Teachers plea for help from school board

First grade teacher Bruce Woznak said Centennial teachers need support sooner rather than later. “(This) is not to put anyone on the spot, it is not to place blame on anyone; we just want you to hear our voices and know where we are at,” Woznak said. “We are looking for ways to work with the administrative staff and school board to alleviate some of the pressures and stressors that we face every day in our classrooms, for not only us, but our students.”

Woznak, joined by a board room full of teachers, recently visited the school board to share an update during open mike on what teachers are facing this year. Woznak is the president of the union, or Centennial Education Association (CEA).

“In my 30-plus years of teaching and working at Centennial, I have never seen staff this stressed, this exhausted, feeling as defeated as they are feeling right now. I see tears on a daily basis.

Sometimes many times a day,” he said. “There is a definite possibility that we will have buildings that lose 20-30% of their licensed teaching staff. That is not good for Centennial, that is not good for kids.”

Virtual expo ‘brings learning to life’ in preschool classroom Preschoolers at Centerville Elementary are exploring the world, thanks to technology. Their experience just might help persuade officials that the World Expo should come to Minnesota in 2027.

For nearly 200 years, World Expos have been a gathering place for connection and have served as a platform for the countries of the world to showcase new ideas and innovations and address/craft solutions to global challenges — together.

The first World Expo took place in London in 1851.

Expos have been held in France, Australia, Italy, Spain, Canada, Japan, Portugal, Germany and more. The expo was last held in the United States in New Orleans in 1984. The U.S. has now made it to the top five countries on the list for 2027. The five short-listers are now going through a yearlong process of pitching their countries and why they should host the next event, scheduled for 2027-28.

Elementary, grew up learning about expos from his grandmother. This year, he was cat-sitting for his neighbors while they attended the in-person event in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. After returning from their trip, his neighbors mentioned that he should check out the virtual experience.

The event in Dubai was supposed to take place in 2020, but was postponed to 2021-22. “They were worried it was going to be canceled, so they developed an online version,” Carlson explained. “I thought I could use it in the classroom as a learning tool.”

The expo began in October and runs through the end of March. (Carlson is hopeful the website will stay live so people can continue to explore the world after the official event is over.) The expo features 192 country pavilions. While exploring those pavilions, you can learn about architecture, science, inventions, technology, culture, food, language and more.

Centerville Elementary students read their way to Final Four Ninety third-grade students at Centerville Elementary are heading to the NCAA Women’s Final Four—for reading.

Students competed with other schools in the state, racking up reading minutes to pave the way to the Final Four Read-Off competition.

Students will be honored at a celebratory event in Tourney Town on April 1 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Students are participating in Read to the Final Four, a nine-week literacy challenge aimed at creating a lifelong love and interest in reading for students across Minnesota. The competition is sponsored by the NCAA, Women’s Final Four and the Minnesota Local Organizing Committee.

During the competition, Centerville students have participated in special reading events involving flashlight reading, reading under their desks in forts, and in “reading cafés” in the classrooms.

“It has been so encouraging to see our students ask to read whenever they have extra minutes, and when they’ve completed their books, they are off to the school library to check out more,” said Stacie Ebnet Dietz, third-grade teacher who is leading the initiative at the school. “For the three, third grade teachers, we have all commented that seeing our students exceed their original reading stamina minutes and maintain focus on their books is absolutely incredible,” she added.

This is the second time the NCAA has hosted this event for third grade classes across Minnesota. “Centerville Elementary participated in 2018 during the Men’s NCAA Final Four, landing in round of 32, and that was remarkable,” said Dietz. “This year our students knew that we could surpass that previous record and we set our goal for making it to Tourney Town to be in the Final Four schools.”

The final round of reading minutes was due March 28 to clinch the champion title. As of press time,

Centerville Elementary students have read a total of 764,297 minutes, averaging 140 hours per student.

“I am very proud of our thirdgrade students,” said Mike Macken, principal of Centerville Elementary. “Their dedication to reading and watching them progress through the brackets has been amazing.”

The competition began Jan. 10 with 6,300 students in 102 schools participating. On March 24, Centerville Elementary was announced as one of the Final Four. The Centerville Elementary Cougars are up against Hill City Elementary, Hill City Public School District; Liberty Ridge Elementary, South Washington County Schools; and Cornelia Elementary, Edina Public Schools, vying for the championship title.

Strategic plan: ‘Making this vision and this roadmap come to life’

After a nearly six-month process, the district is now ready to begin implementation of its strategic plan. “(This) is the culmination of a lot discussion, work, from classroom to board room,” Superintendent Jeff Holmberg said.

School Board Chair Suzy Guthmueller added, “A lot of hard work, a lot of meetings, a lot of nights went into this.”

At the end of September, the school board directed district staff to update its strategic plan, which was last implemented in 2016. The plan identifies a mission, vision and strategic directions/goals.

“This has been a process that has had approximately 18 meetings, stakeholder feedback, focus groups … We have continued to get feedback from our constituents, staff, students, families, about the experiences we want to keep in Centennial Schools

and the experiences we want to bring to Centennial Schools,” Holmberg explained. “This sets the vision, the pathway.”

According to the strategic plan, the district’s mission is, “By providing highquality educational opportunities, emotional support and social development, Centennial School District prepares learners for excellence in the future.”

Its vision is, “Centennial School District is a welcoming environment where all students, staff and families belong and will: provide innovative, personalized, rigorous, and relevant educational opportunities for each student; build and strengthen relationships including partnerships with the community to offer educational programs and opportunities for all.”

“I think it is really important that we recognize that for people to belong, they need to be welcomed no matter where they are from and no matter where they are

as people,” School Board Member Kathryn Timm explained. “In addition, for people to belong, they need to be included. That means inclusive staff, inclusive student groups and organizations and curriculum.

“I think that’s really important as we move forward out of the pandemic, out of the difficult conversations that we have had to have in the last two years, that we focus on our goal of making sure that we all belong,” she noted.

Timm thanked everyone for their hard work on the strategic plan, but said, “We are not done.”

Guthmueller added, “A strategic plan is great, but the implementation is the most important.

We have a lot of work to do to try to make sure that this strategic plan is implemented well and that everyone in the district feels connected … There is a lot of pieces in this strategic plan and the implementation will start immediately. We can get to

work and start to hopefully make a change and make a difference.”

Determining your debt-to-income ratio is valuable asset

If you are concerned about having too much debt, University of Minnesota Extension suggests you determine your debt-to-income ratio (DTI).

It compares the amount of money you pay toward meeting your debt commitments and the amount of money you earn in take-home pay. By calculating this ratio, you can determine how much debt you can safely handle.

Calculating your DTI ratio simply starts with a list of monthly debt payments — only the payments made to repay a lender for money you’ve borrowed. Your monthly expenses — groceries and rent — aren’t part of the DTI. Nor is your home mortgage.

Credit card debt, auto loans, student loans, medical bills and others that require a monthly payment should be on your list.

Add up that debt and calculate your net income.

Next, divide the total amount of debt payments per month by the monthly net income. You likely will get an answer that is less than one, perhaps 0.35 or

0.23. You multiply that by 100 and that determines the percentage of take-home pay is used for your monthly debt payments.

Financial experts suggest a DTI ratio of 14% would be favorable. Other sources say you might be able to handle double that number.

This formula can be used to plan a method of reducing debt or making a purchase using credit. An extra monthly payment might put your DTI above 20 percent. If that occurs, it might be wise to wait on that purchase until your income increases or your debt decreases.

It is recommended that you be a smart borrower so you don’t wind up with more debt than you can handle. By calculating your DTI, you can estimate the effect that taking on more debt will have on you.

A group of seniors recently discussed the DTI during a weekly breakfast gathering.

“Don’t spend more than you make,” said Jim Bruder, only somewhat jokingly. He said he remembers when it was the norm to purchase a home or property for as much as 2 1/2 times your income.

“But prices have gone up so much that you can’t

say that anymore,” Bruder said.

Dick and Nancy Olen are living on their Social Security checks and her pension. “For the last six years we’ve touched nothing in our savings,” he said, adding that they are careful in their spending, which is highlighted by one holiday trip per year.

But they don’t consider it a true budget. “It’s just worked out that way, but we didn’t plan it that way,” Olen said. “We hope that one trip will be within our budget.“ Dick recalls purchasing a home in Boston for $60,000. A recent check revealed it later sold for $1.1 million.

“But it’s just not the price of houses,” Al Yanke said. “How much is the average price of a car or pickup these days?”

As Bruder suggested, don’t spend more than you earn. Extension will tell you that your DTI will provide the key numbers.

Siblings sentenced for Lino Lakes murder A brother and sister have received their sentences for their roles in a robbery that left a Lino Lakes man dead in August 2020.

Nicholas Zielinski pleaded guilty Jan. 4, 2022, to one count of second-degree intentional murder (not premeditated). His sister, Melissa Zielinski, was found guilty by an Anoka County jury Feb. 3, 2022, of three counts of aiding and abetting murder.

According to the charges, Melissa Zielinski planned and orchestrated a robbery at the home of Karl Henderson and enlisted her brother to assist. The Zielinski siblings were seen at the home just before Henderson was found dead in his bedroom. He had been shot once in the chest.

In his plea hearing, as well as at the trial of his sister, Nicholas Zielinski testified that they went to the Lino Lakes home with the intent of robbing Henderson at gunpoint, but the encounter turned deadly. Zielinski said his sister placed restraints on Henderson, but he managed to break free. When Henderson lunged for Nicholas Zielinski’s gun, there was a scuffle.

Nicholas Zielinski admitted to firing two shots, hitting Henderson in the chest once.

Melissa Zielinski was charged in September 2020 with aiding and abetting second-degree intentional murder (not premeditated). In November 2021, a grand jury indicted her on aiding and abetting first-degree intentional murder while committing aggravated

robbery. A third charge was added before jury deliberations as a lesser-included count of aiding and abetting second-degree unintentional murder. After approximately three hours of deliberation, the jury found her guilty of all charges.

On March 23, Melissa Zielinski was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Based on a plea agreement, Zielinski received a sentence of nearly 19 years in prison.

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: •An officer received a phone call regarding traffic laws in the 6500 block Langer Lane March 15. The officer provided the caller the information they asked for.

• An officer responded to a phone call regarding a civil issue in the 10 block of White Pine Road March 15.

The incident was documented.

• Officers responded to a report of a male at a business in the 6500 block of Ware Road March 15 who had previously trespassed. The male was located and a citation was issued for the violation.

• Officers responded to a snowmobile complaint in the 500 block of Birch Street March 15. The officers checked the area but were unable to locate the snowmobiles.

• Officers responded to a business in the 6500 block of Ware Road on a report of a male who was trespassing March 15. The male was located and issued a citation for the violation.

• An officer took a report of suspicious activity in the 1200 block of Main Street March 15. The incident was documented and extra patrol was provided.

• An officer received a call about a neighbor dispute in the 1500 block of Stoneybrook Drive March 16. The officer gave the complainants advice on how to handle the problem.

• An officer responded to a report of solicitors without a permit in the 7000 block of Caribou Circle March 16. The officer made contact with the solicitors and advised them they needed a permit to solicit business within the city.

• Officers were dispatched on an animal complaint the 800 block of Fox Road March 17. Officers assisted the caller with the animal and advised the caller how to prevent further problems.

• A community service officer found two bicycles abandoned in the 7100 block of Lake Drive March 17. The bicycles were entered into found property at LLPD. • An officer conducted a traffic stop in on Central Avenue and 93rd Lane March 17. An adult female driver was issued a citation for possession of marijuana.

• An officer responded to a report of a found car key in the 700 block of Town Center Parkway March 18.

The key was placed in the property room.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 8000 block of I-35E March 18. The adult female driver was cited for speeding and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

• An officer stopped a vehicle because the driver didn’t have a valid driver’s license on Main Street and Lake Drive March 18. The adult male driver was subsequently arrested and booked at jail for thirddegree DWI refusal, fourth-degree DWI, driving after revocation and possession of an open container of alcohol.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 1200 block of I-35W March 19. The adult female driver was cited for multiple violations.

• Officers responded to a call of a fireworks complaint in the 600 block of Aqua Circle March 19. No fireworks were located.

• An officer received a call to assist a local business with a trespassing employee in the 7500 block of Fourth Avenue March 21. The officer arrived and trespassed the adult male. The adult male was also cited for driving after revocation.

• An officer responded to a complaint of illegal dumping in the 700 block of Apollo Drive March 21. The officer documented the incident and provided the caller with tips.

• An officer responded to a county park on a report of a loose dog with no owner in the 7400 block of County Parkway E March 21. The officer worked with park rangers but was unable to capture the dog.

• An officer responded to a noise complaint that involved loud music being played by a neighbor in the 7800 block of Marilyn Lane March 21. The officer spoke with the complainant and the resident where the music was being played to try and mediate the situation.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An officer conducted a traffic stop near Lake Drive and Griggs Avenue in Lexington on March 16.

• Officers were dispatched to the 9300 block of Lexington Avenue in Lexington on a report of a theft March 16. Officers found a disorderly male on the property.

• An officer observed a traffic violation occur in the area of Griggs Avenue and Lake Drive in Lexington March 17. The officer ultimately conducted a traffic stop and made a probable-cause drug arrest.

• Officers were dispatched to the 3900 block of Restwood Road for a structure fire in Lexington March 17.

• Officers conducted a traffic stop for a violation that occurred in the area of Lake Drive and Woodland Road in Lexington March 18. The adult male driver had a cancelled-IPS (inimical to public safety) license status. The adult male driver was subsequently booked into the Anoka County jail.

• Officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Main Street in Centerville on a report of gas drive-off March 18.

• On March 19 officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of 72nd Street on a report of an animal trapped within a garage wall in Centerville.

• A public assist was fielded in the 9100 block of South Highway Drive in Lexington March 19.

• Police responded to the 3800 block of Minuteman Lane in Lexington on a report of suspicious activity March 20.

• Officers were dispatched to the 30 block of Pine Drive in Circle Pines March 20 regarding an animal complaint. No violation was observed.

• Officers saw a property damage accident occur in the 1900 block of Main Street in Centerville March 21.

The parties involved did not want to file a report.

• Officers received a report of a theft from a motor vehicle in the 7100 block of Peterson Trail in Centerville March 22. There are no suspects at this time.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS CLPD responds to shots fired

The Centennial Lakes Police Department (CLPD) was dispatched to a mobile home park in Lexington around 10:30 p.m. March 23 on a report of multiple shots fired. The first officer on scene heard additional shots fired.

According to Chief James Mork, information from neighborhood residents placed the location of the incident in the neighborhood just north of the trailer park (North of Woodland road between Hamline and Griggs Avenues). A possible suspect has been identified, but as of press deadline no arrest has been made. Mork said CLPD is not aware of any injuries or damage to property.

“This type of activity is completely unacceptable and very dangerous in what is otherwise a very safe and quiet community,” Mork said.

The incident is currently under investigation. Updates will be provided when additional information is available.

Multiple agencies respond to vehicle fire LINO LAKES — On March 22 at approximately 4:43 p.m., the Lino Lakes

Public Safety Department Fire and Police Divisions responded to the 2000 block of Otter Lake Drive on a report of a vehicle fire in a garage.

Officers found a fully involved vehicle inside the garage on fire and the fire had spread to the garage structure. Responding crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire before the fire spread to the attached home. The homeowner’s dog perished in the fire, but no injuries were reported.

Other agencies that responded to the scene included Centennial Lakes Police Department, Centennial Fire District, Spring Lake Park, Blaine, Mounds View Fire Department and the Hugo Fire Department.

The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation by the Lino Lakes Police and Fire Divisions.

Spring equals end of bear hibernation

Bears are now waking up from hibernation. Last week, the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department received a report of its first bear sighting of the year. The department took the opportunity to share some safety tips on its social media: • Remove bird feeders / any food

outside that a bear may consume • Secure all garbage • Clean and store outdoor grills The post read, in part, “If you see a bear, please leave it alone and allow it to continue on its journey. Hopefully, their journey takes them out of Lino Lakes.”

Anoka County Sheriff’s Office promotes 2, welcomes 1

The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office promoted a commander and lieutenant and welcomed one detective last week. Cmdr. Andy Knotz will head the Justice Services Division, which is responsible for court security, civil and transport services. Lt. Bill Jacobson will join the Administration Division, which handles responsibilities such as internal affairs, contracts and fleet management.

Detective Jeremiah Carlson will join the office in the Criminal Investigations Division.

The evil empire

T WAS PRESIDENT Ronald Reagan in 1983 who called the Soviet Union the evil empire.

What’s happening in Ukraine today is deplorable. It appears that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to recover the satellite countries that were once part of the Soviet Union.

The world watches as thousands of lives are lost and families are escaping to Poland, Romania and other countries.

As a result, Ukraine is losing its freedom, independence and sovereignty. This is a struggle of good against evil, according to Reagan.

The Ukrainian people are brave and they are fighting very hard to preserve their independence, but the Russian Army is large and their government is powerful. What happens in Ukraine will encourage Putin to continue his takeover of the former satellite countries. We need people of faith and a moral fiber to help lead world governments. Prayers are in order for our leaders. God is still in control.

AMERICANS ARE GIVING up their independence by expecting the government to do more. As a result, About the it takes more money to cover the programs.

Town Government can’t do everything Gene Johnson for us. Most of the time when they do things it’s not very successful, let alone being accountable. This is the time, Americans, to take note of what kind of a future you want to have for your family, children and grandchildren.

WITH THE INFLATION running so high, I wonder what dollar stores are going to do about changing their name. Will they be called $1.25 stores? At one time we had Ben Franklin stores.

They were often referred to as dime stores. I still remember when White Castle hamburgers were five for $1.

LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONALS are essential to keeping law and order in a democracy.

This includes a wide range of trained people from police to the National Guard.

Law enforcement deserves our support financially, in terms of recognition, and in getting the best training. They deal with so many types of issues, many dangerous, for our protection and safety.

Volunteers can be helpful, too.

Politics must be put aside and government policies must be followed to ensure regulations and laws are carried out.

SCAMS OF ALL types are growing and taking advantage of vulnerable people of all ages without regard to education or income. According to an AARP study in Jan. 2022, found people’s emotional state at the time of a encounter was a factor in becoming victims of fraud.

People listed in obituaries are targeted by scammers. Insurance scams grow after natural disasters and scammers troll dating websites for vulnerable people. My take is to refuse all calls, letters and messages from people you don’t know. If it sounds too good, it’s probably false or misleading.

Some cell phones can be set so all calls without a previous contact are declined.

OUR COUNTRY NEEDS to become energy efficient again. This would be a step in keeping fuel prices under control as well as reduce inflation in every avenue of production of consumer good.

We also have to go slower in moving away from fossil fuels. Remember when automobiles came in, we didn’t kill all the horses. Catching up on petroleum production doesn’t happen over night. We need to encourage our president to plan ahead and not lead from behind.

Budget for 2022: For two years Anoka County has delivered a zero increase in tax dollars levied. The certified levy for 2020, 2021 and 2022 were the same at $141,927,676.

Since government usually grows by 4% to 6% a year, we consider our flat budget a tax reduction especially if you figure in today’s inflation rate.

We did this by Legislator implementing a base line budgeting Lingo practice that does Jeff Reinert not assume automatic increases year over year.

Instead, each department director must justify their budget. This allows us to reduce in some areas and increase in other areas, resulting in spending the right amount and increasing service.

IT Committee: COVID taught us that connecting to internet is a necessity, not a luxury. Federal, state, county and city dollars are funding efforts to get everyone connected, but in Anoka

County, we are thinking out of the box and looking into connecting to satellite technology as well, which we believe will play a big role in the future.

Parks Committee: Some financial issues have been resolved. Bunker Wave Pool was losing $500K a year, last year made $700K. Chomonix Golf was losing $100K a year, last year made $150K. The Banquet room at Chomonix closed for COVID is now available for graduation and other parties. It seats about 100.

We don’t have a dog park in our area, but I am working on adding one. Mountain bike trails in Rice Creek County Park were updated last fall and ready for this summer.

Camping reservations at our campgrounds are now open.

We are seeking State funding for a trail connection needed for decades between Golden and Baldwin Lakes connecting to Hodgson Rd. Transportation Committee: I now serve on Transportation with better influence to get projects into our area. Lake Drive really needed resurfacing and will be completed this summer from Hodgson north to 35W and the speed limit will also be reduced from 55 to 50 mph for safety.

The Highway intersection at 35E and County J will be

completely reconstructed with full north and south access and a new bridge. We are securing the $25M in state funding and will begin this project in 2024 or 2025.

Hodgson and 85th Ave NE/ Ash Street will be completely reconstructed likely with a round-a-bout to accommodate additional traffic due to development in this area.

We are working on $163M of state and federal funding for a reconstruction of Hwy 65 from 97th to 117th with overpasses and other improvements.

Timing on this project depends on funding but there is a lot of support to finally get this done.

New Appointments: I now serve on the Board of Directors for AMC (Association of Minnesota Counties).

Statewide 17 out of 450 County Commissioners serve on this board to influence federal and state legislation. We work closely with our legislators to advise them on passing bills that help Counties do their job.

I’m also very honored to serve on the Board of Directors of the Allina Hospitals Foundation. We are in the process of raising $30M for a mental health facility that will be located at Mercy Hospital.

Find your Zen with a Japanese Maple

Years ago, I was transfixed by pictures of Japanese Zen gardens, especially those containing graceful, weeping trees that come in a variety of colors and heights. After researching these delicate I learned that the Gardners beauties, object of my affection was Acer Grapevine palmatum, the Japanese maple.

I set aside my dreams of ever having one grace my landscape Paulette when I realized that in Anoka Greenberg County, we are outside of the tree’s happy place, which is Zones 5-8.

However, a few years ago I was ecstatic to learn of a new Japanese maple species called Velvet Viking, (Acer palmatum var. dissectum 'Monfrick'). It was developed right here in Minnesota from a mature Japanese maple that a landscaper found thriving in an Eden Prairie yard. The original tree succumbed to disease, but it provided enough

cuttings to create a Minnesota-hardy (Zone 4) Japanese maple.

With its semi-dwarf growth habit and maximum height of three feet, Velvet Viking is perfect for container gardening and is compatible with gardens big or small. My yard is exposed and southern facing, so I decided to plant my tree in a large pot. This enables me to move it as needed to avoid extreme fluctuations in weather, which can create cracks in the bark that lead to canker.

If you choose to find your Zen with the Velvet Viking Japanese Maple (or another dwarf or semi-dwarf variety), here are some tips for container success: • While most literature indicates Velvet Viking can tolerate full sun in northern climates, my container tree prefers afternoon shade in July and August, along with plenty of water.

• Once temperatures routinely drop below 30 degrees and leaves begin to drop in the late fall, I give my tree a good soaking and move it to a dark, cool spot in my garage. I water once a month and prune any damaged branches once the tree is dormant.

• Keep container trees out of extreme cold. They are more exposed than in-ground plants to freeze and thaw patterns that can damage the roots.

• Once temperatures stay above 30 degrees in

the spring, move your tree outdoors to a protected area for a few hours each day until it acclimates to the sun’s rays. If your tree starts to bud before this happens, keep the leafing out cycle going by using grow lights for about six hours a day or moving it to a window where it can get some sunlight.

If you plant a Velvet Viking in the ground, find a sheltered spot where it will be protected from wind, falling ice, and excessive sun. You can further protect it from winter damage by wrapping the branches with burlap and applying approximately four inches of mulch around the base. The mulch should not touch the trunk.

Whether you keep any variety of Japanese maple in a container or make the Velvet Viking a fixture in your yard, some extra care and thoughtful placement will help you enjoy your little piece of Zen for years to come!

CENTENNIAL SCHOOL BOARD SNIPPETS • Teachers are asking the district to work together to try to find solutions to some of the issues they are dealing with this year such as large class sizes and staff retention. (See full story on pages 1 and 11.)

• The district continues to make adjustments to its 22-23 budget.

Looking forward to next school year, the district identified a need to adjust its budget to address continual shortfalls in educational funding, explained Executive Director of Business Services Patrick Chaffey. Over the past several months, district leaders, directors and principals have reviewed their respective budgets and provided options for reductions.

The latest revision is a reduction of $500,000, which was made in the areas of substitutes, supplies, long-term facilities maintenance (LTFM) and non-personnel inflation.

• This spring a new scoreboard will be installed at the middle school football field, thanks to the Centennial Youth Football Association.

• For the next three years, the school district will have an advertising sponsorship agreement with Raising Cane’s Restaurants LLC. The agreement will run from July 1 through June 30, 2025. Raising Cane’s will pay the district $22,500 ($7,500 per year) to advertise on various scoreboards, signs and other advertising materials.

• Pending approval of the district’s Achievement & Integration (A&I) Plan, the district will hire three student and family advocates. The three advocates, who will be a part of the teaching and learning

department, will support students and families in their educational experience in the district.

The district has submitted its A&I Plan to the Minnesota Department of Education for approval, which will likely take place later this spring. If for some reason the plan is not approved, the school board would need to reconsider the new positions, as some of the funding is through A&I funds.

• The district is also adding a couple of other new positions. A health services coordinator will oversee the department and provide leadership, development and maintenance of the student health services program and oversee health services employees. Funding for the position will come from the general fund.

LEXINGTON CITY COUNCIL NOTES • The Lexington Fire Department has entered into a joint powers agreement (JPA) with 40 other fire departments across the state for the purpose of purchasing public safety equipment.

Because of the agreement, the fire department will likely receive better prices on equipment such as turnout gear, selfcontained breathing apparatus and other fire safety equipment.

There is no initial cost or a yearly fee charged to be a part of the JPA. It is simply an agreement between fire departments and equipment vendors for better pricing, council was told.

• Voters will not see any changes to the city’s only polling place for 2022. Lexington’s citizens will continue to vote at the city’s one and only precinct, City Hall.

• Burnn Boiler and Mechanical Inc. now has a business license to operate at 4137 1/2 Woodland Road.

The company serves the areas of Fargo, North Dakota, and Minneapolis.

• City Heat Charities will host a charity event June 5 at Cowboy’s Saloon, now that the council has approved a special event permit. The annual motorcycle ride raises money for families in need.

Between 100 and 150 riders are expected to attend.

• Norhart, developer of Lexington Lofts — currently under construction near the intersection of Restwood Road and Griggs Avenue — will ultimately be responsible for making roadway repairs to fix damage that has been caused by construction/heavy equipment.

Council Member Kim DeVries said he has noticed some damage on Griggs Avenue and Restwood Road and wanted to know if the developer would take care of the damage, or if the city would be left on the hook to pay that bill. City Administrator Bill Petracek said that is why the city has a development agreement in place to take care of items like that.

• Formal agreements

CIRCLE PINES CITY COUNCIL SNIPPETS are not yet in place, but the city may see some new businesses come to town in 2022. Petracek explained that Lykes Boxing of Spring Lake Park has expressed interest in moving from its current location in Spring Lake Park to Endurance Fitness’ former space.

Endurance Fitness is now located in the former Lino Lakes YMCA (soon-to-be Rookery Activity Center).

In addition, a roofing and siding company is looking at moving into Cook’s Body and Mechanical, and a restaurant owner in Minneapolis is looking at the vacant Blue Collar BBQ building.

“This is all very preliminary,” Petracek said. “Don’t get your hopes up until we have a (business) license being issued and they are moving in.”

The next City Council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at City Hall.

City Administrator Patrick Antonen explained the project will kick off this week with the replacement of gas mains. A neighborhood informational meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at City Hall.

Nick Anhut, of Ehlers, explained the $4.83 million in bonding will cover 100% of the project costs. Thanks to the city’s AA-plus credit rating, Circle Pines will likely get interest rates around 2.27%. “The city is in the top 10% among all cities and counties across the country,” Anhut said.

Assessments per benefiting property will be approximately $4,900.

The next City Council meeting will be at 7 p.m.

Hughes, UMD reached NCAA finals Centennial grad was in top 3 for Kazmaier Award

Gabbie Hughes capped her fourth — but not final — collegiate season at Minnesota-Duluth at the highest levels: playing in the national championship game and being one of three finalists for the player of the year award.

Hughes, a 2018 Centennial graduate, and the Bulldogs finished as NCAA runners-up after a 3-2 loss to Ohio State in the finals March 20 at University Park, PA. They had beaten Northeastern 2-1 in double overtime

in the semifinals two days earlier.

UMD reached the Frozen Four by winning regionals at the University of Minnesota. Hughes pumped in three goals in a 4-0 win over Harvard on March 10, then delivered the go-ahead goal in a 2-1 conquest of the Gophers on March 12.

Hughes, earlier announced as one of ten semi-finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award, was named as one of three finalists on March 17, along with Taylor Heise of Minnesota and Sophie Jacques of Ohio State. The award, announced last Saturday on the NHL Network, went to Heise.

She is eligible for a fifth season,

granted to players due to the year interrupted by Covid-19, and plans to continue her education and play a fifth season, said her mother, Miki.

An Education Studies major, she will graduate in May and work toward her masters degree next year.

Hughes was named a first-team AllAmerican and first-team All-WCHA. She logged 22 goals and 37 assists for 59 points, tied for third-best in the nation. Heise led with 29-37-66, followed by UMD’s Elizabeth Giguere (22-40-62) and a tie between Hughes, Jacques (21-38-49) and Minnesota’s Abigail Boreen (25-34-59).

In her career at UMD, she has

notched 67 goals and 96 assists.

Honors in previous seasons were second-team All-WCHA as a sophomore and junior, and WCHA All-Rookie as a freshman.

At Centennial, Hughes led the Cougars to the state championship game as a senior (they lost to Edina 3-2) and led the team in scoring for five years. Both the Star-Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press named her metro player of the year. She was a Miss Hockey award finalist but again it was Heise, of Red Wing, who got the award.

SPORTS BRIEFS 2.14 goals-against-average, was named team MVP. Other awards went to Hoylo (most improved, and most complete player), Carls (hardest worker), and Van Tassel (character). Cali Cheesebrow got the youth hockey coach of the year award.

Top five scorers (goals-assists-points) were Van Tassel (25-26-51), Blair (24-26-50), Searles (19-28-47), Carls (17-23-40), and Hoylo (5-33-38).

Carls totaled 57 goals and 59 assists in three seasons with the Cougars. Van Tassel totaled 51 goals and 33 assists in his career.

Getting honorable mentions were Teagan Kulenkamp, freshman forward; Hannah Thompson, junior defenseman; and Noelle Hemr, sophomore forward.

Team awards went to O’Hara (MVP), Goodreau (offensive MVP) and Wlaschin and junior goalie Anna Peterson (co-defensive MVP’s).

Scoring leaders (goals-assists-points) were O’Hara (21-30-51) and Goodreau (24-23-47). Goodreau’s career totals were 46 goals and 30 assists. O’Hara’s career totals were 28 goals and 36 assists.

The Cougars were 18-9-1 overall and 6-4-1 in conference, and were section runners-up.

Jack Fuller, Centennial hockey goaltender, got the team MVP award after the Cougars posted an 18-6-3 record.

The 5-foot-11, 155-pound senior posted a .916 save percentage and 2.14 goals-against-average. He had a 5-0 record as a junior backup goalie with a 1.94 GAA. “It was great to have someone in the net that we could rely on when we made mistakes in front of him,” coach Ritch Menne said. “Jack bailed us out quite a few times.

Besides having success on the ice, Jack is a true leader off the ice. He is a terrific person and very popular with his teammates.” Fuller will continue his hockey career with the New Mexico team in the NAHL.

At the elementary level, there are class sizes of approximately 30, he said. In addition, special education and English Language Learner (ELL) caseloads are “off the charts.”

“We are asking for help,” Woznak told the board.

“The strategic plan does bring to light some of these issues, but they just can’t be planned as sky dreams, we have to see it acted upon. We need help with class sizes, behavioral support, mental health support, caseloads, workloads.

That’s all mentioned but it has to happen … I know it takes time, but we can’t wait, we have to put that into action right now.”

Dress collection aims to make one’s dream dress more accessible

A wedding dress for $10? You won’t find a better deal than that.

The 37th annual Press Publications wedding show will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at the Best Western Plus in White Bear Lake. The show will feature a discounted wedding dress shop.

Following rising COVID-19 concerns in mid-January, the show was rescheduled for April. Now that cases are declining and spring is in the air, it’s time for brides and grooms to start planning their weddings.

The show, emceed by Gary LaRue, will include 21 vendors covering wedding must-haves like venues, catering, officiants and flowers. Many of the vendors have continued to return to the wedding show in order to keep their business local.

Bonnie Martin of Unreal Arrangements is in her 15th year of the show and has enjoyed the wedding show’s small-town feel.

“As a smaller floral studio, I don’t necessarily want to go to the convention center and get swallowed up by large vendors. I prefer a personal interaction,” said Martin.

Small crowds and local vendors have been a draw to the show over the years, but Press is excited to bring some new ideas to this year’s show.

This year will feature a discounted wedding dress shop with gently used donated dresses that will be resold for $10. All proceeds from the dresses will be donated to the White Bear Area Food Shelf. Since a wedding dress can be a large part of a wedding budget, the new wedding shop aims to make one’s dream dress more accessible.

“At our shows, we always have brides come in every year and say, ‘Do you know of any shops who carry used or less expensive dresses?’” said Director of Sales and Marketing Patty Steele. “We’d always say ‘Try Goodwill,’ but this year we’ll have our wedding shop.”

number of dresses that have been donated so far. While she expects more are on the way, about 60 used wedding dresses have been taking up space in the Press office since late January.

One gentleman told Steele that he had lost his wife to breast cancer and said it was painful to see her wedding dress box every time he opened the closet. One day he opened up the White Bear Press and saw the wedding show ad and felt as though his wife was speaking to him to donate the dress.

“People have been excited about paying it forward and letting another bride get some use out of a dress,” said Steele.

Martin has her own way of incorporating her arrangements with the wedding dress shop.

“I’m very, very excited about what they’re doing with the used bridal dresses. I’m working on something so when brides try on a dress they can hold a bouquet with it to see the final

look,” said Martin.

With personal attention from local vendors like Martin, the Press’ wedding show will be the one-stop wedding shop for anyone trying to plan their big day.

Each of the applicants received a notice of acceptance into the Centennial School District February 15, 2022. Parents are required to notify the district of their intent to enroll by March 11, 2022. No School Board action is required. 8.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT 8.1. Approval of LTFM Revisions – The School Board must approve revisions to the Long-term Facilities Maintenance (LTFM) plan, as required by the Minnesota Department of Education. The plan was updated to reflect current projects, costs updates and realignment of future projections. Included in board packets is the updated ten-year expenditure plan. Circle Pines freshwater fish store celebrates 5 years in business

After 800 fish tanks, Iaong “Mandee” Yang said she stopped counting. Over the last five years, the freshwater fish business she and her husband Xeng “Andy” Moua started in Circle Pines has grown by leaps and bounds.

Yang and Moua first opened up Quality Aquatics Pet Store in 2016 when the pair noticed a shopfront available for lease at 9205 Lexington Ave. N. Yang remembers handling shop business while also raising their young children, who spent many hours playing in a small space at the back of the shop. But soon, the shop began to grow. The business has expanded three times since it first took up residence in the Circle Pines strip mall, and has taken over the business spaces on either side and on the end of the row.

“It turned into what we needed for our lifestyle,” Yang said. “It was a no-brainer; this was what we were supposed to be doing.”

The shop was Andy’s lifelong dream, after a childhood of raising fish, when he became an expert in how to keep a home aquarium. The shop sells only freshwater fish, as well as a wide selection of aquascaping supplies.

The selection ranges from the common tetra to harder-to-find species such as the goonch catfish or wolf fish. The aim was to provide customers with any freshwater selection they could imagine, be it guppy, betta or tropical rainbowfish.

The shop has attracted a retinue of loyal customers. Some even drive hours from out of state just to visit the shop.

“Some of the time they just come talk to us, because we’re fish people,” Yang said. “It’s really nice to have that relationship and bond with customers.” With their years of experience, members of the Quality Aquatics team are happy to provide advice on creating a healthy tank environment, diagnosing problems and recommending solutions.

“We’re just grateful that we’ve come to this point and we’ve grown so much due to our customers,” Yang said.

During the height of the pandemic, many people became interested in new hobbies that could be enjoyed indoors during times of isolation. Fish tanks not only provide a pet to care for but also can enhance the space inside a home. Yang definitely noticed the uptick in interest.

“Usually we’re busier in the wintertime because everybody is stuck indoors,” she said. “Since the pandemic hit, people were cooped up indoors and started exploring their creativity. They would come and get fish for their kids because it was a pet to take care of and it wasn’t too much of an investment on their end.”

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Power of Centennial fully funds 5 grants, partially funds another

Power of Centennial (POC) will fully fund five grants and partially fund one grant in the Centennial School District. POC, a subcommittee of the Centennial Area Education Foundation (CAEF), meets twice each year to determine where it would like its dollars to go within the community. Members meet in the fall and spring; each member commits to giving $50 at each meeting. All dollars raised are given as grants to support education in the Centennial area.

POC will distribute $3,176 to fully fund the following: • Centennial Culture Fair by Centennial Students for Change • Centennial High School (CHS) physics supplies for physics demonstrations for grades 10-12 • Centennial Area Learning Center group retreat at Fort Snelling • ECFE parent speaker sessions • World Culture Club supplies POC will also contribute some dollars to Centennial High School’s spring musical, “Into the Woods,” which requires a pit orchestra.
