LINO LAKES — What began as discussions last year during budget discussions will become a reality next month as the Public Safety Department begins its rollout of a daytime duty crew for fire response.

The City Council recently authorized the hiring of seven part-time duty crew firefighters.

“Communities that utilize paid on-call staff, meaning they have full-time jobs during the day, all struggle with coverage during daytime hours Monday through Friday,” explained Public Safety Director John Swenson. “It is something that we have continued to track throughout our delivery of fire services dating all the way back to the beginning.”

Beginning May 2, six firefighters, including Jacob Bogdanovich, Benjamin Opem, Brian Pevito, Nicholas Potzmann, Charles Jenkins III and Kathleen McLaughlin, will start their duty crew positions with the hourly rate of pay of $18.66, the starting rate for part-time firefighters. All of the firefighters have completed their Fire 1, Fire 2 and hazardous materials training and certification.

“As our model has continued to evolve, and we have less cross-trained police staff, we don’t have the needed numbers of fire responders during the daytime hours,” Swenson said. “That’s why we are

Circle Pines family is ‘all for global citizenship’ said Brian Bohne, Kate’s husband, who left the Twin Cities the next day on a 29-hour flight that would take him and two others — Chuck Heile of Circle Pines and Brant Axt of Minneapolis — to start an 18-day trek to Nepal. “I’m so proud of Kate and Briza’s willingness to be in the trenches in ministering to Ukrainian refugees.”

The Bohne family of Kate, Brian and four children — son Bryce and daughters Jessica, Katrisa and Briza — is known for its worldwide endeavors. Both parents took a leave from their jobs here and taught for two years (2006-08) in Saudi Arabia and traveled to several countries — Ecuador; Dominican Republic; Mozambique, where Katrisa is a diplomat with the State Department; African countries and more, even during the pandemic.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is having a tremendous effect on people worldwide.

For example, Kate Bohne of Circle Pines has emerged from retirement to help teach Ukrainian children at Ljubljana International School in Slovenia. She is teaching intensive English to students in grades K-6. It’s the same school where daughter Briza teaches full time.

Briza’s mother anticipates teaching for six weeks following her 18-hour flight Tuesday, March 29. A school official asked for help in what was described as a “pretty stressful” situation as classes swell to accommodate Ukrainian children who have fled their country.

An explanation for those gob-smacking valuations

CENTERVILLE —The City Council brought in the experts to subdue palpitations brought on by the jaw-dropping increase in property valuations residents received this past month for 2022 property assessments.

Anoka County mailed out the 2022 valuation notices last month, along with the 2022 property tax statements. On opening that envelope, most property owners were met with the news that their property value had increased by some 25%.

Property owners with questions or concerns regarding market values or property classifications were asked to contact the assessors prior to the Local Board of Appeal and Equalization meeting.

The city's team of assessors, Mary Wells, Chris Larson and Erik Skogquist, attended the April 13 Centerville City Council meeting and annual Local Board of Appeal and Equalization public hearing to explain to all concerned what it means.

By state law, all properties must be reassessed each year and physically reviewed once every five years. The law requires that all real property be valued at market value, which is defined as the usual or most likely selling price as of Jan. 2, 2022.

This valuation will be used to allocate the 2023 property taxes.

The estimated market values set for this assessment are based on qualified sales of Centerville properties occurring between Oct. 1, 2020 and Sept. 30, 2021. Assessors use this sales information to determine individual property values.

Centerville's value adjustments are based on the 64 qualified sales that closed during that sales period. Value adjustments were made by “neighborhood” (i.e. water-adjacent, townhomes, single-family on the south side of the city versus the north side, downtown, etc.).

The total estimated market value in Centerville increased by 26.3% to $614.6 million in 2022, compared with $486.7 million in 2021. These totals include new construction value in the amount of slightly less than $9.4 million in 2022, compared to $11.4 million in 2021.

According to Anoka County Assessor's Office records, the median home value in Centerville increased by 25.44% to $359,900 in 2022. It was $287,900 in 2021.

Centerville wasn't the only community that saw a dramatic increase in home values. The Washington County median home value saw a 21% increase, and many other counties in the state reported increases of more than 20%, Wells said. “The majority of people everywhere had sticker shock this year, myself included,” she said.

Assistant Washington County Attorney appointed District Court Judge Assistant Washington County Attorney Kevin Mueller has been appointed by Gov. Tim Walz to serve as a judge in Minnesota’s Tenth Judicial District. Mueller will be chambered in the city of Anoka in Anoka County.

“I am excited to appoint Mr. Mueller to the Tenth Judicial District,” said Walz. “He is an exceptional attorney with a wealth of civil and criminal law experience that will serve him well on the Anoka County bench.

I am confident that he will be a leader in the courtroom and community for years to come.”

Mueller joined the Washington County Attorney’s Office in 2013 and currently serves as chief of the Criminal Division.

He previously held the title of assistant criminal division chief and was an assistant Washington County attorney in the Juvenile and Criminal divisions.

“I am honored and grateful for the trust that Gov. Walz has placed in me,” said Mueller. “The heavy responsibility afforded by this new position is something that I do not take lightly. While

I will miss my colleagues and collaborative partners in Washington County, I look forward to the new challenge that awaits in Anoka County.”

Mueller earned his bachelor’s degree from Miami University in Ohio and received his Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law. Mueller served as a law clerk for the Honorable Mark Rindner of the Alaska Superior Court before practicing commercial litigation at a private law firm in Chicago.

Prior to joining the Washington County Attorney’s Office, Mueller worked as an assistant state’s attorney in Chicago at the Office of the Cook County State’s Attorney.

“Kevin is the third prosecutor from our office recently appointed to the bench,” said First Assistant Brent Wartner, referring to Judge Siv Mjanger and Judge Jesse L. Seabrooks II. Both were former Washington County attorneys who were appointed to the Tenth Judicial District in 2021. “Like the ones before him, Kevin is a leader and person of noble integrity

go up more than 20%, but it won't necessarily happen, Wells said. “We expect that school districts, counties and cities will hold their budgets stable, and that taxes will also remain stable,” she said.

City Administrator Mark Statz said that it really didn't matter what the entire market did. “What matters is your relative value compared to other homes in the city, because taxes will be spread across everyone's properties, and everyone's property went up,” he said.

In other words, “the slice of the pie is the slice of the pie,” Mayor D. Love said.

There are 1,385 residential parcels in town to share the tax burden, Statz said. When setting the levy, the city looks at what it costs to run the city.

“And if it takes 2% more to run the city, that's how much the levy and your tax will go up,” he said.

As long as budgets remain stable, we just don't expect the taxes themselves to increase the way we saw in the housing market,” Wells added.

One property owner came to the podium to wonder who would make sure government entities would actually hold their budget. “I'm not convinced, based on the national situation,” he said.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Local nonprofits benefit from Greater Twin Cities United Way grant

Dream of Wild Health in Hugo and Solid Ground in White Bear Lake will receive funding from the Greater Twin Cities United Way. A total of $12.1 million will be distributed to 90 local nonprofits that align with United Way’s vision to help communities thrive regardless of race, income level or place of residence. The funding includes multiyear grants for nonprofits focused on equitable housing, food, education and the workforce; grants for partnerships between schools and businesses providing purpose-driven work experiences and increased pay for youth; and grants to support trauma-sensitive care for early childhood education providers.

POLITICAL BRIEF Strom announces candidacy for District 36A

Susie Strom has announced she plans to run as a DFL candidate for Minnesota House District 36A. Strom grew up in Coon Rapids but now resides in North Oaks. As a result of the redistricting process, District 36A includes Lino Lakes, Circle Pines, Centerville, North Oaks and a small portion of White Bear Lake.

COUNTY BRIEFS Dr. Quinn Strobl, the chief medical examiner for the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, recently presented the 2021 annual report to the county board. Of note, there were no homicides last year in the county. However, 167 people in Anoka County died from accidents, 74 due to drug overdoses, which was an increase from the previous year.

County board shows support for National Rugby Center

The Anoka County Board has provided a letter of support for the development of a National Rugby Center to be located at the National Sports Center in Blaine. The Minnesota Rugby Club, The National Sports Center and the city of Blaine are working together on the project. The National Rugby Center would be the first of its kind in Minnesota. The

center would likely attract over 360 rugby teams each year from across the United States, and as well as international players. It is estimated the development of a National Rugby Center would provide an annual economic impact of $51 million to the state of Minnesota.

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers responded to a local business on a report of a suspicious person in the 6800 block of Otter Lake Road April 5. The area was checked and the person was gone on arrival.

• An officer stopped a vehicle in the 7600 block of Lake Drive April 5 for an equipment violation and because the registered owner didn’t have a valid driver’s license or license plate. The driver was cited for driving after revocation and for displaying revoked license plates.

• While on patrol, an officer observed a suspicious vehicle on Chestnut Street and 21st Avenue South April 5. The officer investigated and determined no crime had occurred.

• An officer received a burglary report at a home under construction in the 2100 block of Heron Court April 5. The investigation is ongoing.

• An officer took a report of tampering with a motor vehicle in the 7400 block of Patti Drive April 5. The incident was documented and the investigation is ongoing.

• An officer handled a report of tampering with a motor vehicle in the 100 block of Palomino Lane April 5. The incident was documented and is being investigated.

• An officer responded to a report of motor vehicle tampering in the 7400 block of Jeanne Drive April 5. The officer documented the incident and the investigation is ongoing.

The driver was found to be impaired and arrested for DWI. • Officers received a delayed report of a vehicle tampering in the 7600 block of Palomino Lane April 5. Nothing was taken, and the vehicle was not damaged.

• An officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle for multiple traffic violations in the 8100 block of I-35W. The vehicle failed to stop and fled from the officer. An investigation is ongoing.

• An officer was dispatched to investigate a theft report made by phone in the 7700 block of Marilyn Drive April 6. The caller reported that an unknown person removed her catalytic converter from her car while it was parked in the driveway.

There are no suspects.

• An officer responded to a call of a fallen tree in the roadway in the 6100 block of Bald Eagle Boulevard W. April 6. The officer was able to move the tree off the roadway. No further problems.

• An officer responded to an injured goose in the 6800 block of Otter Lake Road April 6. The officers dispatched the goose.

• An officer responded to a report of suspicious activity in the 100 block of Century Trail April 6. The caller reportedly gave some personal information to a likely scammer who talked the victim into disclosing information. Options were given to the victim.

• An officer responded to a property damage accident on Main Street and Fourth Avenue April 6. The incident was documented and the vehicles were driven from the scene.

• An officer responded to a residential fire alarm in the 7700 block of Pinto Lane April 6. Upon arrival, the officer determined it was a false alarm.

• An officer was dispatched to a report of a license plate theft in the 800 block of Olive Street April 7.

The officer documented the incident and the caller was provided a case number.

• An officer was dispatched to a parking complaint in the 7500 block of Lake Drive April 7. The officer advised the driver of the complaint and the driver agreed to leave the area.

• Officers conducted a traffic stop in the 600 block of Town Center Parkway for an inoperable brake light. The registered owner was showing a revoked driver’s license, and was arrested for driving without a valid license and for displaying revoked plates.

• A business owner of a storage facility was concerned there was stolen property at the location in the 6900 block of Otter Lake Road April 7. No stolen property was located.

• A community service officer found a bicycle on

the side of the road in the 100 block of Apollo Drive April 7. Officer checked the surrounding area and found no problems.

• Officer responded to a call of a residential alarm in the 6200 block of Holly Drive April 8. The residence was secure.

• An officer was dispatched to a 911 open line in the 600 block of Market Place Drive April 8. The officer determined it was an accidental dial.

• Officers responded to a report of a coach bus on fire in the 8300 block of I-35E. Officers arrived to find that all occupants were off the bus. They then worked to extinguish the fire. The Fire Division arrived and took over the call.

• Officers responded to a possible grass fire in the 100 block of White Pine Road April 8.

After investigation, it was determined to be a recreational fire.

• An officer was requested to check a parking lot for suspicious activity in the 8000 block of Lake Drive April 8. Nothing was found.

• Officers responded to a structure fire at a local business in the 400 block of Park Court April 9. The Fire Division arrived on the scene, extinguished the fire and investigated the incident.

• Officers received a report of an animal complaint from a resident who was chased by a dog while on a walk in the 1400 block of Sherman Lake Road April 9. The resident stated this is an ongoing concern. The case was forwarded to a community service officer for follow-up.

• Officers received a report of found property in the 7800 block of Sunset Avenue April 9. The property was placed into evidence.

• A community service officer was dispatched to investigate an animal complaint regarding a dog bite in the 1400 block of Sherman Lake Road. The report was taken and the owner of the dog was cited.

• An officer responded to a report of smoke in a house in the 2100 block of Whitetail Ridge April 9. The Fire Division responded and the source of the smoke was identified. There were no further problems.

• An officer responded to a two-vehicle property damage accident in the 7100 block of Otter Lake Road April 9. No one was injured, and a state crash report was completed.

• Officers responded to a residential area on a report of underaged consumption in the 6400 block of Langer Lane April 9. The area was checked and citations were issued.

• An officer was dispatched to a noise complaint in the 6600 block of East Shadow Lake Drive April 10.

The parties responsible agreed to lower their noise level.

• An officer responded to a call reporting fraud at a bank in the 7900 block of Lake Drive April 11. The incident was documented and is being investigated.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers were advised of a walk-in report at a base in the 3800 block of Restwood Road in Lexington April 6. Officers took information regarding a property damage accident that occurred a week prior.

• Officers were dispatched to a report of theft in progress in the 7000 block of Progress Road in Centerville April 7. It was ultimately determined to be a report of damage to property.

• Officers were dispatched to a disorderly male in the 3800 block of Restwood Road in Lexington April 7.

• Officers were dispatched on a report by phone regarding the location of a stolen item in the 1700 block of Center Street in Centerville April 7.

Officers were able to locate the item and return it to the owner.

• Officers responded to a phone call report of damage to property in the 10 block of Hillcrest Lane in Circle Pines April 8. The caller advised her house was vandalized by unknown suspects.

The estimated damage was $200.

• An officer conducted a traffic stop near Restwood Road and North Highway Drive in Lexington April 8. The driver was cited for not having a license.

• Officers were dispatched to a noise complaint in the 8900 block of Syndicate Avenue in Lexington April 9.

• Officers received a phone call regarding property damage in the 8900 block of Hamline Avenue in Lexington April 9. There are no known suspects at

this time.

• Officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Minuteman Lane in Lexington on a 911 open line April 9. Officers did not locate any problems.

• Officers were dispatched to the 10 block of Indian Hills Drive in Circle Pines April 9 on a delayed report of a property damage accident.

• Officers stopped a vehicle in the area of Lake Drive and Albert Avenue in Lexington April 9.

The passenger was arrested on a warrant.

• Officers were dispatched to the area of Twilite Terrace and North Road in Circle Pines on April 10 for a contained dog. The owner was located.

• Officers were advised of a person waiting to turn in found property at base on North Highway Drive and Patriot Lane in Lexington April 10.

• Officers were dispatched to the 10 block of South Pine Drive in Circle Pines for a property damage accident April 10.

• An officer observed a traffic violation on the 10 block of Shady Way in Circle Pines April 10. A short pursuit ensued and was then terminated.

• An officer took an informational phone call from the 0 block of Shady Way in Circle Pines April 11.

• An officer was dispatched to the 9400 block of Lexington Avenue in Lexington for a dryer on fire April 11. The fire was extinguished.

• Officers were dispatched on a phone call reporting a stalled vehicle in a parking lot in the 7000 block of 20th Avenue in Centerville April 11.

• Officers were dispatched to the 9100 block of Hamline Avenue in Lexington on a report of suspicious activity April 11. Officers did not locate anything suspicious.

• An officer observed two individuals in the 1700 block of Main Street in Centerville who were suspected of a burglary in Morrison County. The suspects were taken into custody and transported to Anoka County Jail to later be picked up by the Pierz Police Department.

• An officer conducted a traffic stop near Civic Heights and Civic Heights Circle in Circle Pines April 11. A verbal warning was given.

• An officer observed a traffic violation near the intersection of Lake Drive and Pine Drive in Circle Pines April 11. Verbal warnings were issued.

• Officers responded to the 9300 block of Syndicate Avenue regarding an accident in Lexington April 11. No injuries occurred.

•Officers were dispatched to the 7200 block of Old Mill Road in Centerville April 12 regarding an animal complaint. Contact was made with the dog’s owner and was advised of the complaint.

• An officer observed several ordinance violations in the 7100 block of Robin Lane West in Centerville April 12. The case is still active.

• Police were dispatched to a report of damage to property in the 900 block of Lexington Avenue in Lexington April 12.

moving toward a daytime duty crew to ensure that we have needed human resources to respond to our service demands.”

Once fully staffed, the city will have duty crew coverage Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The goal is to have three part-time firefighters on during those hours as a part of the duty crew in addition to one other fire staff (deputy director or fire lieutenant) during those hours.

Ten part-time duty crew firefighters are included in the 2022 budget. Swenson explained that the first two weeks on the job will consist of a lot of training and onboarding, so full implementation of a duty crew response won’t happen right away May 2.

“This will continue to evolve as we try to get to 10 part-time firefighters,” Swenson said, adding that the department has selected three additional candidates from a second round of interviews to move to the background investigation phase. He said it is likely there will be an additional round of accepting applications and interviews in the near future.

ome of the words we use to describe eating, like consume and a healthy, balanced diet are also appropriate when describing how and where we get our news and information.

While preparing for an upcoming website redesign a few years ago, I decided to try and harness the perspective and experiences of some of the young reporters and editors (all under the age of 30) working in our newsroom at the time. As an information omnivore, I was hoping to get some inspiration and maybe discover some innovative and interesting websites. Instead, I found out that none of the four employees — that I questioned in an informal gathering of information — visited websites to get their news. They all said that they got their news from social media feeds. I was surprised and a little disheartened, but accepted the information and moved forward with the redesign, figuring that our Angle of website audience was, in varying degrees, a combination of different View demographics. The one request I had Paul Dols at the time, as a way of harnessing the exposure, was that when Press articles were shared on social media they would also be linked back to our website.

Personally, I’ve never liked the idea of an algorithm or anyone deciding the content and source of the news I should be consuming. In the intervening years since my impromptu newsroom questioning we have experienced contentious elections and a worldwide pandemic. There has also been some backlash and ethical questions aimed at the negative affects of social media, but it still continues to be a dominant force. Thanks to silicon valley insiders who were willing to speak out, fundamental functions of social media organizations, including Facebook, have been revealed to be based on algorithms designed to exploit addictive behavior, not provide useful information.

The old adage of “You are what you eat” can also be used as a metaphor for media consumption. In an article in the Brag, an online news site based in Sydney, Australia, Rys Hope provides some specific examples of the news diet metaphor including “Catchy headlines act as addictive sugars, confirmatory articles mirror comfort food, and opposing viewpoints are like the detoxifying kale smoothie that is so easy to push away.” Whether you’re referencing a news feed, a buffet or an ala carte menu, once you start thinking about the food and media metaphor, the logic can be applied in a variety of ways. I received “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” as a gift years ago, and I still periodically think about some of the findings in the book. From the journalistic point of view, I’ve always respected the way the author Michael Pollan approached the subject of the impact of our food choices with a sense of discovery, not just as a way to support an agenda or preconceived notions. The importance of finding out how our food is produced and where it comes from is a concept we can use practically on a daily basis and can also be applied to sources for news.

Some of my duties here at Press Publications include overseeing the flow of content and overall functioning of the website. When readers occasionally encounter problems on the site, I’m thankful that they care enough to let us know and help trouble shoot and I’m sincerely grateful that they’ve made the choice to be a subscriber. As the current subscriber campaign proceeds, please be patient. We’re still working on streamlining the process. Sometimes it can be confusing, but the first step to any interaction on the website is the creation of a user account. Gearing up for spring gardening It’s never too early to start preparing for the gardening season – even if there’s still snow on the ground. Whether you grow vegetables or flowers, in containers or in the ground, there’s almost always work to be done. While the weather determines when certain tasks should (and often, can) be completed, there’s plenty to do early in the season to keep you busy.

April April is the perfect time to finalize your garden plans and layout, especially if you plant in the ground or in raised beds. If you’re looking for new ideas, there are loads of resources available to help with plant selection and garden design.

April is also a great time to sanitize any tools and pots you plan to reuse from the previous year. Sanitizing your tools is crucial in helping to prevent the spread of any diseases that may have been

present the prior season.

• If you had issues with diseases or pests last year, discard any soil left in your pots and sanitize the pots thoroughly.

• If you had no issues, it is generally safe to reuse soil for a second year, but you should mix in fresh soil for rejuvenation.

Some perennials and shrubs should be cut back in early spring. If you’re unsure, research the plants in your yard. Cutting back perennials or pruning shrubs at the wrong time of year could be detrimental to their health or productivity.

Late spring is also a good time to split perennials as needed. Make sure the ground can be worked enough for you to transplant them, or pot then in containers until the garden is ready for planting.

By mid-April, most tender annual crops like peppers and tomatoes should be started indoors. Always follow the instructions on seed packets for proper planting. Once the snow has melted, you can start direct sowing spring crops like radishes and peas, since these vegetables can handle chillier temps. If you live outside of Anoka County and Zone 4, refer to the seed packet for guidelines.

May May is a good time to start weed management, whether you’re using chemicals, applying mulch, or utilizing another method. Starting early and staying on top of weed control will reduce weed pressure on your yard and garden, leading to healthier, happier plants.

Late May, or when you are able to work the soil, is the perfect time to direct sow summer vegetables, plant perennials and summer bulbs, and start fertilizing.

It’s also a good time to plant annuals, as long as overnight temperatures stay consistently above freezing. Since many annuals do not tolerate frost well, a good rule of thumb is to wait on planting them until at least Memorial Day. As the temperature goes up, so does the amount of garden chores. If you’re anything like me, I bet you can’t wait to get started. Happy gardening!

• CenterPoint Energy Resource Corp; Aquarius Water Conditioning Inc.; Arrow Sign Company; and Binder Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. have all been granted licenses to do business within the city.

• Interest rates have come in a bit higher than originally estimated for the general obligation bonds issued for the 2022 street project. The city received five bids. Council approved a resolution providing for the issuance and sale of $4.64 million in general obligation bonds, series 2022A. The bonds will be repaid over a 15-year period and have a true interest rate of 2.7495%.

A month ago, Nick Anhut, of Ehlers, projected that the city would receive rates closer to 2.27%. “We have been seeing rates climb,” he explained.

In the last 15 years, the city of Circle Pines has bonded for $35 million worth of street improvements.

City Administrator Patrick Antonen said the project has begun and is going very well. “They are installing gas right now, and trees are coming down,” he said. “It is going pretty smoothly so far.”

BIPOC Play it Forward: ‘By the community for the community’

Two 2016 Centennial graduates have launched a nonprofit to help make hockey a more welcoming sport for all cultures.

“After the George Floyd murder in 2020, I knew that I wanted to somehow be able to tie a racial justice movement into the hockey world, because that is one area that I felt I could make a difference in immediately,” explained Erik Jamison-Ekeling, who grew up playing hockey and was a team captain his senior year of high school.

Jamison-Ekeling, of Lino Lakes, began reaching out to his former teammates and his friends on social media asking if anyone had used hockey equipment sitting around that they would be willing to donate.

“I wanted to redistribute that (equipment) to folks who haven’t had the same access or opportunities to play hockey, whether for economic reasons, racial reasons … or being pushed out,” he said.

A former hockey player herself, Risha Lundgren saw Jamison-Ekeling’s post and not only wanted to donate some of her and her sister’s used equipment, but wanted to find out more about his efforts. “I was really passionate about what he was doing, and I thought it was awesome,” she said.

Lundgren, of Lino Lakes, told Jamison-Ekeling she wanted to get involved and the two dived right in to establish an organization called BIPOC Play it Forward, which officially gained nonprofit status in September 2021.

“Growing up in this community and playing in this community from my perspective of being a person of color, I would have loved to see more representation, or at least more representation advocated for coaches, or see more players that looked like me on the ice,” Lundgren recalled.

“I think that that there is still a long way to go within the game to get to that level of acceptance of all cultures, and I think that a big part of that is the fact that the barrier to entry is so high. I think that one of the things that we are trying to do is to get rid of some of those factors, or at least to mitigate some of those factors, so that people have the opportunity to at least try (the sport).”

Jamison-Ekeling added, “We want to eliminate some of those financial and kind of political or racial barriers … Eliminate the stigma that hockey is kind of a white person’s sport — because ultimately, the goal is that sports should be a

community for everybody to be a part of.

“We are just trying to make sure that Centennial and the hockey community together have an embracing effect rather than driving people away if they don’t come from a background of being involved in that sport.”

One of the nonprofit’s missions is to collect donations of hockey gear and distribute it to people who may not be able to purchase expensive equipment.

“We have been collecting donations and, unfortunately, because of COVID-19, we really haven’t been able to distribute a lot of it … Not being able to host events has really been a barrier for us,” Lundgren explained.

“That being said, it’s also been somewhat of a blessing in disguise as far as being able to set up the logistics of our nonprofit, so we’ve been able to do a lot of the paperwork and things like that required to get this started, CONTRIBUTED so there is a silver lining there.”

She has signed with Augustana. “Helene has proven her dominance both at the high school and travel ball level, and will transition well to the collegiate level,” said Augustana coach Gretta Melsted. “She is a fierce competitor. At the same time, it is apparent how much joy she has playing softball.”

LINO LAKES CITY COUNCIL SNIPPETS • Resident Melissa Miller hopes the City Council will remember that they are also residents of the city when making decisions about developments going forward. She expressed her disappointment with the ongoing Nature’s Refuge development behind her property.

“There used to be nice growth of trees before a field that was something I always enjoyed looking at and seeing. The builders have taken out almost all of those trees, so not only do I get to see the development that is going to be right behind me, but they have cleared it out so I can see it very clear,” she said. “I’m a little surprised that the plans are three houses 150 feet behind my property line. That’s very disappointing to me.”

She added, “You guys are here by the people for the people, but I want to remind you that you are also the people. I’ve always felt that Lino Lakes was a small community. I felt that we were looking out for each other. I just ask that maybe in the future instead of making decisions from the chairs that you sit in, you put your chairs in the houses that you are affecting and maybe think about how you could possibly keep those trees there or do something to preserve the houses that are already your residents.”

• Mayor Rob Rafferty reminds residents that no formal plans have been submitted for the area northwest of Lake Drive and Main Street. A couple of residents recently emailed the council asking which council members were in favor of the project and when the project would be up for public comment.

“We really don’t have any comments to make on that at this time. Nothing has been proposed in any way, shape or form. A concept plan has been shared with the council and many boards, but outside of that we have heard nothing,” he explained. “Nothing has formally come across the board as far as any additional communication on that particular project.”

City Administrator Sarah Cotton said city staff would reach out to the residents to let them know what the process would entail if a proposal were to come forward.

• Eric Heu is the city’s newest police officer. He took the oath of police service April 11. A Century College grad, Heu joined the city of Lino Lakes Public Safety Department in July 2021 and completed his field training program in February 2022.

• The city will continue to participate in the Anoka County Regional Economic Development Partnership. The purpose of the partnership is to market and promote economic development within Anoka County. Participants include Anoka County, Connexus Energy, North Metro Chamber

of Commerce, and all 21 municipalities and townships within Anoka County.

The city of Lino Lakes has agreed to contribute $1,220 for 2022, an increase of $27 from its contribution in 2021.

• Ali Lukin-Sobolewski will serve as the activity center coordinator for the Rookery Activity Center.

Lukin-Sobolewski holds a bachelor’s degree in recreation and tourism from Winona State University. She worked for the city of Lino Lakes from 2016 to 2018 as the recreation supervisor and has been the recreation coordinator at the New Brighton Community Center since 2019. She will start in the position May 2. Her hourly rate of pay will be $30.66, the starting step of the current sixstep wage schedule.

• Businesses that hold on-sale liquor, on-sale wine, on-sale beer, on-sale club and Sunday sale licenses will not have to pay license fees for another year.

For the past two years, the council has approved fee refunds or waivers in recognition that these on-sale intoxicating beverage establishments were impacted by mandated closures and the COVID-19 pandemic in general.

The mayor and council members Christopher Lyden and Tony Cavegn were in support of waiving the fees, but council members Dale Stoesz and Michael Ruhland were not.

At a work session earlier this month, Stoesz said he would prefer to see the fees discounted. Ruhland said he was also in support of a partial waiver, but not a full waiver.

“I think it’s very important that we support our local businesses in any way we can, and this is a step that we have taken the past two years,” Cavegn said. “A lot of these businesses have not recovered from COVID-19 yet, and I think this is one thing we can do to help them.”

Rafferty added, “I think all of (these businesses) are getting their feet back underneath them, and I think this is very helpful.”

• Lino Lakes resident Sharyn Eddleston has donated $1,000 to the Public Safety Department’s K-9 fund in honor of her husband Gene Eddleston, who passed away March 6 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. A letter she wrote to the department stated that as a longtime resident of Lino Lakes and the daughter of a police officer, she wanted to give back to the community of Lino Lakes and law enforcement.

• The city will hire seven part-time firefighters for a daytime duty crew. (See full story on pages 1 and 15).

• Paid On-Call (POC) Fire Lieutenant Jesse Fronek has been promoted to POC Fire District Chief.

Fronek started as a POC firefighter in 2013 with the Centennial Fire District. He joined the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department in October 2017 and was promoted to POC fire lieutenant in February 2020.

Director of Public Safety John Swenson said, “He has clearly demonstrated through his work ethic … that he is willing to take on challenges and has a can-do attitude, not only responding to calls but in training and helping others learn from him.”

• City staff continue to prepare to open the doors of the Rookery Activity Center. Most recently, the City Council approved a code of conduct, policies, hours of operation and 2022 rental rates for the birthday party room, multipurpose room and gymnasium.

The next City Council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 25, in the council chambers.

There will also be a work session immediately beforehand at 6 p.m. in the community room.

such a tangible way. it’s as simple as ‘do what you love and what you are good at wherever you are.’ I never would have expected this to happen, and I know I am not alone in doing things with great love.

“Wherever you are, consider who is around you. Who is the other? Who are the foreigners?

Living abroad for about seven years and traveling quite often reminds me how grateful I am when I am invited in — socially, emotionally — or perhaps even into a family and (their) home. The invitation makes all the difference.

“And one more thought: people are people.

There are Russian mothers (of soldiers) and all kinds of citizens that are protesting the war and demanding it stop. Unity and love will help us get through and help us heal,” she said, then continued. “Okay, actually one more thing — Ukraine is the most highlighted right now.

But it is not the only story of devastation. Let us remember the other refugees and minorities

around the world. Human rights belong to everyone. I say this with deep respect and love. Kate Bohne of Circle Pines is coming out of retirement to help We love Ukraine, and we love the world. May we teach Ukrainian children at the Ljubljana International School in Slovenia, where her daughter Briza Bohne teaches full time. figure out how to love better and better.”

The proud parents will tell you all of their children have worked summers in Language Immersion Camps, where Brian served as dean in locations including Brazil, Switzerland and China.

“That’s one of the things we do,” Brian said. “We traveled to five continents and a dozen countries.”

The tourism business, he said, had “dried up” and “we went where we were the only visitors and they appreciated our business.”

Meanwhile, his wife is busy in Slovenia, having packed two large suitcases with materials she believes can be used by the Ukrainians forced to flee their country.

Kate, 66, most recently taught adult education in Osseo. She ended her retirement to join Briza, who has also taught in international elementary schools in Kazakhstan, Albania and Bahrain.

That’s typical of this family. Jessica is a Spanish teacher in the Minnetonka area. Bryce has taught Social Studies in Nigeria, Morocco, Philippines and Costa Rica. He is now back in Northeast Minneapolis as an educator at Emerson Spanish Immersion School. He also runs his Gusto Trips company that takes travelers to Israel, Palestine, Jordan and Egypt.

Kate was asked about her thoughts regarding the children having to flee from Ukraine.

On the topic of Ukraine, “it’s unimaginable,” Kate said. “It’s not only these children leaving their home. It’s these children fleeing war-torn cities, leaving their fathers and uncles behind as they go toward an unknown future. My students are brave and beautiful. All of them. And the newcomers — I’m just so glad they are with us. It’s not easy to adjust. But it is deeply good.”

Briza said, “My mother is now teaching with me in an elementary setting, but just a few years back I was fortunate to teach alongside her as she taught English to adults.

“She absolutely lights up when she’s telling stories or acting out a concept to make it more understandable for her students. I love her quirkiness. Humor helps students relax and learn and remember more, and her deep love for people.

My mom is intuitive and wise in the way she sees people, and finds the most creative ways to help students reach their goals.”

Educators reflect on situation in Ukraine John Newton, who hails from Cambridge, Minnesota, serves as director of the Ljublana International School in Slovenia. Teachers from his home state are among his staff members.

Briza Bohne is a full-time teacher at the elementary school. Her mother, Kate, is helping out at the school during an anticipated six-week stay. In addition to Briza’s regular Slovenian students, students who have fled neighboring Ukraine have joined her classes, which have recently grown in size. Kate’s help in teaching English to those Ukrainian students is appreciated.

Newton and Kate Bohne recently reflected on the situation with the Quad Community Press.

Q: What are your thoughts on the children having to flee their country, and their reaction?

Kate: “It’s a day-to-day thing, perhaps hourto-hour. Kids who have faced extreme trauma like war can suddenly feel overwhelmed by the smallest thing in the classroom, or completely deny anything has happened to them. Their environment has changed very quickly, and a sense of control has been diminished — stress can often build up.

“Since in most cases, dad is home fighting in a war, mom now takes on the role of ‘single provider,’ which is stressful for many reasons, yet she is providing safety and comfort for her children. The children often find comfort in a school routine — and we are determined to provide a sanctuary for them.”

Newton: “As the head of the school, I couldn’t

be prouder of our team at LIS. Not a soul at our school planned on war breaking out two borders away 40 days ago. This fact challenged us to put our values to work, especially empathy and kindness. These students have incredible stories that have brought many of us to tears. What do children see and hear when exposed to war?

Drawing pictures, playing music, journaling, talking and, yes, during mathematics, science and physical education, too; we watch and listen.

We receive more than we could ever give.”

Q: As an adult educator who was retired, what do you think of teaching again?

Kate: “It’s been different for me to teach small children, but I find it quite delightful.

Children seem so naturally resilient to new conditions and surroundings. I admire them a lot.”

Q: What is it like teaching alongside your daughter Briza)?

Kate: “I’m very proud of her, as she has risen to many challenges this year, with an evergrowing classroom. I’m sure that ‘mom watching me work’ can be challenging, so we have to be careful to wear separate hats … We are both so busy — her with the regular curriculum, and me to teach intensive English to most grades means we don’t have a lot of time together, but we get to debrief at the end of each day, which is helpful.”

Q: Do you have an idea of how Slovenians feel about the situation?

Kate: “Slovenians generally have opened up their hearts and homes, and provided financial support for the many families moving to their

country. Of course, there are differing political opinions on what is happening in Ukraine, but providing homes, clothing and education must be done regardless of nationality.

“I worry a bit for the Russian families who could be discriminated against because of their Russian leader, even though almost all are not supportive of Putin.”

We've been teased with a few periods of sun but it would be nice to string 4 to 5 days of it together. This past week the jet stream spent much of its time well to our south, keeping daytime highs 20º colder than normal. If you've ventured north, you might have found yourself in the middle of a few good snowfalls. Warmer weather is forecasted for this time period but rain is expected to accompany it. Local area lakes are ice free.

Readers may have seen some information circulating on social media that Crisp & Green is coming to Lino Lakes.

The fast-casual salad chain, which has been around since 2016, recently announced 10 new locations in Minnesota, including: Lino Lakes, White Bear Lake, Mankato, Prior Lake, Roseville, St. Cloud, Brainerd, St. Louis Park, Duluth and Rogers.

Lino Lakes City Planner Katie Larsen said she has yet to hear anything about the Lino Lakes location. White Bear Lake City Manager Lindy Crawford also confirmed that no one on city staff is aware of a Crisp & Green coming to White Bear Lake.

A representative of Crisp & Green said the news is true and not a rumor, but would not comment on any specifics about locations or when doors could open for business.
