Mounds View alumna reaches for the stars Lands Brooke Owens Fellowship BY NOELLE OLSON EDITOR

Sydney Menne has been selected as a 2022 Brooke Owens Fellow. She is heading to Long Beach, California, this summer for a 12-week summer internship program that pairs students with experts in the aerospace industry. “When I got the phone call that I was selected as a fellow, it felt like a dream coming true. It was like the gates to my whole future

were opening and all of the goals and dreams I have were suddenly being reached,” Menne said. “Everything I had worked so hard to achieve was coming true, and it felt overwhelming — but in an incredible way.” Menne, a 2019 graduate of Mounds View High School and a junior at the University of North Dakota (UND), is majoring in both mathematics and physics, with a focus in astrophysics. As a Brooke Owens fellow,

Menne will be matched with two mentors this summer — a past fellowship recipient and a leader in the aerospace industry. The fellowship will also fly Menne to Washington, D.C., for the Brookie Summit, where she will learn about the aerospace industry and meet some prominent people in the field. “This summer, I will be working at the Virgin Orbit facility in

When the Shoreview City Council honors winners of the Human Rights Commission (HRC) annual poster contest, it’s usually standing room only in council chambers. But a winter storm and COVID-19 kept the room nearly empty at the Feb. 22 City Council meeting. “Every year, prior to COVID, this was one of the best-attended council meetings,” HRC’s longtime member Julie B. Williams said. “Over the years, many council members have told me that this is their favorite meeting.” The One Community of Many Colors art contest for fourth graders was established in 1994 in recognition of Martin Luther King Day. “Students are asked to create a poster that includes people of different races and cultures engaged in positive activity,” Williams said. “The purpose of this contest is to encourage young people to interact more freely and comfortably with those whom they view as different from themselves. And to experience the value of diversity.” This year, five schools participated: Emmet D. Williams, Turtle Lake Elementary, Island Lake Elementary, St. Odilia School and Oak Hill Montessori. “We had a grand total of 259 posters,” Williams said. “We actually review all of the posters and then have the difficult task of picking out 20 winners — fi rst through tenth place, and 10 honorable mentions.”

The King of Cakes: A history of Mardi Gras’ oldest pastry It isn’t a party without cake and Mardi Gras’ king cake manages to outshine ordinary cakes. This purple, yellow and green cake often has a glossy sheen and a lucky plastic baby baked inside. While these cake ingredients may sound a little over the top, there is a long history of how this colorful cake came to be.

Traditionally, the first day to eat king cake is Jan 6, which is known as the first day of Epiphany for Christians. Epiphany marks the day the three wise men or kings came to visit Jesus after his birth, so the name “king” cake is a reference to the famous three kings. However, it is likely that a similar pagan celebration occurred throughout the Roman Empire called Saturnalia, which celebrated the god of agriculture. During the celebration, cakes were of-

The tradition spread throughout many parts of Europe and is oftenSEE KING CAKE, PAGE 16
