Braver Angels aims to bridge the political divide BY SHANNON GRANHOLM MANAGING EDITOR
2024 is bound to have some heated discussions, especially when it comes to politics. That’s where Braver Angels comes in. The organization will offer a workshop titled, “Skills for Disagreeing Better about Politics” Monday, Feb. 5, at Centennial Elementary in Circle Pines. Braver Angels is a grassroots organization that seeks to strengthen relationships and communities harmed by partisan polarization. It offers communication skills as a means to bridge political divides that drive animosity and prevent people from working together on shared problems.
“What I like about Braver Angels is it is really to get people to change the way we do politics. We’re not trying to change people’s minds about issues, but rather just help them change the way they think about each other,” said Morgan Holle, a state coordinator for Braver Angels. “Polarization has reached such a height that we are seeing each other as enemies. If you think that person is a monster, there’s no way you are going to relate to them, or work on some sort of community issue.” SEE TALKING POLITICS, PAGE 2

Disney on Ice allows White Bear skater to evolve BY SHANNON GRANHOLM MANAGING EDITOR
For many figure skaters, starring in a Disney on Ice show is a far-fetched pipe dream that likely will never happen. But for White Bear Lake native Sydney Berrier, it’s a reality. Berrier will perform in the role of Raya from “The Last Dragon” in the Disney on Ice “Magic in the Stars” show Feb. 9-11 at the Target Center. Berrier started skating when she was 4 years old because she wanted a skating dress. She grew up skating at the White Bear Sports Center and
has been coached by Rose Esteb since she was about 10. She graduated from Minnesota Online High School in 2018 and has been a professional skater for Disney on Ice since she auditioned in 2018. She had her eyes set on Disney on Ice because she has always enjoyed the performing aspect of skating. She especially enjoyed the annual ice show at the sports center. “It piqued my interest,” Berrier said about Disney on Ice. “The family entertainment aspect of it and being able to dress up in crazy costumes and play characters
sounded fun,” she said.
Berrier is an ISI (Ice Skating Industry) freestyle 9 skater, USFS (United States Figure Skating) Freeskate gold medalist, USFS Moves in The Field gold medalist, and a Minnesota State Open Juvenile Bronze medalist. Raya has been a fun role for Berrier, as the 23-year-old gets to combine her skating skills and aerial skills. In addition to skating, she also attended Circus Juventas in St. Paul while growing up.

The Front Line Foundation (TFLF) has been selected as the charitable benefactor of the eighth annual Guns and Hoses charity hockey game on Friday, Feb. 23, at the Blaine Super Rink. Proceeds from the event will be given to TFLF to assist it in supporting Minnesota’s 60,000 first responders. The annual Guns and Hoses hockey game pits law enforcement officers (Guns) versus firefighters (Hoses) from Anoka County and surrounding counties. To date, the event has raised more than $250,000 for local first responders. “When we interviewed recipient partners for this year’s event, it was clear The Front Line Foundation was the group we needed to work with,” said Wes Pederson, chair of Lino Lakes Volunteers in Public Safety, the organization that puts on the event. “We have been very impressed with the work The Front Line Foundation has done to support our first responders.”

Talking politics : Braver Angels offers up skills for disagreeing better FROM PAGE 1
Holle has been involved with the organization since 2021. He turned to the organization after the heated 2020 election. “I was doing all the things that Braver Angels tells you not to do, and trying to convince people to vote for my party. I knew that I needed to change course, and Braver Angels was my concrete way of doing that,” he explained. In 2022, over 24,000 people participated in Braver Angels, including workshops, debates, oneon-one conversations, town halls and online discussions. As of 2023, the organization had hosted over 3,200 events. Braver Angels has alliances formed all throughout the U.S. Currently, there are 104 registered alliances throughout the U.S. There are currently three alliances operating in the Twin Cities, as well as one in northern Minnesota and one in southern Minnesota. Holle said the organization’s workshops, like the one that is coming up, are the “bread and butter,” but the organization also offers other things like a podcast, e-learning courses and more. A goal of Braver Angels is to preserve relationships. “There are people who’ve lost family members and friends or come out of contact with them because of political differences, and we’re trying to address that,” Holle said. “We want to allow people to preserve relationships, but also be active and be able to boldly speak their minds.” The interactive workshop is designed to offer basic communication and listening skills
that people tend to forget when they are talking about politics or other important issues. It’s also about allowing participants to hear from “the other side” and what their concerns are. “This workshop really gives people skills for disagreeing and also a motivation to have those conversations,” he said. Melinda Voss is a state coordinator for Braver Angels and the co-chair of the Twin Cities East Metro Alliance. She got involved in the organization back in 2020 after hearing about it on Minnesota Public Radio. “I was immediately interested and went and check out the website,” she said. The East Metro alliance, which is the local alliance of Braver Angels, serves Ramsey and Washington counties and typically meets once a month. She recalled that when she was growing up in the ’50s and ’60s, her parents would meet with a group of conservatives and liberals to discuss their points of view. “They would get together in someone’s living room and they would discuss a public issue,” she said. “They would say their points of view and they all liked each other and got along, and then they would have cake and ice cream … They would be able to listen to each other and talk to each other and explain their points of view. We seem to have lost that.” Voss said people often have more common ground than they think. “There really are more points of agreement than we have been led to believe, and I think it is also important to be able to disagree with the other side and be okay that
we don’t agree. It doesn’t mean we need to vilify the other side or hold them as being so different from us that we have nothing in common.” In addition to schools or community education, the organization also hosts workshops at churches. This past fall, Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Circle Pines created a new ministry called “The Eleanor Squad.” Each month, the ministry hosts one event between services that deals with current issues, including gun violence prevention, climate concerns, immigration, Christian nationalism and more. Member Renee Dietz said she reached out to Braver Angels to see if they would be interested in offering a workshop in the spring. “We wanted to host this session since we know that there are members of our congregation who are conservative and those who are progressive and we want to be able to provide opportunities for them to understand and communicate respectfully with each other,” Dietz said. “We are not trying to change anyone’s mind about their political views, but want to offer educational events for members to learn more about what issues are relevant to them as Christians and members of society.” Those who are interested in attending the Feb. 5 workshop through Centennial Community Education are asked to preregister. CIRCLE PINES CITY COUNCIL SNIPPETS • City staff and the City Council are hopeful the “missing link” of the Rice Creek Regional North Trail will finally receive the funding it needs to be completed. (See “Anoka County requests $6.75 million for missing trail link” for more information.) • Changes are coming to utility rates. The water rate will be $9.90, the sewer flat rate will be $13.75 and the storm sewer flat rate will be $9. The flat rate will go toward the cost of repairs done throughout the community over the years. Each resident should plan to see a $3.15 increase per month to the utility rates. The Utilities Commission is not recommending an increase in garbage and recycling rates this year. Gas rates will also not change. • The Centennial Fire District responded to 402 calls in Circle Pines and an additional 85 mutual aid calls in 2023. A vast majority of calls were medical; firefighters fought 33 structure fires as well. Circle Pines Station 1 is well-staffed with 15 firefighters. There are five recruits in various stages of training. Fire Station 1 is working to reduce the number of non-emergency calls that they respond to. For a lot of these calls, the police department will respond. If needed, the fire department will respond if the police department requests they be dispatched. A new fire engine will be at the station later this year or in early 2025. • Election judges have been appointed for the presidential nominating primary on March 5. • Language of section 320.01 in the City Code will be revised. The update was recommended by WSB, the city’s engineer. To meet the requirements of the city’s MS4 permit, the language regarding pet waste is required. Another update is also needed in section 1141, which deals with salt storage at commercial, industrial and institutional facilities.

Weird winter
can appreciate some of the benefits of a mild winter, but find the extreme weather fluctuations we’ve been experiencing this year unsettling. It makes you wonder if we’re witnessing a glimpse of what winters in Minnesota might look and feel like in the not-too-distant future. If current meteorological models are correct, this year Minnesotans of all ages could experience the warmest winter in their lifetimes. Personally I’ve already seen some things that I’ve never seen before in all the years of covering the area, like the latest White Bear Lake ice-in on record and the complete lack of ice anglers on the lake until mid-January. “We come from the land of ice and Angle of snow!” is the opening lyric from the “Immigrant song” by the British rock View band Led Zeppelin. The song, a proto-metal ode to the Viking invasion of Paul Dols England, features a driving drum beat, percussive guitar and vocal chants that vividly evoke tough, battle hardened invaders from the north. Led Zeppelin rarely allows its music to be used commercially. However, if the band was more willing to share, this song could be a perfect anthem for the state’s NFL franchise Minnesota Vikings. I grew up during the Bud Grant, Fran Tarkenton and Purple People Eaters era of the Vikings and remember that exhibiting resilience and toughness in the extreme weather was an important aspect of the team’s identity. The image of stoic descendants of Scandinavian immigrants surviving and thriving in the frozen north was, and still is to a certain extent, an important part of our state’s identity. Will this and other unique aspects of the landscape and life in Minnesota be lost to future generations? A pragmatic assessment of a mild winter with less snowfall reveals some pros and cons. The positive aspects include lower costs to heat our homes, and driving is also easier and less stressful. The negative aspects include threats to our boreal forests, because there are certain invasive pests that are only killed when temperatures dip well below zero. Resort owners, ice fishing enthusiasts, snowmobilers and anyone who enjoys winter sports will find a milder than average winter less than ideal, and the lack of snow will contribute to already existing drought conditions. Local event organizers are also having to reconsider where they conduct long standing events. The recent World Championship Snow Sculpture event in Stillwater benefited from a timely string of cold days and nights that thankfully facilitated snow-making prior to the event. The annual BEAR’ly Open golf-on-ice benefit for the White Bear Area Emergency Food shelf has been canceled (Friday night’s community dance and silent auction will go on as planned). In response to climate change, there are efforts in motion to lessen our dependence on fossil fuels. A recent road trip I took up to Duluth in an EV might help illustrate some of the infrastructure challenges (and progress) we’re experiencing during what could be a difficult transition to alternative, more sustainable, energy sources. Before the trip, I discovered that the two rapid charging stations I’ve relied on during previous trips were both broken. I decided to make the trip anyway and ended up using a recently installed Electrify America facility in Pine City, a level two charger at Canal Park in Duluth and a level one charger at my dad’s house. Thankfully, by using all of the resources available, I was able to safely make this winter roundtrip without experiencing any range anxiety. It’s a personal anecdote, but it might be a modest example of how there’s not always just one solution and that we’re probably going to need to approach this transitional time from a variety of angles. Perhaps some of the stoic, survival characteristics of our ancestors will help us adapt to the challenges we are now facing.

Helping people cope with lifechanging emergencies There are experiences for which there are no predetermined expectations yet it is still possible to be completely surprised. Such was the case during my recent police car ride along with officer BJ Stepan. I met BJ at the Centennial Lakes Police Department. We did quick introductions with the staff, and we were off. He The was careful manage Unexpected to expectations suggesting that Paul Lundh it might be an uneventful night. But just a few minutes later, we got the first call. It was a medical issue, and we were on our way with lights and sirens. When we arrived, BJ showed just the right mix of professionalism and compassion that clearly helped the patient. His college degrees in psychology and law enforcement were paying dividends. When the patient left in the ambulance, we were freed up for the next call. And that call was from a local gas station where we
discovered that a pair of older women had filled their car with gas and had driven off without paying. At the time of this writing, the thieves are still at large. Not long after, the second medical call came in. This time it was an older male who had agonal breathing. Fearing heart failure, BJ flipped on the lights and sirens and we were off a second time. As we arrived, BJ suggested I wait in the car. With the radio on, I was able to see and hear the event from the cul-de-sac. The ambulance arrived and it was reported that the patient had been shocked twice though no status was given. Before long the man’s family started to arrive. A younger woman walked up to an older woman, they hugged and something was said causing the younger woman to drop to her knees sobbing. I was heartbroken by the obvious pain this family was feeling. BJ stopped back to confirm the man passed and went back to offer what counsel he could. Just after dinner, we got a third medical call. This time a middle-aged man (younger than yours truly) was found not breathing. For a third time we flew to the scene with lights
and sirens. It didn’t take long to figure out that this was the second person in the evening who didn’t make it. The man had lived in a neighborhood with families whose kids and grandkids grew up together; a true community. Within minutes, people began to gather with a lot of hugs and tears. For the second time in only a few hours, I was witness to a family in crisis. Since then, I’ve had time to reflect. Part of me might have expected a ready-for-TV experience with car chases and arrests. Instead, BJ spent the entire shift helping people cope with life changing emergencies. Three medical calls with two deaths and a tank of gas swiped by two grandmothers was just not what I’d thought it would be about. Finally, I’m grateful to BJ and others in uniform who are there to help however is needed. Thank you for all you do. Paul Lundh is a longtime resident of Centerville and a periodic columnist for the Quad Community Press.

Charity game : Foundation supports first responders and their families FROM PAGE 1
Since its inception in late 2018, TFLF has supported law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs and members of the National Guard across Minnesota to grant financial support to families of first responders who have died in the line of duty. The foundation’s mission is to bridge the gap between the death and benefits being paid, support that
can help families with ongoing expenses. The foundation also provides support in the purchase of tactical equipment for first responders that is not included in department budgets. To date, TFLF has paid out $450,000 in death benefits and equipment funding. “We are extremely humbled to be selected as this year’s benefactor,” Suzanne Holt, TFLF
president/CEO. “This is a great honor that will help us continue to do great things for the men and women who protect us every day.” Pederson says that the annual Guns and Hoses game started small, but has grown to something very robust. The free event features raffles, food and beverage sales and an after-party that all raises funds for the selected benefactor.
The hockey game pits law enforcement officers against firefighters from Anoka County.
“While the police have won every year so far, it has become a very competitive event with a 1,000 people attending the last few years,” he said. “We are excited to make 2024’s game our best ever.” For more information about TFLF, visit www.thefrontlinemn.org.

• The 6-acre property located at 6590 12th Avenue (near Birch Street) will be rezoned from R-1X (Single Family Executive) to PSP (Public and Semi-Public) for the purpose of constructing a water treatment plant. City Planner Katie Larsen wanted to clarify that this will not be a wastewater treatment plant, as she said there seemed to be some confusion from residents who attended the public hearing at the Planning and Zoning Board. Tentative construction is planned for this summer; the plant will be operational in 2026. The city plans to host an open house in mid-February for residents who live nearby. Larsen said the city will mail out letters and post information up on the city website once a date is scheduled. • The city is making some minor tweaks to its zoning ordinance. Ordinance No. 08-22
amending Chapter 1007 in the zoning code was adopted in November 2022 and went into effect in January 2023. The city is incorporating the zoning code into the city’s online version code of ordinances published by American Legal Publishing. Larsen explained that as part of the codification and to make the code easier to read, some section numbers of the zoning code are being renumbered. The content of the zoning code is not changing. • A Culver’s is coming to Lino Lakes. (See business brief for more information.) The next City Council work session will be at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, in the Community Room. There will also be a regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at City Hall. Shannon Granholm

BUSINESS BRIEF Culver’s coming to Lino Lakes
CONTRIBUTED
Culver’s is proposed for the 1.24-acre site located off of Otter Lake Road and Main Street in Lino Lakes.
LINO LAKES — Culver’s is planning to build a new restaurant at 7103 Otter Lake Road. The 1.24-acre site is located along in the northwest quadrant of Otter Lake Road and CSAH 14 (Main Street). The site is currently vacant commercial land. The plans include a 4,260-square-foot building with outdoor dining and a drive-thru service. Council Member Christopher Lyden wanted to know if some tweaks could be made to the design of the drive-thru, as it is similar to other locations where he has seen have some traffic backups. “It (Culver’s) is popular … Could all of the drive-
thru traffic be at one end of the building versus all the way around the building, so it doesn’t impact the parking and kids trying to cross the parking lot?” He questioned. “It is a little bit of a mess.” City Engineer Diane Hankee explained that the design was partially due to the size of the site and access. The council ultimately approved the site performance agreement with VoranDeSoto LLC for the new Culver’s location. Shannon Granholm

Cougars go long to pull out close win BY BRUCE STRAND SPORTS CONTRIBUTOR
JON NAMYST | CONTRIBUTED
Jordan Metz’s long inbounds passes helped clinch a 72-67 win over Anoka.
Jordan Metz went into Patrick Mahomes mode twice late in Centennial’s game with Anoka last Tuesday night. The senior forward heaved long bullet passes on inbounds plays from under the basket that Marisa Frost and Autumn McCall turned into points to close out a 7267 win at home. “Oh, yes. She is my QB-1,” grinned McCall when a reporter asked if this particular asset
of Metz’s is called upon often. Added coach Jamie Sobolik, “Jordan has a heck of an arm.” With the Cougars (9-8) up 66-63 and Anoka pressuring the inbounds play, Metz fired the ball over the center line to Frost, who got fouled on a layup and sank two free shots. Up 70-57 with four seconds left, same situation, and this time Metz went long to McCall, who wheeled in for a layup as time ran out. Frost, senior guard, sank 25 points, mostly with feather-soft layups after slashing through
the defense. McCall finished with 23 points. Metz, best known at CHS as a standout soccer goalie, had 10 points in addition to her highlight-reel passes. For Anoka (11-7), Even Eppinga netted 15 points, Maddy Frekking 14 and Lydia Lakanen 13 with 12 points. Centennial routed Armstrong 69-36 on Friday with Frost logging 24 points on 10-for-15 shooting (4for-6 on three’s) and six steals. McCall and Molly Monson added eight points each and Claire Pullman seven.
Cougar skaters in title hunt after January surge BY BRUCE STRAND SPORTS CONTRIBUTOR
Centennial boys hockey is riding a nine-game unbeaten streak and battling for the conference crown after drubbing Osseo and Champlin Park at home last week. “The Cougs have had a good month of January. The boys have really bought into playing gritty, tough Circle Pines hockey,” coach Ritch Menne said. “They are playing to their identity and it’s been really fun to watch.” Centennial are 8-0-1 in January, lifting their record to 12-4-2 overall and 9-1-1 in the Northwest Suburban with four games left.
Andover is 8-1-1 and they’ll clash Feb. 10. Eight players scored in a 9-1 win over Osseo (4-14-1) on Tuesday with Heath Nelson drilling two goals and Logan Adams, Nick Carls, Austin Petersen, Alex Clampitt, Harper Searles, Kellen Krumwiede and Kellen Searles one each. Gavin Schahn in goal made 19 saves. Petersen notched two goals and two assists in a 7-2 win over Champlin Park (10-9-1) on Thursday. Carls, Adams, Nelson, Clampitt and Harper Searles also scored, the last two on power plays. Shots were even at 26 each. Easton Cody in the nets made 24 saves.
Top scorers are Nelson with 24 goals and 18 assists, and Searles with 14 and 29. The Cougars have two non-conference games this week before playing their last three NWSC games the following week.

Alpine ski teams finish 2nd in NWSC
The Centennial/Spring Lake Park girls and boys each finished second in the Northwest Suburban after the final conference meet Thursday at Trollhaugen. Blaine boys and girls both were champions. The girls team placed second in each conference meet. The boys had their best meets at the end and moved up to tie for second with Anoka, improving from eighth and fifth places the last two years. Seven CSLP skiers made all-conference. For the boys, they were Bruce Johnson, placing third overall in the season standings, along with Caleb Nelson, ninth, and Tyler McDew, 21st. For the girls, they were Katie Peterson, ninth; Katie Toensing, 12th; Annie Trettel, 18th; and Ella Nelson, 22nd. The mid-30’s temperature caused problems. “The boys race had to be stopped after 29 racers went down the hill, as a portion of the course was down to dirt,” coach Derrick Taylor reported. “The course was re-set on a different part of the hill and the run was fully re-started — something coaches with decades of experience have never seen happen.” CSLP competed at the Wild Mountain Invitational on Saturday in a strong field from across the state. The girls placed 10th and the girls 11th among 20 teams, with Hill-Murray placing first in both. Next is Section 7 in Biwabik. Bruce Strand
SPORTS BRIEFS
GIRLS HOCKEY With two more shutouts last week, Centennial/Spring Lake Park is 20-1-2 and riding a 15-game win streak. The No. 7 ranked Cougars beat Armstrong/ Cooper 7-0 on Tuesday with goals by Mia Sutch (two), Brooke Ueland, Noelle Hemr, Teagan Kulenkamp, Ellie Newpower, and Grace Laager one each. Kulenkamp and Katie Ball made two assists each. The Cougars won 4-0 over Champlin Park/Coon Rapids on Saturday when Kulenkamp scored twice and Hemr had a short-handed goal and empty-netter. Kaitlin Groess
in goal made 13 and 30 saves. The Cougars have seven shutouts in the last eight games, and ten overall. The Cougars are 10-1-1 against Northwest Suburban foes with one game left, against Blaine. Andover is 8-0-1 with one game left, again CP/CR.
Cougars 73-61 loss on Friday evening, led by Seth Newbern with 21 points and Joel Shah with 15. Ty Burgoon meshed 22 points for the Cougars and Jackson Driessen added 10.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Centennial lost a close match to Rogers 32-27 there Thursday in their lone action last week. Logan Fu, Jack Ruegsegger, and Tyler Cook had pins for the Cougars. Sawyer Josewski won 8-6, and there was one forfeit win. The Cougars,15-14 overall and 5-7 in the Northwest Suburban, will close
WRESTLING
Centennial is 4-14 after a pair of conference losses last week. Anoka edged the Cougars 79-75, led by Payton Podany with 26 points, on Tuesday in Anoka. (Cougar scoring not available.) Armstrong (9-8) topped the host
Waiting Child
DANCE TEAM Centennial earned third place in Jazz in the final Northwest Suburban standings, compiled after three conference meets. Dancing to “La La Land” for High Kick and “Vienna” for Jazz, they have placed in the top five in each invitational. Their section meet will be Feb. 10 at Bloomington Kennedy. Bruce Strand
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Austin Petersen Centennial Hockey
Darian,15, is talkative, outgoing, helpful, and funny. He enjoys spending time outside fishing, riding dirt bike, and four-wheeling. Darian likes to cook, play video games, and play dodgeball. He would like to live in a rural community with a “country style” atmosphere.
Austin Petersen is one of the pillars of the Cougar hockey team (12-4-1) on both ends of the ice. The 5-foot-11, 172-pound senior has logged nine goals and 18 assists while contributing to a defense limiting opponents 2.6 goals per game. A three-year starter, he has 20 career goals and 50 assists. “Austin is playing with a ton of confidence right now. When Petersen is playing his game of speed and physicality, he’s one of the best defensemen in the state,” coach Ritch Menne assessed. “Austin is a great example to all of our younger players on the right way to play.
Following adoption, Darian will need to maintain contact with his siblings and birthparents.

There is a plethora
of stories for everyone of all ages to enjoy,” Berrier explained. Through her years with Disney on Ice, Berrier has learned a lot more about the entertainment industry. “As a figure skater, you don’t really train for quick changes, acting … it’s a learning curve,” she said. “It’s been fun to learn along the way.” Berrier, who described herself as an extrovert, said one of the main things she loves about the job is the traveling. Over the nine-month tour, Berrier will skate in hundreds of shows around the U.S. and even other countries. This summer, she is set to visit Mexico. In fact, more international tours is something that is on her bucket list. In addition to the traveling, she has enjoyed the opportunity to evolve as a skater.

“You have so many talented people collected into one place, and you can learn so much from each and every one of them,” she said. “Every single season that I do, I feel like I grow and evolve as a skater and become better. And I think that’s such a cool thing to be able to experience.” She plans to continue being a performer for many years to come, but once she feels satisfied with what she has achieved, she said she will hang up her skates and plans to go back to school, likely the University of Wisconsin-Stout to pursue a degree in industrial design.
