Bike service stations offer bicyclists help on trails

Bicyclists riding the trails in Shoreview can now make a pit stop to service their bikes.

“There are three bike service stations located throughout Shoreview,” Shoreview Public Works Staff Engineer David Yang said. “The Ramsey County Shoreview Library, Lake Owasso County Park and Rice Creek Regional Trail Park off of Lexington Avenue by the off-leash dog park.”

Yang said another bike service station is being installed at the west access to the Rice Creek Regional Trail Park off County Road I. It should be completed within the month.

The Shoreview Bikes and Trails Committee teamed up with the Ramsey County Shoreview Library and received a $7,400 grant for the bike service stations. The grant was from the Shoreview Community Foundation.

“Teaming up with the library reaches more people and has more impact,” Yang said. “Our grant application goal was to break down barriers and get people out on the trails and use them more.”

Alyssa Stevenski, teen services librarian at the Ramsey County Shoreview Library, said the bike service stations offer accessibility and safety to bicyclists.

“Folks can come and do some repairs on their bikes without having to buy all the tools,” she said.

“Since Shoreview is bike- and trail-friendly, we here at the library are going to offer some programming.”

Stevenski said the first scheduled program is “Books and Bikes,” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at the Shoreview Library.

With the session in the rearview mirror, Press Publications reached out to area legislators to find out how it went. Each senator and representative was asked to provide a summary of the session in 350 words or less.

The Mustangs blazed eight laps at Park High School in Cottage Grove, all four of them with personal best splits, hitting the finish line in seven minutes, 39.91 seconds, which shattered the school record of 7:45.95 that’s stood since 2007, and the conference meet record of 7:59.28 set by the Mustangs in 2019.

They were 2.3 seconds under the previous 2022 national best of 7:41.59 by Ridge (NJ), set April 28, and broke the 24-year-old Minnesota record of 7:41.94 set in 1998 by Stillwater at Nike Nationals. (That was the third-oldest boys state record behind the long jump record, 1982, and high jump, 1973.)

ADITI Did you know that plastic bags cause diseases such as cancer? Cancer Alley is a stretch of eighty miles along the Mississippi River where petrochemical factories are found. Due to pollution there, a large number of people developed cancer.

Hi, my name is Aditi and I believe that plastic bags should be banned.

My second reason is that plastic makes the planet dirtier. Most of it ends up in waterways or landfills.

For all the plastic that was ever made, only 9% of it has been recycled.

My third reason is that they take decades or even CENTURIES to decompose. Think about it like this — someone litters a piece of plastic when you're born, then it stays there as you grow up, and makes the world dirtier, it decomposes after you die.

Lastly, plastic bags hurt animals! They get tangled up in them and die! Some animals try to eat the plastic bags and choke on them.

Those are all the reasons why I support banning plastic bags. Please support me to ban plastic bags and to save the earth!

Students from Eric Ellefson's fifth-grade class at Island Lake Elementary School wrapped up their reading / writing unit around argument and advocacy. The two final projects they completed are a debate and writing editorials or letters advocating for their side of the argument. Below are letters to the editor with one of three topics – extreme sports, plastic bottles and zoos.

ALEC I believe that extreme sports are not worth the risk and I have some reasons why. For example, many, many people die per year doing extreme sports. This is one of the reasons why I believe that extreme sports aren't worth the risk. A solution to this could be that we just take extreme safety measures, but even that wouldn’t help with people risking their lives while participating in extreme sports at home, and if we did take extreme safety measures, there would still be a small chance of injury or death.

I think what we need to do is make it so certain areas, such as mountains or cliffs, are reserved for people that are either climbing them or sightseeing.

This would prevent people that like to participate in extreme sports from jumping off either with a motorcycle or with a parachute, as they could die or get injured from this.

In conclusion, I think extreme sports are not worth the risk, as may people die or get injured.

BRINLEY Did you know that zoos are bad for the animals and their survival. You might disagree with me now but after you read this your mind will be changed.

Hi, my name is Brinley, and I’m not a supporter of zoos. I dislike zoos because they force animals to perform for the public and I think animals don't deserve to be treated like that. Don't get me wrong. I love going to zoos and seeing the animals, but studies show that the animals at zoos have too much human interaction. Excess human interaction gives them anxiety and makes them stressed and that can lead to them not eating , pacing excessively, and not sleeping.

Zoos also kill surplus animals. When a zoo has too many animals, they try to give them to other zoos. But sometimes, they need to kill them. This makes me disappointed.

The animals need our help. Now's our time to take action. If we don't take action now zoos, many animals will continue to suffer. If we get rid of zoos, those innocent animals' lives will be spared.

This is why I think we should boycott zoos. If you want to help those animals go to state parks, national parks, and nature centers.

ADAM Space is the final frontier for humanity, and exploring it will advance us further than anything before. Space encourages a lot of people to explore, and I believe we should pursue exploring it.

I am 11 years old, and space has inspired me to learn and explore everything around me. Space teaches me so much about the world as it is now. I love learning about space, and I think we should explore it. Space exploration gives us lots of advancements in technology and medicine.

Earth is running out of space, so we need to start exploring it further by colonizing the Moon and Mars.

AVERY Did you know that zoos are actually really bad for the survival of animals? You may think the opposite, but there are a lot of reasons animals die in zoos. Animals in the wild die from natural causes.

But nothing about zoos is natural.

My name is Avery and I am in fifth grade. I am not a supporter of zoos. I don’t support zoos because I care about animals. I love animals, and I think that seeing animals I would never get to see up-close is so cool, but it’s not worth it if they’re getting taken from their natural habitat and shoved behind bars for a sudden controlled life. For example: In 2009 the UK Government allowed 146 penguins to be captured from the South Atlantic where they had to endure a seven day long boat journey, those who survived were given to a wildlife dealer to get sold to Asia. And these animals had no choice. They were taken and there was nothing they could do about it.

The animals have no choice, but you do. You can stop supporting zoos, and stop donating to them.

Animals just aren’t meant to be used for entertainment. Zoos in Europe kill somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 animals each year. And that’s just an estimate. According to an article from the New York Times, the Neumünster Zoo in northern Germany killed, sold, and fed all their animals in their zoo, until there was only ONE polar bear left standing of all the animals in the zoo.

If no one takes a stand, more and more animals will die and be unwillingly forced from their natural habitats. You can take a stand, and save millions of animals' lives, by boycotting zoos.

AIVEY Did you know that zoos are bad for the environment because zoos treat animals unfairly. My name is Aivey. I am a fifth grade student at Island Lake Elementary, and I do not support zoos.

One of the reasons I don’t support zoos is because of the way they get their animals. Some zoos take animals from the wild. This is unfair and harmful to the animals. Another way they acquire them is by getting them from other zoos. The animals are shipped and that causes them to get distressed and have discomfort.

Yes, I think seeing animals up close is cool, but it is not worth it. I think that we should all try to ban zoos. If we don't ban zoos a lot more animals' lives are at stake.

HAVEN Did you know that 80 percent of people believe that animals in zoos are receiving poor treatment according to an article on TeenInk.com called the Modern Zoo? Animals are not treated fairly in zoos and I am trying to make sure that doesn't happen.

My name is Haven, a fifth grader at Island lake Elementary School. I love animals a lot, and I like going to the zoo to see all the animals. But it also makes me really sad when I see mistreated animals in enclosures that barely fit them. I care about how they feel and I know they don’t like being in zoos.

They would want to be home in their natural habitat! Just like how I feel when I go on a vacation I get homesick! We need to do something!

Animals suffer from Abnormal Repetitive Behavior. All the zoos do to help is give them tranquilizers and anti- depressants to control their problems.

That doesn’t help! Animals are in enclosures are way too small for them and they become even smaller with the less money the zoo has! There are many many more ways zoos are bad. I can't even begin to describe them!

I hope the examples I gave you of the mistreatment of animals has changed how you think about zoos.

COLIN Don't get rid of plastic water bottles. If you do, people will consume more sugary, bad for you plastic bottle drinks. Plus you should drink a certain amount of water every day to stay hydrated. The amount you should drink is around 64-ounces of water a day. Plastic water bottles taste good and you need water in your body for survival. Tasting good things makes you feel good.

If you say, “Well you can't reuse them,” you’re wrong. It's not bad to reuse plastic water bottles.

And if you save them up you can make something cool with your garbage! In my old school we had days where we went to the library and made things out of junk the school had, and I made some cool toys and useful fun things that you can stick on your door.

In case of an emergency like in a natural disaster, water bottles play a big role in the disaster response. Think about this, if your water stops working or gets contaminated you’re in trouble.

Bottled water can help. It’s clean and doesn’t go bad so you can even plan ahead if you want to. Plastic bottles are lighter in weight than glass bottles reducing energy and costs needed to ship them.

We shouldn’t ban water bottles. They help keep us safe and healthy.

(From page 2) CHLOE Did you know that plastic bags aren’t that harmful to the environment? Think about it, if we ban plastic bags then it wouldn’t really do anything compared to all the garbage in the environment!

My name is Chloe and I am a fifth grade student at Island Lake Elementary and I wanted to bring up this topic because I have been learning about plastic bags in school and I wanted to share it with Shoreview, so hear me out. Plastic bags only take 1.6kg of carbon dioxide emissions while paper bags take 5.5kg of CO2 emissions. Reusable bags take 272kg! Also, it takes seven truckloads of paper bags to deliver the same number of plastic bags. Plastic bags overall are the best option.

Plastic bags are also 100% recyclable and recycled plastic bags are used to make new plastic bags and products, so if we can get enough people to recycle them we can help the environment and make new products.

Help me spread awareness about the good things in plastic bags, tell your family and friends if you can. I hope you changed your mind about plastic bags. If not, that's ok.

JONAS I am arguing that extreme sports are worth the risk.

People are not going to give up. They know the limits and they are trying to push what is humanly possible.

I am a fifth grader at Island Lake Elementary School. I think extreme sports should not be banned because they are a great way to make friends. The extreme sports community is supportive and encouraging. Watching competitions even the athletes cheer for each other. You don’t see this in other sports like baseball.

If extreme sports were banned, a lot of people would lose their passion. Competitions would get canceled and people wouldn’t be able to watch them. People would lose their jobs.

Even if extreme sports were actually banned, people would still do them. People might end up getting in trouble. They are not going to give up.

SAWYER Did you know that zoos are bad for the environment?! Zoos are harmful to wildlife and will hurt animals. I am a fifth grader, and I think that we should ban zoos.

Zoos kill surplus animals or sell them to other zoos and that can cause stress to the animals when their environment is moved. In 2003 the UK government allowed one hundred forty six penguins to be captured from the South Atlantic to be put in cages at the zoo. That is decreasing the wild animal population.

Animals can get zoochosis. The symptoms are head bobbing, pacing, over grooming and throwing up. When it happens it is a bad look for the zoo so they will either bring them to the animal vet or they will get rid of or sell the animal. Zoochosis is caused by too small of cages so they do not have enough room to move around.

Zoos will even kill the animals at the zoo and feed them to the other animals at the zoo like 2014 when they killed a two year-old giraffe and fed it to four lions at Copenhagen zoo.

And that is why I think we should boycott zoos or even donate more money to the zoos or use the money to help make the enclosures larger and better,for health or even more food for the animals so they do not need to feed the animals other animals in the zoo.

RAYVEN Do you drink out of plastic bottles? And if yes do you just throw it away or recycle it? This is a genuine question. Well, 35% of people say they don’t recycle at all. It is sad to see that our air, towns, cities, farms, earth, even space, are getting polluted.

Hi, I'm Rayven, a regular 11 year old, Black female. I bet the situations I'm talking about are going to affect my future. I think single use plastic should be banned.

Do you know how much trash there is in the ocean? There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic trash in the ocean! That's right people - plastic pollution is a very big thing. Animals are getting sick and some are even going extinct because of the plastics.

They are eating it, and it might even get wrapped around their necks killing them.

If we banned plastic bottles we can change the future and save lives. A toxic substance called leachate is created when plastics are put in landfills.

Toxins leach out of the plastics and enter water. It then enters ecosystems where birds, ducks, and fish can get sick and die. If people drink it they could get sick and die, too.

DAVRION Extreme sports should be banned because lots of people get hurt. Extreme sports are not worth the risk. Bungee jumping and skydiving is really dangerous.

A lot of people enjoy extreme sports because they are fun. They say it builds confidence and makes friendships. But other sports offer these benefits, too. For example, joining a basketball team is a great way to make friends as well without the risk of getting seriously injured or worse.

VANA Hi, I am a fifth-grade student at Island Lake who believes we should ban plastic bags.

Plastic bags are really bad for human health. The stuff they use to make plastic bags contains chemical additives such as endocrine disruptors.

Plastic bags are also non-biodegradable. I hate it when I see plastic bags floating around the lake. I also notice plastic bags flying along the road when I'm outside. Around 300 to 700 plastic bags pass through the hands of an American in just one year.

Animals also get tangled up in the pollution of plastic bags. When animals get tangled up they can get infections and sometimes lose their limbs. Even if they don't lose their limbs or get an infection they are less capable of finding food.

This is unbelievable, but so many animals are dying of starvation because they eat too much plastic and end up not being able to digest it. As a result, they starve and die with toxins still in them.

We can ban plastic bags because we still have paper bags which decompose in water which will prevent killing even more animals so please save those animals.

Facts: • Plastic bags kill over 100,000 marine animals per year.

• There are 8 million pieces of plastic that enter the ocean every day that are the same amount of weight as a 747 jumbo jet.

• The Pacific Ocean's garbage patch is around 1.6 million square kilometers that's bigger than Texas.

Sept. 13, 1932 - May 13, 2022. Age 89 of Shoreview, died on Friday, May 13. Preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Richard. Survived by children Linda (Gerald) Mulhern, Michael (Greta) Wedell, Lisa (Masami) Ueki and Laura (Gabe) Jenkins; 9 grandchildren; former exchange student, Karin Andersson.

A graduate of St. Paul’s Ancker Nursing School, Peggy was a medical researcher at the University of Minnesota and an occupational health nurse at MSI Insurance Companies.

A Shoreview resident since 1961, Wedell served as a Ramsey County Deputy Sheriff Community Affairs Officer and volunteered at the Shoreview Historical Society, Shoreview YMCA, and Como Park Conservatory. She established the Moms & Tots Skating Program and the Shoreview 4-H Club.

She received the Shoreview Citizen of the Year award in 2010.

Celebration of Peggy’s life will be held on Sunday, June 12, 3-5 p.m., at the Richard A. Wedell room in the Shoreview Community Center, 4600 N. Victoria St, Shoreview. A private burial service for family and close friends will take place at Fort Snelling. Memorials preferred to the Shoreview Historical Society, Shoreview Community Foundation or the Jerauld County Heritage Museum.

SADIE Did you know that banning plastic bags would really be worse for the environment? People all around think that we should ban plastic bags because they are harmful to the environment, but really they are better than other alternatives.

I am Sadie, a fifth grade student at Island Lake Elementary. I don’t think people should ban plastic bags. Many people are worrying about animals getting trapped in plastic bags, pollution, and getting sick from them. But there are many problems involved in banning them as well.

Many trees are chopped down in the process of making paper bags. Cotton bags use 272kg of environmental resources compared to plastic bags only using 1.6kg of environmental resources. Plastic bags are also easier to transport, make less environmental impact than paper or cotton. If we ban them it would take jobs away from many people.

I hope what I wrote changed your point of view on plastic bags. It would be great if we kept them instead of banning them.

Memories made with my dad

ather’s Day is right around the corner. It’s a day to honor all fathers even if they have passed away.

I am lucky that my father is still in my life. He turned 80 in April and can still drive, fish and go to the casino. He has a few health problems and calls it, “a general wearing out process.” He didn’t like it when he couldn’t bowl anymore on his weekly Tuesday night league. He was in that league for over 30 years.

I am one of my dad’s three daughters.

Since he didn’t have a son yet, we girls were thrown into the world of sports. We were playing little league when there were not many girls playing sports at the time. There wasn’t any sport my dad wasn’t good at. I remember when he beat Noelle’s my brother-in-law at ping pong using a hockey puck as a paddle. It was pretty Notes funny.

Noelle Olson He also was invited to play in a Pro-Am golf tournament one year and played with Nick Price. I know that was a highlight of his life because he’ll tell that story to anyone who hasn’t heard it.

We were dragged to softball tournaments and Thursday night games. We didn’t always watch the games, but had fun at the park and hanging out the 5-8 Club.

We girls went on to play tennis throughout college and my dad never missed a match. It always felt good when my dad would watch me. He wasn’t one of those parents who is too vocal on the sidelines. He gave me words of encouragement. He did the same to my kids when they played sports.

For a few years, my dad worked as a softball umpire in the Twin Cities metro area to make money for us kids to have new school clothes. My mom wouldn’t let us go to his “umping” games. We kept begging to go and finally got our way. We only went once because people were yelling “colorful metaphors” to my dad. We didn’t like it. He kicked some of the players and spectators out. Looking back on it as an adult, my dad did the right thing.

I remember when I was in third grade and I couldn’t do a homework assignment because I didn’t have a ruler.

My dad went to the store late in the evening to get me a ruler. Believe me, this was a big deal because my dad never went to the store (unless it was to get a fishing license or fishing tackle).

Fishing with my dad Ever since I was a little girl, one of my favorite things to do is go fishing with my dad. He taught me how to fish as soon as I could walk. I’ve loved it ever since. We did most of our fishing at our cabin on Big Wood Lake in Grantsburg, Wisconsin. Our family vacations and weekends were spent there growing up and I wouldn’t trade that for the world.

We would have fishing contests and wonderful conversations. My dad would come back fro m every fishing outing and write down what happened in his fishing log. I still love it when we fish across the lake at Luther Point Bible Camp in the early morning. There is a huge cross on the point that is both peaceful and spiritual. And the fishing is not bad either once the campers are gone for the summer.

I didn’t know it at the time but those days on the lake taught me more than anything I could learn in school. He taught me history, math and how to treat people. I remember one time he specifically warned me about bullies. He said, “If you stand up to a bully, they will back down.” He was right. I’ve dealt with bullies throughout my life and do not tolerate them. I’ve realized that it doesn’t matter how old you are, they keep coming.

My dad has been there for me every step of the way.

His guiding hand on my shoulder will be with me for the rest of my life. Happy father’s day to all of you dads, grandfathers and uncles out there. May you feel appreciated, respected and forever loved.

o Way To Prevent This, Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens” is a headline that the satirical news site The Onion has been posting (and reposting) since 2014. Normally, I wouldn’t choose to reference a news site primarily known for humor and satire when dealing with such a serious subject. However, Angle of the repeated postings of what View is essentially the same headline Paul Dols and story with a few minor changes, seems to drive directly to the heart of the insanity of the seemingly endless cycle of mass shootings we are witnessing in this country.

Along with fellow staff members here at the Press, I’m part of a scheduled rotation of columns throughout the year. Leading up to my turn I usually try to think of possible column topics. I had chosen another topic and was hesitant to write about the latest mass shootings of innocent people, but ultimately decided that not addressing it would be avoiding a difficult and timely subject.

The choice of the editorial staff at The Onion to run the headline and story for the 21st time illustrates the predictable cycle of shock, mourning, media coverage, finger pointing, blame and calls

for change that follow what are now, unfortunately, becoming commonplace events.

I can reference back to Press articles, including one in 2016 that refers back to another article that was published in 2013 following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Thoughts at the time included, “As starkly divided as our society and the current political landscape appears to be, one thing that I would sincerely hope everyone can agree on is that something must be done to stop the rampant slaughter of innocent people — in places they and members of their family had every reasonable expectation to believe were safe” and “If the murder of 20 children between the ages of 6 and 7 (innocent in every sense of the word) doesn’t create some positive change, what will?” Before I finished writing this column the sound of the unmistakable and joyous chatter of a large group of young students from a nearby school provided me with a universal and visceral life connection. As they made their way down the street to an ice cream shop during the final days of the school year, I found it almost impossible to reconcile the possibility of this burst of seasonal joy suddenly and inexplicably becoming intertwined with senseless tragedy.

In a recent New York Times article titled, “The Arrow in America’s Heart,” Elizabeth Dias references a Buddhist parable that describes a man who has been wounded by a poison arrow. The

man insists on knowing various details about the arrow including who shot it, the kind of poison and what type of feathers are on the arrow. Missing the point that what is most important is removing the arrow and tending the wound, he dies. The Exploring Your Mind website further explains the meaning of the parable as a way of valuing life and prioritizing what is important before it’s too late.

After reading recently published statistics revealing the millions of dollars the National Rifle Association (NRA) lobby directs toward congress and the members who reap the most benefits, along with details about the gun manufacturer Daniel Defense’s marketing strategy directed toward teenagers, it becomes much clearer that these gunmen did not really act alone. There is complicity and there should be consequences.

It sometimes feels like the majority of us are being held hostage by an extreme minority of our society and members of congress. Because they can be complex and intertwined, statistics indicate that it can take several attempts to break free from a dysfunctional or abusive relationship. It may seem hopeless, but we have to keep trying to stop this heartbreaking cycle of violence.

First, we passed frontline worker pay legislation that will soon be open for applicants. More information can be found at https://frontlinepay.mn.gov We also replenished the UI trust Rep. Jamie Becker-Finn fund, which was incredibly important for many of our small businesses.

We also passed a “mental health omnibus” on the last day of session. This bill will benefit people across the state and includes necessary changes to our m I remain hopeful that the Senate will come back to the table so we can have a short special session to pass more bills. With our historic budget surplus and families struggling to pay rising gas and grocery prices, we need to reinvest those dollars in those who could use it right now.

Unfortunately, much of this work went unfinished as we ran out of time to find a final agreement on tax cuts, a supplemental budget, or a final bonding bill. It’s disappointing that my colleagues in the Senate Sen. Jason Isaacson Republican majority, especially the chair of the education committee, refused to come to the table and work to find a compromise. We still have a chance to get this work done, but only if there is an agreement for a special session. I believe tax cuts and new funding for schools and seniors are too important to leave undone.

This is also the year for us to pass a job-creating bonding bill. I have been working to get much-needed funding for the Lake Johanna Fire Department headquarters which would serve Shoreview, Little Canada, and North Oaks. This is an urgent need for our area, and dozens of projects like this in communities across the state are at stake if we do not finish a bonding bill. We must come back and get it done.

We did get some good things done. One of the most important pieces was finishing the work from last year for our frontline workers. We passed legislation to provide bonuses of $750 or more to frontline workers who did not have the option to work from home during the pandemic and replenished Minnesota’s Unemployment Insurance Program while keeping businesses’ unemployment insurance tax rates flat.

I was also proud of the bipartisan commitment we made to mental health this year. I helped lead efforts with colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the House and Senate to deliver $92.7 million for mental health resources. This included funding for a bill I worked on to create mental health urgency rooms for youth experiencing mental health distress, as well as ongoing funding for mobile crisis units, school-linked mental health, and for shelter-linked mental health. It also included critical competency restoration provisions to support public safety and criminal justice.

Electric lawn equipment improves the air we breathe

“Every weekend, about 54 million Americans mow their lawns, amounting to approximately 800 million gallons of gas per year,” said American Lung Association Director Lisa Thurstin, a member of the Minnesota Clean Cities Coalition. “At least 17 million gallons of gasoline are spilled annually just filling these lawn mowers.”

Thurstin gave a Zoom presentation about how electric lawn equipment improves air quality at the final Shoreview Environmental Quality Committee speaker series, held May 18.

“According to the most recent study conducted by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), gasoline-powered garden and lawn equipment emit significant amounts of pollutants,” Thurstin said. “Over the course of one year, approximately 26.7 million tons of pollutants were emitted by gasoline powered garden and lawn equipment. These are very large numbers, and they’re especially important considering that the source of emission is in such close proximity to the equipment operator.”

These pollutants are: • Carbon monoxide • Nitrogen oxides • Particulate matter • Carbon dioxide • Volatile organic compounds

“The particulate matter produced by gasoline-powered equipment has a range of sizes, and the really small particle matter is the most of concern,” said Thurstin, “specifically, the particles that are smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. This matter is called PM2.5, and can fit across the width of a human hair.”

She continued, “These are small enough to get deep into your lungs and cause problems with respiratory and cardiovascular systems.”

According to Thurstin, short-term exposure to fine particles can cause a variety of health problems. Over time, breathing fine particles in the air increases the chance of getting COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease and lung cancer.

“Using an electric lawnmower is a great way to reduce the pollution that you generate and expose yourself to,” said Thurstin.

Paul Gardner, of Shoreview, asked if there is a “cash for clunkers” program for lawn mowers.

“It has been discussed with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), and they did have some rebates for changing out the equipment a few years ago,” Thurstin said. “I don't think there's anything active at this point in time.”

Paige Ahlberg, from the Shoreview Environmental Quality Committee, asked whether Thurstin is working with landscaping companies regarding electric lawn equipment.

“We attend the Northern Green Expo, which is all landscape equipment, and present this information to them,” Thurstin said. “We've seen several cities starting to utilize them more.”

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Shoreview: • A Burnsville woman reported being involved in a hit-and-run accident May 8 in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road after her vehicle was hit in a restaurant parking lot by the driver of a silver 2006 Buick Lacrosse. The driver fled without taking part in the driver information exchange.

• A Minneapolis man reported criminal damage to his vehicle May 9 after he discovered an unsuccessful attempt to steal the catalytic converter from his Hyundai Santa Fe as it was parked in the 3900 block of Gramsie Court.

The converter was found hanging from the exhaust system.

• A Little Canada man, 39, was arrested and booked for second-degree assault at midnight May 10 in the 1600 block of Park Street, following a fight. During the fight, he drove his vehicle into another vehicle that his girlfriend's son and stepson were in the act of trying to enter. He faces two counts of second-degree assault in Ramsey County Court.

• A Maplewood woman, 20, was cited for failure to provide proof of insurance and for driving without a driver's license May 12 on Rice Street at I-694 following a property damage motor vehicle accident at the roundabout.

• A Shoreview youth reported a hit-and-run accident May 12 in the Shoreview Target parking lot in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. in which the rear passenger side of his vehicle was damaged and the rear tire was flattened. The culprit was the driver of a black and gray vehicle, as discovered by the paint transfer.

• A Minneapolis man on May 13 reported his credit card stolen during a theft from auto incident in St. Paul. The card was fraudulently used at the Shoreview Target in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. An attempt to use a second credit card was declined. The case is under investigation.

• A resident in the 3400 block of Victoria Street N. reported losing $1,000 May 13 to a phishing text scam claiming to be the victim's employer instructing her to purchase gift cards and send the account numbers back.

• Residents in the 5000 block of Lexington Avenue

N. reported rocks thrown at their vehicles parked in the driveway overnight May 13-14. The damage involves marred paintwork and cracks to the front windshield of one vehicle and rear windshield of the other vehicle.

• A set of keys were reported found May 14 in the beach area in the 300 block of North Owasso Blvd. As the alarm didn't trigger a reaction from any of the vehicles in the parking lot, the keys were turned into property at the station for safekeeping.

• A citizen reported finding a substance she suspected as being narcotics May 14 under her shed in the 1500 block of Hall Street and turned it over to Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies for destruction. The citizen said she didn't know when it may have been placed there.

• A Pierre, South Dakota, man reported the catalytic converter stolen from his Toyota Prius parked in a hotel lot in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road overnight May 14-15.

• A resident in the 900 block of Carmel Court reported a license plate stolen from her vehicle overnight May 14-15. The license plate number has been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.

• A Shoreview woman, 46, was arrested for domestic assault May 15 in the 1900 block of Bluestem Lane after she became intoxicated, shoved her boyfriend around and threw things at him as he tried to leave the residence to escape her. She may have tried to run after him, because Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies eventually located her at a local baseball field.

• A Phoenix, Arizona, man reported the catalytic converter stolen from his Mitsubishi Outland Sport while it was parked in a hotel lot in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road overnight May 17-18.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen from a Honda CR-V while it was parked in a driveway in the 4300 block of Chatsworth Street overnight May 18-19.

• A juvenile was arrested at 4:37 a.m. May 19 for stealing a wallet from a vehicle parked inside an attached garage that had been left open in the 500 block of Harbor Court. The actual arrest occurred at the site of an interrupted garage burglary in North Oaks, during which the subject

was caught in possession of the wallet harvested from the Shoreview burglary. He gave no resistance while being transported to the Juvenile Detention Center.

• A resident in the 3600 block of Rustic Place on May 19 reported a discarded business check stolen, washed, altered and presented at a bank to be cashed. The bank requested a police report to resolve the issue without cost to the victim.

• Trader Joe's in the 1000 block of Red Fox Road on May 19 reported receiving a counterfeit $100 bill for payment of a $11 tab and giving out $89 of real money in change. A $10 bill had been altered to resemble a $100 bill.

• The brother of a Coon Rapids man whose vehicle was stolen from Coon Rapids on April 4 after it was left running reported spotting the vehicle May 19 in a parking lot in the 1000 block of Grass Lake Place while he was making a delivery.

Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies verified and cleared the vehicle from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database before returning it to its owner.

• A St. Paul man, 30, was arrested at 2:16 a.m. May 20 in St. Paul for suspicion of catalytic converter theft and for fleeing deputies in a motor vehicle after deputies responded to a report of suspicious metal-sawing noises in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road. After crashing into a light pole, the suspect was apprehended with a large collection of catalytic converter removal implements in his vehicle. The suspect has been charged in Ramsey County Court.

• A Shoreview man, 63, faces possible charges for domestic abuse after deputies were called out at 10:25 p.m. May 20 to the 500 block of Mercury Circle on a verbal domestic.

• Four employees of the Shoreview Community Center in the 4600 block of Victoria Street N. reported their vehicles damaged May 21 while they were parked in the upper lot of the complex.

The employees, who live in Shoreview, Hugo, Elko and Dresser, Wisconsin, will pay a total of $9,000 to repair scratches after their vehicles were “keyed”.

the freeway. The vehicle lost control at the turn onto Arlington and drove onto the sidewalk and grass. Eventually, the vehicle spun out and hit a light pole on the side of L'Orient Street.

Although the vehicle was heavily damaged, the driver still tried to drive away. However, deputies were able to order the driver out of the vehicle for identification. Inside the vehicle were three passengers and a multitude of tools, including reciprocating saws and blades commonly used to remove and steal catalytic

converters.

The suspect already faces charges in Hennepin County for first-degree criminal damage to property, after he was caught in the act of stealing a catalytic converter in Plymouth and fleeing officers. He also has cases pending for drugs, receiving stolen property and theft.

Here's a modus operandi for you — getting caught in the act of stealing catalytic converters, then fleeing authorities.

A St. Paul man, 30, faces up to three years and one day in prison and/or a maximum fine of $5,000 for felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle. If convicted, he could see his sentence doubled if also convicted of a second crime — felony possession of burglary or theft tools.

At 2:16 a.m. May 20, Ramsey County

Sheriff's Office deputies were called out to the 1000 block of Gramsie Road on a report of a sawing noise coming from a parking lot and a white car in the lot with people around it.

On arrival, deputies spotted a white Honda driving away quickly from the address to head northbound on Lexington Avenue.

With lights and sirens, deputies in their marked squad pursued the vehicle onto I-694 at a high rate. Traveling at greater than 100 mph to I-35E, the vehicle exited at Larpenteur Avenue and fled onto a side road to the west of

Newbie helps Mustang girls nab SEC track crown

Mustangs set for state tennis in team, singles

Mounds View won seven events, including one by a senior in her first time in high school sports, on the way to the Suburban East Conference girls track championship May 24 and 26.

The Mustangs tallied 214.5 points, with Roseville (177.4) and Stillwater (136) second and third among 10 teams in Cottage Grove. It was the program’s 15th conference title but first since 2016.

Celeste Rhyn never went out for a sport until this spring. “I was just lazy, I guess,” Rhyn said with a grin.

There was also the COVID year that canceled a season, she said, and a personal issue last year. But she had done well in elementary and middle school events, and this year, a friend who’s not in track told her, “You’re fast, you should go out.”

So Rhyn suited up, and she’s been the top sprinter on a champion team.

At the SEC meet, Rhyn won the 200 dash with a time of 26.39 and placed fifth in the 100 with 12.87.

Asked if she wished she’d gone out before, she said, “Oh, for sure. One hundred percent. I’m so glad I came out this year. It’s been so much fun.”

Aaron Redman, co-head coach, called her a “great addition this spring. She jumped right in and embraced the team culture.”

The Mustangs scored big in sprints.

They were 1-2-3 in the 400 with Lauren Kath (59.19), Kate Roeber (1:00.82) and Magnolia Taylor (1:01.2) and Ava Bullert (1:02.65) placed sixth. The 4x400 team of Kath, Kate Roeber, Taylor Isabel and Ivy Nystrom won in 4:05.49.

The 4x800 team of Isabel, Magnolia Taylor, Elizabeth Gregory, and Emily Mehta won in 9:41.90. The 4x200 quartet of Camille Tran, Julia Dahl, Muriel Sorenson and Nystrom placed second (1:48.56).

Mounds View brothers Christo Alex and Emmanuel Alex placed first and second in the Section 4AA tennis singles tournament Tuesday, May 31, and will compete in singles at state after leading the Mustangs in the state team tournament.

In the team sectional, the Mustangs (14-4) beat Centennial 7-0 in the semifinals and Mahtomedi 5-2 in the finals, May 25, reversing last year’s upset loss to Mahtomedi. They swept the singles matches against Mahtomedi with Emmanuel Alex, Christo Alex, Luke Turkington and Bjorn Swenson at 1 through 4.

State Class 2A team competition will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by singles

and doubles Thursday and Friday, at the University of Minnesota.

Orono is seeded first, Edina second and Mounds View third in team competition.

First round pairings Tuesday are Orono vs Duluth East at 8 a.m., Rochester Mayor vs.

Eagan at 10 a.m., Edina vs. Eden Prairie at noon and Mounds View vs.

Becker at 2 p.m., with semifinals and finals Wednesday.

Mustang boys 4th in SEC, win 3 events Mounds View ran a national-best time in the 4x800 relay (see separate article) the way to placing fourth in the Suburban East Conference meet May 24 and 26, won by Stillwater.

The quartet of Max Gregory, Victor Lelinga, Elliott McArthur, and William Skelly won the 4x800 in 7:39.91 and the 4x400 in 3:32.37 at Park High School in Cottage Grove.

Their only other first place was Jason Walker pole vaulting 12 feet, 6 inches. Lincoln Maloney placed second with the same height.

Three Mustangs scored in the 400 with Dylan Wheeler fourth (51.54), Ethan Zhao sixth (53.06) and Eric Pfenning-Wendt seventh (53.18). Mustangs (15-8) advance in baseball sectionals Mounds View won its first two Section 5AAAA games by shutout before falling to top-seeded Maple Grove last Friday. The Mustangs (15-8) continued sectionals this week.

The Mustangs had a five-inning no-hitter in a 15-0 win over Park Center/Columbia Heights. Leo Fleischhacker struck out nine in four innings and Andrew Simon fanned three in one inning.

Blake Guerin (3-for-4) blasted two home runs for five RBI’s.

Connor Chervaney rapped two doubles for four RBI’s.

Mustangs girls win track section, gain state in 7 events The Mounds View girls added the Section 5AAA championship to their conference title, and earned state berths in seven events, June 1 and 3 at Forest Lake. Top three teams were Mounds View 157, Roseville 130, and Spring Lake Park 122.

Mustang junior Taylor Isabel won the 3200 (10:52.42) with sophomore Emily Mehta second (11:05.14). Isabel also won the 1600 in 5:04.35.

Also placing first were sophomore Lauren Kath in the 800 (2:20.85) and the 4x400 team of Kath, freshman Kate Roeber, sophomore Magnolia Taylor and eighth-grader Ivy Nystrom (4:05.66).

Hadley Streit, senior, defending state champ in shot put, notched a personal best 41-111/2 but placed second as Champlin Park’s Adyson Kapitzke threw 43-0. Also advancing by placing second were Nystrom in the 400 (1:00.97) and senior Jaylyn Ahlberg in pole vault (10-7).

The state Class 3A meet will be held Thursday and Saturday at St. Michael-Albertville.

“To get a state record and be invited to a national meet is huge,” McArthur said. “Icing on the cake.”

The Mustang quartet won by 36 seconds over second-place Forest Lake. “What’s amazing is that they got this time running alone,” said Fleming.

“After the first 600 meters, nobody was close. That they were able to do this without anyone pushing them is so impressive.”

The foursome won’t run the 4x800 together again until Nike nationals June 18 in Eugene, OR, but the same group won the 4x400 at the conference also and will pursue section/state honors.

Shoreview Press contacted all four to reflect on the historic run.

“We wanted to attempt to break the state record because we knew we had a shot at it,” said leadoff man Gregory. “So, the conference was where we planned to attempt it. This race was our one and only chance so we were all pretty nervous.”

Gregory had a Forest Lake runner on his elbow for 600 meters, then pulled away, handing off after a 1:58.9 split. “I knew I had to go out hard and not

give up the lead. I just ran as hard as I could and tried to drown out the pain.”

Lelinga was “excited and nervous” as he watched Gregory approach with the baton. ”We had a goal and we had to execute it,” said Lelinga, who turned in a 1:55 split. “We knew we are a special group,

Lelinga handed off with a huge lead. “When I got the baton, we were probably 80 to 100 meters ahead,” said McArthur, who added to it with a

1:53.3 split. About running alone, he said, “Watching Max and Victor run so well before me was a big help. Along with knowing that it wasn't just for me, but all the other guys who were working to make it happen.”

Skelly lapped two teams as he closed it out with a 1:52 split. “I’m not sure how far ahead I was when I got the baton. I was too dialed in to think about any of the other teams,” he said. “We all have worked so hard all season. I was very confident it would go well.”

At Section 5AA, along with the 4x400, Skelly ran the 800 (he was state champion last year) and 1600; McArthur the 3200 (state runner-up last year) and 1600, and Lelinga and Gregory the 800. “We’ve already done what we set out to do with our 4x800,” Skelly said, “and we all have individual goals that we haven’t accomplished yet.”

“We partnered with Ramsey County Parks and Recreation, and they are going to have bikes available for folks to check out for a few hours,” Stevenski said. “We also encourage people to bring their own bikes if they need to fix something up.”

Stevenski noted that the library will have safety classes and videos on how to use the bike service stations later this summer.

The bike service stations have nine common tools bicyclists typically use for repairs. There is also an air pump connected to the bike service stations so bicyclists can put air in the tires.

“From recent surveys, 70% of our residents say they value our trail systems here,” Yang said.

“They use (them) at least once a month and are

proud of the trails here. We want to continue that trend.”

Yang said the bike service stations will benefit everyone who uses the bike and trail system.

“We want to encourage people to use the trails, and having these out there gives them convenience along with safety out on the trails,” Yang said. “It will make it easier for them to be out there.”
