Sheridan Draz’s future holds a lot of unknowns at this point, but his mother, Katie Draz Campbell, wants to show her son that the community will be by his side through it all.

Draz, 22, is a Minnesota Army National Guard veteran. His mother has been busy planning a benefit in his honor.

“I’m doing this to honor my son, his service and the sacrifices he’s about to make with his human body. That he is loved and not forgotten,” she explained. “Although I do want to raise funds for whatever the future brings, I want to show him that the community is there, they do care, they do appreciate him and they are going to show up.”

Draz is a 2018 graduate of Mahtomedi High School. When he was a junior in high school, he enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard. From October 2019 to October 2020, he served a tour in the Gulf War against terrorism in the Middle East. He served

under the 34th ECAB Red Devils in Operation Inherent Resolve and Operation Spartan Shield.

In May 2021, a freak leg break resulted in the diagnosis of high-grade metastatic osteosarcoma (bone cancer) that had already spread. The first treatment and surgical intervention were not successful, as the cancer has continued to spread to his lungs, lymphatic system and other bones.

Fast-forward to May 2022, and Draz still has a long road ahead. He has been in and out of the hospital, undergone several rounds of chemotherapy and has had multiple surgeries.

Draz Campbell hopes the community will show up in droves to show their support for the young veteran May 7.

“He is one of the most humble, kind, generous souls I know. I’m not just saying that because I’m his mother. He truly is. That is the definition of Sheridan,” she said.

SHERIDAN’S ARMY: Family hopeful community shows up for hometown hero FROM PAGE 1

Two things that Draz is passionate about are dogs and cars, which is why both a car show and K-9s will be a big part of the benefit. Draz Campbell has received permission from all of the businesses that surround the Legion to use their parking lots May 7 for what will be, hopefully, a large car show. In addition to some police and military K-9s who plan to attend, the event will be dog-friendly.

In his free time, Draz enjoys everything automotive: car shows, stereos, exhausts, engine modifications — you name it. He has a passion for foreign cars and German engineering, and specifically enjoys Audis and Volkswagens. Draz also enjoys

spending time with his two German shepherds, Ruby and Beau.

“Having the community show up to support him means everything to me and my family,” Draz Campbell said.

Last week, Draz was transported by ambulance to the intensive care unit at a local hospital. According to an update from his mother, he went neutropenic, spiked a fever, and needed blood products due to chemo side effects. He also went into septic shock due to a bacterial infection in his blood. Many of his organs are in active failure.

Draz is scheduled for two more rounds of chemo. He will need to have surgery on one of his lungs, recover, and then go through the same procedure on the other lung.

Sheridan Draz enjoys everything automotive. He has a passion for foreign cars and German engineering, and especially enjoys Audis and Volkswagens.

He will also need to undergo a surgery to amputate part of his right leg; however, the decision has not yet been made on exactly what that will entail.

“We are all praying and hoping that this amputation and all of these dramatic surgical interventions are going to be his key,” Draz Campbell said.

Mental health calls increase significantly in Hugo

HUGO — Perhaps the most shocking statistic revealed by Sheriff Dan Starry’s is that mental health calls more than doubled (increased by 136%) in Hugo and increased by 40% in the Washington County service area.

Each year Sheriff Starry, along with several Hugo deputies, visits the Hugo City Council to recap what the Sheriff’s Office saw the previous year in terms of calls, trends, priorities and more.

The city of Hugo contracts with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) to provide police services. Currently, there are six full-time deputies, one full-time detective and one full-time sergeant from WCSO assigned to Hugo. The city’s $1.24 million contract breaks down to a cost per capita of approximately $80.

Starry said one of WCSO’s main initiatives for 2021 was officer recruitment and retention. Going into 2022, things are looking up.

“Over the past few years, law enforcement has really gotten a bad rap and with that, enrollment in schools and colleges has really plummeted. Those that could retire have retired. A lot of people just wanted to get out of the career in general,” Starry explained.

The WCSO saw that across the board in all divisions, but the hardest hit was in dispatch. Starry said that dispatch experienced a 44% turnover last year. Thanks to recruitment, negotiation of new contracts and implementation of new programming, Starry explained that the dispatch department is pretty much back to full strength.

Starry then provided some statistics for 2021. Here are the highlights: • The WCSO responded to 172 person-in-crisis calls in the city of Hugo and 471 countywide, which represents a 136% increase in Hugo from 2020 and a 40% increase in the county. “We have seen this across the nation, this isn’t just Hugo,” Starry said.

• There were seven overdoses in Hugo, three of which were fatalities, and 52 overdoses in the county. The number of overdoses in Hugo remained flat compared to 2020, but the county documented a 33% increase in overdoses.

• Deputies completed 1,942 traffic stops in Hugo, down from 2,250 in 2020.

• There were 22 arrests for DWIs within Hugo compared to 19 in 2020.

• The WCSO received 8,351 calls for service from Hugo, down slightly from 8,421 in 2020. Of those calls for service, the WCSO responded to 5,144 incidents in Hugo, compared to 5,373 in 2020.

• The WCSO receives calls 24/7, but Starry said the majority of calls come in between 3 and 6 p.m. when residents are coming home from work, schools are letting out, etc. Between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., calls average about 400 calls an hour countywide.

• There were 29 thefts from motor vehicles in the city of Hugo and 188 in Washington County.

That number remained flat from 2020 for Hugo; countywide, the number actually decreased by 22%.

• There were 16 motor vehicle thefts in Hugo, a 23% increase from 2020, and 108 countywide, a 30% increase.

• There were 20 residential burglaries in Hugo, one more burglary than reported in 2020.

With the recent rash of car break-ins/thefts at local day care facilities, Mayor Tom Weidt took the opportunity to remind residents to call 911 rather than turning to social media.

“If you are out there in the community and you see something going on that is not right, call 911 and let them know. Don’t go on social media and post about it, don’t speculate what happened 12 hours ago; get on the phone and let them know what is going on so we can do something about it,” Weidt said.

“There are always people out there that are looking for ways to take advantage of others … (B)e aware that there are always people out there looking to take advantage of you, whether it is leaving something on the front seat of your car, or leaving the car running while you throw some gas in it.”

Starry said Weidt was spot on, and wanted to let residents know that it is okay to call 911, even if it is not an emergency, rather than the 10-digit nonemergency number.

“I know for people my age and older, we have always been told, ‘Don’t call 911 unless it is an emergency.’ We want you to call 911,” Starry explained. “It is the same dispatch crew at the dispatch office answering your 911 call that is going to be answering your non-emergency call … That first phone call is so important for us to be there right away.”

No Pay May

uring the month of May we celebrate many special days and holidays. There is May Day, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day. May is home to Mental Health Awareness Month and National Teacher Appreciation Week. Lesserknown celebrations such as Be Kind to Animals Day, National Pick Strawberry Day, Bike to Work Day, National Armed Forces Day, Bob Dylan’s birthday, National Tap Dance Day, and Paper Airplane Day will all be celebrated in the coming weeks.

Many years ago, our friends created “No Pay May” as a way to get their household budget in line for the year. They were starting out in their professions, recently married, living in Chicago and trying to save for a down payment on a house. No Pay May is a challenge to save money by not spending during the month of May other than for expenses that are absolutely necessary, such as rent/ mortgage, utilities, and gas to get to work. You can’t go out to lunch or dinner for an entire month, and you Publisher’s can’t even buy groceries – you eat all of the food already in your freezer View and pantry. No trips, concerts, going to movies, or other entertainment.

They were disciplined and this technique worked for them. It also cleaned out the pantry and fridge.

Amy and I tried No Pay May a couple times over the years without much success. We would stock up at the grocery store April 30 and always seemed to break down and dine out or buy something by the third week. It’s also difficult to do with kids at home. I propose every year that we drop cable TV, but it’s a battle I haven’t won.

The closest we got to a successful No Pay May was during the Covid lockdown in 2020. We didn’t go anywhere. Since groceries were a challenge to get, we cleaned out our stash of extra food and then only bought what we needed. We ate a lot of noodles and canned vegetables. A tank of gas lasted for weeks.

There wasn’t much about that time I would want to repeat, but we did see a bump in our savings account. We also came to appreciate activities that didn’t cost anything – such as taking walks, playing family games, and visiting with friends over Zoom.

And, I admit we watched a whole bunch of movies on cable.

With the rising costs of groceries, gas, utilities and other necessities, there are ways to save that aren’t as drastic as No Pay May. Shorten showers, turn down hot water heaters, turn off lights, and turn the temperature down in your house.

Unsubscribe from apps and services on your phone that have a monthly fee. Driving the speed limit can save on gas, as well as carpooling. Plan meals ahead of time to save on groceries and eat leftovers. Reuse water bottles. If you like to eat out, prioritize going to your favorite restaurants but skip the unplanned food runs in between. Set a family budget and try to be conscientious of spending. We should also be seeing warmer days ahead, so get out and enjoy the free outdoors.

Mother’s Day As we approach Mother’s Day this Sunday, May 8, take time to honor and recognize your mom, grandmother, or other special woman in your life.

A gift is always nice, or consider something special that doesn’t cost anything, such as a handwritten note or taking on a few extras like emptying the dishwasher, doing laundry, or vacuuming. Dads and kids can cook a meal for the family, or make dinner reservations. This Mother’s Day, do something to help reduce stress and recognize your mom.

Heart strings Every once in a while, as a journalist, you get a story that is really difficult to write. In this week’s paper, you will see that story about Sheridan Draz a 22-year-old veteran of the Minnesota Army National Guard who is battling for his life. In May 2021, he was diagnosed with high-grade metastatic osteosarcoma (bone cancer).

In talking to his mother, I learned that Sheridan and I have a couple of things in common. We both love cars (Volkswagens) and dogs (German shepherds).

I plan to attend Sheridan’s benefit May 7 in Hugo, and I hope you and your family will consider attending too.

Learning about all Sheridan has had to go through in the past year is absolutely heart breaking. I cannot even begin to fathom the amount of pain he has had to deal with. But one thing that he does have going for him is his bravery.

CITY BRIEF Centerville conducts public hearing for ‘Project Banjo’ CENTERVILLE — “Project Banjo” may just be in front of the City Council sometime soon. The Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing at earlier this week (May 3). A large online retailer is proposing a fulfillment center known as “Project Banjo” in the city’s industrial district.

Applicants RJ Ryan Companies and current owner R&R Leasing Inc. have submitted applications for a preliminary plat and a conditional use permit (CUP) for a planned unit development (PUD) to accommodate the construction of an approximately 141,360-squarefoot-warehouse (distribution/ fulfillment center) on 40.7 acres. CUPs will also be considered for use as a truck terminal, building heights and outdoor storage of trucks, and semitrailers exceeding the number of docks and/or bay doors.

The facility is estimated to employ around 600 people, including warehouse workers, delivery van drivers, management and support staff.

County board amends American Rescue Plan Act project plan The Washington County Board of Commissioners has agreed to amend the county’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) project plan to allow for programs for employment training and transitional housing.

Washington County is a direct recipient of $50.9 million under ARPA, of which $25.4 million was received last May to address the expenditures and impacts of COVID-19 and to replace revenue shortages related to the pandemic.

Guidance for those use of funds changed last May, and now the county will use funds to change the scope of the Career Pathways System Project to include adults.

The Career Pathways is universal to individuals of all ages facing disparities and being impacted by the pandemic. Adding adults to this project would enable a larger outreach and impact by providing support to those needing training or assistance who aren’t eligible for regular program funding.

The county will also use the money for the County Emergency/ Transitional Housing Program to provide funding for general operations and administrative support and supplies. This may include communication/marketing, education about the need for emergency housing, cleaning

and incidentals for hotel rooms, consultation fees for people with lived experience, and support services for people accessing services in the shelter when no other funds are available.

County board approves tentative labor agreements

Commissioners approved three tentative labor agreements with county bargaining units for 2022-23. The agreements are with the Minnesota Public Employees Association (MNPEA) Correctional Officer/Public Safety Telecommunicator Unit (Essential Unit); the Minnesota Public Employees Association (MNPEA) Correctional Officer Sergeant/Public Safety Telecommunicator Supervisor Unit (Essential Unit); and the LELS Local 214 Deputy Sheriff Unit.

The agreements have salary adjustments at the beginning of each year, along with market adjustments and retention adjustments. They also set out how much the county will pay for health insurance for each group.

Associated Eye Care has broken ground on its new building, located at 2380 Rosemary Way in Lino Lakes.

Several chamber members, as well as community members, attended a groundbreaking ceremony April 28. Associated Eye Care’s new building will be 12,230 square feet.

• Mental health calls in the city of Hugo, and countywide, are on the rise. (See full story on page 3b .)

• From Memorial Day through the end of September, Blacksmith Lounge will host a variety of events, including auctions, six car shows, one motorcycle swap meet and a fundraising event. Special event permits have been approved for all of Blacksmith’s summer events.

• Community Development Assistant Emily Weber has submitted her letter of resignation, effective May 6. Weber has accepted a job offer as planner for the city of Frisco, Colorado.

Mayor Tom Weidt said, “You have been a joy to work with … It is a big loss for us, but it is a big gain for the city of Frisco.”

Weber said it was a hard decision and that she was sad to leave Hugo.

“This was an exciting opportunity for something new, so I couldn’t say no. It was a hard choice,” she said.

City Administrator Bryan Bear explained, “It is a very important role here in the city of Hugo. Emily started this a few years ago … She took a little bit of a chance on this job as being something a little bit different, and we took a little bit of a chance on her, and it turned out to be a really great fit.” He added, “She is ready for the next step, and she has some great skills that she will bring with her to Colorado.”

The city will now advertise for a community development intern to work on a wide variety of community development, planning, parks and economic development projects.

• Farnham Avenue N. (from 149th St.

N. to Oneka Pkwy N. S) will be added to the city’s list of state aid roadways.

Per state aid rules, a city is allowed to add and/or remove mileage annually, provided it meets necessary criteria.

• Ebert Construction will be paid $143,221 (payment request No. 18) for work completed on the new public works facility. Schreiber Mullaney will receive $479,377 (pay request No. 8) for the new pavilion at Lions Park.

• The Hopkins Schoolhouse Committee has now held its first meeting to see if there is community interest in trying to restore the historic building. The committee has about six months to discuss options and present a plan for the council to consider at a future date. Weidt reminds residents that taxpayer dollars will not be used on any sort of project on the building.

• Residents should expect changes to the fall citywide cleanup. If residents attended the spring event last month, they likely received a flyer detailing the changes. The event will be held Sept. 10 at the new public works facility. Residents can bring all of their trash to the event except household hazardous waste. (Bear explained that the county requested trash and household hazardous waste be collected via separate events.)

Residents should plan to discard their household hazardous waste Sept. 10 or Sept. 17 at the Forest Lake Transit Center.

The next City Council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, May 16, at City Hall.

Nevaeh does a great job advocating for herself. She enjoys spending time with her friends, playing basketball and going to the movies to see a drama or comedy film. She loves Mexican food and going out for coffee. She likes classical and oldies music and admires Tupac. Nevaeh's favorite subject in school is math.

• As it does every year, the city gives citizens a chance to learn about stormwater, as part of the requirements of its National Pollution Discharge Elimination System/State Disposal System (SDS) permit. The city also held a public hearing to allow citizen input on its Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) and the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) program to fulfill the permit obligation. The hearing notice was published in the city’s official newspaper.

These annual formalities are necessary for all public entities, including Centerville, that discharge stormwater into any natural body of water throughout the country. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program based on the 1972 Clean Water Act and delegates local authority to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), which administers the MS4 program.

• The property owners on 6871 Beaver Pond Way can at last start building their fence, after council unanimously approved an encroachment agreement. The fence will encroach on all sides and on rear city drainage and utility easements.

• Centerville has been granted federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding for 2021 and 2022. However, the city must choose between making annual calculations of revenue loss or accepting the standard allowance amount, not to exceed $10 million.

Because the city wants to maximize its flexibility in spending funds and simplify its reporting requirements, it has chosen the standard option for revenue loss. The city must submit its choice on a report.

• Centerville city leaders have a vision

for the future. Following a workshop held prior to the meeting, council discussed and finalized its strategic plan for fiscal year 2022-2023, as compiled from council’s retreat earlier this year and an earlier work session. Council identified three strategic goals: economic development, organizational resilience and community building.

Economic development was defined as developing strategies, programs, initiatives and activities to improve the economic well-being of the city; business relationships; and quality of life for residents. Organizational resilience was defined as promoting sustainable development, well-being and inclusive growth in the city while preparing for future economic, environmental and social changes.

Community building was defined as building and supporting meaningful community connections, services and support for community members in the city.

• The city announced a vacancy on its Parks and Recreation Committee as summer parks programming gets underway. And with a heightened focus on parks in the strategic plan, the next parks committee member will be heavily involved in shaping the future of the city’s parks. To apply, complete an online form or stop in to City Hall to obtain an application.

• Be a part of planning the annual summer festival. Volunteers are still needed for Fete des Lacs, to be held July 12-17. If interested, please contact City Hall at 651-429-3232.

CENTENNIAL HALL OF FAME: Induction honors former staff members and student FROM PAGE 1

honors alumni and individuals who have made a significant impact on Centennial Schools. The Hall of Fame has two categories: Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Service. The former honors individuals who have a longstanding history of service to the district and who have provided service of time and commitment to education. This year marks the eighth addition to the list of honorees.

Jill Becken (2000-2019) Becken served as a teacher and the girls basketball coach from 2000 to 2019. She is honored for her dedication and development of a level of excellence of the Centennial Girls Basketball Program, for the caring relationships she built with the many skilled players and coaching staff, and for positively impacting students by giving them experiences and leadership opportunities. Becken’s Centennial coaching career record of 281 wins and 64 losses as head varsity coach for 12 years led to eight conference championships, five section championships and six state tournament appearances (five in 12 seasons), which includes the titles of state runner-up in 2009 and placing third in 2019. Becken can also claim six section Coach of the Year awards and was named 4A State Coach of the Year in 2005.

Becken was unable to attend the Hall of Fame induction last week because she is recovering from back surgery. Her husband, Pete Becken, accepted the award and spoke on her behalf.

“Jill wrote some notes for me … She wanted to say ‘Thank you so much for this honor. I’m humbled by the recognition and to be mentioned in the same group as the other members of this Hall of Fame,’” he on Jill’s behalf. “‘It’s important to surround yourself with great people, and that’s exactly what I had throughout my tenure at Centennial in the math department and also my coaching staff throughout the years. I was blessed with incredible student athletes throughout my career. I have many fond memories throughout coaching and teaching, most of them having to do with the connections I made and the laughter in the gym and the classroom.’”

Hegseth saw tremendous growth in the communities the district serves while he was at Centennial, and celebrated the first team state championship (boys hockey, 2004) proving Centennial had strong programs. Hegseth was named a three-time Section Activities Director of the Year and nominated by the Minnesota Activities Director Association for the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators National Distinguished Service Award for length of service, accomplishments and contributions at the state, local and national levels. He was named the State of Minnesota Class AA Activities Director of the Year and was the recipient of the Northwest Suburban Conference Distinguished Service Award. He also served as board member of the Minnesota State High School League.

“These are the kinds of things you don't set out to do, you don’t expect to achieve, they just are sort of thrust upon you, and when you realize somebody really appreciated the things you tried to do, it’s pretty humbling. It makes you feel good and it also makes you think back on how long you have been doing it,” Hegseth said.

COPS&COURTS • COPS&COURTS • COPS&COURTS HUGO POLICE REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents: • Deputies on routine patrol at 1:38 a.m. March 27 in the 15000 block of Forest Blvd. N. reported seeing a goose in the middle of the roadway.

Deputies pulled the goose over and shepherded it safely off the roadway.

• A resident in the 14000 block of Victor Hugo Blvd. N. at 2:44 a.m. March 27 reported property damage.

• On April 2 at 1:18 a.m. Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputies on routine patrol observed a parked vehicle that was used in the incident above that occurred one week prior. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and did not reveal what happened next.

• Deputies issued a written warning for speed at 10:06 a.m. March 28 in the area of Goodview Avenue N. and Geneva Avenue N. • A resident at an unknown address at 2:46 p.m. March 28 reported that someone using her Social Security number fraudulently opened up several accounts.

• Theft was reported at 1:01 a.m. March 29 in the 14000 block of Geneva Avenue N. • A westbound motorist was cited at 10:37 a.m. March 29 in the area of Oneka Lake Blvd. N. and Geneva Avenue N. for speeding 39 mph in a 30 mph zone by deputies on stationary patrol, who clocked him on radar. The driver told deputies he didn’t know how fast he was going.

• A resident in the 6000 block of 145th Circle N. at 12:08 p.m. March 29 reported receiving an anonymous text from someone trying to “verify her address.” The complainant did not “confirm” her address. Deputies advised the complainant to delete the text and block the number.

• The Hugo postmaster in the 5000 block of 150th Street N. at 12:16 p.m. March 29 reported receiving three Minnesota provisional driver’s licenses turned over by the letter carrier delivering them to the Rosemary Apartments in the 4000 block of Rosemary Way. None of the driver’s licenses had addresses corresponding to those that had previously reported mailbox theft, so the postmaster turned the items over to the WCSO for evidence as instructed by the postal investigator.

• A resident in the 5000 block of 124th Street N. at 12:45 p.m. March 29 reported that $25,000 was stolen from her Well Fargo savings account. The complainant needed a case number, as she is working with the Wells Fargo fraud department.

• A resident in the 13000 block of Fletcher Lane at 7:13 p.m. March 29 reported a catalytic converter theft.

• Deputies at 1:06 a.m. March 30 conducted a traffic stop in the area of 130th Street N. and Farnham Avenue N. for license plates that did not match the vehicle they were on. The driver was cited.

• A resident in the 4000 block of 149th Street N. at 8:23 p.m. March 30 reported receiving a flyer from the U.S. Department of State and believed it was fake.

Deputies advised her contact the agency to validate the flyer.

• An unidentified motorist was arrested at 2:07 a.m.

March 31 in the area of Forest Blvd. N. and 145th Street N., following a traffic stop.

• An motorist was cited for speed at 4:56 p.m. March 31 in the 6000 block of 170th Street N. • A Minnesota motorist was cited at 8:18 p.m. March 31 on westbound Frenchman Road at Victor Hugo Blvd. for driving after suspension and failure to provide proof of insurance, following a traffic stop for an inoperable rear taillight.

Although deputies activated their emergency lights and siren, the motorist kept on going and signaled multiple times before being made to pull in to a parking lot.

A computer check during the stop showed the driver to be suspended. As deputies reminded him he should have stopped, the driver was unable to come up with proof of insurance for the vehicle. The vehicle was left in the parking lot awaiting the arrival of a licensed driver to take over at the wheel.

• A biting dog was reported at 12:17 p.m. April 1 in the 12000 block of Keller Avenue and later located.

• An adult male was arrested on a felony check forgery warrant at 5:01 p.m. April 1 in the 16000 block of Elmcrest Avenue N. after deputies received a report of his whereabouts. The complainant advised deputies that the male was running power to the house via a generator and that there was no heat in the residence.

In addition, a dead horse had been left on the property for two weeks.

The suspect is well known to officers, and ran inside the residence when deputies approached the scene.

• A Minnesota motorist was cited at 6:25 p.m. April 1 on Frenchman Road and Everton Avenue N. for displaying vehicle registration that expired more than six month prior, after Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies on patrol observed the May 2021 tabs and an object suspended from the rearview mirror.

The subject told deputies he was working on the issue and had previously been cited for the same expired registration.

• Deputies on patrol on Forest Blvd. N. at 1:14 a.m. April 4 reported the traffic lights at the intersection of Forest Blvd. N. and 140th Street N. no longer working.

After investigation, deputies discovered a power outage in the area and advised Xcel Energy and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) of the situation. Deputies provided lights at the intersection to aid with traffic control. At 2:52 a.m. that same morning, deputies responded to a report of a low-hanging wire and, in their second call to Xcel during the wee hours, advised the company of the hazardous wire.

• Deputies were called out to the scene of a dispute in the 14000 block of Geneva Avenue N. at 10:17 a.m.

April 5, in which parties were going through a breakup. A male on scene to retrieve property refused to leave, but fled before deputies arrived. The couple also argued over an Apple MacBook.

• A caller in the 5000 block of 130th Street N. at 8:15 p.m.

April 5 reported two individuals trying to gain entry to his vehicle.

• Deputies on break at the Kwik Trip in the 14000 block of Victor Hugo Blvd. N. at 2:24 a.m. April 6 were approached by a woman who reported that her neighbor was following her, as part of an ongoing dispute with a person with whom deputies were well familiar. The complainant said her neighbor was also intoxicated. Shortly after deputies finished talking with the complainant, the male neighbor in question entered the store. When deputies spoke with the male, they didn’t notice any signs of intoxication. Deputies described the male as appearing to be conducting normal business at the time — as most people do at 2:24 a.m., after all. Deputies later advised the woman that if she felt harassed, she could request an order for protection (OFP) from Washington County.

• A vehicle parked in the 13000 block of Fenway Blvd.

N. at 9:52 a.m. April 6 received a citation under the windshield for displaying registration that expired in December 2022. At 10:21 a.m. that same morning, deputies slipped another citation under the windshield wipers of a different vehicle, parked in the 4000 block of 158th Street N., for displaying tabs that expired in November 2022. It is yet to be determined at this time whether deputies were unsure of the year they were living in and will soon have two motorists pointing this out to them in court or whether someone along the paper chain committed a typographical error in the report-writing process.

• A business in the 15000 block of Forest Blvd. N. at 12:43 p.m. April 6 reported a fence cut to gain access to their yard approximately two weeks ago, likely for the purpose of stealing catalytic converters.

None were taken.

• A resident in the 15000 block of Foster Drive N. at 1:15 p.m. April 6 reported an attempted grandparent’s scam in which an “attorney” requested $8,000 for a bond. The complainant knew it was a scam, didn’t give any money and blocked the phone number.

• The Hugo postmaster in the 5000 block of 150th Street N. at 1:23 p.m. April 6 reported finding 10 identification cards in an outgoing mailbox in the 4000 block of Rosemary Way. U.S. Postal Inspector Jesse Swanson advised the postmaster to turn the I.D.’s over to deputies. Deputies will mail back the I.D.’s and phone the inspector to see if there is any video available from the apartment complex from which the I.D.’s originated. Flashing back to a previous report — on March 29, a letter carrier turned over three provisional I.D.’s that were to be delivered to an apartment complex in the 4000 block of Rosemary Way.

• Residents in the 15000 block of Forest Blvd. N. at 3:56 p.m. April 6 reported an unwanted person in the home and asked deputies to remove their adult son.

Deputies advised the complainant that their son, who is known to them, has legal residence in the home and that the complainant must start the eviction process to get him kicked out.

• Deputies issued a citation for speed at 9:44 p.m. April 6 in the 16000 block of Forest Blvd. N. • A resident in the 5000 block of 152nd Street N. at 9:03 a.m. April 7 reported his gunsmith shop had gone out of business and asked deputies how to retrieve his guns from the premises. Deputies advised the complainant to contact the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for assistance.

• A complainant in the 5000 block of 150th Street N. at 12:17 p.m. April 7 reported her husband for using a chainsaw to destroy his home when she went to retrieve her personal property.

LINO LAKES POLICE REPORTS • An officer made contact with an individual driving an ATV who was violating a city ordinance and DNR registration law in the 6500 block of Enid Trail April 21. The driver was made aware of the ordinances and later corrected their registration violation.

• An officer was dispatched to a phone call reporting a theft in the 100 block of Century Trail April 22.

The officer documented the incident and provided the caller with a case number. The investigation is ongoing.

• An officer stopped a vehicle whose registered owner had an expired license in the 6000 block of Hodgson Road April 22. The driver was subsequently arrested for several offenses.

• An officer responded to a property damage accident on Ash Street and Otter Lake Road April 22. The incident was documented and the case number was provided to individuals at the scene.

• An officer and fire responded to a local gas station for a fuel spill in the 7600 block of Lake Drive April 22.

The fire division cleaned up the spill.

• An officer took a phone call requesting extra patrol due to speeding vehicles in the 7400 block of Sunset Avenue April 23. Extra patrol will be conducted in the area.

• Officers responded to a residence regarding reported damage to property in the 6300 block of Holly Drive North April 23. The damage was documented in the area checked. No suspects were identified.

• Officers responded to a neighborhood on a report of a disorderly male in the 100 block of Century Trail April 24. The male was gone prior to officers’ arrival, and his identity is unknown.

• An officer responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle in the 600 block of Apollo Drive April 25. The officer made contact with the registered owner, and the vehicle was moved.

• An officer stopped a vehicle in the 7000 block of 21st Avenue South April 25 because the registration on the vehicle was revoked and the registered owner didn’t have a valid driver’s license. The adult female driver was arrested and booked into jail for driving after cancellation inimical to public safety and displaying revoked license plates.

• An officer responded to a follow-up request in the 7100 block of Whippoorwill Lane April 25. The caller believed stolen property was at a Lino Lakes location.

Officer documented the incident and the stolen property was not located.

• While on patrol, an officer witnessed two dogs chasing wildlife on private property that backs up to a city park in the 6500 block of Pheasant Run South April 25. The officer spoke with the owner of the dogs about city ordinances.

• An officer was requested to assist an officer from another agency with a traffic stop on Brian Drive and 72nd Street April 25. The officer arrived and assisted as needed until they were cleared by the requesting agency.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS Hugo man convicted of assaulting correctional employee

Trevor Joseph Wunderlich, 42, of Hugo, has been convicted of assault for an incident that occurred in June 2021.

Wunderlich was charged with fourth-degree assault of a correctional employee. According to the criminal complaint, on June 15, 2021 a Washington County deputy was informed of an assault that had occurred within the county jail located at 15015 62nd Street North, Stillwater.

The assault occurred when a corrections officer was escorting Wunderlich to his first appearance on a second-degree assault-dangerous weapon charge. According to the complaint, while three correction officers were escorting Wunderlich, the defendant used his elbow and struck one of the correction officers in the face, causing a contusion and swelling. While securing Wunderlich, the corrections officer suffered further injuries to his thumbs.

Per the complaint, the assault was captured on video. In the video, Wunderlich can be heard calling the correctional officers derogatory terms and verbally threatening them. Wunderlich

admitted to the assault and at one point told the assaulted officer, “I should have elbowed you f****n harder.” After the assault, the corrections officer was sent to the hospital to receive medical care.

Wunderlich received a stay of execution for 15 months, stayed for four years, consecutive to another conviction, as well as four years of probation. He will also need to pay restitution in the amount of $1,948.

Timothy Allen Amacher, 41, and Colleen Larson, 24, both of St. Paul, have been charged with firstdegree premeditated murder after allegedly shooting an off-duty forensic scientist employed by the Minneapolis Police Department.

According to the criminal complaints, at 7:33 p.m. April 20, officers responded to a shooting at a supervised parenting center located in the 3000 block of University Avenue in Minneapolis. When officers arrived in the parking lot, they found a 33-year-old female victim with gunshot wounds to the right side of her neck and forearm. A witness stated that the shooting happened in the parking lot. She said she saw the female suspect run up behind the victim and put an object to the victim’s neck and then heard two “bangs” before the suspect ran away.

Officers obtained surveillance video from the parking lot. It shows the victim sitting in her vehicle waiting to pick up her son. A 2022 black Dodge Ram without a license plate arrives and parks south of the parking lot. A female, later identified in the complaint as Larson, wearing all black, a hood, gloves and a medical mask, gets out of the truck and conceals herself behind a fence until victim gets out of her vehicle. As the victim approaches the facility on foot, Larson, holding a firearm, runs up behind victim. The video reportedly shows the suspect raising the gun up to point at the victim, but the shooting happens just outside the camera view. Further examination of the video revealed that, approximately six minutes before the shooting, the suspect reportedly appears to be scouting out the scene by slowly driving, and later walking, by the parking lot. Officers obtained a search warrant for the GPS data of the Dodge Ram registered to Amacher. Coupled with Amacher and Larson’s cell phone location data, the complaint states that officers were able to determine that Amacher switched vehicles with Larson at his place of business, World Taekwondo Academy in White Bear Lake, approximately three hours before Math multiplies future the shooting. Amacher then drove the Jeep to the opportunities! HOW CPA GOT MIDDLE SCHOOLERS OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE POST-COVID

T

wo weeks of team building even before they cast the show, lots of group bonding, another big thing was having students create their own community guidelines As students emerged from many months of masking and online school, Maddie Ripperger found that for her middle school students it was difficult to bounce back into socializing with their peers.

“One of the big things we experienced last summer when we did some shows outdoors in a Covid friendly way and we were doing “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” is that we noticed some negative self-talk and anxiety around performing without masks,” said Ripperger.

It became evident that after months away from their peers, the students weren’t getting the socialization they needed, so Ripperger got creative.

The students participated in two weeks of teambuilding activities before they were cast in the show.

Through team bonding and a set of community guidelines, the middle school students were encouraged to get back into the swing of socializing.

Another thing that really bolstered the students’ confidence was a compliment wall of sticky notes where students could write down positive comments to fellow actors.

“If at any time you see someone holding up the community guidelines or is doing something really

great as an actor, put it on the wall. And look up at the wall when you need a jolt of positivity in your life,” said Ripperger.

After seeing a need for middle school students to spend time with each other outside of rehearsal, CPA has begun a new program called Pizza Performance PopUps where once a month on Fridays and Saturdays, students are provided a scene to work on with an artist all while receiving positive feedback from their peers.

“They come into the pizza parties with such a positive energy and it feels like such a night and day difference from when they came in a couple of months ago,” said Ripperger.

Ripperger believes that theater education is a great place for students to practice their social emotions skills as it allows students to take on new emotions from the characters they play and build their empathic skills.

“Young people have such creative and imaginative ideas. What I love about working with those middle schoolers is that we’re letting them use the creativity they have. I hope the older they get, they know they’re able to make big choices and make big mistakes because that’s just part of the learning process,” said Ripperger.

EMERGING ARTIST KIANNA SAUNDERS

ianna Saunders has a lot on

her plate. The junior attending the St. Paul Conservatory has made appearances in shows like “The Sound of Music” where she played Liesl, “Kiss of Death” and recently Saunders performed in a modern dance show for her January Term class.

Her current projects include “Octet,” which is being directed by the seniors at St. Paul Conservatory and the Children’s Performing Arts production of “Grease” where she is playing Rizzo.

“I had been practicing for Rizzo to audition. I’ve never really played the mean girl before. I tend to be the ingenue in shows, but Rizzo is feisty and has a sarcastic attitude,” said Saunders.

Saunders will be hitting the stage for “Grease” this June 19 through 25, but before then, much of Saunder’s time will be taken up preparing for

“Triple Threat.” Like other area students, Saunders is waiting to hear if she’ll be one in a group of 24 known for their singing, dancing and acting who will have the chance to perform at the Ordway.

If selected she would continue on to a live audition that would determine if she is one of three students to be sent to New York on a trip to meet up with other young artists.

When asked what it would mean to her if she were selected she said it would mean she would be “very busy.”

Saunders says that so far in her acting career she has been the proudest of her work on “Kiss of Death.”

“We had an amazing director and I was very proud of myself to expand my acting in that show,” said Saunders.

Between rehearsals and auditions, Saunders is thinking about what’s next.

Saunders hopes to get her BFA in musical theater and has started to research where she continues her love for the arts.
