CIRCLE PINES — Beads of all colors and finishes fill the wall of Bear Hawk Indian Store.

The Native American crafts store was opened in December by Pat and Myron Rosebear, 48-year Circle Pines residents. They are part of the Ojibway tribe — and Myron has a little Sioux blood as well. They previously had a store on Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis. But that was a decade ago. In the meantime, they have sold their beads and crafts at powwows across the country.

Google visits Rice Lake Elementary

LINO LAKES — Google brought its newfangled learning tool to Rice Lake Elementary March 4, and students squealed in delight.

Google is on a tour across the U.S. and the world to

offer its virtual reality learning app and equipment to schools free of charge. The app will be released at the end of the tour this fall.

A fire destroyed a home in the 60 block of Circle Drive early in the morning Tuesday, Feb. 8.

CIRCLE PINES — Friends and community members have rallied around the couple whose home was burnt down Tuesday morning. More than $3,000 has been raised online for their loss through GoFundMe. Centennial Assistant Fire Chief David Bruder reports fire crews from four departments worked well together to fight the fire.

The call to a home in the 60 block of Circle Drive came in at 4:29 a.m., and police were on scene by 4:31 a.m., said Centennial Lakes Police Lieutenant Russell Blanck. Firefighters from the Centennial Fire District, Lexington Fire Department, Lino Lakes Public Safety Fire Division and Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department responded.

“Everybody did a great job — we worked very well together with the four departments,” said Centennial Fire District Assistant Chief David Bruder. “We also called in the Anoka County Fire Investigation Team to do the investigation.”

A fire started in the rear of the home and engulfed about half of the home. The upstairs floor was damaged to the point that it can no longer support weight, reported a family member of the victims. The basement was flooded.

"The home sustained very significant damage," said Blanck.

The couple escaped the home.

A MOMENT IN HISTORY: Liquor sales in Lino Lakes

Lino Lakes residents voted on the sale of liquor in 1958.

Although Prohibition officially ended on the national level in 1933, decisions about whether or not to allow the sale of liquor continued on the local level for many years after. This ballot from the city of Lino

Lakes indicates that by 1958, residents were in favor of allowing the sale of alcohol … but not by a large margin. The vote of 309 for liquor sales and 238 against the question indicates Anoka County’s longtime

temperance leanings were still strong in the middle of the 20th century.

The male was transported to the hospital to be treated for smoke-related and burn injuries. He reportedly has

second- and third-degree burns on his face and chest and remains in the hospital as of press time. The female was unharmed and is staying at a hotel.

Google came to Rice Lake because fifth-grade teacher Ian Hanlon heard about the Expeditions Pioneer Program tour and got the school on the waiting list for when company representatives came to Minnesota. He had been using Google's cardboard viewer for his own fun with other apps.

“I heard about Google

Cardboard and I bought one for myself because I thought it was the coolest toy,” said Hanlon.

He was so excited to see students reacting with audible wows to their journeys.

“It's so cool,” he said. “It is like music to a teacher's ears.”

Hanlon's students had just finished research projects on National Parks and were so

excited to travel to them with Google Expeditions.

Third-grade teacher Linda Drilling took her class to Egypt through Google Expeditions.

“Studying Egypt is part of our social studies curriculum, so this is a perfect resource for us,” she said. “We couldn't go on a field trip there.”

Other classes at Rice Lake

visited Greece, Angkor, the Thames River, Philadelphia, the American Museum of Natural History, various U.S. monuments and the ocean.

Qualifications of teachers, child-to-staff ratios and adequate supervisions are requirements in the developmental area.

Residential child care programs are inspected by the county, but DHS takes action if a violation is reported. DHS is the agency that grants and revokes licenses, in cooperation with the county.

A correction order is issued when a license holder fails to comply with an applicable law or rule which does not imminently endanger the health, safety or rights of those served by the program. For more serious issues, the license can be revoked, suspended or placed on conditional status.

Of Irish maidens and marriage

I

never questioned taking my husband’s last name.

While keeping your maiden name or hyphenating it might be the vogue thing to do these days, I was much too smitten to consider such a thing. At first I thought I was giving up my maiden name. But then I realized I was being given a gift to be associated with him. And I really liked his last name – short, sweet and simple.

As a bonus, it appealed to my meager feminism in a different way – it was my full-blooded Irish (with a touch of Scottish) grandmother’s maiden name. No, I wasn’t related to my husband-to-be.

Moore is the 16th most common surname in the United States.

My grandmother Gustina Moore Story married a Norwegian farmer, Arnold Solberg, in North Dakota Chaser in the 1930s. Back in those days, a Sara Marie Moore new wife often moved in with her mother-in-law along with her husband. Arnold’s mom was staunchly Norwegian and proceeded to educate Gustina in traditional Norwegian cooking. Her Irish traditions were put on the back burner. She learned how to make lefse and lutefisk for Christmas. I inherited a Norwegian outfit from her.

But now I’ve inherited her Irish name through another route. It has become a metaphor to me. What she left behind of her Irish heritage in a day when taking your husband’s name could actually mean putting your heritage to the side, I have gained back through marriage.

Not that it’s in a name. But it’s caused me to wonder more about her and my Irish ancestors. I did some research this week.

My great-great-great Irish grandmother Martha Caroline Benedict was born on St. Patrick’s Day, 1817 in upstate New York.

I wonder what her parents – ancestors with unknown names – felt that day. Perhaps they were fresh arrivals. Was it a comfort to them to have a child born on an Irish holiday in a new land?

At some point Martha moved from New York to Waterloo, Michigan. She married John Barber, who was born in Tyrone County in Northern Ireland.

My great-great grandmother Gustina Ryan, who was born in Michigan in 1853, married Martha’s son Jackson Barber. They had Ruby Eliza, my adventurous great-grandmother who moved to North Dakota in 1896 to teach school.

There she married John Robert Moore, a Canadian Irishman. And they had Gustina Moore, my Irish grandmother who became Gustina Solberg.

My Irish-Norwegian mom got an English name – Spaulding.

By the way, it sure is a lot of work to change your name in the 21st century at age 30. It was Mooreifying all the name change paperwork there was to do – marriage license, social security card, driver’s license, passport, bank, credit card, checks, health insurance, dental insurance, car insurance, car title, voter registration, employment documents... not to mention email and social media.

Good thing I love my new name and was excited to take it on. My one question is if the Williston Herald newspaper reader who said she would like to read a book written by me will be able to find me when I do. But whether she does or not, Spaulding will always be a part of my writing – and my family – history.

This week I will be celebrating my husband’s grandmother’s birthday with her – she was born on St. Patrick’s Day. She isn’t Irish – but she married into the Moores, too. And it will be my first St. Patrick’s Day celebrating as Mrs. Moore. So Irish.

Now that is vogue.

Is more government the answer?

A

round the country, people are upset about stagnant wages, fewer hours worked, globalization, ever-growing entitlements, wasteful government spending, VA waiting lists, you name it. We must ask, “Is more government the answer to fixing these problems … or is more government the problem?”

In Lawrence Lindsey’s new book, “Conspiracies of the Ruling he believes Legislator Class,” the Ruling Class has failed us Lingo however well-intenLinda Runbeck tioned it may be.

Elites in government are trying to run our lives, help us with every problem, he says, and have amassed too much power over the people.

They’ve made some problems worse.

He argues that redistributing the wealth of top earners through increased taxes and spreading transfer payments to those unable or unwilling to work has made the problem of inequality worse. The rich, in order to pay fewer taxes, changed their behavior by working less, saving, and sheltering more wages. “So the rich got poorer by their own choice, but the poor got less in benefits.”

Government has weakened our nation by creating dependency.

Abraham Lincoln warned: “In all

that the people can individually do as well for themselves, government ought not to interfere.” Yet, with programs of free food, free cell phones, free housing, free health care and more, government destroys the work ethic while expanding its own power. Meanwhile, the non-government entities of our society lose the capacity to do for ourselves and our communities.

MnSURE exemplifies failings of big government. MnSURE has spent nearly $400 million since 2013 creating a still-flawed Byzantine website (erroneous enrollments of 17 percent). It disrupted people’s existing health care, forced them unto a government health plan (only four choices) which, for the self-employed, unemployed, and small businesses increased premiums, co-pays and deductibles by 50 percent and more. It also forced people, without notification, unto Medicaid, resulting in liens on their property to recover costs when they die.

When 12,000 child care providers were coerced into a government union by the Dayton administration, they fought back. The union had nothing to offer them, but wanted the increased membership clout and the annual dues. Fighting off powerful unions was costly and intimidating for care-givers in licensed child care centers, churches or home-based family businesses.

Fortunately, a judge ruled the Governor’s action unlawful. When the eventual vote came, an overwhelming 72 percent of providers voted no.

Elites run the Met Council, a hotbed of planners who will reshape how we live, where we live, and how we transport ourselves. Their Thrive MSP 2040 plan will severely limit the number of single family homes in the suburbs, driving up the price; it will increase multi-family housing in the suburbs, requiring housing densities of five to 10 units per acre. It will spell out for each city how many units should be affordable. There will be few new roadways because we’ll be using transit. Thrive 2040 was approved in 2015 by the 17-member appointed, unelected Council, which has been given the authority to tax.

You’ve heard about public schools for 4-year-olds, but in the not-toodistant future, you’ll hear the education establishment call for schools for all children 0-5. This is how government plans to fix the achievement gap. Minnesota is already spending $900 million biennially on various child care assistance and early childhood learning programs to serve children under the age of 5. A system without parental choice, without parental involvement and paid for by taxpayers is one more example of expanding government for the sake of government.

In summary, be skeptical of government solutions and any promise that, by spending more money, government can fix these things.

Cougars in Schwan Cup; wrestlers impress to the max It seems that we are going from dropping the puck to rounding the bases in a very early fashion this spring.

Whether the early warm weather is a case of climate change, a normal happening in a long cycle, or just pure luck, few are complaining.

Waiting for that basketball tourney snow storm?

Not this year folks.

I think that maybe warm weather is caused from all the hot air that's been generated by our campaigning politicians.

But that's another story. A sad and shameful tale.

Cougars in Schwan Cup But before winter melts away we have interesting hockey news from home and down the street.

The field for next winter's Schwan Cup has

been finalized.

A total of 32 varsity teams will be divided into four divisions - Gold, Silver, Bronze and Open.

The Gold Division will play at Ridder Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

Other divisions will play their first two rounds at the Schwan Super Rink at the National Sports Center in Blaine. Championship games for all divisions will be played on New Year’s Eve at Ridder Arena at the U of M. Centennial is set to play in the Gold Division, along with Burnsville, Eden Prairie, Edina, Hill-Murray, Minnetonka, St. Thomas Academy, and defending state tournament champion Wayzata.

Mahtomedi is in the Silver Division, along with Anoka, Bloomington Jefferson, Breck, Buffalo,

Cretin-Derham Hall, Mounds View, and St. Michael/Albertville.

Blake, Bloomington Kennedy, Cambridge, Greenway, Hudson (Wis.), Minneapolis, and Rogers are in the Bronze Division, and Chaska, Chisago Lakes, Mankato East, Marshall, Minnehaha Academy, Princeton, Simley, and Spring Lake Park in the Open Division.

The specific game schedule and brackets will be announced in the fall.

Hockey Day in Stillwater They're already working harder than a fore checking forward on a penalty kill at our good neighbor to the east's territory.

Stillwater is set to host next winter's Hockey Day Minnesota. Some of the details were announced last week including

the news that the city will construct a rink at Lowell Park in downtown Stillwater. It will be in sight of the lift bridge and the St. Croix River.

Our local teams will surely take part in the huge mite tournament of over 100 teams that is planned. This year's Sticks in Stillwater mite tourney lured 58 teams and more than 600 participants.

A game pitting former Minnesota Gophers against ex-Wisconsin Badgers is planned, as well as a game featuring former NHL players.

Peterson's crew dominates A special shout out to first-year head coach Steve Peterson and the entire Centennial wrestling family for another superior season.

At Concordia College in Moorhead, Centennial Senior High graduate Charlie Aus just capped his collegiate career with a solid senior season for the men's hockey team.

Aus appeared in 23 games for the Cobbers this winter, finishing with a pair of goals, 13 assists,

Three varsity gymnasts were named to the NWSC All-Conference team: All-Around—Andrea Gessner; Bars—Madison Dorn; and Floor—Kylie Binder. Additionally, Binder and Gessner were also named to the All State Teams in Floor and Vault respectively.

At the State Tournament held on Feb. 20, Gessner placed 6th in the Vault with a score of 9.65, and Binder was 16th in the Floor with a 9.45. Both will be returning for the 2016-17 season.

Other student/athletes that stood out this winter include boys' basketball player Tyler Peterson, who returned from a knee injury late in the season and immediately began burning up the nets.

Gabbie Hughes had almost 50 goals for the girls' hockey team, and Anneke Linser and goalie Anne Juergens also had super seasons. Freshman wrestler Emily Shilson narrowly missed a berth in the state tourney and placed third at 106-pounds in the section, and junior gymnast Andrea Gessner finished sixth on the vault at the state meet.

The Centennial Girls Gymnastics Team has wrapped up another successful season on Feb. 25 at the 2015-16 Season Team Banquet following JV Conference Championships, Section 7AA Varsity Tournament, and individual appearances in the 2016 State Tournament. The team members not only were impressive in their athletic performances throughout the season, but also have outstanding academic achievements.

After coming oh so close to a state title last winter, the North Suburban Cougars would not be denied this campaign.

They edged AnokaHennepin for the state C1 adapted hockey title at Bloomington Jefferson last Saturday, joining forces for an exciting 6-5 win.

Sophomore center Josh Hamann had three goals, and junior Anthony Bengtson two in the title clash. Austin Motzko supplied the other Cougar marker, and goaltender

Jonathan Caliendo came through with 30 saves in the North Suburban nets.

It was the third time this year they beat Anoka-Hennepin, and they finished with an unblemished 14-0 record.

The Cougars pasted St. Cloud Area 11-5 in the semifinals. Bengtson has six goals, and Hamann four and a pair of assists.

Junior goalie Caliendo stopped 19 St. Cloud shots.

North Suburban used six Hamann goals and a trio of goals by Bengtson to subdue Burnsville/ Farmington/Lakeville

10-2 in the quarterfinals.

Caliendo had 14 saves.

Owatonna beat St. Cloud in the third place game, and South Washington beat Wayzata/Minnetonka in the consolation title matchup.

The Cougars had a trio of players earn all-tournament honors.

LINO LAKES — City administrators from Circle Pines, Centerville and Lino Lakes presented updates on business and residential development at a Quad Area Chamber of Commerce event March 3.

Circle Pines City Administrator Jim Keinath reported recognitions of fiveyear anniversaries of local businesses — it recognizes businesses every five years from their opening dates.

This year's longest standing recognition was Circle Pines Dental, at 35 years.

to recognize them,” he said.

Keinath reported no new business buildings in the city, although a few businesses have come and gone within buildings.

“We are a pretty developed city,” he said.

“We have been very stable with businesses.”

Keinath also reported on the new CenturyLink cable access coming in this year. CenturyLink will be available to about one-third of all Quad community members in the near future and will expand over the next five years.

“Seven cities in North Metro cable have provided an alternative to Comcast,” said Keinath.

Centerville City Administrator Mike Ericson reported the City Council is considering a 108-unit four-story apartment building by Boatworks Commons. Ericson said the city is open to development.

“Three-quarters of the city is developed, but we do still have raw land,” he said. “We are trying to pretty much get Centerville on the map. We are right up the freeway. We got dirt.

We still have available blocks to put houses.”

Ericson cited the Eagle Brook Church offices as one of its biggest commercial assets. He said the northeast metro multicampus church

Lino Lakes City Administrator Jeff Karlson reported an increase in economic and residential development. Two new residential subdivisions opened last year.

Gracewood Senior Living also opened.

Lino Lakes is also considering a 10-acre residential development to be added to the Legacy at Woods Edge project.

The development would include 115 townhomes.

Another development north of Centerville Road and west of I-35E

is also being considered.

Mattamy Homes may build over 800 homes in a 360-acre area.

“Rooftops bring commercial development,” Mayor Jeff Reinert told the chamber.

Lino Lakes opened three new restaurants in 2015 – Elwoods, Tasty Asia and Fiesta Cancun.

Karlson also said an additional location of Fiesta Cancun and Don Julio's are expected to open this year.

Lino Lakes is also planning on building a veterans memorial.

The city plans to donate land for the memorial.

Lexington fines former Carbone's owners

LEXINGTON –— In October, an undercover and underage patron came in Carbone's in Lexington and asked for a beer.

He was there on assignment from law enforcement on a routine liquor license compliance check. He handed an employee his driver's license and was then given a beer. “[She] probably wasn't looking at the license, and then served the underage patron,� said City Attorney Kurt

Glaser. “Maybe [she] kind of just glanced in the general direction of it and then served the beer.�

The employee was fi red within minutes.

But she didn't show up for her court date. A warrant will be put out for her arrest.

The owners have since sold the business, and the city fined them $1,000 on Feb. 18. “They are still the ones responsible for the events which occurred in October,� said Glaser.

The previous owners, Chris and Theresa Diebold, attended the

City Council meeting Feb. 18 at which the issue was discussed.

They addressed the council. “Us as owners of Carbone's spent a lot of time — we were very diligent in training our employees to watch for underage people coming in,� said Chris. “I know this person in particular — well, anybody for that matter that we hired — they go through a 10-day to twoweek training course. “Unfortunately, we can't be there whenever someone serves a drink to a patron,� said Chris.

“We were on our way to the restaurant when we found out about this. Two minutes after this happened she was terminated.�

The owners said they drilled their employees on carding and often patrons were upset when they were carded, especially when they were about 50 years old.

Alcohol accounted for only about 10 percent of sales at Carbone's. They didn't like being blamed for the violation. “It makes us look like we are not doing our job as owners,� said Chris. “It is frustrating.�

But Mayor Mark Kurth assured them the council didn't think they were bad owners, but they needed to levy a fi ne in order to be consistent.

It was Carbone's second offense in three years under the previous owners. The penalty under city ordinance is a $1,000 fi ne and/or a five-day suspension. Since the restaurant was already under a new owner, the City Council voted to fi ne the Diebolds $1,000.

The Diebolds said they wanted the council to consider a lower fine

since they had sold the business before the yearlong liquor license was up. But Kurth said that was a separate issue. “We did it for the others, we have to stay consistent,� said Kurth. “I've got to recommend we do the $1,000.� “It will come back,� said Councilwoman Carin Payment. “And bite us,� fi nished Councilman Kim DeVries.

The council voted unanimously to levy the fi ne of $1,000.

Lexington discusses possible police pull-out

LEXINGTON — The Lexington City Council discussed the possibility of pulling out of the Centennial Lakes Police Department in 2021 at a workshop meeting March 3.

The council discussed when to survey its residents about their satisfaction with current public safety service, including its contract with

Centennial Lakes. Lexington would have the option to pull out of the police service in 2021 once its bond contract is up.

The council had been planning to survey residents in 2018, but at the workshop meeting Mayor Mark Kurth asked the council whether it should take a survey earlier rather than later. “Do we want to consider moving that up to 2016 or 2017?� said Kurth.

“I don't know if it does more harm than good to start it earlier — to make the determination earlier or later to whatever route is taken.�

Kurth said the purpose of the survey would be to get an idea of what citizens would like. “I want to know if the citizens are happy with the services provided, with the taxes paid,� he said. “If everyone is happy with what they are paying and getting, there is no issue.�

Kurth declined to comment on what other options the council would consider for police service if residents did want to pull out of Centennial Lakes.

Finance Director Tina Meyer suggested staff fi rst do research on the work involved to take a survey before deciding when to take it. The council agreed with that suggestion.

CIRCLE PINES CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Circle Pines City Council took the following action at its meeting March 8: • Awarded a street project bid for the East Golden Lake Road project to LaTour Construction. There were nine bidders.

The engineer’s estimate was $2.9 million and LaTour’s low bid came in at $2.6 million. The same company performed work for the city in 2010 and 2014.

• Approved Ehlers to assist the city in sale of bonds for its water, sewer, street construction and North Metro TV service. The fi nancial advisors will advertise for bids and present them to the council March 22. The bonds include $3.49 million for utilities and street construction, and $2.6 million for North Metro TV. Nick Anhut, municipal advisor for Ehlers, told the council it would be

getting low interest rates as a city. “In the event there is some sort of shortfall in the utility or in the assessments, the city is essentially pledging your tax levy to make up the difference to bond holders,� Anhut said. “Bond holders have less risk, and in trade-off for less risk [it] means they are willing to offer you lower interest rates, or the lowest interest rates you could achieve in the market.�

• A male was arrested for DWI in the area of Lake Drive and Pine Drive Feb. 29. An officer had observed his vehicle driving outside of road lines and appearing to be lost. The male was later released to his family.

• A burglary was reported in

the 10 block of Park Drive March 1.

• A hit-and-run accident occurred at the intersection of Keith Road and Lake Drive March 2. The suspect was found in the 100 block of Keith Road and was arrested for 2nd degree DWI, DWI over .08 and hit-and-run.

Teacher charged with criminal sexual conduct on administrative leave, reported Jim Skelly, Anoka-Hennepin School District director of communication.

The Anoka County Sheriff's office received a report of the complaint March 8 and arrested Sonnenfeld that evening. He posted bail and was released March 10.

The complaint states that in a forensic interview with the girl, she reported that Sonnenfeld touched her genitals multiple times while she stood next to

him at his desk to receive help on math and science problems. The complaint reports that the girl said she stopped asking him for help “so that he would stop touching her.”

The complaint reports the child “decided to talk about what happened so that her chest and stomach wouldn't hurt anymore.”

If convicted Sonnenfeld could face up to 25 years in prison and $35,000 in fi nes.
