“I got a mammogram in February 2023,” Sara Markoe Hanson said, “and I found a lump in my breast last November. That’s how fast this can spread.”

By nature of her job, Hanson, who has been the executive director of the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society CONTRIBUTED since 2001, does not like Sara Markoe Hanson surprises. In fact, after diligently tracking her extended family’s medical history, Hanson knew that a breast cancer diagnosis was likely a “when,” not an “if.”

Counterintuitively, Hanson credits her decision not to get tested for genetic predisposition as the reason she took action so early. “My mom had cancer surgery in 2001 at the beginning of genetic testing,” she recounted. “Sometimes, the tests didn’t come back right, and people let their guard down.

I was pregnant with my son at the time, so I said, ‘I’m not doing anymore medical tests,’ but I never lost sight of ‘it could happen.’”

Of course, Hanson does not recommend this course of action for people today. “The number of testing markers back then were only a few,” she cautions, “Now, it’s in the double digits.”

That’s because doctors’ understanding of cancer is constantly evolving.

“They say the type I have is not hereditary,” Hanson laughs, “yet many of my relatives got it. I think they just haven’t found the right markers.” The specific cancer to which Sara refers is Stage 2b, triple negative breast cancer. This means that Hanson is fighting an invasive, malignant tumor, likely between 20-50mm and possibly attached to a lymph node—though doctors won’t know for certain until they remove and examine the mass.

This type of tumor feeds off neither estrogen nor progesterone, and it does not use protein to grow. As such, this type of cancer can sometimes go undetected. Doctors must also use different treatment options. “Typically they do chemotherapy first, then surgery,” Hanson explains. “That’s not the usual (approach), but this kind tends to grow faster.”

rate, and Hanson found it early. “A big piece has been this: It’s not a matter of ‘Am I gonna survive?’

Our understanding is, ‘it’s treatable,’” Hanson reassures. Currently, her treatment plan consists of 12 weekly chemo sessions followed by intensive injections administered every three weeks for three months. Surgery is currently scheduled for June, but that could change.

“This is what (my doctors) think could happen,” Hanson outlined. “Everybody’s journey is different—different reactions, different situations.”

For Hanson, the variables are the most frustrating aspect of the process. “It’s against my nature,” she admits, “I’m a planner.” Still, she’s considering the silver lining of her changing duties at the historical society, saying, “It’s an opportunity to trust because I have to do this. I’m forced to step back. And it’s been really reaffirming. I feel gratitude to the vision that the board has had, the backing, and the faith to bring in staff.”

Hanson is also stunned by the kindness the

community and friends have shown her, calling it “overwhelming in an incredible way.”

Each family member’s advice about their cancer battle has given Hanson the best outlook. “My family is all different,” she points out, “but the common denominator is, they’re all still here and healthy! We’re gonna get to the other side.”

To the White Bear community, Sara Markoe Hanson has two warnings: First, “Be aware, alert, and listen to your body.”

Second, “I’m still at the Historical Society; I’m just lurking. You’re not getting rid of me that easily!”

‘famous’ couple,” she added. “The captain came back and asked us to move to First Class! This ‘famous’ woman was beside herself with disbelief and joy. I usually drool peeking up at first class with envy as they get a comforter and pillow.”

As is typical in her themed missives, Nancy expounded on the word “fame,” noting that “famous,” used as an adjective, means having a widespread reputation, usually of a favorable nature, renowned and celebrated.

“With that definition in mind, I think we know some very famous people in Kenya,” Nancy said. “I start with the founder of the Brydges Centre, Rosemary Wafula. She has been named one of four women in all of Africa as a woman of influence who has changed many children’s lives for the good.”

Nancy went on to include other influencers like Rev. Dennis and

Irene Tongoi, the former head of a Christian organization called the Navigators. “Dennis speaks on anticorruption, which is a devastating problem to the poor, especially,” Nancy pointed out. “Irene started a school in a very ignored slum where no child attended school because there wasn’t one. She started a ministry to pre-teens and teens about sexuality. Most girls in the Huruma slum were sexually active by 12, usually by rape.”

She also named Joseph Mulwa, whom the Brydges met as a driver 15 years ago. “He was a gangster in the Kibera slum during his teens, then experienced the love of God when he was about to rob a white woman on the street of her purse,” Nancy said.

“He became an advocate for slum children, opening schools, having vacation Bible classes, starting a job corps for women, and lately has been heavily involved in bringing water to desolate areas of Kenya.”

driver they met 12 years ago who struggled to start a travel fleet of vans. Today he is one of the best in the country, she said. He decided to give back by raising funds to put toilets in a Maasai girl’s school.

Also on Nancy’s list are the founders of a school for mentally and physically handicapped children in Kenya. Eric, Tracy and Simon Hagman founded Heshima, meaning dignity. They are educating and ministering to what locals call “devil” children. Eric erected an apartment building next to the school to move mothers and special needs children to a safe place.

“Now to me, these are famous people,” Nancy wrote. “They have proved to have a good reputation, are renowned for blessing people and are sometimes celebrated, as we were for our 60th anniversary. We were made famous, or let’s say, we had our moment of fame, on a flight to reunite with these famous people.”

Readers should be familiar with

the Brydges’ success story through periodic updates in the Press. The longtime Birchwood residents helped establish the faith-based children’s center about 27 years ago, and proudly acknowledge the hundreds of students who have graduated through its onsite school. Some children are orphaned or abandoned, some have parents who are too ill to care for them and others come from abusive or otherwise unsuitable home environments.

Located outside Nairobi, the Brydges Centre school has become known as a place of quality education.

Even local Maasai chiefs expressed interest in sending their own children there. The center agreed, on the condition that young girls be allowed to receive the same education as their male peers.

Mock interviews

M

ore than 50 local business owners, professionals, Rotarians, and retired adults volunteered their time to be part of mock interviews with 9th and 10th grade students. What an experience. As I walked into the new high school it felt safe and secure. I entered the huge cafeteria, which has a stadium-like feel with architecture that gave way to natural light. The large open ceiling has newly installed saillike features that most likely help to dampen sound. It reminded me of the Denver airport minus the baggage. As I made my way to the 3rd floor I walked past private-entrance bathrooms, just like I experienced in Europe when I was on J-term in college. The classroom entrance was an open lecture hall with offshoots of teaching space. It was explained to me that the open space is like a lake and the offshoots are like the bays on a lake. The large windows and natural light were welcoming. Teachers share a private, common office behind a locked door.

I sat at a tiny mobile desk which gives flexibility for the desks to be configured in a circle, or other ways. The teachers are able to Publisher’s square, use an intergrated mic and speaker system. It is a much more modern and welcoming space View than what it had been when I attended the high Carter Johnson school. It looks like a productive way to teach.

As the mock interviews started each one of the students walked up and greeted me with a smile and a handshake. We began with some basic questions and I learned general details about them such as where they live, pets, and hobbies. One student discussed building a late-model Honda Accord with his dad. Another student was a refugee and is looking forward to serving in the Marines one day. The students I interviewed were sharp as I asked questions about challenges they have overcome, and what type of environment they like to work in. I asked them how they felt about the new modern classroom layout. The overall feeling was that the new spaces are outstanding; one student said it was a little loud for him during testing. They asked me about my job too, whether I liked it, and if the pay was worthwhile.

Many thanks go out to the teachers and staff who brought the community and students together. My conclusion from this experience volunteering at the high school and meeting students is that there is discipline, respect and a desire to learn. I challenge readers and community members who want to know more about what is happening in our local schools to volunteer in the classroom as opportunities arise, or attend school activities, productions and athletic events.

New terms

Please help us welcome the newly elected officials in our communities and boards. If you have concerns or challenges that you would like to see your elected officials address, reach out and get to know them. Talk with them or attend some of the work sessions that happen before the traditional board meetings. These elected positions can be challenging, and are often thankless.

There have been several recent reports of unusual predators in the area, from coyotes to large cat-like animals.

Although the DNR has not confirmed the presence of large cats, the coyotes are around. According to the DNR the mating season for coyotes is Jan. through Feb., and this is when they tend to be the most aggressive and on the move.

Sightings have been reported in populous, residential areas.

We have heard coyotes in the evenings. One night they were so loud a neighbor came over to make sure our two dogs were safe. A few days ago we spotted a couple of healthy ones around 7 a.m. about 20 yards off of the Lake Avenue Trail. At one point they seemed to be watching a photographer who was taking photos of an owl. One night last November when my son was home alone and let our dogs outside, he reported seeing a German Shepherd-looking dog standing in our yard that didn't really act like a dog and didn't have an owner present.

According to the Minnesota DNR, most coyotes will avoid humans and domestic animals, but will occasionally raid garbage cans or kill cats and small dogs. Such incidents are more likely to occur if a coyote has become accustomed to humans or after being fed by humans. They recommend locking up all garbage and other food sources outside and either kenneling pets or watching them at all times when they are outside. We have enjoyed observing the red fox, deer, and other wildlife and waterfowl along the Lake Avenue trail, and I'm concerned they, too, are at risk with the presence of coyotes. Strong literacy foundation key to academic tenacity and success

he 2022-23 school year marked a pivotal time for growth and progress in our school district. Our strategic plan was unanimously adopted by the Mahtomedi School Board, and it both builds on recent achievements and sets the course for the future. The plan advances our strong foundation of rigorous academics and real-world skills for students, and it calls for us to provide exceptional learning experiences to grow students' capacity to Movers & drive their and Shakers learning follow their passions.

Barb Duffrin Central to this strong academic foundation for students is our comprehensive approach to literacy improvement through the implementation of the Science of Reading. Mahtomedi Public Schools launched its journey with the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) professional development coursework with a small group of teacher leaders in 2018. Currently, all of our elementary school teachers are engaged in some level of LETRS learning or

implementation. LETRS, one of the three state-approved professional development programs, deepens a teacher’s understanding of how a child’s brain learns to read while teachers learn research-based strategies to provide explicit and systematic instruction in reading skills that are essential for all students, and particularly important for students with reading difficulties and characteristics of dyslexia. Our investment in instructional and professional development in literacy extends to Mahtomedi High School, where our reading intervention students receive explicit instruction in phonics, comprehension, and fluency. The high-school level intervention engages students in their learning and helps them build the skills that will help them succeed in their other classes and in post-secondary pursuits.

Mahtomedi Public Schools is committed to ensuring our literacy improvements are comprehensive and lasting, and as such we have established a district-level Science of Reading Implementation committee that will oversee and guide the system-wide work that needs to be done to support shifts in literacy instruction. The group has used the district’s strategic plan components to establish a district vision and roadmap for literacy improvement. In addition, both elementary

schools have established building-level implementation teams that will oversee and support the daily work that comes with changing schedules, different assessments, and new curriculum resources.

A highly skilled reader becomes a confident learner who can access complex material using higher-level critical thinking skills. I am writing in response to the recent letter to the editor written by Terry Nyblom, “Don’t tell me I hate children,” where he criticizes Sen. Gustafson’s priorities on education.

I’m a retired educator, and after the last legislative session, I can finally say the state is moving in the right direction with full funding for public education, which means funding is now tied to the cost of living. We have yet to really see the long-term results of what fully funding our schools will mean to our students but expect to see continual improvements with some of the changes being implemented.

I was proud of Sen. Gustafson for championing free breakfast and lunch for all students. There have been many studies that point to the fact that hungry kids can’t focus and learn. If it’s costing more money for the program, that must mean we’re feeding more kids and giving them better capacity for learning.

The stigma associated with free and reduced lunch is eliminated since the program is universal. Every family can benefit from this.

Low test scores are a concern that our legislators are trying to address.

There is not a single solution to how kids learn, but giving them additional tools, such as nutritious meals and fully funded education, is a good start. Funding from the 2023 legislative session went toward expanding early childhood education, mental health support, resources like books and librarians (some districts have been cutting librarians due to lack of funding), smaller class sizes, recruitment strategies to hire more teachers, pay for teacher’s aides, tax breaks for teachers (many teachers purchase classroom supplies from their own funds), and other support for our teachers. I trust Sen. Gustafson, an educator herself, to continue to advocate for teachers and students.

Rita Kelly

(nee Marking)

Age 87, of White Bear Lake, passed away quietly on January 26, 2024. Born in Cross Plaines, WI, she went to Chicago to study nursing. She graduated in 1958 and earned her BSN in 1986. She met her future husband, Bill, while in nursing school and married him in September 1958. They lived in the Chicago area, where they had four of their five children, until the family was transferred to Minnesota and settled in White Bear Lake, where the fifth child was born. She was an active member at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church and other community organizations, including the Minnesota Nurses Association and TRIAD. Rita loved to travel and was a theater and concert enthusiast. She will be remembered for her acts of service and dedication to her family, church, and friends. She is survived by her children, Bill Jr, Sheila, Kevin (Dorice), Tim, Lisa (Ben) Meyer; her grandchildren, Justin, Emilie (Nick), Hannah, Abby and Erin; her great grandchildren, Graham and Eloise; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; granddaughter, Sarah; parents, Martin and Margaret Marking; and her siblings, Jerome, Edward and Jeanette. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 9 at St. Mary of the Lake Church, 4741 Bald Eagle Ave. with visitation one hour prior. PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEF Tattoo artist pleads guilty to involvement in theft of human body parts Matthew R. Lampi, an East Bethel resident and owner of Get to the Point Tattoo located in the Wildwood Shopping Center in White Bear Lake, has agreed to plead guilty to charges of interstate transport of stolen goods in U.S. District Court in Pennsylvania. Sentencing has yet to be scheduled.

As previously reported in the Press, Lampi was part of a nationwide network of individuals who circulated human remains — including heads, brains, hearts, and skin — from both Harvard Medical School and a mortuary in Arkansas.

Lampi was one of the conspirators that kept in contact with Jeremy Pauley, 41, a buyer and seller of human remains originating from a mortuary and crematorium in Little Rock, Arkansas. Lampi and Pauley bought and sold from each other over an extended period of time and exchanged over $100,000 in online payments.

3. CLAIMS ARISING UNDER EXECUTORY CONTRACTS AND UNEXPIRED LEASES. If you are a party to an executory contract or unexpired lease with the Debtors and assert a claim for amounts accrued pursuant to such executory contract or unexpired lease and unpaid as of the Petition Date, you must file a proof of claim for such amounts on or before the applicable Bar Date, unless an exception in Section 2 otherwise applies.

If, in addition, you hold a claim that arises from the rejection of an executory contract or unexpired lease, you must file a proof of claim based on such rejection on or before the Rejection Damages Bar Date.

If you believe the information is incorrect, you may cross out that information and write in the correct information prior to submitting the Proof of Claim Form.

If you file a proof of claim, your filed Proof of Claim Form must (i) be in writing and signed by the claimant or, if the claimant is not an individual, by an authorized agent of the claimant; (ii) include supporting documentation or, if voluminous, a summary of supporting documents and an explanation as to why documentation is not available and identify where such supporting documentation may be obtained; (iii) be in English; (iv) be denominated in United States currency; and (v) conform substantially with Official Form 410.

Each proof of claim asserting a Section 503(b)(9) Claim must also: (i) include the value of the goods delivered to and received by the Debtors in the twenty (20) days prior to the Petition Date; (ii) attach documentation identifying the particular invoices corresponding to the asserted Section 503(b)(9) Claim; and (iii) attach documentation demonstrating that the goods were received by the Debtors within the 20 days preceding the Petition Date.

If you file a proof of claim and wish to receive a file-stamped receipt copy by return mail, you must include with your Proof of Claim Form an additional copy of your Proof of Claim Form and a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope.

Some counties, cities struggle to find election judges

On Election Day, there can be as many as 30,000 election judges temporarily employed at polling places across Minnesota. Finding qualified applicants has become a bit of a challenge for many counties and cities.

Election judges are temporary, paid employees of local election officials trained to handle all aspects of voting at the polling place. The opportunity allows judges to learn about elections while serving their communities.

In Lino Lakes, the number of election judges seems to be down from past major election years, but there isn’t a huge cause for concern just yet. City Clerk Jolleen Chaika says that so far, the city has received around 61 applications. She said she has the number of judges she needs to staff the polling locations in the city for the presidential nominating primary on March 5 and the state primary on Aug. 13, due to historically lower voter turnout than on election day in November.

“I would like to see additional election judges for the primaries; life happens, and sometimes folks need to step down at the last minute,” she explained.

“I will certainly need many more for the November election. I would like to see at least double what I have now for Nov. 5.”

Chaika guesses one factor that could be impacting election judge numbers is safety. “One concern I’ve had heard from several former election judges is that they have decided to no longer participate as election judges because they’re concerned for their safety due to the current state of politics nationwide, especially leading into a presidential election year,” she explained.

In Washington County, it is also becoming more difficult to find election judges. In an effort to “show appreciation” and attract more judges, the county has increased the election judge pay.

“To remain competitive in recruiting and ensure judges return to work for future elections, the county board has increased the election judge pay in a proactive move to show appreciation for the hard work of past and future election judges,” explained Christie Piskura, taxpayer services and elections division manager. “The purpose of the increased wages is to align Washington County’s election judge pay rates with those of other metro areas.” The increase will be in effect for elections this year.

Piskura says that going into 2024, Washington

County has adequate staffing for the presidential primary but will need more for what is expected to be a “highly engaged” general election in November.

“Our priority is to grow our election judge applicants,” she said.

Hugo City Clerk Michele Lindau says she still needs judges for all of the elections in 2024. For the presidential nominating primary, the city of Hugo needs 24 full-time judges to staff the city’s six precincts. For the general election, the city will need closer to 60 judges (about four of them full-time judges). “(Finding judges has) been tough with snowbirds and winter breaks,” Lindau explained. “Many of my judges are dedicated and come back to work every election, and I really appreciate that.”

Lindau is hoping she can find some judges who are still considered trained from the last election, but the city also plans to share the news of the city’s need for election judges in the city newsletter and on social media.

Perhaps Ramsey County is the outlier. According to the county’s election office, the county is seeing its “highest interest ever” in residents who would like to serve as an election judge.

Depending on the year, Ramsey County requires around 1,200 to 1,700 election judges to properly staff its polling places. Since 2019, the county has had a waitlist for every election of 200 to 500 people who are interested in being election judges.

Many cities in Ramsey County, including White Bear Lake and Shoreview, have turned to the county to help manage elections.

“One of the reasons for contracting with the county was because it was getting more difficult to recruit election judges, especially head judges,” said Renee Eisenbeisz, Shoreview assistant city manager. “We believe this was due to the increasing complexity of election activities and the fact that the national political landscape is becoming more divisive. Both of these combined meant increased responsibilities and expectations for judges.”

Eisenbeisz added that it was also difficult to maintain the required party balance at each polling place required by state statute.

“Ramsey County contracts with almost every city for election services, so they have a vast network of election judges that they can move around the county based on needs,” she explained.

So, who can be an election judge? You must be eligible to vote in Minnesota and able to read, write and speak English. Students 16 and 17 years of age

can be election judge trainees.

There are restrictions on having relatives serve together as election judges. (A relative is defined as a spouse, parent, stepparent, child, stepchild, sibling or stepsibling.) Relatives cannot serve together in the same precinct at the same time. In addition, relatives of a candidate, and anyone who temporarily or permanently lives in the same house as a candidate, cannot serve in the precinct where the candidate is on the ballot.

Election judges can choose to volunteer or be paid, and wages vary by city. More experienced election judges, such as head judges, usually earn more than entry-level election judges. Training, which takes about two hours, is required.

Grant resident’s first mystery inspired by experience

“Quite a few years ago when we were living near the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, I became close friends with Janet Quale, a librarian who encouraged me to write mysteries,” said Judith Johnson. “This caught my interest.”

Johnson, a Mahtomedi native, has lived in Grant for the last 33 years with her husband, Jack. She has taught art in public schools, graphic design at the University of Minnesota and a popular creative mystery writing course for several years in the College for Kids program at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls called “It Was a Dark and Stormy Night.”

Recently, she published her first mystery called “Death Upon the Wicked Stage,” which is about a community theater troupe putting on a musical at the St. Paul Como

Lakeside Pavilion. The play in the book is called “Snow Boat,” and the novel follows a group of actors as they are being targeted by a serial killer.

Johnson says that since she is retired and has a background in art, she has had time to paint. She paints mostly landscapes and her “eye” as an artist has helped her to better describe things visually in her writing.

“I have been in the summer musicals at Como Park since 1981, first with my kids, and now with my kids and grandkids,” Johnson said. “I wrote this mystery because I love a good mystery novel myself, and I was inspired by the wonderful people I have worked with in these shows through the years.”

Johnson began writing when she was attending Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, where she received an art education degree.

Her husband, who was working

there at the time, had some literary friends who encouraged her to write. She began writing poetry. Her work can even be found in a couple of poetry anthologies.

“I was actively involved with the Loft Literary Center in the 1970s and I was on their first board of directors,” noted.

In addition to her first mystery novel, Johnson wrote and illustrated a book of Finnish folktales called “Troll Tales.”

“I would like to thank my husband and my daughter, Anne, for their editorial help. I could not have done this book without them!” Johnson said.

“Death Upon the Wicked Stage” was published by Kismet Mysteries and went on bookstore shelves at the end of December. It can be purchased online as an e-book or as a hard copy at Barnes & Noble.

Team scoring at Battle Creek Park in St. Paul was Hastings 476, Mahtomedi 458, Two Rivers 447, St. Thomas 365, Tartan 315 and Simple 307. Albrecht, a sophomore, and Vipond, a junior, placed 1-2 in the classic race and 2-3 in the skate race behind Josiah Trost of Hastings. Albrecht’s total

time was 33:48, followed by Trost with 34:12 and Vipond with 34:28. Mahtomedi’s top five also included William MacChesney in 11th place, Zhenglong Schlechte 15th, and Tim Schussler 17th, all getting honorable mention to allMEC. Conditions were poor with the temperature around 43 degrees.

BOYS HOCKEY

Mahtomedi took an 8-1 drubbing from St. Thomas Academy while winning two other conference games. The host Cadets (13-6-2) got two goals each from Michael Mikan, Will Dosan and Jimmy Zavarol in beating the Zephyrs (10-11).

The Zephyrs won 4-1 over Two Rivers (15-5) with goals by Egan, Winston Wright (power play), Max Strecker and Jake Hodd-Chlebeck (empty-net). Wes Strub, goalie, stopped 23 of 24 shots.

Roseville/Mahtomedi closed the regular season with a 4-2 win at Rogers, scoring three goals in the first period. They took a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Addison Andre (power play), Ruby Eskin and Victoria Nelson (power play). Rogers (10-15) pulled within 3-2 on goals by Alexa Sherf and Justice Ohlgren. Andre scored again at 6:03 of the third period for a two-goal lead. Lily Peterfeso, R/M goalie, stopped 29 of 31 shots. The Marauders will take a 17-8 record into Section 5AA starting Saturday.

North St. Paul tripped Mahtomedi 75-63, after which the Zephrys (810) downed Hill-Murray 60-51, their fifth win in six games. Ben Carlson pumped in 33 points in the loss to North (6-10). The senior wing was 13-for-19 on field goals, 6-for-10 on free shots, and made five steals and four assists. Micah Schmidt snagged 14 rebounds and scored eight points. The Polars were led by Duke King with 25 points. Against Hill-Murray (6-11), the

Zephyrs trailed 27-24 at halftime but finished strong, led by Schmidt with 21 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Carlson had 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Mahtomedi picked up its 37th and 38th consecutive conference wins last week. The Zephyrs routed North St. Paul 86-24, led by Ella Kletti with 18 points, Anna Greene 15 points and seven rebounds, Ella Prose 11 points, and Ella Frazier and Grace Prose 10 points each. Aniya Bradford had nine points and 11 rebounds for North (413). The Zephyrs tripped Hill-Murray 69-47. Greene had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Delaney Dumermuth 12 points and six rebounds, and Kletti 12 points and four assists. Mya Wilson sank 16 points and Elisa Groppoli 14 for the Pioneers (10-10). CLERK’S CORNER – Greetings from the Township! January has come and gone and left weather akin to what we are used to in Minnesota. From the Sheriff’s office, PLEASE use caution on frozen lakes and ponds! This year has seen an unprecedented number of rescues across the State, and I suspect that will continue as we freeze and thaw off and on until spring.

The Township has implemented some new requirements that we all will need to adhere to as the seasons change to green up.

GRANT OPPORTUNITY FOR TOWNSHIP HOMEOWNERS – Have you had issues with your sanitary sewer service line such as tree roots and/or deteriorating service line (pipe) condition causing sewer backups?

In 2024, Township property owners have an opportunity to receive up 50% of the cost (with a maximum of $5,000) in financial assistance through a grant administered by the Township. Property owners can contact a water and sewer contractor of their choice* to evaluate, for a fee, the service line and provide a quote to repair/ replace the line. The evaluation work (cleaning and televising) can be included as a reimbursement expense provided the property owner completes the repair/ replacement following the evaluation.

A permit will need to be obtained from the Township. The 50% reimbursement (up to $5,000) will be paid directly to the contractor, by the Township, once they have submitted a copy of the homeowner’s invoice to the Township. The contractor will invoice the property owner the balance of the amount due.

Grants will be on a first come, first serve basis, until the total grant amount of $40,000 provided by the Metropolitan Council of Environmental Services (MCES) is exhausted. Please check with the Township on the balance of the grant funding if you are making your decision to move forward with the repair/replacement based upon 50% (up to $5,000) grant assistance.

First graders in Ms. Gaddini’s class at Vadnais Heights Elementary are learning about igloos and the shelter they provide in colder weather climates. As part of their lesson, students collected milk jugs to build their own igloo in their classroom.

Otter Lake Elementary kicked off their school-wide Reading Rodeo event. Students participated in themed activities such as enjoying a book in the Reading Ranch, listening to guest readers, learning to western line dance, and sharing their favorite books from home.

Magnuson Christian School will have an open house Tuesday, Feb. 13 at two times – from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The Christian school is now enrolling students in grades K-8.

About $20 million — That’s what Liberty Classical Academy (LCA) will need to accomplish its vision of one single campus it can call home.

LCA leases space at the Church of St. Pius X in White Bear Lake.

Two years ago, it purchased Withrow Elementary School, located at 10158 122nd St. N in Hugo, and built an approximately 2,000-square-foot addition.

As part of Phase 1, the school was remodeled, the front entrance was redone, a new playground was installed, and over 80 acres of land was purchased.

“What I’m most excited about in being able to build up this

classroom addition (wing 1); three fully equipped science labs; stage and dedicated choir, band and art rooms; gym, weight room and locker rooms; and a soccer field.

Future additions could include the chapel, more athletic fields, auditorium, library, dining hall, gathering spaces, coffee shop, classroom additions (wings 2 and 3) and the Liberty Commons Complex.

According to Hagstrom, $20 million is needed for the expansion. In order to begin construction this summer and be ready for the fall of 2025, she says the school needs to raise $12 million by May 15; $6 million has already been raised. The class of 2026, Liberty seniors, could graduate from the new facility on the Hugo campus. City Planner Rachel Juba said LCA’s application for the expansion is not yet complete, but will likely go before the City Council for action in March or April for formal approval.

“Over the next many years, pieces of this plan will be completed one at a time as fundraising allows,” she said.

“This building will bolster retention, as well as drawing new students of every age … Phase II at Hugo represents a significant step to bring all of Liberty’s facilities up to the level of our academic program.”

whole campus is allowing our students to have a place that they can call home,” said Headmaster and Founder Rebekah Hagstrom.

“They are not going to have to go off site to practice their sports.

They are going to be able to be in a science lab. They are going to be able to worship in a chapel that is right here on site.”

LCA was founded in 2003 with just 28 students. In 2015, the school had 160 students, and now in 2024, there are 470 students in preschool through 12th grade.

“Liberty has been very successful over the last 20 years.

But this is the dawning of a new era for Liberty Classical Academy,” Hagstrom explained.

“Our team has prayerfully put together a God-sized vision that is going to house the generations of Liberty Lions to come. A school of our age and maturity needs to have its own campus in order to sustain the future, and to not be dependent on outside forces.

Furthermore, the next phase of Liberty’s development will provide for our students in ways that we’ve never been able to do before.”

Per Liberty’s long-term master plan, the 80-plus acres in Hugo will see a relocated grand entrance drive off of 122nd Street that leads to the Liberty Commons Complex with a chapel.

The plan also includes classroom wings, athletic fields, a varsitysized gym, full-size stage and band, choir and art rooms.

White Bear Lake native Gen. Paul Nakasone retired on Feb. 1 after serving as Commander, U.S. Cyber Command, and Director, National Security Agency/ Chief, Central Security Service since May, 2018. He previously commanded U.S. Army Cyber Command from Oct. 2016 through April, 2018. Nakasone, a 1982 graduate of White Bear Lake High School, was inducted into the school’s Wall of Fame in 2021.

Plum, in the hall, with the clarinet

Simon Plum says the program, “In Good Company,” promises “to be fun and exciting for everyone,” and follows a “unique musical journey.”

Unlike a certain board game character, Simon Plum is concerned with the living— composers, that is. He’ll be the featured soloist in the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (MSO) Feb. 11 program at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi, guest conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Stirling.

“The second work, by Spanish composer Oscar Navarro, is his second Concerto for clarinet and orchestra,” Plum explains. “It is cinematic and dramatic, featuring music inspired by the Flamenco traditions of southern Spain.” The reason Plum is being featured now is because he is the winner of the MSO internal competition.

“It speaks to the depth of musicianship in our sections. Plum is a not principal player, yet he won this contes,!” Lena Cicha, an MSO cellist from Shoreview,

exclaims. “Every player in this orchestra holds up their end of the bargain.” Cicha also appreciates the Navarro piece because, while it certainly features a clarinetist, it doesn’t forget about the rest of the orchestra.

“In concertos, sometimes, the orchestra plays a supporting role, and we’re not heard.

What’s cool about Navarro is that there’s equal orchestration. This piece isn’t a step back; it’s a partnership with Simon.”

That partnership also includes musical pieces that take advantage of every instrumental section. “It’s a fantastic program,” touts Mahtomedi violist John Middleton. “One thing that does happen, the parts that composers write get more complex through history. As instruments evolved and orchestras grew in size, modern composers took advantage of what each instrument can do.” Middleton cites this reason for why the MSO tries to do living composers during every program. “They’re

really exciting pieces not done as often,” he says.

Regarding ability, Plum says, “The work is complex and difficult, but the orchestra makes it sound easy.” Plum is especially grateful to his colleagues, referring to them as “some of the best musicians in the area.”

“The area” is why MSO is choosing to perform in Mahtomedi. “This is our big concert in the east Metro,” Middleton explains. Our name illustrates that we go all over. It’s intentional because we have members from all over the metro, so we cultivate audiences all over the metro.”

Cicha feels this concert has a bigger draw than its locale. “It’s free to the public,” She emphasizes. “It’s low risk to find something new you might like, but leave transformed.”

The Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra performs at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in their Great Hall on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 3 p.m. Admission is free.

Why do we have fish fries during Lent?

For Christians, Lent is a season of solemnity, where people practice self-denial and atonement.

Lent is the period leading up to Easter when Christians commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

So how do all-you-can-eat fish fries at local restaurants, Legions and VFWs and churches fit into it?

Traditionally, a fish fry is strongly associated with the Roman Catholic community, but churches and organizations of all denominations—or none— have participated.

The ritual of fasting during the Lenten season dates to the first century CE. The practice has changed quite a bit over the centuries. It originally started as a fast and was eventually established as a 40-day abstinence from the meat of warm-blooded animals. This form of penance was meant to recognize the suffering and forbearance of Christ’s 40 days in the desert while he was tested by the devil.

This year’s Lenten season will begin Feb. 14 and last until March 28.

Fish fries are also a way to celebrate Midwestern roots, since many places in Minnesota and Wisconsin were settled by German and Polish Catholics who did not typically eat meat on Fridays.

Proximity to freshwater lakes means that a fish fry might feature fresh walleye, bass, perch, bluegill or even catfish, in addition to a more widespread choice such as cod and tilapia.

Press Publications has compiled a list of fish fries in the northeast metro where you can find your own Lenten meal, whether you are religious or not.

Many local restaurants also offer fish fry meals at this time of year.

When the legislature reconvenes on Feb. 12, there will be a lot of work that needs to be done to secure the future of our state.

Last session, the state held a historic $17.5 billion surplus. Democrats not only spent all of it, but also raised taxes by $10 billion as they pushed spending even higher. Your hard-earned tax dollars grew our state government by an astonishing 40%. Family budgets are already stretched thin by the rising cost of living, and now life is becoming even more expensive as these additional tax hikes begin to take effect.

As we kick off 2024, it’s time to start focusing on the upcoming legislative session and the issues that will be the top priorities. Since 2024 is a bonding year, that will be the main focus of session. Because of that, there are two key priorities I’d like to see the legislature focus on: addressing the deficit in a fiscally responsible way, and prioritizing local-level bonding projects.

The November Forecast was released at the end of last year and it confirmed that Minnesota is barreling towards a deficit. Heading into 2023, our state had a historic surplus, and now we find ourselves on the opposite side of that.

Democrats spent much of last session funding their projects in unsustainable ways. Because of that, we’re seeing the costs of these projects increasing above what Minnesotans were promised. We are already living in a high-tax state, and under no circumstances should we make Minnesota families foot the bill for bad budgeting. Instead, I’d like to see us revisit certain projects to ensure

a bonding year. Governor Walz recently released a nearly $1 billion bonding proposal, but there are few details on how much will be designated to local projects. We must ensure that our local infrastructure needs are prioritized in the final bonding bill.

Minnesotans want to see the state acting as a good steward of their tax dollars. They want to see more of their money going towards fixing roads and bridges in their community. They also want to see less wasteful government spending, like the extravagant $730 million renovation and expansion of the State Office Building to create a palace for politicians. We can meet the needs of our communities while still supporting family budgets. I look forward to addressing these issues next session.

We either rein in spending now or we will be debating further tax increases to pay for all these new programs.

My top priority next session will be supporting family budgets. This means rolling back that 40% increase in spending, and looking for ways to provide permanent, meaningful tax relief for Minnesotans. I will continue to push for a full exemption of social security earnings and a repeal of the new housing and transit sales tax.

I will also continue to focus on meeting the critical needs of our community. The second year of the biennium is typically

It will be my priority to support and author legislation that funds Teachers and Students within our local school classrooms instead of the bureaucratic boardrooms within MDE’s building in St. Paul. This session, I’ll be focusing on proposing legislation that helps address Minnesota’s reading and math proficiency shortfalls, our state’s widening achievement gap, COVID learning loss, and rising threats to the safety of students and teachers occurring

I’ll also introduce a comprehensive Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault response bill aimed at establishing a statewide coordinator for sexual assault nurse examiners, as well as a task force to consider potential improvements to state law. With a lack of hospitals in Greater Minnesota, many survivors are forced to drive hours for an examination, and right

we are prioritizing taxpayer dollars in the best and most responsible way possible.

Since it’s a bonding year, many communities will be vying for support from the legislature. These years typically allow us to focus on smaller projects that address local needs throughout the state. I’d like to see funding focused on key projects that address everyday necessities for Minnesotans such as crumbling roads and failing wastewater systems.

We also passed bonding legislation last year, which included numerous investments throughout the state.

Because of the bonding projects we’ve funded throughout the last few years, I’m hopeful that means we can rein in the spending a bit more for the upcoming session. Some of these smaller communities have also felt overlooked in previous years, and they are looking to us for guidance and assistance – I’m hopeful we can come together to address those various needs.

We have a lot of work ahead of us this year, but I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to come together to address infrastructure concerns, make needed investments, and address the deficit.

End the violent crime epidemic

Every Minnesotan deserves to live in a safe community. With three straight years of record-setting violent crime, more must be done to ensure Minnesotans are protected from unchecked violence. I’ll be introducing and supporting legislation to end the revolving-door of crime enabled by activism from prosecutors and judges who purposefully fail to enforce state law. I’ll also be working on legislation that provides mental health supports for first responders, assists local units of government in recruiting public safety officers through state bonus incentives, and reforms our juvenile crime rehabilitation methods.

Finally, I plan to offer a tax credit that guarantees a minimum salary for every public school teacher in Minnesota. Our educators sacrifice so much to make sure our children have a bright future, and it’s time to pay them what they deserve.

I’m already working closely with city and county officials to make sure that our local needs are taken seriously and reflected in the final capital investment bill.

Annually, the Twin Cities metro area recycles an average of 900,000 tons of paper and cardboard, metal, glass and plastic. That is enough recyclables each year to equal the weight of about four large cruise ships.

Six metro counties are working together to restore trust in Minnesota’s recycling system after questions about what happens to recycling after it leaves homes have been increasing over the years.

Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington counties want residents to know that recycling is real and it works.

In Minnesota, recycled items become new

Mahtomedi capped its 16th consecutive unbeaten dual meet season with a home victory over Tartan, 130.825 to 72.025. Tartan’s lineup was depleted by illness.

Top all-arounders were Alix Fox (33.975), Natalie Eisenhuth (32.975) and Margo Bruner (32.425). Fox and Eisenhuth (8.450) tied for first on vault, followed by Bruner (8.300)

and Addison Briske (8.250). Fox (8.125) won bars, followed by Eisenhuth (8.025), Lily Bush (7.650) and Bruner (7.550). Bruner won (8.600) with Fox (8.300) second and Eisenhuth (7.950) third. Fox won floor (9.15) with Eisenhuth second (8.550) and Tartan’s Josilyn Hughes (8.025) third. Mahtomedi was 6-0 in duals this year. In coach Debbie Driscoll’s long tenure, they have a 322-19 record. White Bear Lake girls hockey will take a 1410-2 record into Section 4AA, marking their first winning season since 2017-18 and a jump of five

wins over last year.

The Bears won their conference finale 2-0 over Park and then lost to Osseo/Park Center 3-2, both at home.

They were 7-8-1 in the Suburban East for sixth place of nine teams.

Stillwater was champ at 14-1-1. In the section, the Bears are seeded fourth and will host Gentry Academy on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Against Park (8-16), senior goalie Gabriela Casa de Calvo made 28 saves in the shutout.

Scoring were Amanda Smythe (power play, assisted by Grace Bailey) and Lyla Beck (assisted

by Madelyn Lee), the freshman defender’s first varsity goal.

Osseo/Park Center (9-13-3) got 37 saves by Alli Olson to stymie the Bears. Smith and Ava Johnson scored for the Bears, the latter with 39 seconds left and the goalie pulled.

After starting the boys basketball season 0-12, White Bear Lake has garnered three wins in the last six games. Last week, the Bears defeated Woodbury 59-46 after losing to Forest Lake 72-60.

The Bears held Woodbury (9-11) to its lowest total of the season and reversed an earlier 72-52 loss to the Royals. Rithy Sain netted 14 points, Gavin Krenz 11, Thomas Cusciotta nine, and Sawyer Collins and Colin Piper eight each.

In a 78-63 win over Irondale, Cusciotta sank 26 points, Piper 12, and Anthony Turner and Korey Raheem eight apiece.

End of an Era

The final high school game in the south campus gym will be held Feb. 21 against Stillwater. An End of an Era celebration will be held, coach Aaron Turner announced. “We are trying to pack the stands and get community members out,” he said. “Our booster club has some things they are putting together.”

Basketball will move to the new north campus gym next year.

White Bear Lake went 3-0 at a Roseville quadrangular, including a win over Roseville for a final 7-3 record in the Suburban East. The Bears are 13-7 overall with one home quad left. At Roseville, the Bears defeated Burnsville 61-8, Fridley 53-18 and Roseville 45-26. Posting 3-0 records were Tristen Moen at 114, Vin Nathanson at 121, Christian Carlson at 133, Gabe Kessel at 139, Porter Cleary at 160, Charlie Woodcock at 189 and Joe Volk at 215. Going 2-1 were Logan Arends at 127, Jackson Newton at 152, and Zach Carnes at 285. They placed third of 16 teams in a tournament at South St. Paul. Carlson was 133-pound champion, going 3-0, capped by a 9-3 finals win over Kyler Jubinal of Park. Woodcock and Carnes were runners-up and Nathanson placed third, each going 2-1. Placing fourth were Gabe Kessel and Porter Cleary. Carlson has a 34-8 record, Nathanson 25-11, Cleary 25-15, Woodcock 25-15, Kessel 23-15, and Kesean Lipscomb 22-13.

White Bear Lake will have two female entrants in a regional tournament Saturday at Redwood Valley: Jinet Demanou (12-7) and Calli Lacktorin (16-15), both sophomores. In the 26-team Eau Claire North Invitational, Demanou placed second at 165 pounds, and Lacktorin placed ninth at 118 pounds.

White Bear Lake, still leading the Suburban East by three games, beat Forest Lake 69-43 and Woodbury 63-47. The Bears, ranked No. 10 in Class 4A, are 17-5 overall and 13-1 in the SEC. Against Forest Lake (1010), Jordyn Schmittdiel sank 20 points, Addi Post 13, Heidi Barber 11 and Sarah Poepard 10. Against Woodbury (10-10), Schmittdiel logged 27 points (shooting 12-for21), 12 rebounds and five steals.

Barber added 10 points, Post nine and Abby O’Brien eight. Cami Bachmeier made five assists.

Neither team had anyone score more than 10 points against the Bears.

BOYS HOCKEY

White Bear Lake lost nonconference games to Eden Prairie and Centennial while holding their share of the Suburban East lead beating Roseville Area 5-3. The Bears (14-5-1 overall) are 11-1 in conference, the same as Stillwater. Scoring against Roseville (6-12-1) were Tyler Lalonde, Nolan Roed, Kevin Laska, Maverick Timmons and Tanner Olsen. Roed assisted on three goals. Eden Prairie (14-5-1), ranked No. 7, stymied the Bears 5-1 with Cale Saterdalen drilling three goals. Dylan Bestow scored for the Bears, who were outshot 28-16. In a duel of conference leaders, Centennial of the Northwest Suburban edged the host Bears 2-1 with goalie Easton Cody making 39 saves. Roed scored for the Bears, who outshot the Cougars 40-21. Alex Clampitt’s power-play goal at 15:15 of the third period was the game winner for Centennial.

With two leaders hobbled by injuries, White Bear Lake’s season “has not panned out as I had hoped,” coach Doug Cran said. A depleted boys team placed last while the girls were sixth of seven teams in the Suburban East meet at Battle Creek Park. Sixthyear starter Ian Cran broke his thumb during soccer and could not ski until just before winter break. Andrew Klier, a junior who led the team last year, fractured his ankle early and could not ski until last week. A string of recent illnesses further reduced the lineup. Tanner Hoel, a senior, placed 18th in the pursuit. In the sprint relays, Cran and junior Isaac Lindholm placed sixth and seniors Evan Boxrud and Jake Weierke seventh among 14 tandems. Ami Nachtsheim, a junior, placed 18th in the girls pursuit. Hoel, Cran, Lindholm and Nachtsheim got honorable mention to all-SEC. Stillwater was team champion for both boys and girls. Next is Section 4 on Feb. 7 at Battle Creek.

White Bear Lake lost a conference dual meet to Roseville Area 99-84 at the YMCA. Event winners for the Bears (2-6) were Benedict Hoefer in the 200 freestyle (1:55.90), Calvin Weier in the 500 freestyle (5:27.19), and Brayden Kolb in backstroke (57.89). Placing second were Mason Noren in the 200 and 500 free, Calvin Weier in the IM, Anthony Parada Romero in diving, Finnian McVeigh in the butterfly and breaststroke, and Hoefer in the 100 free.
