Tour-de-Trails coming to Slice of Shoreview

Shoreview embodies nearly 90 miles of sidewalks and trails.

Shoreview is a bike friendly community with an elaborate trail system that allows residents to connect to parks, shopping areas and the community center.

The Bikes and Trails Committee will sponsor a booth at the Slice of Shoreview on July 22-24.

“We answer questions about bike safety and the trails in Shoreview,” Ted Haaf, of the Bikes and Trails Committee said.

“We also sponsor a bike ride at the Slice and it’s affectionally called the Tour-de-Trails.”

The ride will be held from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Sunday, July 26 and begin at the Deluxe

Corporation parking lot, 3680 Victoria Street N., underneath the Shoreview water tower. Riders must start by 8:30 a.m. and finish by 11 a.m.

The cost for the Tour-deTrails bike ride is $7 per person or $20 per family.

Participants must register

by July 21. Mark Stange, of the bikeways and trails committee, said riders can register online, at City Hall, or mail payment to City Hall. There will be no dayof registration this year.

Riders can check in anytime between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. “Route maps will be provided at check-in and riders will receive a free T-shirt,” Stange said.

For 10 years, Lynne Abbott’s Barbie collection was hidden from the world.

“The Barbies have taken a few international journeys,” Abbott said. “When my husband John and I sold our home in Sydney,

COPS&COURTS • COPS&COURTS • COPS&COURTS • COPS&COURTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents in Shoreview: • Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies at 1:23 a.m. June 5 conducted a traffic stop in the area of Rice Street and N. Owasso Blvd. on a Shoreview man, 30, for an outstanding felony warrant. The driver was advised and released.

• A St. Paul man, 21, was arrested for DWI at 2:47 a.m. June 5 in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N., after deputies responded to a report of an individual possibly passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle. The driver failed the standard field sobriety tests and registered a blood alcohol content of .159 on the Portable Breath Test (PBT).

He was taken in, and his vehicle towed. At the law enforcement center, the suspect registered a .14 on the Data Master Test within two hours of being arrested.

• A Minneapolis woman, 23, was arrested June 6 for criminal damage to property after she was observed spraying graffiti on the walls of The House Bike Shop in the 500 block of Shoreview Park Road, along with a male accomplice. The damage will cost more than $1,000 to repair.

• An Eau Claire, Wis. man reported a construction trailer stolen from its parking spot on the street in the 4700 block of Victoria Street N. overnight June 6-7. Information about the trailer has been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

• A Shoreview man, 44, was cited June 7 in the 1500 block of Lois Drive for violating an Order For Protection (OFP).

• A Crystal man, 35, was arrested shortly after midnight June 10 in the 1600 block of Pinewood Drive for disorderly conduct and for driving after cancellation due to behavior inimical to public safety, after deputies were called out to a suspicious party trying to break into a garage. Deputies located the male and conducted a traffic stop on him.

• A Shoreview man, 54, was arrested June 10 in the area of Fernwood Street and Ravenwood Street for obstruction of the legal process and for disorderly conduct, after deputies were dispatched out to the scene of an intoxicated male yelling and cursing at kids selling lemonade.

• A resident in the 1500 block of Oakwood Drive reported a burglary over the weekend of June 1012, after a garage door opener from an unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway was used to enter an attached garage. The house was not entered, but a missing firearm has been entered into the NCIC. • Speedway station # 3592 in the 3500 block of Lexington Avenue N. reported multiple cartons of cigarettes stolen overnight June 11-12 by two males seen on surveillance video. The case is under investigation.

• Deputies recovered a trailer stolen from MJ Electric, LLC, of Forest Lake June 13 near the intersection of Sherwood Road and Sherwood Trail, after an area resident noticed the trailer on an off road path in the woods. The trailer was returned to its owner.

• A medical bag and sunglasses were reported stolen overnight June 12-13 from a locked vehicle parked in an underground garage in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road. No damage to the vehicle was reported. Another victim reported golf shoes and a wallet stolen from her locked vehicle in the same garage over the same night.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen at 4 a.m. June 13 from a Toyota Sequoia parked in a driveway in the 900 block of Carlton Drive, after the victim was awakened by the sound of cutting, followed by that of a vehicle driving away.

• A Shoreview man, 62, was cited June 13 in the 1000 block of West Royal Oaks Drive for letting his dog roam at large, following a complaint of his dog charging at a walker and attempting to bite her. The complainant reported that the same dog had been successful at biting her spouse on Sept.

• A Shoreview man reported his vehicle stolen at 5:38 a.m. June 15 from the 1000 block of Gramsie Road, after he had met a female online. When he woke up in the morning, he discovered his car keys missing and the vehicle not at its spot in the underground parking area. After the vehicle was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, it was recovered by the Brooklyn Park Police Department the next day and towed to the impound lot for processing.

• Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies took custody of a box of ammunition June 15, after a resident in the 900 block of Arbogast Street found it in the basement and turned it over. The ammunition will be destroyed.

• The owner of a stolen vehicle reported finding it at 11:57 p.m. June 15 in St. Paul and driving it back home to the 100 block of Grass Lake Place.

The vehicle was properly recovered via data entry in the NCIC. • A St. Paul man reported another man for pulling a gun on him June 16, following a dispute during a basketball game at Bobby Thiesen Park in the 3500 block of Vivian Avenue. The suspect fled before deputies arrived.

• An aluminum trailer was reported stolen June 16 from a back yard in the 700 block of Harriet Avenue and entered into the NCIC. • An electric bicycle was reported stolen June 16 from a bike rack in an underground garage in the 1000 block of Gramsie Avenue. The bike had been locked, but not secured into a bike rack.

• A resident in the 600 block of Birch Lake N. reported mail stolen June 16, after he placed an envelope containing a check into the mailbox and raised the red flag. The mail was taken before the postal carrier arrived. Deputies advised the victim to cancel the check.

• The Edison at Rice Creek in the 5800 block of Rice Creek Parkway reported criminal damage to property June 17, after surveillance camera captured images of an adult male damaging walls in the apartment hallway. Management had declined to file criminal damages at the time of the report.

• A Circle Pines man, 23, was arrested June 17 and charged with domestic assault and assaulting a police officer, after deputies responded to a domestic in the 3500 block of Owasso Street and got punched in the face.

• Residents in the area of Amble Drive and Lexington Avenue N. on June 18 reported mailboxes in the development damaged by a vehicle, parts of which were left behind.

cyclists. The long route is 22.52 miles and riders bike through Rice Creek Park. Stange noted that riders can take marked short cuts to customize the ride.

“The cool thing about the Shoreview trails is you can go north and east and be on country roads that are nice and relatively safe from cars,” Stange said. “There are some really neat spots especially on the north end.”

Stange said arrows will be placed throughout the trails for guidance and there will be a rest stop with water available on the long route.

“It’s a fun for all community event,” Haaf said. “A lot of people are interested in our trails and some even move to Shoreview to enjoy the trails.

Summer weather brings ticks, disease risk “Any of these diseases can make people very ill and can have serious complications, so it’s important to take steps to prevent them,” said David Neitzel, a tick-borne disease specialist with MDH. Though blacklegged tick nymphs are much smaller than adults – they are about the size of a poppy seed – they can carry as many diseases as the adults. They can be difficult to see or feel, so it is especially important to use insect repellent to keep them from biting.

Late May through mid-July is highest risk period for Lyme and other diseases carried by Minnesota ticks.

If your weekend plans include walks through wooded or brushy areas, make sure you pack the insect repellent – and use it – to ward off tick bites.

Health officials warn that blacklegged ticks (also known as deer ticks) like to hang out in many of the same places as Minnesotans this time of year. Using insect repellent and taking other precautions can help reduce your risk of getting one or more of several serious diseases carried by ticks.

Mid-May through mid-July is the period of highest risk for blacklegged ticks in Minnesota. Memorial Day weekend is often the first time of year when large numbers of Minnesota residents venture into tick habitat, those brushy or wooded areas of Southeastern, Central and North Central Minnesota. Recent field sampling by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) found that the immature blacklegged ticks (called nymphs) are out now and will likely become even more active in the next few weeks.

The blacklegged tick can spread Lyme disease, as well as anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, and Powassan disease. In 2014, 896 Lyme disease cases were reported in the state, along with 448 human anaplasmosis cases and 49 babesiosis cases. The number of cases of tick-transmitted diseases for previous years can be found on the MDH website.

American dog ticks (“wood ticks”), which are very common in spring and early summer throughout wooded or grassy areas of Minnesota, can also carry diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF).

While RMSF is most common in the southern United States, a small number of RMSF cases have occurred beginning 7/3/2022 in Minnesotans who did not travel outside the state.

Frequently search your entire body for ticks that may look like a speck of dirt or freckle on your skin. If you find a tick on you, remove it immediately but properly. Our greatest adventure begins

N

ow that I am entering the second trimester, I can finally share the news! My husband Patrick and I are expecting our first child this December.

Keeping this secret for the last three months was INCREDIBLY difficult. There were so many times where I would almost say something, just to remember I shouldn’t spill the beans yet.

I did however tell some close family members and friends early. My mom’s reaction was pretty epic, and my sister is also thrilled to become an auntie. My grandparents are also so very excited to welcome their first great-grandchild.

I think my dogs, Frosty and Twinkie, are going to make great big sisters.

Twinkie however is going to have to come to terms with the fact that 100% of Out and everyone’s attention won’t always be on her. (She will always be my little spoiled About princess though.)

Shannon I knew we were going to shock some people, because I think many of them Granholm had given up on the thought of us ever having children and being fur parents forever. Patrick and I just celebrated our seventh wedding anniversary June 27.

My husband was ready to have children a couple of years ago, and was just waiting for me to say when. I’ve always known I was meant to be a mom; I just didn’t know when I wanted that to happen. I kept waiting for this big ‘aha’ moment and eventually realized that’s never going to happen for me. I’m never going to not be scared of all the unknowns. I just need to trust that what is meant to be will be — as corny as that sounds.

Perhaps one of the reasons it took me a while to be “ready” was because I was so worried I would have an unhealthy baby. Growing up with a sick father, I can’t tell you how many times I saw my dad get taken away in an ambulance or recovering in a hospital bed. To this day, it is very hard for me to visit a hospital, so that should make labor interesting.

I’m a very type A person but have learned to accept the fact that I can’t control everything. I’m still in the “terrified” stage, but hoping eventually that the excitement will outweigh the scared.

Even though having a newborn in the dead of winter won’t be much fun, I am a believer in signs. The fact that our first child is expected the same month my father passed away is not just a coincidence. My father always wanted to be a grandpa and was even pestering us for grandchildren before we got married. Now hopefully a month that has historically brought me a lot of sadness, will also bring me happiness too.

Destination playground

The new destination playground at Shoreview Commons is a must-visit attraction for families across the Twin Cities. While the playground construction is wrapping up, it’s already been a huge hit for kids and parents. The playground has seven distinct play areas including a tree house, hillside slides, swings, a climbing structure, ziplines, and more.

The park features a number of accessibility features making it a destination for all to enjoy.

The playground offers plenty of space to explore, while benches, chairs, tables and a covered picnic shelter offer a place to rest and relax. The skate park, located just east of the playground at Shoreview Commons, is also seeing a lot of use by both kids and adults alike. The entire Shoreview Commons development

represents Shoreview’s ongoing commitment to providing exceptional recreation amenities for our residents.

Friendship garden For those looking to enjoy a summer evening with a relaxing and peaceful stroll, come explore the new Friendship Garden and fountain at Shoreview Commons. The friendship garden offers a serene retreat right on the commons grounds.

Enjoy an up-close view of the water fountain and pond, bronze sculpture, flowering plants, and more. The garden is particularly beautiful the hour before sunset, when the water is sparkling.

This garden represents our community spirit – welcoming and friendly to all.

Farmers market & summer concerts One of my favorite summer traditions in Shoreview is our summer concert series.

These free concerts are held at Haffeman Pavilion on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and are perfect for the whole family.

The Backyard Band kicked off the season and a strong lineup is in place for the entire summer.

Our farmers market continues to bring the community together on Tuesday afternoons from 3 -7 p.m. and feature fresh, local

produce, handcrafted items, sweet treats, food trucks, and live entertainment. Join us in the lower-level parking lot of the community center all summer long.

Slice of Shoreview Mark your calendars for next month – the Slice of Shoreview, including the parade and the popular Tour-de-Trails bike ride – will take place July 2224. The Slice is a free, familyfriendly event held at Island Lake County Park. This year’s event will feature concerts, local vendors, inflatables, carnival rides, food trucks, a trampoline park, petting zoo, and more. This quintessential event caps off with fireworks on Friday and Saturday night.

I’m incredibly proud of all the recreation Shoreview offers, and I encourage you to enjoy these fun events and new destinations. Whatever your favorite summer recreation is, Shoreview is the perfect place to enjoy it. The City Council is committed to achieving our vision of a welcoming community that provides quality services, safe and beautiful neighborhoods, a vibrant economy, and exceptional recreation amenities. COUNTY BRIEF

• Starting Aug. 1, community center membership rates, rental rates and daily pass rates will increase between an average of 2% to 4% for Shoreview residents and 5% to 7% for nonresidents. Steve Benoit, director of parks and recreation said, these rates will still keep the community center very competitive with surrounding facilities. Council Member Emy Johnson said a reason for these increased rates is due to an increase of people using the community center, which means a need for additional staff.

• The city will continue to use the resident water use portal. The City Council recently accepted a five-year (2022-27) quote from WaterSmart in the amount of $18,067 for the first year, $18,593 for the second year, $19,120 for the third year, $19,734 for the fourth year, and $20,348 for the fifth year.

The total cost will be $95,861, which will be paid for using the city’s water utility.

• Election judges have been appointed for the upcoming 2022 primary election.

Elmer “Tom” E. Eckart of Shoreview Minnesota, passed away Tuesday June 14, 2022 at the age of 96.

He was born in Harvey, North Dakota on June 17, 1925 to Jacob Jr. and Lena Putz Eckart and lived his growing up years in Martin, North Dakota.

After high school he attended Fargo Business College and in WWII joined the Army Air Corp, followed by the U,S. Air Force Reserve retiring with the rank of major. His working career was in Chicago as a carpenter, contractor and commercial remodeler. After retirement and moving to Minnesota, he graduated from Lakewood (Century) College. He was a dedicated volunteer with Gideons International, AARP Taxaide, Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity and all the churches he was a member of over the years in 3 states. Locally, he has been a member of Centennial United Methodist Church, 1524 W. County Rd. C2, in Roseville, Minnesota, where his Memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 28, 2022: 1pm Visitation, 2pm Service, 3pm Reception.

Preceded in death by his wife Mildred and his sister, Helen Mae. Survived by his daughter Alexa (Mark) Umbreit, granddaughters Jen Patterson and Laura Umbreit and 3 great grandchildren; his brothers James and Rodney (Kathryn) Eckart; his sister Elaine Edinger; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Nancy March Nelson Nancy M. Nelson 89, passed away on June 19, 2022 at her home. Born in Minnesota on June 23, 1932, she was the daughter of Stuart and Becky March. She graduated from the University of Minnesota and went on to be a travel agent.

She was a member of Incarnation Lutheran Church in Shoreview, Minnesota. She spent many years singing in the choir. She was very active in the Junior League and spent many hours as a volunteer bird bander at the Wilder Nature Center. She was also an avid bridge player.

She will be remembered for her fierce personality.

Her motto in life was “big things come in small packages”.

She is survived by her two children. Becky (Steve) Rider and Eric Nelson. Five grandchildren, Amanda (Anthony) Carroll, Dane Rider, Bryant (Krista) Rider, Nick (Cassie) Nelson and Tony (Kendra) Nelson. Four great-granddaughters, Molly and Elizabeth Carroll, Ashby Nelson, and Madeline Rider. Nancy is proceeded in death by her husband Mike and her brother Peter March.

Nancy will be buried in Minnesota alongside her husband Miles. Donations can be made to Hope Hospice at HopeHCS.org

Mustangs’ Skelly 2nd in Guerin, Rogers get metro baseball state 1600, but legs gave honors; four Mustangs all-SEC out in 800

This was not the way anyone envisioned Will Skelly would finish his great high school track career for Mounds View— in last place in the 800-meter finals, a race he won at state last year.

The Mustang boys collected seven medals in five events and placed seventh in the team standings with 35 points June 9 and 11 at St. Michael-Albertville.

Andover won with 62.2 points.

“Will just ran out of gas. You can thank Dan Vanacker for that, for making Will run so hard in the 1600,” said Mustang coach Ross Fleming, referring to a Forest Lake threesport all-state athlete.

“You can also thank Vanacker for making Will run the fastest mile in school history.”

In the 1600, less than an hour prior, Skelly, hoping for a double at the state meet, ran a 4:11.05, lowering his own school record, but got passed late by Vanacker and could not catch him.

Vanacker, who hit the tape in 4:10.27, is a distance runner with a football player’s build. He placed third in the state cross country meet and won the 152-pound state championship in wrestling. He was not to be denied in his last high school race.

“Down the last straight-away I was giving it everything I had,” Skelly said. “I saw his shadow on my left and I did everything I could to not let him pass

me. When he did pass, I just couldn’t keep up the pace with him.”

Skelly had previously beaten Vanacker in the conference cross country meet, and in a 1600 race and a 4x400 earlier in the track season.

In the same race, Mustang junior Elliott McArthur placed fifth in a personal-record 4:14.46. The top eight set PR’s, and four of the top five were from the Suburban East Conference. McArthur, a junior who placed second in both the 1600 and 3200 last year, took seventh in the 3200 Thursday with 9:21.16.

In the 800, Skelly, who won last year in 1:53.56, had the fastest prelim time, 1:53.87, and led in the finals after one lap, but he dropped back to ninth place in 2:02.06.

“My legs just gave out in the second lap,” said Skelly. After the grueling 1600, he said, ”I didn’t feel well before the race even started, but I wanted to race it, just to see what I could do. It didn’t turn out how I wanted, but I wouldn’t change what I did.”

Victor Lelinga of the Mustangs churned to fifth place in the 800 in 1:56.13. The winner was Buffalo’s Jared Gregoire in 1:55.01.

Skelly took himself out of the last race of the meet, the 4x400. The quartet of Max Derosier (his replacement), Dylan Wheeler, Lelinga and McArthur placed fourth in 3:21.48, with McArthur’s brilliant 49-second anchor lifting them from seventh place.

One other Mustang

Blake Guerin, Mounds View senior, garnered a pair of metro-wide baseball honors for the 2022 baseball season. Drew Rogers, sophomore, was also named all-metro.

Guerin, 6-foot-7 pitcher and third baseman, signed by Iowa, was named Pioneer Press metro player of the year, and was named to the Star-Tribune all-metro first team.

Guerin slammed nine home runs and drove home 37 runs in 25 games, hitting .333, also notching three doubles and 17 runs. On the mound, he posted a 4-1 record, two saves, and 1.46 earned-run-average in 47 1/3 innings, with 46 strikeouts and just eight walks.

Rogers was named to the Star-Tribune all-metro second team. He batted .449 with six homers, seven doubles, 23 RBI’s, and 18 walks. Rogers has already committed to Georgia Tech.

All-Suburban East Conference honorees were Guerin, Rogers, senior Maddox Folska and senior Landon Both. Getting honorable mentions were seniors Brendan Goldman, Leo Fleischhacker, and Brandon Cook.

The Mustangs, coached by Nik Anderson, were 16-9 overall, section runners-up, and 12-6 in conference for third place.

The Mounds View 4x800 relay team that set a state record in May ran three seconds faster and placed third in the Nike National meet on June 18 in Eugene, Oregon.

The quartet of Elliott McArthur, Maximus Gregory, Victor Lelinga and William Skelly finished in 7:36.72, each turning in a personal record split.

There were 12 entrants. The top two teams were The Dale (IL) with 7:32.15 and Valley Project (NJ) with 7:32.79.

“All four kids had PR’s and we got third place, earning All-America status,” coach Ross Fleming said. “So it went pretty well.”

Skelly also placed 10th in the mile run with a time of 4:11.98. McArthur placed 27th in 4:15.04. (In high school national meets, they normally run mile and two-mile races, rather than the 1600 and 3200). Skelly ran similar times twice in the track season, at the Wazyata Invitational and at the state meet where he placed a close second.

In the 4x800, the Mustangs were running were running second or third throughout and wound up third.

“We would have liked to have won, of course, and stand at the top of the podium,” said McArthur, “but, to finish third in the nation, and for all of us to ‘PR’ again, we were pretty happy and excited.”

The Mustangs were invited to Nike nationals after posting a state record 7:39.91 time in their conference meet on May 26 in Cottage Grove, the best time in the nation at that point, according to Nike. By nationals, they had the second-best time in the nation

The conference and national meets were the only times this quartet ran together. Their time at nationals stands as the state record. The previous state record of 7:41.94 had stood since 1998, set by a Stillwater quartet at Nike Nationals.

Skelly will continue his track career at Duke University. Gregory will run for St. Thomas. McArthur and Lelinga will be seniors this fall.

DREAM HOUSE: Venturing into ‘The Barbie Room’ FROM PAGE 1

“There are Barbies of all shapes and sizes,” Abbott said. “I also have 200 more Barbie dolls that are not on display in the Barbie room.”

Abbott said she started collecting Barbies years ago for one of her daughters.

“My middle daughter Kristi is one of the reasons I became interested in Barbies,” Abbott said. “When she was 2, Kristi discovered Barbies when her older sister was given a Barbie who played with it for about five minutes. Then Kristi played with it for about three hours and she was hooked.”

Kristi then would get Barbies for Christmas and birthdays. She had her Barbie collection by time she was 14 years old.

One year the family went on vacation and Kristi put all of her Barbies in a backpack and left it in the hotel on the way to the airport.

“She was devastated because she lost all of her ‘80s Barbies,” Abbott said. “Right after that I found out I had a form of cancer and I decided I would like to leave a legacy for each of my children. I asked Kristi if she wanted me to build her a Barbie collection and reinstate all of her ‘80s Barbies. And that opened up Pandora’s box.”

After a year of radiation therapy, Abbott was cancer-free. She continued to find Barbie dolls for Kristi in Australia.

“When I started doing this collection for Kristi, the availability of dolls in Australia was just not there,” Abbott said. “So, I started purchasing them when I came back to America.”

John, a Mounds View High School graduate, had family in Minnesota so the couple traveled back and forth from Australia to the U.S. Before they retired, the couple owned a management training business.

“We used to run leadership programs and finance programs and one of our big clients was Mattel in southeast Asia,” Abbott said. “I took a tour of the Mattel factory and was amazed how Barbies are made.”

“Like the natural eyelashes where a woman sews the hair eyelashes in and then another person cuts them according to the length they want for that each particular doll,” she added. “My appreciation for them grew when I got to see what went on behind the scenes.”

Some of the Barbie dolls and accessories in the Barbie room include — holiday, Disney, Marilyn Monroe, Skipper, Ken, “Gone with the Wind,” Barbie vehicles and a 1961 all cardboard Barbie house.

There’s even a tree with hanging Barbie ornaments in the Barbie room.

One of Abbott’s favorites in the collection is the ethnic Philippines Barbies. “They are extremely beautiful and unique,” she said.

“In the beginning, I wasn’t quite as properly focused on what to collect,” she said. “Occasionally I would see something that would grab my fancy.”

For the last few years Abbott has focused on collecting vintage Barbie dolls.

“It has been an education and I see the influence it had on Kristi where she’s gone with her career,” Abbott said. “She went on to get an arts degree and an MBA. Now she’s a fully-fledged artist. I think Barbie had something to do with that.”

Minnesota Sheltie Rescue: Nearing 1K dogs placed

A Minnesota dog rescue is nearing a significant milestone — finding forever families for 1,000 dogs.

Minnesota Sheltie Rescue (MNSR) is a nonprofit organization that helps find homes for — you guessed it — shelties.

The organization’s founder, Karen Marquardt, developed a love for shelties after college, when she lived with a roommate who owned a sheltie and sheltie-mix.

Marquardt said shelties remind some people of Lassie, the dog featured in the T.V. series of the same name that ran from 1954 to 1973.

“Like everyone, I knew Lassie, and Lassie is not a sheltie, Lassie is a collie. They are a different breed, but they have a similar look,” Marquardt said. “They are the most loving, smart, happy and loud dog (they bark a lot). I got kind of attached, so then when it was time for my first dog, it had to be a sheltie.”

Marquardt has owned seven shelties. She currently owns an 8-year-old female and a 3.5-year-old male.

Back in the early 2000s, Marquardt, along with a couple of friends, were informally helping shelties.

They would hear of a sheltie that needed a new home, and work to find a good placement.

“Somewhere along the way a couple of dogs came to our attention that had more severe issues — one had been hit by a car and needed surgery, and another was heartworm-positive,” she recalled. “At that point, we (felt) that we needed to do something a little bit more formal to become a nonprofit, so when those kinds of situations came up we would have the ability to appropriately raise money to cover that kind of stuff.”

In 2003, MNSR officially earned its nonprofit status. Since inception, the organization has rescued and placed approximately 985 shelties. Marquardt said that during the 2008 housing crisis, the rescue was taking in 70 to 80 dogs a year, but that number has come down to 10 to 15 dogs a year, a much more manageable number for a small, all-volunteer organization.

MNSR is foster-based rescue organization, meaning it does not have a central shelter where dogs are housed. Instead, all of the dogs in the program live with families in temporary foster homes while they await their forever homes. The organization is highly involved in educating people about the breed.

“The thing with shelties is there is a high risk of flight. They are smart, and when circumstance in their lives change, for many of them their tendency is to bolt. We do a lot of education about that when we are working with fosters and adopters,” Marquardt explained.

In an effort to not only help its dogs, but other shelties across the state, MNSR launched the Lost Shelties MN Facebook page to help owners reunite with their runaway sheltie.

Because shelties often have unique needs and can be very shy, they often need to be in foster homes longer than some other breeds.

“We need to really understand who that dog is.

When they come in, if they are worried, shy or shut down, you don’t really know what you have for a while. You need to let them develop, let them gain some trust, to know what (you) have, and then we can place that dog with a better fit.”

microchip and any other veterinary care they may require.

Currently, the rescue has about 16 dogs in foster homes. Of those, five of those are “forever fosters,” meaning they will spend the rest of their lives in a foster home. Those dogs are either senior dogs or have unique medical needs.

Circle Pines groomer Deb Molin, who owns Personal Touch Pet Grooming, often volunteers her services to the rescue. She actually groomed Kobe, MNSR’s first rescue, who was adopted by a Circle Pines family.

Those adopters gave Molin information about the rescue, and Molin reached out and offered her services free of charge.

“The grooming is something I can offer, and I know they appreciate it. They can spend their money on more important things,” Molin explained. “I love being able to see some of my ‘grooms’ adopted out. I hope that my services help the dogs find their forever homes.”

Marquardt said what Molin has done is extraordinary. “I take my own dogs to Deb, because she is that good and it is not cheap. It is a lot of work to

groom a sheltie,” she said. “She just does the most beautiful job. She is gentle, she’s patient and she understands shelties. Grooming is not as expensive as the vet, but 20 shelties a year getting groomed, it adds up.”

Molin said she enjoys seeing the transformation of the dogs. “Sometimes I can see the before and after in the dog’s behavior and attitude before they leave my shop. You can see it in their eyes. They perk up and look proud of themselves. Warms my little groomer’s heart.”

DNR BRIEFS DNR hosts webinar about Minnesota’s draft wolf plan update Anyone interested in learning more about the Department of Natural Resources’ draft wolf plan update is invited to an informational webinar at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 13. The updated plan includes summary information about Minnesota’s wolf population and history of wolves in the state. It details the diverse and changing public attitudes about wolves, the legal status of wolves, tribal perspectives on wolves, and ways to support a healthy and resilient wolf population while minimizing conflicts between humans and

wolves. The draft plan also sets out a framework for future decisions about whether to hold a wolf hunting or trapping season.

The DNR welcomes comments on the draft plan through 4:30 p.m.

But if bears can get access to concentrated,

high-calorie, easily accessible foods around people’s homes and campsites, they are quickly enticed away from their natural food sources.

It is important to secure anything that a bear would consider food.

Don’t condition bears to associate your home or campsite with an easy meal by leaving out unsecured garbage, birdseed or pet food. Learn more about how to reduce property damage, and the chance of humanbear conflicts, on the DNR website (mndnr.gov/LivingWith_Wildlife/ Bears) and BearWise online resources (BearWise.org).

Get your fishing questions answered on DNR fishing webpage Anglers with fishing questions can find answers on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ fishing page (mndnr.gov/Fishing).

The page answers questions like: For which species can I fish? What kind of bait is legal? What kind of fish can I keep? It also is a mobile-friendly destination for information on when, where and how to fish.

Budgets Bernice Humnick, executive director of business services, presented the 2022-23 projected budgets for nutrition services, community services, capital outlay and debt service funds. While these budgets are an integral part of school operations, they operate financially in separate funds or reserves. These budgets will be included in the final budget document that will be presented to the Board for approval at the June 21, 2022, School Board meeting. Enrollment and class sizes Enrollment projections for the 2022-23 school year indicate an anticipated enrollment of 11,126 students. Next fall’s class size projections do not exceed current class size averages.

2021-22 District Operational Plan Superintendent Lennox gave a final report on the 2021-22 District Operational Plan (DOP). The DOP is the annual administrative work plan of the District. It is directly related to the District’s vision and to the School Board’s strategic directions for the year.
