Good afternoon and greetings family members, friends and Centennial Graduating Class of 2022. This is a big day for each and every one of you. You have worked hard and accomplished much to get to this point.

For the next several moments I want you to think about someone who has supported you and been there for you while at Centennial Schools and on this journey.

At some point in your life you joined Centennial Schools. Whether that be in early childhood or preschool, elementary school, middle school or high school. You are on a journey and Centennial has been part of your journey. You met many people along the way; met new friends in class, clubs, or activities, learned from teachers and counselors, were supported by paraprofessionals, greeted by school office staff, food service, custodians, and brought to school by bus drivers.

Whether you knew it or not, all of these people helped to create an experience in Centennial Schools to support, nurture and challenge you to be the best you could be.

As you think specifically about a person or individuals, perhaps it was a staff member; a teacher who encouraged you to do your best and at the very least, turn in your homework;

Centennial High School began offering Minnesota Bilingual Seals and World Language Certificates to students at the beginning of 2022. So far, 44 students have studied six languages, including Arabic, Bulgarian, French, Japanese, Spanish and Vietnamese. Thirty-one certificates were earned, along with one Gold Seal in Spanish by senior Tatum Leibke. (Juniors who earned certificates this year can retake the exam next year to try for a Gold Seal.)

Northeast metro area is ‘bear country’

“If you live in Minnesota, you live in bear country.”

That is the first message visitors will receive when they navigate to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ “Living with bears in Minnesota” webpage. This broad statement may come as a surprise to those who think of bear country as somewhere “up north,” but recent bear encounters in the metro area are evidence to the contrary.

Forest Lake area DNR wildlife supervisor Scott Noland has been at his post for the past eight years.

He said in that time, he has fielded calls about bears every year. When asked how many live in the area, he acknowledged that the statistic is not known, but generalized, “we don’t have many down here.”

Pertaining to the number of complaints and reported sightings, Noland pointed out that “one bear can generate a number of calls and concerns.” He said people call him for many reasons, including out of curiosity or alarm, or simply to report what they saw.

Though Noland said, “We’re definitely getting more reports,” he does not draw any conclusions from that alone. In fact, he said an increased number of citizen reports may be attributed in part to a proliferation of electronic surveillance, namely doorbell systems that record images.

To help get a handle on a bear population that seems to be expanding southward and westward, the Minnesota DNR launched a bear tracking app on its website in 2018. It is an interactive feature that allows citizens to report bear sightings that occur outside of what is considered the primary bear range.

A quick glance at the map reveals dozens, if not hundreds, of reported sightings in Anoka, Ramsey and Washington counties this year.

Most involve single bears, but some include cubs, namely one cluster of sightings in the Forest Lake area that appears to be a mother with multiple cubs.

While black bears are naturally shy and wary of people, they are often motivated by food to venture closer to homes and human activity.

For instance, there are more oak trees (acorn producers) in this area, which may cause some bears to push farther south from their core range, especially in a year when other natural food production is low.

Noland explained that was the case in 2021, which probably put many bears at a disadvantage going into hibernation and who woke up extra hungry this spring. When this is the case, they may roam extensively trying to make up for their monthslong calorie deficit. In the event that they do venture closer to people, bears will often find easy, calorie-

rich food sources like bird feeders and garbage containers.

Those bears that are addicted or otherwise dependent on human food sources become unnaturally habituated to humans. That is when they become a danger to themselves and us. For one thing, more time spent near humans increases the chance they will be injured or killed by vehicles.

Other conflicts occur when they become bold enough to approach and/or break into buildings for food, which increase the chances for physical confrontations with pets and people. Because of this, those that become “nuisance bears” are usually euthanized. Trapping and relocating has been found to be largely unsuccessful, since bears will travel hundreds of miles to food sources.

This reality gave rise to the mantra “a fed bear is a dead bear,” and underscores the importance of preventing bear-human interactions altogether.

Noland said it would be best for people to mind the basics: “The main thing is to make sure they don’t find food, so they keep moving through.”

That includes taking down bird feeders, bringing pet food inside and keeping garbage in secure places.

He also mentioned “hazing,” which is essentially making noise and otherwise trying to maintain a level of fear of humans.

Noland also wants folks to be concerned about their own safety. “(People) need to understand they are wild animals, and to respect them. Back out … watch from a distance.”

Memories made with my dad

F

ather’s Day is right around the corner. It’s a day to honor all fathers even if they have passed away.

I am lucky that my father is still in my life. He turned 80 in April and can still drive, fish and go to the casino. He has a few health problems and calls it, “a general wearing out process.”

He didn’t like it when he couldn’t bowl anymore on his weekly Tuesday night league. He was in that league for over 30 years.

I am one of my dad’s three daughters.

Since he didn’t have a son yet, we girls were thrown into the world of sports. We were playing little league when there were not many girls playing sports at Noelle’s the time. There wasn’t any sport my dad wasn’t good at. I remember when he beat Notes my brother-in-law at ping pong using a hockey puck as a paddle. It was pretty Noelle Olson funny.

He also was invited to play in a Pro-Am golf tournament one year and played with Nick Price.

I know that was a highlight of his life because he’ll tell that story to anyone who hasn’t heard it.

We were dragged to softball tournaments and Thursday night games. We didn’t always watch the games, but had fun at the park and hanging out the 5-8 Club.

We girls went on to play tennis throughout college and my dad never missed a match. It always felt good when my dad would watch me. He wasn’t one of those parents who is too vocal on the sidelines. He gave me words of encouragement. He did the same to my kids when they played sports.

For a few years, my dad worked as a softball umpire in the Twin Cities metro area to make money for us kids to have new school clothes. My mom wouldn’t let us go to his “umping” games. We kept begging to go and finally got our way. We only went once because people were yelling “colorful metaphors” to my dad. We didn’t like it. He kicked some of the players and spectators out.

Looking back on it as an adult, my dad did the right thing.

I remember when I was in third grade and I couldn’t do a homework assignment because I didn’t have a ruler.

My dad went to the store late in the evening to get me a ruler. Believe me, this was a big deal because my dad never went to the store (unless it was to get a fishing license or fishing tackle).

Fishing with my dad Ever since I was a little girl, one of my favorite things to do is go fishing with my dad. He taught me how to fish as soon as I could walk. I’ve loved it ever since. We did most of our fishing at our cabin on Big Wood Lake in Grantsburg, Wisconsin. Our family vacations and weekends were spent there growing up and I wouldn’t trade that for the world.

We would have fishing contests and wonderful conversations. My dad would come back fro m every fishing outing and write down what happened in his fishing log. I still love it when we fish across the lake at Luther Point Bible Camp in the early morning. There is a huge cross on the point that is both peaceful and spiritual. And the fishing is not bad either once the campers are gone for the summer.

I didn’t know it at the time but those days on the lake taught me more than anything I could learn in school. He taught me history, math and how to treat people. I remember one time he specifically warned me about bullies. He said, “If you stand up to a bully, they will back down.” He was right. I’ve dealt with bullies throughout my life and do not tolerate them. I’ve realized that it doesn’t matter how old you are, they keep coming.

My dad has been there for me every step of the way.

His guiding hand on my shoulder will be with me for the rest of my life. Happy father’s day to all of you dads, grandfathers and uncles out there. May you feel appreciated, respected and forever loved.

As always, the library has prepared for the summer with extra events and programs for the community. Dig in to good reads and summer fun with our Summer Adventures- Unearthed! challenge from June 1 to Aug. 14.

People of all ages can participate in Summer Adventures by tracking their minutes of reading, sharing book reviews and engaging in activities that foster STEM, art, literacy and engagement.

Movers & community The primary way to participate is by registering at Shakers anokacounty.beanstack.com Matt or by downloading the free Beanstack Tracker app from the Youngbauer app store. Let a librarian know if you need a way to participate offline. Thanks to The Friends of Anoka County Library, youth under age 18 get a free book for registering, which they can pick up by stopping in at their local branch. There will also be weekly prize drawings for tickets to Bunker Beach, Twins games and the Minnesota State Fair for participating, so make sure to track your minutes and record activities throughout the summer. Adults who participate will be entered in weekly drawings for an Anoka County Parks annual pass.

For those kids and teens who have library fines, “read down” your fines through Aug. 14.

For every 15 minutes of reading recorded, $1 will be taken off the fines. Call or stop in and talk to a librarian for more information.

Reading and engaging in Summer Adventures activities with your friends and family are some ways to keep learning, discovering and having fun over the summer. Another way is to participate in free programs at the library.

From outdoor Storywalks to fun cooking classes, there’s something for everyone at the library. Check out our event calendar at anokacountylibrary.org (some programs require registration). Save the date for Wednesday, June 22 as we will be hosting The Bazillions on the Centennial Library lawn for a kid friendly rock concert.

New this year, people of all ages can participate in our Tiny Art Show. Through the month of June (while supplies last), pick up a free Tiny Art Kit, including tiny canvas and art materials at any Anoka County Library.

Artwork returned by June 30 will be displayed and voted on throughout July, with winning artwork from all eight libraries being printed as bookmarks to share with the community.

Attracting wildlife with soft landings

M

any gardeners work hard to attract birds, butterflies and other pollinators, and if we are lucky enough to play host to a keystone tree species, we have a valuable resource to assist us in this endeavor. Considered vital to an ecosystem’s survival, recognized keystone trees for our area include oak, willow, cherry, pine and poplar. With the help of keystone trees, gardeners can create a Garderner’s welcoming habitat for pollinators with “soft Grapevine landings.”

Keystone trees are Laura Brewster important hosts for hundreds of species of moths and butterflies within the order Lepidoptera. When Lepidoptera enter the pupa stage of their life cycle, they need a safe habitat beneath keystone trees, either in the leaf litter or under the roots. Most gardeners don’t realize that cleaning up leaves and digging out ‘weeds,’ around trees can create a hostile environment for the

very visitors they want to attract. In addition to a safe habitat, Lepidoptera also need a nearby native plant food supply. Gardeners can create this friendly environment by installing soft landings.

Soft landings are native plantings under keystone trees that include leaf litter and other plant debris to improve soil structure and create places for insects to hide or sleep.

They support beneficial insects such as moths, butterflies, bumblebees, beetles and fireflies. Additionally, there are many animals, such as songbirds, who rely on these insects for food; by creating a soft landing, we can also improve the biodiversity of our yards and support the larger food chain.

A common misperception is that the dry shade under trees doesn’t support desirable plants. Fortunately, in Minnesota we have many native options such as ostrich fern, wild ginger, Virginia waterleaf, false Solomon’s seal, Virginia bluebells and Pennsylvania sedge. When planning, consider bloom times, spacing, mature plant height and width, and wildlife

value. Here are some tips for soft landings: • Protect tree roots from damage when installing a soft landing.

Rather than digging, smother the planting site in the fall with cardboard covered in leaves and sticks. When spring arrives, plant small specimens or plugs starting approximately three feet from the trunk of the tree.

• Avoid adding soil or placing raised beds on top of tree roots, as oxygen is essential to healthy trees. Do not use landscape fabric, as this will prevent some pollinator species from being able to pupate.

• Water new plants thoroughly and check soil regularly to prevent drying out. Water as needed until plants are established, which takes about a year.

• Use leaves as a mulch to prevent evaporation and smother weeds.

Pull weeds by hand, and if you mow, be careful to avoid damaging the tree’s roots.

Maybe you don’t have a keystone tree on your property. There is a Chinese proverb that says, “The best

time to plant a tree was 20 years ago.

The second-best time is now.” Your efforts will be rewarded with visits from thankful insects and wildlife.

The conflict in seeking oneness

O

ver the past several weeks we’ve been confronted by the compounding traumas of gun violence, marked the anniversaries of racial injustice, and witnessed innocence, brutally destroyed while capitalism continues to corrupt compassion.

As people of faith, we’ve attempted Pastor’s to make sense of these heart shattering realities as we seek Ponderings to align our trust in God’s love with the brokenness of our world.

Ivy Huston We’ve seen evil and have begun to recognize that we are only one moment from being swept into its devastating vortex.

Our entrenched rhetoric and invasive opinions are only band-aids for the larger wounds we bear.

Our inability to do the hard work of addressing the big problems, have caused our hurts to become

too big to hold and turn us into tolerating the pain instead of tending to the conflicts these wounds have created. There is no one answer or quick fix.

Only hard work that needs to be done, together, if we are to survive and thrive as a community of God’s people.

As Jesus makes his way towards the cross, Jesus is praying that the love that God has for God’s son would be extended to include all who trust in God’s power and live in Christ’s love. Jesus prays “The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind—Just as you, Father, are in me and I in you; So they might be one heart and mind with us…So they’ll be as unified and together as we are…”(John 17: 20-23 MSG) The oneness is a reflection of what is both beyond our comprehension and yet is the embedded within us. The oneness is manifested in acts of love. Love that multiplies when shared. Love that holds us in grace. Love that stands up in the midst of injustice and holds us in our collective grief. This is love

made perfect in the trust that we hold to- trusting that God is able to transform our sin into new lifetransform our grief into compassionate action- to transform us into a greater reflection of God’s love, even when these situations knock us to our knees.

This oneness, created by the love of God, shared in Christ and extended to us, is found in the beating of our hearts and the breath in our bodies. God’s love is what opens our mouths to speak comfort- to demand change for the greater good- to witness God’s glory even as evil takes a swing at our hearts.

There are no easy answers but we have a God who knows our heartache and brokenness and still chooses to be one with us- to transform and redeem us- and to bring wholeness and healing once more.

Let us seek to be one in God’s love.

LEXINGTON COUNCIL SNIPPETS • Residents may have noticed flags flying at half-staff outside of City Hall. The sign of mourning honored Council Member John Hughes, who passed away May 30. Hughes served the city for 36 years. The City Council will declare a vacancy at its June 15 meeting.

• Residents are reminded that the Centennial Lakes Police Department (CLPD) has a prescription drug box in the lobby where residents can bring unused medication to be disposed of properly.

Each year, CLPD Chief James Mork visits the City Council to present the department’s annual report.

Here are some highlights for 2021: – CLPD had 15,976 calls for service, which represents an increase of approximately 1,160 calls.

Calls in Lexington increased by 987.

– CLPD issued 1,305 citations and gave out 4,490 verbal warnings. “We are not out there picking on people, we are just trying to make the roads safe,” Mork explained.

• Hunter Schmid is the newest temporary seasonal employee for the city. Schmid’s hourly rate of pay will be $14 per hour.

• The Hidden Oaks neighborhood (Hamline Avenue) road reconstruction project will cost $65,023, after the council awarded the project to low bidder Douglas-Kerr Underground LLC. The project area includes the Hidden Oaks neighborhood and Hamline Avenue (between Edgewood Road and 97th Lane NW).

The project will include new curb and gutter, aggregate base and bituminous pavement. The scope of storm sewer improvements is limited to adding inlets at low points where there is currently limited inlet capacity, and the replacement of inlet and manhole castings. Water improvements include replacement of select gate valves, select curb stops and adjustment of other surface features. Sanitary sewer improvements are limited to replacement of manhole castings. (The city of Blaine is overseeing the project.)

• Matthew Rivard is the new assistant manager for the municipal liquor store. His hourly rate of pay will be $25.75 per hour.

• The public works department has been directed

by Council Member Kim DeVries and City Administrator Bill Petracek to check out a manhole that appears to be starting to cave in on the southside of Restwood Road near Griggs Avenue.

Petracek explained that the developer of a nearby project would be responsible for any repairs.

• The City Council continues to hold closed sessions permitted by attorney-client privilege to discuss legal aspects of options related to the interconnected water and sewer system with the city of Blaine. Council members in closed session are also permitted to determine the asking price for, and/or to develop/consider offers or counteroffers, for the purchase or sale of parts of that system.

• The City Council also held a closed session June 2 permitted by attorney-client privilege to discuss legal aspects surrounding personnel matters that are under investigation.

The next City Council meeting will be at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, June 15 (not the regularly scheduled Thursday, June 16), at City Hall.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Otter Lake Animal Care plans expansion

U.S. Army Specialist Eric Finniginam was killed in action while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. A bench in Veterans Memorial Park in Blaine was recently dedicated to him. Finniginam’s family, including his wife and daughter, traveled from Micronesia to attend the memorial dedication.

Memorial dedication in honor of US Army Specialist BLAINE — Hundreds of community members recently gathered at Veterans Memorial Park in front of Blaine City Hall to remember and honor the life and legacy of U.S. Army Specialist Eric Finniginam.

While serving in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, 26-year-old Finniginam was killed in action on May 1, 2010.

The memorial dedication was organized by U.S. Army veteran Eric Bakken, from Blaine. Bakken, who named his daughter Finley in honor of his close friend, served with Finniginam. Bakken organized a fundraiser that raised nearly $30,000 to purchase a memorial bench.

Bakken said that because Finniginam was a new

American citizen, he did not have a place to call home in the United States.

“I would like the city of Blaine and the Veterans Memorial Park of Blaine to be Finn’s honorary home,” said Bakken. “He deserves that for making the ultimate sacrifice for his country.”

Finniginam was born and raised in Micronesia. He joined the U.S. Army with the goal of gaining U.S. citizenship. He was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, and deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. While deployed, he was awarded an Army Commendation Medal for valor for his efforts. In 2010, Finniginam passed his U.S. citizenship test and became a U.S. citizen. A few weeks later, and only a month away from

returning home, Finniginam was tragically killed in action after sustaining wounds from a rocket-propelled grenade attack on his unit.

Finniginam was thrown by the blast but assisted his fellow soldier to safety and effectively suppressed enemy fighting positions, Bakken said. “Finn died a true hero, and paid the ultimate sacrifice for a country that he believed in, fought for and was so eager to be a part of.”

Finniginam’s family, including his wife and daughter, traveled from Micronesia to attend the June 11 memorial dedication.

LINO LAKES — Otter Lake Animal Care Center, located at 6848 Otter Lake Road, has submitted a land use application for a conditional use permit (CUP) amendment. The proposed project will add a 2,850-square-foot building addition to the existing facility for exam rooms, a treatment area and a surgery bay with supporting spaces. The two-story addition will be slab-on-grade. The existing building will receive some new finish work and a new coat of paint. A parking access road and new parking lot with 22 parking spaces will also be added.

In September 2019, the Lino Lakes City Council approved this amendment to the CUP for the proposed building and parking lot expansion. Construction did not begin within one year after the date of approval and the amended CUP thus became void. The applicant has resubmitted the CUP application for review. Overall, the proposed 2022 project is the same one that was approved in 2019. Council was expected to approve the CUP June 13 (after press deadline).

With a first-round loss to the eventual champion, then two victories to quit on, and a trophy to bring home, the Centennial Cougars had another good run at the state softball tournament.

The Cougars lost to Forest Lake 6-3 in the quarterfinals Thursday morning, beat Lakeville South 5-3 in the consolation round that afternoon, then clipped East Ridge 4-2 in the fifth-place game Friday morning, at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

“It was obviously disappointing to lose that first game, but, when you can win two of three at the state tournament, two years in a row, that’s pretty good,” said coach Rick Thomas.

The Cougars placed third in last year’s state tournament and six of the top 10 graduated.

“It was a great experience, going back to state, with a mostly new group,” said Alexa Just, one of the returning starters along with Bryn Ruhberg, Adrianna Thomas and Helene Krage.

Ruhberg, senior catcher, sparked the Cougars, banging out five hits in ten at-bats, including her first career homer and a double, knocking in five runs. She made the all-tournament team.

“It’s exciting to win your last game.

Not many teams get to do that,” said Ruhberg, who led the team with a .453 batting average, 23 RBI’s and 15 extrabase hits.

“It’s not just the wins and losses,” Thomas said. “They built a great bond from day one. It’s the bonds that they will remember, many years from now.”

Ruhberg blasted her first career home run, over the left-center fence, and added an RBI single. But the Cougars had just five hits off Hannah Tong, who struck out seven, and got 11 ground-ball outs.

“We did not play well. We had four errors. You can’t have that many unearned runs, especially against a team that good,” said Thomas.

The score was 1-1 in the fourth when Cougar center fielder Lily Gilmore threw out a runner at the plate, but South’s Peyton Lang followed with a two-run double off the left-field fence, against Riley O’Connell.

The Centennial Cougars are playing in the state boys lacrosse tournament this week after defeating Chisago Lakes 14-7 in the Section 7 finals at home Thursday evening.

Centennial (14-2), coached by Jon Beach, faces No. 2 seed Chanhassen in the quarterfinals Tuesday, 1 p.m., at Chanhassen.

une marks Men’s Health Month, a time to focus on the physical and mental well-being of men. Overall good health relies on screenings and other evaluations with healthcare providers based on age, diet, and lifestyle choices, including tobacco and alcohol use.

But according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men are far more likely than women to go two years or longer without seeing a physician or other healthcare professional.

Experts don’t necessarily think men are healthier than women. Rather, men may be avoiding making medical appointments.

“I think a lot of us may have that tough man syndrome, the overall machismo mentality that whatever it is, I can power through it,” said Air Force Maj. (Dr.) Matthew Hawks, assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.

But regular appointments have proven vital for the prevention, detection, and early treatment of illness and disease.

Drinking alcohol regularly increases the risk of cancers to the mouth, voice box and throat, according to the CDC. Furthermore, alcohol consumption is a primary risk factor for liver cancer. By limiting alcohol consumption, individuals can reduce their cancer risk.

Individuals should avoid behaviors that put them at risk of contracting hepatitis C, which causes inflammation of the liver.

Hepatitis C can be contracted by receiving a piercing or tattoo in an unsanitary environment, through injecting or inhaling illicit drugs, through unsafe sex, or if you are a healthcare worker exposed to infected blood through an accidental needle prick.

Apply sunscreen

Protect the skin from exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun and tanning beds, as skin cancer is the most common form of the disease in the United States.

Simply reducing exposure can help prevent skin cancers and other damage.

This includes wearing wide-brimmed hats, applying sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, avoiding the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and wearing sun-protective clothing. Tanning beds are not safer for the skin than being out in the sun, so they should be avoided.

Get enough sleep

The importance of sleep to overall health is easily overlooked. Lancaster General Health says, while there is no specific data for sleep on cancer prevention, sleep deprivation can lead to harmful behaviors, such as overeating, drinking too much alcohol or being too tired to exercise, each of which increases cancer risk.

Emily Anderson, Centennial sprinter, closed her prep career with the two best races of her career, each earning a medal, at the state Class 3A track meet Saturday.

Anderson bolted to third place in the 100 dash in 11.99 seconds, and seventh in the 200 dash in 25.30 seconds, both personal bests, at St. Michael-Albertville.

“My goal was not to be last! I didn’t want to be ninth again,” said Anderson, who reached the 100 finals last year and placed ninth.

Anderson gave a shout-out to classmate and fellow sprint star Landen Liu, who was state 200 meter champ last year but missed this season with a pulled hamstring.

“He came to the practices and was like a coach and mentor to me all year. He helped me so much,” she said. “He was at graduation when I was running in the finals and he kept texting the coaches. Our graduation was at 5 o’clock and I ran at 5:15.”

Cougar coach Courtney Ramsey cited Anderson as a “humble, hard-working athlete” with a great drive to succeed. Ashlee Davis is her sprint coach. “We are so proud of Emily,” said Ramsey.

Anderson, also an all-conference alpine skier, plans to run at Minnesota-Duluth.

’m writing today about the three elements of a good golf swing that are rarely mentioned, balance, tempo and tension. So many people have become laser focused on mechanics they forget these have as much impact as path and plane.

There is new focus on how Tee important the feet are to the golf swing. If you can’t keep your Time balance when you swing, that Betsy Larey shot is probably not going to turn out well. Here’s a few drills to try that will help you understand what a balanced swing feels like.

First, hit balls with your feet together with a slow short swing. Once you’ve got that, swing with your eyes closed. I like this drill because it’s a great way to find your perfect tempo. I believe everyone has an innate tempo that works best for them. A lot of men swing for the fences because their goal is to hit it as far as they can. That’s a great goal, but if you don’t finish in balance chances are you’re not going to find the fairway.

Swing tempo gives each player the chance to create the proper sequence in the swing. In the perfect kinematic sequence, the lower body moves first, followed by the upper body, then arms and hands on your backswing. They fire in the opposite on your forward swing. Tempo also affects balance, so finding your best tempo is critical to creating your best swing.

The last element to mention is tension. I’ve written many times before that there is no saboteur of the golf swing than tension. The most common places it will show is in the jaw and hands. When it shows up in your hands, grip pressure gets tight and shots can go anywhere.

Is tension the same thing as pressure? I think tension causes pressure. Everyone experiences it at some point, including professionals. Some players get quick with their swing, others are tentative to the point where it looks like they are trying to steer the club.

On the course the skill that breaks down is more often than not the one that is the weakest part of your game. When your practicing, the flaws in your game are not so apparent. But when you place your game under pressure, your weakest link is exposed.

My next column will be devoted to what you can do to minimize pressure when you’re on the course.

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers received a complaint that the traffic lights at Birch Street and Ware Road were not working May 21. The Anoka County Highway Department was advised.

• Officers received a delayed suspicious phone call report in the 6900 block of Lake Drive May 31. The incident was investigated and no crime occurred.

• Officers received a delayed suspicious activity call of open mailboxes in the 100 block of Woodridge Lane May 31.

• A community service officer was dispatched to a lost property report in the 600 block of Town Center Parkway May 31. The officer spoke to the caller who reported they had lost a set of keys.

The information was collected in case the keys were turned in.

• A community service officer was dispatched to a report of two dogs running loose in the 600 block of Hickory Place May 31. The dogs were located, returned home and the owner was cited for violation of city ordinances.

• An officer responded to a neighborhood dispute complaint in the 500 block of Woodduck Trail June 1. The complainant wanted the incident documented.

• An officer was dispatched to a phone call report regarding fraud in the 6500 block of White Oak Road June 1. The officer documented the incident and provided the caller with a case number.

• Officers were dispatched to a suspicious phone call report in the 6600 block of Pelican Place June 1. The incident was documented and the citizen was provided with ways to protect himself from future suspicious phone calls.

• Officers were dispatched to a suspicious activity report regarding a Craigslist advertisement in the 900 block of Main Street. The caller was advised the advertisement was a scam.

• An officer responded to a residential alarm in the 1100 block of South Trappers Xing June 2. The officer determined there didn’t appear to be any problems.

• Officers were dispatched to an animal complaint in the 6500 block of Deerwood Lane June 2. The animal owner was given a verbal warning for the complaint.

• A community service officer responded to a report of a dead cat in the road in the 1600 block of Birch Street June 2. The cat was located and disposed of.

• An officer was dispatched to a phone call report regarding a traffic complaint in the 10 block of Elm Street June 3. The officer documented and the case is currently under investigation.

• Officers responded to a local senior living care center on the report of a verbal assault between staff in the 700 block of Town Center Parkway June 3. Officers spoke with parties involved and determined nothing criminal took place.

• While on patrol an officer stopped a vehicle for speeding and subsequently located drug paraphernalia in the 8300 block of I-35E June 4.

During a search of the vehicle, additional drugs were located. The driver was arrested and booked into jail for possession of a controlled substance.

• Officers responded to assist the Centennial Lakes Police Department on a traffic stop and arrested the driver for DWI in the 14700 block of Victor Hugo Boulevard June 4.

• An officer was dispatched to a park regarding suspicious activity in the 6900 block of Sunrise Drive June 5. The incident was documented and extra patrol was requested.

• A squirrel was found caught inside a box in the 7500 block of 20th Avenue June 6. A community service officer released the squirrel into the woods.

• An officer responded to a neighborhood dispute in the 6200 block of Red Maple Lane June 6. The officer spoke to all parties about their behaviors.

• An officer responded to a disorderly conduct report in the 500 block of Aqua Lane June 6.

The officer spoke to the involved party and documented the information.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Town Center Parkway and Lake Drive and the officer arrested the driver for tax evasion June 6.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers were dispatched to a motorist assist in the 20 block of Pine Drive in Circle Pines June 1.

• Officers were dispatched to the 0 block of Shady Way in Circle Pines regarding an animal complaint June 1.

• An adult female turned herself in for an outstanding warrant in the 4100 block of Lovell Road in Lexington June 1.

• An officer conducted a traffic stop for a violation that occurred in the area of Centerville Road and Hunters Trail June 1 in Centerville.

• An officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle June 2 for a violation observation in the area of Main Street and 20th Avenue. An adult male was subsequently arrested for multiple outstanding warrants.

• A community service officer was dispatched to the area of 8900 block of Naples Street on the report of a contained dog in the caller’s yard in Lexington June 2.

• An officer conducted a traffic stop near Lake Drive and Griggs Avenue in Lexington June 2. An adult male was subsequently arrested.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEF Lino Public Safety Department responds to RV fire

Thursday, June 9, both the fire and police divisions of the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department responded to a possible structure fire in the area of West Shadow Lake Drive and Birch Street. The Duty Crew responded to the scene quickly to find a large recreational vehicle fully involved in fire and threatening two structures. With CONTRIBUTED our paid per call staff and automatic aid partners (Centennial Fire District and Spring Lake Park, Blaine, Mounds View Fire), crews were able to quickly control the fire before it spread to neighboring structures.

a counselor who helped you plan out your future; a paraprofessional who gave you that little nudge or help; a secretary or custodian who may have greeted you or helped you with a problem.

Perhaps it is a classmate or group of friends who supported you throughout your Centennial years.

With this classmate or friend, you shared stories of things going well and things not so well.

They listened to your struggles and celebrations, you laughed together, or were just there for you when you needed them.

Perhaps it is a mentor, or coach. They were there for you; Helping you to learn or improve on an activity, listening to your questions or sharing life experiences and lessons to help you think through things.

Perhaps it was your parents or your family. They have been there for you every step of the way in your life journey. They have seen you on your best days and on your worst. Today is one of the very best days for you and for your family! They have many hopes and dreams for you as you graduate from high school and look forward to what you will become as an adult.

The relationships you have developed with all of these individuals while in Centennial will help you move into the next phase of your life and journey. Do not forget them. They will not forget you.

Continue to stay connected, lean on them, learn from them, and allow them to lean on you. As you sit here today, each of you is part of the legacy of Centennial Schools, and you will always have a connection to your classmates, the school district and our community.

As I close, I want to thank all the parents, family members, staff members, mentors and friends who are here today and have supported you to get to this point.

As the graduating class of 2022, I want you to think about these important individuals who have all wanted the best for you. When you see them, be sure to thank them for all they have done to support you!

The journey is truly just beginning. Whatever you do; do your very best, enjoy what you do, and embrace the opportunities you will experience as you go forward. You will meet others along the way.

I want to encourage you to develop new friendships, careers, social networks and families, and explore the world.

Strengthen those relationships as they are essential to supporting you as you continue on your journey beyond Centennial. We will always be in your corner. Congratulations to each and every one of you! I wish you all the very best and brightest of futures!

I spent a lot of time considering what message to share with you all today, so I turned to the internet, I did a lot of research of other graduation speeches, I thought about what witty things I could share, I even considered turning to my good old dad for advice, but when you grow up with a dad who is the superintendent of a school district, trust me, you get your fill of advice.

What I realized is that it would only be fair to share something that is not only relevant in my life but your lives as well.

So today I would like to share something we’ve all experienced, what we have learned from the past few years, and what we need to try to do moving forward.

The last few years have not been easy to navigate.

We have spent less time enjoying just being a kid and more time being overwhelmed by the amount of news we hear 24/7, we have experienced less community and more isolation, we have heard less conversation and more division, and more

universally, we have seen a change in the attitude of people. We have lost the spark that is inherently given to us as young adults, to live, to laugh, to love. Life has pivoted and we have been caught in a funk that has taken the joy out of our innocence.

Growing up, we were told that respect is not given, it is earned. Yet, in the last four years we have seen civility and respect go completely out the window.

We, as a society, seem to have forgotten how to treat one another with some common decency. Usually, adults lead us through this influential time in our lives, but we have learned to come to our own awakening. There were many times where we felt as though we could not express ourselves, where we felt powerless, and even alone.

But there were also stories of us coming together, listening to one another, turning our division into common ground, and finding a solution. We learned that we are capable of solving our own problems instead of solely relying on the guidance of others.

We rallied around each other and found ways to stay connected and support one another. We found meaningful appreciation in our lives for the simple things we took for granted. Most importantly, we figured out that to live a life of purpose we must look beyond ourselves and think about how we can affect the lives of others.

That’s great, but how do we expand upon that?

And to that I say we need more love. We need to have some more good laughs, a few more hugs, and a couple more moments where we can just be at someone’s side and say everything is going to be all right. That is something that is missing in today’s world that we need to carry forward and model to the generations that follow us.

Let’s face it, life is hard, and it is not fair. Accept that truth, because we need to stop making excuses that hinder us from doing great things. We need to believe in ourselves and avoid pitfalls like ... I can’t start this project because I am unsure it will work. I can’t finish this task because I am too tired.

I can’t get the job of my dreams because it seems too out of reach for me. We need to get out of this self-destructive mindset. Instead, we need to dream bigger. Make goals yourself, and when you obtain them, do not be content, instead sketch out your next goal, and your next goal, and your goal after that.

Also, when we do something that takes a little work to get, it makes the reward just that much better. It does for me at least. So, I stress to you all again, keep running through adversity.

So, what’s my advice, my solution for this class? It’s quite simple. We need to be the leaders we know we all are. We need to bring humanity and dignity back to conversations. We need to listen to each other and look for the best in everyone rather than looking for the worst. Simply put, we need to do better so everyone can be better. Seems daunting, doesn’t it? But it really isn’t, because we’ve shown that we have been capable of doing this through the last few years. And to start we must look at ourselves.

When you think about what’s next for us, it is simply taking a step forward. Recognizing all that we have gained.

I think the famous American philosopher, Noam Chomsky, said it best, stating, “Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, it’s unlikely you will step up and take responsibility for

Comedian Conan O’Brien once said, “There are few things more liberating in this life than having your worst fear realized. Whether you fear it or not, disappoint-ment will come. The beauty is that through disappointment you can gain clarity, and with clarity comes conviction and true originality.”

We0all have experienced a lot of disappointment in the last few years. There were many challenges to get to this point, including an unprecedented pandemic that changed all of our lives. I believe that these hard challenges are what made us the people we are today. It is through those challenges that we build resilience and character. Or as Conan put it — conviction and true originality.

If there is one thing that my high school career taught me, it’s that things never go the way we plan them to. We all love to plan out everything, but I want you to think back to when you were starting school: you didn’t plan out everything. We didn’t start kindergarten with a specific plan for how our lives would play out leading up to graduation, we were just thinking about how to get through that first day of school. It is important to be like that younger version of ourselves in the way they were able to take life day by day, moment by moment.

Living in the moment allows us to fully appreciate life. We get focused on these long-term plans, looking too far down the road in our lives and thinking, if I can just get to that moment, I’ll be happy. These big moments in life are significant, but short, fleeting, and many times, they aren’t anything like we imagined they would be. The journey to reach them is what takes up almost all of our time. The experiences that we have throughout this journey are what make our lives meaningful. Life is about the connections we develop and the personal growth we go through while striving to reach our goals.

When things don’t go the way we plan them to, we perceive it as a failure, but failure is nothing more than opportunity.

For most of my high school career, I was obsessed with trying to become a state cross-country champion. All I could think about was that goal, and sometimes it prevented me from fully appreciating the awesome journey that I had with my friends and coaches to try to reach that goal. It was only when my plans were derailed and it became clear to me that I wouldn’t be able to reach that goal, that I finally took a step back to fully appreciate the great times I was having with my friends every day in that sport.

I don’t have any regrets about failing to fully appreciate that time in my life. I needed that failure to learn this lesson. Failure is inevitable. Failure is not only inevitable, but it is necessary to be able to change for the better. If we didn’t experience failure, life would be meaningless. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to grow and fully appreciate the triumphs we have as a result of that growth.

Our paths to this day have all been different, but the one thing we have in common is that we didn’t get here exactly the way we planned to. We have all experienced failure. Life is exposure therapy. The more we are exposed to failure, the less we fear it.

We can’t resist failure, or we will never learn from it. Embrace it, and grow through it. The less we fear failure, and the less we hold on to the rigid plans of how we think life should go, the more we are able to commit ourselves to something we are passionate about and embrace our life journey. I think Robert Kennedy put it best when he said, “Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve.”
