New park name will recognize those who give back

HUGO — As construction of Lions Park nears completion, some more decisions need to be made. Specifically, the names of both the park and the new pavilion.

The City Council has directed city staff to put together sign illustrations for the two park monument signs as well as a sign on the pavilion. The council will likely consider those for final approval July 18, but is leaning toward the name Lions Volunteer Park and Peder Pedersen Pavilion.

Mayor Tom Weidt explained that park improvements have been an ongoing discussion for many years.

From Sugar Fairy to dog stylist.

Hugo resident Robin Udstuen started her home bakery business, Sugar Fairy, back in August 2018. Because one small business wasn’t enough to tackle, she decided to take on another venture, a dog grooming home business.

“I’m a small-business fan,” Udstuen explained.

The Sugar Fairy side of the business has continued to grow over the years, so much so that Udstuen has searched for a storefront space but found it cost prohibitive due to the high rents.

So, she decided to stay put in her own home but found herself missing the grooming industry, after she decided

During the traffic stop, deputies detected the odor of pot coming from the vehicle. When deputies asked the driver if there was anything in the car, she willingly produced a small jar containing possible marijuana.

During their probable cause search of the driver's purse, deputies located a glass bubble pipe used for smoking methamphetamines with a white powdery residue inside. Deputies also found a black zippered pouch with several hypodermic needles and a small baggie containing a white crystalline substance in the vehicle.

• A business in the 14000 block of Victor Hugo Blvd.

N. at 6:41 p.m. June 8 reported being passed a counterfeit $5 bill. After contacting the bill's donor, deputies determined the bill passing to be inadvertent.

• A business in the 5000 block of 140th Street N. at 9:59 a.m. June 9 reported an employee for stealing money out of the cash register.

• A Minnesota motorist was cited at 4:36 p.m. June 9 on Frenchman Road and Everton Avenue N. for driving after suspension, following a traffic complaint and a traffic stop for expired registration.

• A motorcyclist was cited at 9:12 p.m. June 9 on westbound 177th Street N. and Forest Blvd. N. for speeding 69 mph in a 55 mph zone, after eastbound deputies observed a rapidly approaching single headlight and confirmed a speed of 78 mph on radar.

The biker was also warned for expired registration.

• A driver was cited at 7:44 p.m. June 10 in the 5000 block of Frenchman Road for making a left turn while failing to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic. His maneuver almost caused an accident.

• A suspicious male reported for pulling into a driveway in the 6000 block of Oneka Lake Blvd.

N. at 10:26 p.m. June 11, turned out to be a man pulling over to watch the Hugo Good Neighbor Days fireworks.

• An unknown driver was arrested on a warrant at 10:50 p.m. June 11 in the area of Frenchman Road and Forest Blvd. N. following a traffic stop for speeding that led to a mobile computer database check.

• A resident in the 13000 block of Freeland Avenue N. at 8:01 a.m. June 12 reported property damage to her home.

• The driver of a grey sedan was cited at 9:10 a.m. June 12 in the 14000 block of Forest Blvd. N. for displaying tabs that expired in September 2021. The driver admitted knowing about the registration and that he should have updated it more than nine months ago.

• The driver of a black Honda coupe was cited at 10:12 a.m. June 13 in the area of 120th Street N. and Forest Blvd. N. for failing to register his vehicle within 60 days of moving to the state, after he was pulled over for having a tree-shaped air freshener hanging

from his rearview mirror. During the traffic stop, deputies ran his plate information and discovered the motorist was driving on a suspended California license. The driver, who moved back to Minnesota in September 2021, said he didn't want to register the vehicle until he knew what his job situation would be after graduating.

• The driver of a vehicle with smoke colored lenses over the headlights was arrested on a felony warrant for theft at 11:04 a.m. June 13 in the 6000 block of 137th Street N. following a traffic stop for the headlights and subsequent license plate check of the registered owner. The driver admitted to not having a valid driver's license and was unable to provide proof of insurance. She was also cited for these traffic violations.

• A resident in the 13000 block of Elmcrest Avenue N. at 12:33 p.m. June 14 reported that a check she had put into the mailbox was stolen and deposited.

• A suspicious person reported in front of a residence in the 5000 block of 129th Drive N. at 7:57 p.m. June 14 turned out to be a friend of one of the residents who had no key to get inside.

• Deputies conducted a boat stop on a personal watercraft on Bald Eagle Lake at 8:07 p.m. June 14 and issued a written warning for being on the lake after hours.

• A juvenile was reported at 8:55 p.m. June 14 for trespassing on a property in the 14000 block of Garden Way N. as part of an ongoing issue.

• A juvenile was cited at 10:47 p.m. June 14 for trespassing and for causing damage to property after he was caught on surveillance video kicking over a mailbox in the 13000 block of Freeland Avenue N. and dragging it down the street.

• A Minnesota motorist was cited at 7:20 p.m. June 16 in the area of Finale Avenue N. and 147th Street N. for handheld use of a wireless device while driving a motor vehicle. Deputies on patrol spotted her vehicle driving at a slow rate of speed and the driver with a phone in her hand. The driver told deputies she was trying to use a GPS. • A motorist was arrested for DWI at 1:14 a.m. June 17 in the area of Frenchman Road and Oneka Parkway N. after deputies on patrol observed him unable to maintain a single lane. He also didn't have a driver's license to present. After the driver showed signs of impairment, deputies conducted several standard field sobriety tests and a portable breath test, on which the driver registered a blood alcohol content of 0.196.

• An unidentified male was arrested for undisclosed offenses at 4:47 p.m. June 18 on Frenchman Road following a traffic stop for equipment violation.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following incidents: • A motorist was arrested on a Hennepin County warrant at 2:30 a.m. June 4 on Geneva Avenue N. and Oneka Lake Blvd. N. The driver was also cited for possessing marijuana and paraphernalia in a motor vehicle and failure to provide proof of insurance, following a traffic stop for a nonfunctioning headlight. During the traffic stop, deputies detected a strong odor of marijuana and found a grinder with cannabis residue inside.

• An unidentified driver was arrested for DUI at 8:08 p.m. June 4 on Everton Avenue N. and Victor Path N. after deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident and discovered the driver to be under the influence of alcohol.

• A male motorist was arrested for DWI at 11:30 p.m. June 4 in the 14000 block of Victor Hugo Blvd.

• Witnesses at 9:39 a.m. June 5 reported observing a male riding a bicycle up to vehicles in the 15000 block of Empress Avenue N. and attempting to break into them. The male was also seen entering two unlocked vehicles and rummaging through the center consoles. It is unknown whether the male harvested any booty. Deputies attempted to contact the vehicle owners and left their business card at the residences. Follow-up will continue.

• The driver of a silver sedan was cited for driving after revocation at 11:31 a.m. June 5 on Forest Blvd. N. and 146th Street N. after deputies pulled her over for a severely cracked windshield and no front license plate. The driver identified herself with an Minnesota identification card only and admitted she had an invalid license and shouldn't be driving. Although she was not the registered owner of the vehicle, she did manage to produce proof of insurance. After deputies reviewed their mobile computer records, they noted the driver had five similar traffic stops for driving after revocation. A valid driver arrived at the scene to drive the vehicle away.

• An unidentified motorist was arrested for DWI offenses in the area of 125th Street N. and Goodview Avenue N. at 12:33 a.m. June 6 after deputies tried to pull him over for failing to stop at a stop sign and ended up in a motor vehicle pursuit.

• A resident in the 4000 block of Preserve Court N. at 12:33 p.m. June 6 reported misplacing her driver's license and was concerned about possible fraud.

Deputies advised the complainant to contact her financial institutions.

• A motorist was arrested for DWI at 4:38 a.m. June 7 on Forest Blvd. N. and 152nd Street N. after deputies observed the driver's failure to maintain lanes.

• A Hugo woman, 36, was arrested for possessing narcotics and paraphernalia in a motor vehicle

A 23-year-old Hugo man was hospitalized and needed to undergo surgery after being shot while he was at a movie theater.

On June 28 at approximately 10:04 p.m., Oakdale Police were summoned to Marcus Cinema, located at 5667 Hadley Ave. N, on a report of a shooting. According to the police, the suspect was reported to have fled the theater on foot, and the shooting does not appear to be random.

Who will be the winner?

t’s the season when you, our readers, pick your favorite local professionals, establishments, services, retailers, organizations, and more through the Best of The Press contest. As you know, we launched this contest 3 years ago at the height of the pandemic. We felt it was a fun, engaging way to support local businesses and organizations when they were hit the hardest.

Since then, voting by readers has nearly doubled in some of our markets. It is because of your nominations that we learn who is the Best of the Press in our community.

Votes are being accepted July 13 through Aug. 3, so the time has come to vote early and often. This is one time when you can vote every 24 hours, and we want you to. By doing this you’re helping the Best of the Press nominees rise up to the top of in their respective categories. The Great Mystery - End Of 2022 Legislative Session

A

pparently there is a lot of confusion about how the 2022 session ended, specifically surrounding K-12 education. As chair of the Senate’s education committee, I can help clear the air.

There are some people with insincere motives who will say the issue is funding, but it’s not. Since 2017, Senate Republicans have approved historic funding for education, including $18.6 billion in total Legislator education funding in 2017, 2% Lingo annual student Roger formula Chamberlain increases in 2019, and $1.1 billion in funding increases in 2021 – including the largest formula growth in 15 years.

This year, schools gave us a simple agenda – focus on literacy, don’t add any more burdens, and increase funding for special education and mental health.

That is what we did. The Senate’s original K12 budget proposal focused solely on academics, specifically reading. It was a logical decision given only 50% of our public K12 students are reading at grade level. Our proposal included about $58 million to support educators in reading instruction. No

new mandates or additional burdens. Incidentally, the proposal had broad support; virtually everyone agreed with it.

In the closing days of session, Senate Republicans worked to reach a compromise with the governor and House by providing another $1 billion to K12. To give you some perspective, that is roughly 20 times the average amount of education spending in a nonbudget year.

You may agree or disagree with that amount -- too low, too high -- but that was the compromise. That is the hand we were dealt so we did what the schools asked.

Here are the facts of what happened. This is all public information, posted to the conference committee site and shared with the press.

The Senate made four offers in the closing days of session.

Our offers were all simple: we focused on funding for literacy, special education, and mental health. Our proposals included the original literacy funding, an additional $15 million for mental health, and a huge 6-fold increase in funding for special education.

We also proposed funding early childhood education scholarships and accepted some provisions that Gov. Walz and the House had asked for.

In return, the House sent us unserious offer after unserious offer. Their first offer included about 100 spending items and hundreds of policies that

increased burdens, mandates, and costs on schools. Their offers included only a fraction of funding for literacy and special education, which were two of the top priorities for school officials this year. And near the end, they even sent an offer that included $56 million for unemployment benefits for part-time workers – a proposal so far out of left field that it literally had not even been discussed by the committee this year.

In summary, the Senate offered exactly what the schools requested: no new mandates or new policy, support for reading, money for mental health, and a 6-fold increase in special education funding.

The House, unfortunately, repeatedly sent us unserious offers. We had a real opportunity to do great things for parents, students, and educators. But we missed that opportunity because the House was more concerned about political maneuvering than getting our work done.

Senior Club launches free fitness classes

Residents register high satisfaction with life in county

The Hugo Senior Club will begin to offer free fitness classes for seniors at 11:30 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays at Rice Lake Centre, located at 6900 137th St. N in Hugo. The personalized exercise class is designed for seniors to improve their balance, strength and flexibility in a group setting. Classes will be led by a nationally certified trainer. There will be periodic fitness tests so participants can track their progress. 31st annual Fete des Lacs boasts ‘Centerville Strong’ theme

This year’s Fete des Lacs “Festival of Lakes” marks the 31st annual celebration in Centerville.

While many popular attractions remain this year, some new events have also been added to the docket. The festival is scheduled from July 12-17.

This year’s theme is “Centerville Strong.”

The Fete des Lacs committee says it came up with the idea because of the way the community came together to assist a local family after it had experienced the tragedy of a house fire. (See article on page 1 to learn more about this year’s grand marshals.)

Traditional events will appear again, such as Music in the Park, Bald Eagle Water Ski Show, kickball, softball and cornhole tournaments, fireworks, 5K/8K/Kids Run, Paddle des Lacs, KidsFest and the annual parade. The fireworks

display will take place at 10 p.m. on Friday at LaMotte Park.

The traditional medallion hunt is not happening; however, there’s a new medallion “hunt” afoot.

This year, the medallion finds YOU. The Fete des Lacs committee created small, etched plexiglass medallions, each about the size of a large keychain.

One random person at the first four days of Fete des Lacs events will receive a medallion by participating in that evening’s event. The events are as follows: • Tuesday, July 12: Opening Ceremony & Music in the Park • Wednesday, July 13: Public Safety Night • Thursday, July 14: Main Street Market & Water Ski Show • Friday, July 15: “KidsDance” Interactive DJ for families The medallion can then be turned into Centerville City Hall for a $100 prize.

There will also be a number of new events this year. Centerville Elementary will hold an open house from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 14. Attendees can see the new addition and learn about the school community and education. A KidsDance will feature a kid-friendly DJ and dancing from 6:308:30 p.m. Friday, July 15.

A Bark Party with dog-friendly activities and vendors will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 16. Also on Saturday, there will be a climbing wall from noon to 5 p.m. at Family Fest along with pony rides, bounce houses, balloon animals, face painting, NERF archery and a scouting booth. All of these events are offered at no cost.

Concessions will be available for all Tuesday and Wednesday events. On Saturday, there will be a Beer Garden and food trucks along with concessions.

school. Just a few days after the fire, they received a knock on the door and were surprised with generous clothing and gift card donations from the local Lions Club.

A close family friend from the community also established a GoFundMe page in the Handahls’ name, which provided the family a sustained source of donations for several weeks to help get them back on their feet. Through the fundraiser, several community organizations made generous donations to help the family deal with the tragedy.

The family’s church, Living Waters Lutheran and its members, collected donations for them as well. Last but not least, schoolteachers and administrators collected donations and also donated themselves to help the family’s cause.

Members of the Handahl family believe that one of the greatest silver linings from their experience is the lesson they have learned about the importance of helping others in need, and Hilary looks forward to teaching her kids the joys of paying it forward.

“Perhaps the greatest source of feeling overwhelmed has come from acknowledging we won’t be able to express our gratitude to each and every one of our supporters. But we have decided to turn those humble feelings of helplessness into continued motivation for helping others in need,” Hilary said.

The experience itself, she says, was humbling in that it taught the family just how quickly their lives can change when it is least expected. Despite the intensity of the fire and damage it caused, family members were safe and unharmed. Hilary says the most humbling aspect of the experience has been the support and generosity they have received from the community.

The family’s neighbors took them into their home when the fire occurred while the Handahls made arrangements with extended family for temporary lodging. The local firefighters and police arrived at the scene immediately to suppress the fire and help the family navigate the tragedy and prepare for next steps.

“It was incredibly inspiring to see the team of firefighters work so hard to save what they could of our home while being covered in icicles from the residual spray of water and freezing temperatures,” Hilary said.

Meanwhile, other neighbors set into action a support system for gathering donations and gift cards to provide the family with some immediate needs such as clothes and food. One particular neighborhood family offered their home as the drop off site for all donations while they and other neighbors set to work to organize all incoming items and packaged them up for retrieval. While the Handahls were temporarily living with extended family in Blaine after the fire, they received help carpooling their kids to and from

She had previously entered when she was in sixth grade, but then the pandemic happened and plans had to change.

Latcham said she lived with her grandmother in Centerville for a few months, so when she heard about the contest, she was really excited to do it. “I absolutely fell in love with the town. I just loved it so much,” she said.

Latcham’s design is inspired by all the different things someone can do when attending Fete des Lacs. Her design not only incorporates the Centerville logo, but features a variety of events, including fireworks, Paddle des Lacs and the 5K/8K run.

“Art is my life,” Latcham said, adding that she really enjoys drawing and painting. “I love doing things that inspire me to create.”

Latcham doesn’t have any big plans for that prize money just yet and plans to save it.

It seems fitting that this year’s Fete des Lacs theme is “Centerville Strong,” because the logo competition for this year was also strong.

There were over 150 entries in this year’s contest. The logo competition not only offers youth the chance to show off their artistic talents, but to have the opportunity to win a cash prize.

Students at Centerville Elementary and Centennial Middle School were eligible to participate in the contest. Logo designs were encouraged to include one of the following: • “Centerville Strong” theme • The city’s Native American and/ or French heritage • Two lakes (Peltier Lake and Centerville Lake) • Diversity of the many Fete des Lacs events

Along with having their logo featured on the festival’s 8K/5K T-shirts, posters, flyers and other promotional items, the first-place winners receive a cash prize of $100. Second-place winners receive $ 50 and honorable mentions receive $25.

For Rajewsky-Guimond, who will be a fifth grader this fall, this was her first time entering the logo contest. “I wanted to do it for fun,” she said, adding that she likes art and drawing.

Her dad gave her some ideas that inspired her design, which features a large tree, compass, tent, flowers and fireworks.

“I was really happy,” she said about when she was notified of her success. She ended up giving her prize money to her parents, who had recently purchased an iPad for her.

Makena Latcham, who will enter ninth grade at Centennial High School this fall, was excited to give the logo contest a try again.

“The Fete des Lacs Logo judging committee had a difficult time deciding on the final winning logos, as there were so many great artists in our midst. Ultimately, we selected entries that we felt best represented our rich community and the resources around us, had great use of color and shading and best met the contest rules as presented,” said Lonni Olson, Fete Des Lacs Planning Committee member. “We pared each school down to eight to 10 entries and took a vote on the remainder. Overall the Metro has been one of the driest parts of the state. Northern Minnesota as well as southern Minnesota have received timely rainfalls and are faring much better. July hasn’t been much better here in the Metro as I’ve totaled under a half inch. Sunday’s rain, poorly timed, only produced 0.03 of an inch. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for rain but right now it doesn’t look like significant rain is in our future.

100 years of literary lakes and legends

“This Side of Paradise,” F. Scott Fitzgerald’s first published novel, would likely not have been possible without the summers he spent in White Bear Lake.

The summer of 2022 marks 100 years since the writer and his wife, Zelda, spent a rather memorable summer at the White Bear Yacht Club.

However, the town played a much larger role in launching Fitzgerald to the international fame he has today.

It was 1919 when Fitzgerald returned to St. Paul.

World War I had ended. His manuscript for “This Side of Paradise” had been rejected twice, and Southern belle Zelda Sayre refused to marry him unless he made something of himself. It’s safe to say the young Fitzgerald was under plenty of pressure.

That summer, Fitzgerald turned to his childhood friend, Katherine Tighe, to edit his rewritten manuscript of “This Side of Paradise.”

“She was absolutely pivotal in his early success.

The thing that really made him was ‘This Side of Paradise,’” said local historian and writer Mary Jane LaVigne. “She was a really critical reader for him, and made some important suggestions on.”

Tighe, who was born just blocks from where Fitzgerald was born, lived in a house on Dayton Avenue in St. Paul for most of her childhood, but her summers were spent on Manitou Island in her grandmother’s home. According to LaVigne, the home, which dates back to the early 1880s, is still on the island today.

It is now understood that it was that very home where Tighe and Fitzgerald carried out most of their editing work. Scholars have only recently learned that this home on Manitou Island could very well be where Fitzgerald made “This Side of Paradise” the novel we know today.

LaVigne points out that though the novel launched Fitzgerald’s career, “This Side of Paradise” is a famously poorly edited novel.

“After Katherine and Scott were done with it, it went off to Maxwell Perkins (Fitzgerald’s editor) and he apparently didn’t make any corrections at all,” said LaVigne.

The book includes misspellings and flaws in timelines despite Tighe markings and corrections on the manuscript.

“It would not be something to brag about being connected with as an editor,” explained LaVigne.

The slew of errors is likely because Fitzgerald was in such a hurry to get the book published. As the story goes, though Fitzgerald’s parents were supportive of his writing career, he felt pressure

to foot the bill. He had landed a job at the Northern Train Yard, only to show up in sailing gear. Just as he had spent the last of his money on a pair of overalls, he found out “This Side of Paradise” was going to be published.

Thanks to those days spent on Manitou Island with Tighe, Fitzgerald found himself a bit of success, but the author wasn’t done with his days in White Bear Lake and the town’s lasting influence on his work.

Fitzgerald likely saw Tighe for the last time in 1922 when he came back to White Bear Lake for the summer he spent at the yacht club with Zelda.

That summer, Fitzgerald was back at it, writing every day. He also took time to waterski on the lake and see his friend Sinclair Lewis, who was a much more popular writer than Fitzgerald at the time.

“He visited the Fitzgeralds at the White Bear Yacht Club and (Scott) complained about having to find bootleg whiskey,” said LaVigne.

That summer, Fitzgerald began drafting his third and most famous novel, “The Great Gatsby,” which — despite being set on New York’s Long Island — has some echoes of White Bear Lake. TJ Eckleburg’s “eyes of God” in “The Great Gatsby” may very well be taken from an ad published at the time in the White Bear Press for Elmer G. Wick, an optometrist in White Bear Lake.

LaVigne says the car crash in the Great Gatsby might also be taken from the many fatalities White Bear Lake experienced from automobile accidents.

“In White Bear Lake, 1922 was a devastating time

for automobile fatalities. It’s kind of hard to wrap our minds around how lethal automobiles were in the early days of the ‘20s,” said LaVigne.

Another strong echo of the town is in Fitzgerald’s short story he wrote in the summer of 1922 titled “Winter Dreams,” which makes references to “Black Bear Lake.”

During the last summer Fitzgerald saw Tighe in person, Scott and Zelda attended Tighe’s wedding festivities on Manitou Island. Tighe later influenced Fitzgerald’s daughter, Scottie, to attend Vassar College, Tighe’s alma mater.

“It was a happy time, I think,” said LaVigne of the summer of 1922.

Though Fitzgerald moved on to write in New York and Paris, becoming one of the many trans-Atlantic writers of the ‘20s and ‘30s, those summers in White Bear Lake can be seen as a launching pad for Fitzgerald’s career. His “The Great Gatsby” moved on to international acclaim.

City Engineer Mark Erichson explained that the traffic signal components will likely be installed next spring, as it typically takes about six months or so to get the materials in. However, the foundation for the traffic signal will be in place, so the traffic signal could be installed over the winter if materials arrive ahead of schedule.

• Five bids have been received for the Oneka Parkway improvement project. The low bid was submitted by North

Valley Inc. for $2,041,044 for the base bid and alternate 1 for Freedom Trail improvements. (The engineer’s estimate was $2,111,900 for the base bid and alternate 1.)

“They (the bids) are pretty favorable, considering the bid environment that we are in currently,” Erichson said. “The bidding environment right now is not great, particularly with the delivery of materials.”

He added that the project will likely begin in late July or early August.

• A feasibility study will be completed for the 2023 street improvement project in the Birch

Tree Ponds area. The project is included in the city’s streets capital improvement plan (CIP), which was approved in February 2022. The project would removal of pavement as well as repairs to curbs and catch basins on: Fountain Avenue, Foxhill Avenue, 138th Street, Freeland Avenue, Freeland Court, Geneva Avenue, 135th Street and 135th Court.

The project is estimated to cost $1,779,300.

Erichson explained that the city was starting the process a bit earlier than usual in an effort to try to give more flexibility to contractors and, in

return, receive more favorable bids. “We would like to open bids in February so they can start as soon as materials are in and they are ready,” he said.

City Administrator Bryan Bear said at a staff level, there have been some discussions on the fact that the city has received a development application to the south of the project area, and if the development moves forward, construction traffic would likely use that neighborhood for access. “It is hard to know whether a development proceeds or doesn’t proceed.

Staff is comfortable recommending this project for next year,” Bear said.

Neighbors should keep an eye out for upcoming neighborhood meetings for the proposed project.

• The council has scheduled two budget workshops.

The first one will be at 5 p.m. Monday, July 25; the other is set for 5 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 31.

The next City Council meeting will be at 7 p.m.

Monday, July 18, at City Hall.

Pedersen has been a Hugo Lion since 1975 and previously served on the city’s Parks Commission for many years. Weidt said he was instrumental in the land acquisition for Irish Avenue Park and has also been very active with Habitat for Humanity, his homeowners association, church and installing city playgrounds over the years.

“He has gone above and beyond volunteerism.

He does it very quietly, very inconspicuously, but he is there. He is there not only for our neighborhood but the entire community of Hugo.”

Weidt mentioned the council might want to reconsider the name “pavilion” in the name, because many people picture a pavilion as having no walls, whereas this new building is enclosed but the side doors can open up to give it a more open feel.

“Volunteers are what have made this park go,” he said. “A volunteer is defined ‘to give without being asked and without being paid.’ It is the ‘without being asked’ that makes people special. They look for ways to help and to make a difference in their community. If we didn’t have those people, this community would be completely different.”

Weidt explained that in addition to membership in the Lions Club, there are many other ways to volunteer within the city such as the Hugo Good Neighbors Food Shelf, churches, schools, Hugo Fire Department, Scouts, the American Legion and more.

“I think Lions Park should remain in place to honor the history of what the Lions have done there but also honor the contributions of volunteers that have been serving our community for years and years ever since it was formed way back when,” he said, adding that his recommendation was to change the name of Lions Park to Lions Volunteer Park.

Council Member Phil Klein said he agreed with that suggestion. “It takes volunteers, it takes people of the community to make the community what it is today,” he said. “Hugo is renowned for its volunteerism, but also it is a nice place to live and it’s because of the people that live here that make it a nice place to live.” He added, “It is a way to recognize volunteers who have stepped forward and gone above and beyond.”

Council Member Mike Miron said he also agreed with the name suggestion. “I think there is an opportunity for a broader vision and continued inclusion and recognition of people who serve our community. What an opportunity to potentially recognize other members of our community who also contributed to the theme and the focus of the park.”

Council Member David Strub suggested Good Neighbor Park. “The event is held there, (and) good neighbors are kind of Hugo’s trademark,” he said.

“Everything you said about volunteerism is also the good neighbor.”
