Sport of water skiing celebrates 100-year anniversary BY DEBRA NEUTKENS STAFF WRITER

A century ago, a Minnesota teenager strapped on a pair of curved pine boards, grabbed clothesline for a tow rope, and probably yelled something like “hit it” to his brother Ben, who was driving the boat. The day was June 28, 1922, and the teenager was Ralph Samuelson, 18, who was the first person to water ski on a wide area of the Mississippi River near Lake City known as Lake Pepin. Perfecting the technique took a few days, but Samuelson soon discovered that leaning backward with ski tips up met with success. That moment in Minnesota history a century ago has had a global impact: millions have taken up the water sport for both recreation and competition. On a local level, the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society is compiling material for an exhibit called, “Bears on Boards: 100 Years of Water Skiing in White Bear,” as part of Manitou Days. Executive Director Sara Hanson said the exhibit will highlight notables who have made

Get ready to fish

For serious anglers in Minnesota, the fishing opener is a sacred holiday and the unofficial beginning of summer—a day that roughly half a million anglers eagerly await each year. Some think of it purely as the walleye opener, but the season opener includes a number of species that reside in Minnesota waters, such as northern pike, trout, and—in some areas of the state— bass. This year’s fishing opener will occur one week later than usual on Saturday, May 14. That’s because Minnesota state statute requires the opener to occur precisely two weeks before the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend.

Deputy retires after 26 years with sheriff’s office Deputy Brian Goodspeed has retired from the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office. He will be missed. “Brian is a special, unique person and is so well-liked by his co-workers, members of the community and schools,” said Jeff Ramacher, undersheriff of public safety service for the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office. “He had an uncanny ability to de-escalate situations on certain calls and was the one who calmed the waters. That's what

he did best.” Goodspeed always wanted a career in law enforcement, but it took him years to get there. “My dad was a Minneapolis police officer and I anticipated going into law enforcement, but the year I graduated from high school they required a two-year degree in law enforcement,” Goodspeed said. “I did not like school and I wasn't a good student, so I went into the printing business.” Goodspeed worked at American Financial Printing in Minneapolis for 17 years. While he was there, he received

a grant to attend a college course. “I took a college class called 'How to Study,' and it was a great course and I enjoyed it and decided to take more courses,” Goodspeed said. “Then I thought I should go back to what I really wanted to do, which was law enforcement.” He was married at the time, and busy raising six children —Rebekah, Ruthann, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Hannah and Brianna. It took him approximately eight years to get his degree. SEE GOODSPEED, PAGE 8A
