy Postal does around 20 elopement weddings per year — with one wedding in particular standing out — a Star Wars themed heli-accessed wedding on top of Rainbow Mountain. “The bride decided to surprise the groom and had me dress up as a storm trooper,” Postal recalled. “I came out of the helicopter and the guy was just blown away.” Other memorable elopements include a mountain-biking ceremony at the entrance to the Top of the World biking trail and in a rowboat on a lake. “People really do like to get creative,” he said.

simple reverence. The couple’s mothers completed a Celtic hand blessing, setting the tone for their intimate ceremony. “There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and it was warm, but not sweltering. We lucked out with the best weather possible,” Collin said. “We were really happy to have such a unique venue for the wedding.”

The park is tucked beside the covered bridge between the Upper and Lower Village and bordered by Fitzsimmons Creek, the perfect spot to kick off Ashley and Collin’s Whistler celebration. While the couple slipped away for photos with Jennifer Findlay of Findlay Photography, the guests were shuttled to one of Whistler’s most epic

reception venues, the Whistler Sliding Centre. The 2010 Olympic Winter venue is now one of Whistler’s most exciting wedding spots in the beautiful Fitzsimmons Valley on the southeast slope of Blackcomb Mountain, just minutes from Whistler Village. The

venue offers spectacular views of Whistler Village and the surrounding mountains. “When we viewed the sliding centre venue we agreed with the sales pitch, it is the best patio in Whistler,” Collin said. “We instantly had the same vision of a giant awesome party on the side

of a mountain.” Before making their grand entrance at the sliding centre, Ashley and Collin did something very unique. They took a chairlift up Whistler Mountain followed by their photographer. “We had a ‘just married’ sign on the back of our chair and spent an hour in the alpine taking pictures. It was a really nice break to be together one on one,” Ashley said. “On the way back down the mountain all of the tourists were cheering us on.” As 140 guests wrapped up the cocktail reception, Collin and Ashley arrived ready to celebrate. Guests sat themselves according to their ski runthemed seating chart and soaked in the venue’s panoramic views. Lived edged slabs of wood served food, and as bar tables, while wildflowers completed the decor, giving the reception a true alpine feel. Whistler Cooks served up West Coast-

style food, including locally sourced salmon and Pemberton potatoes. “We took group photos with every table before they lined up for food, which was a lot of fun,” Ashley said. With the alpine glow setting the surrounding mountains ablaze, Whistler’s DJ Rosco kicked off the dance. Collin said some guests never left the dance floor thanks to the quality of the DJ’s set. “DJ Rosco brought his whole set up from the bar and everyone had an awesome experience. It was the number one comment over and over. We danced the whole time,” Collin said. High above Whistler Village, the celebration continued until the wee hours of the morning, sending the beats high into the alpine. For Collin and Ashley, their wedding was the perfect celebration of their love and Whistler, a place special to their hearts.

Embracing colour in Pemberton Kate and Callum’s backyard wedding embraces local offerings

P

emberton’s Mount Currie created a stunning backdrop for Kate and Callum Macleod’s wedding set in their own backyard, a five-acre property in Pemberton Meadows. BY: KIM VANLOCHEM

From the moment she said “yes,” Kate knew she wanted two things: a party in her own backyard and an explosion of colour. In early

28 WISHES 2016

September, huge white tents were set up and Kate’s backyard was transformed into a beautiful wedding venue. “We wanted our wedding to express our unique personalities. Everything had colour, from the bridesmaid dresses to the lanterns hanging inside the tents,” Kate said. “I wanted something different.” Guests were shuttled from Pemberton and beyond, and ushered

into Kate and Callum’s whimsical wedding world. From the bridesmaid’s dresses to the table settings and flowers, bright hues created a celebratory atmosphere among 180 family and friends. Groomsmen wore khaki shorts and bow ties from every colour of the rainbow and the excitement was palpable. Grandma brought the couple’s two young boys down the aisle to front row seats at their mom and dad’s wedding.

Kate walked out of their family home in a stunning Great Gatsby-style vintage dress with her dad by her side. “It was really special because I walked out the front door of my own house with my dad. Mount Currie was directly in front of us and the vibe was perfect,” Kate said. Paralleling their creative style, Kate and Callum’s first kiss was celebrated

with the Beatle’s “All You Need is Love” blasting on the loud speakers while the champagne flowed. The Whistler Wedding Collective’s Ashley Barker captured Kate and Callum’s love and its colourful expression. Launched in 2015, the collective is a group of local creatives who help capture their clients’ big day with photography and videography.

For Kate and Callum, the Whistler Wedding Collective was the perfect fit. The celebration continued with a large family style meal for 180 guests, catered by Collective Kitchen complete with everything from roast pig to local albacore tuna, lemongrass marinated chicken tenders and seasonal, organic vegetables. As the sun set behind Mount Currie, twinkle lights illuminated the couple’s first dance. Local band Blame the Weekend kept the dance floor busy until Pemberton’s DJ Pete followed until the wee hours of the morning. It was a magical time for Kate and Callum and, they say, the best party they’ve ever been to. In fact, Kate says she’d love to host more weddings on their beautiful property dubbed Shady Acres and share the magic of their little piece of paradise again and again.

telling you they’re staying for a few nights, some longer. The question on everyone’s mind is what is the plan for the night before the wedding? A rehearsal dinner, or a welcome dinner as they’re more commonly

32 WISHES 2016

called, is a great way to bring everyone together and kickstart your destination wedding celebration. Typically from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., these dinners serve as a way to bring your guests together and give them something to do once they’ve checked in to their hotels. It also gives you the opportunity to frontload socializing before your big day. “Your wedding day is such a big rush,” said Linda Marshall of Whistler Wedding Planners. “A rehearsal dinner is a welcome and gathering of all the

family and friends before it gets busy.” With over a thousand weddings under her belt, she’s seen the evolution of the rehearsal dinner over the years. No longer is it a dinner exclusively for the wedding party; instead — and especially since Whistler is a destination wedding spot — welcome dinners include all the guests because they’re a great way for the couple to spend some quality time with their guests in a less formal manner. A popular spot in Whistler is Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub. With their 60-seat

trend is hosting an activity reception, where all the guests participate in an activity together, like golfing at The Meadows at Pemberton, or Ziptrekking in Whistler, and then either having a barbecue at the venue, or on a nearby lake. “Part of having your wedding in Whistler is showing off what you love about Whistler,” said Marshall. “Many couples have spent time here and want to add their family and friends to their bank of memories.” A nice way to enjoy the beauty Whistler has to offer is to grab a handful of blankets and head to one of Whistler’s picturesque parks for a picnic. Sure you can make your own spread, but you can also take the stress out of meal prep with a to-go meal from caterers like Whistler Cooks Catering, a platter from Samurai Sushi or even take away tacos from La Cantina. Regardless of how you choose to welcome your guests, remember that they have come to celebrate with you, and will be thrilled with whatever prewedding experience you provide.

Arthur’s Room, The Dubh Linn Gate is an ideal location for a casual and fun welcome dinner. There is live music every night of the week, and more often than not, guests stay and dance the night away long after the bride and groom have retired for the evening. They also offer a group menu that includes everything from sliders, crispy fish, roast pork and chicken curry. Another option in Whistler is the Bearfoot Bistro. Underground in their 20,000-bottle wine cellar a private fine dining experience awaits, complete with pressed linens, twinkling lights and satin seats. Executive Chef Melissa Craig selects food inspired by the season and folds it into a creative culinary sensation that perfectly complements the chosen wine from the room. Think oysters, Cornish game hen, or lobster. Guests can continue celebrating in the Ketel One Ice Room and sample some of the finest vodkas of the world while wrapped in Canada Goose parkas.
