New Christmas tree farm makes plans for 2024 season Not this year, but next, families will have another opportunity to create a holiday tradition a bit closer to home. Steve Kavan, of North Oaks, plans to open Kavan Christmas Tree Farm in time for the 2024 holiday season. He purchased the 40-acre property in 2018. “I like the outdoors,” he said. “I’m big on the outdoors and Christmas … (My family) always gets a tree, so somehow I stumbled upon planting Christmas trees.” The property caught his attention, and he said it was affordable, since it was not zoned properly for a house. The property is located right on the S-curve on

He openly admitted he doesn’t have any experience planting or growing trees. “It’s all new. CITIZEN OF THE YEAR: John Suzukida makes a difference in Shoreview FROM PAGE 1
He and his wife, Lori, have lived in Shoreview for 31 years. The couple have three children together, who all live in the Twin Cities, and a total of six grandchildren. “We moved here when our daughter was turning 7 and our sons were 4 and 1,” said Suzukida, “Lori and I are very proud that they have made the most of their Mounds View School and Big Ten university educations to contribute to society in many different ways.” His first volunteer experience in Shoreview was coaching baseball for his sons and doing swimming club stopwatching timing for his daughter. Since then, Suzukida has served on the following boards and committees: • Environmental Quality Committee, 12 years • Rotary Club member and past club president • Clean Energy Resources Team (CERT), six years • Fishing for Fun, which provides a pontoon boat ride for those who couldn’t otherwise be on a boat • Small Sums Board, an organization that helps the homeless keep their jobs • Shoreview Area Youth Baseball • Community Education Advisory Group Suzukida’s volunteer experience mainly revolves around helping
improve the environment as well as being a part of organizations that focus on climate-related things. Most of his career has been spent in energy efficiency spaces, he is driven by the need to not leave future generations to deal with the climate situation, for which he believes that all prior generations are responsible. Suzukida wants to do everything that he can to help in the time he has left. His favorite volunteer memory is from the Rotary Club. The club awards multiple STRIVE scholarships, which are given to students at Mounds View High School who are in the lower third of their class through sophomore year, and who demonstrate the most improvement in their junior or senior years. A parent told Suzukida that everyone who tried for the scholarship was a winner because they felt like someone believed in them even though they had struggled in their first two years of high school. “That heartfelt sharing made the effort that Rotarians put in, raising money and working on youth-oriented programs, incredibly rewarding,” Suzukida mentioned. A few of Suzukida’s favorite things about Shoreview community are the great schools, clean and open spaces and a welcoming and safe community, as well as the Community Center and the library complex.
When Suzukida received the phone call that he had received the award, he was surprised and found the moment surreal. “When Mayor Denkinger called with the news, I told her that I usually like to ‘fly under the radar’ and not be too visible, so it was very much a surprise,” Suzukida said. “Having had the opportunity of knowing many of the prior Citizens of the Year, and what they have all quietly done over long periods of time, made it kind of surreal.” What continues to drive Suzukida to volunteer is the deep appreciation of keeping the opportunities that the community has had in the past need commitment and energy to make them even better for generations to come. When asked about what it means to receive this award, Suzukida said, “It is very much an appreciated honor, but I feel as if I’m just one of the very many people who just try to help keep our community strong for the future.” He said that if someone is looking to start volunteering in Shoreview, they should “take a look at the many ways that are available to volunteer, find something that fits you and give it a try. “Volunteers make the difference between Shoreview being a very good place to live to being a great place to live.”

Holiday celebrations and
T
sorrows
he decorations are out, treats are being made, and parties are coming up. December can be a busy month of celebrations and fun times with friends and family. However for those who have lost a loved one, the the holiday spirit can be overshadowed by grief, loss and isolation. As we head into the holiday season, our thoughts are with several of our friends who are grieving the loss of a parent or loved one this year. This past week our community was overcome with grief as we learned Samson Walters, a sophomore at Mahtomedi High School, died Saturday from injuries sustained Publisher’s in a car accident that occurred earlier in the week on his way to View school. Samson was a lacrosse Carter Johnson teammate and friend of my son’s. There have been many emotions and lots of tears, but no adequate words can express how totally heartbroken we are for his family and all who knew and loved him. The student community came together at St. Andrew’s Church in Mahtomedi before school Friday morning for a prayer service for Samson and his family. The new fellowship hall was packed, mostly with students from Mahtomedi, White Bear Lake and other area high schools who wanted to offer prayer support and to be together to support each other in a time of tragedy. They, too, will forever be impacted by the life and loss of a friend and classmate. It was an amazing opportunity that Pastor Brian Norsman and the staff at St. Andrews provided to the kids and the community. Where can people turn in times of tragedy? I think our local churches are a great resource. Several local churches recently held workshops on the topic of dealing with grief and loss during the holidays. Many churches have ongoing grief support groups. There are also support groups for caregivers, for those going through a divorce or job loss, and more. In most cases, these groups and sessions are free and open to everyone, so you don’t necessarily have to be a member of the church to participate. Churches are of course a place for worship, but they also provide so much more. If you are experiencing grief, loneliness, or any kind of hardship right now, check into the various ways our local churches can provide help and ongoing support. If you aren’t currently attending or involved with a specific church, the next few weeks will be a great time to go around and check out what our local churches have to offer, because they are already geared up for the influx of new people who attend during the holidays. Check out our church directory in the papr for information about locations and service times. The spirit of the season is also about giving, and December is the time many organizations make their year-end appeals for donations. Find the causes that are important to you and make a financial gift, donate your time by volunteering, or do both. A family outing with younger children could include picking out toys to donate to toy drives or bell-ringing for the Salvation Army. There is no shortage of ways to make an impact by giving, and the need is great. People want to lean on each other both in times of sorrow and celebration. Enjoy all of the upcoming holiday parties, and look for the many ways you can spread love and joy to those around you this season. Carter Johnson is publisher of Press Publications. Talking adult family dynamics with U of M
A
s we head into the winter holiday season and the many gatherings with immediate and extended family that this season can bring, University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development family therapist and professor Tai Mendenhall shares his expertise about how to navigate adult family dynamics. Q: What are the most common themes you observe in adult family dynamics? A: Family scholars have identified myriad relational dynamics that play out differently across healthy versus unhealthy families, and these vary in the ways that they manifest across different cultures and social groups. Some of the most common themes include: • Communication: how we express ourselves to each other, and how we listen to and/or receive others when they talk with us. • Closeness and cohesion: how close and engaged we are, or how distant and disengaged we are. • Adaptability: how we solve problems and navigate stress together. Most of these dynamics are best when they are somewhere between “too much” and “too little”, and they evolve over time and context. They also tend to shift between parents and children as the children grow up.
Q: What should parents keep in mind when their adult children visit? A: Remember that they are adults now. The manners in which they do any variety of things may be different than the ways that you would do things — from cooking to driving to responding to an acting-out child. Your job as their parent is no longer to guide, teach and discipline as you did when they were young. Pick your battles with your adult children and don’t sweat the small stuff. The visit is temporary, so enjoy time together — visit, share, play games, see shows or exchange gifts. Q: How can adult children approach family visits? A: Your parents are still your parents. If you are visiting them in their home, respect that it is their space, not yours. For example, don’t change the thermostat without asking them first and remember to clean up after yourself. Be sure to engage with them in authentic conversations; avoid scrolling through social media and watching TV independently. Q: What advice would you give to family members about navigating difficult conversations such as politics? A: It depends. If the family members who are visiting each other are not especially close or if the visit is only going to be for a couple of hours over a holiday
meal or gift-exchange, it might be best to just keep politics off the table. If family members are more invested in navigating potentiallyheated conversations, find some common ground about things that you both agree about. Listen to understand, not to respond, attack, criticize or defend. Remember that it is doubtful that you will substantively change each other’s mind or position, i.e., “win” the argument. The best outcome is to sustain — and sometimes even enrich! — the relationship. Q: Where can people find more information about this topic and how does the U of M support healthy family dynamics? A: I would encourage anyone who is really struggling with couple and family dynamics to seek support – the earlier, the better – through a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT). These professionals specialize in working with family systems through a variety of interpersonal processes in problem-solving, healing and growth. The U of M trains many of the therapists and counselors in our state that provide this critical support to families.

SHOREVIEW CITY COUNCIL SNIPPETS
Residents need to be aware of refuse provider plan
• A new tax levy for 2024-2025 was proposed at the workshop. The 2024 tax levy proposed was $98,520 less than the preliminary amount approved by the council and certified to the county in September. General fund revenue adjustments reduced the final levy by an additional $28,000 and expenditure adjustments reduced the tax levy by $70,020. Significant reductions included the police contract ($25,780) and the fire contract ($49,081). According to the information provided by the Ramsey County assessor, the median singlefamily home value in Shoreview will increase from $397,000 for 2023 taxes, to $416,800 for 2024 taxes. This is a 7.3% increase in value. • At the City Council workshop, Charnelle Dengnouse, Shoreview’s new human resources director, was introduced to the City Council. Dengnouse previously worked for the city of Robbinsdale in a similar capacity. According to staff, she brings a strong background in human
The city of Shoreview is about to make a decision on what garbage provider can pick up residential trash and how much residents will pay for it. There are many issues with this plan, including the broad lack of awareness by residents who will be stuck with higher bills if it is implemented. Environmental and noise issues are reportedly at the root of this topic. The impact of 2-3 different refuse collection providers in the city once a week pales in comparison to the countless UPS, FedEx, Amazon, Speedee, Instacart, semi, Uber and Lyft vehicles (to name a few) that drive throughout the city each and every day. In 2022 there was a survey of some 700 residents, the results of which implied support for this program (41% opposed). That’s an awfully small sampling, and one that I suspect did not include the implications of such a program if it were to be implemented. This survey also omitted the “Don’t Know or Refuse to Answer” options, which were included in prior years’ surveys. When those options were present and combined with the opposed statistics, the survey results exceeded 60% in opposition. Why was that option omitted in this most recent survey? The decision to implement restrictions upon citizens in our rights to select our own service providers is not consistent with the beliefs of the residents of Shoreview. The resulting increased costs to us citizens and the likely degradation of service and quality are not what the citizens of Shoreview are asking for. Please contact the mayor and City Council and voice your opinion on the city telling you who will collect your garbage and what you will pay for the privilege. Hans Molenaar Shoreview

Former Army Ammunition Plant adds homes
In 2013, Ramsey County purchased a 427acre parcel of the former Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant from the U.S. Government with the intent to redevelop and return the property to the economic engine it once was. The site was renamed The Rice Creek Commons in 2014. The development project in Arden Hills is considering adding 500 housing units to the former ammunition plant. It will also feature businesses and retail in hopes to build an inclusive economy, have long-term sustainable development and develop an energy-forward community by providing housing at a variety of income levels. Work to clean and clear the former ammunition plant has been completed. The site was cleaned to residential standards. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency have removed the site’s soil and surface water from the state and federal Superfunds list. The U.S. Army will continue to operate the existing groundwater cleanup system. For more information on the development, go to www.ramseycounty.us/rice-creek-commons. that will be ready; however, he does plan to supplement demand by bringing in some pre-cut trees for customers. He has planted a variety of trees, including: balsam fir, Fraser fir, Canaan fir, Norway pine, white pine and Colorado spruce. He said he has had the best luck so far with balsam fir, as it is native to Minnesota. It has been a lot of “trial and error.” Kavan hopes the farm might just be his children’s first work experience. He and his wife have two children, 11-yearold Lydia and 8-year-old Wade, who both attend Turtle Lake Elementary School in Shoreview. Kavan has committed to

donating at least 5% of his proceeds to Centennial School as well as the Centennial Community Food Shelf. “It will be a fun holiday memory for people,” Kavan said. “They can have a great time outdoors, and it is relaxing.” The cut-your-own tree farm will likely open the week before Thanksgiving 2024 and be open for a few weekends after that. adventure. He has visited several other tree farms to compare notes and learn. In addition to several trips to Krueger’s Tree Farm in Lake Elmo, last winter he volunteered there. “The industry has been great relative to other industries I’ve been in,” he said. “People are super nice, friendly and supportive. It’s refreshing … they don’t look at me as a competitor, they look at it as they need more farmers.” He explained it is hard to get people in the industry because it takes so long before the trees are ready to be sold. On average, he said it takes about eight years. So come next year, he said he will have some trees

Last year — 2nd in kick and jazz in the Suburban East Conference Captains — Natalie Kaplan, Madeline Nagel, Jasmine Raja and Alyssa Truong Fast facts — Mounds View opened on Nov. 16 with a Suburban East meet and placed first in jazz. Coach Amundson says —” We are so excited for our routines
this season! This year our varsity jazz is an upbeat, sassy, true jazz dance to the 80’s song “Venus” by Bananarama. Our dancers absolutely love this routine! Our varsity kick is a Missy Elliot remix called ‘Holla’ filled with lots of intricate formation changes, strong kick technique and exciting choreography. We can’t wait to debut our routine.”

What’s too cold for animals left outdoors in the winter? When Animal Humane Society (AHS) agents get calls from the public about animal cruelty, you may be surprised why most people call them. No, it’s not a broken leg or signs of physical abuse: it’s cold weather. Every year our agents are flooded with calls about dogs and cats outdoors during the cold, wintry months. When it comes to cold-weather animal reports, it’s important to gather specific information about the animal to help our humane agents conduct the most thorough investigation. Here’s what you should consider: • What breed is the animal and how old is it? Elderly and thin-coated animals are more susceptible to cold weather. • What does the animal look like? Are the hips and rib bones very prominent or visible? Does it have any sores or missing fur? Are its ears, tail tips, or paw pads frostbitten?
- Have a windbreak between November 1 and March 31, and the animal must be provided with enough bedding, such as hay, straw, cedar shavings, blankets, etc., to provide insulation and retain body heat. • Minnesota does not have tethering laws, so an animal may be tied out. However, animals that are tied out must be free from entanglement or injury from the collar or tie-out cord/chain. Lastly, animals should never be left in unoccupied vehicles when adverse weather conditions could affect their health or welfare. For example, a dog cannot be left unattended in a vehicle where there is danger of hypothermia or freezing. If you find an animal in conditions that appear questionable, please contact your animal control division or www.animalhumanesociety.org/resource/ reporting-animal-cruelty-minnesota for assistance.

• How is the animal acting? Are they active, or are they shivering or lethargic? Shivering and lethargy could be indications of hypothermia. • Is the animal being fed and watered appropriately and consistently? Is the water clean and unfrozen? • Outside animals that are subject to cold weather conditions that affect their health or welfare must have access to appropriate shelter. Shelters don’t have to be heated, but they must: -B e moisture-proof and windproof. The shelter must be durable with no holes in the roof or sides. A tarp is not sufficient. -B e of suitable size to accommodate the animal. It must allow for retention of body heat. For example, an unheated garage may not be adequate shelter as it may be too big to allow the animal to retain their body heat. The exception is that outdoor farm dogs may be provided access to a barn, if there is sufficient loose hay or bedding for protection.

Bina, Mustang swimmer, nabs 2 more state medals BY BRUCE STRAND SPORTS CONTRIBUTOR
Ellie Bina, a Mounds View swimmer, churned to third- and seventh-place finishes in the state Class 2A meet Nov. 17-18, lifting her career total of four state medals. The sophomore freestyler tied for third in the 500 finals with a time of 4:58.10, behind swimmers from Prior Lake and Edina, after placing third in the preliminaries with 4:56.24. She placed seventh in the 200 finals with 1:53.11, after a thirdplace prelim with 1:51.84. The meet was held at the University of Minnesota. As a freshman, Bina was fifth in the 500 and seventh in the 200. “My goals going into the meet were really just
to place better than I did my freshman year,” Bina said. “I placed seventh in the 200 again, which I wasn’t overly happy about, but I was happy with my 500.” Bina’s prelim times broke her school records which she set last year. She lowered her 500-record time by five seconds. Bina also swims for the North Suburban Aquatic Club. During club during the off-season, she is focused “on distance races like the mile and the 400 individual medley,” which are not MSHSL events. Currently, she is training for the upcoming Winter Juniors in Illinois. Mounds View’s other state qualifier, Erika Turkington in butterfly, did not advance to finals.
Evan Hatton set team records of 23 1/2 career sacks and 50 other tackles for loss.
