Donna Tatting always carries her phone, and answers every question she is asked, whether in person, through email or even on vacation.

“I was one time standing in the desert of New Mexico and I answered my phone to take a question,” she said. While she isn’t always able to respond immediately, she said that she gets around to every question as soon as she can.

A Chisago County Extension Master Gardener, Tatting is the personality behind the “Ask Donna” hotline, of-

fered by Forest Lake Floral and Garden Center. A Forest Lake resident for 25 years, her line is open 24/7 to answer any gardening questions from Forest Lake or the wider Minnesota community. She posts the answers to common questions on the Forest Lake Floral Facebook page.

The idea for “Ask Donna” originally came from store owner Corey Roberts, who saw the blossoming of social media as an opportunity to engage with community gardeners in a new way.

“Knowing Donna for a lot of years, we knew the need was out there for her knowledge. The direct contact is

something that customers really seem to enjoy. It’s free, and it’s unlimited.”

Sometimes her over-the-phone consultations develop into more firsthand situations. She said she was once trying to explain how to repot an amaryllis, but found it difficult to execute over the phone.

“I told her, bring it in and I’ll repot it for you,” Tatting said. “It took me three minutes, and she walked out with a potted plant, and she’ll know how to do it from now on.”

While Tatting said that most of her calls come from people over the age of 50, Roberts added that there are many queries from a younger crowd who may

be gardening for the first time.

“New homeowners didn’t grow up with Mom and Dad’s garden, and they’re really looking for guidance,” he said.

Tatting said that it’s often the case that new homeowners hire professionals to come in and do landscaping to make their yards visually appealing, but afterward they struggle with caring for the plants because they don’t know the species and the care requirements needed to maintain them.

“I have a few customers that call me so often that I am in their life now,” Tatting said.

Investment advisor indicted for stealing more than $2.5M U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger today announced the indictment of Levi David Lindemann of Stillwater for stealing more than $2.5 million from investment advisory clients. Lindemann is charged with mail fraud and money laundering.

According to the indictment and documents filed in court, between 2009 and 2014, Lindemann owned and operated Gershwin Financial, Inc., an investment management company that did business under the name Alternative

Through AWS, Lindemann provided financial planning and asset management services, and sold insurance annuities and investment products to clients in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

According to the indictment and documents filed in court, Lindemann used AWS to solicit approximately $4.3 million in investor funds from approximately 50 investor clients. Lindemann encouraged his clients to surrender to him their retirement accounts so that he could invest funds on their behalf. Lindemann induced clients to entrust him with their money by falsely representing that he would use the invested funds to buy secured notes or other legitimate investment vehicles. Instead of investing their money into legitimate investment vehicles, Lindemann used the invested funds to pay personal expenses, convert the investments to cash for his own use, purchasing at least one vehicle and to make Ponzi-type payments of promised

returns to other investors.

According to the indictment and documents filed in court, Lindemann took steps to conceal his fraudulent activity and lull investor-clients by creating counterfeit secured notes and providing them to investor-clients as proof of their investment. Lindemann also used some of the investment funds that he stole to make monthly payments to investor-clients, which were intended to appear to be monthly interest payments accruing from legitimate investments.

This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the Minnesota Department of Commerce Fraud Bureau, Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson.

Stillwater artist creates awareness, leadership through community art

When Jimmy Longoria received $30,000 to create a colorful new mural for the Bush Foundation, he knew it had to bring his message to as many people as possible.

So naturally, he put in the most high-traffic area in the building—the bathroom.

Although his latest big project was installed at the Bush Foundation building in St. Paul in spring 2015, Oak Park Heights-based Longoria is still working with the theme to bring awareness to cultural and racial disparity in Minnesota.

The Bush Foundation is a St. Paulbased nonprofit that awards grants to community initiatives, particularly ones that focus on native nations and education. Longoria received a fellowship from the Foundation in 2010 and credits it with helping to bring him to prominence as an artist. When the foundation approached him about commissioning an art piece for its office building, it suggested a theme related to American Indians of the Upper Midwest—a group that the foundation tries particularly hard to represent. “I got a $30,000 commission from the Bush Foundation to put art into their offices. My response was laughter—I’m a muralist! None of my pieces fit in galleries or locations like offices, “ Longoria said.

When employees brought him to the site, they showed him a wall in a break room they had in mind. However, Longoria noticed that people seemed to visit the nearby restroom more frequently than anyplace else, and instead opted to create an original art piece for that location.

When Longoria began on the project, he was working in a 12x12 room in the basement of his mother-in-law’s house in the Boutwell retirement community in Oak Park Heights. It had no windows, and the space was extremely restricted for such a large painting. But Longoria said that working in this tight space gave him a better idea of how the finished piece would be viewed in the close confines of an office bathroom. “Artistically, it’s a huge challenge,� he said. As one of the most prominent Chicano artists in Minnesota, Longoria has racked up an impressive list of artistic achievements, including a permanent display in the National Museum of Mexican Art, a Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. “Living the Dream� award and a Sally Award from the Ordway, among others.

Longoria said that the inspiration for his theme, “Native Boy Lost,� was inspired by volunteer work he had done at the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center. A disproportionately large number of detainees are from American Indian communities. Longoria observed that many of them are far from home and end up in the detention system by default,

creating a large community of young, rootless American Indians with few opportunities. “Native kids that leave the reservation for whatever reason jump on a bus—and the buses come to the Twin Cities,� he said. Longoria said that cultural differences between tribes can sometimes cause conflict, but he noticed one unifying symbol throughout these cultures— the medicine wheel. While the wheel has different meanings across different tribes, most American Indians recognize it as a symbol of spiritual guidance. “Even though they are incompatible cultures, they all have in common this allegiance to the medicine wheel,� Longoria said. The symbol—represented as a circle divided into four quadrants of different colors—is repeated throughout his painting, as are images of Native faces that seem to stare at the viewer.

After Longoria’s proposal was approved for the men’s bathroom, the foundation asked him to create a piece for the women’s bathroom as well, which Longoria called “Native Girl Lost.� “The message to the people working in those offices is, ‘don’t forget the bus Indians’—all these kids running away from their tribes,� he said. “They are targeted for heroin, and it’s another door for human trafficking.�

The application of the painting, which used a new process developed by Bam Bam GRAPHix in Hopkins, did not require traditional installation. The painting was digitized, reproduced and printing directly onto the flexible adhesive, which is removable. “They asked me, ‘Why aren’t you painting on the wall?’ Well, the Bush Foundation relocates every six years or so. You’d lose the art piece,� Longoria said.

Longoria’s artwork is among the first to appear in its adhesive wallpaper-like form, which is similar to a wall-sized sticker that can stretch and withstand wear and tear. This process also made it easier for the painting to be fitted around irregularities on the surface, such as wall lights. “They budgeted three days of work to install this piece,� Longoria said. “It was done in three hours.�

The adhesive process through Bam Bam Graphix is an effort to make community art more accessible. ‘If you’re a nonprofit, it makes no sense to put $10,000 on the wall,� Longoria said. “The Bush Foundation now owns my paintings, but they’re stored

by Museum Services to eventually put on display. What this process does is absorb the cost of the original—what they pay for is duplication and material.

“The singer who killed a bear:” Q&A with Cindy Jo Schloer Cindy Jo Schloer entertained an audience of thousands on “American Idol” last year, where she was easily recognizable by her distinctive headband and “outdoor girl” vibe. Since returning to North Branch, she has been playing venues across the Midwest with her band Dirt Road Dixie.

Where are you from, how old are you, and where do you live now?

I was born and raised in North Branch, Minnesota, and just bought a home with my fiancé in North Branch.

It’s my forever home … until I get that recording contract and go on tour (fingers crossed).

How and when did you get started as a musician?

I grew up singing in church. My mom and brother were singers growing up … so it runs in the family. I’ve been playing in a band for about three years now and in my one band Dirt Road Dixie for the past year.

Are you self-taught, or do you have formal training in music? If so, when and where?

I was part of a traveling choir in high school called Harmonaires, which my mom and brother were also part of. We received free vocal lessons throughout the year in school. Also just watching and listening to my mom and brother taught me a lot.

Do you also play instruments, or are you mainly a vocalist?

I play acoustic guitar and write my own songs with it. Hoping to release more originals this year!

When did you first audition for American Idol, and when did you return home?

I auditioned at the cattle call in June and then made it through all the call back rounds. I flew out to LA in October for just over a week and flew home on Halloween. The show aired in January.

What was the strangest/weirdest/most incredible thing about being on American Idol? Who was the most interesting person you met?

The craziest part was singing in the Orpheum: IT’S AMAZING and with the history and people who have performed there, it is incredible to be able to sing on that stage. Coolest people ... well, Keith [Urban] is amazing. He’s what EVERY artist should be: sweet, humble, smart, caring. He doesn’t act like a celebrity. Also just other contestants who just supported each other. I’ve kept in touch with a few.

Was it a big adjustment?

It was. I’ve never really left home or

gone on a vacation alone. I bawled when I left. Then when I came home I’d be at a random place and people would recognize me.

When was Dirt Road Dixie formed, how many people and who are in it (and what do they each play?)

Dirt Road Dixie was formed as soon as I came home. I was ready to do it.

There are four of us: Andre DeSautel from North Dakota playing lead guitar, Corey Yoder, who studied music in Memphis on drums, and Trey Gust from Elk River on bass. All of us sing.

What is it about your music to which people seem to respond?

I’m a spitfire on stage … I love performing and I feel people notice that at every show. Nothing keeps me off stage.

I’ve sung with the flu, a broken foot … you name it.

What is the most rewarding part about making music?

The feeling of knowing I’m making people proud and inspiring people to try … to just go for it.

What is the most challenging part?

Booking shows. Venues can only pay so much, and it’s competitive: bands all want a gig. We’ve been blessed to stay busy.

Do you have a “claim to fame” as a band/ musician?

I’m always called the American Idol girl who shot a bear. Other then that, everyone always says “How does that big voice come outta a little thing like you?”

What else do you do in your spare time?

Do you have a family, and what are their names and ages?

I come from a family of six. Mom Cindra, Dad Mark, two older brothers Kaleb and Travis, seven nieces and nephews, and an amazing fiancé that I’ll be marrying Jan. 16. So I’ll gain a sister, a niece and two amazing in-laws.

What is in the five-year plan for you (and the band) as an musician?

We would love to be on tour, but that’s all in the hands of the Lord and the people booking us supporting us and coming to see us. All in all we just want to be entertaining crowds and go where our dream takes us.

Do you have a favorite song to perform, (or a least favorite) and why?

My most favorite are “Amazing Grace” and the national anthem. They show great vocal range and are both such meaningful and beautiful songs.

Obama’s Chief of Staff, Stillwater native hears concerns from Iron Range

A Stillwater native, McDonough visited Mesabi Range College in Virginia, Minnesota. When he arrived in his home state, he met with several prominent Minnesota politicians, including Gov. Mark Dayton, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, and Sen. Al Franken.

The Iron Range has experienced a massive wave of layoffs in 2015, with nearly 2,000 jobs lost. Many believe that illegally imported steel is to blame.

In the past few months, economists and industry leaders have pointed out the problem of steel “dumping” from foreign nations, particularly China. “Dumping” is when goods are sold in a foreign market for a lower price than the cost of production, a trick which foreign companies are able to pull off because they do not require the same level of profits as U.S. companies. As a result, U.S. companies purchase this cheaper foreign steel, which keeps costs in the most competitive steel-driven markets — such as the auto industry — at an unat-

tainable low for American-produced products.

Minnesota steel workers and officials are pushing for stiffer tariffs to regulate steel dumping, but this is a complicated request. McDonough spent two hours meeting privately with locals who had been affected by the layoffs. He was not able to promise any government action, but he will convey the locals’ concerns to the White House when he returns to Washington, D.C.

Polaroid is back uring the Christmas season, we have a giant red mailbox outside the front door of our office, so that kids can stop by to mail a letter to Santa. Before we send the letters on to the North Pole, our staff gets a chance to review them before we publish them in the paper. It is always fun to see what the hot gift items are each year.

I was surprised by the re-emergence of the Polaroid camera. The old instant-develop fi lm camera that was popular in the 1970’s and 80’seemed to be this year’s hot gift item. My 11 year-old daughter received one from her grandparents, as did many of her friends. They come in fun colors and produce an photo that is smaller than Publisher’s instant the old Polaroid photos I remember. The photo quality itself looks View ‘vintage’. In the digital world we Carter Johnson live in, I wouldn’t have imagined this would be the must-have gift. I think it’s great that all these kids who have access to phones or tablets that produce high quality digital photos one after another, with the ability to delete the ones they don’t like, can appreciate the simplicity of a point and shoot camera. It was fun to watch my daughter and her friends set up their limited shots, and then when the print popped out of the camera, vigorously shake it so that it would develop faster (which it doesn’t, but we all have done that with a Polaroid photo). The down side, of course, is if you mess up the shot you can’t go back and erase it. You’re stuck with the picture you took, whether it’s overexposed, heads are cut off or everyone’s eyes are closed. With fi lm at around $1 per photo, you have to choose your shot carefully. My guess is that the comeback of the Polaroid will be short-lived, but it’s fun to watch these kids embrace the ‘new’ old technology and get a taste for the art of photography.

Summer road trip With fuel prices dropping, families have a few extra bucks in their pocket. If a family fills two vehicles a week, they are now saving $10-20 per fill up over a few years ago, amounting to a savings of $80-$160 per month. Since 1999, fuel prices climbed from $1.17 to an average high of $3.64 in 2012, according to www.energy.gov. AAA reported 2015 ended with fuel prices around $2 per gallon, and predicts low fuel prices for 2016, as well. Now is a good time to plan your summer road trip. What you save in fuel costs can help offset lodging or other fun activities on your dream vacation.

Loyalty Cards I admit I’m the type of person who likes to get a good deal. It’s exciting to find a bargain, and even better to get something for free - a free meal, free upgrade, free bottle of water or a discount for products or services. I therefore sign up for every loyalty or rewards program I hear about. My growing stack of loyalty cards is over 3 inches tall, but my anxiety about it may be growing faster than my rewards. I recently sifted through the stack, throwing out those for shops that went out of business or those that no longer accept the cards. I have rewards cards for hardware stores, drug stores, pizza places, fast food chains, coffee shops, oil changes, car washes, and movie theatres, as well as credit card rewards programs. Some programs are better than others. While I like the deals, it’s hard to keep track of all the requirements and expiration dates, and to manage all of the little cards. Lately is seems like some loyalty programs are just not worth it. And if it has a password is involved, forget it. The last time I pulled up to get fuel I scanned my card only to find my points expired and I threw the card in the trash, annoyed. It’s worse when I purchase something and forget the card, forgoing my punch towards a free product. Rewards programs are hit or miss. Participate in only the best ones and don’t let it stress you out.

Salting the Earth hen the City of Carthage fell at the end of the Third Punic War, 146 BC, victorious Romans pulled Phoenician ships out of the harbor and set them on fire before moving through the city, house to house, rounding up and selling 50,000 people into slavery.

Then they set the city on fire. As a final insult before they left, it is said that the Roman soldiers sprinkled salt upon the ground to ensure that nothing Movers and could ever grow there again.

Shakers During the 17th and 18th centuries, Angie Hong Spain and Portugal punished traitors within their empires by executing them and then pouring salt on their land. Closer to home, some say that Union soldiers salted the fields in Georgia during General Sherman’s infamous March to the Sea (though it’s not likely they used very much, since salt was a hot commodity during the American Civil War).

Throughout history, pouring salt on the land has symbolized a curse not only for current inhabitants, but also for future generations.

Then, during the winter of 1941-42, New Hampshire became the first state to apply salt to roads to help melt snow and ice more quickly. The U.S. used a total of 5000 pounds of road salt that year. After

World War II, road salt became more and more common. One million tons of salt were used in 1955, and 10 million in 1972. In 2013, local, state and federal highway departments applied 17 million tons of salt to roads across the nation.

Whose future do we seek to curse?

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency reports that roughly 40 of our metro area lakes and streams have already been contaminated by too much salt. Another 40 lakes and 41 streams are near the threshold and will become impaired if they get any saltier.

Even the groundwater we drink is at risk, and 30 percent of private wells in the metro are already considered impaired by too much chloride.

Though the Roman and Union soldiers’ salting of the earth may have been mostly symbolic, our modern communities face the very real risk of suffering unintended consequences from using road salt, year after year. There is currently no practical technology for removing salt from our surface and groundwater resources and soil once it is there, so the only solution is to use less salt and hope that it doesn’t build up too quickly.

We all value our safety when driving in winter weather, but clean water and healthy soils are vital to our long-term survival as well. Here are three ideas from the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area Chloride Management Plan for how each of us can help: 1) Support local and state road

maintenance crews, as well as businesses and other large parking lot owners, in their efforts to reduce salt use. Drive slower and wear appropriate shoes when it’s snowy and icy outside.

2) Use less salt on your own driveway and sidewalk. Four pounds of salt (4 12-oz cups full) is enough to clear 1000 sq. feet of pavement. Shovel early to avoid the need for salt and remember that salt doesn’t work when the pavement is colder than 15°.

3) Stop using your water softener if your water hardness is less than 120 mg/L CaCO3. If you do need a water softener, switch from a timer-based to a demand-based system and install a bypass for your outside spigot so that you aren’t softening water for irrigation.

The Kabekonian – Stillwater High School’s annual annual The Stillwater Area High School Class of 2016 is gearing up for the final few months of high school life. The Stillwater High School had no yearbook, also called an “annual,” before 1916. It was that class that took on the task to publish the very first one.

There was no funding available for the enterprise and all monies had to be raised with only sales of the book – no advertising was allowed that first year.

There was a misunderstanding within the school at the beginning of the process that the “Senior Annual” would only be for the senior class. This was addressed in the Stillwater Messenger newspaper by stating that “it is not essentially a senior annual. It will contain material of interest to every student; for instance; pictures of the classes, athletic teams and other organizations.” There was also a section about alumni of the Stillwater High School to that point.

Soon the local newspapers were talking about the “contest” between the boys and the girls of the senior class on which could pre-sell the most books.

The goal was to sell 350 annuals but in the end the total was over 420. Who won the contest was never reported.

The financing was secured, then the photos of each of the senior class was taken by local photographer Louis Kuhn. There were other photographs in the book as well. “George Muller our

‘Annual’ photographer, is busy with his camera,” according to the Stillwater Messenger. “Taking pictures of the different classes and organizations in the School. Ruther Schuttinger is also taking pictures of various groups of students. All of these pictures will be found in the Annual.”

This “Annual” needed a name. It is not clear who came up with the name but the first time it appears in the newspaper is in March 1916. The name, Kabekonian, according to the Stillwater Area High School website “is an Ojibwe word that translates to "the end of the trail." There is a legend in Ojibwe that tells about how the Ojibwe came to be in this area and that they decided the end of the line would be "by the still waters."”

Expectations were high on this endeavor by the Senior Class. The delivery of the Kabekonian was May 25th and was distributed from the Stillwater Gazette office. The Gazette addressed the new book, “To the Senior Class of the high school must be given credit for preparing this, the first annual ever

gotten out by a student body in Stillwater, and one that is a credit not only to the class, but to the city of Stillwater, as well.”

The first student editor was Philip Carlson and the first annual was dedicated to Susan Hohmann, Principal of the High School, for “her untiring efforts made this, the first Annual of the Stillwater High School, a possibility and a success.”

The staff of the first Kabekonian put an editorial in the back of the book that challenged future classes: “Now that the class of 1916 has undertaken the difficulties of pioneer work, we sincere-

ly hope that the work of publishing an Annual will be kept up by other classes in this school and we wish success to the class which takes it up next. As Alumni we will surely give future Annuals our heartiest support.”

It is now the challenge of the class of 2016 to produce an “annual” as well received as the one published one hundred years ago. Although the technology and photography are better, the Kabekonian is in color, it is the heart and soul of the writing and of the staff that makes each yearbook special.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR In mid-December the Stillwater superintendent and administration proposed the BOLD initiative, a plan to close Withrow, Marine, and Oak Park Elementary schools, under the guise of fiscal efficiency and higher educational quality and equity.

Proposed benefits of the BOLD initiative include: • Equitable learning experiences • Improved access to support services • Balanced class sizes across the district • Long-term stability for staffing (“BOLD FAQs,” 2015).

Superficially, the benefits of BOLD seem worthy of “right sizing” our schools; however, national evidence-based studies have consistently shown that the negative effects of consolidation far outweigh the good.

“Right-sizing” effects include: • Increases class sizes and student/teacher ratios • Decreases academic performance • Reduces rates of student participation in extracurricular activities • Lowers graduation rates • Decreases teacher performance • Is associated with more dangerous school environments (Howley, Johnson, & Petrie, 2011).

Consolidation will displace over 800 students.

These students will then be redistributed between Stonebridge, Rutherford, and Lily Lake, an average of 265 student/school. To accommodate the influx of students BOLD proposes to redraw the district boundaries. This will shift centrally located students to the southern schools because it is nonsensical to bus students from Marine to Afton-Lakeland.

Appropriate and effective size is 300-400 students for

an elementary school (Cotton, 1996). Consolidation will result in schools with enrollment rates above 600 students.

Larger schools (400+) are associated with: • Increased dropout rates • Increased violence • Decreased sense of connectedness and safety • Lower teacher satisfaction and higher teacher turnover • Lower achievement in college • Less happiness (Grauer, 2011).

A common myth is that large schools provide an economy of scale. However, there is little evidence they actually cost less. The relationship between consolidation and economies of scale is not supported by the literature.

What the research says: • A review of 40 consolidated schools showed very little reduction of per-pupil costs, if any at all (Valencia, 1984).

• Data from 50 states found that student enrollment and per-pupil costs were not statistically related, suggesting that there are no economies of scale (Jewell, 1989) • Analysis of 19 districts with school consolidations found no statistically significant reductions in total cost per pupil “…there appears to be no overall basis for expecting that significant financial advantage or increased revenue are necessary outcomes of consolidation” (Streifel et al., 1991).

• Consolidation of 325 schools resulted in an increased number of central office administrators and transportation costs per pupil that more than doubled despite a decrease in total students (Erye and Finn, 2003).

“Right sizing” imposes fiscal hardships, increased costs and reduced revenues associated with consolidation include: • Moving personnel from salary schedules of smaller schools and districts to higher salary schedules of larger schools and districts • Increased bargaining power of teachers • More specialized staff • Higher costs of having to transport students longer distances • Higher rates of vandalism • Lower support for bond levies • Need for new and larger facilities (Sher and Tompkins 1977) Voting no to BOLD benefits both our children community. Economic and fiscal capacity of communities with schools are much larger than those without.

1990-2000, 60% of communities with schools saw population growth; while only 46% of those without schools grew.

Housing values are 25% higher in communities with schools then those without.

Communities with schools had high per capita incomes, equal distribution of income, less per capita income from public assistance, less poverty and less child poverty (Lyson, 2002).

The negative ramifications of closing Withrow, Marine, and Oak Park are far reaching and affect both the sustainability of Stillwater communities and all students in the district. Please visit stopboldcold.org and help support of schools.

Trudging through the Hawaiian paradise

I parked on an oak knoll, let my dog Zipper out, and walked out on the dirt road firmed by the freezing but seasonably warm weather. No snow, but the ponds were ice.

The day was Dec. 21, 2015 and I’d decided I would take a solstice Woods hike along Wyoming Road through the wet- and Water lands of Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Notebook Area, 23,000 acres Jim of earth-toned and watery beauty. No one in Mortwedt sight for the next two hours.

The dirt road leads to Wyoming— the town—passing through a flatness achieved by fen, marsh and sedge meadow. I know a solstice is supposed to evoke sober thoughts like life and death, evil and good, and especially light and darkness. So I suppress good cheer to briefly indulge in that. After all, the shortest day of the year ought to be the stuff of meditation, right?

Nope. I yielded back to good cheer and let out a yell, which I sometimes do when let outdoors! The yell as it turned out was a kind of a cheer for God. What with the solstice and matters celestial, the first thought that came to mind was the Big Bang, that instant when creation happened and the universe exploded into its earliest being from which it has been unfolding from ever since. Science can’t explain it, and even the agnostics and atheists among the scientists concede that the Big Bang is a supernatural, one-off event.

Unlike the Big Bang, I feel like I’m on more solid ground, so to speak, when thinking about wetlands. I wondered about old Carlos Avery, the wildlife and game commissioner they had named the place for back in 1936 when the state of Minnesota bought the land cheap off the tax rolls. My guess is Avery was a good New Dealer or Farmer-Labor Party backer and probably did little to hide that in the columns of the newspaper he edited way back when he lived in Hutchinson.

Before the land was bought by the state it had been the property of a twine company, turned rug and wicker furniture company, that in 1903 had been St. Paul’s largest manufacturer.

That was the Crex Rug Company, which in 1908 boasted a payroll of 900.

The folks in these parts cut, dried and baled wire grass, the raw material of 400 products, before sending the big bales down to the factory just off Como Avenue in St. Paul. It must have been

nasty work. They’d start the season in late summer when insect populations were high, and they worked out of camps seven days a week, 10 hours a day, for I don’t know how many weeks.

Chances are they did not show up some months later for a solstice hike saying nice things like “earth-toned and watery beauty.” But people of that time had fewer options.

What they baled, wove and dyed into pleasant-smelling carpet is still relevant and alive today. Wire grass is a sedge. It’s Latin and taxonomic name is Carex stricta. You can see the name “Crex” is a small contraction of Carex, a genus of 2,000 different species of sedges. You can often tell a sedge by its shoot, which is triangular in cross section. It doesn’t roll well between your hands. The wiregrass or rug company, unlike some firms that harvest natural resources, left the area by 1931 without much damage done, when Japanese competition proved too much.

Back to the hike. So with no real objective, I’m on foot with my dog headed for the dirt road T-intersection of Wyoming Road and Pool 10 Road about a half mile ahead. There are “No Trespassing” signs along the way posted by the DNR, but I want to walk into the sanctuary a short distance.

My first boot step off the road breaks through ice covered by still-standing sedge. I withdraw that boot the moment after I feel a film of cold water soaking my wool sock. “Oh well, not a bad soaking,” I think, my dog staring at me from dry ground.

Wetlands are critical reservoirs that mete out filtered water and provide precious habitat. They teem with life.

No agricultural land comes close. At Carlos Avery you can see, in season, northern shrikes, owls, sandhill cranes and snow bunting, for example.

In fact, the reserve was established for game bird breeding, and is now much used by birders and hunters. Bird hunters and birders can be the same people. Audubon was.

I finally reach the turnoff to Pool 10 after having commanded and commanded Zipper to stop digging after critters and I remember I’m on a solstice hike. The road to Pool 10 is gated shut. It’s not yet noon but I turn around and head back. I’m thinking that at Stonehenge in the English midlands a crowd has already dispersed after — with luck — having seen a shaft of light from the setting sun pierce spaces in the stone monoliths, as was done millennia ago.

But I’m walking beside the sedge meadows, the sky somber, on Wyoming Road in the middle of Carlos Avery, with half of the less than nine hours of allotted daylight left, and one wet foot. That’s good enough for me and Zipper. It’s been a fine, if short, hike. We pack it in.

No matter what side of this island you look from, you see ocean, and lots of it. The waves rush in and pummel the shoreline with a tremendous force that seems mighty, yet is simply a harmless trickle against the pumice shoreline, like a 2-year-old hammering a roofing nail with a plastic bat. Waves furiously crash as if about to rip apart the island, but everything stays the same.

Again and again, they pound, but not much ever changes.

I was giving a couple just-out-of-college hitchhikers a ride to go camping up at the dead end of the road at the top of Kauai, and one asked,“In your years of coming here … has it changed much?” I love to give my elderly opinions and paused to reflect. Just then we crossed one of many single-lane bridges that might have been built

by Polynesians in 1650.

My sporty rental car came very close to scratching off the mirrors on the ancient rock sides of the narrow “bridge,” and as we very slowly bumped along over the crusty wood planks I replied, “Change? Not much.”

And this is the main problem with this Hawaiian “paradise.” It is pretty much the same every day. Maybe a light 10-minute sprinkle of rain in the morning helps keep the plants lush in their 50 shades of green. But then that cute little rain cloud casually jets off to the southeast in its quest to visit the coffee fields of Kona before it evaporates without notice. A picture of this could be in the dictionary next to the word doldrums.

This paradise has (again and again) the same old, same old, pastel blue sky that looks down on the dull days of December or January. The drudgery of always wearing a Panama hat makes one wish for a simple cold snap to sort of shake things up, just a bit.

But no, we are stuck with another 78- to 82-degree warm day that is lazily humid. There was however, just a bit of chill air one night at our friend’s place.

We had to close the windows halfway to keep all the breeze out, but short pants and light shirts still kept us a bit too warm, so the door was opened to let more breeze gently sweep in.

The ladies are either fortunate or cursed to have only one hair style choice: “let it go.” There is not enough “Extra Hold” spray to keep any ‘do in place for more than 20 minutes, which is why weddings in Hawaii are so short.There was a sweet wedding just three stories

down in front of our condo building one morning. It was short and sweet! The 30-something couple ran out barefoot onto the damp grass by the ocean in their matching cream-colored tux and bridal gown. No wispy veil is allowed in a Hawaiian wedding, as too many grooms have been lost at sea trying to catch the windswept lace.

The couple was followed out onto the lawn by a still photographer and a video camera dude dressed in snappy shorts, an untucked shirt and flipflops.

The minister took her position with the ocean as her sanctuary and then the couple posed for photos. Photos naturally come first in a Hawaiian wedding as they try to capture the moment quickly before five minutes of that gentle warm humid breeze makes the bride look like Miley Cyrus the morning after a performance at the MTV Music Awards.

The minister understands that the photos are the most important thing in an Hawaiian wedding, as most of the family and in-laws cannot attend due to the wedding’s location.

In fact, this wedding had one attendee, probably the bride’s sister, or best friend. Apparently the video dude also signs wedding licenses as a hired witness/best man. This saves the couple a lot on catering and champagne.

The happy couple saved even more, as the video dude clearly did not care much for champagne as evidenced by the flask in his back pocket. He seemed to need many breaks due to lugging that seven-pound camera around for a 15-minute wedding.

ceremony took less than three minutes, a lesson to all pastors out there. But I understand they pay by the hour and you in Minnesota have the luxury of working in climate-controlled locations for most weddings.

The poor Hawaiian pastor has the pressure of rushing to the ceremony at precisely the right moment because up until that moment, she needs to stay in an air-conditioned car so her hair isn’t ravaged by the gentle humid assault before the photos can be taken.

The wedding is over in a snap and the happy bride hands the bouquet (no sense working up a sweat tossing it) to the maid of honor. The bride races 10 steps back to their condo and strips off the humid soaked gown (obviously purchased in a Minnesota bridal shop) and, sure enough, she is wearing a swimsuit underneath and is ready for a race to the restless, tossing aqua ocean.

Yes, it is just another average, ordinary day in Hawaii. That same old ocean tosses our happy couple around in a metaphor for the many years of bliss they will have ahead in their marriage. No wonder they say the wedding day is the happiest day of your life. The Forest Lake Police Department reported the following incidents:

block of Lake Street N. on Dec. 21. He had dropped off his truck for repairs, and when he picked it up he noticed that the passenger side door had been tampered with. An engine programmer valued at $1,800 was found missing.

Arrest/Citation Officers stopped a vehicle for speed and noticed the smell of alcohol coming from the interior of the vehicle. The driver was a 32-year-old male from Stacy, and officers reported that his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot. He admitted to drinking 4-5 beers. The driver was issued a citation for a fourth-degree DWI with a blood alcohol level of more than .08.

After further investigation, a 26-year-old male from Stillwater was arrested for a court violation and on an outstanding warrant. A 41-year-old female from Stillwater was also cited for trespassing. The male was transported to the Washington County Jail for booking.

An officer responded to a report of a theft on the 14800 block of 62nd Street on Dec. 14.

Two of the four tires from a vehicle had been removed. Upon arrival, the officer observed that the two tires that had been removed were still on scene and not stolen.

An officer responded to a report of a theft on the 3500 block of Settlers Way on Dec. 17. This is currently under investigation.

An officer took a theft report from an individual in the 7700 block of Minar Lane N. who reported items stolen from the mail on Dec. 18.

Officers responded to an employee theft report in the 200 block of Washington Avenue on Dec. 18. A female juvenile from New Richmond was ultimately cited for theft and trespassed from the property.

An officer took a report of a possible theft in the 100 block of Main Street S. on Dec. 18. An individual left their wallet on a table at a business and when they returned they were unable to locate it.

Upon officer’s arrival, it was found all parties were intoxicated and at fault. The officer mediated and cleared the incident.

An officer received a report of possible intoxicated female attempting to get into a vehicle in the 900 block of Myrtle Street on Dec. 20. The officer responding found that the female had been stopped prior to getting in the car and received a ride home from a responsible individual. No police action was required.

An officer received a complaint of a dog left outside for a long time and barking to be let in the house in the 400 block of Greeley Street N. on Dec. 21.

The officer arrived and advised the owner, who ultimately let the dog inside.

GARDEN GURU: Plant consultant Donna Tatting answers questions on call FROM PAGE 1

As with gardening, the questions are seasonal: in the spring, inquirers ask about what perennials to plant and how much shade they should have; after May, the questions are almost exclusively about vegetables.

Around this time of year, Tatting said that many of the questions she receives are about caring for plants received during the holidays, such as poinsettias and Christmas cacti.

Often, recipients of these plants have formed some kind of emotional connection and are reluctant to throw the plants away. Her recommendations to keep these indoor plants healthy are to keep it away from heat sources, out of direct sunlight and to make sure they have drip trays. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most house plants are native tropical plants,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tropical plants are used to a humid climate, and spraying them with a mister is not humidity. The best thing you can do is put some rocks in the bottom of the drip tray to hold in the moisture, if not put them near a humidifier.â&#x20AC;?

This year has been an unusual one for outdoor plants due to the warm, rainy autumn and winter. Gardeners have phoned in concerns that bulbs are flowering when they shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t beâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Tatting said sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s noticed small buds emerging on her own lilacs at home.

pending on the plant, is to leave it alone and â&#x20AC;&#x153;let nature do what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gonna do this year.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We always think every year is weird, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re set up for weird in this climate,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Meanwhile, she predicts that the saturated ground will get the 2016 growing season off to a good start. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll actually have only good effects; right now thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing wrong with too much water.

Starting the growing season hydrated is always an advantage.â&#x20AC;?

Beyond her interest in gardening, Tatting leads a multifaceted life as a crafter of secondhand wool applique products, which she sells out of Vintage Junky, just across the street from Forest Lake Floral. As a vendor, she spends several hours a week working there, and sells handmade table rugs, ornaments and other crafts.

Tatting also has a strong interest in historical research. One of her proudest moments was when she assisted a friend with writing a book, offering to search through Minneapolis historical archives for details about the robbery by the James-Younger gang in Northfield, Minnesota.

She ended up finding a never-before-discovered document that definitively proved who killed the bank clerk, earning her a well-deserved accreditation in the finished

Tatting has had a lifelong familiarity with historical research: her father was a historian passionate about the life of Billy the Kid. She regularly visits New Mexico to continue her research and study of the life and era of

the Old West gangster.

Her acquired research skills translate well into answering questions for curious gardeners. With 14 years worth of expertise as a Master Gardener, Tatting is often able to answer any question about gardening on the spot. During the summer, Longoria and his wife Connie Fullmer run a nonprofit program called Mentoring Peace Through Art. Inner city high-schoolers participate in a summerlong camp where they work together to paint Minneapolis neighborhoods with new, unique murals to bring art to the community. The program emphasizes letting the students take the lead, assigning some to leadership positions and allowing them to direct others to familiarize themselves with the atmosphere of the working world, preparing them for future careers.

Longoria also brings similar art projects to schools. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We teach leadership,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sell it as art, we sell it as classroom discipline.â&#x20AC;?

He said that after he introduces the classes to the process they need to complete a collaborative art project, he is able to leave them with the materials and skills to continue creating art independent of adult guidance. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For less than $500 they can produce, but they have the capability to go on,â&#x20AC;? Longoria said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They own the aesthetic.â&#x20AC;?

He has not yet brought his art program to any schools in the Stillwater area, but he is always looking for new opportunities to instruct students in this relationship between art and leadership. He said that his mission is not about public artâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about community art, which enhances the places where people spend their time on a day-to-day basis. This is a deep-running premise throughout his artwork, and it is especially evident in his paintings for the Bush Foundation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is all about communicating to people who work at the Bush Foundation not to forget that the people theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to help are right out there, and their eyes are watching,â&#x20AC;? he said.

In other trends, Howitz said that many northern species, such as red-bellied woodpeckers, have withdrawn from the area, and southern species that have stopped migrating make up a large quantity of sightings.

Howitz said that most of the species he identifies are by song. Some participants within the area are able to perform a backyard feeder count, where they simply record every bird observed in their yard during the day of the count.

“It combines recreational activities with science,” he said. “It's interesting to see how it changes year to year.”

had very confident people to identify, because all of them are very similar to other species and hard to tell apart,” Howitz said.

Howitz said that the main goal of the count is not an absolute number, but the relative trends of bird populations. One of the factors that affects these trends is the changing landscape of the area, which has been converted from mostly farms into subdivisions. Howitz said that as houses get older, the trees that were planted around them get bigger and provide new habitat for bird species.

He also said that the bird populations have recovered significantly since the pesticide DDT was banned in 1973. Shortly after, it was a rare thing to see a bald eagle during the count because their populations had been decimated by the chemical.

Now, Howitz said that 51 eagles is a typical total.

On Dec. 26, more than 40 Minnesotans turned out to traipse across fields, forests and swamps, searching high and low for birds of every kind in the 116th annual Christmas Bird Count.

The Audubon Society Bird Count first began when, in an attempt to prevent hunters from shooting birds in yearly Christmas hunts, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman suggested that they go out and count them instead. The tradition survived and eventually became a yearly census, keeping track of the population, movement and other trends of thousands of bird species across the U.S., Canada and, more recently, South America.

Jim Howitz is the compiler for the count’s St. Paul Northeastern region, which has Willernie at its center. This year there were 42 participants who drove and walked through assigned locations in a 15-mile-wide circle, recording every bird that they saw or heard. This year's total count species count came in at 57; only two places behind the St. Paul Northeastern area record.

“The weather really made a difference with the birds because of the open water,” Howitz said.

The number of ducks and swans was quite large, and Howitz said he spotted a record number of gulls for this time of year. “The weather was good and the birds were outstanding, in that we saw so many more than we usually do.” In total, there were 9,528 birds observed in the St. Paul Northeastern area.

One particularly interesting find was a varied thrush that had been spotted earlier in the season in a cemetery in Marine on St. Croix.

“It's been there for at least a month, and the people there were very happy

to see it,” Howitz said.

The Xcel Energy power plant is also one of the best places to observe birds, since the water is always open there.

“When the warm water from the plant hits the cold water, it stuns the fish, which is easy food for birds,” some of which stay throughout the winter, he said. During the Dec. 26 count, he said he approached the Xcel plant and saw what looked like a dense cloud above the water. It turned out to be an immense flock of gulls. In total, the local count recorded 1,600 gulls.

“The old record was 65, so we shattered it,” he said. “This is going on all over the state with open water areas.”

The open water provides a year-round habitat for waterfowl, and also keeps them safe from hunting seasons further south when they normally migrate.

“Half of all mallards every year get shot,” Howitz said. “It's the same with Canada geese.

So there is a lot of incentive for hunted species to stick around.”

The count always takes place sometime between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5, depending on when local compilers organize it. This particular hunt within the St. Paul Northeast circle, began in 1958 and has had a devoted following of experienced birders. Howitz said that one participant, Dean Honetschlager, has attended every count since 1959.

Following a day of traversing woods, hill and dale, the counters gathered for a potluck at Warner Nature Center, where they share their experiences and sightings. This year, they collected three species that have never been seen in the count before: the greater scaup, Thayer's gull and whitecrowned sparrow.

Dangerous ice conditions on St. Croix A tugboat is breaking ice in the St. Croix River to allow construction crews to continue work on the new St. Croix Crossing during the winter months. Currently, crews are breaking ice within and downstream of the bridge construction zone – as far south as the overhead power lines coming from the Xcel Energy Allen S. King Power Plant near Bayport. With the warm water from the power plant this effort helps prevent ice from building up near the bridge construction site by creating a channel for it to disperse and flow downstream. This activity can cause thin, irregular and dangerous ice conditions on the river. The project is asking snowmobilers and other outdoor recreationists to use extreme caution on the river between Stillwater and Bayport and to stay away from the construction area. Thin ice signage has been placed at area public boat launches. Additional signage will be posted on the river once the ice thickens.
