LEXINGTON — Many residents visited the Lexington City Council meeting May 19 to share their opinions about an ordinance amending the city code to include parking and driveway restrictions. After a seven-month process, the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended the council pass an ordinance to amend the city code to include performance standards under Subdivision 22 (Parking). “The main focus of the whole ordinance is to provide more orderly parking on people's property and get them to not park on their
front lawns,” said City Administrator Bill Petracek. “This is one of the biggest complaints we have at City Hall.” Mayor Mark Kurth said so far this year he has received over 50 complaints on this topic. The new ordinance will affect approximately 50 properties, according to Petracek. The ordinance spells out many specifics regarding parking and driveways, but some of the main points include: • An off-street parking space shall be at least 9 feet wide and 20 feet long. • A driveway may not exceed 24 feet in width and may not exceed the width of a garage plus a SEE LEXINGTON CITY PAGE 3
Longtime teacher leaves his mark on district BY SHANNON GRANHOLM STAFF WRITER
CIRCLE PINES — A teacher who has dedicated his time and energy to the Centennial School District will retire from the classroom at the end of this school year after more than 35 years of teaching. English teacher Mark Quinlan started working at the high school in 1978. Beyond the classroom, he served as the speech coach and theater director and was an integral part of getting the Performing Arts Center built. Over the years, Quinlan has seen the district transform. “When I fi rst started, we (Centennial High School) were grades 10-12 and had around 500 students total. I used to know every kid in the graduating class; now I go to graduation and I only know them if I have had them in class or in speech/
theater,” he said. One of Quinlan's most proud moments, besides the numerous awards given in speech and theater, was when the school was deemed a Blue Ribbon School, now known as a National School of Excellence, in the 1986-87 school year. A National School of Excellence must demonstrate a strong commitment to education excellence for all students. “It said that we did what we did very well; we were innovative and served our kids very well. That was a neat thing to experience,” he said. Quinlan said he enjoyed his job all of these years because of the kids. “It keeps a person young when they are working with kids every day,” he said. Quinlan added that he enjoyed watching the students transform from “little scared freshmen” to “adults” at graduation, and said he would miss “classroom teaching and being
able to approach every day as a new challenge” the most. Former and current colleagues held a retirement celebration for Quinlan May 18. During the celebration, manywho attended expressed their gratitude for all that he has done for the district in his many years of service. Quinlan's former colleague Vicki Bosin started with the district as a Spanish and French teacher in 1980 and retired in 2013. She said Quinlan was the fi rst person to officially welcome her to the district. “Mark has been a colleague, advisor, listening post and a friend. He has dedicated his whole life to students and to helping them improve in this field,” she said. Bosin added that Quinlan is very good about keeping in touch with his students after they graduate.
