Adding structure to enhance your landscape design
Our first foray into landscaping occurred more than 30 years ago and consisted of traditional spireas, mugo pines and dogwoods, all surrounded by landscape rock. As we learned more about gardening, we wanted to make our yard stand out. After consulting with a local designer, we learned more about the concept of structure, and how adding simple objects like trellises and raised beds can add height and interest to the landscape.
Our structure journey started with a simple fence. This provided a focal point, demarcation, and a foundation to build on. Since then, we have added trellises, a garden bridge, raised planters, and an arbor. Each of these additions had a purpose, usually related to plant needs, but we also thought about how a structure could add beauty, height, or color to tie in the surrounding landscape. I am comfortable working with wood and building things; if you don’t have these skills, you can work with a landscaper (or handy friend) to create your own structures. The internet has many great resources to help you find design ideas, and some sites provide step-by-step instructions and supply lists, too. If you like the challenge of building things, here are some tools and materials that I recommend:
• A t able saw, power miter box, jigsaw and good drill are important for accurate cutting and fastening.
• Mechanical fasteners in stainless steel, if possible, work great. Adhesives tend to lose cohesion in our extreme thaw and freeze cycles.
• Brazilian Ipe wood (a renewable hardwood) is ideal for trellises and non-planter structures.
It is extremely hard and requires sharp tooling. Cedar is a less-expensive alternative, requiring staining every other year.
• Ip e oil is a commercially available finish that does an excellent job of sealing wood and protecting it from the elements.
• Professional grade treated landscape timbers work well for structures that will hold soil and water, such as raised beds.
The trellises were the simplest of our projects and took only a few hours to build, but they made the most visible impact. Providing structure for our languishing clematis allowed it to climb and spread, and we have been rewarded by an unprecedented influx of pollinators and hummingbirds. Our arbor and bridge gave us the opportunity to amend the soil and introduce additional plant species, which also benefit the pollinator ecosystem.
As our structure adventures continue, we often find new projects to enhance our landscape. Instead of staking our hydrangeas to protect them from the wind, we plan to build another fence that will offer both physical support and an aesthetic focal point.
Whether you spend just a few hours on a simple trellis, or you build multiple garden structures as we have, you’ll find that adding visual interest to your landscape can be both beneficial and beautiful.

Welcome to another edition of The Lowdown. We hope you have enjoyed the news/ magazine format with an emphasis on arts, entertainment, upcoming events and trends that affect the future of the communities served by The Lowdown. We appreciate all the feedback we have received in the nearly four years since we shifted to this format, and during the pandemic many commented that The Lowdown was a breath of fresh air compared to all the national and world news going on during these times. Our newsstands are generally emptied within a couple days of initial delivery and refilled which is a testament to the Lowdown’s popularity and the impact it has had so far.
This parallel’s community newspapers’ impact on their communities statewide and nationwide. A 2022 independent study by CODA Ventures shows what we have known all along, but many may not realize, and that is local community newspapers, not to be confused by the large dailies, are very well read. If you are a retail or service business, local community newspaper readers are among your potential customers. Did you know that 86% of Minnesota adults read local print or digital newspapers? 78% are under 65 years old. 69% are homeowners and 69% have attended or graduated from college. 72% have been community members for over 5 years, so they will be more apt to shop local. Which leads me to the next stat, 69% shop local! Newspaper readers are more active in the community, which makes The Lowdown a great read for them. Eight of every 10 newspaper readers vote! So if you are running for an office in the future, consider The Lowdown as a great way to reach an engaged and active voter. We are always looking at new features to provide as you have seen in recent months, because there is plenty to feature within the Forest Lake, Stillwater and surrounding communities. We also want to continue to offer our readers something different and a different perspective on the community, and a look at what’s ahead rather than what’s already happened. That’s why local community newspapers have always been well read and will continue to be well read – local information you can’t find anywhere else. The past nearly four years – especially the last three – have been a testament to that. Thank you again for your support. If you have feature ideas and upcoming events, please contact us at lowdownnews@presspubs.com.

Forest Lake Rotary Club to host 6th annual Turkey Trot
BY NOELLE OLSON SHOREVIEW PRESS EDITOR
If you're looking for a way to burn off some calories before your holiday meal, sign up for some exercise at the annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day.
Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. at the Forest Lake City Center. The 5K race and Mile fun run will start at 9 a.m.; the 1-mile kids/family fun run will begin at 9:15 a.m.
The cost to enter is $25 for adults ages 18 and older, and $10 for students. The event raises funds for Rangers Supporting Rangers, a nonprofit that provides food support to Forest Lake Area School district students and families with financial need.
“They have a backpack program and 70% of the proceeds will go directly to them as well as any donations from the event which people can donate on our website,” said Angela Comstock, Rotary executive secretary. “The other 30% goes to the Rotary and we use that to support our scholarship fund, grant donations and other donations to nonprofits in the area. It's all going to good places.”
New at this year's trot will be chip timing and possibly a food truck in the morning.
“In the past, we didn't time the runners officially, we would just have someone running a stop watch … we're hoping to crown a king and queen of the trot,” she said. “Most people come and do the run and get home to get ready or start cooking

Hurricane Ian: ‘We are the lucky ones’
BY SHANNON GRANHOLM MANAGING EDITOR
Hugo residents who rent or own homes in Florida find themselves picking up the pieces after Hurricane Ian and can’t help but compare the experience to what they went through when the tornado hit the city in 2008.
Former Hugo City Council Member Chuck Haas and his wife Marykay have spent their winters in Sanibel, Florida, for 10 years. For nine of those years, they rented. Last year, the two decided to purchase a home.
Before Hurricane Ian was even forecast, the two had already purchased their plane tickets for the end of October and planned to be out there through the end of April. As news of Hurricane Ian loomed, all they could do was watch the news from Hugo and hope for the best.
“It was forecasted to be a Category 3,” Chuck Haas said. “We knew we’d be on the edge of it. We weren’t really worried, but then about 48 hours before it hit, it made a right turn and went dead on into Sanibel and got up to a Category 5 hurricane,” he explained. “We had less than 24 hours to prepare, and that really wasn’t enough time for most people. It caught a lot of people by surprise.”
Right after the storm hit, some of their neighbors informed them that their neighborhood had 5 feet of water. “We knew right off that there was a lot of damage,” Haas explained.
Thanks to some satellite images from the Coast Guard and the National Weather Service, Haas said they were able to see that their house was still standing, but it wasn’t until the following week when they were really able to assess the damage. One of their sons drove from Minnesota to Florida to assess the damage and get to work.
Virtually everything that was in the lower level of their home was damaged, Haas reported, including their car, which is a total loss. All that remains of the lower level now is the studs. “It gutted the lower level completely,” he said, adding that his son’s place in Sanibel had similar damage.
“We are really fortunate. We have got people in our neighborhood … their siding is gone; their roof is gone.”
As soon as they can, Chuck and Marykay plan to return to Florida. They have rented an apartment in Fort Myers for the time being in the same complex as their son and his family.
“We are going to rent that for a couple of months until we can get into our place, and then start fixing it up,” Haas said. “We are very grateful that our damage was relatively minor. We could still live there if we had to. Our hearts go out to the people that have lost their entire home.”
There are similarities with the 2008 tornado, Haas said, noting that “It brings out the best in people.” He added that many people continue to reach out to them to offer their good wishes and support.
Hugo Lion Pete Pedersen has owned a timeshare at South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island since 1996. Typically, he spends about seven weeks there in February and March. Pedersen said he is not really certain about how their unit fared because they haven’t been able to access the resort and are relying on property management to relay information.
“They have said that they are going to give us a weekly update on what is going on as soon as they gain some understanding of what the units look like. They can’t really tell us much,” said Pedersen. “We just are not anticipating anything at least for a month, because it’s going to take a fair amount of time to rebuild.” Right before press deadline, Pedersen received communication that the resort will be closed until next September.
Pedersen still plans to visit Florida this January but has made arrangements to spend some time in another town.
Retired Hugo firefighter and current city of Hugo employee Jodie Guareschi has owned a place with her husband in Port Charlotte for about five years. Once temperatures get cold, her husband heads there, but she usually remains in Hugo to continue her role on the fire department and with the city. She does make frequent trips to visit, because much of her job can be done remotely.
The Guareschis were at their home in Port Charlotte when Hurricane Ian struck. “We were standing at the windows watching … I’ve never
seen anything like it,” Jodie recalled. “I don’t scare easily at all, I’m a firefighter, but this gave me a little bit of a pause.”
She added, “It’s an absolute travesty and there is nothing you can do. You have to stay there and just watch everything. You start to think, ‘Oh my gosh, we should have done this’… but it’s too late.”
Part of their home’s roof was damaged as was their lanai. In addition, their boat fell off the lift and went into the water. Despite the damage, she says they are “one of the lucky ones.”
The damage was erratic, similar to that caused by the Hugo tornado, Guareschi said — some houses were completely destroyed, while others fared okay.
“The tornado was a terrible, terrible tragedy, but there were many young families who could get up, shake it off and start again. But when you are 75 years old, it’s terrifying to start over…” Guareschi explained. “They have worked all their lives for this. They have raised their families; they have saved their dollars; and they are standing there among this rubble of dreams, and it’s gone.”
After election season, Guareschi plans to join her husband again in Port Charlotte to escape the cold temperatures and continue to pick up the pieces the storm left behind.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS
Free bus loop service starts Nov. 7
A local transportation option will be offered with no fare beginning the first Monday in November. The Community Thread Connector Loop is a fixed-route bus service in Stillwater and Oak Park Heights that operates every Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., making five loops. Riders may get on and off at any of the stops, and riders of all ages and income levels are welcome. Because of the impacts of inflation and other economic pressures, the bus loop will be free to riders.
According to Sally Anderson, Community Thread’s executive director, the advisory committee overseeing the service recommended eliminating the fare.
“We recognize that costs are going up for so many essential needs, and we don’t want the fare to be a barrier to using the service,” Anderson said. “Besides shopping, riders should view the service as a way to get out in the community and connect with others. The fare they used to spend on the bus can go toward meeting a friend for a cup of coffee.”
The bus picks up riders at six senior housing facilities and travels an established route that was determined after potential riders were surveyed about their needs. Customized, on-demand stops are
available by request. Riders who live within two blocks of the bus route may request to be picked up at their home by calling 651-789-6221 the Friday before the Monday they wish to ride.
The service is made possible by the Hugh J. Andersen Foundation, Lakeview Hospital, Rotary Club of Stillwater, city of Stillwater, city of Oak Park Heights, and the Stillwater Lions Club. For over 55 years, Community Thread has connected people, neighborhood, and lives together to strengthen the community. To learn more and see the bus schedule, visit www.CommunityThreadMN.org, or call 651-4397434 to get a schedule.
Soup’s on: Bayport’s Harvest Fest returns Nov. 19
If you’ve lived in the St. Croix Valley for any length of time, you’ll know there are many area traditions that are integral to the vibrant way of life in the valley. One of these is the annual Harvest Fest at People’s Church in Bayport, a fall tradition for over 20 years and an event neighbors in surrounding communities look forward to every year. The soup and bread lunch, baked goods and craft sale have provided
the opportunity for friends to gather for food and conversation.
Harvest Fest has grown over the years. After a hiatus, the event is returning. Guests will once again find the all-you-can-eat soup and bread lunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as well as beautifully decorated Christmas wreaths and porch pots, a raffle, an auction, artisan exhibitors (including several of the artisans from the first annual May Festival) and a bake sale. New this year is an all-you-can-eat chili and cornbread supper from 3 to 5 p.m. Also, local musicians will perform during the festival.
As we all know, there are many ways to spend an hour or two on a busy weekend day. However, there are very few opportunities that encourage families and friends to enjoy one another’s company, have great food at a very reasonable price, and begin some holiday shopping with local items, truly wonderful wreaths and home-baked treats — all in one place. Happy hour and more on the menu at Devil's Advocate
BY NOELLE OLSON SHOREVIEW PRESS EDITOR
“The devil's in the details,” said Devil's Advocate owner Erik Forsberg. The Devil's Advocate restaurant is located at 14200 60th St. N. in Stillwater. Forsberg said from its inception, the idea is the name and the brand.
“Our saying is, 'Challenge what you think you know.' It's an argumentative term, and one that means to shake up what's normal,” Forsberg said. “Whether it's pizzas, pastas, meatballs or whatever, we always try and take a different twist and present something in a less familiar form. We try and keep it as fresh as possible.”
Beginning Nov. 1, happy hour at Devil's Advocate will be from 3 to 6 p.m.
“We're extending it for the guests because we have a lot of people wanting it because they're coming after work and getting done later than they thought,” Forsberg said.
Carissa Asleson, director of operations, said the restaurant has a lot of happy hour regulars. The happy hour appetizer menu offers 6-inch single topping pizzas for $5.
“They are a lot of people's favorites,” Asleson said. “We are rotating $5 apps (appetizers) with five items. Right now, we are doing Parmesan breadsticks, truffle fries, a melon goat cheese bruschetta, and a chicken caesar wrap, in addition to the 6-inch
pizzas, which are always on the menu.”
Happy hour also includes a variety of $4 drinks on the bar menu including house taps, house wines and premium rail drinks.
Devil's Advocate, which has another location in Minneapolis, opened in Stillwater last winter.
“We really came out of the chute pretty quick, and the support we got from the community was immediate and very well received,” Forsberg said. “It has been incredibly welcoming. I think we bring something different, and the community can embrace it.”
Healthy alternative foods are also on the menu at Devil's Advocate.
“We do salads differently than anybody,” Asleson said. “We expect you to be going home full and even taking home leftovers from a salad, which is something you don't find very often.”
Asleson said one of the most popular salads at Devil's Advocate has a 10-oz. steak on top.
“You're hard-pressed to find someone finish it,” Asleson said. “We offer grain bowls which have barley, seeds and cheese. We really try and make it something for people with specific diets like Keto diets.”
Forsberg is a partner in the Naked Beef Company in Grantsburg, Wisconsin.
“We have our own processing facilities and our own cattle,” Forsberg said. “We started putting steaks on the menu, and they were immediately our No. one sellers. They are non-GMO grass-fed beef.”
Devil's Advocate has a monthly menu, and there are seasonal rotations in each category. “We try and keep the menu fresh,” Forsberg said.
In November, the
restaurant is adding New York strip steaks to its sandwiches and salads. “In addition, we are going to be adding some fish alternatives like salmon and fig salad,” Forsberg said.
Forsberg said he has partnerships with pork producers from Iowa.
“We're hoping to build a pork program into the entree piece as well,” Forsberg said. “If it's not done in November, it will definitely be done before Christmas for our December menu.”
The restaurant offers a brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. It also has e-tabs and pull tabs. “Picture-framed TVs are in the restaurant, including a 70-inch TV that can be turned into a computer monitor as well,” Forsberg said.
A cafe and marketplace are part of
the restaurant. Forsberg said it was built for takeout and delivery and has its own mini-kitchen, which can be used for a sandwich shop.
Forsberg's vision for the restaurant is to expand this spring and summer.
“We see long-term potential in other areas for the Devil’s Advocate,” he said. “We have a huge parking lot and will have a full event calendar for spring or summer that will include outdoor entertainment, car shows, local craft markets and Octoberfest next year, which is something to look forward to.”

Luna is a French Mastiff, and has a gentle demeanor.
Trapper, a Labrador retriever, helps with guard duties around the home.
Harrison is a Chihuahua the couple rescued. Despite his diminutive size, he thinks of himself as the top dog. ATHLETES OF THE MONTH
ELLIE HANOWSKI
SYDNEY DETTMAN
Forest Lake Girl’s Cross Country Stillwater Girl’s Swimming
Ellie Hanowski, Forest Lake cross country captain, is running strong in her sixth varsity season. Hanowski placed seventh in a season-best 19:05 at the Suburban East Conference meet on Oct. 18, helping the Rangers place second. She was third at the Blaine Invitational (where the Rangers placed first),10th at Anoka’s Steve Hoag Invitational, and 66th of 476 in a strong multistate field at the U of M’s Griak Invitational. As a junior, Hanowski was sixth in the conference and 30th in the state CC meet, then took sixth in the 800 meters in track. “Ellie is a hard worker and a tough runner. She’s battled injuries and still managed to run fast times and remain competitive,” said Erin Kvam, assistant coach. “She’s a positive leader for the younger girls.”
LEYTON PATZER
Forest Lake Football
Leyton Patzer is an igniter for the Forest Lake football team that had a 6-2 regular season. Through seven games, the 5-foot-8, 173-pound junior running back carried the ball 118 times, gaining 885 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns, and caught seven passes for 90 yards. One highlight was a 60-yard TD with 2:30 left to beat Mounds View 14-7. “Tremendous person, player and leader,” said Brad Beeskow, Rangers coach. “He is the first one in the weight room and the last one to leave, never misses a day.” Patzer is a high-energy, self-motivating player who runs the ball with speed, power and excellent field vision, the coach said.
Sydney Dettman is one of the pillars for the alwaysstrong Stillwater swimming program. In the recent section true-team, Dettman won the 200 freestyle in 1:54.30 and 100 butterfly in 58.59 while anchoring the 200 freestyle relay win, helping the Ponies capture the team title as usual. Another highlight for the 5-foot-7 senior was winning the 200 freestyle in 1:53.95 at the U of M’s Maroon and Gold meet while placing fourth in the 500 free in 5:20.99. At state last year, she placed third in the 200 free with 1:51.51. “Sydney has been an excellent swimmer and leader for six years,” coach Brian Luke said. “She is a joy to coach.” Dettman has committed to college swimming at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania.

He’s almost impossible to sack, netting 195 yards in 53 keepers with four touchdowns. He threw for 1,339 yards and eight TD’s as a junior. “The best thing about Max is you only have to tell him something once. He learns and apples right away,” coach Beau LeBore said. “He’s used to having the ball in his hands as a quarterback, point guard and cacher. His numbers speak for themselves.”
