Familiar faces recognized by area chamber

As members of the White Bear Area Chamber of Commerce lunched, they listened to keynote speaker Steve Grove, commissioner of the state Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED).

But first came special recognitions of familiar names and faces in the White Bear community.

New 2022 Chamber Chair Scott Bromelkamp, MidwestOne Bank, was introduced by outgoing chair Rita Pechmann at the group’s annual meeting April 15 at Keller Golf Course.

After his introduction, Bromelkamp, a Mahtomedi High School grad, then presented special Legacy awards to John Lupo, Ellen Hiniker and Jo Emerson.

“John was always the voice of reason,” Bromelkamp said as he announced Lupo’s award. Hiniker was described as “always kind and level-headed with a great sense of humor.”

Sigh of relief as church debt paid in full

The wringing of hands is over for St. Mary of the Lake priest Fr. Ralph Talbot, who helped lead his flock out from under a sizable debt.

His recent announcement that the 140-year-old church was now debt-free was a long time coming for the congregation, which rallied to pay off $10.1 million in 10 years — five years ahead of schedule.

Talbot inherited the debt when he came to White Bear Lake in 2011. Nine years earlier, the parish borrowed $12.1 million for a much-needed expansion of the parochial

school and Life Parish Center, doubling the space to serve both students, staff and community.

The generosity of church members, the archdiocese and local businesses and a close working relationship with Premier Bank were credited with paying off the debt.

The priest thought about the euphoric feeling of being debt-free while attending last week’s meeting with the finance council. “It used to be one of my most dreaded meetings,” Talbot admitted.

“We were wringing our hands wondering how to pay off the debt, while still doing our ministry. It took 20% of our

budget. It wasn’t sustainable.” The word bankruptcy was spoken, he said, but the church leader never thought it would come to that.

The monthly debt payment alone was about $10,000.

Since that joyful February day the bank marked the loan “paid in full,” the finance meeting is one of his favorites, added the priest. “We’re in a beautiful place now,” Talbot said. “We can focus on our mission to advance the name of Jesus.”

And for that, Fr. Talbot is grateful.

Hughes noted that the previous application, a planned unit development, was more limiting regarding size of the homes and floor plan, alluding to the fact there could be even more people living under the current scenario, meaning parking could still be an issue on the cul-de-sac. That was a source of contention with the former plan, which failed to garner approval.

Walsh added that there is vacation work to do south of Clarence Street for a future agenda.

• Awarded bid for the 2022 pavement rehabilitation project to Park Construction Co. for $2,435,000. The project includes 2 miles of mill and overlay and 0.9 miles of full reconstruction west of Hwy. 61 and north of Hwy. 96. The city received five bids. The project should start mid-May or after road restrictions are lifted by MnDOT. • Authorized general obligation bond sale in amount of $3,025,000 for the street improvement project. Funding for debt service will come from a tax levy and special assessments to benefitting property owners. Finance Director Kerri Kindsvater said the annual tax levy will range from $199,000 to $203,000 over the 15-year life of the bond.

• Proclaimed Arbor Day as May 19. This year, city staff and volunteers will replace dead and diseased trees in Weyerhaeuser Park, 1705 Ninth St. The city is

committed to maintaining its urban forest, said Public Works Director Paul Kauppi. Arbor Day recognizes the importance of trees.

• Approved use of Railroad Park for a free Army band concert 7 p.m. July 11.

• Recognized departing environmental advisory commission member Bob Winkler.

He’s served as a volunteer member since 2018.

• Approved Big Wood Brewery request to use the public parking lot on Third Street for a German festival noon to 10 p.m. April 23.

Walsh joked he’d like to propose an amendment that they remain in White Bear Lake. “It’s a bummer they’re leaving,” he said. The brewery is moving to Garceau’s Corner in Vadnais Heights.

• Heard from City Manager Lindy Crawford that 2022 is proving a busy one for the planning department. Firstquarter numbers show 496 permits have been issued with a value of $28,045,000. In 2021, 531 permits were pulled totaling $11,136,000.

Of the total, three large projects account for $22.4 million: a $15 million mechanical HVAC permit for North Campus; a Level Up Academy storm shelter for $6 million; and a fire suppression permit at North for $1,430,000. “It’s a record year already,” Crawford told council.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — A request for five variances was approved for the new McNeely Music Center at 4910 Hwy. 61.

The current building, a former realty office, will be demolished and replaced with a two-story music center on the same footprint. Recording and teaching studios are planned with a main floor lobby/reception area and upstairs meeting room.

Variances are for front and side yard setbacks, parking stalls and a variance from the 50% limit on use of metal panels as the primary exterior building material. That number will be 69%. An architect for the applicant said the metal is a high-quality material with a champagne sheen.

“Staff is confident the building will look quite elegant,” said Samantha Crosby, planning and zoning coordinator.

A parking variance keeps the stall number at 18. A review of city files showed the parking lot east of the site was dedicated to the city as a joint venture of the previous owner and Bill Foussard, owner of the White Bear Country Inn. Crosby told City Council April 12 staff had just received a letter of support from Foussard for the project. Council Member Bill Walsh said he was relieved to see the hotel owner is in favor. “If anyone has a parking complaint, it should be the hotel,” he noted.

Council Member Dan Jones said the music center is a welcome addition to the arts district, a comment echoed by the mayor.

“The idea of a modern, state-of-theart music center is a great addition to White Bear Lake,” said Mayor Dan Louismet.

The center is being financed by the Manitou Fund, a private foundation based in White Bear Lake.

Council also conducted the following business at last week’s meeting: • Approved Tice Estate preliminary plat at 1788 Highway 96 E. The plan was revised to reduce units by two with no homeowners association. One lot will be subdivided into five to include the original homestead, two twin homes and two singlefamily homes.

All lots meet code for size, width and setbacks. A 60-foot wide paved pedestrian easement accesses Columbia Park to the west. The developer will pay for paving. It has not been determined who will maintain the path.

Public parking reserved for cars, not tables WHITE BEAR LAKE — Dining on public right of way post-pandemic is likely a thing of the past.

Staff was directed by City Council to research and recommend a formal review process to consider restaurant requests to use public right of way for outdoor seating.

Establishments are already asking the city’s permission to continue that use this year, said Tracy Shimek, housing and economic development coordinator.

The city implemented an interim review process during COVID-19 to consider requests to allow use of sidewalks and parking spaces for outdoor seating in an effort to support restaurants that were particularly challenged during the pandemic.

“Given the return to normal operations, the use of public parking for such uses would be incompatible with the current level of parking demand,” Shimek said.

She asked for council guidance on how to respond to these requests.

“We owe it to all business owners to have a fair and transparent process. There was nothing dubious about past requests, but it was never formalized,” noted Mayor Dan Louismet. “It was temporary during COVID and it makes sense to dial those back. Circumstances have changed.”

Council Member Dan Jones said “no” to using parking space. “I’m not saying we have a parking problem, but it’s valuable.” He also suggested charging a fee for businesses that use the sidewalk. “Some restaurants have spent considerable money on a patio or rooftop. Is that fair?” he asked. Council Member Heidi Hughes concurred, saying the space shouldn’t be given

away for free.

Council Member Kevin Edberg agreed that private use of public parking should be discontinued, but he’s “not keen on fees for sidewalks.” He does like the idea of seating on sidewalks, finding it “friendly and encouraging.”

Edberg then asked if existing relationships will remain in the interim. The mayor replied, “that’s a fair point. Those carved out the last two years for the pandemic versus those that have been there a long time, I see as two different things.”

“Frankly, it was a made-up thing,” noted City Attorney Troy Gilchrist. “Businesses needed flexibility.

We took a flier on it and said ‘let’s do it.’ Now that restrictions have gone away, I would discourage further use of that flexibility.”

Shimek pointed out the special permits were annual and have expired.

Downtown’s Main Street group is not in favor of continuing the expanded outdoor seating on public parking spaces, Shimek told council. As staff drafts recommendations on a codified review process for council, she plans to continue to engage Main Street group members for their thoughts on the matter.

ome of the words we use to describe eating, like consume and a healthy, balanced diet are also appropriate when describing how and where we get our news and information.

While preparing for an upcoming website redesign a few years ago, I decided to try and harness the perspective and experiences of some of the young reporters and editors (all under the age of 30) working in our newsroom at the time. As an information omnivore, I was hoping to get some inspiration and maybe discover some innovative and interesting websites. Instead, I found out that none of the four employees — that I questioned in an informal gathering of information — visited websites to get their news. They all said that they got their news from social media feeds. I was surprised and a little disheartened, but accepted the information and moved forward with the redesign, figuring that our Angle of website audience was, in varying degrees, a combination of different View demographics. The one request I had Paul Dols at the time, as a way of harnessing the exposure, was that when Press articles were shared on social media they would also be linked back to our website.

Personally, I’ve never liked the idea of an algorithm or anyone deciding the content and source of the news I should be consuming. In the intervening years since my impromptu newsroom questioning we have experienced contentious elections and a worldwide pandemic. There has also been some backlash and ethical questions aimed at the negative affects of social media, but it still continues to be a dominant force. Thanks to silicon valley insiders who were willing to speak out, fundamental functions of social media organizations, including Facebook, have been revealed to be based on algorithms designed to exploit addictive behavior, not provide useful information.

The old adage of “You are what you eat” can also be used as a metaphor for media consumption. In an article in the Brag, an online news site based in Sydney, Australia, Rys Hope provides some specific examples of the news diet metaphor including “Catchy headlines act as addictive sugars, confirmatory articles mirror comfort food, and opposing viewpoints are like the detoxifying kale smoothie that is so easy to push away.” Whether you’re referencing a news feed, a buffet or an ala carte menu, once you start thinking about the food and media metaphor, the logic can be applied in a variety of ways. I received “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” as a gift years ago, and I still periodically think about some of the findings in the book. From the journalistic point of view, I’ve always respected the way the author Michael Pollan approached the subject of the impact of our food choices with a sense of discovery, not just as a way to support an agenda or preconceived notions. The importance of finding out how our food is produced and where it comes from is a concept we can use practically on a daily basis and can also be applied to sources for news.

Some of my duties here at Press Publications include overseeing the flow of content and overall functioning of the website. When readers occasionally encounter problems on the site, I’m thankful that they care enough to let us know and help trouble shoot and I’m sincerely grateful that they’ve made the choice to be a subscriber. As the current subscriber campaign proceeds, please be patient. We’re still working on streamlining the process. Sometimes it can be confusing, but the first step to any interaction on the website is the creation of a user account. You’ll know it’s finished when it looks and feels like rich soil, usually within 6 months. Bonus- a well-kept compost pile doesn’t stink!

If you prefer to compost communally, Ramsey County yard waste sites are open for drop offs. *Take note that because of the threat of jumping worms, they’re not accepting dirt or sod.

Conserving Water White Bear Lake is facing water restrictions like many other cities. The DNR recommended a 55-gallon per capita per day limit; we’re currently at over 80-gpcd.

Remember to water early in the morning or later in the evening to make every drop count.

Plant drought tolerant plants. There are many native prairie flowers that, once established, thrive without watering.

Planting a rain garden in a spot that regularly collects water after a downpour helps water absorb instead of runoff.

Mulching your gardens can conserve around 25% of water evaporation, plus add organic matter as it decomposes.

Harvest Rainwater by attaching a rain barrel to your gutters. Controlling Pests and Diseases Naturally Using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices helps us learn about the pest or disease before applying a chemical solution. Many gardeners overuse chemicals or use them when they won’t help the pest or disease. IPM begins with learning more about the problem. Next, you’ll look at environmental, physical, and biological ways to address the problem before pulling out the spray bottle.

Calling veterans, volunteers for Cemetery Cleanup Day

Complex issues not addressed in editorial

I need to respond to Sen. Chamberlain’s editorial from April 6, which claimed that training all K-5 teachers in the LETRS program will “dramatically change outcomes for Minnesota students,” and that it will improve mental health and behavioral problems as well.

Steven Johnson pointed out in his April 13 reply that Chamberlain’s claim that Mississippi’s students are scoring better than those in Minnesota is untrue. In her reply, Barbara Hinz also brought into questions the assumption that the LETRS program alone explained recent improvements in Mississippi’s reading scores.

Even if LETRS training were shown to impact reading scores in some grades, this alone cannot address the many needs and funding challenges in our public schools. Schools, like everyone else, feel the effects of inflation. I sit on the finance committee of a local charter school. Our heating costs alone this year have increased by 25% even after we turned the heat down in our buildings to help balance the budget. Like many public schools, we struggle to retain quality teachers because we can not offer competitive salaries. An investment in training, no matter how effective, will be money wasted if teachers keep leaving the profession because legislators are unwilling to adequately fund our schools. And while academic struggles can contribute to mental health issues, the recent explosion of mental health needs among our youth cannot be adequately addressed with better phonics instruction. As a parent and teacher of 25 years, I have firsthand experience with students who struggle with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression who are excellent students academically.

The current education budget proposal in the Senate provides zero dollars to support many financial challenges facing public schools such as inflation, mental health needs and staff retention.

I appreciate Sen. Chamberlain’s interest in improving reading instruction, but if he truly cares about Minnesota students. I invite him to look beyond his narrow focus on one program he claims to be a magic bullet, and listen to school boards, educators and parents to address the complex issues facing schools and students right now.

More than 50 Civil War veterans and numerous others from other wars and conflicts are interred in White Bear Lake cemeteries. Over the years, the headstones and memorial plates have become overgrown and have fallen into disrepair. In anticipation of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, the VFW Post 1782 and American Legion Post 168 have joined together for a day of service spent beautifying the grounds where these precious veterans have been laid to rest.

Veterans and volunteers are invited to join the effort at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at Union Cemetery, located south of Highway 96 one block west of Highway 61. The group will go to the cemeteries at St. Mary’s of the Lake and St. John in the Wilderness later in the day. An alternative date is set for 1 p.m.

May 8 in case of bad weather.

Readers may have seen some information circulating on social media that Crisp & Green is coming to White Bear Lake.

The fast-casual salad chain, which has been around since 2016, recently announced 10 new locations in Minnesota, including Lino Lakes, and White Bear Lake. Lino Lakes City Planner Katie Larsen said she has yet to hear anything about the Lino Lakes location. White Bear Lake City Manager Lindy Crawford also confirmed that no one on city staff is aware of a Crisp & Green coming to White Bear Lake.

A representative of Crisp & Green said the news is true and not a rumor, but would not comment on any specifics about locations or when doors could open for business.

POLITICAL BRIEF Strom announces candidacy for District 36A Susie Strom has announced she plans to run as a DFL candidate for Minnesota House District 36A. Strom grew up in Coon Rapids but now resides in North Oaks. As a result of the redistricting process, District 36A includes Lino Lakes, Circle Pines, Centerville, North Oaks and a small portion of White Bear Lake.

DNR BRIEF DNR issues burning restrictions The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced open burning restrictions are in effect for the following counties in the Press’ circulation area: Ramsey, Washington, Anoka, and Chisago. The restrictions were implemented due to wildfire risk from warm temperatures and dry conditions.

The DNR will not issue permits for open burning of brush or yard waste in these counties until restrictions are lifted.

Residents are encouraged to use alternatives to burning to dispose of yard waste, such as composting, chipping, or taking brush to a collection site. For more information, visit mndnr. gov/wildfire/prevention.

People cause 90% of wildfires in Minnesota. If a debris fire rekindles or escapes, the person who set it is liable for any damage caused, as well as for wildfire suppression costs.

Treasure hunters will have the opportunity to pick up items that are marked as "free" any time that day.

ST. MARY’S: Generous members pay debt FROM PAGE 1A

St. Mary’s congregation has always included members with means.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Mary T. Hill, the wife of railroad baron James J. Hill, attended Mass at the White Bear church while staying at the family’s summer residence, North Oaks Farm. Built in 1881, the church was located where the school and parish offices sit now and was an easy buggy ride on Sunday mornings. In 1919, her diary indicated Mary gave $10,000 to a “very happy” Fr. Fahey to pay off the school debt.

After her death in 1921, three of her daughters donated money to build a new church a block north at Bald Eagle Avenue and Fourth Street. A plaque dedicated to the Hill matriarch (written in Latin) still hangs in the sanctuary.

During Talbot’s tenure, the largest gift applied to the church debt was a $500,000 check from a donor who will remain anonymous. Gifts from St. Mary’s families came in during multiple capital campaigns, through stock contributions, IRA distributions and special honorariums.

Sacrifices were made by many who committed amounts large and small to pay off the debt, Talbot noted.

“Some gave $10 a week, some gave $10,000 or $100,000. People gave what they could. All of that together got us to ‘paid in full.’”

It’s actually the first time in 40 years the church has been debt-free.

“I am grateful to those who made this day possible,” Talbot said.

“Their generosity saved tens of thousands of dollars in interest. And while we were paying down the debt, we also made about $2 million worth of renovations and repairs that had been delayed because of the debt.”

Even people outside the parish donated. “They recognize that the church is strong when parishes are

strong,” Talbot observed. “They saw us as not being able to fulfill our mission, so they stepped forward, especially in this last campaign, to help us. I told our members if people outside the parish are willing to invest in us, that’s a great sign of encouragement.”

Now that the church is free of debt, members have been asked to “dream.”

Talbot is still tabulating results of the “dream” survey asking parishioners what the church should do next.

Additional tuition assistance for Frassati families is mentioned, as are outreach programs to help the homeless and a church-sponsored school in Haiti. Another popular suggestion was to bring back funeral luncheons.

Gratitude was also expressed to the late Fr. Roger Pierre and retired priest Fr. Rodger Bauman “who had the vision to expand the parish campus. It was fortuitous,” Talbot said.

“As the school grew, we needed that space.”

The priest has just over a year to see some of the dream items realized.

By June 2023, Talbot will know his next assignment, which he said will probably be his last.

Every six years, pastors are reassigned by the archbishop, a term that can be renewed. Talbot asked for that consideration back in 2017 when the church was in the midst of the debt campaign, extensive repairs and starting a new parish school. He doesn’t know where he’ll go, but it will be somewhere in the metro area.

For now, he’s focused on bringing the congregation back post-COVID. Numbers before the pandemic were 1,800 people at weekend Mass. “It’s slowly coming back,” said the priest.

“We had about 1,400 for Palm Sunday.

So we’re close.”

Preventing deer from dining on precious plants

Life in Minnesota wouldn't be the same without the presence of deer.

With spring finally here, people are itching to get out into their winter-worn lawns and gardens. But plants, flowers and shrubs in your yard or garden can be a buffet for deer to feast upon.

Deer will eat just about anything if they are hungry enough. Some years they may eat or sample something they have never bothered in prior years.

Keeping your yard deer-proof can be as simple as the plants, flowers and shrubs in your yard.

However, there are some flowers and plants that are not their favorites.

These are referred to as “deerresistant” plants.

Here is a list of some deer-resistant plants: • Yarrow 18”-3’ Drought tolerant; prefers full sun – Achillea.

• Ageratum 6-24” Beautiful blue, pink or white flowers; easy to grow – Ageratum houstonianum.

• Ornamental onion 1-4’ Many forms and species; tough and may selfseed – Allium.

• Columbine 1-3’ Short-lived, but self-seeds; showy flowers – Aquilegia canadensis.

• Begonia 8-2’ Dependable flowers; shade and drought tolerant – Begonia semperflorens.

• Coneflower 2-3’ Native; attracts birds and butterflies; well-drained soil – Echinacea purpurea.

• Heliotrope 18-24” Cherrypie fragrance; tough, longlasting flowers – Heliotropium arborescens.

• Sweet alyssum 4-12” Edging

According to the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners, young, tender plants, new growth and flower buds are generally more appealing to deer than the older, tougher parts of a plant, or flowers that have opened completely. Deer prefer plants with lush foliage and high water content, such as hosta and early spring plants like tulips, crocuses and forsythia.

Also, deer prefer fruiting and berry producing plants.

Deer are less attracted to herbs and strongly scented or flavored plants and plants with fuzzy or hairy stems and leaves. They are also less attracted to prickly plants, ferns and grasses.

the “level-headed” part, but added, “I’m also emotional,” as she wiped her eyes after receiving the award.

Bromelkamp said that during Emerson’s 12 years as mayor, she was “a fabulous ambassador for the chamber, attending many ribbon-cuttings for new businesses. She will forever remain a champion of rights for everyone, and we wish her the best.”

Like Hiniker, Emerson was surprised to get the award. “I was here for Ellen,” she admitted.

Outgoing chair Rita Pechmann was also recognized for her leadership and dedication.

Bromelkamp introduced the Lake Area Bank vice president, as “our rock. And we can’t thank her enough.”

Minnesota residents may not know that the DEED commissioner was a Google executive in Silicon Valley for 12 years before returning to his home state three years ago. Grove also founded a nonprofit with his wife called Silicon North Stars in 2014. Its purpose is to provide free tech education to underprivileged ninth graders in a kind of summer tech boot camp.

The commissioner told chamber members the state is lagging far behind when it comes to technology education.

“Tech jobs are growing faster than any other job in the state,” according to Groves. “But the Minnesota pipeline for tech jobs is not great.”

On the up side, the state’s economy is rebounding from losing 417,000 jobs during the pandemic. “We are 80% of the way back,” Grove said. “We now have 205,000 job vacancies, so the pendulum has swung the other way.”

March job numbers released last week also offers good news. Unemployment rate is as low as it’s been since 1999, and there are 11,500 new jobs in the state, Grove continued, which puts the state third in job growth percentage in the country.

“Minnesota is a great place to live,” he said.

“We have a lot to celebrate, but we need to be louder. We do not talk about ourselves enough, and we need to do more to attract workers. We have the most diverse economy in the country, and that is an incredibly valuable asset.”

Grove also noted: • 40% more businesses were created last year than the previous, “so people are starting stuff.”

• There is a disparity between whites and people of color regarding jobs. For 253 black workers who applied for unemployment insurance, there were 103 white workers.

• Minnesota needs more warm bodies.

There are 2.7 open jobs for every one person looking. Nationwide, that number is about 1.7.

• Lack of affordable child care is a huge challenge. The state is 90,000 slots short for day care.

• There are great opportunities for jobs that do not require a college degree, particularly in manufacturing.

Police Week proclaimed as salute to law enforcement WHITE BEAR LAKE —A proclamation recognizing May 11-17 as Police Week was read by Mayor Dan Louismet during the April 12 City Council meeting.

The proclamation is meant as a public salute to the service that law enforcement officers provide locally and across the country. The recognition noted that 800,000 officers serve in communities across the United States, of which nearly 58,170 were assaulted in 2019 resulting in about 17,560 injuries.

Since the first recorded death in 1786, almost 22,000 officers have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty. This spring, 619 names of fallen heroes are being added to the National Law

Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., including 472 killed in 2021, of which 319 died from COVID-19, and 147 who died in previous years whose sacrifice had not been documented.

The Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial Association plans its annual candlelight vigil May 15, which is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, read the proclamation. Ramsey County Suburban Law Enforcement officers killed in the line of duty will be honored at a memorial ceremony on May 19.

Chief Julie Swanson thanked council for the proclamation, noting there hasn’t been an in-person vigil in two years to recognize those who died. “It’s important in our role as police officers to recognize

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

Vadnais Heights

• The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) Criminal Apprehension Team (CAT) on March 30 reported a suspicious vehicle fleeing into St. Paul that turned out to have displayed a license plate stolen from White Bear Lincoln dealership in the 3400 block of Highway 61.

• White Bear Lake Mitsubishi in the 3400 block of Highway 61 reported a motor vehicle stolen at 7:31 a.m.

March 31 after an employee started the vehicle with the key one minute earlier and left it running while he went to open the service gate.

But when he returned to move the vehicle, it was gone. The raid on dealerships in the 3400 block of Highway 61 continued, when White Bear Chrysler Jeep and Dodge reported motor vehicle theft upon receiving news that St. Paul police recovered both license plates of a 2017 Jeep Cherokee that, until the night before, had belonged to its fleet.

• A Roseville woman reported criminal damage to her vehicle April 1 after the passenger door window was broken in while it was parked in the Sucker Lake lot on County Road F for less than two hours. Nothing appeared to have been taken. A White Bear Lake man also reported criminal damage to his vehicle at Sucker Lake Park April 3 after returning to find the passenger door handle damaged in an attempt to unlock the vehicle.

• A Vadnais Heights man, 50, was arrested April 2 in the 1000 block of County Road D for assault after deputies were called out to the scene of a domestic during which the suspect made a threatening statement to a woman. He was also cited for domestic assault and disorderly conduct.

• A Blaine woman, 55, was cited for misdemeanor theft April 3 at the Walmart after loss prevention personnel observed her underringing items at the self-checkout and leaving the store with

those lost in the line of duty,” she said. “It’s a great way to show support for the officers.”

The chief plans to be in Washington, D.C. next month for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s 34th annual Candlelight Vigil. One of her sons is doing the 300-mile Police Unity Tour to raise awareness of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. The 2022 bicycle ride leaves New Jersey on May 9 and arrives in the nation’s capital May 12. The candlelight vigil is May 13 on the National Mall. Both of Swanson’s sons are Roseville police officers.

WHITE BEAR LAKE POLICE REPORTS

Shoplifting at Walmart became more aggressive after a White Bear Lake man, 38, was arrested for felony shoplifting and assault at 8:37 p.m. that day. He was observed breaking the lock on a display case and removing jewelry, which he concealed on his person. After he bypassed all points of sale, he grabbed and pushed loss prevention personnel in the vestibule before fleeing in a vehicle. Deputies found the vehicle parked and occupied by the suspect in White Bear Lake.

The shoplifting incidents continued with a 22-year-old White Bear Lake man and a 22-year-old Menomonie, Wisconsin, woman, who were both cited April 7 at the Walmart for misdemeanor theft following a report of suspicious activity. They were both “trespassed” from the premises. An Oakdale woman, 20, was also cited for misdemeanor theft April 9 after she was caught shoplifting.

• A suspicious person was reported for being seen under a vehicle and leaving on foot April 3 in the 900 block of County Road D. When deputies arrived on scene, they and the complainant discovered the front license plate missing from the vehicle.

White Bear Township

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen from a Hyundai Tucson during the April 5 workday when the vehicle was parked in the Bellaire Education Center lot. A catalytic converter was reported stolen during the April 6 workday from a Toyota Tundra parked in an employee lot in the 4100 block of White Bear Parkway. The RCSO has connected these two thefts with similar workday catalytic converter thefts from business lots occurring in Shoreview and Vadnais Heights.

The suspect vehicle in all cases is a tan 2003 Pontiac van with Montana plates.

• A Brooklyn Park man reported the catalytic converter stolen overnight April 6-7 from a Toyota Tundra parked in an employee lot in the 4400 block of Otter Lake Road.

• A fraud incident reported in the 3700 block of Linden Place April 8 resulted in the loss of over $40,000. The suspect is in another state.

• Officers responded to juvenile incidents in the 2700 block of County Road E, the intersection of County Road F and Bellaire Avenue, the 4800 block of White Bear Parkway, and the 5000 block of Division Avenue April 8.

• Disorderly conduct was reported in the 3900 block of Van Dyke Street April 8.

• Officers responded to disorderly individuals in the 2100 block of Fourth Street April 9.

• An enclosed construction trailer with tools inside was stolen in the 4900 block of Johnson Avenue April 9. It was recovered by St. Paul police the following day.

• A woman entered a store in the 900 block of Wildwood Road and left with baskets of merchandise without paying. She was identified by police but staff declined charges.

• Suspicious activity was reported in the 4700 block of Lake Avenue April 9.

• Officers responded to a noise disturbance in the 1500 block of Park Street April 9.

• Officers responded to a bar fight in the 2100 block of Fourth Street April 9. Disorderly conduct was reported in the same area on April 10.

• An order for protection violation was reported in the 3500 block of Century Avenue April 9.

• Officers responded to a report of two women arguing in a parking lot in the 3900 block of Hoffman Road April 10.

• A White Bear Lake man was arrested on an outstanding warrant in the 1800 block of Highway 96 April 10.

• Two males were reported March 24 for aggressive panhandling outside the gas station store on Stillwater Road. The complainant requested that the deputies “trespass” the males from the store, outside of which they had conducted their activities on a daily basis. Deputies were able to contact the father of one of the males for a chat about their activities.

• A Frankland Street resident on March 25 reported a woman for stealing items from his backpack after he was “arrested” by a retired police officer who had identified himself as a police officer on duty.

The complainant had given the backpack to the woman, who had been in his car, to take into his house before the “police” arrived on scene.

• A Forest Lake woman reported the catalytic converter cut off her car at 4:34 p.m. March 25 while she was at work in the 1000 block of Mahtomedi Avenue. Another catalytic converter theft on Warner Avenue S. was reported at 7:02 p.m. that day.

• Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) deputies received at least three complaints about construction debris in the middle of the roadway in the 7000 block of Jamaca Avenue N. March 23 and March 24. The public works department was advised of the wallboard, which they later found stacked on the shoulder of the road.

• The driver of a dark-colored SUV was cited March 23 in the area of 117th Street N. and Goodview Avenue N. for driving after revocation after deputies pulled him over for an obstructed rear license plate registration tab. A computer check showed the registration was expired, and the motorist admitted to intentionally covering up the tab to avoid being pulled over.

Furthermore, the motorist was driving a motor vehicle that didn’t belong to him.

• Deputies continued their sweep of vehicles displaying expired registration the following morning, March 24, as they pulled over motorists at 8:00 a.m., 8:37 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. in the 10000 block of 75th Street, the 8000 block of Manning Avenue and 7000 block of Lake Elmo Avenue N., respectively. The tabs had expired between July and October 2021.

• An unidentified motorist was pulled over for speeding 68 mph in a 55 mph zone at 12:40 p.m. March 24 in the 8000 block of Jamaca Avenue.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen overnight March 27-28 from the area of Wildwood Avenue and Birchwood Lane.

• Continuing their ongoing expired registration patrol and targeting a segment of 75th Street N., deputies conducted two traffic stops March 29 for the offense, one in the 8000 block and the other in the 11000 block. They pulled over two additional motorists in the early afternoon of March 30 at the same location for tabs that expired in December. One of those motorists was also in violation by failing to obtain a Minnesota driver’s license within 60 days of moving to the state. A fifth motorist was pulled over at midday April 1 for displaying tabs that expired last November.

• A suspicious male reported at 6:56 p.m. March 29 walking on the complainant’s property in the 9000 block of 65th Street N. turned out to be a man who was shed shopping and unaware he was on private property.

Best in state: Pederson is record-setting gymnastics champion

Best high school gymnast in Minnesota. That is the status earned by Lily Pederson, White Bear Lake sophomore, at the recent state meet for club gymnasts.

Pederson, 15, won all four events and set three state records in Level 10 at the Optional Minnesota State Championships at the Minneapolis Convention Center March 19.

“Lily is the best USA Gymnastics Level 10 in the state,” said Bart Roskoski, Flips co-coach, adding that Pederson is “one of the top five 2024 NCAA Division 1 recruits in the country.”

Virtually all NCAA gymnasts come from clubs, not high school teams, he noted. Club gymnasts compete year round and master higher-difficulty skills.

Pederson scored 9.925 on vault, executing a Yurchenko 1.5 twist, and 9.90 on uneven bars, flowing through a Weiler kip, Maloney pak, and “full-in” dismount.

Those were state meet record scores, as was her 39.00 points all-around.

“This has been the most amazing year,” said Pederson. “I have achieved so many goals already

this year, breaking 39, making it to the Nastia Cup, winning state.”

Pederson also won balance beam with 9.625 for a routine capped by a double back dismount, and floor exercise with 9.55 including a one-and-a-half step-out to a two-and-a-half front double twist.

“She is powerful, super powerful, and that’s what a lot of college coaches like,” assessed Lori Roskoski, the other Flips coach.

“She has a happy, smiling attitude. She loves to perform and it shows through. She is very-detail oriented. A perfectionist.”

The next two individuals were Addalye VanGrinsven (38.875) and Jade Lee (38.775), both of Twin City Twisters. Just over 1,000 gymnasts competed at all levels.

The White Bear Lake-based Flips captured the Level 10 team title for the first time. with a score 115.954, ending a long dynasty by the Twin City Twisters.

“By far the best part of this season was when the Flips level 10 team won state,” said Pederson, longtime member of the club.

“One of the best nights ever.”

second all-around.

Her bars and vault scores at state were personal bests but she actually scored higher at Nashville Nights in all-around (39.150), floor (9.775), and beam

(9.850). That was an invitational, one of seven on the Flips schedule, in early February.

“It is very, VERY hard to break 39,” Pederson said, “especially in Minnesota. A perfect 10 has never been given in Minnesota, as the scoring here is very tough compared to other states.”

Breaking 39 requires “going 4-for-4,” she said: averaging 9.75 per event, with no falls and hitting all routines. “I never thought I would do it once, much less twice.”

Next is a seven-state regional meet April 22, also held at Minneapolis Convention Center, where Pederson will try to qualify for Level 10 nationals for the fifth time. Nationals will be held in May in Arizona. Last year, Pederson placed third all-around at nationals with 38.3, including second on bars, fifth on beam and sixth on vault.

Pederson competed in the prestigious Nastia Liukin Cup in Fort Worth, Texas in February, which was televised live on the Olympic Channel. She placed 12th with 38.125.

Asked about her signature moves, Pederson explained that the Yurchenko 1.5 twist, with a “blind” landing, is one of the harder vaults to execute. “I’d

competed this vault a few times prior to this season, but never consistently. This year I competed the 1.5 at every meet. This (at state) was definitely one of my best vaults.”

On bars, the Weiler kip, she said, is a handstand followed by a “hop” to shift hands to a different position, then a drop to circle the low bar. That’s a new skill for her this year; the same as world champion Simone Biles does.

The Maloney pak means flinging backwards from the low bar to the high bar, then an immediate return to low bar, which she’s done for several years. The full-in dismount, with a flip then another rotation before landing, is one she added last year.

“I’ve been working on sticking the dismount all year, and finally stuck it at the state meet,” said Pederson, who relished an “awesome” reaction from her coaches and teammates.

Pederson, daughter of Cory and Monica, will start to hear from colleges this summer. Under NCAA rules, coaches have to wait until June 15 after the sophomore year. “My ultimate goal,” she said, “is to receive a full scholarship to a D1 school.”

Flips captures state gymnastics team crown The White Bear Lake-based Flips gymnastics club captured the team title, ending a dynasty by an arch rival, at the Optional Minnesota State Championships held at Minneapolis Convention Center March 19.

The Flips team scored 115.975, edging Twin City Twisters, which had 115.275, for first place among 13

teams in Level 10 (highest level). Twisters had won at least 15 straight titles, said Bart Roskoski, Flips cocoach with his wife, Lori.

The Flips Level 10 roster included Lily Pederson, Tatum Drusch and Rayna Engelmayer of White Bear Lake and Riley Schwietz of Mahtomedi. The

White Bear archery club has 2 state meet champs Tanner Carlson and Paige Andrle of the White Bear Lake High School archery club earned individual championships in a recent state meet, while the Bears placed third among 21 teams.

Carlson, a junior, scored 294 out of 300 to place first among 246 high school boys in the NASP Bulls-Eye State Tournament held March 25 in Duluth.

Andrle, a senior, scored 291 to place first among 272 girls.

Jennifer Grisler, who has coached the team along with Gunnar Carlson for five years, said these were their first state champions, and their first team to place in the top five.

“Focus, determination and pure talent,” said Grisler about the two champions, adding that it’s Andrle’s fifth year competing and Carlson’s first. “They listen to critique well and are able to process the advice that we as coaches give to them.”

Also among the top 60 boys were Jack Gabrielson, sixth with 287; Danny Boehm, 21st with 280; Brendan Hoden, 26th with 279; Tommy Cox, 49th with 274; and Atticus Shoultz, 60th with 271.

Also among the top 60 girls were Morgan Andrle, 25th with 280; and Brianna Berckes, 59th with 271.

A total of 30 White Bear Lake members competed. They had six tournaments in all.

The third-place finish qualified White Bear Lake for nationals May 12-14 in Louisville, KY. Seventeen team members, including the two champions, and their families committed to make the trip, Grisler said.

The MPCA staff is reviewing Water Gremlin’s application for a major amendment that would allow the company to convert some of its coaters from a solvent based coating system to a non-solvent based coating system, and to authorize installation of additional pollution control equipment at many sources in the facility. The draft permit amendment covers regulation of the entire the facility.

The MPCA will propose action on the major amendment application no later than May 17, 2022, through a separate public notification process. At that time, a copy of the public notice, the draft permit amendment, and technical support document will be available on the MPCA’s website.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) will host a public informational meeting for a draft air major amendment to Water Gremlin’s air emissions permit on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.

The meeting will run from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The MPCA is posting notice of this public meeting pursuant to Minn. R. 7001.1020. The meeting will be held at Century College’s East Campus Lincoln Mall and Room E2315. The map to the East Campus parking can be found at https:// www.century.edu/sites/default/files/Map_East-Campus-Parking.pdf, parking is free. The meeting will start at 6:00 p.m. in the Lincoln Mall with a one hour open house to allow for one-to-one conversations with MPCA staff on the environmental and public health topics of interest to the community related to the Water Gremlin facility. At 7:00 p.m., in nearby Room E2315, there will be a short presentation by MPCA about the draft air permit amendment followed by a question and answer session. The public meeting will be recorded for those who are not able to attend in person. Information about the meeting will also be posted on MPCA’s website at Public Notices | Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (state.mn.us).

Boys track: Bears win 8-team meet against SEC teams White Bear Lake won an eight-team meet of Suburban East Conference teams at home Tuesday, April 12. “Despite the cold it was a great meet for the Bears. We had a lot of personal bests,” said coach Tom Paulson.

Team scoring was White Bear Lake 112, Mounds View 96, Stillwater 91, Forest Lake 80, Roseville 52, Woodbury 41.5, Irondale 41.5, East Ridge 26.

Bears placing first were Eli Ebbert in 100 dash (11.09), Charlie Racine in 110 hurdles (15.13), Bennett Gilson in triple jump (42-10) and the throwers 4x100 relay with Imeleyo Stanton, Zach Pratt, Nick Svir, Tyler Long (49.43).

Ernest Mattson and Luke Williams placed 2-3 in the 3200. AJ Perron was second in 300 hurdles and third in high jump. In long jump, Seth Olson, Gavin Rogers and Gilson placed 2-3-4. Placing third were Ebbert in the 200, Nick Svir in shot and disc, and Vatel Henderson in triple jump.

The senior right-hander threw 5 1/3 innings, striking out 12 batters, allowing one hit and two walks. Noah Jacka got the last four outs for the save. The Bears’ run came in the sixth after Kaden Johnson lofted a double to left field. He took third on a ground out and scored on a throwing error after a grounder by Kyle Gibson.

The Bears lost to Stillwater 12-1 on Tuesday. Four Bear pitchers issued 11 walks, and two untimely errors led to eight unearned runs, Johnson and Jack Setterlund each had two hits.

Returning soldiers make up for lost time at Welcome Home Hunt

For a hunter, being stuck 7,000 miles away from your stomping grounds during hunting season is more than just a bummer. Add to that the absence of your family and life-threatening challenges of war, and you can imagine the experience of the local members of the Minnesota Army National Guard who were stationed overseas for the last year.

On March 19, 50 of those soldiers got a do-over of their missed hunting season through the Welcome Home Hunt, organized by the Hugo Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network (BTYRN) at the Wild Wings of Oneka hunt club.

BTYRN aims to support deployed soldiers and their families, sending care packages overseas, raising money and offering events such as the Welcome Home Hunt and monthly burger nights at the Hugo American Legion.

The hunt started in 2009, when chair Chuck Haas was commiserating with a friend that poor weather or some other circumstance prevented them from going out hunting that day. The conversation turned to the deployed members of the National Guard in Iraq, who had missed an entire hunting season for much different reasons.

“We decided this would be a way to share the gift of our great American hunting tradition with those soldiers who missed their hunting season while enabling us to enjoy ours,” Haas said.

The BYTRN partnered with Wild Wings of Oneka, and has since welcomed home every Minnesota National Guard unit from overseas deployment.

Several community organizations sponsored the event, where soldiers were provided with a hearty barbecue from Greater American Ribs as well as fully

dressed and cleaned birds to take home, courtesy of the Wild Wings guides.

“When they come back from deployment, they go through a series of reintegration events,” Haas said. “We say this is the best reintegration event they’ll ever go through.”

Capt. Bob Zellmann of the Minnesota Army National Guard’s 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 194th Armor Regiment (1-194), couldn’t agree more.

“The reintegration the Army puts us through is great, but it’s sitting in a classroom and listening and talking about feelings,” Zellmann said. “But to get out and get back with your buddies and do something fun that isn’t under the stress of being deployed—it’s nice to spend time as friends outside the Army.”

Zellmann’s unit was deployed to Afghanistan during the Taliban takeover in August 2021, where they aided in securing the Kabul International Airport while refugees frantically fled the country. The 1-194 was based in Kuwait but had been drilling emergency deployment for some time.

Zellmann found that his expertise as an engineer was needed immediately, as the airport had many weak points in need of creative barriers. There was ongoing construction, and Zellmann along with Staff Sgt. Alex Bodnar was able to analyze the available materials and restructure them into effective blocks.

“It was kind of surreal being in that scenario where we were the ones having to tell people they couldn’t get in when they thought they could,” Zellmann said.

“It was really tough, and I know a lot of people struggle with that emotionally. We knew at the same time we had a job to do and that the only way we were going to get people out of there was keeping the airfield free to get planes in and out.”

Security was of the utmost importance, as the threat of an IED or suicide bomb from terrorist organization ISIS-K was highly likely. One suicide bomber managed to detonate an explosive at one of the entry points, killing nearly 200 people who were trying to gain entry into the airport.

“You know you’re doing what you need to do to make the mission a success, but at the same time you feel for these people,” Zellmann said. “You put yourself in their shoes, and you can’t really blame them for trying to get in there any way possible.”

After two weeks defending the airport, 1-194 returned to Kuwait. Zellmann arrived home in February 2022 and currently resides with his family in White Bear Lake.

He expressed his appreciation for Hugo BTYRN both during and after deployment. He remembers seeing soldiers’ faces light up like kids on Christmas morning at the sight of the

snacks, candy, games and other goodies included in BTYRN care packages.

He has also enjoyed the BTYRN’s monthly burger nights with his family, not to mention the day of the hunt.

“For me as a hunter, missing last hunting season was pretty tough,” Zellmann said. “I basically had to live vicariously through my wife and friends as they hunted last year. It’s great to come back and within a month and a half to fill that void with a little bit of what we missed when we were gone.”

It means a lot to Zellmann to see the sponsors from the community step up and extend their gratitude for members of the military beyond simple words of thanks.

“When they make the effort to put together an event like this, it means that much more,” he said. “The group I was with really enjoyed it and we had a great time. I hope it continues for years to come. The whole Hugo Yellow Ribbon is outstanding.”

‘Devil May Care’ comes to Franconia

Brett Douglas Hunter doesn’t want you to take his art too seriously.

His latest exhibition, tentatively titled “Devil May Care,” which comes to Franconia Sculpture Park April 23, has just the right amount of whimsy for the serious world.

“It’s impulsive and weird,” laughs Hunter,

describing his art. The Nashville artist is all about having fun and going with the creative flow while making his signature creaturelike sculptures.

“I think we could all use a healthy dose of humor,” said Franconia Sculpture Park’s chief curator, Ginger Porcella. “I really appreciate humor and artwork. I think a lot of public art is sometimes way too serious.”

Porcella, whose family is also from Nashville, first found Hunter’s work through a friend’s Instagram feed and thought his playful sculptures would be a colorful addition to the park and durable enough for Minnesota’s winters.

Hunter, a self-taught artist, has a passion for the outsider art aesthetic.

“It’s like the farmer who makes stuff when he gets old, or the person who

doesn’t really fit in society but can’t help but make stuff,” said Hunter.

Though he’s known for his primary-colored creatures, his exhibition at Franconia will take a bit of a turn.

The exhibition will feature a number of wall hangings indoors in the Mardag Gallery, and Hunter’s larger papercrete statues will remain outdoors at the park until 2024.

“One of the outdoor sculptures is a ‘Truck Full of Grief,’ which doesn't sound very fun and playful like my other stuff, but it will still be kind of playful.

Hunter’s creatures will make an appearance indoors in the Mardag Gallery and as part of Franconia’s Open Studio Classes, where students of all ages can take a class and create their own creatures inspired by Hunter’s work.

Hunter won’t be a part

of the Open Studio classes.

He will, however, be at Franconia working on his sculptures through the month of April.

“I just think his work is so universal, and is going to appeal to people of all backgrounds and ages,” said Procella.

With trucks, colorful creatures and Hunter’s endless creativity on the docket, visitors to Franconia will leave appreciating the power of good humor.

If you've ventured north, you might have found yourself in the middle of a few good snowfalls. Warmer weather is forecasted for this time period but rain is expected to accompany it. Local area lakes are ice free.

Lois Connelly Hanson Lois Connelly Hanson, age 94, of Rochester, Minnesota, formerly of White Bear Lake, Minnesota passed away on April 6, 2022.

Born in Superior Wisconsin, Lois graduated from Superior Cathedral High School, attended the University of Wisconsin at Superior, and graduated from St. Mary’s School of X-Ray Technology. She served as an elementary school nurse’s aide in the White Bear Lake school system for 20 years. Lois was very active for many years in the White Bear Lake Silver Harmony Singers, White Bear Lake League of Woman Voters, and the St. Pius X Rosary Club.

She also volunteered for several years at the Gillette Children’s Hospital.

She is survived by her son, Steven Hanson (Candace) of Stockton, New Jersey and grandsons, Evan and Drew Hanson of Stockton, New Jersey; and by her son, Dr. Gregory Hanson (Dr. Michele Hanson) of Rochester, Minnesota, and grandchildren, Dr. Jay Hanson (Jennifer) of Austin, Texas, Dr. Tess Hanson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Kate Hanson (Sean) of Nashville, Tennessee, and great grandchild Alexandra Hanson of Austin, Texas; and by her niece, Susan McGlauchlin of Plymouth, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard (Barney) Hanson; parents, Theresa Sheehan Connelly Gleason and James Stephen Connelly; sister, Dorothy Connelly McGlauchlin; and nephew, Fr. Michael McGlauchlin.

A funeral mass will be scheduled later this spring or summer when people can safely assemble.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial contributions be made to Catholic Charities of Southern Minnesota.

Sally Moore Allen

Sally Moore Allen passed away on her own terms while surrounded by family and friends at home on April 4, 2022 after a 25-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Born and raised in St Paul, Sally and her family spent their summers in Dellwood. She was especially proud of her lifelong connection to White Bear Lake.

Sally graduated from Summit School and remained close to her classmates throughout her adult life.

After meeting Bill Allen at an appliance and record store in White Bear Lake, the two married in 1957.

In 1961 they purchased a newly built home on Floral Drive in White Bear Lake. There they raised their three children. After Bill’s passing in 1988, Sally stayed in their home until moving to senior housing in 2017. Realizing it was not a good fit, she began her search for a new place to call home. When she moved into the Arbors in White Bear Lake she knew she had found the right place.

Sally enjoyed volunteering, most notably serving as a board member and treasurer for the White Bear Lake Hockey and Skating Association in its early days. She was also a board member and president of the Miller Hospital Auxiliary, co-chairing a major fundraising campaign that was featured in the newspaper and on the television news.

Sally was an involved parent and grandparent. She was a fixture in the stands at countless hockey, football, basketball, baseball, softball and lacrosse games, as well as piano recitals and band concerts.

A woman of many talents, Sally always had a project or two in the works. An accomplished knitter, her needles were always near at hand. She continued

Sharon Jane (Mehl) Maeckelbergh Sharon Jane (Mehl) Maeckelbergh, 79, passed away on April 9th 2022 in Cotton, Minnesota. Sharon was born in Breckenridge, Minnesota on Jan. 27, 1943 to Edward and Alma Mehl.

She graduated from Breckenridge High School and attended college at St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota later graduating from St. Catherine’s in St. Paul, Minnesota with a degree in Biology. Sharon held jobs in a diverse set of industries working at Pearson’s Candy Company, Deluxe, Fannie May and Macy’s. Her ability to have a career, be a great mother, wonderful wife and maintain a wonderful home for her family has been an inspiration to her daughters and others in her life. Sharon and her husband Ken Maeckelbergh split their time between their homes in White Bear Lake, Minnesota and Cotton, Minnesota. Together they loved spending time outside on long walks, reading and traveling the world. Sharon was a talented baker with a green thumb and talented craftswoman. Sharon is survived by her husband Ken and her daughters Anne Finch and Michelle Tonkinson and her grandchildren; Zack Kurkowski, Luke Kurkowski, Jesse Tonkinson, Madison Tonkinson, Jordan Tonkinson, Ronald Finch, Bailey Finch and her adorable great granddaughter Magnolia Tonkinson. Sharon is also survived by her siblings Cindy Hoglund, Monica Eldien, Mike Mehl and Marica Williams. Sharon is preceded in death by her parents Edward and Alma Mehl and her brother Edward Mehl. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to American Heart Association www.heart.org. A private family ceremony will be held in celebration of life her life. to knit even as her eyesight was failing and had two projects on the needles when she passed. She was also a talented seamstress, cook and baker. She freely shared her time and talents, teaching family, friends and acquaintances how to knit, cook, and even how to swim.

A world traveler, Sally was particularly fond of Mexico, first visiting in 1985. After many trips to various locations, she lost her heart to Puerto Aventuras.

There she discovered a community of snowbirds and Mexicans that became her second family. She spent time there every winter beginning in 2001, with the exception of 2021 due to the pandemic. She was able to return for a short visit only weeks before she passed.

Sally’s heart, home and pool were always open to people of all ages. Sally made friends easily, “collecting “ people wherever she went. She loved to host parties and was known for her house and pool parties that were attended by people of all ages. There were always extra faces at the table, on the porch and around the pool in White Bear Lake and Mexico.

Sally was proud to be considered a second mom or surrogate Grammy or Abuela to many children and young people, maintaining many of these relationships for years.

Sally was preceded in death by her husband William “Bill;” parents James “Jim” and Alice Moore; brothers Albert “Dinty” and James “Jimmy”, and many beloved dogs and other pets.

She is survived by her children Jamie (Diane) and Randy (Angela) Allen, and Sara (Andy) Schmitt; grandchildren Lucas (Stacy), Nathan (Emily), Garrett (Lindsey), and Carly (Tommy); great grandchild Dexter, her grand dogs, and many close friends.

Memorial service on Friday, April 22, at Honsa Family Funeral Home, 2460 County Road E East, White Bear Lake at 11 a.m. Visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. Memorials preferred to Como Park Zoo & Conservatory, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Huntington’s Disease Society of America, or Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance.

James W. Smith James W. Smith passed into the arms of our Lord on April 6, 2022 at age 85 after a long illness. We are thankful for the excellent assisted care he received at Keystone Place senior care in Hugo and VA Memory Care at Estates of Roseville.

Health Partners provided exceptional hospice care for Jim and his family.

Jim was born on his grandfather’s farm in Onida, SD on Aug. 3, 1936.

His parents, Ira and Ruth (Mesick) Smith, moved their family to Highmore, SD. Jim spent his summers working for farmers. After graduation from high school, he served in the Marine Corp for 3 years during the Korean War. He continued his education at Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD with a major in social studies and psychology.

He received his masters of education degree from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 1984. Jim began his counseling career at the Minnesota State Services for the blind for 10 years and then at St. Paul College (TVI) for 25 years.

Jim married June (Walter) in 1964. They lived in Cottage Grove for 9 years and then built a new home in Hugo, MN where they lived for 45 years. June and Jim moved to independent living in White Bear Lake at the Arbors in 2017. He is preceded in death by his daughter Janelle, (Wilke), and sisters Rosa (Diede), Barbara (Geyer), and Tom Smith. Jim is survived by his brothers Henry and Marvin Smith, wife June and son Jeffrey Smith, 5 grandchildren, Taylor (Lapadat), Ben Wilke, Nate Wilke, Alaine (Szafranski), and Martin Smith and 3 great-grandchildren, Vincent Lapadat, Frank Lapadat and Clayton Szafranski. Three more Great-Grandchildren are on the way in the next 5 months. Jim loved to volunteer at the Hugo Food Shelf and the VA clinics in Maplewood, MN and Kerrville TX during his retirement. Memorials may go to First Presbyterian Church of White Bear Lake, MN.

Jane Frances (Wacker) Zophy Jane Zophy of Mahtomedi, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 10, 2022 from complications of breast cancer at the age of 62.

Jane grew up in New Brighton, Minnesota and graduated from Grace High School. After earning her degree in Elementary Education at the College of Saint Benedict, Jane taught third and fourth grades at Mississippi Creative Arts School in St. Paul for many years. While she was teaching, Jane earned a Master’s Degree in School Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Jane worked as a middle school guidance counselor in St. Paul, Stillwater and White Bear Lake.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles James and Genevieve Wacker, brother Patrick and infant twin sister Joan Frances. Jane is survived by her husband of 28 years, Greg Zophy and their daughter Claire Zophy. She is also survived by brothers John Walker (Mary Zelenak), Michael O’Sullivan (Catherine), Charles Wacker (Cindy) and sisters Mary Wacker, Anne Orchard (Joe Rogers), Joan Marie Orchard (Mark Buckrey) and many nieces and nephews.

Jane loved to travel and once spent a month touring Europe. She also enjoyed trips to Ireland, Florida, California, Banff National Park in Canada and especially loved hiking on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior. She also enjoyed long walks with her dogs, spending time with her friends and family and watching classic movies. She loved continuing education and was working on another degree at Hamline University at the time of her passing.

Jane will be dearly missed by her family and friends. A service in her memory will be held at Bradshaw Funeral Home, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd., Stillwater, Minnesota at 11 a.m. Thursday April 21 with Visitation one hour prior and luncheon to follow.

Patricia Lee Weaver (Nee Hartley), Age 87, Of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, passed away peacefully in her husband Ed’s arms on April 10, 2022.Patricia was born to Roy & Mary Belva Hartley on April 9, 1935.

She is preceded in death by her parents; twin brother, Paul Hartley; sister, Virginia Beaman; and brother, Lloyd. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 69 years, Edward Weaver; her children, Cynthia (Richard) Vehe, Loree (Richard) Weber, Scott (Nancy) Weaver, and Bryan Weaver; 10 Grandchildren; 11 Great Grandchildren; special niece, Kathy Beaman; and many nieces and nephews.

Pat was always a creative person and loved painting, crafting, gardening, rug hooking, making miniature dolls and doll houses and being a Florist. She owned and operated Tricia’s Trunk Floral in White Bear Lake for 14 years. She will be missed dearly by her husband Ed, her family and the many, many friends, whose lives she touched.

Yvonne was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, great-aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was born and raised in the Midway area of St. Paul, where she grew up in the St. Columba parish. She raised her four children on the East Side of St. Paul near Lake Phalen, and her life revolved around her family. She showed us the true meaning of strength to endure challenging times, as well as faith, hope, and love. She always looked for the good in people, and she always found it.

She was a devoted member of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish, sending all four children to Presentation of the BVM grade school and then Hill Murray High School. Thanks to both the Presentation and HM Pioneer communities for their support when she lost her husband Ronald Erickson to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) in 1973. She spent many years working as a secretary/administrative assistant at a variety of companies in the St. Paul area, and Yvonne most enjoyed working in the Hill Murray business office for several years in the 1970’s. She was a proud Pioneer parent and grandparent. She loved to read the daily St. Paul Pioneer Press throughout her life, and especially enjoyed reading the “Bulletin Board” section over the years. During her retirement years, she moved to White Bear Township to live with Carol and Dennis, where she was embraced by our White Bear community. She spent many Thursdays enjoying Marketfest!

Rosella Douglas Rosella Douglas passed away on Jan. 13, 2022 at the age of 89, at The Pillars Hospice, from ovarian cancer.

She was born on Feb. 1, 1932 in Herman, Minnesota to Herman & Minnie Zimmerman. She grew up on her families’ farm. In 1951 she earned a BA in Elementary Education from Moorhead State Teacher’s College. She taught in Atwater. In 1954 she married Lyle Johnson & had their only child Pamela, in 1960. Her family moved to White Bear in 1961.

She continued her education & earned a Bachelor of Science in Elem. Ed. from UM. She taught 1st grade at Parkview & Lakeaires Elementary in White Bear Lake until she retired in 1996. (In 1971 Lyle passed away from heart disease. She married Jim Douglas in 1976. (Jim passed away from cancer in 1990). Rosella enjoyed golfing, ballroom & polka dancing, traveling, going to her cabin in Wisconsin & volunteering at the Sr. Center. Evelyn “Lu” (Nee Eames) Warn Age 95. Passed away peacefully at home on April 13, 2022. Lu grew up in the DeKalb, Illinois area and graduated from Northern Illinois University with a BS in Education. She and her husband, Clayt, raised their 3 daughters in White Bear Lake. They retired to Alexandria, Minnesota, traveling the winter in their 5th-wheel trailer for 12 seasons. Upon the death of Clayt after almost 49 years of marriage, Lu moved to the Maplewood area where she lived for the next 24 years, surrounded by family and enjoying her return to Arlington Hills Lutheran Church. In addition to her husband, Lu was preceded in death by her parents, 4 brothers & 3 sisters. She is survived by a sister-in-law and many nieces, nephews, friends, & neighbors – most recently at The Shores of Lake Phalen Senior Living. She will be greatly missed by her daughters; Cheri (Jim) Steinmueller, Ruth (Ted) Schwarzrock, & Dodi (John) Roesler; her grandchildren: Matt (Angela) Steinmueller, Sara (Ben) Laine, Nick (Ali) Schwarzrock, Tim (Camille) Schwarzrock, Liz (John) Sims, Joe Roesler, & Mike (Ran Tao) Roesler; and her great grandchildren; Madeline, Morgan, & Maria Steinmueller – Mason & Archer Laine – Avery & Milton Schwarzrock – Rylan Roesler. Visitation at Anderson Funeral Home, St. Paul on Friday, April 22 from 5-8 p.m. and at Roseville Lutheran Church (1215 Roselawn Ave., Roseville, Minnesota) on Saturday, April 23 with a visitation 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 12:30 p.m. funeral service followed by graveside burial and a luncheon. Thanks to the “Friday Night Crew” at Kowalski’s White Bear Lake, where the staff treated Yvonne like family. Special thanks to our cashier Ally, as well as Becky “The-Sample-Lady” for taking such good care of her every week. We would also like to thank the “angels” at The Waters of White Bear Lake and the Sanctuary of West St. Paul for their care and compassion during her final years until her passing. Yvonne was a devoted Catholic who lived her faith. Above all, she loved and cared for her family and taught us the meaning of unconditional love. Our hearts are heavy missing her, and she has earned her wings. We love and miss our sweet, petite lady. She passed away peacefully on Monday, March 7, 2022 at the age of 90 years. Preceded in death by husband Ronald; son Craig; siblings Bernard Jr. “Bun”, Mark & Joan Wright/Woodburn; and treasured friend Gerald Cloutier. How to keep your pets safe and healthy this spring Warmer days lead to more outside fun for most pets and their owners, but springtime can also bring a host of health risks for your dog. Press Publications recently got in touch with local veterinarian Dr. Tim Kuhnmuench to learn about how to make the most of springtime and keep your pet safe and healthy this season.

Q. What should pet owners have on their radar now that we're getting into the spring season?

A. With spring season, we start to see more people and dogs out and about enjoying the warmer weather.

Just as you would ease back into exercise after taking some time off, be sure to ease your pet back into exercise if they have been more sedentary over the winter. Take frequent breaks and don’t push it too hard, too fast.

Warming weather can create risks for pets, even when it doesn’t seem overly hot outside. Never leave pets unattended in the car, even in the shade or with windows cracked.

Be sure that plants in your yard are pet-safe. One often overlooked plant are lilies: ingesting just one small bite of a leaf or petal can be deadly for pets, especially cats. Other common Minnesota plants that can be harmful include tulips, daffodils, oleander, onions, garlic and certain types of mushrooms. Store fertilizers and other chemicals away from pets’ reach.

Q. What do you recommend pet owners do to best prevent fleas and ticks when adventuring outside?

Dogs, and their humans, are itching to get outside more as temperatures warm up. Learn about how to keep your pet safe and healthy this season.

A. Minnesota has seen an exponential increase in the number of tick-borne diseases, most notably Lyme disease. Lyme disease is transmitted by the deer tick, and this tiny tick is very difficult to spot, especially in the coats of our furry family members. Proactive prevention is crucial to stopping this organism before it can transmit Lyme and other diseases. We recommend prescription-strength oral flea and tick preventives

that have proven track records of being very safe and efficacious.

There are also some relatively simple techniques that can create a lower tick burden in your yard: • Remove leaf and plant litter, tall grasses and brush around homes and at the edge of lawns once temperatures have been averaging above 50 degrees for one week.

• Place a 3-foot barrier of wood chips, rock or gravel for areas bordering wooded areas to discourage tick migration.

• Stack any firewood neatly in a dry area to discourage rodents (tick hosts).

• Remove any decaying playground sets, old furniture or trash in the yard that may give ticks a place to hide.

Q. Any advice for people who will be taking their dogs to outdoor spaces with more regularity now that things are warming up?

A. Be sure that they are up to date on all of their required vaccinations. This includes rabies and distemper. For dogs that frequent dog parks or doggie day care, grooming or boarding facilities, it is also recommended to consider Bordetella (kennel cough) and canine influenza (H3N2 and H3N8) vaccines. Other non-core vaccines that we see risk for in this area include: Lyme and Leptospirosis.
