A Warm Welcome
Our front cover this month shows the names of those of Whitby who lost their lives fighting for the country in the two World Wars and in Afghanistan. On Remembrance Sunday 10 November, services of remembrance will be held at the Cenotaph on Whitehall, London, and in cities, towns and villages throughout the country. Here in Whitby, a remembrance service will be held at the War Memorial at Dock End at 10:30am, and an ecumenical service at St Mary’s Church from 2.30pm. The services will remember the contribution of military and civilian servicemen and women involved in the two world wars and later conflicts. Remembrance Day, also referred to as Poppy Day or Armistice Day is observed on Monday 11 November, and is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended World War I hostilities between Allied nations and Germany in 1918. At 11:00am, a two-minute silence is observed across the nation, reflecting on the profound cost of conflict and the lives lost.
Many people wear a red poppy in the lead-up to Remembrance Day
and Remembrance Sunday which has become the enduring symbol of remembrance. Proceeds from the sale of poppies go to support veterans and their families through the Royal British Legion. Remembrance commemorations are important to communities like Whitby, as they serve not only to honour those who have died in military service, but also to foster a sense of unity. Schools, local organisations and families come together in various activities, which tell about the significance of communal remembrance to gatherings, fostering a sense of support and promoting awareness and understanding of the impacts of war on a nation and ensuring that the legacies of those who served are preserved and honoured for future generations. Remembrance also honours those who continue to serve and to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life. However you chose to remember, make ‘Remembrance’ your own this November.

Dancing, alpacas & an inspection at The Mayfield
As we move into Autumn with colder weather and darker days, we are not letting anything dampen our spirits at The Mayfield. We had lots of fun this month with many visitors, impromptu dancing sessions, and trips out. Here are some of the highlights.
We had another wonderful visit from the alpacas Sunny & Sandstorm, the bunnies Snowball & Pom Pom, and Brillo the guinea pig from Butterwick Alpaca Retreat.
Seeing the joy on our residents faces as they stroked, fed and looked at the animals was truly heartwarming.
Several musicians and singers joined us, including Claire Louise. Her voice and stunning songs make us want to get up and dance immediately, so that’s what we did! Our new resident Sid was a key instigator of the dancing at this event, and numerous times since. It’s great fun having him with us!
We had a lovely trip out to Runswick Bay. The sunlight and clouds over the bay were beautiful and we enjoyed a
beautiful walk. This was followed by a well-deserved lunch at The Ellerby which was absolutely delicious.
On a slightly different note, we had a mock Care Quality Commission (the sector’s regulator) inspection carried out by an independent third party to check the general running of the home, including compliance with the regulations. It was a very in-depth inspection and the findings were extremely positive - “The team presented as hard working, competent and possessing reassuring levels of initiative. Feedback from residents was highly complimentary about the care they received. There was a pleasant atmosphere of kindness and dedication within the home all day. Staff spoke highly of working at the home and reported being well supported.”
Well done to our brilliant team for your amazing dedication and work you do every day. Thank you.
If you or a loved one are considering joining our caring community, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please give us a call on 01947 280 884

Monthly Recipe
Jammy Oatbake
This simple, versatile recipe has been kindly sent in by Jo Wedgwood of Fylingthorpe. We think it's a great opportunity to bake something sweet and autumnal!
Timings & Servings
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 35-40 minutes
Ingredients
300g baking margarine (dairy or non-dairy)
300g self raising flour
250g rolled oats
10 tablespoons sugar (granulated or caster)
Jar of tangy jam/marmalade/curd/Christmas mincemeat. (Plum jam, blackberry jam, raspberry jam, gooseberry jam, blackcurrant jelly, orange marmalade and lemon curd - all work well).
Method
Grease and line a baking tray approx. 25cm x 35cm. Preheat oven to Gas Mark 5, 170 degrees fan.
In a large bowl, rub in the baking margarine along with the flour, oats and sugar.
Press ¾ of the mixture into your lined tray. Use a bit of cling film or baking paper to stop the mixture sticking and tearing up as you press it to form a base layer.
Dollop the jam (or whatever you are using) all over the base, then gently spread out evenly using the back of a spoon. Sprinkle the remaining ¼ of the crumble mix over the top of the jam but do not press in.
Bake for approximately 35 to 40 minutes until you see it turning a light golden brown colour.
Whilst still warm, slice into squares but leave in the tin to cool.
Once fully cool, you might need to re-cut your squares before removing from the tin.
The Oatbake freezes well, or you can keep it in an airtight container for a few days.
Whitby Advertiser's recipes are a resounding success!
Yesterday I baked the Blackberry and almond crumble cake as featured in the September issue. It was a resounding success! I am now encouraged to try future recipes so thank you very much.

A Spot of Bother
By Mark Haddon.
A Spot of Bother is a darkly humorous and poignant exploration of a family unravelling under the weight of its own dysfunctions.
The central character, George Hall, is a retired man in his late fifties who becomes obsessively convinced that a lesion on his hip is cancerous, leading to a gradual mental breakdown. While this sounds a depressing premise for a story, Haddon’s deft handling of the anxieties of middle age and the fragile nature of mental health, ensures that the reader is able to smile, wince, cheer along and empathise with everyone involved.
The narrative weaves together the perspectives of George’s immediate family, each dealing with their own crisis, as is often the way of families. His wife, Jean, is having an affair, while their daughter, Katie, is preparing for a second marriage to a man that no one in the family likes. Their son, Jamie, is

breaking research which hopefully will lead one day to a cure for blood cancer sufferers like June’s son, Peter, who has been battling with myeloma for the last six years. To date, June and her family have raised over £50,000 for the research, much of this from the sales of June's first book
The Adventures of Pandora Pettigrew Puss Wuss and Just a Village Kid and Other Ramblings, an autobiographical account of June growing up in the 1950s, which also includes her poetry and creative writing.

struggling both with his identity and his own relationships. Each of them is so wrapped up in their own little world that they fail to notice that George, who is like an extra in the film of their own lives, is falling apart in front of them. The blend of dry wit and deep empathy, keeps all the relationships authentic and relatable and there are moments when the reader, no matter which generation they belong to will recognise themselves and their own family relationships. Haddon’s prose is sharp, and his ability to balance humour with moments of genuine emotional depth is impressive. A Spot of Bother is a compelling read, offering both laugh-outloud and moments of introspection.

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in.
The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Garden View
By Rachel Leverton
November marks the start of winter, and many gardens become bare and lifeless as plants retreat for the season. However, there are plenty of ways to keep our outdoor spaces interesting, even during the gloomy months.
Add garden lighting for a warm glow. One of the simplest ways to bring life to a winter garden is through outdoor lighting. As daylight hours shorten, strategically placed lights can transform a garden into a magical evening retreat. Fairy lights are perfect for draping over trees, shrubs, or fences, creating a gentle sparkle. For a more dramatic effect, solar-powered lanterns or spotlights can highlight key features, such as evergreen trees or sculptures, casting interesting shadows and adding depth.
Pathway lighting is also a practical and aesthetic addition. Choose LED or solar options for energy efficiency and consider warm-toned bulbs to create a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Make sure electric lights are rated for outdoor use and are on a timer so that the wildlife isn’t disturbed.
Introduce outdoor heating for comfort. Consider adding a patio heater, fire pits, or chiminea to provide a focal point for gathering, encouraging you to enjoy your garden even on colder nights. A fire pit offers the bonus being able to toast marshmallows and watch the flames dance, while chimineas bring a rustic charm and warmth to smaller spaces. Electric patio heaters are easy to operate and can be strategically placed near seating areas for comfort.
Create colour with winter-flowering plants. There are plenty of species that thrive in colder weather and can inject colour into your garden. Hellebores, also known as the Christmas rose, bloom in shades of white, pink, and purple from November through to spring. Winter pansies, cyclamen, and primroses are also great options for adding cheerful colour to borders and pots. Evergreen shrubs such as holly and euonymus keep their vibrant green hues year-round, while the bright berries of pyracantha or cotoneaster can provide food for wildlife and visual interest.
Incorporate topiary. A piece of topiary will add interest to a pot and provide structure in winter. Formal shapes such as balls, pyramids and cubes work well. Box and yew are traditional choices. You can buy reasonably priced ready-trimmed topiary, but if you don’t fancy the maintenance try planting a small conifer paired with ornamental grasses like miscanthus or carex, to add texture and movement to the garden.
Add interest with seasonal garden accessories.
Frost-proof pots filled with winter flowers, garden ornaments, bird feeders (remember birds need high-energy, high-fat foods during cold weather), and outdoor sculptures can all serve as focal points. Mirrors can be used to reflect light and elevate the atmosphere and help it feel dynamic, even when the plants are resting.
By using one or more of these tips, your garden can remain a space to enjoy, whatever the weather.
