achael Perron, Culinary and Brand Director for Kowalski’s Markets tossed together some of her favorite salads for spring. Tropical fruits like pineapple, mango and passion fruit are back in season and are a great way to add a little sweetness to your salad. “I love that Ataulfo mangoes are extra sweet and silky smooth,” said Perron.

When creating her salads, Perron looks for a balance of flavor and textures.

Creamy goat cheese, sharp red onions and crunchy pine nuts offset the sweet and tart flavors of the fruits and dressing.

Want to sub out some ingredients?

Perron recommends Israeli feta for a similar creamy addition instead of goat cheese or almonds to replace pine nuts to keep the salad’s nice crunch.

“When food offers so much for in terms of taste and texture, I crave it, making it easy to get my five-a-day servings of healthy fruits and veggies.” said Perron.

Directions:

Fresh goat cheese, such as Capra Goat Cheese with Honey 2 tbsp. Toasted pine nuts Thinly sliced red onion Freshly ground Kowalski's Black Peppercorns, to taste

Wash greens in ice-cold water; drain thoroughly in a salad spinner until very dry. Toss greens with dressing to taste in a large salad or mixing bowl. Top salad with remaining ingredients; drizzle with additional dressing to taste.

Ingredients

Pineapple and Avocado Salad

1 Lime 3 tbsp Kowalski’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil 2 tsp Kowalski’s Pure Honey 1½ tsp Finely chopped fresh mint, plus more for garnish ¼ tsp Freshly ground Kowalski’s Sea Salt 16 oz. Kowalski’s Fresh Pineapple Chunks

1 Jumbo avocado, peeled, seeded and sliced ¼ Red onion, cut into thin half-moon-shaped slices Freshly ground Kowalski’s Black Peppercorns, to taste Crumbled fresh goat cheese, such as Capra with Honey, to taste (optional)

Directions:

Use a microplane to remove 1½ tsp. zest from the lime; place zest in a medium mixing or salad bowl. Cut line in half; squeeze 2 tbsp. juice into the bowl with the zest. Whisk in oil, honey and mint until blended; season with salt and pepper. Add pineapple, avocado and onion; toss to coat. Divide salad amongst serving dishes; top with cheese, if desired.

Airway, Your Mouth and Your Life

A

pnea or poor breathing is at the top of the list of present day health care problems. It is presently being treated with either a CPAP, which is a mask and machine to force oxygen into the lungs, or with a dental appliance which pulls the mandible forward to open the airway. A newer surgical procedure called Inspire, stimulates the tongue to move out of the throat’s airway on breathing. All of these treatments treat symptoms of apnea but don’t solve the cause of the problematic airway.

Breathing involves the nose, the mouth, and the lungs. Nasal breathing is the correct way to breathe.

There are many physiological advantages of nasal breathing, including air filtration to protect the lungs and better oxygen, carbon dioxide exchange. At Lake Area Dental, nasal breathing is assessed and referrals are given to the appropriate ENT’s when necessary, to establish optimally healthy nasal breathing.

Breathing is also about your mouth, making it a dental issue. Simply put, if the tongue doesn’t have enough space to occupy, it can occlude the airway. Young people sometimes adapt but with aging apnea worsens. This is a major cause of poor breathing and apnea which can shorten life spans and cause many medical conditions.

When assessing very young children, it is possible to predict which children will develop or have apnea.

Children who present with a small “V” shaped upper arch, a retruded lower arch, an open bite, a tongue tie, snoring or grinding habits, poor sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, and tired eyes are all candidates for an apnea evaluation and diagnosis. Apnea in children can affect all areas of growth and development.

Children with these dental problems should be treated orthodontically, between the ages of 6-12 years.

The idea is to positively promote specific skeletal growth of the child’s mouth and correct these patterns of malocclusion and misalignment. The goal is a large, wide, forward upper arch with a lower arch to match.

This allows the tongue to come forward out of the airway.

Once the permanent teeth have erupted by the age of 12, this correction becomes much more difficult because the child’s skeletal growth is near completion. Treating with the right orthodontist early is critical for the child’s successful airway/apnea correction. Opportunity to correct this only comes once during a small window of time.

Children without these skeletal conditions are treated at the age of 12-13, once all the permanent teeth have erupted. This case is less concerning because the skeletal pattern is correct and can be treated or retreated at any age.

These very different conditions and scenarios are why children start and complete orthodontics at different ages.

Adults with poor skeletal patterns are more difficult to treat. Orthodontics and Oral surgery can be utilized to change skeletal patterns and eliminate sleep apnea. This can be the optimally ideal treatment plan for more severe apnea patients.

From church to theater to dream home S

ome might say the Old Stewart House was saved by divine intervention.

Owners Kelly Clement and Steve Bucher purchased the property just days before it was headed for demolition back in January of 2020.

It’s a common theme in the couple’s remodeling that many of the design elements in their house today were headed for the dumpster or demolition. “‘I’m so glad you saved the building’ is what we hear a lot from multiple people.

And it’s really gratifying because, in the end, we get to live and enjoy these things,” said Bucher.

The “Old Stewart House,” whose name comes from the home’s street address, 4820 Stewart Avenue, has seen a couple reiterations in its lifetime. It was built as an Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1889, which received some new additions during the 20s and 30s with final touches coming during the 50s, but in 1971 the property would face its final days as a church and be converted into a playhouse for the Lakeshore Players.

The Lakeshore Players vacated the space in 2018 to move to the Hanifl Performing Arts Center in White Bear Lake’s Art District, leaving the space empty once again.

Clement and Bucher bought the church for $435,000, but at first, they didn’t know what to do with it.

After three months of construction workers coming in and out of the house and gutting the place down to the bare stud walls, the couple began to assess the space and came up with what houseguests will see today, which Bucher summed up as he too tried to pinpoint what exactly a space like this could be.

“I guess the point of it is it’s part music venue and very much a fulltime home and so the balance is that it’s in favor of being a home, but it would be a shame to not let this be used for music or something, ‘’ said Bucher.

The home-meets-music venue still looks a lot like a church, and Clement and Bucher never wanted to shy away from that factor. They cleverly lean into the fact that they’re living in a church by entertaining design questions like ‘should

we use an old confessional as a coat closet? What can we do with an antique kneeling bench?’ In fact, the couple has tried their best to restore the building to its original church form.

Walking up to the front door has a Sunday morning feel, but after knocking on the Douglas Fir doors, and hearing barking from Clement and Bucher’s three dogs, Harris, Keagan and Jackie, a holy trinity of sorts.

It’s pretty evident that it’s someone’s home.

Upon entering, guests are greeted with “loaves and fishes” as Bucher jokes in a quite literal sense.

The couple’s koi pond is located right at the front entrance near the kitchen.

Because the space was meant for entertaining, the couple created a number of clever ways to accommodate guests and hide the usual household clutter.

Their kitchen is a German-style kitchen with appliances and cupboards from showroom model kitchens from the brand Leicht. The style is all about clean simple lines with few handles on the cabinets and drawers.

“It’s German-style because of the sleekness. It’s the German modern aesthetic to hide everything,” said Bucher.

A favorite feature of the couple is the kitchen sink which gives the option for

chilled filtered water, carbonated water or boiling water right out of the tap.

In the center of the kitchen, presently overlooking the toaster, is a stained glass depiction of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, which is one of the many stained glass windows the couple collected for their home.

Most of the stained glass is sourced from a church in Minneapolis’ Uptown neighborhood that was recently taken down. The windows are Munich-style stained glass from the Ford brothers, a prolific stained glass company with colorful windows throughout the Midwest and East coast.

When collecting their stained glass, the couple found out they were about three windows short, but a “barn find” as Clement calls it, helped complete their collection.

“They were recovered from a random barn in Afton, and the figure painting that’s stylistically on the stained portion is Kokomo Glass Company. A lot of it had to be replaced,” said Clement.

The stained glass gives the home a perpetual overcast, drizzly day lighting, which Bucher says he prefers, but for Clement, adding a small sunroom room to the home was a must.

Overlooking the yard is a brightly lit four seasons room, which is in great contrast to the colorful, soft lighting from the stained glass. Clement likes to use the space to read or watch the dogs in the yard since it’s the only location in the house where you can actually see outside.

The focal point of the home is by far the stage, but to the left of it is another lucky find.

“We thought every church needs a bar,” said Bucher.

The bar is approximately the same age as the building and is well stocked for the couple to occasionally play bartender when the neighbors visit.

They currently don’t have any intention of selling alcohol to guests since they would have to apply for a liquor license.

For now, the bar proudly displays beer

bottles with Bucher’s last name on the label, which he found when he visited a brewery in Germany. Another feature of the bar is Bucher’s antique radio collection.

“I still remember listening to WCCO. There’s nothing that can replicate it,” said Bucher.

Finally, at the center of the home is the grand stage. Both Clement and Bucher are musicians and are accustomed to play a little something every night. At the time of our interview, sheet music from a Steely Dan tune was sitting on their nine-foot Grotrian-Steinweg concert piano.

The acoustics still need some troubleshooting but the couple hopes to start having folks come visit the home as soon as early spring. An open house held in January brought in 400 visitors in total, but the couple doesn’t think there will be more than 100 guests at any of their future events.

The couple envisions the space as a hub for arts and culture with the hope to attract A-list musicians looking for an intimate location for a concert.

“So how do I get invited? That’s what everyone wants to know,” laughs Clement.

And it’s pretty easy. Folks can sign up for the waiting list on the home’s website, oldstewart.com, for a chance to get an invite.

“It’s fun to occasionally have people over, of course, but it can be disruptive to home life, so it’s not like we’re going to have something three times a week,” said Bucher.

With over 600 people already signed up on the couple’s invite-only list, there’s a lot of anticipation for what the house will represent for the White Bear community.

“We thought every church needs a bar.”

The couple has landed on the conclusion that for the last 130 years, the building has represented a community gathering space, so they’d like to keep it that way.

While the Old Stewart House might be the place Clement and Bucher call home, their home is welcome to all.

Building a better backyard with LCI Landscape

ccording to Tim O’Connor of LCI Landscape, the technology used to design the perfect backyard has come a long way in the last 30 years.

And just in time too.

It’s what we’ve been hearing over the last two years. The pandemic has kept folks home and now they want a space where they can work, play and entertain all in the comfort of their own backyard.

“The pandemic has put our whole industry basically on steroids,” said O’Connor.

“When people started staying home they wanted a usable space for their kids to play and stay entertained without having to go somewhere. And folks were saving money by not traveling and eating out so they decided to invest in their homes.”

In 2021 LCI had eight crews going all year round just to keep up with project demand. Those projects appear to be trending toward larger backyard elements like trampolines or playsets to keep kids occupied when spending more time at home.

Swimming pools have been trending too.

Folks want to incorporate an outdoor spa or sauna to create a private backyard escape.

These trends are pointing to features of fun and functionality too. That technology O’Connor mentioned has focused around concrete retaining walls and pavers that are manufactured to look like real stone but perform even better.

“They last longer and you can’t even see the difference,” said O’Connor.

With folks avoiding crowded grocery stores during the pandemic, Costa Produce has seen a surge in people signing up for CSA. This way they can skip hours of time spent in the store searching for fresh produce and instead just pick up their weekly box and get on with their week.

“When you’re picking up our boxes at a local grocery store, it’s kind of like a one stop shop for everything you

need that week,” said Karin Costa of Costa Produce Farms.

As the season progresses, cold weather vegetables like lettuce and spinach will be swapped out for fresh cucumbers and broccoli which turn into tomatoes and sweetcorn as the summer goes on. Each box will contain five to seven of the most in season veggies for the week. Plus, Costa Produce will pick, wash and deliver produce boxes just one day before pick up.

If you forget to pick up for CSA one week, don’t stress. The fresh produce will be donated to local food shelters like Second Harvest so nothing goes to waste.

For those wanting to try CSA, but are worried about what to do with a stray kohlrabi stalk or the occasional tomatillo, Costa Produce sends out weekly recipes plus explanation guides for when folks are feeling a bit stumped about what to do with their vegetables. Costa will even send a link to a website so you can identify each item in the box.

“It’s a good way to get people out of their comfort zone of what they usually make. And it kind of forces you to eat all those healthy vegetables.”

With plenty of fresh veggies to go around, it might be time to think inside the CSA box when it comes to your spring and summer meal planning.

‘DEVIL MAY CARE’ COMES TO FRANCONIA

students of all ages can take a class and create their own creatures inspired by Hunter’s work.

“We wanted to have the classes be an opportunity for people to come in and be creative and inspired by his work, and you know, have a good time,” said Porcella.

Though Hunter won’t be a part of the Open Studio classes, he will, however, be at Franconia working on his sculptures through the month of April.

Hunter plans on making new outdoor sculptures for the park.

rett Douglas Hunter doesn’t want you to take his art too seriously.

His latest exhibition, tentatively titled “Devil May Care,” which comes to Franconia Sculpture Park April 23, has just the right amount of whimsy for the serious world.

“It’s impulsive and weird,” laughs Hunter, describing his art. The Nashville artist is all about having fun and going with the creative flow while making his signature creaturelike sculptures.

“I think we could all use a healthy dose of humor,” said Franconia Sculpture Park’s chief curator, Ginger Porcella. “I really appreciate humor and artwork. I think a lot of public art is sometimes way too serious.”

Porcella, whose family is also from Nashville, first found Hunter’s work through a friend’s Instagram feed

and thought his playful sculptures would be a colorful addition to the park and durable enough for Minnesota’s winters.

Hunter, a self-taught artist, has a passion for the outsider art aesthetic.

“It’s like the farmer who makes stuff when he gets old, or the person who doesn’t really fit in society but can’t help but make stuff,” said Hunter.

Hunter grew up in a family of artists who shared a passion for folk art. Hunter remembers his mother buying garage sale chairs and repainting them and even making creatures of her own. His grandparents, who were collectors of folk art, influenced his decision to lean into his own understanding of folk art.

Though he’s known for his primary-colored creatures, his exhibition at Franconia will take a bit of a turn.

indoors in the Mardag Gallery, and Hunter’s larger papercrete statues will remain outdoors at the park until 2024.

“One of the outdoor sculptures is a ‘Truck Full of Grief,’ which doesn't sound very fun and playful like my other stuff, but it will still be kind of playful. But yeah, that’s what I’ve been rolling with is this theme of vehicles for this gallery,” said Hunter.

Hunter’s creatures will still make an appearance indoors in the Mardag Gallery and as part of Franconia’s Open Studio Classes, where

Though Franconia is currently home to some rather serious pieces of artwork, Procella wants visitors to feel like Hunter’s work is a way to help them process some of the more politically charged art.

“I just think his work is so universal, and is going to appeal to people of all backgrounds and ages,” said Procella.

With trucks, colorful creatures and Hunter’s endless creativity on the docket, visitors to Franconia will leave appreciating the power of good humor.

Historic Courthouse solicits art submissions

H

ow can we see what others see? What is it like to walk around in someone else’s shoes? That’s what the latest art exhibit at the Stillwater Historic Courthouse aims to answer.

“Through the Eyes of Others” is calling for submissions from Washington County artists between now and May 1. Artists can enter for a small fee of $10. All proceeds go toward the Historic Courthouse restoration fund.

The selection process will be between May 2 and May 15, and artists will know whether their pieces will be included

by May 16. Monetary prizes for jurors, supporters, best in show and best under 18 will be awarded to selected artists.

The exhibition will be juried and curated by Stillwater’s

Dr. Megan Arney Johnson, whose personal philosophy is that of “slow looking,” a pedagogy that encourages us to look and then look again at art.

“We know that if we can get people to look a little longer than just 30 seconds on each work, then they have a much deeper and impactful experience,” said Arney Johnson.

Given the social upheaval and the effects of COVID-19, the exhibit’s theme has proven to be as timely as she had hoped.

“And I think that there is kind of an urgent need to consider this approach. So let’s look through the eyes of others.

Arney Johnson wants the courthouse’s exhibit to get folks to look and then look again at Washington County, explaining that the residents of the county see parts of their home that not every tourist might see.

While the exhibition calls for categories like people, architecture, parks, nature and historic sites, Arney Johnson aims to choose pieces that best tell Washington County’s story.

“We’re not just about the quaint little downtown, but also about amazing parks and amazing buildings and history.

Artists of any medium are welcome to submit. Arney Johnson has a particular interest in contemporary art, so mediums like video and contemporary craft are

encouraged. The exhibition will also focus on its under-18 category, which was created to support young artists in the county and encourage them to submit their work.

Arney Johnson hopes to receive upwards of 50 to 100 submissions and is already dreaming up a salon-style floor-to-ceiling wall hanging.

The selected artwork will be on display from June 1 through Jan. 8, 2023. A sneak peek with artists, VIPs and major supporter Art Reach will be held June 2.

Until then, Arney Johnson encourages the artists of Washington County to begin submitting their works so they can be part of a unique show at the Historic Courthouse, where visitors can look and look again at the work of local artists.

FUR PETS SAKE DOGS BOOST MORALE AT AREA BUSINESSES

Bringing a dog to work has long been a tradition of Joel and Dorothy Sherburne, who have owned the business since 1994. Throughout the years, customers got to know English bulldogs Bunny and Emma and the current shop dog, Sophie. “We just started bringing them to work so they wouldn’t be home alone all day,” Dorothy explained.

here is nothing quite like walking into a business to be greeted by four paws, a wagging tail (or nub) and a smile.

Immediately upon walking into Mahtomedi Liquor Barrel, customers are greeted by English yellow Labs Summer and Kona. Eric Hendrickson, who has owned the business since 1993, started bringing Summer, 13, for a couple days each week because he didn’t want to leave her at home alone.

Although Bunny was not very comfortable being in the store, Emma, who lived to be 11 years old, was. “Emma was content to just sit and watch people come and go. She would walk over and greet them,” Dorothy said.

“All of a sudden it turned into a marketing deal,” he said. “People would come in looking for the dog. It was just dumb luck. People would say, ‘Where is the dog?’ so I just had to start bringing her every day.”

Sophie, who turned 2 earlier this month, is still very playful. “She will jump on little kids, so we have to keep an eye out. (Kids) don’t realize her strength. She’s just a little meatball; if she jumps on you, she’ll knock you right over,” Dorothy explained. They also have to keep an eye on her because she has been known to be an escape artist if the shop door is open too long.

Summer is pretty much the best shop dog there is, Hendrickson explained. “She is gentle, she greets every customer that comes in,” he said. “(Customers) come in to get their therapy of adult beverages and then they get to pet the dog. It brightens people’s day.”

Summer is the business’s mascot, and has often been used in the store’s marketing.

one … She still tries to jump on people and barks.”

Throughout the years, Hendrickson said maybe one of 500 customers has not

been a dog person. “People are mad when I don’t bring them,” he said.

Bunny, Emma and, now, Sophie always put a smile on customers’ faces.

“People are just so intrigued by pets,” she said. “I think seeing a pet just warms your heart. It puts a smile on your face, it calms you.”

When bringing your pet to work pack a bag for them. It is like bringing a toddler.

Pack toys and something to chew so they don’t get bored.

A water dish, snacks and a place to nap (dog bed) will make the experience better for you and your pup!
