WHITE BEAR LAKE — Lakeside restaurant and bar Admiral D’s will revive centuries of lake history with the purchase of a 63-foot dinner cruise vessel, The Admiral. Owner of Admiral D’s Brian McGoldrick said that it has always planned to include dinner cruises in its long-term plan since the beginning, so the timing was perfect. Excelsior Bay Charters on Lake Minnetonka happened to be selling this vessel, previously known as Summer Wind. Sara Markoe Hanson from the White Bear Lake Historical Society said that during the heyday of the resort era between 1870 and 1910, ferry boats ran almost like a bus line to popular stops on the lake. These boats operated from Ramaley Pavilion, near where the VFW now stands. “They weren’t just for fun,” she said. “They were part of the lake transportation system. There were stops here, stops there, at places like Wildwood Amusement Park. It was rumored to have stopped at some of the resorts, but it’s not totally sure because some of these places had docks that would’ve been too small. It definitely ran from Ramaley’s back and forth to Wildwood. These boats claimed they could hold 100200 passengers. Even if they get 100, they have a goodsized boat; it’s nothing to sneeze at. Often they had two decks; bigger than most of what we see today.” The Admiral, in comparison, is a skipper liner dinner cruise boat, which can hold up to 80 people, but more comfortably fits 60, McGoldrick said. He did not disclose the purchase price for the vessel, but said that similar boats in new condition can be purchased for up to $1.5 million. Since the boat had a former life as a vessel on Lake Minnetonka, he said the price was less than that, but still “very expensive.” SEE THE ADMIRAL, PAGE 12
Croix Chordsmen celebrate 65 years BY JACKIE BUSSJAEGER STAFF WRITER
STILLWATER – The Croix Chordsmen, a male chorus comprised of residents from all over the St. Croix Valley, recently presented its 65th anniversary concert. The performance took place at Stillwater High School, with two showings on Saturday, April 2. The Chordsmen, under the direction of Matt Hall, performed some of their traditional tunes, as well as some newer material. Several of the group’s star quartets stepped out to perform separate numbers, and the show featured guest performances from the groups Vintage Mix and St. Croix Crossing. This concert was a celebration of the chorus’s long history in the St. Croix Valley, and began with some of the oldest numbers, according to Hall. “It’s really about keeping the integrity and history of the chorus, and connecting with former members,” Hall said. “‘The Old Songs’ are how we start every rehearsal; it’s a barbershop tradition.” In preparation for the show, members of the group searched through decades worth of historical photographs and records to trace the history of their chorus. One of these showed Moody Chevrolet

Garage in River Falls, where the group was founded on the second floor in Moose Hall. The group first began in 1951, when locals from River Falls, Wisconsin received a temporary charter for a barbershop chapter in February. The group went through a number of name changes and even received national attention on The Today Show. The
group moved its rehearsals to Hudson in 1956, and came to its current base in Stillwater in 1968. The Croix Chordsmen started off the performance and handed the stage over to the first guest performers. SEE CROIX CHORDSMEN, PAGE 12
