Like he does every year, aquatic ecologist Steve McComas surveyed White Bear Lake for invasive Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM).

The unwelcome weed was present, he said, but not at the highest levels he’s seen, or the lowest.

Tools for searching involve a rake, a depth finder and a good eye.

Once it’s found, McComas pinpoints the coordinates on a map for the lake management company that treats the milfoil with herbicide.

Typically, EWM is found at depths of 12 to 13 feet in White Bear Lake. “There might be some growth at 15 feet, but it never reaches the surface,” McComas said. “We don’t usually let it get within 4 feet of the surface for navigation and recreation purposes.”

The annual treatment program makes the water clear sailing for boaters. Sailors, especially, are aware of EWM, which can be a major drag on race day if left unchecked.

Such was the case when lake levels were low and sailboats couldn’t maneuver through the patches of milfoil.

Protecting lake elevation tall order for DNR

Long term, a protected elevation of 922 feet for White Bear Lake might be tough to maintain.

Department of Natural Resources managers shared predictions regarding elevation with members of the North and East Metro Groundwater Management Area advisory committee. The group was established nine years ago when the lake hit historic lows and the department was sued for allowing too much pumping from the aquifer under White Bear Lake.

“A lot has been done since then,” observed Jason Moeckel, DNR manager of inventory, monitoring and analysis section. “We’ve been poking and prodding on the technical side. The courts and Legislature have been poking and prodding on the statutory side. How do we deal with issues longterm, like water supply? What are the challenges?

There is uncertainty.”

down 3 to 4 feet and sunlight was getting through, that stuff was ripping,” said McComas, who owns St. Paul-based Blue Water Science. “We were treating 100 to 125 acres of EWM those years.”

The invasive specialist and his survey crew, which included Lake Conservation District board members Meredith Walburg and Mike Parenteau, collected about 350 EWM samples during their June 30 outing. McComas iterated that he’s finding patches he hasn’t seen before, but for the most part, he considers the annual program a success. “We’ve kept it at bay,” he asserted.

Results of the survey will be presented to the White Bear Lake Conservation District board at a future meeting. The district has been funding the EWM control program since 1988. As an aside, no evidence was found of another invasive, starry stonewort, but a second assessment will be made early August when the weed is more prominent.

Summer weather brings ticks, disease risk they are about the size of a poppy seed – they can carry as many diseases as the adults. They can be difficult to see or feel, so it is especially important to use insect repellent to keep them from biting.

Know when you are in tick habitat; this is when it is most important to take precautions: Wooded or brushy areas for the blacklegged tick.

Grassy or wooded areas for the American dog tick.

If you spend time outdoors in tick habitat, use repellent to lower the risk of disease: DEET-based repellents (up to 30 percent DEET) can be applied to clothing or skin.

Pre-treating fabric with permethrin-based repellents can protect against tick bites for at least two weeks without reapplication. This is an excellent option for people who frequently venture into wooded areas.

People who spend time at cabins on heavily wooded property often encounter ticks and should consider managing their landscape to reduce their risk. Consider the following strategies: Keep lawns and trails mowed short.

Remove leaves and brush.

Create a landscape barrier of wood chips or rocks between mowed lawns and woods.

Apply pesticide treatments in the spring or early summer along the edges of wooded yards and trails; follow pesticide label instructions carefully.

Early detection of tick-borne illness is important to prevent potentially severe complications.

Seek medical care if you develop symptoms that could be indicators of a tick-borne disease after spending time in tick habitat.

Signs and symptoms of the various tick-borne diseases can include, but are not limited to, rash, fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, and joint pain or swelling. These symptoms can be associated with other diseases, so it is important to mention possible tick exposures or time spent in tick habitat to your medical provider. Except for Powassan disease, which is caused by a virus, all of Minnesota’s tickborne diseases are treatable with antibiotics.

If your weekend plans include walks through wooded or brushy areas, make sure you pack the insect repellent – and use it – to ward off tick bites.

Health officials warn that blacklegged ticks (also known as deer ticks) like to hang out in many of the same places as Minnesotans this time of year. Using insect repellent and taking other precautions can help reduce your risk of getting one or more of several serious diseases carried by ticks.

Mid-May through mid-July is the period of highest risk for blacklegged ticks in Minnesota. Memorial Day weekend is often the first time of year when large numbers of Minnesota residents venture into tick habitat, those brushy or wooded areas of Southeastern, Central and North Central Minnesota. Recent field sampling by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) found that the immature blacklegged ticks (called nymphs) are out now and will likely become even more active in the next few weeks.

The blacklegged tick can spread Lyme disease, as well as anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, and Powassan disease. In 2014, 896 Lyme disease cases were reported in the state, along with 448 human anaplasmosis cases and 49 babesiosis cases. The number of cases of tick-transmitted diseases for previous years can be found on the MDH website.

American dog ticks (“wood ticks”), which are very common in spring and early summer throughout wooded or grassy areas of Minnesota, can also carry diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). While RMSF is most common in the southern United States, a small number of RMSF cases have occurred in Minnesotans who did not travel outside the state.

“Any of these diseases can make people very ill and can have serious complications, so it’s important to take steps to prevent them,” said David Neitzel, a tick-borne disease specialist with MDH. Though blacklegged tick nymphs are much smaller than adults –

Shop local for help with storm damage

R

ecent storms have brought about a flurry of yard signs in local neighborhoods for remodelers, roofers and painters. One local contractor I spoke with has inspected more than 700 homes recently.

The other day I noticed our neighbor had a someone up on his Publisher’s roof. It wasn’t a local company. I asked if he would take a look at View our roof, and he was happy to. He Carter Johnson indicated hail damage looked light on the garage, but he wasn’t able to get on our main roof. Curious about the extent of damage, I scheduled an appointment with a local roofing contractor. They came out and we walked over every square inch of the roof, looking at gutters, garage doors, and trim. He used a large piece of chalk to inspect the roof vent stacks and other elements, and took measurements of the thickness of the shingles, and walked me through what was considered hail damage and wind damage. He took a lot of photographs. Based on what they saw, they recommended I call our insurance company to make a claim. It was a good experience.

When I shared with the insurance adjuster what the first out-of-town contractor had said about our roof, he told me to beware of the strong-arm tactics of “storm chaser” roof companies. When I said I would only use a local roofer, he agreed that choosing a local company is the most important decision, as many non-local companies can do a good job but may not be around in 2 to 3 years if you have questions or concerns. Or, they change the name of the company to avoid liability. Other recommendations he shared were to never sign up with a contractor who knocks on your door, and at the time you are ready to choose a contractor, make sure you see a copy of their Minnesota license and check their track record by contacting multiple local past customers for references. Also be sure to choose a contractor or company that works in the area year-round.

Now we are preparing for our next steps. The claim has been approved and we have two years to complete the work. It’s nice not to feel rushed, since contractors are backed up with jobs, and pricing of materials may be inflated right now.

Other things to consider in a new roof project include adding extra ice and water shield to known problem areas; adding insulation to attic or crawlspaces to prevent ice dams; and using a high-quality gutter with leaf and debris protection to prevent gutters from becoming clogged and overflowing, which caused water in basements or erodes soil around the home’s foundation. Local roofers will often recommend a specific style of roof vents due to the abundance of Cottonwood tree seeds and other things nature throws at us that can cause vents to become plugged. One roofer I spoke with recommended adding vents for proper air flow in the attic.

I’m also considering whether a hail proof shingle or steel roof will reduce our insurance premium, as well as help prevent asphalt shingles from being dumped in our landfills. Standing seam steel roofs have a long life but are more expensive and can still show dents from hail. If you go that route, be aware of city and township codes, as some have ordinances against steel roofs. I was hoping some of the solar shingle technology might be an option, but I don’t think it is in in our market yet.

Talking monkeypox with the U of M

onkeypox has been appearing in the news more and more Movers & frequently, which poses Shakers the question for many of us Beth Thielen — what exactly is it?

Beth Thielen, M.D., Ph.D., with the University of Minnesota Medical School and M Health Fairview, talks about what monkeypox is and how to take preventative measures against it.

Q: What is monkeypox?

Thielen: Monkeypox is a rare viral disease that was historically linked with living or traveling in West and Central Africa or contact with animals from this area. The current outbreak is different because cases are being detected in many countries that do not usually have monkeypox. Most of these have been in Europe, but more than 170 cases have been identified in the U.S. The disease causes a mild illness that resolves without specific treatment in most people, but there is a higher risk of severe disease or complications in people who are immunocompromised, pregnant or very young.

Q: How is monkeypox transferred between people?

Thielen: The virus, which

originated in animals, can be transmitted from person to person by contact with lesions, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as clothing and bedding. With this recent outbreak, there has been particular concern about the virus being spread by sexual contact.

Q: What are the symptoms of monkeypox?

Thielen: The main symptom of monkeypox is a new rash.

The rash typically starts as flat red spots on the skin. Over a few days to a week, the rash progresses to raised bumps and then blisters, first filled with clear fluid and then pus.

It can be quite painful. They may occur anywhere on the body, but with the current outbreak the rash has often begun in mucosal areas such as the mouth or genital area. It may remain limited to a specific body site or spread all over. We used to think that most people with the infection developed systemic symptoms such as fever, malaise and swollen lymph nodes, but these symptoms are less common with the current outbreak.

Q: What steps can someone take to prevent monkeypox?

Thielen: The smallpox vaccine has been shown to protect against monkeypox, but the vaccine itself can have serious side effects, particularly among the same people at highest risk from monkeypox — immunocompromised and pregnant people. For that reason, the decision about vaccination should be made

on a case-by-case basis after carefully weighing the risks of exposure to the disease. You can help keep yourself and your community healthy by taking precautions that reduce the spread of many infections, not just monkeypox: stay home if you are sick, wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing, wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer frequently and avoid highrisk sexual exposures such as meeting anonymous partners through websites or apps.

Q: What should I do if I think I might have monkeypox?

Thielen: So far, the number of cases in the United States is quite small, and the first cases in Minnesota have been recently diagnosed.

However, it is still important to be vigilant for signs and to contact your healthcare provider if you develop symptoms. Consult a healthcare provider for evaluation and possible testing if you develop a new rash, particularly if you have been around someone who might have monkeypox. Other diseases like chickenpox, herpes and syphilis can cause rashes that look similar, so testing is important to make sure you get the right treatment.

I would like to thank you, Carter Johnson, for leading the 15th Annual Classic & Vintage Boat Show June 25. You and your team, led by Ashley Thoma, Mike Parenteau, Mark Sather, and Nick Temali, continued a White Bear Lake tradition started by Pat Oven 17 years ago. White Bear Lake offers so much history including incredible boat history. This boat show is an outstanding Manitou Days Event. Our town is vibrant because of the support and efforts of our businesses and community volunteers. Thank you White Bear Press, for your leadership, dedication, and effort. Response to letter

Government/civics teachers must be disappointed in Mr. Kessel’s arrogant and scolding letter (“Civics Lessons Needed” June 29 White Bear Press), filled with misinformation and displaying a shallow understanding of the Constitution.

He either is unaware of the solid Constitutional basis for Roe v Wade, or chose not to address the merits of that decision. If the latter, it’s an attempt to perpetuate the false narrative spread by manipulative Trump-like white ultra-conservative Christian zealots who, remarkably, can’t get it in their heads that our nation was founded on the principle of separation of church and state.

Maybe Mr. Kessel stopped reading after getting to the 10th Amendment. Those who continued are aware of the clear language in the 14th Amendment that supports Federal authority to control abortion laws. The 1973 Supreme Court (how dare he disparage those dedicated and non-partisan Justices!), in a 7-2 decision, found that a woman’s right to an abortion was implicit in the “right to privacy” protected under the 14th Amendment.

The 14th Amendment states that “no State shall make or enforce the privileges or immunities of citizens… nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property…nor deny to any person…the equal protection of the laws.”

Now, due to this current court’s misguided decision, the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of the right to privacy and equal protection is being stomped on by dozens of regressive and, frankly, scary state legislatures and governors.

It’s no coincidence that federal power over abortion, in place for 50 years, is suddenly removed by a court with 3 members - appointed by Trump - with unabashedly partisan bias and who misled U.S. Senators in their nomination hearings.

Mr. Kessel, we absolutely understand what has happened, and we are very much upset, not over abortion rights in Minnesota, but for all those women in backwards states who lost their Constitutional rights to privacy and equal protection, and now risk their lives and/or arrest if they attempt a procedure that women in neighboring states can access without risk.

PAID LETTER Vote to protect access to healthcare On June 24 the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and took away the constitutional right for women to control their own bodies. Several states have trigger laws in place, resulting in immediate bans on abortion in some states and additional bans in the near future. Other states without trigger laws are expected to ban abortion in the coming weeks and months. Losing reproductive freedom means women lose the ability to chart their own course and puts their health, and lives, at risk. Serious complications regularly arise during pregnancy. Conditions like ectopic pregnancies and partial miscarriage can put a woman’s life at risk without swift medical attention.

While women in Minnesota continue to have access to reproductive health care that includes abortion, that could change in the future. Republican candidates for office have said that they will ban abortion, and a Texas-style abortion ban was introduced in the Minnesota House this past session. If we want to ensure access to the full spectrum of reproductive healthcare, including abortion, for current and future generations of Minnesotans, we must elect individuals who will protect reproductive rights. Susie Strom, who is running for the Minnesota House in District 36A, will do just that. While her opponent was celebrating the overturning of Roe v. Wade on social media, Susie vowed to sign onto the Protecting Reproductive Options Act, which will preserve safe and legal access to abortion in our state. She understands the importance of protecting our freedoms, including women’s access to safe reproductive healthcare, and I am proud to support her.

I’m Heather Gustafson; I’m a mom, history teacher and volunteer. For 12 years I’ve raised my four daughters in the quiet Vadnais Heights neighborhood we call home. As a softball mom, a member of St. Joe’s in Lino Lakes and a former Centennial High School teacher, I have a strong connection and love for this community and a calling to give back to the place that has given me and my family so much.

I’m also running for state senate. Growing up in a small town in central Minnesota, that’s not something I ever thought I’d do. Like you, I’ve watched growing polarization divide our state and our nation.

At the same time, I’ve been inspired by the underlying Minnesota values of hard work, lending a hand to a neighbor in need and working together towards common goals — values that defined us as Minnesotans for generations.

I’ve knocked on hundreds of doors and talked with people from every point on the political spectrum, and the overwhelming message I’m hearing is that people want leaders who will work together to get things done. We’re tired of fighting and the loud voices of extremism. We want effective leaders who understand the real problems facing Minnesota and who are ready to get to work.

Our current senator has been in office for more than a decade, and while I appreciate his service, it’s clear our community is ready to shift direction from dangerous misinformation and party line purists who ignore the challenges families are facing now. They need relief from rising costs, great schools where our kids can learn and thrive, safe neighborhoods, and

good paying jobs.

I may not have all the answers to the challenges we face, but I promise I will listen to every good idea, no matter where it originates and when elected, will do everything in my power to advance real solutions that will keep our community a great place to live, work and raise a family.

PAID LETTER Education funding part of political agenda After reading all the paid-for attacks on state Sen. Roger Chamberlain, I wanted to enlighten everyone to the facts about what happened in the 2022 legislative session.

Here are the facts: Sen. Chamberlain fully supported the school’s position, the democrats didn’t.

Sen. Chamberlain’s proposal was simple: no new mandates, $58 million for free literacy initiative, $15 million for mental health grants, $920 million for special education – an increase from 6.4% funding to 40% funding. Sen. Chamberlain listened, put politics aside and offered what the schools asked for. In typical fashion, the democrat-funded union, and Gov. Tim Walz, walked away.

The teachers’ union also supported lockdowns, remote "learning", masking children and keeping schools closed, so their members could work remote.

The damage done to a whole generation of children will reverberate for decades. Three school years have been obfuscated by bad policies supported by Education Minnesota and Tim Walz. So, when they start school this fall and your fifth-grade child is doing third- and fourth-grade curriculum review, don't be surprised.

As a result of the selfish political agenda driven and funded by the teachers’ union, and carried out by Minnesota Democrat leaders, we lost many amazing teachers and over 23,000 students. Parents are homeschooling their kids at all-time record numbers, while public school academics seem to be falling behind the ideological indoctrination of anti-American rhetoric, supported by Education Minnesota.

I encourage all to look deeper at Education Minnesota as they are just an arm of the DFL that is funded by your tax dollars. Let’s not get it twisted, these are the people responsible for walking away from Sen. Chamberlain’s proposal.

Vadnais Heights

• A Vadnais Heights man, 30, was arrested June 1 in the 800 block of County Road D for violating a Domestic Abuse No Contact Order (DANCO).

• A harassment victim completed a citizen arrest form June 1 in the 300 block of Meadowood Lane and submitted it to the city attorney for consideration of charges.

• A Minneapolis woman, 37, was arrested June 1 at the Walmart on an outstanding gross misdemeanor warrant and charged anew with gross misdemeanor theft, after she and a girl left the store pushing two carts filled with $516.93 in merchandise. Deputies stopped the females in the parking lot and escorted them to the loss prevention office. The juvenile female was released to an adult on scene. The case has been forwarded to the investigator for charging.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS • A resident in the 4200 block of Thornhill Lane on June 2 reported a burglary, after she arrived home to find a deck gate open, back porch screens opened and a door unlocked. A search determined that an envelope kept in a jewelry box was missing.

• A Vadnais Heights man, 21, was mailed a citation for theft, after he stole his ex-girlfriend's phone June 3 and smashed it on a sidewalk in the 900 block of County Road E .

White Bear Township

• A report of suspicious shots fired and accompanied by loud, violent language at 10:03 a.m.

May 31 in the 2200 block of 5th Court while the complainant was on the phone and concerned about the safety of persons at the address turned out to be TV background noise either from the other end of the phone or at her own address.

June 7, following a 9:12 a.m. report of a male knocking over barricade signs at Hall Avenue and Jay Street.

• A suspicious vehicle entering a construction site in the area of Manning Avenue N. and 60th Street N. at 8:04 p.m. June 5 turned out to be a crane operator dumping yard material.

• A resident in the 9000 block of 107th Street on June 7 reported being victim of the asphalt scam. Another resident in the 9000 block of Ivy Avenue N. reported a civil issue between himself and an asphalt company doing work at his residence.

Washington Coun-

ty Sheriff's Office deputies advised the complainant on his options. The asphalt scam currently sweeping the country involves door knockers offering asphalt work for unbelievably low fees if all the money is paid up front. The asphalt company either fails to work on the driveway at all or performs shoddy work, while the victim loses as much as $20,000.

• A motorist was cited June 5 in the 400 block of Wildwood Road for barricade violation.

• A resident in the 1000 block of Griffin Avenue on June 7 reported purchasing a pickup-truck from an impound yard and finding a gun stolen out of Texas inside.

• An erratic driver spotted by deputies at 2:32 a.m. June 9 in the area of Long Lake Road and Berwick Lane N. turned out to be an Uber driver transporting a customer who gave him the wrong address.

• A Long Lake Road resident at 12:48 a.m.

June 11 reported a stolen license plate.

Willernie

• A Kimberley Road resident on June 6 reported property damage connected to a neighbor dispute.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEF A 23-year-old Hugo man was hospitalized and needed to undergo surgery after being shot while at a movie theater.

On June 28 at approximately 10:04 p.m., Oakdale Police were summoned to Marcus Cinema, located at 5667 Hadley Ave. N, on a report of a shooting. According to Oakdale Police, the suspect was reported to have fled the theater on foot, and the shooting does not appear to be random.

The Hugo man was found in theater 17 with suspected gunshot wounds and subsequently transported to Regions Hospital for treatment. The man

underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.

As of press time, no arrests had been made. The incident is under investigation by the Oakdale Police Department with assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and surrounding agencies. Loon Chronicles VII: Happy Fourth of July!

The chick is now four weeks old and becoming more independent every day. During our early morning outings, we can usually spot the chick asleep near one or both parents. The chick has outgrown her mama’s back and has learned how to sleep in the water. Papa Loon is usually the first to leave, often to join a few other adult Loons that have become regular morning visitors. Once the chick is awake, Mama Loon often will leave it alone near the bulrushes, to join the other adult Loons. The parents continue to entrust us with their chick. We are happy to report that the chick has become quite the diver and can stay under for several seconds, making us guess where it will pop up next. The chick has been working on her

wing flaps and can now open and pump its wings, sans forward movement. The chick also has mastered foot waggles and appears content foraging for bits of weeds and tiny fish, on its own. The chick is making some progress with its calls. One morning, we watched the Loon parents and another pair of Loons become unhinged as a group of racing canoes tried to make their way near the bulrushes.

Two Loons started wing-rowing in circles and headed for the canoes.

The other two started calling hysterically and doing the Penguin dance. The people in the canoe were just as frightened as the Loons. We explained that Loons are afraid of raised paddles and encouraged them to quietly glide on by with lowered paddles. That

did the trick. The Loons calmed down and resumed socializing with each other. The parents eventually returned to their chick and took turns delivering fish until it was full. The mystery juvenile Loons have taken up residence on WBL and we can usually find them near the slot. Last week, we spotted a huge Pelican taking off in the cove. The Loons made their warning calls as it flew over them and carried on with their fish deliveries. All is good in Loon world. Wishing you all a safe and happy Fourth of July! Hopefully, the chick will handle the fireworks better than all the dogs and puppies around the lake.

The DNR is working on setting a collective annual withdrawal for the lake, per the 2017 Court Order, which will impact municipal water appropriation permits within five miles.

A groundwater model created in 2017 helps predict impacts on lake level at differing levels of per capita use.

As reported earlier, the model concluded that an annual withdrawal limit of 314 million gallons would maintain the lake above the protected elevation of 922 feet using current census data.

The DNR determined there would be only enough water for household use at that withdrawal limit — 55 gallons per capita per day. All other uses would be cancelled, including water for hospitals, schools, government buildings and commercial use.

Of course, that’s not going to happen.

The DNR got clarification from the District Court judge that nothing in the order was intended to limit domestic water use to 55 gallons.

The court also clarified that the 75/90 per capita goal and residential irrigation ban (below 923.5 feet) was only intended for municipal permit holders.

“That puts the DNR in a pickle,” said Randall Doneen, manager of conservation and assistance. “We have a lot of uncertainty as to how to implement collective annual withdrawal limit. We’re not supposed to go to 55 gallons.”

Yet, the DNR has an obligation to maintain the lake above 922 feet, Doneen pointed out. “Failure to comply could leave the DNR subject to sanctions of $1,000 per day, per the Court.”

Without relief or clarification from the Court, or other resolution identified, the DNR will not be able to authorize any additional water use within 5 miles of the lake, Doneen said.

The good news is communities within 5 miles of the lake are using less water now than they did 30 years ago – 5.5 million vs. 7.5 million gallons, Moeckel told the committee.

“If people were using that amount of

water then (5.5 million gallons), lake levels wouldn’t have gone as low.”

The bad news is the model shows under all scenarios, whether 75 or 90 gallons per capita per day, a goal set by the Court, lake level is predicted to drop below the protected elevation of 922 feet, assuming similar weather patterns, Moeckel stated.

The DNR section manager said the agency is looking at options maintain lake level, even dusting off old files on feasibility studies.

One option included raising the outlet to keep water in. “We simulated that,” Moeckel said. “It does make a bit of a difference, about a half foot, so it’s something that could be pursued.”

Another option involved targeting certain permit holders. “We can maintain protected elevation with existing uses if two or three communities switch to surface water,” Moeckel continued, adding, “distance matters. The closer the wells, the more effect pumping has on the lake.

“We now know groundwater pumping

is affecting lake level,” Moeckel maintained. “A lot of municipal wells are 3 or 4 miles away (from the lake) so it takes a long time for pumping from the aquifer to have an effect on lake levels.

A ban on irrigation, another option, doesn’t have much effect on lake level, something the DNR has reported before.

And then there’s augmentation.

Studied in 2016, two alignment options were reviewed back then as a water source: Sucker Lake and East Vadnais Lake. Capital costs were still on the slides but numbers are in 2015 dollars.

“There are questions,” Doneen said.

“Do we want to support augmentation with surface water? What would it cost?

Is it worth the money?

“Bottom line, we know groundwater pumping is affecting lake levels. We’re going to have levels go below protected elevation if we don’t do anything different. Regardless of the courts, something needs to be done. It will take the whole north and east metro to come together. We need to start working towards water supply planning.”

White Bear Lake fishing team season underway

The White Bear Lake High School Fishing Team had the winning duo in the first Northeast Metro Conference tournament, held June 20 on Rush Lake. The team also includes 2 duos who have qualified for the national meet.

Tyler Thilmany, rising senior, and Eli Hansen, rising junior, snagged five bass weighing 13.81 pounds for the top entry among 40 boats at Rush Lake.

The Bears had eight two-person teams entered.

Other conference schools are Mahtomedi, Centennial, Spring Lake Park and Hill Murray. There will be two more conference meets, in July and August, with participants trying to

qualify for a state meet in September.

At the state meet, they try qualify for next year’s nationals.

Set for the 2022 nationals in South Carolina in August are the teams of Andrew Mailer and Caleb Walton, and Cal Ambrose and Zach Loken.

All will be juniors except Mailer, who will be a sophomore.

The White Bear Lake team, coached

by Jenn Thilmany, Jacob Montgomery, and Todd Krantz, has 24 total members.

In each meet, the kids operate the trolling motor but an adult captain operates the big motor.

Along with the three conference meets, members are able to enter meets on the SATT (Student Angler Tournament Trail) and BASS (Bassmaster Angler Sportsman Society) circuits.

Sean Hjelle broke into the major leagues by pitching in two games with the San Francisco Giants May 6 and June 3, although he’s currently back in Triple A. The 25-year-old righthander from Mahtomedi is doing well with the Sacramento River Cats, and hoping for another shot with the Giants.

Hjelle pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning in his big league debut against the St. Louis Cardinals May 6, needing only 11 pitches to retire Juan Yepez and Andrew Knizner on groundouts, and strike out Corey Dickerson.

The score was 2-2 at the time; the Giants lost 3-2 in the ninth.

An article on mlb. com noted that Hjelle had called home at 2 a.m. that morning with the news that he’d been called up. Despite the short notice, his mom and dad were in the stands at the Giants’ Oracle Park, along with his wife Caroline and their two sons, George, two,

Emmett, six weeks.

“It’s what you dream about as a kid,” said Hjelle in the article.

“They hand you the ball, and you’ve got a job. You just go out there and do it. It was awesome. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”

The 6-foot-11 Hjelle tied Jon Rauch (who pitched for the Twins among other teams) as the tallest player on record in the Major Leagues.

Hjelle didn’t pitch again until June 3, when he gave up two runs, two hits and two walks in three innings, striking out five, in a 15-6 win over the Florida Marlins.

Back in Sacramento, Hjelle pitched five scoreless innings last week in a 5-3 win over El Paso. In his last five starts for the River Cats, he's allowed just three earned runs in 23 innings, striking out 23.

had an impressive college career at Kentucky, posting a 22-10 career record, before signing with the Giants after his junior season there. He was the 45th pick in the 2018 draft, taken in the second round.

Hjelle is one of two Mahtomedi graduates who have pitched in the major leagues recently.

Mike Baumann broke in with the Baltimore Orioles late last season and started the current season with the Orioles, but is currently back in Triple A in Norfolk, Virginia.

Keep fear factor in check How often have you been tentative over a shot? Maybe unsure of the club Tee selection, Time or your ability to Betsy Larey actually hit the shot. When you plant the seed of doubt in your brain, the fear factor sets in and it’s downhill from there.

Fear is a physiological effect that can ruin your game. I think most people can’t control their fear because they have no strategy for what they are going to do when faced with adversity.

The first thing that often happens is muscle tension increases. Your swing can get quick, you can lose your balance, and a host of other different problems. Muscle tension works its way into your hands and jaw first.

The easiest way to take tension out of your hands is to have the correct grip pressure. Extend your arms and hold a club straight up in the air.

With your eyes closed count from 1 to 10, adding a little more pressure every step up to 10 (death grip). Count backwards to 1, then up again and

stop at 3 to 4. That is your perfect grip pressure.

Another option is to take a big breath and exhale slowly right before you make the shot. This takes the tension out of your muscles and allows you to hold the club with your perfect grip pressure.

One of the best tips I’ve used with clients is to put together the words “smooth swing” or “one two” as you swing. That is the perfect tempo for the golf swing, plus saying it forces you to have a transition from your backswing to your downswing. If there isn’t a transition, the sequential order falls apart and the result is usually pretty ugly.

Everyone acts a bit different when the fear factor sets in. The next time you’re playing an important match, write down the results of your shots when you are faced with adversity. I think you’ll find you do the same things again and again. Knowing what your tendencies are and having strategies in place to deal with them will help you gain confidence and become a better golfer.

Sadie Marjorie “Marge” Polanek

Passed away June 19, 2022. Born June 18, 1922 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Peter and Sadie (nee Holle) Polanek, who preceded her in death, as also her siblings Norma Polanek and Alex Polanek, she is survived by her son James (Sheryl) Nash, as well as four grandchildren, Jessica (Zach) McNeil, and Karina, Josiah and Adam Nash, and one great-grandson Ezra McNeil. Apart from WW2 stints in Washington DC and the WAVES, she was a lifelong resident of Ramsey County. She had the privilege of performing with the WAVES’ singing platoon on the Perry Como radio tribute to FDR April 12, 1945. Her quiet care simply touched many lives, whether in her family, at church or work, in her neighborhood, through hobbies and lastly at Cerenity Care Center in White Bear Lake. Her life will be celebrated at 7 pm July 13th at St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church in White Bear Lake. Ronald Fernon Putneyson, brother, and friend - passed away unexpectedly on June 1, 2022, at the age of 68. Ron was born in Saint Paul, MN, on September 24, 1953, to Kenneth (Deceased) and Lavonne. He was the fourth of five siblings; Bob (Mickey), Denny (Deceased) (Mary), Jerry, and Bill (Krystan). Ron was a long-time resident of White Bear Lake, MN, graduating from White Bear Lake High School in 1971. He was a devoted son and brother, always attending sports games of his nephews and nieces. Ron was a sports enthusiast enjoying watching hockey and football, always having some sort of sports game on the TV. He spent his winters at his home in Arizona, while spending time in Minnesota during the summers fishing and playing golf. Ron was a long-time member of the Manitou Ridge Men’s Golf Club, where he enjoyed playing rounds with his golf buddies. He spent 48 years of his working career at US Bank in various positions before retiring in 2017. Although soft spoken and quiet, he was always a great supporter and encourager of family and friends.

Left to cherish his wonderful memory are his mother, three living siblings, three nieces, two nephews, cousins, and friends.

A Celebration of Life for Ron will be held on Saturday July 23, from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the North Saint Paul Legion, during which memories of Ron will be expressed and a light meal served. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to American Diabetes Association.

Lois Connelly Hanson, age 94, of Rochester, MN, formerly of White Bear Lake, MN passed away on April 6, 2022.

Born in Superior Wisconsin, Lois graduated from Superior Cathedral High School, attended the University of Wisconsin at Superior, and graduated from St. Mary’s School of X-Ray Technology. She served as an elementary school nurse’s aide in the White Bear Lake school system for 20 years. Lois was very active for many years in the White Bear Lake Silver Harmony Singers, White Bear Lake League of Woman Voters, and the St. Pius X Rosary Club.

She also volunteered for several years at the Gillette Children’s Hospital.

She is survived by her son, Steven Hanson (Candace) of Stockton, NJ and grandsons, Evan and Drew Hanson of Stockton, NJ; and by her son, Dr. Gregory Hanson (Dr. Michele Hanson) of Rochester, Minnesota, and grandchildren, Dr. Jay Hanson (Jennifer) of Austin, Texas, Dr. Tess Hanson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Kate Hanson (Sean) of Nashville, Tennessee, and great grandchild Alexandra Hanson of Austin, Texas; and by her niece, Susan McGlauchlin of Plymouth, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard (Barney) Hanson; parents, Theresa Sheehan Connelly Gleason and James Stephen Connelly; sister, Dorothy Connelly McGlauchlin; and nephew, Fr. Michael McGlauchlin.

Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, July 16,2022, 11:00 a.m. at ST. PIUS X, 3878 Highland Avenue, White Bear Lake with visitation one hour before Mass.

Eunice Juanita Krinn, 95, Oakdale MN, June 26, 2022.

Born to Edna and Ervin in Milwaukee, WI. She met Dale Krinn during his training at Great Lakes Naval Station for his eventual role in the D-Day invasion.

They married in 1945 and lived most of their married life near Germantown, WI. After Dale’s death in 1984, Eunice moved to Minnesota to be near her daughters and married Cecil Jolly of Vadnais Heights in 1988. Eunice worked as an RMA many years and enjoyed food, fashion, music, travel, and her cats. She is survived by sons Roger Krinn and Gene (Susan) Krinn, daughters Cheryl (George) Moore and Lori Reichert, brother Harold and his four children, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. Although her physical health declined in recent years, her mind remained sharp to the very end. Eunice was a long-term member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, White Bear Lake, MN. A celebration of her life will be held in Germantown at a later date.

Emily “Emmy” Marie Just-Fleck, Age 60, of Mahtomedi, MN, peacefully took her last breath lovingly surrounded by family, her best friend, and her beloved kitties on Sunday, January 30, 2022, after a 7 year battle with early-onset Dementia.

Emily was born on July 8, 1961, in Minneapolis, MN. She was the second-youngest of 11 children, and grew up near the shores of White Bear Lake in the small city of Birchwood Village with her life-long friends, Colleen and Claudia Jefferson, and Nancy Maas. She graduated from White Bear Lake Mariner High School in 1979, and then on June 28, 1982, she married Randy Sorenson and they had 3 children, Nicole Marie, Jordan James, and Shelby May. In 1993, with 3 kids at home, Emily made the decision to go back to night-school, and completed her Nursing degree in the Spring of 1997. Emily was beyond proud of becoming a Registered Nurse - not only because she was able to show her children that success comes from working hard, but also because she was able to turn her love for helping people into a rewarding career. On December 31, 2002, Emily married her soulmate, Daryle Just, and welcomed his 3 children into her family. Emily and Daryle were inseparable from that moment on.

Emily was a lifelong lover of animals, and that trend carried through until her very last breath. She began rescuing animals at a very young age. Dogs, cats, ferrets, rats, bunnies, birds - the list goes on and on. Emily loved them all and this was obvious to anyone that met her throughout her life.

Emily is preceded in death by her mother, Helen McKenna Fleck; her father, George Jackson Fleck; her brothers Gayl James and Dennis Charles; her nephews Brice Spinarski and Chevas Guertin; and her niece Kassey Fleck.

Emily is survived by her husband Daryle ”Bubby” Just-Fleck; her children Coley “Coleybear” (Adam) Wogsland, Jordan “Jordo” (Bree) Sorenson, and Shelby “Miss Bee” Sorenson; her granddaughter Quinn Marie; her step-children Joshua, Julia, and Victor; her step-granddaughters Mira and Melinda; her siblings Laura Fleck, Elena Carrel, Alma (Mike) Bergmann, Kenneth Fleck, Martha (Tim) Halverson, Nathaniel (Victoria) Fleck, Margaret (Joe) Guertin, and Jonathan (Susan) Fleck; her many nieces and nephews; and her beloved rescue-kittens Patsy, Douglas, Timothy, Fussy, and Bogey.

Please help us to always remember Emily by taking a moment to think of her each time you wear purple, drink a Pepsi, eat fettuccine alfredo, rescue an animal, plant flowers, or sit out in the warm summer sun.

A celebration of life is planned for Emily on July 8th, 2022 (Emily’s Birthday) at Katherine Abbott Park in Mahtomedi, MN that will be open-house style from 4pm-8pm with a special program starting at 6pm.

We invite everyone to wear their favorite shades of purple, in memory of Em.
