MVHS technology enters the future BY SARA MARIE MOORE STAFF WRITER
3-D printing is on the rise. And Mounds View High School aims to keep up. This fall, MVHS set up two 3-D printers in its library technology room, along with an Epilog laser engraver and cutter system. Students have been relishing the opportunity to design and print 3-D items. There is no class built around the printers yet, but every student can use them. “Kids come up here on a daily basis ... and just build things,” said Principal Jeff Ridlehoover. Nancy Weinhagen, who has been the high school’s technology support specialist for 15 years, oversees the projects. “Any student can bring us a project they would like to print,” she said. “We just ask that it is school-appropriate.” Students come in before and after school, during lunch and when their schedules are open to start a project on the printer. Larger items can take over 10 hours to print, so sometimes projects print overnight. The after-school robotics club has been using the printers the most.

Ramsey county tax levy increasing BY KRISTINE GOODRICH WHITE BEAR PRESS EDITOR
After three years of flat taxes in Ramsey County, taxes are going up in 2016. The Ramsey County board last week approved a 2016 property tax levy of $284.4 million, which is a 2.8 percent increase over 2015. The final levy is the same as the preliminary maximum that was established in September and used to calculate the notices of proposed taxes that property owners have received. For the owner of a median-valued home of $208,000 in suburban Ramsey County, taxes will increase approximately $18. The taxes will fund 43 percent of the county’s 2016 budget. The budget was set at $645.1 million, which is a 3.6 percent increase. The Ramsey County Board also set a preliminary budget and levy for 2017. A budget of $660.8 SEE TAX LEVY, PAGE 20
