Art Lab RX provides art therapy on the go

“Put it on a bus.”

That’s how it all started.

Lisa Lounsbury is a licensed marriage and family therapist, board certified art therapist and board-approved clinical supervisor.

She is also the founder of Art Lab RX, a mobile mental health counseling agency that specializes in art therapy services and

wellness programs.

Lounsbury was working in corporate America in sales, but didn’t find it to be fulfilling. When she lost her job in 2008, she didn’t know that she would quickly discover what she was meant to do. She created this workshop centered around exploring your identity. She brought her workshop to a treatment center.

“The impact from those women in this

two-hour workshop, their response, impacted me so deeply. That I was just like okay, this is it,” she recalled. Lounsbury went to Minneapolis Community and Technical College for a couple of years before she transferred to Metro State University.

It was there that she pursued a degree in fine art, psychology, world religions and theater and storytelling. As a part of her independent study, she continued to

offer art therapy groups and workshops at treatment facilities.

After finishing grad school, she started working at a day treatment center for adolescents doing art therapy. She did that for a while, but she always had the dream of opening up her own center.

The proposed recycling budget for 2024 is $1,318,051, 70% higher than last year’s budget of $776,410. Expenses associated with recycling include contractual fees for weekly curbside recycling, spring cleanup day and staff day.

The increase in cost is attributed to changes in prices from the contract extension for the first six months of the year and prices associated with a new contract beginning in the second half of 2024.

A joint agreement between the city of Shoreview and the Ramsey County Department of Public Health provides the city access to the county’s waste management service charge, which allows the city to charge for recycling services. It is the primary source of funding for the city’s curbside recycling program. This arrangement allows the city to determine the residential count of housing units and provide that information to the Ramsey County Department of Property Taxation. The agreement allows the

city to determine its curbside recycling budget, calculate the per parcel charge and report the charge to the Department of Property Taxation, which places the charge on property owners’ tax statements. Funds are collected and distributed to the city on tax settlement dates.

Recycling fees for 2024 will be $101 a year, an increase from last year’s $70 fee. Prices associated with recycling services have gone up in the past several years. According to both Foth Infrastructure and Environment and Ramsey County, who developed the request for proposal, bid prices are typical of current prices seen in the Metro area. The recycling fee will be collected on the 2024 residential property tax statement as per the joint power agreement between the city and Ramsey County.

The recycling program extends beyond the curbside recycling program and cleanup day events. In partnership with the county, the recycling program includes yard waste collection sites, household hazardous waste collection, direct customer service call lines, organics recycling drops off, Fix-it Clinics, outreach materials and business recycling.

Nashville here I come

T

he first time I went to Nashville I was 18 during Spring Break. My family and I stayed in a loft apartment just two blocks away from Broadway in Printer’s Alley. Across from our loft was a jazz club called Skull’s Rainbow Room, which I would discover had the best chocolate mousse cake I have ever tasted in my life. Since I wasn’t old enough to get into the restaurants past 8 p.m., my dad and I would sit on the front patio of our loft. Since we were close enough to the jazz club, we could hear the music from Skull’s in the alley.

On our first night there, my dad went across the street and was able to convince the hostess to let us buy a chocolate mousse cake. A waiter even came out of the club with the plate and served it to us. We got another one the next night, it’s funny because they remembered my dad from the night before and Madeline knew he was there to order another Dolby slice of cake.

The two of us would sit on the patio, eat cake, and listen to jazz music till around midnight. My mom and sister would sit with us for a while before going back upstairs when it got too late.

Ever since my first visit to Nashville, I decided that for my 21st birthday, I would go back to the city with my family, my sister’s closest friend and my best friend Alica, to celebrate. I would be able to experience Nashville in its full glory. We planned the trip about a year in advance. It was a big deal. My family takes birthdays seriously, we love to celebrate one another. We worked out all the small details, and soon, we were on a plane down south.

My 21st was nothing but a success. We got a house about a 15-minute walk away from Broadway. There was a rooftop that gave us a perfect view of the skyline. There was a fireplace, comfortable seating and plenty of photo opportunities that me, Alica, my sister and her friend Haley, took advantage of. The sunsets were unreal from the roof.

I love Broadway and Nashville. Live music of all genres escapes through open windows and doors for the mile-long stretch. When I first went, I couldn’t get in anywhere because I wasn’t old enough. I was so disappointed because I am a huge music junkie. I listen to anything and everything. The whole point of Nashville is to listen to the music. I wasn’t able to do that when I was 18, but I took full advantage when I was old enough.

During my birthday trip, I had two singers serenade me. You can imagine how red my cheeks were as they sang country love songs to me in their cowboy hats. It was so embarrassing because everyone was cheering around me and taking videos. But it just added to the experience. The videos are hilarious to look back on today.

At the end of November, my dad and I are going back to Nashville to watch a Predators versus Minnesota Wild game. I have written in my previous columns that my dad and I love hockey, specifically the Gophers, but we are slowly branching out. It will be two of my favorite things combined into one trip — hockey and Nashville. We are just going for a weekend, but I am so excited to go back.

Nashville holds a very special place in my heart. I have so many good memories there. I want to move there in the future, whether it is for two years or the rest of my life. Something about the city feels like home to me. I love everything about it. The lights, the music and everything in between.

Sustainable Shoreview

t’s November and we are currently enjoying unseasonably warm weather which is great for those of us still dealing with outdoor clean-up activities with all these leaves. As we approach the end of 2023, I wanted to share some of the sustainable practices and environmental initiatives in Shoreview. As are many other cities, Shoreview is working toward a climate Sue Denkinger action plan, beginning with our recently initiated participation in the Partners in Energy program with Xcel Energy. City staff and an advisory group will be working together to create an energy action plan that will identify ways in which to reduce energy costs, save energy and help the environment. This program is our first step toward forming a climate action plan.

Yet there are many environmental best practices and initiatives that are already part of Shoreview’s sustainability measures.

Movers & Shakers

• GreenStep Cities - Shoreview is a Step 5 city. This program is a continuous improvement initiative for cities to become more sustainable and improve residents’ quality of life. Many Minnesota cities participate in this program and the highest is step 5, however, to continue at that level cities must make continual improvements.

• Water conservation and quality - Rice Creek Fields Park re-uses their stormwater for irrigation and the city’s maintenance center treats over 90% of their stormwater on-site. The WaterSmart program is a state award-winning program that uses software to allow residents to track their water usage and compare it with other residents’ which may identify potential issues and provide tips on how to reduce water consumption.

The city also maintains 20 separate rain gardens across 12 city properties to reduce stormwater runoff.

• Smart salting - During the winter months, Shoreview uses “smart salting” practices and technology. This allows us to best manage the amount of salt used to keep streets drivable while controlling how much we use. Each plow has software to track the amount of salt used, speed, and weather conditions

during use and the plow operators have training in salt conservation. Data gathered from the plows’ software is used for analysis toward longterm planning and to track salt use.

• Energy use - The city is phasing in LED lights at city parks and streetlights which results in approximately 75% less energy use. The city’s maintenance center is fitted with a solar array which provides half of the energy needs of that facility.

Electric vehicle level 2 charging stations are available in the upper level of the community center.

These are only some of the practices and initiatives that Shoreview has in place as part of city operations.

The environmental quality committee also hosts a speaker series on a variety of topics, and these are open to the public.

SCHOOL BOARD SNIPPETS • The district recognized its Mounds View National Merit Scholarship semifinalists and finalists. There were 11 semifinalists and 20 commended scholars from the district. The semifinalists join about 16,000 students nationally competing for scholarships in the highly competitive program.

• The board approved three different employment contracts. These employment contracts are for

custodians, teachers and nutrition services. All three contracts will run from 2023-2025. These three contracts are in tandem with SEIU Local 26, the Mounds View Education Association and the Mounds View Nutrition Services.

• The abstract of votes from the most recent Mounds View School Board election was accepted by the board. Certificates of election were extended to the four candidates who

received the most votes. Those four candidates were Heidi Danielson, Jim DeMay, Jonathan Weinhagen and Alissa Daire Nelson.

• Mounds View School measures the percentage of students who graduate in exactly four years plus the percentage of those who continue according to their personalized plan. Mounds View Schools’ goal was to increase this from 97.8% in 2021 to 98.0% in 2022. For all Class of

2022 subgroups, no subgroup will be less than 90%. Currently, the Class of 2023 is at 97.6%.

The next Mounds View School Board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at the District Center, 4570 Victoria St. N., Shoreview. Public comments to the board will be at 6:30 p.m. before the meeting.

Winter recreation programs open for registration

Environmental Center: The new Environmental Service Center will be located at 1700 Kent St., Roseville. It will open in late 2025 or early 2026.

Ramsey County held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Environmental Service Center on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The new service center will be built at 1700 Kent St., Roseville.

The site will feature: • A covered drive-through drop-off for household hazardous waste and electronic waste so residents can conveniently drop off waste yearround in all types of weather.

• A free product reuse room.

• A space for Fix-it Clinics and other environmental education and activities.

• Food scraps and general recycling drop-off.

The center is part of the county’s Enhancing Environmental Health Services initiative to redesign and add recycling and waste disposal services to better meet the community’s needs. This project is one of the first projects to come from the initiative.

Work will begin on the site in fall 2023. The new building is set to open in late 2025 or early 2026.

Amy Peterson and farmers: 21 Roots Farm will hold a Winter Market from Dec. 2-3. The farm is located at 10361 110th St. in Grant.

The 21 Roots Farm located in Grant will host its Winter Market once again. The market will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 2-3.

The Winter Market will feature farm products made by its farm participants, known as Farmers.

Products include soap, balm, lotions, dryer balls made from alpaca fiber, and honey. Other farminspired products such as artwork, ornaments, pins, cards and hats will be on sale as well.

There also will be a wide array of donated items specifically made for the Farm by the local community.

Shoreview Einhausen Sister City Association celebrates 20 years

State flag, seal designs available for public viewing

What do Minnesotans think the next state flag and seal should look like? Members of the public are now invited to see for themselves. More than 2,600 designs were submitted to the State Emblems Redesign Commission during a one-month period; qualifying submissions are now available online.

Minnesota state flag designs make up about 85% of the submissions. Those are available to view at https://serc.mnhs.org/flags. Minnesota state seal designs make up approximately 15% of submissions. Those are available to view at https:// serc.mnhs.org/seals.

Later this month, the commission will select five submissions for the new state seal and five for the state flag. The commission will select one design (or a modified version) to be utilized as the basis for each emblem.

The State Emblems Redesign Commission was established in the 2023 legislative session to develop and adopt a new design for the official state seal and a new design for the official state flag no later than Jan. 1.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following selected incidents in Shoreview: • A resident in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. reported that someone had hacked his TikTok account Oct. 7 and was sending harassing messages to other people. The case is under investigation, and no arrests had been made at the time of this report.

• Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies on patrol at 1:08 p.m. Oct. 8 were flagged down by a woman in the 700 block of Heather Drive to report that an abandoned bicycle had been left in her yard and had not moved for the past three days. Deputies recovered the bicycle, which didn’t contain any serial numbers or ownership information, and took it to the station to be placed into property.

• A fight-in-progress involving anywhere from nine to 10 people was reported at 6:02 a.m. Oct. 8 in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road. When deputies arrived on scene they found the victim, 20, who said she was from Minneapolis and that she’d been jumped by three other females. Although the victim suffered minor physical injuries, she did not wish to pursue charges. However, the incident was documented.

• Homeowners in the 5600 block of Cottonwood Court reported that someone had thrown eggs at their house on Oct. 8. No permanent damage occurred.

• An abandoned gym bag was reported found Oct. 10 in the Snail Lake Regional Park/Grass Lake Nature Preserve in the 400 block of Gramsie Road. Because the bag contained medication as well as electronics and clothing, deputies collected the items and started the process of tracking down the bag’s owner.

• An unwanted male, 20, was issued a trespass notice at 3:28 p.m. Oct. 11 for refusing to leave the laundry room of an apartment complex in the 500 block of Harriet Avenue. He did not had permission to be in the laundry room, and was escorted off the property.

• At 6:46 p.m. Oct. 11, the same unwanted male, 20, who had been trespassed from the apartment complex in the 600 block of Harriet Avenue three hours earlier, was found loitering around on the property again. Responding deputies issued an additional trespass notices, this time for the entire apartment complex.

• A man out for a walk Oct. 11 reported finding a smashed-in window on a vacant building in the 3600 block of Victoria Street N. Deputies responding to the scene located a fire extinguisher lying on the ground outside the window and surrounded by shards of glass. After deputies wrote their report, the building owner was contacted.

• A male, 27, was arrested for firearms violations at 5:30 a.m. Oct. 15 on Victoria Street N. at the intersection of County Road E, after northbound deputies on patrol encountered an occupied GMC Yukon facing south stopped in the middle of the road on Victoria Street. When deputies made contact with the person in the driver’s seat, they discovered he was unconscious, with a loaded gun lying on the front passenger seat floorboard.

The suspect was taken in for possessing a firearm without a serial number, while deputies confiscated the ghost gun.

• A Wisconsin man reported a generator stolen from a job site in the 4200 block of Hodgson Road on Oct. 16.

• A resident in the 1500 block of Lois Drive on Oct. 16 reported her ex-husband, 45, for contacting her in violation of an active order for protection.

• Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) deputies recovered two abandoned Razor A-Kick scooters Oct. 16 at the intersection of Bucher Avenue and Alameda Street. Neither of the scooters had been reported stolen.

A catalytic converter was reported stolen Oct. 17 from a vehicle parked in the 4600 block of Victoria Street N. • A Shoreview man reported a sub-woofer stolen Oct. 17 from his 1998 Toyota Camry parked in an underground ramp in the 5800 block of Rice Creek Parkway. Thieves had broken into the vehicle for access. The case is under investigation.

• Deputies were called out to the 3900 block of Gramsie Court Oct. 17 on a domestic assault call to assist with a juvenile male, 14, who was out of control. The male was no longer on scene when deputies arrived.

• Four different people called 911 to report a raccoon displaying zombie-like behavior Oct. 18 at the intersection of Maple Street and Mercury Drive. The racoon was standing on one spot, just staring at a fire hydrant. Deputies saw to it that the fixated racoon was removed from the area.

• A man from New Richmond, Wisconsin, reported his unlocked work truck rummaged through Oct. 18 while it was parked in the 600 block of Sunset Court. Thieves had stolen his cell phone, wallet, Harley Davidson lunch box and several keys.

• A resident in the 500 block of County Road J on Oct. 18 reported being scammed out of thousands of dollars by people sending threatening text messages.

• A Shoreview husband, 74, was cited Oct. 16 for calling his wife in the 1000 block of Bridge Street over the weekend of Oct. 13-15, in violation of an order for protection she had against him.

• A bag and harmonica were reported stolen Oct. 20 from a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe parked near a dog park in the 5900 block of Lexington Avenue N., after thieves broke into the vehicle.

• A Shoreview man reported a wallet stolen from his vehicle Oct. 20 while it was parked in the 500 block of Tomlyn Avenue. Thieves had damaged two windows trying in vain to gain access to the vehicle before finally finding a third window to break through.

• A resident in the 3100 block of Lexington Avenue N. on Oct. 20 reported that someone had entered her apartment and stole a CD player, CDs and cassette tapes. As deputies were gathering information for their incident report, the complainant called back to say that her daughter had taken the items without her consent.

FACES OF FENTANYL: ‘We belong to a club that we never wanted to belong to’ FROM PAGE 1

Laura Cowles, Heather Johnson and Zach Zacho all belong to a club they never wanted to join. They all outlived their children, who were victims of a fentanyl overdose.

“It's an empty feeling, because it isn't like they were sick or had cancer or an illness that you could kind of mentally prepare yourself for. It a sudden death,” Cowles said. “I never expected to outlive my children.”

Cowles, a Circle Pines resident, lost her 30-year-old son, Castle Ahlbeck, to a fentanyl overdose Aug. 16, 2022, while he was in the Stillwater prison.

He was serving his fifth year of a seven-year sentence. He leaves behind three children, ages 12, 9 and 6.

“I got a phone call from the prison saying that he had passed away. I was in shock,” she recalled. “At first, they couldn't tell me what had happened, and then about two weeks later, they finally told me that he had passed from a fentanyl overdose… How does fentanyl get in a prison?”

Eventually she was told that one of her son’s visitors likely smuggled it into the prison by hiding it in a face mask.

“My son being incarcerated gave me a false sense of security; he should have been safe, and especially from something like that,” Cowles said.

From what she knows, her son didn’t struggle with addiction and was very opposed to fentanyl. “That’s the one thing he and his friends promised they wouldn’t do,” she said.

She explained that a year prior, one of her son’s friends was in treatment for 90 days. He was released and the next day he was dead from a fentanyl overdose.

“I don’t think people realize how dangerous this drug is,” Cowles said.

“It’s so scary because it could be anybody … Now I know more about fentanyl than I ever wanted to in my life.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine, according to the Centers Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is a major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the U.S. There are two types of fentanyl: pharmaceutical fentanyl and illegally made fentanyl. Both are considered synthetic opioids. Pharmaceutical fentanyl is prescribed by doctors to treat severe pain, especially after surgery and for advanced-stage cancer.

However, most recent cases of fentanyl-related overdose are linked to illegally made fentanyl, which is distributed through illegal drug markets for its heroin-like effect. It is often added to other drugs because of its extreme potency, which makes drugs cheaper, more powerful, addictive and more dangerous.

Shoreview resident Heather Johnson, formerly of Lino Lakes, received a phone call April 4, 2023. “I knew he was dead,” she recalled.

Johnson’s son, Carson James (CJ) Montgomery, was 27 years old when he passed away from a fentanyl overdose. Johnson says it wasn’t his first time experiencing an overdose.

In December 2022, she found her son had overdosed while in the bathtub.

“I jumped in the bathtub, checked for a pulse, started CPR and called 911,” Johnson recalled. After seven shots of Narcan, he woke up.

On April 4, after receiving several phone calls, she went to check on her son and found him face down on his

bed. “I went up to feel a pulse and he was ice cold … I listened to him not having a heartbeat.”

She then had to help put her son in a body bag and load him into a hearse.

She later found out he had purchased meth that he didn’t know was laced with fentanyl.

Johnson said her son was introduced to drugs when he was just 13 years old in the bathroom of his school. As a minor, he went to seven treatment centers but was kicked out. He had several mental health diagnoses. After he passed away, Johnson learned her son had overdosed seven times in three years.

“I knew what addiction was, but I didn’t know his addiction was this much. I didn’t know he was going to die,” she said. “He promised everybody he wouldn’t use fentanyl or any other drug without being there, and he did. And he died, and I found him, and I held him, and I cremated him, and now his urn sits in my house.”

Montgomery is now one of the growing number of faces on the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) special exhibit, The Faces of Fentanyl, which commemorates the lives lost from fentanyl poisoning.

Johnson was contacted by the DEA to share her son’s story at the National Family Summit on Fetanyl. During October, DEA field divisions across the country hosted regional family summits in order to bring together federal partners,

community prevention groups, and families who have lost loved ones to drug poisonings or overdoses. These summits provided opportunities to share information, build connections and foster collaboration between family groups, the DEA and other key sectors of their local community.

Johnson said that after the summit, she hopes she will have some more ideas on how she can continue to connect with other parents and continue to make a difference.

“I don’t need to be a hero … but if one person says ‘help me,’ and I can help them, it’s a start,” Johnson said.

Zacho lost his 28-year-old son, Maxx, in April 2019. Maxx had been sober for four years, so it was a shock to his family.

“We had plans to go fishing that day,” Zacho said. “It is a mystery to all of us what triggered this. He had been clean for four years. He was doing really well. He had fixed a lot of his legal problems. He was working.”

Zacho explained that something must have triggered him and he resorted to using heroin that — unbeknownst to him — was laced with fentanyl. About seven years prior, Maxx was burned on his hands pretty badly at work. He had been given oxycodone to help with the pain.

“He never stopped after that,” Zacho said. “It triggered something … It was the only thing that made him feel normal.” Once oxycodone started becoming harder to find and more expensive, Maxx resorted to heroin. “Maxx

struggled a long time. There were a lot of ups and downs,” Zacho said.

For several years now, the family has had a booth at the State Fair to help spread awareness in honor of International Overdose Awareness Day (Aug. 31) and offer families resources and a place to turn.

“It’s a horrible tragedy that happened that comes with a lot of guilt, comes with a lot of ‘could’ve, would’ve should’ves,’” Zacho said.

Signs of overdose

Recognizing the signs of opioid overdose can save a life. Here are some things to look for: • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils” • Falling asleep or losing consciousness • Slow, weak or no breathing • Choking or gurgling sounds • Limp body

BY THE NUMBERS • Nearly 71,000 drug overdose deaths involved synthetic opioids other than methadone in 2021.

• In 2022, the DEA seized more than 59.6 million fentanyl-laced fake pills and more than 13,000 pounds of fentanyl powder. (The 2022 seizures are equivalent to more than 395.7 million lethal doses of fentanyl.)

• 2 mg, the amount on the tip of a pencil, can be enough to kill an average American.

• Laboratory testing indicates 7 out of every 10 pills seized by DEA contain a lethal dose of fentanyl.

• Over 150 people die every day from overdoses related to synthetic opioids like fentanyl.

• Fentanyl is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.

• Rates of overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids other than methadone, which includes fentanyl and fentanyl analogs, increased over 22% from 2020 to 2021.

ART LAB RX: Art therapy provides another avenue to healing process FROM PAGE 1

I said, ‘What if I’m wrong?’ What’s best for my clients? I heard, ‘put it on a bus.’ If I put it on a bus then I can go to them.”

She called up her then-fiancé, who just so happened to be a bus driver, to let her know of her idea, and he said, “let’s do it.”

In 2017, Art Lab RX was born.

Maggie, a symbol of transformation herself, is a standard-issue coach bus that has been transformed from the inside out — much like someone who is experiencing the healing power of art therapy. Her rainbow exterior is a reference to the redemption one can feel through this creative selfexpression.

Maggie travels around to treatment centers, mental health centers, schools, churches, youth groups and more all around the Twin Cities.

Michaelene Colestock, founder and CEO of ANEW Chemical Health Services, has known Lounsbury for several years. The two met when Lounsbury began offering workshops and classes at a treatment center Colestock was running. They were both working for other people at the time, but had dreams of starting their own businesses. Ultimately the two attended the Women Venture program to develop business plans for Art Lab RX, and Colestock’s substance use disorder treatment center, which opened in St. Paul in 2018.

“She was the first person I called when I needed some extra group work,” Colestock explained.

Art Lab RX visits the outpatient program quarterly for a six-week program. Colestock said when clients first find out about the art therapy, they are hesitant to participate.

“They don’t understand that this is just a different means to tap into some of the trauma that they’ve experienced in their lives, which is one of the same things that brought them to use substances as a maladaptive coping mechanism,” she explained.

For the clients her treatment center works with, Colestock says talk therapy is not as effective.

“Talk therapy was really designed more for your uppermiddle class people that kind of are fairly insightful and can you use a therapist to process through their life experiences but this population tends to get a little bit stuck emotionally.

Their growth gets emotionally stunted usually at the age they started using substances, which for a lot of our clients is sometimes 11, 12, 13 years old,” she said. “They don’t really know how to talk about it with talk therapy and the art therapy can kind of loosens some things up internally that they didn’t even really know were there until they started creating the art.”

She added, “It’s another avenue to get a healing process that they might not otherwise have access to.”

Oftentimes the she said the clients enjoy art therapy so much, they often decide to see Lounsbury for individual therapy.

In addition to Maggie, Art Lab RX also provides individual couples and family art therapy at its office in Maple Grove, as well as art therapy groups and wellness workshops at its new Blaine location.

In addition to art therapy groups, Art Lab RX will soon begin offering open studio nights, also known as “Creative Breaks,” on Friday nights.

Creative Breaks will include Creative Break for Christ, Creative Break for Recovery, Creative Break for Helpers as well as Creative Break for Anybody. People can sign up via Eventbrite; all necessary materials will be provided.

“Things happen that you don’t expect to happen when you do art therapy. The art speaks when words fail us,” Lounsbury said.

WBCA Members’ Exhibition Now on View White Bear Center for the Arts’ Members’ Exhibition opened on November 13 with a record breaking 245 pieces of artwork on display. Each piece was created by a different artist, and all artists are members of White Bear Center for the Arts, making it an incredible display of local creativity. The show spills out of the Ford Family Gallery into the Exhibition Hall and atrium, filling the art center with motion and color.

Find textiles, ceramic art, paintings, drawings, photographs, and more lining the walls, telling the stories of an entire arts community. “This show is a celebration of our members, with each piece offering a window into their diverse talents, creativity, and dedication,” said Sara Nephew, WBCA’s Creative Services Director. “Cheers to the artists, the heart and soul of our treasured

community.” The show is on display now through January 17, 2024, and is free for all. The Community Reception & Holiday Reception for the show will be held on Thursday, December 7 from 3:30-8:30 PM.

Woodfire Exploration

On a farm in Hudson Wisconsin, at the home of local potter Zac Spates, sits a kiln.

It’s a large, handbuilt, hut-like structure around five feet tall.

And a few times a year, it fires hundreds and hundreds of pieces of pottery by the heat of burning wood. Zac Spates built this anagama woodfire kiln seven years ago with the help of friends, from a mixture of hard firebrick and high temperature cast cement. About once a year, Zac Spates offers his Woodfire Exploration class through White Bear Center for the Arts, in order to teach the firing process. This fall, WBCA students had the chance to visit Zac’s studio, and try their hand at firing the kiln.

The process started in September when students got to work throwing mugs and plates and vases on the wheel in preparation for the event.

After glazing their pieces, the students headed to Zac’s farm to begin the 48-hour endeavor of firing the kiln. “Firing is my favorite part of the process,” Zac said in a conversation with White Bear Center for the Arts.

“It’s always such an excitement

to go from unfired pots to opening the kiln to brand new finished pots that are always different.” Over the course of 48 hours, students stoked the kiln with pine, oak, and a smattering of other hardwoods, and the kiln reached 2,200 degrees fahrenheit. Each firing produces different colors and patterns from the wood ash, flame, heat and oxygen, so each piece is unique.

Student Kerrie Walters learned about White Bear Center for the Arts for the first time through this class, after searching for woodfire experiences in the area. “It was special to see the pots every time you opened up the kiln to stoke the fire,” Kerrie said.

“It makes you closer to all steps in the process of creating ceramics.”

In the end, students came away with one-of-a-kind pieces of woodfired pottery, as well as the unique experience of stoking the kiln with wood hour after hour, and watching as their pieces transform in the heat of the kiln. “The labor involved in firing is completely different from turning on an electric or gas kiln,” Zac said.

Zac values sharing this firing experience with the broader clay community. “I’ve always wanted to share the process because I believe it’s important for someone doing pottery to understand other processes,” he said. “There’s no better way than to experience it yourself.”

Folklorist Chad Lewis cuts lumberjack legends down to size

Wendigo Lore, The Big Muddy Monster, Paranormal Minnesota: These and more were for sale at a recent program titled “Lumberjack Legends of Minnesota.”

Taking place in the community room of the Centennial Library and hosted by Chad Lewis, Lumberjack Legends at first gave the impression of being self-serious.

Lewis’ photos, after all, court comparison to the “brave” explorers of shows like “Ghost Hunters” or “Paranormal Investigators.” Lewis, however, is quite self-aware in his presentation.

“My talks are geared more toward the general public,” Lewis explains.

“I could do deep dives … but I’m more like Cliff Notes for the average person.”

Cliff Notes was a smart angle for Lewis to take with the program, as northern lumberjacks had over 100 creatures in their mythology. Equally as interesting, though, is the environment from which these cryptids were created: lumberjack bunkhouses.

From the 1850s to the 1900s, lumberjacks

clear-cut 33 million of Minnesota’s 52 million square acres of forest.

Most of this grueling work was done in bittercold winters by European immigrants, Native Americans, Black people, or poor white farmers looking for seasonal income.

Bunkhouses, from which the slang term for nonsense—“bunk”— came, were often the only form of entertainment for these overworked men.

As such, these mythical creatures were given life as a way to pass the time as well as provide new recruits with safety tips. Of course, the most famous creature birthed from these stories was a man: Paul Bunyan.

“Early versions of Paul Bunyan are likely lost,” Lewis explains, “because they weren’t fit to print in newspapers. The version you’re likely familiar with is from the 1920s or later.” Indeed, Lewis’ sampling of Bunyan roadside attractions fit his literally largerthan-life reputation.

Akeley, Minnesota, claims its perfectly round boulders are Bunyan’s childhood marbles; Bemidji, Minnesota, claims its distinctly shaped lake is evidence of Bunyan’s footprint; and

Paul Bunyun is a famous folklore.

Hackensack, Minnesota, claims its 17-foot-tall statue is a perfect likeness of Bunyan’s sweetheart, Lucette.

At the end of Lewis’ presentation, he encouraged listeners neither to believe nor dismiss. Rather, he stressed the importance of stories and folklore within a culture.

“My parting advice is always, ‘Why take my word for it?’” Lewis concludes. “See it for yourself and have an adventure!”

Brief sampling of lumberjack creatures: Hodag: The vengeful spirit of an ox left behind during the previous winter. Its favorite food is allwhite bulldogs.

Snow snake: An all-white snake that migrated from Siberia. Its bite will freeze you to death unless you consume copious amounts of alcohol first.

Axehandle hound: Dogs that follow new recruits and will eat the handles off axes left outside overnight.

Hugag: Moose with lips that droop to their feet.

They lean on trees to sleep, which is why trees in the forest crack and fall over on their own.

Splintercat: A panther with terrible eyesight.

It keeps running into trees, which is why you’ll hear trees crack in the wintertime.

Black Friday: Tips to kick off holiday shopping season Retail holidays now dot the consumer landscape throughout much of the year.

That shift has made a day like Black Friday somewhat less unique than it was in years past. However, Black Friday remains the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping season, and it’s still a major day for retailers big and small.

According to Adobe Analytics, in 2022 consumers spent $9.12 billion while online shopping on Black Friday.

A separate report from the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics indicated just under 200 million consumers shopped online and in store between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday, which is the Monday following Black Friday. Such figures indicate that holiday shopping on the weekend of Thanksgiving might have changed, but it’s still wildly popular.

This Black Friday, shoppers can consider these tips to ensure they find the right gifts at the right price.

• Do some research before the big day. The spirit of competition is alive and well on Black Friday.

Consumers once flocked en masse to store parking lots in the wee hours of the morning in order to get sale items before shelves emptied.

Some still do, so shoppers may need to be willing to compete to find

the best deals. But some pre-Black Friday research might prove the best way to land the best deals, and it may not require waking up in the middle of the night. Much like shoppers compete with one another to grab sale items, retailers also compete to get shoppers in store or on their websites. As a result, it’s not uncommon for retailers big and small to advertise Black Friday sales weeks in advance. Shoppers can research these sales and plan when to visit certain stores in order to land the best deal.

• Wake up early. Shoppers may not need to get out of bed at 3 a.m. to land the best Black Friday deals, but the early bird still gets the worm on the day after Thanksgiving. Plan to shop early in the morning, which increases the chances of finding the right gift at the right price. If an item you’ve earmarked is part of a doorbuster deal, plan to get to the store or onto the website as early as possible.

•E stablish a budget. It’s easy to go overboard when shopping deals on Black Friday. However, busting the budget on the first day of the holiday shopping season sets a bad precedent for the weeks to come. A holiday debt survey from LendingTree found that

Carriers are unsung heroes of community newspapers An important part of community newspapers is getting them delivered.

Press Publications has 74 youth and adult carriers for its 200 routes.

“We have a host of people in a range of ages who are independent contractors delivering our papers in all kinds of weather, all year long,” said Lisa Graber, Press Publications’ human resources manager.

She said a benefit for young people

is learning responsibility and customer service.

“There are not many jobs for kids under 16 to make their own money,” she said. “Kids learn how to manage and organize their time, the value of customer service by receiving tips and other valuable lessons in running your own small business.”

Graber said being a carrier is a great first job for young people and a

way to interact with the community.

The time commitment is one to two hours a week. Each walking route is 30 to 60 papers.

“I’ve been able to watch these many young people become adults and have very responsible positions,” wrote Gene Johnson, Press Publications’ publisher emeritus. “When I get a chance to talk with them I’ll always ask them about their early

experiences as a carrier. They’ve often remarked how it has been helpful to them.”

Thanksgiving leftover recipes Wondering what to do with your Thanksgiving leftovers?

Here are three recipes to use your leftover turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce.

• 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper Directions: Par-bake the crust according to package directions. Let cool slightly before adding the filling. Sprinkle the stuffing and turkey in the par-baked shell. Top with cheddar and parsley. Season with a little salt and pepper. Whisk together the half and half, eggs, nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in a medium bowl. Pour the custard over the filling.

Adjust oven temperature to 350 degrees and bake until set, 35 to 45 minutes. Let cool at least 30 minutes before serving warm or at room temperature.

Turkey and Stuffing Quiche Ingredients: Crust: • One 9-inch frozen pie shell Filling: • 1 cup crumbled leftover stuffing • 1 cup chopped leftover turkey • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese • 1/4 cup parsley leaves, roughly chopped • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper Custard: • 1 1/4 cups half-and-half • 3 large eggs

Cranberry and Turkey Salad

Ingredients: • 3 cups chopped cooked turkey • 1/2 cup dried cranberries • 1/2 cup sliced almonds • 2 stalks celery, chopped • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise Directions: Mix turkey, cranberries, almonds, celery and mayonnaise in a bowl until well blended. Serve with crackers, over a bed of lettuce or bread.

He recalled when he was in preschool and his preschool teacher asked him, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and he responded, “A Marine.”

“I’m 100% certain a lot of it had to do with seeing pictures of my dad in the uniform, him talking about it,” Arcand said. “I mean there’s something appealing about a challenge, they have

a certain type of reputation about them.”

Arcand enlisted as an infantryman and actually left high school early to head to boot camp. During his 20year military career he was deployed six times. Back in 2010, while he was in between deployments, Arcand launched a nonprofit called American Spartan to help veterans who were wounded in action.

That nonprofit ran until 2017. Arcand explained that the nonprofit wasn’t

“It’s an empty feeling, because it isn’t like they were sick or had cancer or an illness that you could kind of mentally prepare yourself for. It a sudden death,” Cowles said. “I never expected to outlive my children.”

Ahlbeck, to a fentanyl overdose Aug. 16, 2022, while he was in the Stillwater prison. He was serving his fifth year of a seven-year sentence. He leaves behind three children, ages 12, 9 and 6.

“I got a phone call from the prison saying that he had passed away. I was in shock,” she recalled. “At first, they couldn’t tell me what had happened, and then about two weeks later, they finally told me that he had passed from a fentanyl overdose… How does fentanyl get in a prison?”

John Patrick’s heartwarming comedy, “The Curious Savage,” is coming to Mounds View High School Nov. 9 - 12. The play tells the story of Mrs. Ethel P. Savage. Upon her husband’s death, Mrs. Savage inherits $10 million, then plans to establish a fund to support dreamers with whimsical aspirations. Her stepchildren strongly disagree, so to prevent her from sharing their family’s wealth, they have her committed to a sanitarium. It is there that Mrs. Savage, played by Anja Horsman, finds kindness in the residents of “The Cloisters.”

“This play is an engaging experience that presents the true importance of charity and kindness in a world that is often motivated by greed and dishonesty,” says Horsman, a senior at Mounds View High School. “It’s an honor to play the role of such a logical and humorous woman.”

The Mounds View High School Theater Company is under the direction of Matthew van Bruggen, who has worked with several theater arts organizations, including the Minnesota Fringe Festival and Hennepin Theatre Trust. Before accepting the role as district performance facilities manager for Mounds View, he was the assistant theater director at Irondale High School.

“We are thrilled with third place,” said Tom Wentworth, co-head coach with Aaron Thompson. “We were ranked fourth coming in. At the Griak (Invitational), we were sixth among Class 3A teams. We had a lot of personal bests.”

Mounds View finished behind Wayzata and Minnetonka at Les Bolstad Golf Club in Falcon Heights, while out-striding Bloomington Jefferson and Edina, who both beat them at the Griak.

This was Mounds View’s sixth consecutive top-five finish including one champion and one runner-up team.

Stoner made all-state, blazing to 12th place in 15:36.3, which is the lowest time in Mounds View’s many state appearances, the coach said. Stoner moved up 32 places from last year. The top 25 are all-state.

he ran smart. He went out about the 20th and started picking guys off and wound up 12th.”

Following were junior Owen Kalmes, 35th in 16:11.0, senior Otto Coleman, 39th in 16:15.5, senior Levi Hammerbeck, 49th in 16:22.5, junior Sam Geer, 51st in 16:22.9, senior Lincoln Maloney, 86th in 16:41.0, and junior Joseph Cole, 121st in 17:04.7 among 160 state qualifiers.

Last year, Kalmes was 39th and Hammerbeck 47th. Hammerbeck, normally their one or two runner, was battling an illness all week “but he ran a gritty race and helped us hold off Edina,” Wentworth said.

The Suburban East Conference

was well represented, boasting both individual champions — Roseville Area’s Robert Mechura (15:04) and Forest Lake’s Nora Hushagen (17:27) — and three of the top eight boys teams. White Bear Lake was sixth and Stillwater eighth.

Kocon gets metro, state volley honors

Kocon received multiple honors during her senior season on the Mounds View volleyball team.

Audrey Kocon has capped her Mounds View volleyball career with some major honors.

The 6-foot-2 setter and hitter was one of five finalists for Class 4A Miss Volleyball. She was a first-team AllMetro pick by the StarTribune. She was also a second-team pick on the coaches association

all-state team. Kocon compiled 347 kills, 337 assists, 59 aces, 221 digs and 51 blocks this season.

The Providence College recruit finished her Mustang career with 1,367 kills, 1,114 assists, 168 service aces, 861 digs, and 211 blocks.

Two all-staters lead Mustang girls to 4th at state

The Mounds View girls placed fourth in the state cross country meet Saturday, Nov. 4, led by a freshman and senior, both receiving all-state titles.

Linnea Ousdigian, ninth-grader, churned to a 10th-place finish in Class 3A for the second year in a row, finishing in 18:24.9. Joining her on the all-state podium was senior Emily Mehta, who closed her career with a 15th-place finish in 18:43.8, moving up from 49th last year.

The top five teams were Wayzata, Prior Lake, Minnetonka, Mounds View and Duluth East, in action at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights. Gold medalist was conference rival Norah Hushagen out of Forest Lake.

Mounds View slipped one notch after placing third last year, with one all-stater graduating.

“We felt we could have been second, or third,” coach Jimmy McArthur said. “But every girl we had on the course ran her heart out, and we are very proud of them.” The Mustangs were missing one of their top five, Maya Francisco, who was bothered by a stress fracture at sectionals. “If Maya had run, I think we could have been second,” McArthur said.

Following the top two were eighthgrader Abby Urriola, placing 33rd in 19:12.5; sophomore Adela Peterson, 49th in 19:28.7; senior Maya Surve, 116th in 20:37.2; eighth-grader Emma Stupar, 127th in 20:50.3; and eighthgrader Cora Gentry, 140th in 21:06.5.

Ousdigian, whose personal best was 17:59 at the conference meet, said she wasn’t feeling 100 percent Saturday.

“I was hoping to get top ten, which I did. I know if I would have felt better,

I could have placed higher.” After two 10th-place finishes, with three years left, she said her goals are to “keep improving, stay healthy and definitely keep being a contender.”

She wears shades every race. “They always make me feel faster,” she explained, “and they always help me get in a good headspace, before and during races.”

Taylor Isabel, their graduated allstater, now running for the University of Minnesota Gophers, was working the meet with her teammates. “She was out on the course cheering when she could,” Ousdigian said, “and went back to filling up water cups when she had to.”

Mustang swimmers Bina, Turkington advance to state

Mounds View had two state meet entrants — sophomore Ellie Bina in two events and senior Erika Turkington — after they qualified for the state meet in the Section 4AA meet on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Stillwater.

Bina won the 500-meter freestyle

in 5:00.43, 2.2 seconds ahead of East Ridge’s Emma Wood. She also placed second in the 200-meter freestyle in 1:53.56, behind Wood’s time of 1:52.93. Turkington won the 100-meter butterfly in 1:00.15, edging East Ridge’s Melanie Witikko by 0.11 seconds.

Cleveland’s Hentges strong vs. Twins Cleveland slipped to 76-86 this season, after winning the Central Division and advancing to playoffs last season.

In three seasons, Hentges, 27, has appeared in 143 games, posting a 4.33 earned run average (ERA), 7-8 record, one save and 196 strikeouts in 183 innings. The 6-foot-6, 245-pound left-hander has spent two full seasons and one partial season with Cleveland.

Drafted in the fourth round after leading the Mustangs to the 2014 state championship, Hentges has played nine pro seasons overall.

He resides in Arizona, where the club has spring training.

For Sam Hentges, five solid outings against the Minnesota Twins were one of the highlights in his third Major League Baseball season as a middle relief pitcher with the Cleveland Guardians.

Overall, the 2014 Mounds View graduate appeared in 56 games this season, throwing 52 1/3 innings, posting three wins and two losses, a 3.61 earned-runaverage and 56 strikeouts.

Against his home state, the Minnesota Twins, Hentges allowed zero runs in 5 2/3 innings, striking out nine and getting credit for three “holds” or also known as holding the lead he inherited. Even in the Twins’ 20-6 rout of the Guardians on Sept. 4, he threw one scoreless frame.

Nordeen were named to the allSuburban East volleyball team after the Mustangs compiled a 17-12 overall record and 5-4 in the conference. Kocon got most of the team awards: MVP, hardest worker, top offensive and defensive player, and Hard Hat Award. She compiled 347 kills, 337 assists, 59 aces, 221 digs and 51 blocks, Nordeen logged 225 kills and 16 aces.

Getting honorable mentions were junior Kaydence Keller and sophomores Rylee Loween and Victoria Kurilov. Lily Ryan, a junior, got the Most Improved and Rookie of the

Year awards. She had 92 kills and 12 aces. Kurilov notched 139 kills, 80 blocks and 21 aces.

Avery Jeddlinski made 224 digs and Keller 134.

GIRLS SOCCER

Amelia Gregory, Mounds View senior defender, was named an all-state firstteam pick on the coaches’ association Class 3A honor list. Senior midfielders, Sierra Swallen and Anya Westlund were named all-Suburban East. Honorable mentions went to senior Micaela Ledesma, junior Veronica Warren and

sophomore Ivy Nystrom.

Westlund led with nine goals and got the team MVP award. The Mustangs were 7-8-3 overall and 4-3-2 in the conference.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Mounds View/Irondale opened with a 2-2 tie against White Bear Lake on Saturday, then lost 2-1 to Roseville/ Mahtomedi on Tuesday.

Lauren Ballinger scored twice on power plays in the third period against the Bears to pull MVI into a tie.
