What's your favorite small town to visit?

Transport back 100 years to the early days of Bayport. A trolley car makes its way down Third Street in what used to be “South Stillwater.” The towns of, Stillwater and “South Stillwater” had a tendency to get confused with each other, so “South Stillwater” decided it was high time they changed the name. The City Council voted to change the city’s name to Bayport in 1922.

BY CORINNE STREMMEL STAFF WRITER

Restoration also requires seed drilling equipment and consistent maintenance of wildflowers and grasses as the prairie starts to grow. “It is ideal to have at least three different species of flowering native plants,” said Schneider. Pollinators rely on different plants for food. A baseline presence of three different flowering plants means that a wide number of pollinators can be accommodated in the prairie.

What is currently 10 acres of soybean fields will soon be transformed into native prairie as a part of Pine Point Park. Aesthetically, it might make sense to swap out rows of soybeans for wildflowers and tall grasses, but this project is more about biodiversity than beauty.Washington County Parks and the Washington County Conservation District received $25,000 in funding through a Conservation Partners Legacy Grant (CPL) to begin converting agricultural land into native habitat. The Pollinator Friendly Alliance also received $10,000 in funding. All three parties will continue to apply for additional funding through 2024 to complete various restoration“Biodiversityprojects.isimportant in terms of sustaining the planet now and for future generations,” said Laurie Schneider, executive director of the Pollinator Friendly Alliance. “If we don’t start protecting these areas and creating more biodiversity, we’re going to see that species will really rapidly deplete.” Maintaining a diverse number of species is essential. According to Schneider, nature has a way of keeping everything intact. If one species of plant or animal goes away, it can disrupt an entire ecosystem.Landdevelopment known as fragmentation is a common way humans can disrupt ecosystems. Fragmentation caused by highways or farmland can disrupt animals’ migration patterns. “The foundation of the problems is that people are destroying habitat and creating these developments that fragment wild areas,” said Schneider. Restoring the prairie is one way to counteract this level of human impact.

Prairie in progress: Washington County receives funding for prairie restoration

CONTRIBUTED Volunteers help plant the prairie by hand.In bloom: The Pollinator Friendly Alliance aims to have at least three different species of wildflowers in bloom during the spring and summer.

T he Pollinator Friendly Alliance keeps tabs on the number of pollinators in the prairie by individually counting each beetle, butterfly or bee within a target area among the plant life.

The most expensive and labor-intensive portion of the restoration is harvesting native plant seeds. The seeds must be harvested by hand. Harvesters must meticulously pick the small seeds off native plants.

T he alliance holds yearly pollinator counts to track the prairie’s health. Schneider has noticed an uptick in volunteers over the years as climate change has started to impact a larger number of people.“More and more people are aware of environmental issues like pollinator issues and climate crisis because it’s starting to affect everyone’s life,” said Schneider. “When individuals are affected, they start to become concerned.”

Pine Point Park began converting farmland into prairies in 2015 by taking out regular corn and soybean fields and adding a cover crop. With the help of volunteers from the Pollinator Friendly Alliance who planted wildflowers and grasses, by 2017 a native prairie was blooming in place of the farmland.PinePoint Park has already begun clearing out a 10 acres oak savanna of invasive species as another part of their restoration project. The park’s latest project to turn 10 acres of soybean fields will begin this fall as the soybeans are harvested and a cover crop is planted. Afterward, the native prairie seeds will be planted next spring.

Pollinators are essential to our survival. Over 80% of the crops we grown rely on pollinators. Prairie restoration can be a long, tedious process, but also an essential one. “The natural world is really intelligent,” said Schneider.Withhumans and nature working together, the prairie and its many ecosystems can be saved for the health of future generations.

couple weeks ago I was visiting some of my college friends in St. Peter, and like many twenty-somethings, were racking our brains for something exciting to do.

• Limited to 350 words.

One of my friends who went to see “Dr. Strange” described it as “a movie you have to see in theaters” because of the sheer wall of sound in the film.

Just as we had reached a full hour of sitting in silence and watching Bob’s Burgers, my friend suggested that we drive 10 minutes to the closest movie theater in Mankato to see Jordan Peele’s latest alien thriller, “Nope.”Aside from the fact that I would personally never opt to see a horror movie, going to see a movie struck me as a weird proposal. I hadn’t been “to the movies” in two years. It was way before the pandemic, maybe in December of 2019 that I saw the “Mr. Rogers” movie with my mom. At the time, going to the movies didn’t feel as foreign of a concept. I remember going to Cinema 8, Brookings South Dakota’s premier and only movie theater, which had recently gone through a major renovation. It was already around the time that the popularity of going to theaters was starting to decline, and theaters were looking for ways to bring in audiences. Reclined seats, temperature control, plush leather and surround sound tried to lure audiences to the big screen, but despite all the bells and whistles, I just don’t get the appeal. Why would I go out to see a movie when I can watch the same movie on Netflix in my bed wearing my sweatpants whenever I want?

Covid probably killed the traditional movie theater for me, but the ritual of going to the movies was long dead before 2020. As streaming services became a household commodity in the 2010s, going to the movies stopped making sense. A nd really, I don’t blame consumers. A single movie ticket is around the same price as one month’s subscription to Netflix. However, I don’t think that streaming is the alternative to movie-going. Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers in the last quarter, their largest loss in over ten years. As the recession drags on, people are going to find other, cheaper ways of watching content.Butlet’s go back to the great institution that movie theaters used to be. “Going to the movies” used to be an activity to fill Friday and Saturday nights. People counted going to movies as a hobby, but now seeing a movie in a theater is probably the last item on my list of fun activities. W hen we did actually go out of the house to see “Nope,” I was reminded that theaters do have some qualities you just can’t experience at home.

Moving forward on to the next chapter

A s college students we are told internships will give us real life experiences to prepare us for our future careers. As I reflect on my first internship, I can’t help but face the paralyzing anxiety that comes with the thought of myAsfuture.someone who has always had a fairly good head on my shoulders, who kept straight A’s all throughout high school and has continued to keep good grades throughout college, I often challenge myself. Why do I care so much? What is this going to get me other than a diploma that now qualifies me for 35% of America's jobs? Because I know that diploma does not guarantee happiness in my future career. It does not guarantee that I will ever find my dream job and it sure as heck does not guarantee that I know what I’m doing with my life. In all honesty, I am scared of the known burnout that most journalists experience. I am scared I will not be good enough, that I will not be successful and that I will not make enough money to provide for a family. There is no test or training that can make me any more qualified than the person next to me. These are just some of the things I am constantly wrestling with as a collegeBecausestudent.Ihave been living in my parent’s home for two months, where I resided all throughout high school, I have also come to realize I am growing up. It's a strange feeling– growing up and reflecting on the many friendships and relationships that have come and gone. In the past three years, my life has changed drastically. Sometimes I cannot begin to process it. Often, I become overwhelmed with the conflicting feeling of being stuck between two different worlds. The one I once lived in and the one I currently live in. I’m not sure if this pull back and forth is a side effect from being a part of the COVID-19 graduating class or if it’s the loss of a childhood best friend who lived in my neighborhood, or the boy who passed away in a car accident on the back roads I take to get to work everyday. Never in a million years did I think I would have so much vengeance towards my hometown and at the same time, feel this tug to come back and live it all over again. Amidst all the confusion, a huge lesson I have learned is that God isn’t continuously telling us what to do as we search for ourselves. He gently reminds us who we are. He continues to rewrite our lives in beautiful and unexpected ways, knowing the next version of us will usually be better than the previous one. As I enter my junior year at Bethel, I am filled with gratitude to know that I have a second home where I can truly discover myself, continue on my faith journey, surround myself with good company, make mistakes without facing judgment and best of all provide me the opportunity of this internship. Thank you Press Publications.

Perhaps that’s the way to resuscitate the movie theater business, by counting on big action-packed blockbusters with incredible sound editing that need to be experienced in a theater. But that’s just not my type of movie. Remember I was seeing quiet, serene “Mr. Rogers” with my mom, not the latest Marvel flick with whooshing surround sound.Andas much as it pains me to think that theaters are on the decline, I’m just not the right customer for them. However, though I’d never suggest it as an activity, if I were asked “do you want to see a movie?” I’d probably end up saying yes.

100's of reasons to celebrate: Derby Days recognizes 100 years of Bayport

Citizens of the city of Bayport will famously float hundreds of rubber ducks down Perro Creek Sept. 16 and 17 as a way to celebrate their city.

JOIN THE DUCK DERBY

BY CORINNE STREMMEL STAFF WRITER

W hile Derby Days will recognize 100 years of Bayport during the weekend events, the city celebration has its own historical roots starting with another centennial celebration.

T he Jaycees claimed to have three purposes in mind for starting Derby Days: to provide “healthful” entertainment for the children of Bayport by building new playground facilities, to give their members experience in “Jayceeism” and to celebrate the area’s 100th birthday. T he first Derby Days took place in the summer of 1956, which marked the 100th anniversary of when the first three settlements along Lake St. Croix formed the city of Baytown in 1856. It wasn’t until 1922 that those settlements would be known as Bayport.Thename “Derby Days” comes from original celebration’s series of horse shows and pony rides that took place at the Washington County fairgrounds. Though the Bayport Jaycees intended to “think big” according to a Derby Days flier from 1956, the event only took place that one year. It wasn’t until 2004 that the Derby Days we know today came to be. A small group of community members decided to resurrect the Derby Days of the 1950s and repurpose it to the modern day celebration it is today. That group would later become the Bayport Community Action League, which is now the official organizer of the event. “ It was just a group of five or six of us, just regular people,” said Mary Goullette of the Bayport Community Action League. Rubber ducks replaced horses, and Bayport added activities like fireworks, a pet parade and a dance. The Bayport Community Action League has branched out to location organizations like the Lions Club to help out. Goullette believes that Derby Days has found just the right balance of activities to get people to come out and celebrate. “ I think that's the beauty of it. We're so small that we can keep the same things going,” said Goullette. 2 022’s Derby Days is paying homage to that first Derby Days in 1956 with a cowboy-themed “Party in the Park” featuring the Tim Sigler Band on Friday. It will add a modern touch with trendy food trucks on Saturday.“We’readding more food trucks this year,” said Michele Hanson of the Afton Bayport Lakeland Lions Club. “We’ll have local folks like Candyland there along with the fireworks.”Justlikethe first celebration in 1956, Derby Days has been all about celebrating the best of the small town.Goullette describes the celebration as “the flavor of Bayport.” “It’s just put on by people who care about this city,” said Goullette. On Sept. 26, 1922, the Village Council of South Stillwater convened to change the name. T he council meeting minutes stated, “After some discussion a standing vote was again taken which resulted in a majority in favor of Bayport.” T he vote was unanimous, and South Stillwater became Bayport. “Bayport was originally part of Baytown Township, and since it’s on a river, it’s possible that's why they settled on the name Bayport,” said Peterson.Though Bayport officially decided on a name in 1922, it didn’t become an official Minnesota city until 1974. As for modern-day Bayport, there are plenty of nods to its beginnings in the logging business. According to Peterson, Andersen Windows originates from Andersen Lumbering Company, which moved from Hudson to Bayport and started its window business after pivoting from the lumbering industry. “With no more logs coming down the river, they had to do something, so they switched to windows and doors,” said Peterson. B ayport has always been a hub for manufacturing because of its proximity to the river. When the Minnesota Correctional Facility moved from Stillwater to Bayport in 1914, it provided another source of employment for Bayport. According to the 2020 census, the town has grown by 15% since 2010 and is projected to continue to grow. “It’s a great example of small-town America,” said Peterson. It’s that sense of community and history that gives Bayport its name.

BY CORINNE STREMMEL STAFF WRITER

The city of Bayport has gone through several name changes over the years, but in 1922 its Village Council decided on a final name change that has stuck for the last 100 years. B ayport began in the mid 1800s, when lumbermen started coming from New England and parts of Michigan to find new logging opportunities after depleting the tree supply in the eastern part of the country. T hree logging settlements started to form that would later become Bayport: Middletown, Bangor and Baytown. “Typically, the names of the town were taken from where the people were from, such as Bangor, Maine,” said Brent Peterson, executive director of the Washington Historical Society. It wasn’t long until the St. Croix Railway Improvement Company combined those three settlements into the village of South Stillwater in 1881. But the name “South Stillwater” didn’t stick for long. The town frequently was confused for Stillwater proper, so to differentiate the two towns the Village Council of South Stillwater decided to vote for a new name.

Joe Kunshier seconded that. “Dan is a once in a lifetime type of athlete to coach. His work ethic is unmatched, and he is a great human being above all,” said the wrestling coach. “He’s the kid who does everything right. He prepares correctly, he diets the right way and he works hard. Dan is going to be successful running cross country and track at Minnesota.”VanAcker committed to the Gophers last November and will join them Aug. 24 for a week of camp before orientation and classes. “I try to do everything for

View’s Will Skelly in the

BY BRUCE STRAND SPORTS CONTRIBUTOR

God’s glory, and I feel he’s led me to this spot,” said VanAcker, who plans to major in architecture. He was recruited by head coach Sarah Hopkins and assistant Brad Wick. He’s pleased that his roommate at the athletic dorm will be a two-time state cross country champion from Wisconsin who was also a wrestler, and, like himself, was recruited in part because of it. “The coaches like that,” he said. “They think wrestling makes you more gritty.”Onthe final day of his prep career, VanAcker won a 1600-meter thriller at St. Michael against Mounds View’s Will Skelly, who was 800 meter state champ in 2021 and had posted the state’s best 1600 time this season heading into the state meet. VanAcker had beaten Skelly by four seconds in the Suburban East cross country meet, becoming the first Ranger conference champ since 1994. He lost to Skelly in the state true-team meet 1600 race when the Mustang star took a big lead, then faded, and VanAcker closed the gap but had been too far behind. “That changed my strategy a little bit at state,” said VanAcker, determined to stay closer. He took the lead with 600 meters left. Skelly regained it with 400 left. “At 200 meters, Will looked back, and I could tell he was hurting,” said VanAcker. He slipped back ahead on the inside lane at the final turn, but was hurting plenty himself. “I was doing everything I possibly could to hold it together for that last five seconds.” He added, “My teammates joked that my form was not awesome. I had a head bob thing going.” He held on to win in 4:10.27, a personal best by 16 seconds, while Skelly set a Mustang record of 4:11.05. Skelly was so worn out by VanAcker that he buckled in the second lap of the 800 an hour later and finished ninth, after winning the prelims.VanAcker closed his wrestling career with three straight pins in the Class 3A tournament, nabbing the 152-pound championship by cradling Anoka’s Jacob Whitaker to the mat in 5:44. “I would shoot a single leg (takedown), and they would put in a whizzer, and when they relaxed their head a little too much, I would catch them in a cradle,” said VanAcker about his three pins at state (after an 8-2 firstround decision). He was 45-4 for the season and 141-43 in his career with four state trips. The two state golds were “pretty much equal” thrills, VanAcker said. Another was anchoring the Rangers 4x400 team that won the sectional and set a school record, at home, under the lights, at the Rangers new stadium. “That was one of the coolest things ever,” he said. The quartet placed fifth at state after losing one member to an injury. He had a breakout senior year. Previously, his top state finishes were sixth in wrestling and 40th in cross country as a sophomore, and 10th in the 1600 and 13th in the 3200 in track as a junior. (No state CC meet his junior year.) He holds school track records in the 800 (1:54), the 1600 (4:10.27), the 3200 (9:09), and the 4x400 (3:20), along with the cross country 5,000 meter record (15:30.7).VanAcker comes from a running family. His father, David, a pastor, ran for Michigan State. His mother, Gerri, ran in high school. Older brother Jeremiah, at Crown College in St. Bonifacius, placed second in the national meet for Christian colleges last November. There are three younger sisters. While being a star Ranger athlete, VanAcker rarely set foot inside a District 831 classroom, just for two electives in high school. A 3.93 GPA student, he was home-schooled through 10th grade, with his mother supervising, then went PSEO the last two years with classes online from Ridgewater College, earning a two-year degree in drafting. All five kids are home-schooled. VanAcker’s other interests include drafting, guitar, fishing, and especially woodworking. “My father and both grandfathers are all excellent woodworkers,” he said, “and I’ve always tagged along.” Working in the family’s shop, his favorite project is building 4 by 8 foot playhouses that he sells on Craigslist.VanAcker cheerfully relates a family story. “My mother didn’t want to run cross country,” he said, “but my grandfather bribed her with a cordless phone and contacts, and she ended up being really good.” He mentioned that anecdote because the same grandfather, along with Jeremiah, convinced him to switch to cross country. “I played football through eighth grade, and I loved football,” said Daniel, who was a running back. “I do wonder sometimes how I would have done in football.” It would be hard to top what he did as a runner and wrestler. VanAcker Mounds state 1600 meter finals in June.

Daniel VanAcker looks a lot more like a wrestler than a distance runner, thickly muscled at 5-foot-10 and 165 pounds, while rival runners tend to be long and lean. “Yeah, I know. People tell me I run like a linebacker,” chuckled VanAcker, who played football until ninth grade. The 2022 Forest Lake graduate and Minnesota Gophers recruit was outstanding in both wrestling and distance running, though, a remarkable feat, as dissimilar as they are. A s a senior, he captured state Class 3A championships in wrestling at 152 pounds and the 1600 meters in track — in an epic finale, more on that later — while also placing third in the state in cross country and fourth in the 3200. Asked about the rare combo of excelling in distance running and wrestling, VanAcker could think of only one other guy, from everyone he’s run and wrestled against, who’s similar: Christian Noble of Big Lake, who was a state wrestling champ but just a state qualifier in cross county. And we checked: none of the other 13 state Class 3A mat champs were runners. VanAcker amazed both his coaches. “To be able to combine those sports, and to do them all at such a high level, just shows how rare and special of an athlete he is,” said Andy Richardson, cross country coach. “He has the mindset that he is going to be the best, and he will do whatever it takes to accomplish that.”
