LINO LAKES — Great blue herons are back. The Lake Peltier
Island rookery has been experiencing steady growth the last few years — the nest numbers remain in the 200s. Lino Lakes Environmental Coordinator Marty Asleson
reported the sheathing installed on tree trunks of the heron's nesting trees about a decade ago have been protecting their chicks from being eaten by raccoons —
and has brought back the birds. “The herons have been reproducing out there,” said Asleson. “They are coming back.”
