Purple Line bus route may get a do-over BY DEBRA NEUTKENS STAFF WRITER

WHITE BEAR LAKE — A member of the corridor management committee for the Metro Purple Line said he was “pleasantly surprised” by the reception of the group at its first meeting last month. Council Member Bill Walsh is representing the city on the 12-member committee, formed as an advisory body to Purple Line leaders at the Metropolitan Council and Ramsey County. Votes may be taken but are not binding on either the council or county. At a presentation to the committee, Met Council Project Manager Craig Lamothe acknowledged White Bear Lake’s March 3-2 resolution opposing buses coming into the city. The response was to develop potential route modifications. City leaders raised concerns over the number of weekday bus trips per day (89) and the size of the buses (60 feet). There were also concerns over the disruption of station and dedicated lane infrastructure on existing roadways and adjacent businesses. Met Council is considering two potential routes, Lamothe said, as reported earlier by the Press: • Truncate the bus rapid transit (BRT) line somewhere along County Road E between Highway 61 and I-35E and add a “Purple Line Connector” between Maplewood Mall and downtown White Bear Lake, or • Truncate the BRT line at Maplewood Mall Transit Center and add a connector between the mall and downtown White Bear. Connector buses would likely be 40 feet or shorter and electric. The alternatives would still connect the northeast metro to the Metro Transit system and remain consistent with the project’s purpose and need, Lemothe noted.

Road construction season commences Minnesota is again living up to its reputation of having two seasons, winter and road construction. Among the local road construction projects currently underway is work on a stretch of CSAH 12 from East County Line Road to Stillwater Road between White Bear Lake and Mahtomedi. The completed project will provide pavement, safety and pedestrian improvements. See page 13 for more information about the road closures and detour map.

Area salon not your typical wig shop BY CORINNE STREMMEL STAFF WRITER

“Our hair is our crown,” said Kim Schoonover, owner of Indulge Salon. For the last 6 1/2 years, Schoonover has helped cancer patients as well as others dealing with hair loss replace their “crowns” with wigs, all cut, styled and fitted by Indulge Salon. “I just wanted to offer people a safe space to talk about their concerns and come up with a solution to make them feel confident again,” said Schoonover. “When you go through hair loss, it just feels

unfair, and this is something we can do to make people feel confident and beautiful.” Schoonover offers a 90-minute consultation to talk through clients’ goals and find a wig that best matches their biological hair. This element was especially important to Sara Copeland, who was diagnosed with breast cancer this January. “I remember asking my young daughter if she knew what cancer was. and she replied, ‘It means you lose your hair,’ and to me, I didn’t want her to see her mom lose

her hair,” said Copeland. Not long after Copeland began chemotherapy, she set up an appointment at Indulge. Schoonover brought Copeland to a private room in the basement of the salon and showed her the different types of wigs she could use to replace any of the hair she lost. “She was so kind and understanding. It felt like I was there with a friend. I remember thinking, ‘This lady has a heart for this,’” said Copeland. SEE WIGS, PAGE 12
