School District sets 2024-25 calendar, course changes BY NOELLE OLSON EDITOR
Next fall, the White Bear Lake Area School District will offer new secondary courses and will have a different beginning to the 2024-25 school year. According to Dr. Alison Gillespie, assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, the first day of school will be Tuesday, Sept. 3, for sixth and 12th graders. The first day for grades one through five will be Wednesday, Sept. 4. Thursday, Sept. 5, will be the first day for kindergartners, sophomores and juniors. “We are excited to have the 9-12 high school open and on the first day of school, Principal Reetz would like to have the seniors in the building solely just for next year to set the culture in the building,” said Gillespie. “He’s working with our current juniors to decide what that will look like, and more information is to come.” SEE SCHOOL BOARD, PAGE 13
Council votes to ban smoking, not edibles, in public places BY NOELLE OLSON EDITOR
Elijah, 4 “With cheese bites. You put the cheese in there and make it into real cheese.”
Tre, 4 “Put it in the oven and eat it.”
Haven, 4 “With an oven. First take it out and then eat the turkey.”
The Vadnais Heights City Council is amending the smoking ban ordinance in public places. “This is a carry forward from our last meeting discussion about equity as it relates to smoking in public spaces,” said Kevin Watson, city administrator. “The previous proposal included public sidewalks everywhere, and this new one basically prohibits smoking, whether it’s tobacco or cannabis, in our public parks or on public property like campuses, city hall, fire hall, North Center Campus as well as any trails or sidewalks within those properties.” The City Council asked staff to research what other Ramsey County communities have decided related to the issue. They are as follows. • Roseville – Banned smoking at specific city facilities, parks and their parking lots, but not SEE SMOKING BAN, PAGE 17

COMMUNITY BRIEF State flag, seal designs available for public viewing

More than 2,600 designs were submitted to the State Emblems Redesign Commission during a onemonth period; qualifying submissions are now available online. Minnesota state flag designs make up about 85% of the submissions. Those are available to view at serc.mnhs.org/flags. Minnesota state seal designs make up approximately 15% of submissions. Thanksgiving spans cultures
I
t’s so easy to overlook giving thanks for all that God has provided us.
This national holiday is not exclusive to the United States. It can be traced back to Native Americans and other parts of the world where at harvest time people of different cultures celebrated their bounty with festivals. Thanksgiving was true in the ancient Jewish time of harvest when they celebrated Sukkot. Our history goes back to 1621 when the colonists from England were looking for religious freedom and opportunities of wealth. 102 passengers boarded the small ship called Mayflower for the difficult crossing that took 66 days and landed at Cape Cod. Their first winter was brutal. They continued to live aboard the ship and only half of the original passengers and crew The remaining went ashore to be About the survived. greeted by several different Indian tribes. They were taught how to grow corn, tap Town maple trees, catch fish, and avoid poisonous Gene Johnson plants. In November of 1621 their first corn harvest proved successful and their Governor Bradford organized a feast which began the history of our Thanksgiving. It wasn’t until 1789 when George Washington issued the proclamation that Thanksgiving became a national holiday to celebrate the country’s independence and ratification of the U.S. Constitution. Today in America the holiday is changing as our heritage has changed with many different cultures. Menus are quite different. But there are still people like our family who celebrate around the dinner table with turkey, sweet potatoes, cranberries, which generally concludes with pumpkin pie. Over the years we have had opportunities to share our dinner table with foreign guests visiting our universities and through student exchange programs. We would often go around the table asking individuals what they were most thankful for. At one dinner we had people from five different countries represented at our table. We still continue to be thankful for the United States of America, its constitutional freedoms, for safety we have enjoyed, the representative government, though it is now split and has lost sight of how they represent the American people. We have also been able to help thousands of people across the world suffering from various types of hardships. May God continue to favor us and restore our confidence in our democracy.
Santa Humor
Writing a column prompts readers and friends to share bits and pieces of information. Some of it is humor and I love that. Here’s one from a reader. “Dear Santa, This year please bring me a big fat bank account and a slim body. Don’t mix the two up like you did last year. Thanks.”
Panama City Beach
Kathy and I had the privilege this fall of spending six weeks at Panama City Beach, Florida, through friends who own condo investments. The offseason rates made it even more attractive. But one thing is missing-neighbors who are friends. We miss that after Hurricane Ian destroyed our motor yacht that was moored at Legacy Harbour in Fort Myers. There we had neighbors who were less than six feet away and we had opportunities to visit throughout the day and at happy hours and group dinners. In Panama City, it became clear to us how important relationships are. We miss our friends and it gets boring. Thankfully our daughters took turns driving us down and back home. And our son visited for a few days. The Gulf of Mexico is the ninth largest body of water in the world totaling 600,000 square miles. It is bordered by the United States, Mexico and Cuba. The beach area has military bases and reports are 950 people move to Florida on an average day. The tourist numbers at the Panama City Beach area averages 4.5 million annually and the town has less than 20,000 residents. That means a lot of high-rise condos.
A time to give thanks
Happy Thanksgiving. Take time to reflect on what God has provided us. the We enjoy freedom in this country. Our military and veterans have fought very hard through several wars to maintain it. Don’t let it slip away. Gene Johnson is publisher emeritus of Press Publications.

Talking adult family dynamics with U of M
A
s we head into the winter holiday season and the many gatherings with immediate and extended family that this season can bring, University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development family therapist and professor Tai Mendenhall shares his expertise about how to navigate adult family dynamics. Q: What are the most common themes you observe in adult family dynamics? A: Family scholars have identified myriad relational dynamics that play out differently across healthy versus unhealthy families, and these vary in the ways that they manifest across different cultures and social groups. Some of the most common themes include: • Communication: how we express ourselves to each other, and how we listen to and/or receive others when they talk with us. • Closeness and cohesion: how close and engaged we are, or how distant and disengaged we are. • Adaptability: how we solve problems and navigate stress together. Most of these dynamics are best when they are somewhere between “too much” and “too little”, and they evolve over time and context. They also tend to shift between parents and children as the children grow up.
Q: What should parents keep in mind when their adult children visit? A: Remember that they are adults now. The manners in which they do any variety of things may be different than the ways that you would do things — from cooking to driving to responding to an acting-out child. Your job as their parent is no longer to guide, teach and discipline as you did when they were young. Pick your battles with your adult children and don’t sweat the small stuff. The visit is temporary, so enjoy time together — visit, share, play games, see shows or exchange gifts. Q: How can adult children approach family visits? A: Your parents are still your parents. If you are visiting them in their home, respect that it is their space, not yours. For example, don’t change the thermostat without asking them first and remember to clean up after yourself. Be sure to engage with them in authentic conversations; avoid scrolling through social media and watching TV independently. Q: What advice would you give to family members about navigating difficult conversations such as politics? A: It depends. If the family members who are visiting each other are not especially close or if the visit is only going to
be for a couple of hours over a holiday meal or gift-exchange, it might be best to just keep politics off the table. If family members are more invested in navigating potentially-heated conversations, find some common ground about things that you both agree about. Listen to understand, not to respond, attack, criticize or defend. Remember that it is doubtful that you will substantively change each other’s mind or position, i.e., “win” the argument. The best outcome is to sustain — and sometimes even enrich! — the relationship. Q: Where can people find more information about this topic and how does the U of M support healthy family dynamics? A: I would encourage anyone who is really struggling with couple and family dynamics to seek support – the earlier, the better – through a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT). These professionals specialize in working with family systems through a variety of interpersonal processes in problem-solving, healing and growth. The U of M trains many of the therapists and counselors in our state that provide this critical support to families. “Talking...with U of M” is a resource whereby University of Minnesota faculty answer questions on current and other topics of general interest.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Supremely half-hearted code of ethics
There are two relevant provisions in the new Supreme Court Ethics Rules addressing the Justices’ obligation of disclosure; but none of them seems to actually mandate full financial disclosure. Instead, they simply require compliance with restrictions on acceptance of gifts, and make a self-serving claim they have complied with disclosure requirements for some time. The code then expressed that each Justice reaffirms his or her “commitment” to continue those disclosures. But if that means continuing the half-hearted disclosures the Justices have demonstrated so far, then this is not a substantial improvement. The Court still has miles to go before it can put to rest the public’s legitimate doubts about Supreme Court ethical propriety. Albert Turner Goins, Sr. White Bear Lake
War crimes being committed Here we go again. The old adage “Two wrongs don’t make a right” sure makes the front page in the ongoing Israeli and Hamas war. On Oct. 7, Hamas terrorists butchered 1,200 men, women and children. This day a war crime is tattooed on Hamas’ members, young and old. Netanyahu didn’t take long for the Israeli War Council to institute a complete and total destruction of Hamas and its followers in the war-torn Gaza. In a matter of days, the
Israeli war machine, financed by the USA, proceeded to bomb to smithereens the 2 million-plus state of Gaza. This annihilation included schools, apartments, hospitals and those 300-milelong underground tunnels that Hamas has constructed over the last 40 years. Israel has controlled the electricity, fuel, food, water and medical supplies, and day-to-day life of every Palestinian for the last half century. In the last three weeks, Israel has slaughtered more than 11,000 Palestinians, including some 4,000 children. That’s war crime number No. 2. With the watching world demanding a cease-fire so the injured and homeless can be saved, Israel won’t consider a cease-fire as they insist Hamas will try to replace weaponry. Israel continues its slaughter of Hamas and Palestinians. There’s a way to stop these war crimes shortly. We have to stop the U.S.’s $13 billion weaponry aid package to Israel that has allowed this carnage to continue into perpetuity. The U.S. is complicit in Israel’s war crimes, and should be held accountable. My statements are not antisemitic. They are backed by facts, of decades of bullying the Palestinians by the State of Israel. How can there be peace in a world of hate, injustice, poverty, ignorance and indifference? It lies in the power of prayer! What else is there? Jim Brunzell, Jr. Vadnais Heights

Golf club head pro to step down BY NOELLE OLSON EDITOR
The North Oaks Golf Club is getting ready to say goodbye to Ray Vennewitz. “The North Oaks Golf Club has always been a special place to me and our entire family,” Vennewitz said. “The club has been so unbelievably loyal and supportive of our family through our 52 years of service to the club.” Vennewitz, of White Bear Township, has been the head pro for 16 years at the North Oaks Golf Club. Before that, he spent five years as an assistant. His dad, Ray Sr., worked at the club for 31 years and passed away 11 years ago. “On Sept. 7, Pat (Markley, general manager of the North Oaks Golf Club) shared with me a very positive email about extending my contract, which ends on Dec. 31,” Vennewitz said. “I responded to him that I was not mentally or physically ready to do that, but I wanted the weekend to pray about it and talk to my family. I did that and came to the conclusion that it would be best for me and my family to not extend my contract.” Vennewitz continued, “This decision was extremely difficult for me to make and was not taken lightly. I have spent nearly my entire life at the club and have had so many great memories. However, at the end of the day, if I didn’t have the energy to do the job at a high level then I didn’t feel it was fair to the membership to continue.” The North Oaks Golf Club plans to have a new golf pro hired by the end of November. Vennewitz said he will miss the team and members of the club. “The team that we have in place at the club is special and is like family,” Vennewitz said. “Most importantly, we all got along so well. It has been an absolute pleasure to be part of such a great team. I will also miss the great members that we have at the club. Their support of not only me, but our entire team, is so very much

appreciated. You treat us like family, and you don’t see that at most clubs.” Even though he is stepping down to spend more time with his family, Vennewitz is not planning to retire completely. “I may be slowing down, but I’m definitely not retiring,” Vennewitz said. “I’m gonna do something. I just don’t know exactly what, but I’ll probably stay in golf.”

WBCA Members’ Exhibition Now on View White Bear Center for the Arts’ Members’ Exhibition opened on November 13 with a record breaking 245 pieces of artwork on display. Each piece was created by a different artist, and all artists are members of White Bear Center for the Arts, making it an incredible display of local creativity. The show spills out of the Ford Family Gallery into the Exhibition Hall and atrium, filling the art center with motion and color. Find textiles, ceramic art, paintings, drawings, photographs, and more lining the walls, telling the stories of an entire arts community. “This show is a celebration of our members, with each piece offering a window into their diverse talents, creativity, and dedication,” said Sara Nephew, WBCA’s Creative Services Director. “Cheers to the artists, the heart and soul of our treasured
community.” The show is on display now through January 17, 2024, and is free for all. The Community Reception & Holiday Reception for the show will be held on Thursday, December 7 from 3:30-8:30 PM.
Woodfire Exploration
On a farm in Hudson Wisconsin, at the home of local potter Zac Spates, sits a kiln. It’s a large, handbuilt, hut-like structure around five feet tall. And a few times a year, it fires hundreds and hundreds of pieces of pottery by the heat of burning wood. Zac Spates built this anagama woodfire kiln seven years ago with the help of friends, from a mixture of hard firebrick and high temperature cast cement. About once a year, Zac Spates offers his Woodfire Exploration class through White Bear Center for the Arts, in order to teach the firing process. This fall, WBCA students had the chance to visit Zac’s studio, and try their hand at firing the kiln. The process started in September when students got to work throwing mugs and plates and vases on the wheel in preparation for the event. After glazing their pieces, the students headed to Zac’s farm to begin the 48-hour endeavor of firing the kiln. “Firing is my favorite part of the process,” Zac said in a conversation with White Bear Center for the Arts. “It’s always such an excitement
to go from unfired pots to opening the kiln to brand new finished pots that are always different.” Over the course of 48 hours, students stoked the kiln with pine, oak, and a smattering of other hardwoods, and the kiln reached 2,200 degrees fahrenheit. Each firing produces different colors and patterns from the wood ash, flame, heat and oxygen, so each piece is unique.
Student Kerrie Walters learned about White Bear Center for the Arts for the first time through this class, after searching for woodfire experiences in the area. “It was special to see the pots every time you opened up the kiln to stoke the fire,” Kerrie said. “It makes you closer to all steps in the process of creating ceramics.” In the end, students came away with one-of-a-kind pieces of woodfired pottery, as well as the unique experience of stoking the kiln with wood hour after hour, and watching as their pieces transform in the heat of the kiln. “The labor involved in firing is completely different from turning on an electric or gas kiln,” Zac said. Zac values sharing this firing experience with the broader clay community. “I’ve always wanted to share the process because I believe it’s important for someone doing pottery to understand other processes,” he said. “There’s no better way than to experience it yourself.”

SCHOOL BOARD: Plan for next year
PAUL DOLS | PRESS PUBLICATIONS
The walking track at the field house is a popular destination for local residents.
Spring break will be March 10-14, and winter break will be Dec. 23-Jan. 1, 2025. Gillespie noted students will be back in school on Thursday, Jan. 2. “That’s unique in terms of how the holidays fall,” Gillespie said. “That allows us to end the school year in June on the first Friday (June 6), which is preferred for families, students and staff.” Jen Babiash, director of teaching and learning, said the district has secondary new course proposals, course replacements, course names or grade level changes for the 2024-25 school year. “Our work is grounded in our world’s best workforce goal that all students are college and careerready by graduation,” Babiash said. “We use this as our guide when we consider new secondary courses and any changes. We also take into consideration perspectives from our industry partners, post-secondary institutions and, of course, our students. Finally, we consider school capacity to implement new courses including implications for staffing, enrollment, scheduling and facilities.” Here are some of the new courses for the 2024-25 school year. • Merchandising/DECA, 11-12 grade • School Grounds Coffee Shop, 11-12 grade • Beginning instrumental ensemble, 9-12 grade • Percussion ensemble, 9-12 grade • Rock band 101 and 201, 10-12 grade • Integrated science, grade 9 • Advanced Placement (AP) PreCalculus, 9-12 grade “I like the fact that we’re giving our students more opportunities, especially in different career fields so that they can experience some of the things they would see in that
field,” said Scott Arcand, school board member. “By adding some of this, they get to add the co-curricular, which also will help them build their leadership, and it’s just a great way of giving them more opportunities.” To view the full list of secondary courses, visit bit.ly/47eMY8m. To view the 2024-25 White Bear Lake Area Schools academic calendar, go to wblahs.isd624.org.
Other school board notes
• With the cooler weather, Superintendent Dr. Wayne Kazmierczak invites people to the White Bear Lake Area High School North Campus Field House to use the walking track. It will be open for community use from 6-9 p.m. each Monday through Thursday. “The opportunity is free, and we ask that those who join us wear clean dry shoes,” Kazmierczak said. • For the 23rd consecutive year, the district has received the Government Finance Officers Association’s certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting. The district also received the Excellence in Financial Reporting award from the Association of School Business Officials. “These awards are the highest form of recognition a governmental agency can receive and represent a significant accomplishment for the finance department and staff,” Kazmierczak said. “Our finance team has a longstanding dedication to stewardship, transparency and financial responsibility.”
The next White Bear Lake Area School Board meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at the District Center, 4855 Bloom Avenue in White Bear Lake.

will of the council.” He continued, “My view is smoking products in a public space can easily be inhaled secondhand. Whereas the use of an edible or a beverage, I don’t see this as affecting other people around them.” The ordinance states that no person shall use tobacco, cannabis flower, cannabis products, lowerpotency hemp edibles, or 50 hemp-derived consumer products within a public place as defined under section 16-1. Goebel suggested the council remove the eating or ingesting portion of the ordinance. The City Council approved the ordinance with an amendment of, “No person shall smoke or vape, tobacco, cannabis or hemp-derived products within public places defined under Section 16-1.” “I really appreciate the detail and the sincere consideration that this council takes with every matter that comes before it,” said Mayor Mike Krachmer. “It makes me feel like we are doing important work and being responsive to our constituents.”
sidewalks and trails throughout the community. • Little Canada – Banned smoking on all public property, including off-street trails but not sidewalks. The logic is that most sidewalks are within 25 feet of public entrances, at which Ramsey County already prohibits smoking. • St. Anthony – Plans to ban smoking at any public park and city campuses. Only prohibiting smoking on trails and sidewalks within those campuses. • Lauderdale – Plans to ban smoking in public parks only. • White Bear Lake – Bans cannabis smoking in all public spaces including trails and rights of way. “I liked that we took the time to table this at our last meeting,” said City Council Member Erik Goebel. “The only thing that I would like to bring up is this does ban smoking of any substance, both tobacco and cannabis. This also seems to make illegal the use of lower-potency hemp edibles or any other consumer products. And I’m not sure if that is the

New Christmas tree farm makes plans for 2024 season
SMOKING BAN: Edibles allowed FROM PAGE 1
VADNAIS HEIGHTS PRESS
BY SHANNON GRANHOLM MANAGING EDITOR
Not this year, but next, families will have another opportunity to create a holiday tradition a bit closer to home. Steve Kavan, of North Oaks, plans to open Kavan Christmas Tree Farm in time for the 2024 holiday season. He purchased the 40-acre property in 2018. “I like the outdoors,” he said. “I’m big on the outdoors and Christmas … (My family) always gets a tree, so somehow I stumbled upon planting Christmas trees.” The property caught his attention, and he said it was affordable, since it was not zoned properly for a house. The property is located right on the S-curve on Ash Street/County Road J in Lino Lakes. “It was just happenstance,” Kavan said. Kavan’s background is in accounting and finance, and he dabbles in real estate. He openly admitted he doesn’t have any experience planting or growing trees. “It’s all new. It’s been a big learning curve,” he said. “This is a whole new adventure.” Kavan estimates he currently has approximately 16,000 trees on 20 acres of property, but he likely planted around 30,000 of them. He explained the past three years have been tricky due to the severe drought. He is thankful that other
businesses in the industry have been very helpful and supportive of his new adventure. He has visited several other tree farms to compare notes and learn. In addition to several trips to Krueger’s Tree Farm in Lake Elmo, last winter he volunteered there. “The industry has been great relative to other industries I’ve been in,” he said. “People are super nice, friendly and supportive. It’s refreshing … they don’t look at me as a competitor, they look at it as they need more farmers.” He explained it is hard to get people in the industry because it takes so long before the trees are ready to be sold. On average, he said it takes about eight years. So come next year, he said he will have some trees that will be ready; however, he does plan to supplement demand by bringing in some pre-cut trees for customers. He has planted a variety of trees, including: balsam fir, Fraser fir, Canaan fir, Norway pine, white pine and Colorado spruce. He said he has had the best luck so far with balsam fir, as it is native to Minnesota. It has been a lot of “trial and error.” Kavan hopes the farm might just be his children’s first work experience. He and his wife have two children, 11-yearold Lydia and 8-year-old Wade, who both attend Turtle

Lake Elementary School in Shoreview. Kavan has committed to donating at least 5% of his proceeds to Centennial School as well as the Centennial Community Food Shelf. “It will be a fun holiday memory for people,” Kavan said. “They can have a great time outdoors, and it is relaxing.” The cut-your-own tree farm will likely open the week before Thanksgiving 2024 and be open for a few weekends after that. Dan Arcand, of Hugo, is a 20-year veteran. As a Marine who was deployed six times, he has been to a lot of funerals. “The reality is that with multiple combat deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan, I’ve lost more friends to suicide than I have to combat,” he said. “My second chapter is trying to make an impact on the veterans suicide rate.” Arcand, 38, says he knew he wanted to be in the military, specifically the
Marines, at the age of 3. His father, Scott Arcand, served in the Marines for three years. Several other family members have also served in the military. He recalled when he was in preschool and his preschool teacher asked him, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and he responded, “A Marine.” “I’m 100% certain a lot of it had to do with seeing pictures of my dad in the uniform, him talking about it,” Arcand said. “I mean there’s something appealing about a challenge, they have
a certain type of reputation about them.” Arcand enlisted as an infantryman and actually left high school early to head to boot camp. During his 20year military career he was deployed six times. Back in 2010, while he was in between deployments, Arcand launched a nonprofit called American Spartan to help veterans who were wounded in action. That nonprofit ran until 2017. Arcand explained that the nonprofit wasn’t

They all outlived their children, who were victims of a fentanyl overdose. “It’s an empty feeling, because it isn’t like they were sick or had cancer or an illness that you could kind of mentally prepare yourself for. It a sudden death,” Cowles said. “I never expected to outlive my children.” Cowles, a Circle Pines resident, lost her 30-year-old son, Castle

He leaves behind three children, ages 12, 9 and 6. “I got a phone call from the prison saying that he had passed away. I was in shock,” she recalled. “At first, they couldn’t tell me what had happened, and then about two weeks later, they finally told me that he had passed from a fentanyl overdose… How does fentanyl get in a prison?” Eventually she was told that

Veterans Day Assembly
Central Middle School seventh graders enjoyed a Veterans Day assembly with special guest Major Barry Hendriksen, who spoke to the students about his experience serving in the military. Hendricksen announced the winners of the Central Level of the VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest — students Jessica Say, Audriana Walsh-Smith and Piper Wilding. These three winners will move on in the VFW’s contest. Central Middle School teacher Carrie Reisdorfer was nominated and chosen by the White Bear Lake VFW as the VFW Teacher of the Year. Reisdorfer will now continue on to the district level of the program. Kari Janzen from Central is a past
years’ recipient of the White Bear VFW level of the award, which honors teachers who teach civic education.
District leaders present at national design conference District leaders accompanied a team from Wold Architects and Engineers, the firm that designed the majority of the district’s construction projects made possible by the community’s support of the 2019 bond referendum, to present at the Edspaces “Designing the Future of Education” national conference. The annual event is described as the place where leaders and innovators unite to drive the future of learning environments, where technology, space and pedagogy converge.
The district’s presentation focused on the design and construction of North Star Elementary, which opened in Hugo in the fall of 2022. North Star Elementary was carefully planned from the perspective of both the physical space and the pedagogical perspective to support student agency and flexibility. The process included significant stakeholder input throughout the process and professional development to support the mission. “Innovative and future-ready learning environments are being created throughout the district, and while the concept of student agency may not be new, we are frontrunners with the work happening at North Star Elementary School,” said
multifunctional in the Learning Studio and adds to the flexibility. “It was rewarding to be able to share with school and district leaders from throughout the nation, and the world, what we have been able to achieve at North Star,” said Principal Dan Schmidt. “We started with a shared dream of how to ‘do school differently,’ and we were able to realize that dream with the help of a community that supported our
vision.”

Through a strategic design of the space, the environment has become an essential tool in shaping the student experience. Multiage learning has been implemented in some of the studios, and sensory spaces where students can reduce anxiety and self-regulate when needed have been incorporated in all of the studios. Kayla Anderson (11), White Bear Lake’s career scoring leader, played her fourth and final college season this fall at South Dakota State. BY BRUCE STRAND SPORTS CONTRIBUTOR
Three of the top women’s soccer players produced by White Bear Lake and Mahtomedi are playing for perennial power South Dakota State University. Another, Jenna Maloy, has also committed to the Jackrabbits. Katelyn Beulke, freshman from Mahtomedi, and two White Bear Lake graduates, senior Kayla Anderson and sophomore Lauren Eckerle, saw action for the Jackrabbits, who finished 13-4-3 and qualified for the NCAA Division I tournament. Anderson, senior forward, played in 20 games, with 14 starts, in her fourth college season, logging three goals and two assists. She is the Bears all-time leader in goals with 61. SDSU has gone 55-914 in her four seasons. Beulke played 20 games, starting in 11, and was the
