Music center coming to Arts District corner

WHITE BEAR LAKE — The Arts District is getting a new addition as the corner of Hwy. 61 and Eighth Street sees at least its third iteration.

Construction starts summer 2022 for the McNeely Music Center, a state-of-the-art facility that will offer lessons, recording capabilities and performance space.

The downtown site, platted in 1871 as a single-family residence, has been the address for several businesses over the last 150 years.

Most recent was a 1998 Re/Max realty office that was demolished last week to make way for the center. It would have been cost prohibitive to retrofit the building to the center’s high-tech acoustic requirements, so the decision was made to bring it down.

Press archives contained a similar story when realty office’s predecessor was razed on that corner. The city lost a small piece of history, the piece read, when a wrecking crew demolished the long-vacant Doerer’s Grocery.

Mother’s Day flower collection While it was raining outside, Jake Gibbons and his mother, Shirley, were able to stay warm and dry while gathering flowers recently inside the greenhouse at Costa Farms. Gibbons, a 1st grade teacher, was getting help from his mother collecting plants that he wanted to use for a Mother’s Day project with his students. This year Mother’s Day is May 8 and does not coincide with the annual fishing opener in Minnesota, which is Saturday, May 14.

Changes to Purple Line route under consideration Plans for the proposed METRO Purple Line, a new Bus Rapid Transit line in Ramsey County, are getting another look.

Project staff are considering ending the now 15-mile line somewhere along County Road E, between Highway 61 and Interstate 35E in Vadnais Heights or at the Maplewood Mall Transit Center.

Both options would include offering connecting bus service between the Maplewood Mall Transit Center and downtown White Bear Lake. Keeping the

route as planned, with the northern end in downtown White Bear Lake, is also being evaluated.

The suggested modifications are in response to a White Bear Lake City Council resolution that requests the Purple Line not enter city limits.

Options were discussed April 29 at the Purple Line’s first Corridor Management Committee (CMC) meeting.

The committee includes elected and appointed officials from project partner

agencies and was formed to advise the Metropolitan Council and Ramsey County on the design and construction of the Purple Line.

Ramsey County Commissioner and committee member Victoria Reinhardt called the meeting “productive.”

“We discussed viable options that I believe will meet the transit needs for all partners,” she said.

Committee member Bill Walsh, a White Bear Lake council member, had

this to say: “This is really good news from the Met Council. They are listening to the citizens of White Bear Lake who don’t believe the Purple Line is a good fit for our city.”

More information and ways for the public to share feedback will be available this summer. The current timeline calls for construction to begin in 2024 and continue into 2026.

BUSINESS BRIEF Company to receive sustainability award Water Gremlin was recognized by the RadTech Association for its implementation of a solvent-free UV curable coating process for its battery terminals that results in a “significantly reduced environmental impact.” The White Bear Township company will receive a 2022 Sustainability Award during an association convention next month in

Orlando. RadTech is a nonprofit that promotes ultraviolet, electron beam and light-emitting diode technologies.

The association’s announcement said Water Gremlin intends to continue to develop UV cure technology to eventually end all usage of organic solvents for coating parts in its facility.

The company’s goal is to reduce solvent usage by 50% by end of 2022 and 80% in 2024.

Risk to public health from TCE emissions assessed WHITE BEAR TOWNSHIP — The release of excess trichlororethylene (TCE) into the air by Water Gremlin may have harmed people’s health.

That conclusion and more was released in a draft Public Health Assessment (PHA) last week from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), whose role is to evaluate health risks at sites where chemicals have been released into the environment.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) discovered in early 2019 that Water Gremlin had been spewing levels of TCE into the air for years at levels significantly higher than the state allowed. Use of the toxic chemical by the company halted in 2019, which was followed by legislation that bans most permitted uses of TCE. The ban becomes effective June 2022.

The 89-page PHA, “which is not a health study,” listed seven main conclusions. Among them: 1) past exposures to TCE in air near the facility may have harmed some people’s health; 2) past exposures may have been sufficient “to increase the risk of health effects in a small number of the most exposed individuals,” and 3) past or current use of trans-1,2-dichloroethylene (an alternative to TCE used by Water Gremlin) and lead air emissions are not expected to harm people’s health in the surrounding community. Lead exposure, however, may have harmed the health of workers and their families, according to the assessment.

People living in neighborhoods around the manufacturer are being asked to review the draft PHA, identify issues that are missing, incorrect or unclear, and share comments by June 9, 2022. Comments can be submitted by email at health.hazard@state.mn.us

A six-point action plan that describes steps the health department will take to protect the future health of the community is included in the draft. The department also promises to continue to review new data and information on the contamination and share any potential health concerns with the community.

It should also be noted that at this time, MPCA is continuing to develop a new air permit for the township facility. The purpose of the new permit is to limit emissions to meet environmental regulations and be protective of human health.

Water Gremlin watchdogs, the Neighborhood Concerned Citizens Group (NCCG), issued this statement following release of the PHA: “The list of wrongs done by Water Gremlin to the workers and community is long and it is challenging for anyone, including the MDH, to have a comprehensive list of possible harms.

“We know TCE exposure was, for many years, far above health-based values and we have evidence of more people being impacted by skin, auto-immune and respiratory issues (plus cancer) than what is suggested as part of this report. We are also surprised that the extent of child-exposure to take-home lead (more than 20 children) was absent from this report.

“NCCG will be providing comments for the official record so if something like this is ever done again by Water Gremlin, our voice is remembered.”

No Pay May

uring the month of May we celebrate many special days and holidays. There is May Day, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day. May is home to Mental Health Awareness Month and National Teacher Appreciation Week. Lesserknown celebrations such as Be Kind to Animals Day, National Pick Strawberry Day, Bike to Work Day, National Armed Forces Day, Bob Dylan’s birthday, National Tap Dance Day, and Paper Airplane Day will all be celebrated in the coming weeks.

Many years ago, our friends created “No Pay May” as a way to get their household budget in line for the year. They were starting out in their professions, recently married, living in Chicago and trying to save for a down payment on a house. No Pay May is a challenge to save money by not spending during the month of May other than for expenses that are absolutely necessary, such as rent/ mortgage, utilities, and gas to get to work. You can’t go out to lunch or dinner for an entire month, and you Publisher’s can’t even buy groceries – you eat all of the food already in your freezer View and pantry. No trips, concerts, going to movies, or other entertainment.

They were disciplined and this technique worked for them. It also cleaned out the pantry and fridge.

Amy and I tried No Pay May a couple times over the years without much success. We would stock up at the grocery store April 30 and always seemed to break down and dine out or buy something by the third week. It’s also difficult to do with kids at home. I propose every year that we drop cable TV, but it’s a battle I haven’t won.

The closest we got to a successful No Pay May was during the Covid lockdown in 2020. We didn’t go anywhere. Since groceries were a challenge to get, we cleaned out our stash of extra food and then only bought what we needed. We ate a lot of noodles and canned vegetables. A tank of gas lasted for weeks.

There wasn’t much about that time I would want to repeat, but we did see a bump in our savings account. We also came to appreciate activities that didn’t cost anything – such as taking walks, playing family games, and visiting with friends over Zoom.

And, I admit we watched a whole bunch of movies on cable.

With the rising costs of groceries, gas, utilities and other necessities, there are ways to save that aren’t as drastic as No Pay May. Shorten showers, turn down hot water heaters, turn off lights, and turn the temperature down in your house.

Unsubscribe from apps and services on your phone that have a monthly fee. Driving the speed limit can save on gas, as well as carpooling. Plan meals ahead of time to save on groceries and eat leftovers. Reuse water bottles. If you like to eat out, prioritize going to your favorite restaurants but skip the unplanned food runs in between. Set a family budget and try to be conscientious of spending. We should also be seeing warmer days ahead, so get out and enjoy the free outdoors.

Mother’s Day As we approach Mother’s Day this Sunday, May 8, take time to honor and recognize your mom, grandmother, or other special woman in your life.

A gift is always nice, or consider something special that doesn’t cost anything, such as a handwritten note or taking on a few extras like emptying the dishwasher, doing laundry, or vacuuming. Dads and kids can cook a meal for the family, or make dinner reservations. This Mother’s Day, do something to help reduce stress and recognize your mom.

Heart strings Every once in a while, as a journalist, you get a story that is really difficult to write. In this week’s paper, you will see that story about Sheridan Draz a 22-year-old veteran of the Minnesota Army National Guard who is battling for his life. In May 2021, he was diagnosed with high-grade metastatic osteosarcoma (bone cancer).

In talking to his mother, I learned that Sheridan and I have a couple of things in common. We both love cars (Volkswagens) and dogs (German shepherds).

I plan to attend Sheridan’s benefit May 7 in Hugo, and I hope you and your family will consider attending too.

Learning about all Sheridan has had to go through in the past year is absolutely heart breaking. I cannot even begin to fathom the amount of pain he has had to deal with. But one thing that he does have going for him is his bravery.

For 25 years my wife and I owned a business (Frazer Auto) approximately 30 feet from Highway 61. Most mornings my first prayer of the day was thanking God I lived five blocks away and didn’t have to start the day joining those commuters suffering their first taste of slow traffic for the morning. I’ve read with anguish about the proposed Purple Line.

We sold the business several years ago, and I decided to busy myself by doing the same thing I did as a college student. I drive a school bus on a part-time basis. I enjoyed it as a college student and I enjoy it now. Most would agree using a school bus to ferry the students back and forth to school makes a great deal of sense. My fellow drivers and I usually carry a passenger load of approximately two-thirds

capacity or more. Much can be said about the benefit of a fully utilized vehicle of this size.

The downside of any bus is obvious. They’re slow to accelerate, slow to brake and slow to corner. They often create a problem to smooth, efficient traffic flow. Now let’s add five (most likely empty) MTC vehicles per hour to the morning and evening commute in downtown White Bear Lake on Highway 61. I know we “could” take a bus, but we as independent citizens prefer a car. Let’s try that again ... we as citizens prefer a car.

I hear my neighbors’ concerns about carjackings, catalytic converter thefts, taxes, the price of groceries and more. I’ve heard no one but the politicians say we need a bus or worse, five per hour.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

Vadnais Heights

• A Byron man reported his 1997 Honda Accord stolen out of a business parking lot in the 1100 block of County Road E overnight April 12-13. At the time of the theft, an AR-15 firearm had been left in the trunk of the vehicle. After the vehicle was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, it was recovered April 15 by the St. Paul Police Department. The firearm was not recovered, however.

• A resident in the 700 block of Parkside Drive reported the garbage cans in front of her home stolen overnight April 12-13.

• A resident in the 4500 block of Birch Ridge Road on April 13 reported receiving a phone call from a party pretending to be from Xcel Energy and stating that his power would be shut off in 30 minutes if he didn’t press “1” and talk to an employee.

The complainant thought it was a scam, called Xcel directly and confirmed he didn’t owe money.

• A Little Canada woman reported the catalytic converter stolen from her Hyundai Tucson between 6-9 p.m. April 13 while it was parked in the Marshall’s lot in the 900 block of County Road E. Video surveillance from the southeast lot shows a bald male, approximately 40, getting up from under the vehicle at around 8:00 p.m. and leaving in a midsize SUV. • A St. Paul woman 23, was cited for shoplifting April 15 at the Walmart in the 800 block of County Road E after she was observed underringing merchandise at the

self-checkout and passing all points of sale. After loss prevention personnel stopped her, she was also issued a trespass notice and released from the scene.

Shortly afterward, a Fridley man, 25, was also cited for under-ringing items at the self-checkout and was escorted off the premises in similar fashion.

• A St. Paul man, 18, was cited and a St. Paul woman, 20, was arrested April 15 at the Vadnais Heights Walmart after they were reported for concealing items, passing all points of sale (including the front door) and leaving the parking lot in a vehicle.

After Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver complied when asked to return to Walmart. The driver was then arrested on two outstanding active warrants and cited for theft.

The male was cited for theft and released.

• Tousley Motorsports in the 14000 block of County Road E reported a forced-entry burglary at 2:46 a.m. April 16 in which two vehicles were stolen from the showroom floor.

• The Walmart at 11:03 p.m.

April 16 reported a female shoplifter, accompanied by two juveniles, for underringing items at the selfcheckout and passing all points of sale. As the suspects left the store, the female suspect assaulted loss prevention personnel when they tried to detain her. The suspects then pushed their cart to the parking lot, loaded items into a vehicle and left the area. The case is under investigation.

• A resident in the 700 block of Garceau Lane reported being harassed by a neighbor while walking his dog April 18. Deputies

advised the complainant on the process of filing a harassment restraining order.

• A St. Paul woman, 26, was arrested April 18 at the Walmart for robbery after she assaulted the store detective, who tried to stop her for under-ringing items in her cart. The suspect, along with the oldest of the two children accompanying her, rammed the cart into the store detective and left the premises with her two children. Charges have been filed in district court.

• A Little Canada man reported credit card fraud April 19 after he received notification that his cards were used at the Vadnais Heights Walmart and Target. The victim then realized the fraudsters didn’t have far to go to use the cards, because he had dropped his wallet while inside the Walmart. He wasted no time in canceling the cards.

White Bear Township

• Two adult males, 20 and 60, were reported stabbed by each other during an argument that also involved a juvenile at 11:02 p.m.

April 16 in the 3800 block of Effress Road. Deputies, along with White Bear Lake paramedics and White Bear Lake police, administered aid. The three parties were then transported to Regions Hospital. No one was taken into custody, but the case is under investigation.

• A business in the 2300 block of Leibel Street reported a hole cut through a fence on the premises sometime over the weekend of April 16-18 for thieves to gain access to catalytic converters on vehicles parked inside.

Thieves stole the converters off a Dodge Ram and Ford Econoline and also damaged the door handle of a trailer.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS Missing Vadnais Heights man recovered in Mississippi River The body of Alexander Westerlund, 29, of Vadnais Heights, was pulled from the Mississippi River near Denmark Township April 18. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner determined his death was suicide by drowning.

An obituary said he took his life March 9, and that he suffered

from bipolar disorder for many years. He was a 2011 graduate of Irondale High School.

• A student of Mahtomedi High School in the 8000 block of 75th Street N. on April 8 reported his wallet missing. All credit and debit cards have been canceled, and no attempts to use the cards had been reported to the bank at the time of the report.

Willernie

• An ongoing property dispute on Kimberly Avenue was reported April 9. Deputies advised both parties to stay away from each other. On April 10, deputies were again called out to this scene of a property dispute. One of the parties had recently contacted Washington County to certify a survey of the property line and had started to build a fence along the associated stake line. The property owner on the other side of the stake line parked his truck across the property line to obstruct the fence installation. When deputies advised the truck owner to move his truck off the neighbor's property, he complied without incident. However, a pop-up trailer is still staged on the property line, obstructing full construction of the fence line, and parties are currently going through civil process for the remainder of the dispute.

Sheridan’s Army: Community rallies to support hometown hero

Sheridan Draz’s future holds a lot of unknowns at this point, but his mother, Katie Draz Campbell, wants to show her son that the community will be by his side through it all.

Draz, 22, is a Minnesota Army National Guard veteran. His mother has been busy planning a benefit in his honor.

“I'm doing this to honor my son, his service and the sacrifices he's about to make with his human body. That he is loved and not forgotten,” she explained.

“Although I do want to raise funds for whatever the future brings, I want to show him that the community is there, they do care, they do appreciate him and they are going to show up.”

Draz is a 2018 graduate of Mahtomedi High School. When he was a junior in high school, he enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard. From October 2019 to October 2020, he served a tour in the Gulf War against terrorism in the Middle East. He served under the 34th ECAB Red Devils in Operation Inherent Resolve and Operation Spartan Shield.

In May 2021, a freak leg break resulted in the diagnosis of high-grade metastatic osteosarcoma (bone cancer) that had already spread. The first treatment and surgical intervention were not successful, as the cancer has continued to spread to his lungs, lymphatic system and other bones.

Fast-forward to May 2022, and Draz still has a long road ahead. He has been in and out of the hospital, undergone several rounds of chemotherapy and has had multiple surgeries.

Sheridan Draz, 22, is a Minnesota Army National Guard veteran who is currently fighting a courageous battle with bone cancer. A benefit in his honor is planned from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at the Hugo American Legion, 5383 140th Street N. Draz Campbell hopes the community will show up in droves to show their support for the young veteran May 7.

Draz is scheduled for two more rounds of chemo. He will need to have surgery on one of his lungs, recover, and then go through the same procedure on the other lung. He will also need to undergo a surgery to amputate part of his right leg; however, the decision has not yet been made on exactly what that will entail.

“We are all praying and hoping that this amputation and all of these dramatic surgical interventions are going to be his key,” Draz Campbell said.

MCNEELY MUSIC CENTER: The ‘music complement’ to Arts District FROM PAGE 1A

Owned by George and Delia Doerer for more than 40 years, the grocery store opened in 1937. Popular with neighborhood children who stopped in for candy, popsicles and ice cream, the store also had two Phillips 66 pumps out front for the convenience of adults stopping after work for gas and groceries. The couple lived upstairs, and raised three children above the store. Jantzen’s Motel, Big Ben restaurant and the White Bear Cheese Shop were nearby.

Two years in the works, the McNeely Music Center coming to the spot will be community based, said Greg McNeely, whose family is behind the Manitou Fund, the private foundation financing the center.

“We believe in music. It’s been transformational in our lives,” McNeely said.

The McNeely family has strong ties to White Bear Lake. Greg is a professional musician who founded the iconic 617 Band and Crossover.

The center will focus on three core program areas, according to Oliver Din, Manitou Fund president and CEO: private lessons, group instruction and a lower-level recording studio equipped for multimedia production.

Glass walls on the building’s west side will allow passersby to view a lobby area on the main floor, complete with a grand piano, that will double as a reception and recital area.

The location of the center purposefully ties in with the arts district, Din noted. “We’re the music complement to what already exists. We wanted that location.”

The family considers the center “a gift to the community,” McNeely said, adding the center’s purpose is to provide a way to share the experience of music and connect with others.

“Music gets in your blood and takes you to another place,” he stated. “We want to share the positivity and hope that music brings to people of any age.”

Watch for a story on the center’s grand opening as the date approaches.

A backhoe takes a major chunk out of a former realty building to make way for the new McNeely Music Center. Construction is slated to start this summer in the White Bear Lake Arts District.

When we conserve energy we are making an effort to reduce our consumption. We can conserve energy by reducing wasteful use. By turning off lights or turning down the thermometer we are conserving energy. Energy efficiency is updating systems to more efficient devices. DNR chastised for alarming cities of looming water restrictions

ST. PAUL — The district court judge in the lake lawsuit case made clear that draconian restrictions on water for municipalities near White Bear Lake was never part of her 2017 order, calling the DNR’s assertion that hospitals and schools would be cut off “misinformation.”

Judge Margaret Marrinan, who came out of retirement to preside over the decade-old case, asked attorneys at an April 26 status hearing to help draft language on the spot clarifying her order.

An attorney for the plaintiff, the White Bear Lake Restoration Association, felt time was of the essence due to pending legislation that would “eviscerate” the court order.

The judge obliged.

That legislation allows municipalities with wells within 5 miles of the lake to implement 2040 water supply plans approved by the DNR prior to 2021 and thus ignore amendments to water use permits mandated in the court order.

Attorneys for the restoration association say the Senate bill (SF3055) would “vastly undercut the DNR’s oversight of big wells” and is an unwise attack on the state’s environmental laws.

The judge iterated again and again that the 55-gallon per capita limit was not part of her order. “When I read that in the paper, my hair stood on end,” she said. “I was appalled.”

Marrinan scolded the DNR’s defense counsel for alarming municipalities that their water permits would be amended to reflect that number, cutting off non-domestic use, without bringing it to the courts first. “To say schools and hospitals won’t have water is a major disservice. An intelligent, relational person will know exactly what the response will be,” the judge stated.

Before the day ended, a clarification to her order was signed and emailed to area legislators who oppose the bill,

After the hearing, plaintiff attorney Richard Allyn, Robins Kaplan LLP, observed that the DNR was duly chastised for causing “unnecessary alarm among the cities (and township) affected by the case order.

“Judge Marrinan totally demolished any threat of a change to 55 gallons per day,” Allyn said. “Neither she nor the DNR can or will reduce the water appropriations permits below the 75 (residential) and 90 (total) gallons per day.”

The chief strategy officer for the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy wasted little time informing area legislators of the judge’s clarifying order.

“The results ought to be very helpful in combating attempts to overturn the Court Order and attack the Minnesota Environmental Rights Act,” wrote Aaron Klemz.

His advocacy group is not a party to the case but did submit amicus briefs supporting the plaintiffs at the Court of Appeals and the Minnesota Supreme Court. They also testified against legislation that would overturn the court’s decision — SF3055 and sections of SF4062.

The uproar over the 55-gallon restriction may have a positive side, continued the judge. “It got the attention of some municipalities who were doing business as usual,” she said.

“Groundwater is a dwindling resource beneath our feet,” warned the judge. “It’s time for the suburbs to understand there are responsibilities to using what is an asset for everyone today and for future generations.

People need to step up and push for this. The aquifers will go dry.”

Water restriction put township in tough spot ST. PAUL — At a status hearing April 26 before District Court Judge Margaret Marrinan, Township attorney Chad Lemmons relayed a decision by the Town Board to terminate a water supply agreement with neighboring North Oaks. The township had planned to stop sending water to the eastern part of North Oaks in two years, knowing it could not meet the 55-gallon per capita residential limit if it shared water. They can meet the obligation at 75 gallons per capita per day.

Lemmons said the township is also considering a moratorium on new construction, similar to the action Lake Elmo has taken. “It has been difficult to do any long-term planning when the township doesn’t know how much water will be available, he told the judge. “We don’t have guidance, so we are guessing.”

He added that township leaders are waiting to see what happens with the surface water issue.

With the new language clarifying the judge’s order (see accompany story), Lemmons told the Press the Town Board can reconsider ending the water agreement with North Oaks. “Cutting off water is not what we should be doing for good business,” he added.

He had many interesting jobs there, filing 22 patents, and played his violin in the 3M orchestra. His favorite assignment was managing director at the 3M Harlow Laboratory in England. Steve was a man of faith and served the church in many capacities. He was a wonderful storyteller, a quick wit, loved sports, spending time with his family and friends on the shores of White Bear Lake. He will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts. Mike was born to Elsie and Daniel Kennedy on Nov. 19, 1947 and died on April 19, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and nephew, Kraig Kennedy. His successful career included roles as real estate salesman, broker, developer, and consultant for both residential and commercial properties. Upon retirement in 2002, Mike and Bubs moved to California and then to Arizona. Mike always had a positive attitude and a unique way of scrutinizing situations. His youthful and mischievous spirit and generosity were evident throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed talking often with his abundance of friends. Mike had a sharp wit and could always make people laugh — while he laughed hardest at his own jokes. Per his wishes, there will only be a small, family service. Born July 19, 1929, Bud lived all his life in Mahtomedi, his Utopia. He was writing a book of the city’s history, treasuring all the memories of its past.

Fred was an artist who loved drawing and painting since childhood; ultimately graduating from MCAD and earning a BS degree from the U of M. He worked for many years as a graphic designer for 3M and after retirement was an avid award winning water colorist. He volunteered in many capacities over the years including the Mahtomedi Planning Commission, 3M, St. Jude’s and the "M" Club. He enjoyed skiing, golf, dancing, poker, traveling and collector cars. His ‘55 DeSoto was his pride and joy and he was very active in the DeSoto Club, traveling around the country to their conventions.

30 Years of the St. Croix Pottery Tour CORINNE STREMMEL STAFF WRITER

The St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour has both national and international fame and has attracted a variety of talented artists and pottery lovers right here in Minnesota for 30 years.

According to Will Swanson, who began the pottery tour with Robert Briscoe in the early ’90s, the St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour is a blueprint for other artists’ tours across the country.

From May 7-9, seven studios will host around 60 potters from around the U.S. during a three-day pottery sale across the upper St. Croix Valley.

“It’s an easy driving tour, and you drive yourself from place to place and all the studios are just a few miles from each other,” said Swanson.

The tour, traditionally held over Mother’s Day weekend, historically has attracted between 3,000 and 4,000

visitors. Swanson expects the number to grow, since the tours have been “online-only” tours over the past few years due to the pandemic.

Swanson and his wife, Janel, will host eight potters, each with their unique art style.

Some, like Becky Lloyd, are pottery tour regulars and have received national recognition for their work.

“These are the best potters in their region,” said Swanson.

“Some of these people have a huge following.”

Many of the potters in attendance have been celebrated for decades and are well established in the art world, but Swanson is looking for a younger crowd of potters to keep the tour going.

“I’m trying to renew the event by having younger guests from other states,” said Swanson.

A newcomer this year is Tara Wilson, who is based in Montana. Her work consists of forms that are curvy and

figurative. Wilson hopes to establish a pottery tour in Montana that’s similar to the St. Croix Valley tour.

“I’m interested in how the whole thing operates. This is kind of our role model, and I’m excited to experience it from the inside. I’m really, really honored to be invited, and it’s something I’ve aspired to,” said Wilson.

Works like Wilson’s range from practical to ornamental, and visitors to the tour will see a variety of pottery styles.

Swanson, whose personal work focuses on practical pieces, knows there is something sentimental to using a piece of pottery carefully crafted by an artist in an everyday setting.

“My experience is that people somehow come in contact with handmade pottery. That’s usually how it starts,” said Wilson.

People can appreciate the handmade work of a potter, whether it’s a cereal bowl or a casserole dish.

“They realize the variety of handmade work is extremely wide. They can find something to fit almost anyone’s color choices, from things that seem mundane or something made by a grad student who is taking some artistic license on something that looks nice on the shelf,” said Swanson.

past, Swanson has heard folks say how much they enjoy just getting to meet the potters and putting a face to the artwork.

Mahtomedi Girls Hockey to seek partnership It looks like the Mahtomedi girls’ hockey team might have a goalie after all.

But only if they can find another team with which to form a partnership.

The Mahtomedi girls’ team will lose all of its goalies to graduation this spring and will have no younger girls in the system old enough to stop pucks for the high school team when the season starts next winter.

The Mahtomedi School Board at its April 28 meeting heard from approximately seven hockey moms and dads before discussing the possibility of joining forces with another varsity girls’ hockey team. Aaron Forsythe, Director of Student Activities, addressed the player shortage and what needed to be done about it.

Most of the parents spoke in favor of a partnership. Of concern for those parents in favor of a hockey co-op was the physical safety and mental health of younger girls playing against girls four years older than they in physical development and experience. Parents who didn’t want the partnership cited the greater opportunity for all girls to play at the varsity level.

With only 27 or 28 girls returning to the varsity team next year, the team is still short approximately three skaters and three goalies, Forsythe said. A healthy program consists of 30 to 36 players from Grades 9-12, but not Grades Seven through 12, he said.

Board Member Kelly Reagan, a former high school hockey coach, said that when

the high school level takes girls from its U15 team, it can leave the U15 team reeling, not knowing who will be on the team. The younger girls often struggle emotionally at the varsity level, and the sport becomes a safety issue, especially for a goalie, she said.

If Mahtomedi doesn’t field a girls’ hockey team next year due to low numbers, it will leave some 28 girls looking for a place to play hockey.

Mahtomedi is not the only girls sport with participation issues. Currently, there is a trend of fewer female athletes in all sports. Participation numbers in many other girls sports are half the size they were a decade ago, Forsythe said.

There are currently 24 co-op teams among the 65 Class AA varsity girls’ hockey teams, the division that Mahtomedi plays in.

Reagan recommended the district find what works best, ask questions and find a good partner. “And make sure there are opportunities for the girls to play and find the right fit for the athletes,” she said.

A cooperative would require a minimum two-year agreement at the outset and can be reviewed every two years. At that time, either side could dissolve the agreement, if its program returns to healthy numbers.

It should be noted that although numbers are low at the varsity level right now, youth numbers are very healthy, Forsythe said.

The next step for the varsity girls’ hockey program is to identify the partner

that is the best fit for a mutual agreement and which competing conference schools must approve. But before the matter gets to rival schools to approve, the school board must first vote its approval.

The board conducted the following additional actions at the April 28 meeting: The district secured its financial compliance levels by unanimously (5-0 with Board Member Paul Donna absent) and formally approving Policy #790 — Post Issuance Debt Compliance Policy.

School district auditors recommended the board approve this policy to ensure that the district is in compliance with federal reporting and disclosure requirements as it relates to district debt.

Students will have school buses to ride in next year. The board gave approval for its transportation consultant to enter into negotiations with First Student for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years, after the district received two proposals on April 7. The district couldn’t retain its contractor for the past six years because Illinois Central was unable to find a facility for its buses. The district expects to pay more for busing services, but part of the negotiation process is to keep the increase as minimal as possible.

O. H. Anderson Elementary School (OHA) staff will start to pack up in preparation for the start of a major facilities improvement project. Principal Susan Prather gave an update on the project’s timeline. As soon as the kids go home for the summer on June 6, everything, including desks, books and

cabinets, will be packed up by June 10, and major work will begin the following Monday. On June 13, demolition will begin, with construction beginning the next day. Substantial completion is expected by Aug. 19 when staff enters the building.

In 2021, the four-year graduation rate remained stable at around 97% and continues to be among the highest in the state, Superintendent Barb Duffrin said in her report. This achievement rate is thanks to staff efforts during the pandemic, she said. “Not all students graduate in the same way and in the same time frame, so it could be higher,” she notes. “Our 2021 seven-year graduation rate is among the top in the state at 97.5%.”

The district continues to move forward with the secondary schedule redesign, following the second draft of four schedule options – two for the middle school and two for the high school. The schedule options were presented in two rounds to families, secondary students, staff and secondary student feedback groups. The Design Team will use feedback from the second session to revise the options, Duffrin said.

Half-million price tag for city’s section of South Shore WHITE BEAR LAKE — The segment of South Shore Boulevard from McKnight to the city limit west of Bellaire Avenue won’t be officially transferred from the county to the city until fall, but the reconstruction project is moving along.

City Council authorized the city manager to enter into a cooperative and maintenance agreement with

Ramsey County for the $9.45 million project at its April 26 meeting. Most of the cost, $7.73 million, will be paid by the county. The city’s cost participation is estimated at $538,650.

The reconstruction is part of a joint construction project with the county to redo the boulevard and extend the Lake Links trail around White Bear Lake. Sanitary sewer will also

be extended to 13 properties that currently have no access.

The city portion of the project will be financed through a combination of the construction fund, sewer fund and special assessments to benefiting property owners.

The county is responsible for preparing a right of way acquisition plan showing easements and other

property interests required for the project and acquiring the proposed easements and right of way.

A jurisdictional transfer agreement for the roadway will be brought to City Council when the project is completed.

Baseball: Mahtomedi rolls past South St. Paul, Simley, Tartan Mahtomedi baseball enjoyed a 3-0 week, defeating South St. Paul 12-2 Wednesday, Simley 14-0 Thursday and Tartan 6-5 Friday.

Ethan Loss was 7-for-11 with three doubles, seven runs and five steals. Sam Garry was 6-for-10 with a homer and seven RBI’s. Billy Arlandson was 4-for-8 with three steals and five runs. Roan Appert was 4-for-7 with six runs. Seth Nelson pitched a two-hit,

five-inning shutout with 12 strikeouts against Simley.

Dom McCullough threw 6 2/3 innings in the other two games, allowing just three hits and two unearned runs. Against Tartan, Appert’s sacrifice fly scored Arlandson with the game-winner in the last of the seventh.

Garry socked a two-run homer and Jordan Hull had two hits and two RBI’s.

ZEPHYRS SPORTS BRIEFS Girls golf: Zephyrs 3rd, 4th in MEC The Mahtomedi girls placed third and fourth in back-to-back Metro East Conference meets last week. The Zephyrs took third in an 18-hole meet at Oak Marsh in Oakdale Wednesday with 355. Simley won with 339. For the Zephyrs, eighth-grader Lexie McGrane placed third with 78, seventh-grader Reagan Buhl sixth (tie) with 88, senior Abbey Johnson 13th with 94 and sophomore Sadie Stembridge 14th with 95. The Zephyrs were fourth in a nine-hole meet at Hidden Greens in Hastings on Thursday with 200.

Against Roseville, Reese Sanger notched two goals and two assists, McKenna Cunningham two goals, and Clara Schimnowski, Annie Tanner and Evelyn Cegielski one each. Tennis: Zephyrs nab 3 MEC wins Mahtomedi picked up three Metro East Conference wins last week, over Two Rivers 5-2, Hastings 7-0 and Tartan 6-1, improving to 8-2 overall and 5-0 in the Metro East. The Zephyrs used three different lineups, with seven different players picking up singles wins and 10 winning doubles matches.

Girls track: Zephyrs tie Simley for first in MEC mid-season meet A senior-led Mahtomedi girls team tied for first place among eight teams, winning seven events, in the Metro East Conference Mid-Season Preview on Thursday at St. Thomas Academy.

Mahtomedi and Simley each scored 142 points, followed by Two Rivers 94, Hastings 93, Hill-Murray 64, South St. Paul 58, North St. Paul 46 and Tartan 42.

The Zephyrs scored heavily in the pits. Jacquelyn Ong won long jump (15-11) with Zoie Centers second (15-9). Erin Steinman won triple jump (33-5 1/2) with Ong second (32-11 1/2). All three are seniors.

Seniors Anna Holst won the 200 dash (26.88) and Cambelle Waldspurger took the 800 (2:35.14).

Breanna Elbers took second in the 400 (1:05.26) with Ella Prose fourth (1:06.65). Anna Mosely was sixth in the 200 (28.69) and eighth in long jump (14-9). Centers was sixth in high jump (4-6).

In relays, Mahtomedi won the 4x100 (53.82), the 4x400 (4:24.47) and the 4x800 (10:36.86), and took fourth in the 4x200 (2:00.99).

Student exhibit showcases visual expression Hundreds of attendees crowded into the Ford Family Gallery at the White Bear Center for the Arts for the recent opening of the 2022 High School Visual Arts Exhibition, featuring the work of students from several area high schools and also home schooled students. The exhibition returned to a live opening this year after being held online during COVID. This year was the largest in the seven year history of the exhibition, with 141 pieces, in a variety of mediums, selected for inclusion. The exhibit will be on display in the Ford Family Gallery through June 1.

Four days after getting tenrunned by Stillwater, White Bear Lake toppled the No. 1 ranked Ponies 2-1 with Claire Griebel delivering a walk-off two-run single in the seventh last Wednesday.

That left the three ranked Suburban East teams with one loss each. Through Saturday, Stillwater and Forest Lake were each 8-1 and the Bears 6-1.

Stillwater drubbed the Bears 11-1 on April 27.

“Stillwater has been one of the best teams in the conference for a long time,” said Bear coach Kaity Wightman, “and whenever you can battle with a team like that, it feels good.”

Bear ace Chloe Barber gave up a home run to Gaby Favor in the sixth, but finished with a three-hitter and 10 strike-

outs. Stillwater’s Kiera Meyer took a two-hit shutout into the seventh.

Jordyn Meyer lined a leadoff single. Lily Glendenning’s bunt was fielded by Meyer, who threw wide to first base.

With bases loaded and one out, the Ponies had their outfield drawn in. Griebel sliced a fly ball over the right fielder and two runs scored.

The Bears snapped an eightgame losing streak against Stillwater. Last year, they were 14-4 overall and 0-3 against the Ponies.

The Bears added a 15-0 win over Mounds View on Friday.

Abby Taylor went 4-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs. Barber threw a one-hitter with 16 strikeouts in six innings, ripped two doubles and knocked two runs. Heidi Barber was 2-for-4 (triple, three RBIs).

Meyer was not the pitcher in that game, and currently plays shortstop on the Bears softball team. The Press apologizes for the error.

Elijah Ebbert, White Bear Lake track cocaptain, won the 100 and 200 meter dashes, in 11.40 and 23.30, respectively, at the Ron Sass Invitational. The senior sprinter’s best 100 time is 11.09. In the 20-team indoor meet, Ebbert was second in the 60 meters and anchored a 4x100 relay victory. “Elijah is highly motivated. Track is his only sport. He is one of the best 100/200 athletes in the state,” coach Tom Paulson said. “Everyone stops what they are doing to watch him run.

Asked at the City Council meeting April 26 if space continues to be a challenge, Kindsvater replied, “Yes. Lines are out the door on busy days but shorter than they were prepandemic.”

Hours have changed for those who may not know. The bureau, located at City Hall, stays open until 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It is not open on Saturday.

A drop box is available outside the entrance for people who want to avoid waiting in line.

Transactions like tab renewals, duplicate titles, duplicate plates, DNR renewals and more can be handled through the drop box.

Other services of note: Passport services have closed. Information about online passport service and local agencies can be found at travel.state.gov. Also, the compliance deadline for Real ID has been pushed back to May 2023.

Ramsey County faces pushback on Bruce Vento Trail extension

Ramsey County is calling upon the citizens of White Bear Lake for input on the latest extension of the Bruce Vento Trail. This extension would potentially connect Whitaker Street and County Road J by having a section of the trail run along Bald Eagle Boulevard and Hugo Road.

A town hall meeting was held on April 21 in White Bear Lake to gather public opinion about the trail’s extension. During a Q&A portion of the meeting, several Bald Eagle Lake residents brought up a number of concerns regarding the trails’ extension into their neighborhood.

Common concerns from residents included noise and increased traffic to the area.

Many Hugo Road neighbors like Mike Sachi feel that the trail isn’t a good fit for the residential neighborhood.

“Neighbors have trespassing concerns on the property, safety issues, environmental impacts as well as increased volumes from the new high school that is being built,” said Sachi.

rather than having the county trying to shoehorn a trail into a quiet residential neighborhood.”

The portion of Bald Eagle Lake was selected by the county based on a feasibility study conducted between 2018 and 2020 to evaluate potential safety and cost impacts of different route options.

The county had originally considered a potential route along portions of the railroad in White Bear Lake, hoping that active parts of the railroad would be abandoned in the future, but after conducting the study, the county decided that a trail along this route would run into safety challenges.

“The feasibility of this route had a lot of expense involved with it too that made it non-conducive,” said Ramsey County Director of Parks and Recreation Mark McCabe. “We have reached out to BNSF railway and have heard nothing about whether or not this section of the railway will be abandoned in the future.”

McCabe explained that the Bald Eagle Lake portion of the trail was selected based on previous community engagement in 2019, where the Bald Eagle Boulevard route was considered

the preferred route.

Bald Eagle Boulevard resident Tim David is still holding out for a route that possibly stays near the railway.

“It’s not a fit for the neighborhood.

Regional trails are typically placed on abandoned railways. Perhaps it is too early, but I say it’s better to wait until the short segment of the railroad becomes abandoned,” David said.

According to McCabe, this isn’t the only part of the trail that reaches into a residential neighborhood, noting that a section of the trail from the south end of Phalen Lake in St. Paul to Beam Avenue in Maplewood runs through residential neighborhoods on an abandoned railway right of way.

Still, neighbors are concerned about increased traffic to the area.

“We want a quiet neighborhood, so why invite thousands of others into our neighborhood’s streets?” David said.

The county does intend to promote the trail, and has had 280,000 visitors to the trail based on a 2018 study.

“We see this section as being more of a recreation-based trail. We consider what are visually appealing things that would be nice to ride through,” said McCabe.

As contention builds, the actual construction of the project is still 8 to 10 years out.

“These projects are quite extensive.

There’s still a lot of planning involved, and applying for funding. It’s a very long process to build a regional trial,” said McCabe.

Though construction is still a few years out, neighbors like Sachi feel that they weren’t informed soon enough about the trail and had very little voice in deciding whether or not the trail would be built, expressing that a “no trail” option should have been presented.

The project is still in its initial design phase, and the county is continuing to seek feedback from the White Bear Lake Community. Residents have the option to fill out a survey to share their input on the trail. The survey can be found at https://www.ramseycounty. us/content/bruce-vento-phase-2-survey and is open until May 8.
