Sometimes the smallest of gestures can make a difference in someone's life.

Kayla Chlan was nominated for the Child of the Light award by her fifth grade teacher at St. Odilia School in Shoreview for being an outstanding example of someone who lets their light shine by demonstrating Christ-like leadership, courage and kindness.

Each month, St. Odilia draws two names from the students who were nominated for the award and allow them to donate $50 to a charity of their choice.

Chlan's name was one of the two names drawn, and she decided to give her $50 award to Wishes & More to help provide services to kids who are battling serious medical conditions.

“I picked this charity because I really wanted to help people who wanted wishes, and I thought I could make them come true with some money,” Chlan said.

Golden girls of Shoreview hit the friendship jackpot There’s an old saying that long friendships are like jewels, polished over time to become beautiful and enduring.

This is true for Marilyn Bucher Silver, Carol Bourquin and Eleanor Pearson, who have had a longtime friendship spanning 82 years.

The three were 9 years old when they moved with their families to the Rustic Place, Rice and St. Marie Street neighborhood in Shoreview. They met each other at Silver’s birthday party and instantly became fast friends.

“When my family moved here in the fall of 1940, the war started a year later,” Bourquin said. “My dad went into the service and my brother-in-law was at Pearl Harbor, and everything changed.”

Silver said that even though the neighborhood was small, the neighbors did a lot of socializing.

“From St. Marie Street to County Road E, there were only three houses at that time,” she said.

The girls didn’t have a TV while they were growing up, so they did other things to keep busy and have fun.

“We would play with our dolls, sew clothes for our dolls and we cut out furniture from the Monkey Wards catalog,” Silver said. “We would lay them out on a sheet on our Ping-Pong table.”

The girls also spent a lot of time walking, riding their bikes and hanging out at Breezy Point Beach on Lake Owasso.

“We were usually barefoot, and the pavement almost burned our feet,” Pearson said. “We also had winter fun sliding and skating on Lake Vadnais.”

“That's really an honor that out of your whole class that your teacher chose you,” Blomberg said.

Wishes & More supports Minnesota kids (and their families) who have been diagnosed with terminal and life-threatening conditions. The only criteria to receive support is age (birth to until 19th birthday) and the doctor’s confirmation of their prognosis.

“What makes our special charity so unique is that we not only grant our kids a wish, we also put away a $2,000 Scholarship of Hope with the hope that we can present it to them upon high school graduation and the continuation of their education,” said Joelle Gamble, senior director of

communications and development for Wishes & More. “Our third program, which is also unique to Wishes & More, is gifting funds to the surviving parents of a child who dies without receiving a wish.”

“We had the pain, and the pleasure, of presenting 79 of those checks last year, and we can never ignore the fact that there is a grieving mother, father or both, who will never see their child grow up,” she added.

When asked what her favorite subject in school was, Chlan said, “I really don't know why, but I like writing.”

Her dad, Kyle Chlan, mentioned that she also has really nice handwriting.

Welcome back snowbirds I was thankful when my sister and brother-in-law offered to help mom and dad make the three day, 1,700 mile trip from Florida last week. It’s a big project getting their place closed up for the summer. I heard they arrived to a list of 12 to-do items and ended up finishing twice as many. Setting up dehumidifiers, packing and loading the mini van, cleaning out the freezer and refrigerator, and sorting pre-packaged food based on expiration dates were just a few things that needed to be done. Cleaning out and packing up is always a bigger project than you think it’s going to be. My parents were very grateful for their help, from cleaning and organizing to driving.

They arrived home around noon and I helped unload the minivan. It was packed full of suitcases, boxes and folders. As we took load after load to their condo, it was apparent that the trip back and forth between two places is getting more challenging.

Dad and I went to pick up groceries and took a drive around town and looked at homes that sold since they were home at Christmas and businesses that were new or changed hands. As we made it back to the condo with the groceries, we noticed a few expired items in the fridge. We tossed a few bottles of salad dressing, olives, pickles, beets and other items with expired dates. I think my mom was a little irritated with me for tossing food she thought was still OK. Hopefully the cleaned-out fridge will feel like a fresh start at home for the summer.

In many Midwestern states, Earth Day comes just before Arbor Day, which has roots dating to 1872.

Minnesota and many neighboring states celebrate Arbor Day on the last Friday in April, which this year is April 29. However, Arbor Day is observed on different dates in many other states, owing to differences in local climate.

The first Arbor Day celebration dates to 1872 in Nebraska and was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton, who moved to

A journalist and newspaper editor who served on the Nebraska board of agriculture, Morton also saw the need for windbreaks and soil anchors in the open prairies.

On Jan. 4, 1872, Morton suggested a holiday to plant trees the following April 10 that he called “Arbor Day.” Some one million trees were planted across Nebraska on that date. In 1885, Arbor Day became a legal holiday in Nebraska.

Morton, who died in 1902, later served as Secretary of Agriculture in the second administration of Grover Cleveland from 1893-97. One Presidential historian lauded Morton as “hardworking, efficient, and cost conscious.”

Meanwhile, his beloved holiday began to spread across the nation, first to Kansas, Tennessee, Minnesota, and Ohio. Eventually, Arbor Day was celebrated in all fifty states. In a 1970 Presidential proclamation, the last Friday in April was named as National Arbor Day. Variations of Arbor Day are also celebrated across the globe, including Australia, Japan, Israel, Korea, Iceland, and India.

Until recent years, Arbor Day was a noted date on the calendar, honored by many Americans and even the subject of a Peanuts animated television special in 1976.

However, the advent of Earth Day in 1970 and its subsequent popularity has surpassed Arbor Day, which is now relegated to only the most fervent tree-planters.

Arbor Day reflects a long-standing interest by many Americans in environmental issues. During his presidency, Theodore Roosevelt was dubbed the “Great Conservationist” for his protection of natural resources, including the designation of 125 million acres of national forests and the creation of the first national wildlife refuge, in Florida in 1903.

Three decades later, the Civilian Conservation Corps, a hallmark program of the New Deal during recovery from the Great Depression, was credited with the planting of 2 billion trees during its existence from 1933-42.

COVID-19 treatments widely available for people at high risk of severe disease COVID-19 treatments are now widely available and can be accessed at many pharmacies, clinics and health systems across the state. These treatments can help prevent severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19, especially when taken early.

Not everyone who tests positive for COVID-19 needs to take medication.

People who are at higher risk for severe illness are most likely to benefit from treatment, even if they have mild symptoms. People can be high risk for many reasons. Some of the most common risk factors are: being age 65 and older; obesity; having chronic medical conditions such as heart, lung, kidney disease or diabetes; being on treatment that suppresses your immune system; or pregnancy. If you are at higher risk, get tested as soon as possible after being in contact with a person who has COVID-19 or if you develop symptoms and talk to a health care provider right away. To be effective, treatment should begin as soon as possible after symptoms start or you test positive. It is important for a provider to review your medical conditions and current medications to determine which treatment is right for you as some COVID-19 treatments may interact with some medications.

“Early testing and treatment for COVID-19 can mean the difference between a hospital stay and being able to take medication at home for those who are at higher risk for severe disease,” said Dr. Ruth Lynfield, MDH state epidemiologist and medical director.

“COVID-19 medications are now more widely available and acting right away

by getting tested is important because treatments need to be started early to work.”

To get access to COVID-19 treatments, people can: • Talk to their health care provider to get tested and/or get a prescri tion if they already have a positive test.

“COVID-19 treatments are a very valuable tool in our toolbox, but preventing infection is more effective than treating infection. We have the tools to prevent infection, which prevents transmission and helps to keep levels of COVID-19 down in our communities,” Dr. Lynfield added.

Important tools to keep COVID-19 levels down include vaccines, boosters, washing hands often, getting tested if

you are sick or are exposed to someone with COVID-19, and staying home when you are sick. In addition, it is important to follow the CDC COVID-19 community level in your area, use well-fitting high-quality masks when needed or based on personal preference, and follow other public health guidance.

Dr. Lynfield noted that COVID-19 community levels are currently low across the state; however, there are still cases occurring, and we do not know if cases could increase again in the future.

Policy review Superintendent Lennox reported that the following policies were reviewed at the March 3 work session and no changes were recommended.

Community Education program update Karl Brown, director of community education, and Barb Schochenmaier, early childhood coordinator, presented an update on Community Education and Early Childhood programs that have been offered this school year and what will be offered the rest of the school year. The upcoming summer catalog was also presented.

2022-23 and 2023-24 school calendars The Board revised the 2022-23 school year calendar previously approved in February 2021. The new calendar does not contain any additional nonschool days. However, the revised calendar now reflects non-school days for the following observances: Monday, September 26: Rosh Hashanah Monday, October 10: Indigenous Peoples’ Day Friday, April 21: Eid The revised calendar contains no other significant changes to traditional breaks including MEA break, Thanksgiving break, winter break and spring break.

Approved school calendar: 2023-24 The Board approved the 2023-24 school year calendar.

FY 2021-22 budget amendments Bernice Humnick, executive director of business services, presented amendments for the FY 2021-22 budget. The District reviews budget variances and makes amendments when information becomes available. The Board approved three budget amendments for this reporting period as presented at the meeting. Summer operations projects Chris Paquette, director of operations, provided an update on upcoming summer operations projects across the District. Paquette detailed upcoming projects and noted there would be regular maintenance such as casework, painting and flooring repair across District buildings.

DOP Goal: Flexible furniture Darin Johnson, executive director of school management, and Chris Paquette provided an update on the District Operational Goal (DOP) of enhancing and expanding student access to new flexible furniture. Johnson gave an overview of the current realities of flexible furniture across the District and provided a timeline of continuing to use and provide flexible furniture across the District.

DOP Goal: Welcome and enrollment services Jen Lodin, executive director of student support and engagement, and Chris Paquette provided an update on the District Operational Goal (DOP) of centralizing the District’s welcome and enrollment services. Lodin shared that the welcome and enrollment center would be located at the District Center and would be operational at some point during the 22-23 school year. Paquette gave an overview of the construction and work on the space for the center.

Two Moorhead men accused of robbing bicyclist on trail

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following selected incidents in Shoreview: • A Shoreview man, 58, was arrested for assault April 3 in the 4000 block of Hodgson Road after Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called out to the scene of disorderly conduct. Two adult residents got into a verbal argument in the underground parking garage over cars that were scratched due to the opening of car doors. The argument became physical, and one of the participants had to be taken into custody.

• A Cannon Falls man, 34, was mailed a citation April 3 for assaulting a gas station attendant in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. after Minnesota State Patrol officers dropped him off at that station when he ran out of gas on the freeway. Officers even lent him a gas can and complimentary gas amounting to $7. But these actions did not make him grateful. Instead, he entered the business and started accusing staff of stealing from his belongings. When asked to leave, he confronted an employee, who he pushed down into a display. State Patrol officers provided deputies with information on the suspect for citation mailing purposes.

• Family members from Mounds View and Cottage Grove on April 4 reported an unsuccessful attempt to cash a fraudulent check at a bank drive-thru in the 400 block of Highway 96 after their checks and identification had been stolen from an auto the previous week.

• An employee of the Quick Stop in the 5900 block of Lexington Avenue N. reported her purse ransacked April 4 after a male suspect entered the store’s back office and stole all the money from the purse and store lockbox. Total financial loss was in excess of $900.

• A resident in the 1000 block of Royal Court on April 5 reported herself for falling victim to a phone scam April 5 after the caller claimed there was a problem with her computer and directed the complainant to buy $5,600 worth of gift cards.

As instructed, she gave the scam artist the numbers and activation codes on the cards.

• The catalytic converter of a Honda CR-V was reported stolen at 8:13 a.m. April 6, minutes after it was parked in a driveway in the 4000 block of Evergreen Place. The suspects were seen driving away in a tan 2003 Pontiac van with Montana plates. The case has been linked to other middle-of-the-workday catalytic converter thefts in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township where the same tan van was spotted in those incidents.

• The front license plate of a vehicle parked in the 1500 block of Park Street was reported stolen April 6.

• A suspect stealing items during March from Target in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. and other stores via the Shipt Shopper app was identified April 8 and a report sent to the city attorney.

• A St. Paul woman, 38, was cited April 8 in the area of Lexington Avenue N. and I-694 for gross misdemeanor tax evasion following a traffic stop for displaying the valid registration sticker of a different vehicle. Her own registration had expired in October 2020. The phony sticker was attached to her vehicle’s license plate with packing tape. The case has been forwarded to the city attorney for consideration of charges.

• A turkey was reported standing in the median of Highway 96 near Hodgson Road for seven hours April 8, although it was not reported whether the turkey was a male in full fan tail display that entire time. When deputies arrived on scene, they did not locate what they described as the “confused on how to cross the road” turkey, and neither did the animal control officer called out to the scene. Deputies speculated that perhaps “a wise chicken may have provided assistance.”

• A White Bear Lake woman reported an attempt on her catalytic converter’s life April 8 while she was visiting a friend in the 600 block of Tanglewood Drive. When they heard a loud noise outside, the complainant and her friend looked out the window to see another vehicle parked in the driveway. The vehicle fled after the thieves paused and saw the curtains twitch. The complainant ran outside and found the catalytic converter cut on one end and left dangling.

Meanwhile, a man from Langdon, North Dakota, reported the catalytic converter stolen from his Toyota Prius while it was parked in a hotel lot in the 5900 block of Rice Creek Parkway overnight April 9-10.

• Residents in the 1500 block of Park Street at 9:22 p.m. April 9 reported their front door security

Two Moorhead men, 41 and 42, have each been charged with simple robbery, a felony offense that carries a maximum jail sentence of 10 years and/or fine of up to $20,000, following an April 9 confrontation with a bicyclist on the Snail Lake Regional Trails.

At 8:40 p.m., Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office met with a visibly upset Shoreview man, 24, who told them he was biking southbound on the trails about 200 yards north of the walking bridge when he attempted to pass two males on foot.

When he tried to pass the males, they told him to “pick a lane.” He went around them and reached the walking bridge, which was his planned lap point. He turned around and headed north and back from where he had come. When he encountered the same males blocking the trail again, he asked them to “take a side.”

That’s when one of the males struck the biker in the face with something plastic, breaking his glasses. When the biker threatened to call 911, one of the males punched him on the left side of the head, causing a sharp pain in his ear and immediate hearing loss on that side. When the biker told them they were being recorded by his bike mounted GoPro camera, they broke the camera off the bike, went through his pockets and took his cell phone. The two men also removed the driver’s license from his wallet and one of them took a picture of it with his own phone, saying that if he went to the police, they would find him. He heard one of the males saying they should throw the GoPro into the lake.

The biker found some juveniles in the area and asked them to call 911. Deputies arriving on scene noted the biker’s bright red ear and stained clothing, along with the damaged bracket for the GoPro and computer.

When deputies caught up with the two men on the trail, south of I-694, they admitted to the encounter but provided a very different rendition.

They denied assaulting the biker and said the biker told them to get out of the way. They said that, in fact, the biker had assaulted them. After they met the biker coming the other way, the biker collided with the shoulder of one of them, the men said. They said that the walker didn’t fall down after the collision, but the biker did. The men denied taking anything from the biker to throw into the lake, and denied taking a picture of the biker’s license.

When deputies asked for the suspect’s phone code to look for the picture of the biker’s license on the phone, the suspect refused to provide it.

Police recovered the phone from the suspect, nonetheless.

Although deputies unsuccessfully searched the area for the biker’s missing phone and GoPro equipment, valued at $2,285, they did note the lake right next to the trail.

camera moved and a second camera removed from its mount and thrown into a nearby tree.

Their garbage can was also kicked over. The security camera, which was still functioning, provided footage of two males, one of whom was wearing a plaid shirt and hat.

• A resident in the 3200 block of Churchill Street N. on April 11 reported 13 pieces of outgoing mail stolen from his mailbox sometime between 9:00 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.

• A resident in the 3100 block of Vivian Avenue on April 11 reported three envelopes containing checks stolen from her mailbox some time between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. that day before the USPS worker was able to arrive to pick them up.

• A resident in the 3200 block of Vivian Avenue on April 11 reported outgoing mail containing a check stolen from the mailbox sometime between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. that day.

• Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched out to Gramsie Road and Victoria Street late April 11 on a report of two abandoned cases containing chainsaws found in that area. Deputies ran the items through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, where they came back as clear. The items were then placed into property.

• A Champlin man, 49, was arrested at 7:35 a.m.

April 12 in the 5900 block of Rice Creek Parkway on a Sherburne County felony probation warrant, taken into custody and transported to the Anoka County jail without incident. Deputies described the subject as cooperative.

• An uncooperative Circle Pines woman, 71, was trespassed from an establishment in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road at 7:15 a.m. April 14 for disorderly conduct after she didn’t register as a guest, ate breakfast anyway and refused to pay.

• A resident in the 800 block of Arbogast Street on April 14 reported the catalytic converter stolen sometime within the past three months from his 2008 Ford Econoline, which was parked in the driveway.

• A St. Paul man, 20, was arrested at 11:02 p.m.

April 14 in the area of County Road I and Hodgson Road for multiple offenses after deputies on patrol at McCullough Park conducted a computer check of a vehicle there. The mobile computer check showed the registered owner had an outstanding Hennepin County felony warrant. While deputies were conducting the routine search of the vehicle prior to arrest, they discovered several bags of a green leafy substance that could have been marijuana, mushrooms, and LSD and THC vape cartridges. The vehicle was towed and the male was booked at the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center. The case is under investigation, in part, to determine the identity of those found substances.

• A resident in the 900 block of Monterey Court reported criminal damage to her property after she discovered toilet paper and eggs thrown on her vehicle and at her home overnight April 14-15.

The complainant said she couldn’t imagine any possible motive, as she has no children over the age of 9 in the home as potential targets.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen from a Hyundai Santa Fe parked in a driveway in the 4300 block of Snail Lake Blvd. overnight April 15-16. A hat and saw blade left under the vehicle were collected as evidence.

• A St. Paul man, 43, was arrested April 16 on I-694 at Victoria Street on an active Washington County gross misdemeanor warrant following a traffic stop for speeding. He was transported to the Washington County Jail.

• A resident in the 4300 block of Virginia Avenue at 5:54 p.m. April 16 reported catching burglars in the act of stealing a purse and billfold containing credit cards from two unlocked vehicles parked in the driveway and in the attached open garage. The complainant exited his house and saw two males running down his driveway to a waiting black Kia Optima with no front plate and obscured rear plate that fled at a high rate. At the same time, he also noticed the passenger doors of both of the vehicles standing wide open.

La’ Unique Boutique makes customers feel ‘beautiful and appreciated’

Chrisitine Lindsey sews a formal dress for her upcoming fashion show in June.

A dream that Christine Lindsey has had since she was 8 years old will finally come to fruition this June.

Lindsey, 50, has owned La’ Unique Boutique located in Circle Pines for six years; however, her business has been around in some shape or form for two decades. She is busy preparing for her first big fashion show, which will feature four of her clothing collections. “This is a fantasy come true,” she said.

Lindsey is the second-youngest of 15 siblings.

When she was growing up, she was always interested in what her mother and sisters were wearing. “I used to dress up all the time. I would change 10 times a day,” she recalled.

Lindsey’s mother was into upcycling and redesigning, and taught her how to sew. “I had a lot of Barbie dolls and I didn’t have any clothes for them, so my mother would cut out a piece of fabric and show me how to make clothes for them,” she said. “With this one design, I made long dresses, short dresses, ponchos.”

“It gradually started becoming my passion,” she said. “By age 15, I thought I was Lisa Bonet on “The Cosby Show.” I would watch the show just to see what she had on.”

As a teenager, Lindsey made money doing hair.

After she graduated from high school, she attended cosmetology school but never finished. At the age of 30, she decided to pursue the passion she had long ago left behind and started a beauty salon in her home.

Over time she taught herself different sewing techniques, crocheting and knitting. “I did not go anywhere without my crochet needle in my bag,” she said, laughing. Lindsey recalls going to the library to check out sewing books and getting up early in the morning to watch sewing programs.

The business expanded to include alterations, jewelry and shoes, and kept outgrowing the spaces she used for her work. Eventually she found the Circle Pines location, where she is able to have a work space and a show room.

During the height of the pandemic, Lindsey wasn’t sure whether her business was going to

survive, because most of her income came from alterations for weddings and proms. She started making a variety of face masks, which she shipped all across the U.S. “It was a little depressing … I was sitting at the sewing machine making all of these masks,” she recalled.

Lindsey had to get a full-time job, but her business survived COVID-19 and is now thriving.

She is a full-time machine operator at Metro Mold & Design in Rogers by night, and a creator during the day.

Her two favorite things to do are making women’s blazers and deconstructing denim to turn the fabric into other items, like skirts. “I love taking something and ripping it apart — it’s just so satisfying,” she said.

Lindsey’s goal is to always make sure that her customers feel “wonderful and appreciated.”

Circle Pines resident Paulette Torgerson was Lindsey’s very first customer. She decided to check out the business the day the doors opened, which happened to be in the middle of a snowstorm.

“I saw the store and I was curious about what it was like,” she recalled. “It was just beautiful.”

Over the years, Torgerson has remained a loyal customer, and is now a friend. Lindsey has made Torgerson clothes, hemmed her husband’s pants, re-covered her chairs, made her curtains and more.

“She has made all of my clothes because I don’t like none of the clothes in the stores,” Torgerson

explained. “She will sell it off the rack, or if it doesn’t fit, she will make it the way you want it … I can walk in there and know I will get what I want.”

After the fashion show this June, Lindsey plans to change her business name to House of La’ Unique to encompass how her business has grown and evolved. She makes a variety of home accessories like chair coverings and has now tapped into making candles and painting.

Lindsey’s ultimate goal is to open up her own clothing factory.

U.S. Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) recently toured the Laborers Training Center (LTC) in Lino Lakes. The event was focused on ramping up workforce development and training for both traditional infrastructure investments from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act) passed by Congress last year, and for clean energy investments proposed in a budget reconciliation package still being debated in the Senate.

The LTC offers continuing education programs for its approximately 13,000 participating union members who need to maintain their certifications, develop their skills, and stay abreast of new trends and technologies. By May 6, construction of LTC’s second building on its Lino Lakes campus will be complete and add an additional 37,000 feet of training space.

GOLDEN GIRLS: A reflection of 82 years of friendship of 3 remarkable women FROM PAGE 1

“We were picked up for school by our teacher, Mrs. Keagan,” Pearson said. “And in eighth grade we had to walk to school in the cold weather,” Bourquin added.

Bourquin recalled breaking her arm playing at 6 C. Silver and Pearson helped her get home. “That’s what friends do,” Bourquin said.

While attending White Bear Lake High School, the girls started a teenage club at the Hawaiian Nite Club for teens to have someplace to socialize and have some fun.

After graduation, the three young women began living their adult lives but promised to stay in touch and keep the friendship alive.

Both Bourquin and Silver went to art school, while Pearson went to nursing school. All three worked at the Ramsey County Preventorium, which closed in 1953. The preventorium’s purpose was to prevent active disease in children through good nutrition and exercise. Many of the children were under-nourished, and some became orphaned because of tuberculosis in their families.

“I worked in the kitchen at the preventorium and taught the cook how to make pie crust,” Silver said.

Bourquin lived in White Bear Lake for 10 years and spent time in Cuba when her first husband was in the military. She raised six children and has a handful of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. “I’m pretty sure I have 17 grandkids but after awhile, I quit counting,” she laughed. She currently lives in Oakdale with her daughter.

Pearson went to nursing school and moved to California.

“It was so easy to get work anywhere you wanted, and a lot of us went to California,” Pearson said. “I didn’t live there that long, and we all ended up taking a bus back home after visiting Hollywood.”

When she was 27 years old,

Pearson met her husband of 66 years, Len, at a Swedish picnic.

The couple were married and lived in Paris, France, for approximately 14 months because the company Len worked for, 3M, sent him there for work.

“When we were looking for a house, there was a one-bedroom home for sale on Lake Jarvis, and Len didn’t think we should even bother looking at it since there was only one bedroom and we had one child at the time,” Pearson said. “But we went, and all I could see was the lake. And we bought it.”

Since Len was an engineer and worked with architects, the one-

Eleanor Pearson bedroom home soon was doubled in size. “It was my dream house,” Pearson said.

The couple are now living their golden years at Waverly Gardens in North Oaks. They have four children, six grandkids and are hoping for a great-grandchild soon.

After graduating from art school, Silver worked at a decorating studio for awhile and then worked for Ramsey County.

She got married to her husband, Howie, and have three children and five grandchildren.

“I went back to work in 1972 at what is now Regions Hospital and worked there for 14 years,” Silver said. “Boy, has that hospital grown!”

Howie passed away nine years ago. Silver is currently living in a Presbyterian Homes complex in St. Paul.

Throughout the years, the women said they have shared

sad and happy memories.

They’ve even had a few little fights along the way, but they always found a way back to each other.

When asked why their friendship has lasted so long, they all said that they really like each other and are still learning from each other.

“When I was little, my grandfather lived with us for awhile, and during the war he died and his funeral was on my birthday,” Bourquin said.

“Marilyn’s mother baked me a birthday cake and sent it over, and Marilyn never knew that for the longest time.”

“That’s the kind of stuff that we learn from each other,” she added.

One of their favorite memories is when Pearson came back from Paris, and the women got together at a restaurant on Dale Street.

“We had a lot to catch up on, and I just remember that we were laughing so hard,” Bourquin said. “It was a great time.”

The women, now in their early 90s, still get together for birthdays, luncheons and for any other excuse they can think of to see each other. They said when they get together, they pick up like they just spoke the day before, regardless of how long it has been or how far away they live from each other. They understand life is busy, and love is there.

“We understand each other, and we can’t hide much from each other and always come back together,” Pearson said.

“We’ve gotten along so well for so many years for the most part, and when we meet, we pick up right where we left off,” Silver added.

Sam Hentges, pitcher from Mounds View who broke into Major League Baseball with Cleveland last summer, has made the team again in Cleveland, whose nickname was changed to Guardians this year. Hentges has appeared in six games in relief roles, allowing just one run and four hits in six innings, striking out nine. The 25-year-old lefthander, who signed in 2014, had a 1-4 record in 35 games (12 starts) in his rookie season.

Mounds View picked up two victories this week, rallying past Cretin-Derham Hall 5-4 in eight innings at home Wednesday and cruising 7-0 at Forest Lake on Thursday.

Against CDH, Mustangs (2-1) tied the score 4-4 in the seventh on a solo home run by Drew Rogers, and won In the eighth when Connor Chervany’s hit down the left-field line drove home Leo Fleischaker, who had singled.

Fleischaker was 2-for-3 (double, two runs).

Blake Guerin pitched six innings (two runs, 11 strikeouts), and hit a sacrifice fly. Brandon Cook gave up two unearned runs in the seventh. Rogers pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and got the win. CDH’s Jack Taxdahl ripped a homer, triple and double, knocking in three runs.

Against Forest Lake, Fleischaker (four innings, five strikeouts) and Tyler Guerin (three innings, three strikeouts) combined for the shutout. The Mustangs’ first four hitters combined for seven hits and five RBI’s. Christo Alex started his sixth season in Mounds View tennis with a pair of straight-set wins at No. 1 singles. The 5-10, 170-pound senior (also a football defensive back) has made all-conference since eighth grade and teamed with younger brother Emmanuel last year to place second in the state in doubles. “Christo has been able to rely on his athleticism for a long time,” coach Scott Sundstrom said. “And now has developed his game to construct points, think better, and have more variety of shots.” Alex is a two-year captain and very vocal leader.”

Wrestling: Mustang awards announced The Mounds View wrestlers had six allconference picks after a 29-4 season including 7-1 in conference. The Mustangs were runners-up in the Suburban East and Section 4AAA. Named all-SEC were senior Brady Alquist; junior Jacob Solheim; sophomores Brady Swenson and Quin Morgan; freshman Colton Loween; and seventhgrader Caden Grenier. Getting honorable mentions were senior Jacob Praml; junior Ben Sparks; sophomore Apollo Ashby; and freshmen Brett Swenson, Ethan Swenson and Joey Muhlstein.

Team awards went to Solheim (most valuable), Grenier (top rookie), Sparks (most improved), and Loween and Morgan (most dedicated). The team got a Gold Award for academics with a team GPA of 3.64.
