Peace Community of Faith Church (Peace) in Shoreview will host a concert in support of the LGBTQIA+ community with singer/songwriter Bobby Jo Valentine at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 26.

The live concert will also celebrate the ministry of Peace Pastor Gary Walpole, who retires at the end of April.

This is not Valentine’s first concert at Peace.

“The first time he came was back in 2016,” said Dave Tidball, Peace music director. “He reached out to us because we are an inclusive church that welcomes everyone, including the LBGTQ folks.

“We had a pretty good crowd in here for the first concert with about 200 people, and it was a really good show.”

Quita Bertelsen, Peace lay leader, said Valentine is gay man who hails from a conservative Christian upbringing.

Planning for the Deluxe corporate campus begins

Plans are taking shape for a new development where the Deluxe Corporation stood for over three decades as a hallmark site in Shoreview.

Assistant Community Development Director Niki Hill gave a presentation at a recent City Council meeting regarding a planned unit development (PUD) concept application submitted

by Scannell Properties for the former Deluxe corporate campus.

Scannell Properties bought the property in 2020 after Deluxe decided to relocate its headquarters to downtown Minneapolis and build a new financial services center in Georgia.

Hill said Scannell Properties has two possible redevelopment concepts.

Although her time wearing the crown will soon be over, Zophia Raleigh has no plans to stop exploring her cultural identity and spreading Irish cheer.

Raleigh, a Blaine resident, is the daughter of Rep. Donald Raleigh (R-Blaine) and Marnie Ochs-Raleigh. Raleigh is the only Miss Shamrock since the St. Patrick’s Day Association began in 1967 to hold the title for two years (2020-21). She has also been deemed the grand marshal of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in St. Paul.

“She has been a true champ through a lot of firsts for our association and has handled the role gracefully during her tenure,” said St. Patrick’s Association President Katie Martin.

She explained that the 2020 parade and Miss Shamrock season looked very different because of the pandemic, so Raleigh was asked to commit to another year of service as Miss Shamrock. She gladly accepted.

“The association couldn’t think of a better person to be our 2022 grand marshal than Zophia, who did a brilliant job navigating the role during a global pandemic,” Martin said.

Raleigh is a 2016 graduate of Centennial High School. She attended the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and majored

Raleigh applied to be Miss Shamrock. Each year the association invites Irish women 21-and-over to become Miss Shamrock Princesses. The princesses spend six weeks together selling buttons and spreading Irish cheer.

The princesses and Miss Shamrock spend the remainder of the year visiting area parades and festivals as representatives of the association.

Miss Shamrock is chosen by the members of the association and is crowned just in time for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Raleigh estimates that she has well over 500 hours invested into the crown at this point.

“Truthfully, what I love is being able to continue the legacy that my parents started, giving back and volunteering; and being a member of the community is the most important part.

It’s what societies are built on.

It’s what keeps your neighbors healthy and strong and ensures that the future generation of kids are being raised in an atmosphere that will set them up to achieve long-term success.”

“Valentine is a multifaceted and sought-after speaker, songwriter and storyteller from northern California,” Bertelsen stated. “He openly tells his story of being turned away from God at a young age because of who he was.”

Both Tidball and Bertelsen said Valentine not only puts on a good musical show, he tells some great personal stories.

“He talks about why the song is important to him, and it has a theme to it,” Tidball said. “In one case, it was about loss and what it means to lose things and how you deal with it.”

Valentine lost his house in the wildfires in California back in 2017.

“He lost everything, including all of his instruments He and his partner were back visiting his partner’s sick mother and they couldn’t get back in time,” Bertelsen said. “I happened to travel there two weeks later, and the area was total devastation.”

According to Valentine’s website, his artistry crosses the lines of many genres, but his thoughtful lyrics and catchy melodies reach listeners on all paths of life. The authentic, heartfelt nature of his songs have won him Songwriter of the Year at both the West Coast Songwriter’s Association and the SoCo Songwriter Competition. He has also received

the Nashville Next Level Songwriter award and more.

Valentine has sold over 20,000 albums and performed more than 1,500 concerts, all without a record label, and solely with the support of devoted groups of fans and friends who grow in number after every performance.

This will be Valentine’s third performance at Peace. He will participate in the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday, March 26, at Peace.

Bertelsen said Peace is part of the United Methodist Church, which has a focus on being a community of faith that actively accepts all people.

She also noted that a key strength of Peace is an open congregation of all sexual orientations, gender presentations, religions and ethnicities. Peace maintains a community outreach through ministry, music, and progressive Christianity.

No tickets are required for the concert. Instead, Peace Community Church has elected to support OutFront Minnesota with a freewill offering to be collected at the concert.

OutFront Minnesota’s mission is to create a state where LGBTQIA+ people are free to be who they are, love who they love and live without fear of violence, harassment or discrimination.

North metro pastor captures the Hmong spirit with Lego creations

As a young boy, Greg Rhodes loved building Lego creations. When the pandemic hit, he rekindled his Lego obsession.

“After completing my ‘Mandalorian’ diorama in November, my wife (Pang Foua) suggested my next Lego project should be a paj ntaub (Hmong story cloth),” the Vadnais Heights resident said. “The minute she said it, I immediately said, “Yes!’” Rhodes' Lego project is about the pain and resilience of the Hmong, who fled Laos after the Secret War. It has 25 different scenes, including Hmong fighting Lao soldiers, bombing homes, harvesting corn and grinding rice. Rhodes noted that every scene was inspired by actual paj ntaubs.

“It's an amazing story that gets told with so much movement and activity. It's not just history, it's culture,” Rhodes said. “It took me six weeks to complete from idea to completion, and it was challenging.”

Rhodes, a pastor at RiverLife Church, has a background in graphic design, which helped him create the clothing, including 14 different prototypes for the dresses, men's sashes and beanies.

He also said he had to modify some Lego parts, like the qeej, a traditional Hmong instrument, or the skirt of a traditional Hmong outfit.

“The primary element is the people, and there are 57 mini-figures in the display,” he said.

bolize the strength of the Hmong people.

“This isn't my story, and I wanted to make sure to honor the 40 years of women and men who made these story cloths and for the people who are still alive who lived this,” Rhodes said. “My wife is Hmong, and she was age 4 when they left the village and age 5 when she came to America. She would tell me stories, and she still remembers.”

Rhodes plans to create 200 Hmong mini-figures to sell online as a fundraiser for the Hmong Museum in St. Paul.

“I am a white man in America, and I don't want to profit from someone else's story, particularly somebody else's trauma. For folks who lived this, it was trauma,” Rhodes said. “I want to do this to build the community. I think it's important, because communities of color have lived for generations seeing white Americans profit off them, and it's best to feed into the community, not off of the community.”

Rhodes said he was overwhelmed by the response he received on his Lego paj ntaub, which was posted on Facebook.

“I knew I had something fun, but I didn't expect it to go viral and literally have thousands of people sharing it and liking it,” he laughed.

With all of the positive feedback, Rhodes recently launched Hmong Bricks, a website with video tutorials and free downloads to help people build their own Hmong Lego creations.

“It speaks to how important representation is and for people to see themselves in art and in toys,” he said. “I love the fact that I was able to help people see themselves in something they've never seen before.”

Registration set to open for summer programs

Karl Brown, director of community education, presented an update on community education and upcoming programs during a recent Mounds View School Board meeting.

Registration for summer days camps will open at 9 a.m. Monday, March 21.

“This summer we are are going to have eight weeks of summer day camps Monday through Thursday, and optional field trips on Fridays,” Brown said.

He anticipates that 2,000 people will enroll in summer camps this year.

A new program offered this summer is language camps — Spanish, French and Chinese.

Brown said another new offering this year is a summer camp and family expo, which will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at Turtle Lake Elementary School in Shoreview. The expo will be a free event for families and community members.

He said 450 people have already registered for the expo.

“We're excited about this event, and we've gotten great feedback from the community,” Brown said.

The director of community education also noted that possible upcoming adult enrichment programs being developed for fall 2022 include cooking/meal preparation, fitness/recreation, community mental health, and visual and performing arts.

“We've seen pretty good success in our adult classes,” Brown noted.

Comments to the Board Three people signed up during Comments to the Board before the Mounds View School Board meeting March 8. All school board members were present.

Lois Comry discussed how monoclonal antibodies are produced using human blood stem cells based on an article she read.

Christine LaDuke said because she doesn't agree with critical race theory, people might think she

is a white supremacist, which she said is far from the truth.

“The thing that shaped me most was being raised during the Civil Rights Movement,” LaDuke said, “seeing people sacrifice their lives so their children and grandchildren could have a better future. The things they opposed most was segregation, prejudice and racism. And now critical race theory teaches that.”

Board Chair Jonathan Weinhagen said the board will come together and talk about the issues brought up that are within the scope of the board's work and related to government.

“It's super helpful to hear your perspective and have you here this evening,” Weinhagen said.

Other board action • Chris Paquette, director of operations, provided an update on upcoming summer operations projects across the district. Paquette detailed upcoming projects and noted there would be regular maintenance such as casework, painting and flooring repair across district buildings.

• Jen Lodin, executive director of student support and engagement, and Chris Paquette provided an update on the district operation goal (DOP) of centralizing the district’s welcome and enrollment services. Lodin shared that the welcome and enrollment center would be located at the District Center and would be operational at some point during the 2022-23 school year.

Paquette gave an overview of the construction and work on the space for the center.

• Treasurer Shauna Bock read the list of gifts the district received this period. There were nine gifts for school programs totaling $9,819.24, and 22 gifts received for the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf, which totaled $68,219.34. The total amount donated so far this school year is $548,966.69.

CPC expands in Arden Hills CPC (Colder Products Company), a leading manufacturer of connection technologies used in biopharmaceutical processing, medical, thermal management and industrial applications, is adding to its footprint in the Twin Cities. CPC plans to occupy a 168,000-square-foot facility at 4200 Round Lake Road W. in Arden Hills by fall 2022. The building will house new production, warehouse and office space for the more than 500 employees who will work there when it opens.

The development follows the recent opening of the company’s global headquarters in Roseville, which includes production operations and an additional nearby warehouse. CPC’s employee base has more than doubled since 2020. Today, the company employs almost 1,200 people worldwide.

• Highest and best use of the site.

• Setback of the apartment building.

Council Member Sue Denkinger said she prefers concept B. “I like the fact that there is housing included in this proposal,” Denkinger said.

“Given the full use of this property and how large it is, I wonder if there are any public safety implications because of the proximity to the schools and traffic at certain times of the day.”

Scannell Properties Senior Development Manager Dan Salzer, who was present at the March 7 City Council meeting, said, “What we’re really trying to do is drive home flexibility.”

Mayor Sandy Martin thanked Salzer for the cooperative and flexible nature that representatives of Scannell Properties have shown while working with city staff.

“We really appreciate the fact that you seem to recognize what this parcel has meant to Shoreview,” Martin said. “The Deluxe site was really part of everything that happened in our community for many years before we saw a lot of other developments.”

Council Member Cory Springhorn said he prefers concept B because there is not much of a demand for business parks like there was 20 years ago.

“I think more mixed use is more advantageous and flexible,” Springhorn said. “If we don’t get

everything we’re looking for, we can be open to other things. Also, the more attractive and green the property can be, I think the better.”

Council Member Emy Johnson asked Salzer to describe the developer’s vision for the proposed warehouse buildings on the property and what it would mean for the traffic flow on I-694.

Salzer said these buildings tend to attract businesses with a high finish look, but didn’t say anything about the traffic flow.

Martin said she would like to see more housing on the site.

Salzer responded and said that housing is something Scannell is open to, but said the sanitary and sewer capacity on the site is somewhat limited.

“We do want to work with you, and we do want to provide the city with some of the opportunities that you have in mind,” Martin said to Salzer.

“Let’s keep up the dialogue, and I hope that we’ve given you the direction of what you came here for.”

Let me introduce myself

’m Corinne Stremmel and I’m the new editor of the Lowdown and Savour Magazine.

I’ve been at Press Publications since early October, and I’m excited to bring folks all their regional arts and entertainment news.

I grew up in Brookings, South Dakota, the home of South Dakota State University and allegedly, cookies and cream ice cream. The first newspaper I ever wrote for was my high school newspaper the Broboca, (Brookings and our mascot, the bobcats combined). That was when my journalism teacher encouraged me to apply to the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Corinne’s Journalism Conference. I was selected as one of 50 students to Comment fly to Washington and attend a journalism conference geared Corinne toward junior-age journalist hopefuls.

Stremmel I ended up in Minnesota when I decided to attend Gustavus Adolphus College where I majored in English and communications. At school, I worked for the college newspaper, The Gustavian Weekly, for four years doing all sorts of jobs from copy editing, feature writing, graphic design to eventually being the editor-in-chief.

Throughout college, I developed my love for magazines. I wrote for different publications like 605 Magazine, an arts and entertainment magazine for the state of South Dakota, the Gustavus Quarterly, Gustvaus’ alumni magazine and after I graduated in 2021, I interned with Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine where I wrote arts and entertainment stories for the magazine blog.

I can thank my parents for my appreciation of the news. As early as I can remember my parents were tuning into KSFY, the local TV station for eastern South Dakota morning, noon and night. Growing up, the news was always on in the background and a magazine or newspaper was always open on the kitchen table.

As devoted consumers of media, my parents taught me about the importance of staying informed about one’s community.

It was in middle school that I started my own media consumption. I would wake up at 5 a.m. just to watch the morning news and would avidly read Time Magazine and old copies of InStyle my piano teacher would give me. I loved the glossy pages and expert storytelling.

I supposed I would say that news has been a constant element in my life.

It wasn’t until college that I had more autonomy to pick the stories I wanted to write about and really see them come to life in print.

I’m so glad I stuck with it. Now with Press Publications, I get the same chance to bring expert storytelling to regional people. I can’t wait for you to read more.

Open government is good government

E

lection season is under way, and this year promises to be especially busy with redistricting producing many new faces seeking office.

Candidates are hitting the campaign trail outlining their priorities. With every press release and speech is certain to be a pledge to be transparent with constituents.

The timing is perfect to send the message that “open government is good government” Sunshine – the theme of Sunshine Week Week, March 13-19. At its Jim Pumarlo foundation, Sunshine Week underscores the importance of the free flow of information for an open, effective and accountable government.

Editors and reporters routinely are in the trenches seeking everyday information that appointed and elected officials want to keep confidential – or, at minimum, want to release on their terms. We’ve become all too accustomed to the stonewalling of information on state and national levels. The practice unfortunately is increasingly common in local government, too.

Witness these two examples from the past year of officials trying to set their own rules.

The St. Louis County School Board continued to meet in person despite cautionary measures taken by many bodies

during the pandemic. At the same time, it restricted the public to remote monitoring. The Ely Timberjay cried foul and sought an advisory opinion from a state agency, which ruled the board in violation of the Open Meeting Law. A citizen questioned several actions of the West Lakeland Township Board with respect to the Open Meeting Law. The issues included the board’s failure to keep a separate journal of its votes and its failure to give three days’ notice of a change in meeting location. The state agency ruled the actions out of bounds.

The advisory opinions were handed down through the Data Practices Office of the Minnesota Department of Administration.

News organizations are usually the first to object when access to proceedings and information is denied or made more difficult.

Citizens need to understand that state laws governing access to open meetings and government records preserve the rights of all Minnesotans.

Citizens have equal opportunity to challenge actions.

Most troubling are the regular attempts to block access to government information or to conduct public business behind closed doors. I witnessed it all too often when I sat behind the editor’s desk.

Landfill siting may be controversial, but constituents will be more accepting of the process if a county board identifies potential locations from the start.

The departure of a controversial department head

may not be official until formally accepted, but a city council will do itself a favor by announcing the resignation as soon as it is submitted.

The closing of an elementary school may not be on a school board’s agenda for a few weeks, but the administration will win higher marks if it informs residents of its intentions when first put on the table.

The above examples, plus many more, underscore why the press remains vigorous in pursuing access to and publication of a variety of records. It’s the proverbial “if you give an inch, they’ll take a mile.” If the news media agree to one concession, all too often an individual or agency will try to stretch the rules. Soon laws are enacted with additional restrictions on what once was routinely public information – information that’s important to readers.

Tracking down public information takes perseverance and hard work, but our communities are the beneficiaries. The efforts of editors and reporters likely irk more than a few elected and appointed officials. The press nevertheless stands firm that readers are best served by a full menu of public information rather than a selective serving.

What kind of America is this?

The Founders’ four major fears: corruption, slavery, religion, mobs. Their fears have been demonstrated. A March 1 “letter” demanded “the people call the shots,” without providing context.

A March 4 Tribune article on “school transparency” did. One political party decided to add schools to its “enemies of the people” elections strategy — joining public health workers, elderly elections volunteers, nurses and doctors.

The “off with their heads” movement, fueled by media morons and internet idiots, states citizen “common sense” trumps experience, training and — above all — expert knowledge.

The author votes against ANYONE in office, Washington, Lincoln, FDR included. Two thousand years ago, Pharisees determined a person who preached “love they neighbor as thyself” was dangerous and needed to be “voted out of office” by crucifixion.

Citizens might contemplate “failures” of District 621: annual top 10 status of both high schools, students sent all over America to college, award-winning teachers.

Recently mailed, a 36-page summer community education brochure of activities. The “autocrats” have managed a few positive things.

“We the people” have been prominent in 6,000 airplane incidents, attacks on hospital personnel, school boards, county commissioners — some compared to Nazis, the Taliban, Marxists — and gave us Jan. 6, 2021. They’ve been behind the 30,000 referees, numerous public health workers and elections officials who have quit since 2018.

“We the people” feel their children are “indoctrinated” in “unAmerican” ideology: discussions of women not voting for 130 years, subject to “glass ceilings” since; Black people didn’t “enjoy” slavery and segregation; 3-10% are gay; America has NEVER lived up to “all Men are created equal.”

621 Board policies changed because “we the people” zealots abused the non-required public forum during school board business meetings. The forum still exists, non-televised. Far easier: call/email teachers, attend parent-teacher conferences — unless one has no faith in their children’s intelligence; and is instead looking to “score political points.”

Question: when school boards, elections volunteers and hospital personnel require police protection, when everybody has “rights” and IS “right”, and suspicions abound — what kind of an “America” exists?

My thoughts about inflation

Money is defined as a commodity that is accepted in exchange for every other commodity. Like any commodity, the price of money can fluctuate up or down. When the price of money goes down, it is defined as inflation. This causes us to spend more money when it is used in exchange for another commodity.

When there is more money around, it devaluates the currency and causes inflation to go up. The government causes more money to circulate when it prints money for such things as the CARES COVID relief bill.

In the face of the Great Depression, Franklin Roosevelt passed the New Deal, which totaled $856 billion, adjusted for inflation. The Marshall Plan, passed by Truman to rebuild Europe after World War II, was $144 billion, inflation adjusted. These relief programs were less than half the size of the CARES Act, signed under Donald Trump on March 27, 2020, for $2.2 trillion.

This money was not even spent before President Biden passed $1.9 trillion for the American Rescue Plan on March 11, 2021, plus the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill on Nov. 15, 2021. He wanted $1.9 trillion for Build Back Better before members of his own party intervened. Congress is now adding another $15 billion in the current omnibus spending bill in the Senate for further COVID relief.

Much of this money is not accounted for.

The growth of money in circulation can be found by charting the M1 and M2 money supply. In April of 2020 after the CARES Act was signed, M1 went up to about $17 trillion, a 400% increase in one month. M2 went from about $15.5 trillion in February 2020 to $22 trillion today, a 42% increase.

Inflation is now running at 7.5%, a 40-year high. It is not expected to come down for a long time.

Bernie Sanders blames inflation on corporate greed and profiteering.

This could not be further from the truth. Inflation is not caused by producers of goods who increase prices, but by the devaluation of the currency. This devaluation is happening because of the spending bills in Washington, D.C., and also in the Minnesota Capitol.

Seniors recommit to fitness at Shoreview Community Center

It can take a good amount of motivation to recommit to fitness, but with the help of local senior fitness classes, that commitment can take place at any age.

Penny Sourile is working on her own fitness journey and is a regular at the Shoreview Community Center.

Sourile has been working out since she was in her 40s. She stopped going to the gym for a short while before she discovered her community center’s senior fitness classes.

“I’ve always been a walker, but as you get older you lose some of the elasticity that you can’t get back by just walking,” said Sourile.

When Sourile first began classes at the community center about 2 ½ years ago, she remembers not being able to do some of the exercises at first. Now that she’s made the commitment to attending class, she says her balance and flexibility have dramatically improved.

Michelle Majkozak, the general manager of the Shoreview Community Center, explains that’s the goal of many of these classes.

“We do a chair yoga class that involves a lot of modified stretching, and it’s what it sounds like. It’s yoga, but based on a chair, but they do a lot of range of motion,” said Majkozak.

“It really focuses on strength training and resistance exercises.”

For those wanting something other than strength training, Sourile recommends the “Let’s Move” class for cardio, describing it as “Zumba, but for older folks.”

“It’s so much fun. It’s all set to music, some current music on occasion, but nothing slow. We’re all working really hard,” said Sourile.

That sense of connection has been

a bonus health benefit for seniors like Sourile. During the pandemic, Sourile’s fitness classes were among the places she felt safe socializing.

“It turned out to be my social life for a bit,” said Sourile. “I said to my instructors, this turned out to be my socializing and being a senior, there were a lot of places you didn’t want to go during the pandemic.”

Sourile’s fitness classes were twofold, providing her with a chance to exercise and make some new friends.

“Those of us that are regulars love these classes. I would recommend them to anybody,” she said.

The White Bear Lake YMCA offers senior fitness classes tailored to age group and ability level. Its Forever Well program offers wellness programs and activities for adults 55 and up.

Yoga, aquatics, strength training and some more unique classes like line dancing, Zumba and Tai Chi are among some of the popular senior fitness classes held at the YMCA. COVID-19 was a challenge for many senior folks who avoided going out to their regular gym, so the White Bear Lake YMCA started offering virtual classes, which are continuing into this year.

“Now that people can do classes from their own home, say you’re a snowbird, you can take virtual classes. And these classes are continuing to grow,” said Forever Well Coordinator Laura McNiss.

“The classes also let seniors get a sense of connection with the YMCA members and other community members.”

gets closer to 70%. In fact, the name Raleigh means “Fawn Valley” in Irish. Her family is originally from Waterford, Ireland.

As grand marshal, Raleigh will set the pace of this year’s parade. “I will just be another person there that is there enjoying the crowd and sharing what it means to be an Irish person, an American and, most of all, a Minnesotan in our community,” she said.

One thing to note about this year’s parade is that the route is reversed. The parade usually travels down Fifth Street from Mears Park (Fifth Street and Sibley Street) to Rice Park (Fifth Street and Market Street); this year, however, it will travel from Rice Park to Mears Park and end at CHS Field, where for the first time ever, attendees are invited to the Ballpark Hooley. The outdoor party will include live music, Irish dancers, food and beer.

Nine princesses are vying to fill Raleigh’s shoes, and the new Miss Shamrock will be crowned March 15. “Zophia has been a fabulous role model for these women. And we look forward to seeing Zo use her leadership skills in a different capacity within our organization,” Martin said.

As a “has been,” Raleigh says she plans to stay involved with the association. “Whatever the association needs from me, I will step up and do,” she said.

Wheeler closing out a 1,000-point career for Mustangs

Dylan Wheeler, a double-digit scorer for Mounds View since ninth grade, surpassed the 1,000-point marker early this season, before missing nine games with a wrist injury.

The 6-foot-3 forward and co-captain has been back in action for eight games, although his scoring has dropped off after the injury, which occurred during weight-lifting.

His total was 1,098 points heading into Tuesday’s Section 5AAAA second-round game against Park Center, which will be his final game unless the Mustangs upset the state’s topranked team.

“Dylan is one of the hardest working players ever for Mounds View,” said coach Dave Leiser. “Dylan has spent hours working on his shot and offensive skills. He is also a phenomenal leader. He has a great knowledge

of the game and is like another coach on the floor.”

Wheeler broke into the lineup on an 8-19 team as a freshman and led with 12.9 points per game. He averaged 11.2 points on a 20-9 team in 10th grade, 12.0 points on a 16-4 team as a junior, and currently 12.8 on a 16-11 team as a senior. The last three years, first Evan Kim and then Kobe Kirk became the Mustangs scoring leaders.

Wheeler is the 10th Mustang boy to score 1,000 points. The record holder is Travis Busch with 1,771.

Wheeler was recently selected to play in the 2022 Minnesota Basketball All Star Series. The All Star event is scheduled for Saturday, April 9 at East Ridge High School in Woodbury.

Seven Mustangs wrestle at state; Solheim places 6th Jacob (“J Roc”) Solheim of Mounds View picked up a sixth-place medal at the state wrestling tournament Saturday. He was the only one of seven Mustang state qualifiers to get on the podium.

A junior wrestling at 195 pounds, Solheim opened with a pin of Eastview’s Ethan Dupont in 1:49, then lost to Buffalo’s Macray Klohs 3-2.

Rep. Kelly Moller to run for election in new district State Representative Kelly Moller of Shoreview will run for re-election in November in a new legislative district. Due to decennial redistricting, Moller’s old 42A district will become district 40A. The new district includes parts of Shoreview and New Brighton, as well as all of Arden Hills and Mounds View.

The newest parts of her district are in several precincts in New Brighton (including most of the area north of 694), while parts of Shoreview mostly south of Tanglewood Drive will shift

to a new district currently held by State Representative Jamie Becker-Finn.

“I look forward to talking to voters this summer and fall to hear their concerns and comments, especially new constituents in New Brighton,” Moller stated.

Kelly Moller is currently serving her second term in the Minnesota House of Representatives. As a career prosecutor who advocates for victims of crime, she has been a leader at the Capitol for survivors of sexual

assault, Minnesotans with disabilities, student mental health, and gun violence prevention.

She serves as Vice-Chair of the House Judiciary Finance and Civil Law Committee and also sits on the Education Policy Committee, Human Services Finance and Policy Committee, and the Behavioral Health Policy Division.

Moller has also authored legislation to acquire funding for the new Lake Johanna Fire Department building in Arden Hills and for safer pedestrian

and bike access to Mounds View High School.

Superintendent Chris Lennox and Darin Johnson, executive director of school management, gave an update regarding operations in buildings and programs District-wide as Mounds View Public Schools continues to navigate the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Johnson presented updates in the areas of transportation, nutrition services, student support and staffing. Board chair Jonathan Weinhagen then summarized the role of a policy governance board, explained the Board’s partnership with the Superintendent and affirmed the management’s work and decision-making process during the pandemic.

Quarterly budget report and amendments Bernice Humnick, executive director of business services, provided revenue and expenditure reports for all funds for the first quarter ending December 31, 2021. Each quarterly budget update provides an opportunity to review budget variances and make amendments when information becomes available. Budget assumptions The Board approved budget assumptions for fiscal year 2022-23 as presented by Bernice Humnick, executive director of business services. RAMSEY COUNTY DITCH 8 (RCD 8) DRAINAGE SYSTEM RECORD PUBLIC HEARING PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. the Rice Creek Watershed District (RCWD) Board of Managers will receive public comment under Minnesota Statutes 103E.101, subd. 4a, on proceedings to correct the drainage system record and to establish the functional alignment, dimension and grade of RCD 8. The RCWD established the option for the public to participate in its meetings either in person or virtually.

Residents get first look at Hodgson/CR J improvements

The first public open house for the County Road J and Hodgson Road project was held at the Shoreview Community Center earlier this month.

The project involves the cities of Lino Lakes and Shoreview, and Anoka and Ramsey counties.

Residents were able to express concerns, ask questions and leave comments with the public officials who were in attendance.

Shoreview Public Works Director Mark Maloney, Anoka County Engineer Jerry Auge and Design Engineer Michelle Pritchard were on hand to answer questions.

There were large printouts and maps showing how the proposed alternatives of a roundabout or signaled

Shoreview resident Joan Carlson said she came to the open house to see if the plans were going to affect her yard.

After looking at the map, she was pleased to see that it would not.

Pritchard and Auge had renderings of a traffic signal and a roundabout for the project. “Our goal for both Lino Lakes and Shoreview is to keep the traffic flowing,” Pritchard said.

Open house attendees were asked to review the information, ask questions and then had the option to provide their thoughts and feedback by utilizing comment cards or placing Post-It notes with questions/ comments on the displays.

“What we're expecting to get out of this is to improve the intersection,” Maloney said. “That's important to Shoreview, because when this intersection doesn't work well and becomes congested, people get off the road and drive through neighborhoods.”

“Working with Anoka and Ramsey counties will help improve that situation and will provide a better quality of life,” he added.

Shoreview residents Brad and Melissa Bagley expressed concerns about traffic congestion. Maloney told them that a roundabout would help with both traffic and speeding, which is an issue in that area.

Maloney also said that the city of Shoreview is looking forward to filling in a gap in its trail system as a result of the project.
