Lions’ kitty finally sufficient to build new park

A trip to City Hall last week marked the final deposit in an escrow account set up by the White Bear Lake Lions Club for a new All Abilities Park at Lakewood Hills.

Lion Paul Kowitz said the club now has the financing to start site work for the park, which will provide an all-inclusive place where children can play regardless of physical ability or disability.

“The park,” he explained, “will provide a playground setting that any child can attend without being challenged.”

The White Bear club raised close to $500,000 for the playground, mostly from charitable gambling proceeds. Lions Club International Foundation contributed another $100,000.

Work couldn’t start on the site until sufficient funds were in the account. The equipment is in storage and ready to install.

The next step is to hire contractors to move dirt at the site. The city is handling logistics and will help with concrete work around the perimeter and footings. Fingers crossed, the park will see completion yet this year, but that could be a big ask with summer already starting, Kowitz said.

Actual construction will be done through a community effort, according to the Lion. Calling it a “community build,” Kowitz said the plan is for volunteers, including club members, to erect the 25x30 yard playground in assembly-line fashion with experts present to do the final

Back for 2022: Tour De Bar bicycle benefit Back and riding together again is the theme for the 34th annual Tour De Bar bicycle benefit.

Canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, this year’s Aug. 6 tour benefits Shelly Tripp, a White Bear Lake native who is battling an immune system disorder called hypersensitivity pneumonitis and pulmonary fibrosis.

Tripp’s diagnosis followed a bout with pneumonia in 2019. She had an intermittent

inflamed from an allergic reaction to inhaled substances. It causes shortness of breath, dry cough, fatigue, fever and chest tightness. She must depend on oxygen at all times. The disease has left Tripp unable to work.

The 2022 benefactor, a wife and mother of five with five grandchildren, said she tries to live life day by day and is grateful to friends and family for their support. She has a three- to five-year life expectancy.

As Tripp tells it, he insisted she immediately seek specialty care with a lung specialist. After many CT scans, blood tests and pulmonary function tests, she was referred to a thoracic surgeon. A lung biopsy led to the diagnosis of hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

The newest Foss Swim School location has opened in Vadnais Heights, in the Vadnais Square Shopping Center at 905 County Road E. The Vadnais Heights location features a 2,300 square foot pool, 10 on-deck showers, changing rooms, and seating for lesson viewing.

The Minnesota High School Rodeo Finals State Championship will be held Friday, June 10, Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12, at Dead Broke Arena, located at 5676 170th St., Hugo. Events will start at 7 p.m. June 10 and June 11 and at noon on June 12.

Join the White Bear Area Historical Society in commemorating the 100-year anniversary of the invention of water skiing in Minnesota with an upcoming exhibit and program.

Water skiing began when Ralph Samuelson created the first pair of water skis in Lake City, Minnesota.

“Bears on Boards: Waterskiing in White Bear” is an interactive exhibit that celebrates water skiing and White Bear’s connections to the sport. Deadly Deja Vu

“N

o Way To Prevent This, Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens” is a headline that the satirical news site The Onion has been posting (and reposting) since 2014. Normally, I wouldn’t choose to reference a news site primarily known for humor and satire when dealing with such a serious subject. However, the repeated postings of what is essentially the same headline and story with a few minor changes, seems to drive directly to the heart of the insanity of the seemingly endless cycle of mass shootings we are witnessing in this country.

Along with fellow staff members here Angle of at the Press, I’m part of a scheduled rotation of columns throughout the View year. Leading up to my turn I usually Paul Dols try to think of possible column topics.

I had chosen another topic and was hesitant to write about the latest mass shootings of innocent people, but ultimately decided that not addressing it would be avoiding a difficult and timely subject.

The choice of the editorial staff at The Onion to run the headline and story for the 21st time illustrates the predictable cycle of shock, mourning, media coverage, finger pointing, blame and calls for change that follow what are now, unfortunately, becoming commonplace events.

I can reference back to Press articles, including one in 2016 that refers back to another article that was published in 2013 following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Thoughts at the time included, “As starkly divided as our society and the current political landscape appears to be, one thing that I would sincerely hope everyone can agree on is that something must be done to stop the rampant slaughter of innocent people — in places they and members of their family had every reasonable expectation to believe were safe” and “If the murder of 20 children between the ages of 6 and 7 (innocent in every sense of the word) doesn’t create some positive change, what will?” Before I finished writing this column the sound of the unmistakable and joyous chatter of a large group of young students from a nearby school provided me with a universal and visceral life connection. As they made their way down the street to an ice cream shop during the final days of the school year, I found it almost impossible to reconcile the possibility of this burst of seasonal joy suddenly and inexplicably becoming intertwined with senseless tragedy.

In a recent New York Times article titled, “The Arrow in America’s Heart,” Elizabeth Dias references a Buddhist parable that describes a man who has been wounded by a poison arrow. The man insists on knowing various details about the arrow including who shot it, the kind of poison and what type of feathers are on the arrow. Missing the point that what is most important is removing the arrow and tending the wound, he dies. The Exploring Your Mind website further explains the meaning of the parable as a way of valuing life and prioritizing what is important before it’s too late.

After reading recently published statistics revealing the millions of dollars the National Rifle Association (NRA) lobby directs toward congress and the members who reap the most benefits, along with details about the gun manufacturer Daniel Defense’s marketing strategy directed toward teenagers, it becomes much clearer that these gunmen did not really act alone. There is complicity and there should be consequences.

It sometimes feels like the majority of us are being held hostage by an extreme minority of our society and members of congress. Because they can be complex and intertwined, statistics indicate that it can take several attempts to break free from a dysfunctional or abusive relationship. It may seem hopeless, but we have to keep trying to stop this heartbreaking cycle of violence.

Talking children’s summer activities with U of M

any young children do not get the amount of physical activity that they need to be healthy. As the summer months approach, Daheia Barr-Anderson, Ph.D., associate professor in the School of Kinesiology, shares her expertise on how to keep children physically active during the summer months.

Q: Why is it important for children to Daheia remain active in Barr-Anderson the summertime?

BarrAnderson: Regardless of the season, it is important for children to be physically active for the myriad physical, emotional, mental and psychological benefits that result from moving your body on a regular basis. However, in the summer when children may have less structured activities scheduled, it is imperative for parents to keep their children moving—whether with structured activities such as sports and sports camps or unstructured activities such as dedicated time at the local park or community pool. During the long days of summer—filled with sunshine but no seven-hour school day—some children may have lots of unstructured time that can easily be filled with sedentary screen time. Parents must be extra intentional to provide opportunities for their children to be active for at least an hour each day.

Q: How much daily activity is recommended for children?

Barr-Anderson: For children aged 3-5 years, the National Physical Activity Guidelines recommend preschoolers to move their bodies in structured and unstructured active play at all intensities (light, moderate and vigorous) for at least three hours per day. For this population, almost any and all movement counts towards the minimum recommendation. Guidelines for older children aged 6-17 are more specific. The goal is at least 60 minutes per day of moderate-tovigorous physical activity with most of that 60 minutes spent doing aerobic activities and on at least three of those days, it should include muscle- and bone-strengthening activities, such as running, jumping and skipping. Regardless of the age, it is imperative for children to engage in a variety of fun and ageand developmentally-appropriate activities.

Q: What are some good summertime activities both outdoors and indoors?

Barr-Anderson: Outdoor activities include:Playing at parks and playgrounds, biking, swimming, walking/running/ hiking, structured sports (softball, baseball, soccer, etc.), tennis, jumping rope, yoga (outdoor yoga during the summer is simply awesome!) and the list goes on. As long as you are moving your body in a fun and enjoyable manner in the sunshine, children are winning!

Children can beat the heat at indoor parks and playgrounds.

Depending on the space available at local community centers and indoor recreational centers, many of the outdoor activities listed above can be performed indoors — although biking might be a little challenging! If indoor space is limited to at home, physically active video games and dancing are viable options.

Q: How can parents and other caregivers support their children in physical activity?

Barr-Anderson: If it falls within the family budget, it can be easy for parents to outsource their children’s physical activity by enrolling them into various sports and summer camps and have skilled professionals (or zealous teenagers) oversee their children’s physical activity. However, this is not feasible for every family, so the most important support from parents and caregivers will be their sheer presence. Grab your children and be physically active with them. Go for a walk after dinner. Check out the local Salvation Army and online sales venues such as the Nextdoor app, Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace to locate inexpensive outdoor equipment such as bikes, bats and balls.

Road closure a necessary decision was passed to provide for a twohour window to open the barricade eastbound in the morning and westbound in the afternoon until the end of the school year. It passed unanimously. Residents and the city worked together to open the barricades during that time.

I think we all understand and are sympathetic to the impact this has on our neighbors. And while some commuters will undoubtedly continue to ignore the designated detour, it is THEIR behavior that violates the safety and serenity of our respective communities, not Birchwood residents or our council’s difficult but necessary decision.

These closures are a temporary inconvenience, with most of us making the best of a bad situation.

I’ve come enjoy my de-tour around the north side of White Bear Lake going to Stillwater, as well as my nearly daily bike ride or walk to Willernie for coffee or to go the library. We can all get through this if we accept a little inconvenience to protect pedestrian safety in all of our surrounding neighborhoods.

Elect leaders who will address gun violence problem I was both shocked and saddened when I saw these statistics.

The Gun Violence Archive shows that in 2021 there were more children killed by guns (1,560) than ALL the following combined; police line of duty (64), U.S. troops in combat (13), Americans killed by law enforcement (1,193). Our politicians spend hours on hearings for police reform, social justice, Afghanistan/Benghazi, etc., but hold virtually nothing on gun violence. After a mass shooting in 2019, when a rare hearing was held, a GOP Senator lamented, “Every time there’s a shooting, we play this ridiculous theater.”

In the most recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, there were 19 children killed. My dad is a combat vet and suffers PTSD from the horrors of war. He always said that if you want to really solve the gun violence issue, show people the actual images of what an automatic weapon does to the human body.

Is that how we need to get our politicians’ attention; by showing them the mangled bodies of these innocent children? I hope we are

not at that point.

Gun violence is a complicated issue, and gun safety should concern everyone. Just because we can’t solve the whole problem all at once doesn’t mean we shouldn’t hold our elected leaders accountable to enact legislation to start dealing with the problem. We all know it’s a small minority of elected leaders who are stopping any form of meaningful safety reforms. The majority of Americans want something to change! The only way things will be any different this time is to vote for leaders who have the courage to provide solutions and offer a better and safer way forward.

Spot mowing, spraying for weeds begins in Washington County

Washington County staff will be spot mowing and spraying for noxious weeds in the more than 220 miles of rural roadsides June 15 through July 30, and again in October.

This is being done to help comply with Minnesota’s Noxious Weed law administered by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Mowing will be used to prevent seed set and the following herbicides will be used to spray mowed area: Escort XP, Milestone VM and Liberate.

Property owners who do not want their roadside sprayed or mowed, and who are willing to take responsibility for controlling and eradicating noxious weeds on the adjacent roadside, may visit the Washington County North Shop at 11660 Myeron Road in Stillwater Township to obtain Do Not Spray signage, or call 651-430-4300. Be prepared to provide an address, the name of the nearest cross street and a description of where the signs will be located.

Garden Club are hosting a free class on pollinator gardening from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at Wildwood Library in Mahtomedi. Children age 10 and up are welcome with an adult. Help plant the library’s educational pollinator garden and get tips for creating bountiful habitat for butterflies and bees in your own backyard.

Into Nature: Plein Air Open House back for 2022

Local artists will be busy painting at various locations throughout the community as they compete in the White Bear Center for the Arts’ 2022 Into Nature: Plein Air Competition from June 1119. Celebrate the finished paintings at an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. June 19 at the WBCA. All are welcome to attend the free family-friendly event.

Plein air painting sessions offered at Shoreview parks

The a cappella quartet Vocality will once again perform a free concert on the porch of a Lake Avenue home. Community members are invited to attend on Saturday, July 16, from 3-4:30 p.m. at 4671 Lake Avenue.

Concert guests are asked to park on Banning Avenue and bring a lawn chair and beverages.

Vocality sings songs from the ’60s and ’70s, as well as a few newer numbers. The group will be joined by a guest quartet, Spice, which will perform between Vocality sets.

Enjoy a free, two-hour Plein Air painting class in one of Shoreview’s parks, thanks to a grant from the Shoreview Community Foundation. Classes will be taught by local painter Amy Clark. Plein air means to paint outdoors and see and capture what is in front of the artist. The full immersion into the landscape allows the artist’s senses to explore the natural setting and capture the nuances that come alive when they are present.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Birchwood “Barricade Brouhaha?” (White Bear Press, May 25) The Press’ tabloid coverage of this issue does a disservice to the residents of two communities who are grappling to understand what factors led to Birchwood making the difficult decision to close Cedar Street to through traffic.

The reporter fails to mention there is considerable support for the road closure in Birchwood as well as understanding from Mahtomedi residents. Had the writer attended either meeting, they would have heard thoughtful discussion of council and residents’ concerns for pedestrian safety and damage to our roadways from excessive, high-volume commuter and industrial traffic.

In its due diligence, the city consulted with Washington County transportation officials regarding different mitigation options to address the impact of the Hwy 244 closure was having in Birchwood.

After exploring the pros and cons, the county’s recommendation was full road closure, citing closure as the safest, most effective way to protect pedestrians and property.

At the second emergency meeting Sunday, concerns about delays in kids commuting to school were heard and addressed. A motion

A black bear was recently spotted lounging in a tree within 20 feet of the Lake Avenue Trail near the intersection of Lake Avenue and Clark Street. The bear seemed to be alternately napping and checking out the passerby on the trail.

largest food bank, is partnering with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Summer Food Service Program, to provide free food to those in need this summer.

Meal sites include schools, libraries and parks. Each meal site serves up to two meals per day, like breakfast and lunch, or a snack and dinner. Meals and snacks are available to children 18 years and under; there is no need to register before visiting, and no personal information or identification will be collected.

Partners in Policymaking accepting applications

A training course for people with disabilities and parents of young children with developmental disabilities is now taking applications. Partners in Policymaking is a free program that provides eight training sessions in disability law and policies over nine months. All expenses participants may incur will be reimbursed, thanks to a federal grant.

The Minnesota Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities introduced the Partners in Policymaking program in 1987. Through expansion to other states and countries, it has trained more than 27,000 people worldwide.

of aggression. About two hours before the Lake Avenue sighting, the WBLPD had received a report of a bear running through neighborhoods near White Bear Avenue and County Road E. It is unknown if the sightings were the same bear. The bear was reportedly out of the tree by mid-afternoon.

Birchwood

• A Five Oaks Lane resident at 11:16 p.m. May 12 reported people in the driveway pulling their pants down before leaving in a truck.

• Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies issued a written warning for speed May 13 in the 700 block of Hall Avenue during a directed patrol that started May 9 with the road closure on CSAH 12.

Dellwood

• A southbound motorist was issued a verbal warning for not wearing a seatbelt May 11 on Peninsula Road by northbound deputies.

The driver said he had forgotten to put it on.

• Bald eagles were reported at 6:14 p.m. May 13 on Lacosta Drive.

Grant

• An unidentified motorist was arrested for DWI at 5:19 a.m. May 8 in the 7000 block of Lake Elmo Avenue N. • A suspicious bone was reported found May 9 in the 6000 block of Jasmine Avenue N. that was thought to be human. No confirmation

had been reached at the time of the report.

• Deputies conducted a traffic stop May 11 in the 8000 block of 75th Street N. for hands-free cell phone violation.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen off a vehicle parked at Mahtomedi High School in the 8000 block of 75th Street N. May 11.

• A resident in the 8000 block of Dellwood Road Court N. on May 13 reported theft by family members who had violated the terms of a property agreement following the death of a parent. Deputies advised the complainant to seek counsel from an estate attorney.

• A suspicious vehicle reported at 9:59 p.m. May 13 in the 7000 block of Jocelyn Road N. turned out to be a male replacing a flat tire.

Mahtomedi

• Extra patrol was reported May 8 on Woodland Drive, after “out-of-control” juveniles from next door yelled obscenities and gave the complainant the finger.

• A chainsaw was reported at 11:59 p.m. May 9 on Bertha Court.

• A Shamrock Way resident on May 10 reported getting into an altercation with a neighbor who was speeding through the neighborhood.

• An unidentified male

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS was arrested on a felony warrant out of Ramsey County at 1:02 a.m. May 11 on Wildwood Beach Road after deputies responded to the report of a suspicious motorcycle.

The male was also found to be in possession of methamphetamines.

• A business in the 1000 block of Wildwood Road on May 11 reported a shoplifting in progress.

• A suspicious vehicle reported at 11:50 p.m. May 11 in the 3000 block of Century Avenue turned out to be a father giving a son driving lessons.

• An unknown motorist was cited May 13 in the 300 block of Old Wildwood Road for speeding 36 mph in a 20 mph zone.

• Motorists speeding in the area of Long Lake Road and Echo Lake Court were reported at 5:45 p.m. May 13.

Deputies assured the complainant that extra patrol would be performed.

Pine Springs

• A disturbance was reported at 12:43 a.m. May 8 in the 9000 block of Oakdale Drive.

Willernie

• An electrical hazard caused by a large tree falling on a power line in the area of Warwick Lane and Paddington Road was reported May 9.

White Bear Township campers killed after tree falls identified Two campers from White Bear Township who were killed by a falling tree in the Town of Lake in Price County, Wisconsin, have now been identified.

According to a press release released by the Price County Sheriff’s Office, a call came in at 5:43 p.m. Sunday, May 29, that a tree had fallen and struck two people who were seated at a picnic table near their campsite along the North Fork of the Flambeau River.

The campers were assisted by two people fishing the river nearby until emergency

services arrived. The fishermen reported they had noticed the wind pick up for about 10 minutes when they heard a tree fall along the north bank of the river.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, and a third person who was seated at the same picnic table was uninjured.

A fourth person at the campsite was also uninjured.

The victims have been identified as Sandy Michael Langseth II, 39, and April M. Sheldahl, 45.

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

Vadnais Heights

• Tousley Motor Sports in the 1400 block of County Road E reported two motorcycles stolen at 11:47 p.m. May 8 following a burglary, in which a glass door was broken for access. The vehicles were entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.

• A resident in the 3900 block of Stockdale Drive reported the catalytic converter stolen from her Kia Sportage while it was parked in the driveway overnight May 8-9.

• A St. Paul man, 59, was arrested May 9 in the 3500 block of Highway 61 for driving after cancellation and unsafe behavior, as well as on three gross misdemeanor warrants for those same offenses, after Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an animal complaint and to assist a fire agency with an overheating recreational vehicle. A border collie mix inside the vehicle was impounded.

• Multiple residents in the 3600 block of Talmage Circle on May 9 reported fraud and identity theft after the bank of one of the victims notified her that an adult male attempted to cash a stolen check using the victim’s identity. The bank teller spotted the fraud and called deputies, but the male left the area prior to deputies’ arrival. The checks had been stolen from the victim’s mailbox sometime after April 26, washed and written out for different amounts.

• The animal control officer was summoned out to the 700 block of Parkside Drive May 11 to investigate alleged poisoned treats left out for dogs.

• A Little Canada woman, 25, was cited May 11 at the Walmart in the 800 block of County Road E for misdemeanor theft and disorderly conduct after she was caught shoplifting $137.20 worth of items. A Roseville woman, 20, was cited for misdemeanor theft May 13 at the Walmart after she was stopped by loss prevention personnel for under-ringing $65.50 in merchandise at the self-checkout.

A White Bear Lake woman,

37, was also trespassed and cited for misdemeanor theft May 14 at the Walmart for under-ringing $70.56 worth of items at the self-checkout.

And, finally, a St. Paul man, 49, was cited May 14 for shoplifting after he was caught under-ringing $35.63 worth of items at the self-checkout.

• A Brooklyn Park man, 32, was arrested at 7:03 a.m. May 12 in the 600 block of Parkside Drive for domestic abuse no-contact order (DANCO) violation after deputies pulled the vehicle he was riding in over for running a stoplight at Arcade Street and Berwood Avenue. The driver had a revoked license, and her passenger had a DANCO prohibiting any contact with the woman he was seated next to in the vehicle. Both parties claimed not to know the conditions of the DANCO, which had been in effect since Dec. 29. The suspect has two prior qualified domestic violence-related convictions within the past 10 years.

• A St. Paul woman, 25, was arrested May 12 at the Walmart on outstanding warrants and for giving false information to police, after she was detained for shoplifting.

When store employees asked for her ID, the suspect pulled out a driver’s license belonging to another woman. Store personnel were having none of it, when the picture on the identification looked nothing like the woman.

• MGM Liquor Store in the 1000 block of Highway 96 on May 13 reported an attempted theft after they questioned the suspect, who then dropped bottles and threw other bottles at staff before fleeing the store with nothing.

• Juveniles riding bikes reported finding a wallet May 14 in the 1000 block of County Road E. When attempts to contact the owner were unsuccessful, deputies placed the wallet into property.

White Bear Township

• A Maplewood woman reported her son, 22, of North St. Paul, for taking her vehicle without permission as it was parked in the 4100 block of Glen Oaks Avenue May 13.

After the vehicle was entered into the NCIC, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office deputies recovered it in Brooklyn Park the next day.

Source of fuel leak couldn’t be traced Contrary to a continually circulating rumor, a fuel leak spotted in Commercial Bay more than two years ago could not be traced to its source.

At the time, that appeared to come from the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Boston Whaler docked at the VFW. There was also speculation it came from Tally’s Dockside.

Water Patrol Officer Sgt. Jeremy Bolen recalls that fall day. “I responded to that call,” he said. “A fuel stream worked its way through the docks and pooled near the sheriff’s boat at the VFW. White Bear fire, Hugo fire and

a hazmat unit responded. The fire chief made us pull out the boat and inspect it. There was no gas leak. It would be impossible for fuel to leak into the water from the sheriff’s boat.

It has a solid hull.” Bolen said the fire department used cotton mats to soak up the gas. He tried to follow the stream to other docks, but the fuel was dissipating and they couldn’t pinpoint from where the gas came.

In 2020, a lawsuit was filed by Docks of White Bear owner Brian McGoldrick, who hoped to stop his neighbor, Tally’s Dockside, from

dispensing fuel from a tank located on public right of way. A judge ruled that the tank’s location and its operation did not pose an imminent threat and allowed gas sales to continue.

An affidavit filed with the court from an individual who rented a slip from McGoldrick claimed he saw what he believed to be a “huge gasoline spill” near the two marinas the previous September. The only possible source for that much gasoline in the bay was Tally’s gas tank, he said.

Tally’s owner Keith Dehnert disputed the report in an affidavit of his own

a week later. In the filing, Dehnert attested that there was no spill or leak related to dispensing of gasoline on that day, adding the tank is electronically monitored for spills or leaks.

Dehnert noted that other sources of fuel spillage could be boaters or other marinas filling fuel tanks with gas cans. Bolen agreed, iterating that the leak could not be traced. “To say who it was, we couldn’t pinpoint it. We know it wasn’t our boat.”

Presentation: Strategic Actions Update Scott Thomas, director of educational services, and Dan Naidicz, assistant superintendent, presented an update on 916’s strategic actions. They focused on the high priority practices for 916 leaders which include Clarity, Authentic and Reciprocal Relationships, and Shared Leadership that centers student, staff, and family voice. They shared information on the creation of the Strategic Actions Advisory Committee and the many ways they are building alignment and coherence and providing professional support and development for the principal leadership teams. Lastly, they shared information on the equity work being done at the site and district levels.

Presentation: Review of Draft Equity Board Policy Shanaya Walker, DEI manager, and Kim Thebault, general counsel, shared the draft of the new Equity policy that 916 has created. They spoke about the process used to create the policy starting with identifying a framework, aligning with other districts equity policies, and the amount of feedback they received from various stakeholders, including the importance of student feedback. School Board Members were encouraged to share feedback and to take it to their own district leaders for feedback. This policy will be presented as a first reading at the June School Board meeting.

Presentation: First Reading of FY23 Budget Mark Kumlien, executive director of finance, presented the first reading of the proposed FY23 budget to the School Board. He also discussed the preliminary financial assumptions and steps taken to continue stabilization of the budget on both the revenue and expense sides.

Presentation: Dissemination of Superintendent Evaluation Tool School Board received a tool, in both written and electronic format, that they will use to evaluate the performance of Superintendent Boe. Board Members were asked to participate using either one of the formats by May 20. The results will be put together and the Board Chair will provide a summary of this evaluation at the August School Board meeting.

Superintendent’s Report Superintendent Boe commented on the following items that were included in her written report: (a) Member Highlight; (b) 916 Project Aware Grant Highlight; (c) Annual JPA Review; (d) Finance Team Highlight; (e) Special Education Highlight; and (f) Career and Tech Highlights.

Approval of the Consent Agenda Approved the consent items, accepted as part of the approval of the agenda, consistent with the recommended actions presented by the administration.

agreement reached with our teacher bargaining unit that will extend the instructional day by 7 minutes. This extension of the instructional day will reduce the total student days from 172 to 170 and will result in two additional non-student contact days for staff.

Approved the 2022-23 Basic School Calendar as revised and presented.

Resolution Relating to the Termination and Nonrenewal of the Teaching Contract of Probationary Teachers Terminated the teaching contract of the following probationary teachers at the end of the working day on June 30, 2022: Aida Abebe, Tami Bennett, Alexandra Gobell, Rebecca Juntunen, Abby Rouster, Katrina Silverdahl, and Kimberly Wakefield.

Final Revisions to FY22 Budget Preliminary Board approval was obtained in June 2021. Below is a motion to approve final revisions to the FY22 budget, said modifications reflecting changes in revenue (i.e., grants, revised tuition) and in expenditures (i.e., salary contract projections and settlements, grants) which have occurred after the June approval.

Approved the 2021-22 operating budget for Northeast Metropolitan Intermediate District 916 as attached.

Member Hockert shared that Stillwater has selected Dr. Michael Funk as the next Superintendent and will begin on July 1, 2022. He is currently the superintendent of Albert Lea Area Schools and was named 2022 Minnesota Superintendent of the Year.

The bicycle tour starts at 11 a.m. at Sak’s Sports Bar in Vadnais Heights and stops at 20 establishments around the lake. The last stop is an estimated 10 p.m. arrival at Rudy’s Redeye Grill (bicycle lights are required). You must be 21 to participate.

Raffle tickets will be sold at Sak’s for a chance to win a $400 bicycle, courtesy of Strauss Skates & Bicycle, and other prizes.

Co-chair Mike Shearen said three people nominated Tripp for this year’s tour. “They’re just the nicest people,” he added.

Shearen has been organizing the popular event since its sixth year.

Loon Chronicles VI: The miracle chick!

This year, we were at the right place at the right time to take in the hatch of the first chick. At 6:40 am, on June 1, 2022, we watched the chick peek out from under mama Loon’s wing, after working its way out of the egg. Within seconds, the chick crawled out from under the wing and plopped down next to its mother in the warm sun. Twenty minutes later, papa Loon arrived and started circling the nest, while exchanging quiet hoots with its mate. The chick scooted to the edge of the nest to check out the activity. Mama Loon was long overdue for a break from nest duty, and gracefully slid off the nest. Papa Loon circled the nest a few times, with his head in the water looking for fish, while the chick sat next to the remaining egg. After a few minutes, papa Loon approached the chick with his first fish delivery, which the chick snapped up on the first try. A few seconds later, papa

Loon crawled up onto the nest and started to turn the egg. The chick could not take its eyes off the egg. Once papa Loon was positioned on top of the egg, the chick made its way to the back of the nest and tried to look under papa Loons’ tail feathers to check on the egg.

We returned the next day, at the crack of dawn, hoping to witness the second hatch. The wind was blowing to beat the band and mama Loon worked hard to keep the chick under her wing and out of the wind. Papa Loon was MIA, and the wind continued to pick up, so we returned home. It was too windy to come back in the afternoon.

We returned the next morning, which was even windier than the day before, hoping to spot the second chick. Mama Loon was very protective and doing all she could to keep the chick from blowing off the nest. We spotted the egg still intact. A second hatch was not

in the cards. Later that day, the Eagles went after the Loon family with a vengeance. By late afternoon, the Loon family abandoned the nest and left the egg behind. We returned at sunset to find the chick sound asleep on mama Loon’s back, while papa Loon swam “sentry”. During the last two days, the chick has astounded us with its development. The Loon parents are keeping the chick close, while they make endless fish deliveries. The chick has started to dive, flap its wings, and swallow fish with ease. Like last year, the parents will be able to focus their energy on the one chick, which will increase its odds of survival. The fact that the chick has survived a hailstorm, gale force winds, and the Eagles, really makes it the “Miracle Chick.”

CAPITOL RECAP: Area Legislators Reflect On Session FROM PAGE 1

Phone: 651-296-1253 I had three top priorities for this year’s legislative session: education, crime and helping Minnesotans manage historic inflation and afford their daily lives.

Empowering parents and supporting teachers: Schools requested we keep it simple — literacy, special education and mental health funding, and no Sen. Roger Chamberlain mandates.

• Partnerships – the Senate passed simple bills that would promote stronger partnerships between parents and schools by creating a more transparent curriculum process.

• Literacy – Nearly 50% of kids in Minnesota are not reading at grade level. The schools supported our mandate-free $48.2 million literacy initiative.

• Special education – Schools requested support for special education funding. We listened.

The Senate passed record increases for special education funding from 6.5% to 40%, or $912 million over three years.

• Mental health – Finally, we increased funding by $15 million for the most challenging mental health issues.

Unfortunately, neither the House nor Gov. Walz accepted our repeated attempts at compromise.

Cutting taxes •

The Senate and House actually had an agreement on a broad range of tax relief to help seniors and working families, including fully eliminating the tax on Social Security benefits.

While there was an agreement, unfortunately Gov. Walz didn’t want to close the deal.

Keeping communities safe •

Supporting law enforcement – The Senate passed increased funding to recruit, retain and train more good cops to keep our neighborhoods safe.

• Tough on criminals – We also passed sentencing reform by strengthening penalties for certain crimes and requiring mandatory minimum sentences for others.

The Senate, House and Gov. Walz could not reach an agreement.

Vulnerable adults

•

The Senate focused on the crisis in long-term care and disabled communities. Our proposal invested $1 billion to stabilize and reform long-term care facilities and group homes.

Mental health •

The Senate, House and Gov. Walz did reach an agreement on addressing mental health.

The Governor signed a $93 million plan that addressed a variety of needs including extra beds and funding for greater mental health support in schools.

Keeping health insurance costs in check •

We passed legislation to extend a successful program that has stabilized the individual health insurance market and kept premium prices under control.

Unfortunately, much of this work went unfinished as we ran out of time to find a final agreement on tax cuts, a supplemental budget, or a final bonding bill. It’s disappointing that my colleagues in the Senate Republican Sen. Jason Isaacson majority, especially the chair of the education committee, refused to come to the table and work to find a compromise. We still have a chance to get this work done, but only if there is an agreement for a special session. I believe tax cuts and new funding for schools and seniors are too important to leave undone.

This is also the year for us to pass a job-creating bonding bill. I have been working to get much-needed funding for the Lake Johanna Fire Department headquarters which would serve Shoreview, Little Canada, and North Oaks. This is an urgent need for our area, and dozens of projects like this in communities across the state are at stake if we do not finish a bonding bill. We must come back and get it done.

We did get some good things done. One of the most important pieces was finishing the work from last year for our frontline workers. We passed legislation to provide bonuses of $750 or more to frontline workers who did not have the option to work from home during the pandemic and replenished Minnesota’s Unemployment Insurance Program while keeping businesses’ unemployment insurance tax rates flat.

I was also proud of the bipartisan commitment we made to mental health this year. I helped lead efforts with colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the House and Senate to deliver $92.7 million for mental health resources. This included funding for a bill I worked on to create mental health urgency rooms for youth experiencing mental health distress, as well as ongoing funding for mobile crisis units, school-linked mental health, and for shelter-linked mental health. It also included critical competency restoration provisions to support public safety and criminal justice.

Legislators did pass several new laws, but couldn’t reach a final agreement on many matters as time expired.

Last month, legislative leaders reached a major bipartisan agreement: a mix of tax cuts, targeted investments for schools, health and human services and more, plus a bonding bill and Sen. Chuck Wiger strengthening the state’s reserve account.

Final passage of the tax bill, which I support, was contingent on other conference committees negotiating details and reaching agreements.

Most of these committees made significant progress.

Some reached a final agreement or were close. I served on the education conference committee, where $1 billion was allocated, and an agreement seemed reachable. We now need to finish this work.

If we can, that will mean almost $4 billion in tax cuts (e.g., eliminate state taxation of Social Security,

and more); $4 billion in spending for education, health care, public safety; and a $1.5 billion bonding bill.

Minnesotans expect us to get this work done. I will continue to push for us to come back and do it.

The bonding bill could potentially include funding for White Bear Lake’s proposed public safety center, building maintenance projects at Century College, LakeLinks Trail appropriation technical change, Tubman Center, Gibbs Farm, and more. It’s important that we also pass legislation addressing water permits and additional study related to White Bear Lake.

Though that work remains, we did pass several initiatives: • •

• Veterans and Gold Star families provided various programs.

• Minnesota’s Unemployment Insurance Program was replenished while keeping businesses’ unemployment insurance tax rates flat.

• Reduced the cost of health insurance for Minnesotans who use the individual market.

• Funded nation-leading ALS research.

• Financial relief provided for farmers impacted by the 2021 drought.

The House DFL has fought for years to bring forth gun safety reforms supported by almost 90% of the public, like red flag Rep. Peter Fischer laws and universal background checks. Both of those bills passed the Minnesota House in 2020 but the Minnesota Senate refused to even discuss the issue.

We must do better for our children.

As required by the state constitution, the Legislature adjourned May 23. We moved forward on a long list of priorities for Minnesotans across the state, such as frontline worker bonus pay, investments to address the opioid crisis, and funding for Minnesota’s Unemployment Insurance Program to keep small businesses’ tax rates flat.

I am proud to say that in the Behavioral Health division that I chair, both parties worked together and passed every bill with unanimous support. This is the second year in a row this has occurred and illustrates the good work government is capable of. The House also passed a $92 million mental health package that lifts the moratorium on new mental health beds for the next five years, creates crisis ​​ homes for children, increases funding to programs that eliminate the barriers to mental health access, and more.

However, final agreements were not reached on our complete supplemental budget.

From the very beginning, I have been clear: my focus is on reducing costs for families, helping our young people, preserving our environment and improving public safety for everyone. The House DFL

negotiated for months in good faith with Gov. Walz and Senate leadership. We hope to continue working with Republicans to find as many agreements as possible, because that’s what Minnesotans deserve. I will continue advocating for our communities, and I hope to write again soon after a successful special session.

We advocated for investments in education, public safety, health care and other priorities.

Leaders from both parties agreed to invest $4 billion, provide $4 billion worth of tax cuts, and Rep. Ami Walzawik save $4 billion for the future. We passed several bills on a bipartisan basis, but important legislation was left on the table. I hope we can find a way to come together and complete our work. It’s what we agreed to do and what Minnesotans expect from their legislators.

While some bills didn’t make it across the finish line, we approved critical legislation this session. One of our notable accomplishments was delivering $500 million of bonus payments for frontline workers. This will

benefit hundreds of thousands of people who kept our state running during the pandemic, including health care workers, first responders, child care workers and food service and retail workers. We also replenished Minnesota’s Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund, which was depleted due to the pandemic.

Legislators secured additional resources for veterans this session. We provided funding to prevent veteran homelessness, build new veterans homes and deliver bonuses to those who served during the post-9/11 era.

We delivered relief to farmers impacted by the 2021 drought and took steps to contain avian influenza. In addition to supporting current farmers, we approved legislation to help more Minnesotans enter the agriculture industry, a critical part of our economy.

House DFLers also protected Minnesotans’ reproductive freedom. We blocked attempts to restrict reproductive rights and access to critical health care services.

Other notable accomplishments include reforming Minnesota’s liquor laws, expanding mental health resources, funding nation-leading ALS research and securing unprecedented amounts of money to address the opioid crisis.

The regular legislative session is over, but we’re still working hard and trying to find compromises. We want bipartisan bills to be ready in case a special session is called. I hope we can return to the Capitol and deliver the results Minnesotans deserve.

MAHTOMEDI SCHOOL BOARD NOTES

The Policy Committee presented eight policies to be approved with minor changes in language, as a result of Minnesota School Board Association updates due to the Maltreatment of Minors Act. Because the changes were insignificant, the Policy Committee recommended the board approve them at one meeting. The board unanimously approved the changes to Policies No. 206 ̶ Public Participation in School Board Meetings/Complaints About Person at School Board Meetings and Data Privacy Consideration; No. 211 ̶ Criminal or Civil Action Against School District, School Board Member, Employee, or Student; No. 414 ̶ Mandated Reporting of Child Neglect or Physical or Sexual Abuse; No. 423 ̶ Employee-Student Relationships; No. 519 ̶ Interviews of Students

by Outside Agencies; No. 532 ̶ Use of Peace Officers and Crisis Teams to Remove Students with IEP's from School Grounds; No. 605 ̶ Alternative Programs; and No. 609 – Religion.

The school district’s Calendar Committee uses a guideline document for composing changes to school year calendars. The document reviews reasons for changes (the “why”), parameters (the “how” and “how not”) and the desired results (the “what”).

Jennifer Reichel, director of teaching and learning, presented the 2023-2024 calendar schedule change document for board approval that incorporated minor changes recommended earlier by the board. The board unanimously approved this document with slight modification of the language.

The board conducted the first reading of 20 policies in the 200-cycle of policies after the Policy Committee, consisting of board members Stacey Stout, Lucy Payne and Paul Donna, conducted a regular review of the policies. The policy items may or may not have changes following the review. Members of the public

and the school board have two meeting opportunities to study the policies and provide input before these items come before the board for action. Policies with 200 catalog numbers pertain to the school board itself, such as meetings, officers, committees, order of the agenda, public hearings, student representation, operation, rules of order, compensation and so forth.

In her report, Superintendent Barb Duffrin highlighted activities around the district, such as the O.H. Anderson and Mahtomedi Middle School tours, young authors conference, Mahtomedi High School and Wildwood STEM collaboration, STEM expo and the Mahtomedi Adaptive Theater performance. The annual family survey is to be completed by May 21.

The secondary schedule redesign is planned for implementation during the 2023-24 school year. The Minnesota Legislature did not pass an E-12 supplemental budget bill in time for the May 23 deadline.

As Student Representative Toluwalase Akintola is about to graduate and approaches the end of her tenure on the board, Duffrin thanked her for her serious commitment to how she approached her role on the board. “She came prepared with insight to improve discussions and our decision-making,” Duffrin said.

“In every endeavor, she was seen by adults and peers as a leader and has a long history of excelling academically in and out of the classroom.” Akintola has been an invaluable voice in reminding adults of the importance of patience as students recover from the disruption of the past two years, Duffrin said as she presented Akintola with the school bell of service.

Akintola, who plans to attend university in Ohio next fall, said being on the school board presented her with the opportunity to remind herself of the importance of sharing other people's voices. “I hope I've shown the student voices and shared that perspective,” she said.

O.H. Anderson Principal Susan Prather recognized fourth grade students Hope Siegle, Ellie Pilkington, McKinley Drage and Alexandra Pawluk for their participation in the Helping Hands Project. For 20 days, the students collected personal care items, gift cards,

mittens, socks and hats for the St. Andrew's Resource Center and Good Neighbor Club of Mahtomedi and Willernie. The students exceeded their goal of collecting 735 items to donate.

The district will increase its mental health services to the middle school and high school, Tony Pierce, director of student support services, said in his wellness update. The update also noted that North Homes will provide mental health services at no cost to the district as long as it is a co-located provider. For the 2022-23 school year, four therapists and two practitioners are expected be on staff to serve more than the 144 students served during the 2021-22 school year.

The update also included topics for the gifted and talented socio-emotional learning groups in grades two through eight.

Meeting professional learning communities goals is valuable to student learning, said 87.5% of participants of the annual MCP/Q-Comp survey, said Jennifer Merthan, director of teaching and learning.

Q-Comp participants also voted 97-1 to continue with the program, the survey said. MCP/Q-Comp is a process used by the union and school board for teacher participation and evaluation, said Merthan, who is also a peer coach and MCP/Q-Comp coordinator for the district. State statute requires that each district's Q-Comp coordinator submit an annual report about the effectiveness of the program to their school board

by June 15. That report must be included in the program update submitted annually by Aug. 31 to the Minnesota Department of Education. Q-Comp added two peer coaches this past year to bring the total of four.

Water filter fundraiser underway for Ukraine White Bear Lake Rotarians and H2O for Life have teamed up to purchase water filters for the people of Ukraine.

Club member Patty Hall, who founded H2O for Life, is working with fellow Rotarian Irina Fursman to raise funds for the much-needed water filters. Donations purchase Sawyer filters for use in areas of Ukraine where clean water infrastructure has been destroyed.

Fursman moved to the United States in 2002 but spent the first half of her life in Russia, Crimea and Ukraine. She is founder of Global Synergy Group, a St. Louis Park-based nonprofit that works to strengthen communities and youth in Minnesota and Ukraine by facilitating civic engagement and leadership development.

White Bear nonprofit H2O for Life is lending its platform for the fundraiser.

Every $25 purchases two filters that provide up to 200 gallons of clean drinking water in 24 hours. All money raised goes toward purchase of filters.

“Funds are needed urgently to send filters to Ukraine,” Hall said. The Sawyer filters are well known to hikers and outdoors types. H2O has also worked with the company for projects it’s done in Africa. About 20,000 filters have been provided so far.

Filters are sent to distribution points in Poland, Romania and western Ukraine for distribution by local Rotary Clubs and volunteers on the ground in areas of need.

Gary P. Brandl Gary P. Brandl, 66, of Garrison, MN. passed away May 21, 2022 surrounded by Greg, Nan, and Cindy.

Gary Was a long-time resident of White Bear Lake, where he graduated with the class of 1973. He was a retired Teamster Foreman at Murphey Warehouse of Mpls. In retirement Gary moved to the family cabin on Sullivan Lake, of Hillman, MN . Gary enjoyed a life time of trap shooting and duck and goose hunting.

He started out as a trap boy at White Bear Rod and Gun Club, excelling at an early age at trap which lead to a lifetime of shooting sports. Gary was a former member of the Bald Eagle Sportsman Assc. of WBL and current member of Wealthwood Rod and Gun club, near Mille Lacs Lake. Through the years Gary enjoyed training and raising Yellow Labrador Retrievers for bird hunting and companionship. At the family Cabin on Sullivan, Gary would entertain many friends, family and neighbors with his labs skillful running leaps off the end of the dock to retrieve. 'Gar' had an impish grin, a mischievous and unforgettable way of teasing and giggling that commanded a lot of attention and laughter with his storytell in g. In his final years Gary found comfort and contentedness, with his special friend Cindy. They lived a stonesthrow from Mille Lacs Lake to which he loved.

He was preceded in death by parents Armand and Eleanor (Carpentier) Brandl.

Verkerke D-III national champ in 1500 meters

Sam Verkerke, former White Bear Lake athlete running for Wisconsin-Eau Claire, captured the Division III national championship in the 1,500 meters at Geneva, Ohio May 28, helping the Bluegolds win the team championship as well.

“I put myself in a position early on that would allow me to push through the leader and kick hard with 200 meters left,” said Verkerke, who ran fifth until making a move up to second with 600 meters to go, then surged into the lead with 250 meters left. He hit tape in 3:45.94 with the runner-up 1.8 seconds behind.

The lanky miler was confident. “I had either beaten everyone or had a better personal record. I don’t think anyone thought I’d win, but I felt I was the best racer in the field.”

A sophomore in school but a freshman in eligibility, Verkerke qualified for nationals when he won the WIAC (conference) title in 3:46.18 on May 6. This is the first year he’s made the mile his main event.

At White Bear Lake, Verkerke’s track highlight was placing fifth in the state with the 4x800 relay as a junior. He had no senior season due to the pandemic.

He helped the cross country team win the huge Griak Invitational and place seventh in the state meet his senior year. He played in the state hockey tournament as a junior, scoring nine goals that season.

Verkerke, a triplet, is one of four siblings in college sports. His sister, Maddie, runs for UM-Duluth; Sophia plays hockey at St. Scholastica in Duluth; and older sister Claudia plays hockey at Bemidji State.

ZEPHYRS SPORTS BRIEFS Mahtomedi girls win Section 4AA track, gain state in 9 events The Mahtomedi girls captured the Section 4AA track championship and had state qualifiers in nine events Wednesday and Friday at St. Anthony Village. Top three teams among 19 were Mahtomedi with 251.5, Breck 116.5, St. Anthony 112.

Individual champions are senior Anna Holst in the 200 dash (26.76), freshman Olivia Thiele in the 400 dash (1:00.02), junior Erin Steinman in triple jump (35-41/4) and junior Sarah Brings in the 3200 (12:08).

Qualifying with second-place finishes were freshman Gabby Fox in the 3200 (12:09) and seniors Cambelle Waldspurger, 800 (2:24.99); Makayla Fischer, 1600 (5:35.85); Nkobwa Ngunu, shot put (33-9), and Jackie Ong, long jump (16-7).

Zephyr relay wins came from the 4x100 with Ella Frazier, Madison Moeller, Zoie Centers and Anna Holst (50.58) and the 4x200 with Anna Moseley, Moeller, Centers and Holst (1:46.67).

Abbey Bush placed third in pole vault (8-4). Placing fourth were Breanna Elbers, 400 (1:02.64); and Brings, fourth, 1600 (5:39.74).

The Class 2A state meet is June 10-11 at St. Michael-Albertville.

Zephyr boys 2nd in section golf; Gabrio, Wilson reach state Mahtomedi placed second in the Section 4AAA boys golf tournament and had two state qualifiers Wednesday and Friday at Bunker Hills. Stillwater shot 623, Mahtomedi 632, and White Bear Lake 642 for the top three slots among 12 teams. Zephyr senior Daniel Gabrio shot 78-80-158 and freshman Jacob Wilson shot 82-76-158, tying for sixthbest overall score, both advancing to state. The Zephyrs also had freshman Riley McGrane with 77-82-159, freshman Thomas Meader with 79-82-161 and senior Carter Irvine with 78-84-162. The state Class 3A meet will be held June 14-15, also at Bunker Hills.

Prior to heading into the section tournament, the Zephyrs won the Metro East Conference meet with Wilson as medalist and four of the top eight players May 29 at Emerald Greens in Hastings.

Wilson shot a two-under-par 71, while Gabrio placed second with 74, Meader tied for fourth with 76 and McGrane tied for sixth with 77. All made all-conference. The Zephyrs won all of their three-team conference meets prior to the tournament.

Mahtomedi bats on fire in two section wins to reach finals Top-seeded Mahtomedi paraded 32 runs across the plate in their first two Section 4AAA games at home, advancing to the finals. The Zephyrs (17-4) will face the team that comes out of the losers bracket Thursday at 5 p.m. at Forest Lake. In a game with seven home runs with wind blowing 20 to 25 mph, the Zephyrs had four of them, including Kai Sather’s grand slam, in a 15-11 win over Hill-Murray Thursday.

Other round-trippers came from Ethan Felling (2-for-4, two RBI’s), Jordan Hull (3-for-4, two doubles, two runs, three RBIs), and Ethan Loss (2-for-4, three RBI’s). The Zephyrs routed North St. Paul 17-4 on Saturday, spraying 15 hits.

Seth Nelson was 3-for-4 (two doubles, RBI, three runs), Sam Garry 2-for-3 (two doubles, three RBIs), Hull 2-for-3 (two runs), Felling 2-for-3 (two RBI’s), and Loss 1-for-3 (triple, two RBI’s). In each game the Zephyrs used five pitchers. “Just trying to keep all the pitchers sharp,” coach Rob Garry explained.

Zephyrs boys lacrosse upset top seed, advance to section finals Mahtomedi advanced to the finals of the Section 4 tournament with victories over Hill-Murray 9-4 Wednesday and top-seeded Irondale 7-6 Friday. The No. 4 seeded Zephyrs (11-4) will duel No. 2 Stillwater (12-3) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Stillwater. Against Hill-Murray, Owen Knapp and Oskar Magnusson each tallied two goals and Jack Zell

made two assists. “Our focus was to control the middle of the field, and make it very difficult for Hill-Murray to clear the ball out of their zone,” coach Mike Narow said. Against Irondale, Zell delivered three goals, Magnusson two and Knapp one while the defenders were able to slow down three top Irondale scorers. The Zephyrs led by three in the fourth period and withstood an Irondale rally “thanks to some amazing goaltending by Caden Donahue,” the coach said.

Zephyr eighth-grader Lexi McGrane shot 84-83-167, third-best in the tournament, while seventh-grader Reagan Juhl shot 88-85-173, fifth-best, both advancing to the state meet.

Zephyr junior Maggie McCarty had 97-87-184, sophomore Sadie Stembridge 91-95-186 and senior Abbey Johnson 9494-188. The state Class 3A meet is June 14-15 at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.

Zephyr boys win section track title, reach state in 5 events The Mahtomedi boys track team captured the Section 4AA championship and had state entrants in five events Wednesday and Friday at St. Anthony Village. Top three teams among 10 were Mahtomedi with 171.5, Totino-Grace 139, and Fridley 130. This is the first year of a three-class system and Mahtomedi is in the middle.

Mahtomedi sophomore Jonah McCormick won both 110 high hurdles (15.61) and 300 hurdles (40.44), with senior Kole McKeown second in both (16.12 and 42.20).

Also qualifying with second-place finishes are junior Wyatt Siess in pole vault (10-0), senior Charlie Kramer in discus (140-7) and junior Emmett Poppelman in shot put (44-71/2).

The Zephyrs scored well in relays, with third place in the 4x400, third in the 4x800, fourth in the 4x200, and fifth in the 4x100, using 14 runners. Jon Nelson placed third in pole vault (9-6).

Cody Dvorak was third in discus (1407) and fifth in shot put (39-3). Placing fourth were Kramer, shot put (39-3); McKeown, triple jump (41-6); McCormick, fourth, high jump (6-0); and Jake Larson, long jump (21-51/2).

Stillwater won with 623, followed by Mahtomedi 632, White Bear Lake 642 for the top three among 12.

Stillwater had the top three shooters led by Tim Schultz with 152.

Jamieson, a junior, shot 84-74-158, tying for sixth-best overall. His 74 on Friday was a personal best and the low score for the day.

Camden O’Malley, a junior, shot 80-80-160 and missed advancing to state by one stroke. The Bears also had freshman Jack Stanius with 85-79164, sophomore Nolan Roed with 81-84-165, junior Will Peterson junior with 86-80-166, and senior Josh Hoover senior with 84-87-171.

“This was not the finish we were looking for,” said Craig Nasvik, who coaches both the boys and girls team, which also finished third. “Third is a good accomplishment, but both teams wanted to perform better. Both teams need to work in the off season so next year's finish can be better.”

The Bears had a final 11-4 record. Against Roseville, Preston West tallied four goals, Devin Mueller three, Finn Karni and Bryce Johnson two each, and Shea Raeburn, Evan Vickstrom and Trevor Hart one each. Hart made three assists and Brock Ollila made 10 saves.

White Bear Lake’s baseball season ended Thursday with a loss to Cretin-Derham Hall, 4-3, in the third round of Section 4AAAA. The Bears final record was 7-15. Gianna McLeod, senior, had the fourthbest score, 82-90-172, and Kristina Pratt, junior, tied for fifth-best with 88-88-175. Both advance to the state meet June 14-15 at Bunker Hills. McLeod sank a 30-foot putt for a birdie on No. 17 on Wednesday.

Lauren Schmidt, senior, placed ninth with 91-94-185, while sophomore Ivory Drusch shot 96-94-190 and freshman Sydney Pfeil 91-103-194.

Mattson placed second in the 3200 (9:33.88). Also advancing with second place was sophomore Luke Williams in the 1600 (4:29.95) behind Mattson.

After three knock-down, drag-out duels with their arch rivals, the White Bear Lake softball team is headed to the state tournament for the first time in 20 years.

The Bears squeezed past Stillwater 1-0 in the Section 4AAAA semifinals May 31. They clashed again in the finals June 2. The Bears lost to the Ponies 6-4 in nine innings, after coming within one out of a 2-1 win, then prevailed 6-5 in the rubber game, after leading 6-2.

“Four of our five games with Stillwater have been super close, always back and forth, with so many emotions flying around,” coach Kaity Wightman said. “I am so super proud of the girls for hanging in there.”

The Bears take a 21-3 record into the state Class 4A tournament Thursday and Friday at North Mankato. They were 3-2 against Stillwater (21-5), a five-time state champion, and ended the Ponies three-year reign in the section. Stillwater was ranked No. 2 and the Bears No. 4 in the last coaches poll.

“First time for us in 20 years,” said Bear senior Steph Larson, noting her school’s last state trip was 2002, before any of them were born. About the disappointment of losing the first game Thursday, she said, “We just looked at it as another game to play. To try to play well — and have fun playing.”

Ace hurlers Chloe Barber of the Bears and Kiera Murphy of Stillwater each showed fatigue from battling each other’s strong lineups for all 16 innings Thursday at McKnight Fields.

“She was gassed, but she was still bringing heat,” said Bear catcher Heidi Barber about her sister and battery mate. “The (umpire’s) strike zone was tight. And Stillwater has good hitters.”

Annika Olsen, second baseman, observed of her softball team, “We are exciting, entertaining, and interesting — and we always get the job done!

Last year, we were pretty good, and that was just a warm up.”

The Bears were 17-7 last year, ending a long string of losing seasons, but 0-3 against Stillwater. This year they turned the tables.

The Bears tied it when Heidi Barber blooped a double and scored on Jordyn Meyer’s two-out, line-drive single. But Stillwater got three in the ninth after two Barber walks, with RBI’s from Cat Smetena (single), Austin Coffey (squeeze bunt) and Taylor Gray (triple). Addie Bachmeier and Larson had RBI singles and Olsen a sac fly for the Bears. Barber struck out 12. She gave up 10 hits while walking five batters and hitting one.

Bears 6, Stillwater 5 The Bears took early leads of 5-1 and 6-2, mostly due to Stillwater miscues.

The Ponies made four errors, and Murphy gave up a bases-loaded walk and wild-pitched another run home.

Delivering RBI’s for the Bears were Maddy Belisle and Meyer on singles and Chloe Barber on a walk. Murphy snagged a line drive by Bachmeier to start a double play.

Stillwater chipped away with a tworun single by Gabby LaFavor with two out in the fifth, and three singles in the sixth leading to a bases-loaded walk from Barber, making it 6-5. A diving catch by Clara Griebel on the right-field line to start that inning prevented worse damage.

Stillwater had a runner on second in the seventh before Barber got the last two outs on little pop-ups caught by shortstop Meyer and the pitcher herself. “When that last ball was in the air, I thought, ‘That’s it! we did it! Going to state!” said Heidi Barber, who was 3-for-4.

Local Lutheran churches collaborate to offer Special Olympics program

St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Redeemer Lutheran Church, and Christ the King Church, all in White Bear Lake, are partnering to host a Special Olympics Young Athletes program on Thursday mornings throughout the summer.

SOYA is a free program for children ages 2-7 with

and without cognitive disabilities. The program begins June 16 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3770 Bellaire Avenue. Plans are to offer sessions quarterly throughout the year at different church sites.

St. Andrew’s celebrates 100th Anniversary

St. Andrews Lutheran Church will celebrate 100 years in the Mahtomedi community with a celebration June 26.

The event will begin with a worship service at 3 p.m. featuring reflections from Pastors Roger Eigenfeld, Michael Carlson, and Amy Mihelich; introduction of a choral composition by René Clausen; and a reception that includes traditional potluck appetizers from Scheel’s Catering.
