If you have or are at risk for agerelated macular degeneration (AMD) there are vitamin supplements that may help slow it or keep it from getting worse. Anoka County Sheriff James Stuart was recently honored with a 2022 Champion for Kids Award at the National Sheriffs’ Association Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. Votes are being accepted July 13 through Aug. 7, so the time has come to vote early and often.

This is one time when you can vote every 24 hours, and we want you to. By doing this you’re helping the Best of the Press nominees rise up to the top of in their respective categories. Last week I wrote a column regarding storm damage from the recent storms. I was corrected about the statement that you have two years to fix your home. Many insurance companies have different rules. The Senate made four offers in the closing days of session. Our offers were all simple: we focused on funding for literacy, special education, and mental health. Our proposals included the original literacy funding, an additional $15 million for mental health, and a huge 6-fold increase in funding for special education. We also proposed funding early childhood education scholarships and accepted some provisions that Gov. Walz and the House had asked for.

In return, the House sent us unserious offer after unserious offer. Their first offer included about 100 spending items and hundreds of policies that increased burdens, mandates, and costs on schools.

Their offers included only a fraction of funding for literacy and special education, which were two of the top priorities for school officials this year. And near the end, they even sent an offer that included $56 million for unemployment benefits for parttime workers – a proposal so far out of left field that it literally had not even been discussed by the committee this year.

In summary, the Senate offered exactly what the schools requested: no new mandates or new policy, support for reading, money for mental health, and a 6-fold increase in special education funding.

The House, unfortunately, repeatedly sent us unserious offers. We had a real opportunity to do great things for parents, students, and educators.

But we missed that opportunity because the House was more concerned about political maneuvering than getting our work done.

pparently there is a lot of confusion about how the 2022 session ended, specifically surrounding K-12 education. As chair of the Senate’s education committee, I can help clear the air.

There are some people with insincere motives who will say the issue is funding, but it’s not. Since 2017, Senate Republicans have approved historic funding for education, including $18.6 billion in total education funding in 2017, 2% annual student formula increases in 2019, and $1.1 billion in funding increases in 2021 – including the largest formula growth in 15 years.

This year, schools gave us a simple agenda – focus on literacy, don’t add any more burdens, and increase funding for special education and mental health.

That is what we did. The Senate’s original K12 budget proposal focused solely on academics, specifically reading. It was a logical given only 50% of our Legislator decision public K12 students are reading at grade level. Our proposal included Lingo about $58 million to support Roger educators in reading instruction.

No new mandates or additional Chamberlain burdens. Incidentally, the proposal had broad support; virtually everyone agreed with it.

In the closing days of session, Senate Republicans worked to reach a compromise with the governor and House by providing another $1 billion to K12.

To give you some perspective, that is roughly 20 times the average amount of education spending in a non-budget year.

You may agree or disagree with that amount -- too low, too high -- but that was the compromise. That is the hand we were dealt so we did what the schools asked.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

PAID LETTER Clear Choice I had to chuckle at the letter from Democrat Minnesota Senate candidate Heather Gustafson, who says she’s running for “good jobs.” The last I looked, the Democrats only want certain jobs, such as government jobs or green jobs, but not jobs in mining or fossil fuels or manufacturing (which consumes too much energy) or auto sales (dealers risk shutdown if they carry too few EV models), or even small business.

They especially don’t like jobs in small private businesses (hard to control and regulate). During COVID, it was Gov. Walz who forced small businesses to close even while big box stores were allowed to remain open.

The Walz administration took a few small businesses to court, pushing them into bankruptcy. Now sky-high inflation caused by government

spending has one-third of small businesses on life-support (Wall Street Journal, July 6, 2022).

Gustafson also says she’s for “great schools where our kids can learn and thrive” (from a former teacher). But it’s the Democrats who under Walz are rewriting school curriculum to expunge academics and turn our schools into camps for socialemotional learning.

The sad truth is that under 10 years of DFL leadership, recent test results show that only 50% of Minnesota students are reading at grade level.

That’s cause for alarm, not comforting platitudes.

Bottom-line, Ms. Gustafson, our public schools have become repositories of wokeness and declining ratings. If voters don’t want such outcomes, the clear choice is our current senator, Roger Chamberlain.

I live four doors away from Clearwater Creek Park in Lino Lakes. There are no sidewalks. The road is all residential, with a strong child presence.

People from Hugo use this road as a freeway to Otter Lake Road. This late morning, I counted 73 vehicles on this road in a half hour, typical for this road. That’s an average of well over 1,000 vehicles per day. In an eight-hour day, the actual overall traffic is likely close to 1,500-1,800 vehicles.

For years, myself and my neighbors have complained to the city about the excess traffic on this road, the speeding and the overweight vehicles. The city’s replies are an array of confusing answers. Some of my favorites are: “Tart Lake Road is in the 85th percentile.”

“We are working on what to do.”

(For the seven years I’ve lived here, the city has been “working on it.”

“Overweight vehicles are not allowed to use Tart Lake Road.”

(Not allowed? The only sign is a 7-ton weight limit at both ends of the road, and there is no effective police presence on the road.)

It’s well overdue for the city to do its due diligence and report it to the residents of Tart Lake Road. Prove your due diligence has been done.

Due diligence: “Reasonable care and caution or the proper actions that a situation calls for, especially those that help to avoid harm and risk.”

Present the proof that your due diligence has been done. Show your analysis and how the analysis was done, the date, the time of day and by whom.

It is important to know that RapidPass cannot be completed prior to the date of the drive. Donors must complete the steps to redeem their pass on the day they donate. You must bring the printed pass with you.

To ensure the safety of the blood donation, all volunteer blood donors must be evaluated to determine their eligibility to give blood.

The final determination will be made on the day of your donation at the blood drive. Donors must be age 17, weigh 110 pounds and be in good health. You may donate every 56 days. Redcrossblood. org can give information on medications or health problems that may or may not affect the eligibility of the donor. No masks are needed.

Submit questions for candidate forums for local primary election

Early voting is underway for the Aug. 9 primary election. Voters can learn about many of the candidates for local offices that will be listed on the primary election ballot by way of recorded “Meet the Candidates” forums. The forums will be conducted in July by the League of Women Voters of Anoka, Blaine, Coon Rapids Area (LWV ABC).

The forums will be recorded without a live audience; however, voters are encouraged to participate by submitting their questions for consideration on LWV ABC’s website at www.lwvabcmn. org. Choose Candidate Forums from the website menu.

A forum that may be of note to Quad area readers is Anoka County Sheriff’s candidates Thomas R. Gagnon, Paul

Lenzmeier and Brad Wise. The deadline to submit questions for candidates who are running in either of those races is July 18. The tentative taping date for the candidate forum is July 21. Check back on the LWV website and with local cable channels to view the recorded forums. The LWV also plans to host a candidate forum for the general election for Anoka County Commissioner District 3 race this fall.

Additionally, many helpful voter resources to prepare for the Aug. 9 primary election are contained on the Elections and Voting page of the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office at www.sos.state.mn.us .

Topics include: “what’s on my ballot,” how to register to vote, ways to vote, and more.

The League of Women Voters Education Fund also offers many helpful resources for voters at www.vote411, including candidate responses to a questionnaire about their candidacy.

WEEKLY WAG Meet Orion, a shepherd/ husky mix. A beautiful young guy with a snow-white coat and stunning blue and brown eyes, Orion recently arrived at Ruff Start Rescue. He is just over a year old and weighs almost 60 pounds.

31st annual Fete des Lacs boasts ‘Centerville Strong’ theme

This year’s Fete des Lacs “Festival of Lakes” marks the 31st annual celebration in Centerville.

While many popular attractions remain this year, some new events have also been added to the docket. The festival is scheduled from July 12-17.

This year’s theme is “Centerville Strong.”

The Fete des Lacs committee says it came up with the idea because of the way the community came together to assist a local family after it had experienced the tragedy of a house fire. (See article on page 1 to learn more about this year’s grand marshals.)

Traditional events will appear again, such as Music in the Park, Bald Eagle Water Ski Show, kickball, softball and cornhole tournaments, fireworks, 5K/8K/Kids Run, Paddle des Lacs, KidsFest and the annual parade. The fireworks

display will take place at 10 p.m. on Friday at LaMotte Park.

The traditional medallion hunt is not happening; however, there’s a new medallion “hunt” afoot.

This year, the medallion finds YOU. The Fete des Lacs committee created small, etched plexiglass medallions, each about the size of a large keychain.

One random person at the first four days of Fete des Lacs events will receive a medallion by participating in that evening’s event. The events are as follows: • Tuesday, July 12: Opening Ceremony & Music in the Park • Wednesday, July 13: Public Safety Night • Thursday, July 14: Main Street Market & Water Ski Show • Friday, July 15: “KidsDance” Interactive DJ for families The medallion can then be turned into Centerville City Hall for a $100 prize.

There will also be a number of new events this year. Centerville Elementary will hold an open house from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 14. Attendees can see the new addition and learn about the school community and education. A KidsDance will feature a kid-friendly DJ and dancing from 6:308:30 p.m. Friday, July 15.

A Bark Party with dog-friendly activities and vendors will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 16. overwhelming and humbling in many ways,” Hilary Handahl said.

The experience itself, she says, was humbling in that it taught the family just how quickly their lives can change when it is least expected. Despite the intensity of the fire and damage it caused, family members were safe and unharmed. Hilary says the most humbling aspect of the experience has been the support and generosity they have received from the community.

The family’s neighbors took them into their home when the fire occurred while the Handahls made arrangements with extended family for temporary lodging. The local firefighters and police arrived at the scene immediately to suppress the fire and help the family navigate the tragedy and prepare for next steps.

“It was incredibly inspiring to see the team of firefighters work so hard to save what they could of our home while being covered in icicles from the residual spray of water and freezing temperatures,” Hilary said.

Meanwhile, other neighbors set into action a support system for gathering donations and gift cards to provide the family with some immediate needs such as clothes and food. One particular neighborhood family offered their home as the drop off site for all donations while they and other neighbors set to work to organize all incoming items and packaged them up for retrieval. While the Handahls were temporarily living with extended family in Blaine after the fire, they received help carpooling their kids to and from

school. Just a few days after the fire, they received a knock on the door and were surprised with generous clothing and gift card donations from the local Lions Club.

A close family friend from the community also established a GoFundMe page in the Handahls’ name, which provided the family a sustained source of donations for several weeks to help get them back on their feet. Through the fundraiser, several community organizations made generous donations to help the family deal with the tragedy.

The family’s church, Living Waters Lutheran and its members, collected donations for them as well. Last but not least, schoolteachers and administrators collected donations and also donated themselves to help the family’s cause.

Members of the Handahl family believe that one of the greatest silver linings from their experience is the lesson they have learned about the importance of helping others in need, and Hilary looks forward to teaching her kids the joys of paying it forward.

“Perhaps the greatest source of feeling overwhelmed has come from acknowledging we won’t be able to express our gratitude to each and every one of our supporters. But we have decided to turn those humble feelings of helplessness into continued motivation for helping others in need,” Hilary said.

2022 logo contest sees strong competition It seems fitting that this year’s Fete des Lacs theme is “Centerville Strong,” because the logo competition for this year was also strong.

There were over 150 entries in this year’s contest. The logo competition not only offers youth the chance to show off their artistic talents, but to have the opportunity to win a cash prize.

Students at Centerville Elementary and Centennial Middle School were eligible to participate in the contest. Logo designs were encouraged to include one of the following: • “Centerville Strong” theme • The city’s Native American and/ or French heritage • Two lakes (Peltier Lake and Centerville Lake) • Diversity of the many Fete des Lacs events

Along with having their logo featured on the festival’s 8K/5K T-shirts, posters, flyers and other promotional items, the first-place winners receive a cash prize of $100. Second-place winners receive $ 50 and honorable mentions receive $25.

For Rajewsky-Guimond, who will be a fifth grader this fall, this was her first time entering the logo contest. “I wanted to do it for fun,” she said, adding that she likes art and drawing.

Her dad gave her some ideas that inspired her design, which features a large tree, compass, tent, flowers and fireworks.

“I was really happy,” she said about when she was notified of her success. She ended up giving her prize money to her parents, who had recently purchased an iPad for her.

Makena Latcham, who will enter ninth grade at Centennial High School this fall, was excited to give the logo contest a try again.

She had previously entered when she was in sixth grade, but then the pandemic happened and plans had to change.

Latcham said she lived with her grandmother in Centerville for a few months, so when she heard about the contest, she was really excited to do it. “I absolutely fell in love with the town. I just loved it so much,” she said.

Latcham’s design is inspired by all the different things someone can do when attending Fete des Lacs. Her design not only incorporates the Centerville logo, but features a variety of events, including fireworks, Paddle des Lacs and the 5K/8K run.

“Art is my life,” Latcham said, adding that she really enjoys drawing and painting. “I love doing things that inspire me to create.”

Latcham doesn’t have any big plans for that prize money just yet and plans to save it.

“The Fete des Lacs Logo judging committee had a difficult time deciding on the final winning logos, as there were so many great artists in our midst. Ultimately, we selected entries that we felt best represented our rich community and the resources around us, had great use of color and shading and best met the contest rules as presented,” said Lonni Olson, Fete Des Lacs Planning Committee member. “We pared each school down to eight to 10 entries and took a vote on the remainder. Cougar town team with ten 2022 grads battling older foes

The Centennial Cougars town baseball team is currently in their fifth summer of operation with a roster including six original members mixed with 10 2022 graduates.

The Cougars, who’ve never posted a winning record, currently have two wins and 12 losses, including a 6-4 setback at Coon Rapids last Wednesday. The Cougars are members of the Metro Minny League.

“We actually play pretty good baseball, but, being the youngest team in our league, there is a learning curve,” said Joe Cyzewski, the Cougars manager from day one. His current roster has five players from Centennial and five from Blaine who graduated this year.

Their home field is Baldwin Park in Circle Pines, but most of their games are away, even when it’s their home game. “There are no fields with lights in our communities,” Cyzewski said. “I play home games away, under the lights, when I can.”

Top hitters so far, the manager said, are Damon Thoemke with a .429 batting average, Andy Brown with .333, and Joe Pelle with .333. Top pitchers are Caden Klebba with a 1.93 earned run average and Brown with 2.25. Klebba and Eric Charest got the wins in the team’s two victories, One highlight was Joe Beckman hitting an insidethe- park home run at CHS Field, home field of the St. Paul Saints, in an 8-0 win over White Bear Township.

Infielders are Jace Piepgras, Aiden Wilmet, Luke Carlson, Thoemke, Michael Schneider, Kyle Hastings and Brown. Piepgras, a shortstop, rejoined the Cougars this year after military service.

Karnowski, Beckman, Joe Cyzewski (the manager’s son), Ivory and John Marsh.

Asked about how the club is paying for the uniforms, baseball, umpires and the expenses, Cyzewski said, “We are self-funded at this point.

Player fees, or out of my pocket. We are looking for sponsors.”

The six players who’ve been in uniform all five years are Cyzewski, Hastings, Lindgren, Pelle, Haugen and Marsh.

Doubling as Legion players for Centennial are 2022 graduates Klebba, Ivory, Skrypek, and Molitor.

Other CHS alums on the team are Hastings, Schneider, Cyzewski and Waldvogel.

The 2022 Blaine graduates on the squad are Charest, Busch, Karnowski, Thoemke and Beckman.

Headed for college teams are Ivory (Roanoke College in Virginia), Beckman (St. Mary’s), Waldvogel (St. Mary’s), Thoemke (Augsburg), Molitor (Wisconsin-Stout), and Klebba (MinnesotaDuluth). Waldvogel currently plays for St. Mary’s.

Centennial has four former Minnesota-Morris players, where they also were nicknamed Cougars.

They are Haugen (from Blaine), Lindgren (Elk River), Wilhelm (Hill-Murray) and Vanyo (Apple Valley).

The next scheduled game is Sunday, July 17, against Champlin Park at Baldwin Park, at 2 p.m.

They’ll be at Andover on Saturday, July 23, at 2 p.m.

Overall the Metro has been one of the driest parts of the state. Northern Minnesota as well as southern Minnesota have received timely rainfalls and are faring much better. July hasn’t been much better here in the Metro as I’ve totaled under a half inch. Sunday’s rain, poorly timed, only produced 0.03 of an inch. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for rain but right now it doesn’t look like significant rain is in our future.

REFUGEE TOUR: Offers opportunity for youth to escape trauma of war FROM PAGE 1

It’s all a part of the Hope for Ukraine Youth Refugee Tour, organized by Source Minnesota.

Through urban outreach and antitrafficking efforts, Source’s mission is “to empower the at-risk and unreached to make a break from the past and build foundations for the future.”

From July 8-16, boys and girls ages 13-16 will play in the Target USA Cup, the largest youth soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere. It is held each year at the National Sports Center in Blaine.

More than 1,110 teams and 16,000 players are expected to compete.

According to Source Minnesota, the tour will give 13-to-16-year-old refugees the opportunity to come to the USA and escape from the trauma of war. The tour will include uplifting interactions to reinforce and acknowledge the value of Ukraine youth, as well as encourage meaningful international cultural exchanges with youth from around the world.

Balazhynets and his family have not left Ukraine and remain there to carry on the work of the foundation. Although he has been to the U.S. many times before, this is a first-time trip for all of the players on his team.

“The heart of this trip is to let this generation know they have not been forgotten and have support from all over the world during their time of trauma and need,” said Source Executive Director Peter Wohler.

The 17-day trip will include experiencing the USA Cup Youth Soccer Tournament along with a Midwest Tour based in Minnesota. The trip will also include Ukraine benefits, international gatherings, meetings with government officials, Source Minnesota youth leadership events, church leadership gatherings, professional sporting events, amusement parks and great food.

The players will stay in dormitories at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul while coaches, family members and chaperones do homestays. Circle Pines resident Brian Bohne has long been connected to Wohler and his vision, as Bohne was Wohler’s soccer coach back in 1989-90.

Over the years, the two have stayed in touch and Bohne felt compelled to help out.

Bohne and his family, who live on Golden Lake Road, are hosting Pastor Rudolph Balazhynets, the coach for the boys’ main soccer team, Ukraine Hope.

They will also offer up their home to the pastor’s wife, mother-in-law and two children.

Balazhynets is the director of a charity foundation Family of Christ in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, and has served those in need — including wounded soldiers and residents of orphanages — in the country’s western region for 10 years. When the

After a full-day of soccer, players enjoy trying out more sports and activities including bags, volleyball and basketball.

“(I hope) they will have a little bit of a chance to heal the trauma, recover and have a lot less stress,” he said, adding that this is the chance for the players to realize they have a chance to play soccer professionally or at a university.

Many of Bohne’s neighbors are also opening up their homes for the tour. Over the weekend, a “Bohne Bash,” or an aftergame picnic, was held so players could enjoy food and the adventures to be had on Golden Lake, including kayaking and paddleboarding.

Bohne was tasked with setting up a tour of the Duluth area for the entourage. In addition to some friendly soccer games with the Hermantown Soccer

In addition to the fun activities, Bohne said he is looking forward to helping to foster awareness and make connections. “I’ve always been one to want people to know what’s going on outside our borders and how we can care and be involved,” he explained.

“I’m looking forward talking with the people and then plugging them into the people and institutions and so forth that I know around here.”

His 6-year-old granddaughter may also be able to establish a lasting friendship with Balazhynets’ 6-year old daughter. “I just love making those young links of friendship that can really make for a smaller world and even lifelong bonds,” he said.

The tour ends July 26.
