Every community is full of hidden gems from local businesses and restaurants to a wide range of annual festivals and community celebrations. Events such as Farmers markets, art fairs, parades and community festivals like Derby Days in Bayport and Lumberjack Days in downtown Stillwater bring the community together during the summer. In the winter, residents can adventure out to the various parks located in the St. Croix River Valley to crosscountry ski or attend a tree lighting ceremony in town.
When there is not a large festival going on, residents can enjoy a boat ride down the river by booking a ticket with Stillwater River Boats. Visitors can take a stroll down Main Street in Stillwater and stop in at one of the multiple restaurants that overlook the river or find something they love at one of the multiple small businesses located downtown. They can stop at the Teddy Bear Park to capture a photo or two with the sculpture Teddy Bears. As always, readers should check their community website or call prior to venturing out for a day filled with activity. If you have news to share with our news team, please send it to news@ presspubs.com. If you are an advertiser and would like to be involved in next year’s edition, please call 651-4071200 and ask for a Press multimedia representative.
We at Press Publications look forward to spending another year covering all the hidden gems your community has to offer.
The Stillwater Lift Bridge & Pedestrian Plaza
The Stillwater Lift Bridge was constructed in 1931 and its initial cost was determined to be $460,174. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. When the Lift Bridge still allowed vehicle traffic, almost 18,000 cars daily traveled across the bridge located on Chestnut Street in downtown Stillwater, but that changed in 2017 with the opening of the St. Croix Crossing bridge.
The St. Croix Crossing spans the St. Croix River between Oak Park Heights, Minnesota and St. Joseph, Wisconsin. It connects Minnesota State Highway 36 and Wisconsin State Highway 64. The total project costs were estimated to be around $646 million, one of the most expensive single bridge projects in U.S. history.
Built in 2017, the bridge was built to replace the 90-yearold Stillwater Lift Bridge. It promised faster, more reliable passage between Minnesota and Wisconsin. By connecting highways on either side of the river, planners said the crossing will streamline commerce between the two states. The new set up would save drivers time, ease congestion in downtown Stillwater and promote economic and population growth in western Wisconsin.
The Stillwater Lift Bridge was reconstructed to be a part of what is now a part of a 4.7-mile Loop Trail for pedestrians and cyclists. It serves as the northern link between the two states. The Lift Bridge continues to rise for boat traffic from May 15 to Oct. 15 each year.
What was once the entrance to the lift bridge is now a pedestrian plaza in downtown Stillwater. The Chestnut Street Plaza opened in June 2023 and is situated between Main Street and Water Street. It allows residents and visitors easy access to the Loop Trail and the river. The plaza is a two-block pedestrian walkaway lined with benches and trees. Since the closure of the bridge to vehicles, the plaza has become a place to rest, stroll or sometimes even dance at Stillwater’s “Dance Here, Dine Here” event.
The Chestnut Street Plaza project was largely paid for by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, with the city of Stillwater pitching in about a quarter of the nearly $3.2 million construction cost. It will remain permanently closed to vehicles.
The Stillwater Lift Bridge was constructed in 1931.

Arts and Culture in the Valley
The St. Croix Valley has many festivals, art shows and entertainment for residents to enjoy. In the summer, residents can adventure out to the Washington County Fairgrounds for the Food Truck Extravaganza, which features over 40 different foods from across Minnesota.
When the leaves begin to change, the city of Stillwater hosts the Rivertown Fall Art Festival on the banks of the St. Croix River. The art festival showcases over 150 artists who hand craft specialty items from various categories. Adventure out during the winter to Hometown for the Holidays, a monthlong event in Stillwater. During the month of December, downtown Stillwater has opportunities to get into the holiday spirit with a tree lighting
ceremony, a gingerbread house building contest and a breakfast with Santa at the Afton House Inn. When the snow has finally melted away and the sun comes out, residents can take a ride down the St. Croix River on one of Stillwater’s River Boats and enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner.
In May, pottery studios located in the St. Croix River Valley open their doors for a weekend for the annual St. Croix Valley Pottery Tours. The tour features renowned ceramic artists in the U.S. as well as a few international artists. It’s a chance to see the work of some of the premiere potters in the U.S. and get a look inside the idyllic setting of a few select rural pottery studios. Many people travel far to see so many accomplished artists in one place,
but it also gives residents of Minnesota a chance to meet with some of the country’s finest artists in their own backyard.
Down the road is the town of Bayport, which offers a wide variety of activities all year long. The town kicks off summer with an ice cream social at Mabel’s Ice Cream and Coffee Shop at the beginning of June. Residents from the valley can gather fresh fruits, vegetables and crafts from the Bayport Farmers Market that begins in June and ends in the middle of October. On the third weekend of September, the town puts on Derby Days hosted by the Bayport Community Action League. The weekend includes a scavenger hunt, live music, food trucks, outdoor games and more.

Stillwater Schools: The history behind the logo
Stillwater became the first school district in Minnesota— District 1—in 1850. Stillwater Area Public Schools is also home to the very first schoolhouse in Minnesota. The Lincoln School, now known as Stillwater High School, was built in 1873 at North 2nd Street and Laurel Street. The first graduating class of Stillwater High School accepted diplomas in 1876 with 10 seniors.
The district is made up of seven elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. It stretches for 30 miles along the St. Croix River and serves residents from Marine on St. Croix to Afton. It serves more than 8,000 students in 18 different communities including Lake Elmo and parts of Woodbury.
According to the Stillwater district website, it is unclear when Stillwater High School adopted their official mascot, the Ponies. The district held multiple different, informal, mascots over the years because the “Kabekoian,” “Stillwater Gazette” and the “Stillwater Arrow,” the former school newspaper, used them interchangeably. In the early years, the football team was often called the “Red and Black.” In time, the term was often referred to as the “Croix” and the “Prison City Eleven” or “Prison City Warriors.”
On Friday, Nov. 5, 1926, Stillwater traveled to Lexington Park for a football game against St. Paul Mechanic Arts. When the dust settled, the smaller
but speedy Black and Red and Croix, ran like “ponies.” In 1945, the football team was called the Ponies while other teams remained the Croix. It wasn’t until 1946 that all school sports available at the time adopted the name the Ponies.
The pony became the football team decal in 1971, and later the high school began to use the logo. An interesting fact about the current logo was that it was created by pony alum Paul Strohbehn. The school district adopted the pony as its official mascot logo in 2014 and is believed to be the only school in the world to use it.
There are also three private schools that serve the area.
The school district has seven elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school and three private schools.

There is plenty of greenspace for residents and visitors to enjoy the beauty of the St. Croix Valley area. The park systems consist of 10 full-service county, and local parks. Residents and those in surrounding communities can enjoy thousands of acres of parks, fishing piers and walking trails in the area.
Four Minnesota state parks within an hour of the Twin Cities provides residents, campers and day trippers an entry point to the St. Croix. Canoeing, kayaking and other river activities are the strongest attraction at these parks. They also offer great hiking and biking trails, campsites and all manners of wildlife watching.
Throughout the St. Croix Valley area residents can take advantage of multiple Washington County
Parks that offer a little bit of everything. At Big Marine Park, located in Marine on St. Croix, residents can fish off the fishing pier, take a walk on the paved hiking trails, swim in the summer and cross-country ski in the winter. Another park located in the Marine on St. Croix area is William O’Brien State Park. The park is known for its rolling, wooded hills and fishing. Fisherman can catch northern, bass and trout from the fishing pier.
According to the Metropolitan Council, Square Lake Park, located in Stillwater, offers some of the clearest waters in Minnesota, drawing in scuba divers from throughout the region. There is also a boat launch, canoes, a fishing pier and swimming beach for visitors.
In Stillwater, there are a variety of smaller, city parks that are typically open from the middle of April to October. Many have shelters available for residents to rent to host birthday parties, a family picnic and much more.
The most unique park in the Stillwater area is the Teddy Bear Park, located at the corner of South 2nd Street and Nelson Street. Located just one block north of downtown Stillwater, the Teddy Bear Park includes play equipment for children 7 years and younger, indoor bathrooms, three round picnic tables and a gazebo with benches. It also includes sculptures of Teddy Bears, big and small, that allow fun photo opportunities for visitors.

Baytown Township
Baytown Township was organized in 1858 and named for the adjoining bay of Lake St. Croix, a widening in the river. Over the years, the villages of Bayport, Lakeland, Lakeland Shores, Lake St. Croix Beach, Oak Park Heights, and St. Mary’s Point have been organized out of the township — leaving a largely rural area dotted with farms.
