SHOREVIEW — The City Council unanimously approved a preliminary agreement for Elevage LLC to construct a multipurpose apartment building, commercial retail building and 14 townhomes. The new development would be located at the corner of Rice Street and County Road E, as well as along Rustic Place. The vote, which took place at the March 7 meeting, was by far the most hotly debated item on the council’s agenda. The land that Elevage plans to develop totals 4.2 acres and lies between Rice Street and Rustic Place. County Road E borders the southern edge of the parcel. Currently, a 34,887-square-foot strip mall which houses Pet Junction, Subway and Hair Smith Salon and other businesses is located on the property. Plans show the main apartment complex will be 55 feet in height and will host a restaurant and other retail companies on the bottom level. Trails, green space and a pool are also part of the design presented to city officials. Citizen comments, council deliberation, and presentations from the Shoreview Planning Commission brought the discussion just over the two-hour mark. Public hearings held during city planning meetings dating back to last year have already included more than nine hours of public comments. The largest concerns raised by citizens addressed the height of the building. “Our biggest concern is our overwhelming loss of our privacy,” said Tom Johnson, who shares a property line on the north side of the proposed development. “There are apartments that will have a direct and unimpeded

Youth finds work and a friend BY SARA MARIE MOORE STAFF WRITER

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Abriana Anderson considers her work with the Northeast Youth and Family Services (NYFS) Senior Chore Program to be more than a job. The White Bear Lake High School junior has befriended

the senior citizen she serves, Nancy Shreve. “It’s not just a work relationship,” said Abriana. “We go garage saling together.” “Or I will hijack her mom and we will go garage saling,” piped in Nancy. Abriana’s job with NYFS has become a family friendship with Nancy, who lives only five minutes away from the

Friendships form as walkers fight cancer of her walking friends during happy hour at a bar. “We always joke around that we actually met in a bar,” said Dahlke. This year she has seven members on her team so far. She makes a point to make their training together fun. “We walk every weekend. We do a lot of walking from downtown St. Paul,” said Dahlke. “We just try to see some of the sites in the city.” Often her team members pack a picnic lunch in their backpacks and listen to music. And they chat. “There is always life to talk about,” she said.

SHOREVIEW — Debbie Dahlke and her team, the Twin Titties Trekkers, are gearing up for another 60-mile Susan G. Komen 3-Day breast cancer walk August 19-21. Dahlke has been taking part in the walk for 12 years. In her fi rst year of training she didn’t know anyone, but met two other newbies through a training program. “When you are walking those 16-18 miles, it is hard to do it alone,” said Dahlke. The trio walked together for many years and still make crafts, such as scarves, to raise money for Dahlke’s team. Her team has changed over the years and has always been open to new members. She recruited one
