A LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Whitefield Community,
As we’ve celebrated Whitefield’s 25th Anniversary this past year, I have been struck by our community’s sense of identity. Our identity in Christ has been the focal point of our school year in and year out, and this Christ-centered foundation has blossomed into the many blessings we see today.
Our students are growing at Whitefield and beyond, as the Class of 2022 was accepted into 122 different colleges and awarded $9.2 million in scholarships. We are proud of their passion for learning and service of others ahead of self as they carry the love of the living and active Jesus onto college campuses across the country. We welcome these students into our growing alumni community, and their impact is seen and felt on campus as we enter a new school year.
This school year, our identity in Christ remains constant. The joyful exuberance has filled the halls, and we’ve hit the ground running once again. This semester we’ve already put others first at our 6th annual Great Day of Service. In the coming months we'll pour into new stories and passions during our I Love To Read Week and we will welcome alumni back on campus for Homecoming. At the center of it all, we will strive to glorify Him in all we do. It is the same steadfast identity of the last 25 years, yet we are renewed and reinvigorated in this purpose.
I pray each of you feels and knows this identity in Him as an integral part of our community. Whether you’re a student, parent, faculty member, alumnus, or friend, welcome back. Together, we are more.
In Christ, Dr. Kevin Bracher, Head of School

A Family Traditiom
THE FAWCETT FAMILY: WILL(‘05), CARTER(‘06), JACK (‘34), WESLEY (‘36)
A look at alumni who choose to bring their children to Whitefield Academy and make the WolfPack a family tradition.
8
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your history with Whitefield Academy?
I (Carter) started at Whitefield in 1999, the third year Whitefield was establiahed, at the old campus when I was in 6th grade. I remember riding over to the new campus on the double decker bus for the ground breaking! That panorama picture is hanging in the administration office now. Will started in 8th grade, the first year at the new campus. Founders Hall was finished half way through his freshman year.
I graduated in 2006 and my siblings graduated in 2008, 2011, and 2013. I came back to teach at Whitefield in the fall of 2013 and have been here ever since! That means there has been a Chambliss on campus since the third year of Whitefield! In fact, my dad, Sam Chambliss, has also been involved with Whitefield since the beginning in 1997. He did some of the legal paperwork getting Whitefield started, and he is still involved with Men’s Fraternity on Friday mornings.
Tell us a little bit about yourself now. Will is a lawyer who does wills, trusts, estate, and business planning. He also spends a good bit of his week at home with our littlest children. I, (Carter), teach fifth grade at Whitefield.
Tell us about Jack & Wesley. Jack is enthusiastic and loves coming to Whitefield to play with his friends (soccer on the playground!) and singing the chapel songs. Wesley has been looking forward to at tending Whitefield ever since Jack started and has counted down the days until this past August when he started PreK at Whitefield.
Give us some insight as to your decision-making process when choosing a school for Jack & Wesley. What was important to you?
We selected Whitefield because of its Christ-centered mission. We want our children to get a true biblical perspective in their education because that is the full truth and to sell that short is to not fully educate them well. The White field community is an added bonus and so beneficial to our family.
What ultimately led you to send Jack & Wesley to Whitefield?
We looked at some Christian hybrid homeschool pro grams or university-style schools, but ended up deciding on Whitefield because we wanted them to have the full experience with chapels, specials, extracurriculars, and recess. It’s really the Whitefield community that draws us to this place.
What has surprised you the most about Whitefield as a parent?
The most surprising thing to me as a Whitefield parent is getting to experience the sweet Lower School at White field. Having lunch with Jack for his birthday when he wants to show me off to his friends or his, “aww, mom, can’t I stay at Cub Care longer?!” look when I pick him up. The teachers know and love Jack so well.
Tell us about someone at Whitefield (past or present) who has influenced you and what impact they had on your life.
Steve Hellier took the time to get to know both me and Will. I have loved getting to teach two of his sons. I have also been greatly impacted by Becky Johnson last year as she really knew and loved Jack, and he loved coming to school every day because he was seen and encouraged by her. She made me want to be a better teacher. I have also been greatly impacted by recently retired Jeanne Thon and Libby Miltner for the personal relationship they walk daily with our Father and encourage me to walk closer with Jesus. Rebecca Brown encouraged me a lot when I was a student at Whitefield as well.
The Whitefield mission statement adheres to three values: passion for learning, for others ahead of self, and for the living and active Jesus. Can you give us some insight on how those values learned at Whitefield are carried out in you and your sons' lives today?
David McBride really set a great theological foundation for both Will and me that we referred back to all through college and beyond, which was a great foundation for passion for learning about the living and active Jesus. Jack and Wesley love singing the chapel songs about Jesus and a favorite one is “My Lighthouse.” Jack also loves telling us his Bible verses, and we talk about them at dinner and what they mean.//

AN UNPLANNED PATH
MATTHEW SUMLIN'S ('19) ROAD TO VICTORY
By: Colin Sylvester
The path to a College Football Playoff national championship wasn’t always clear for Matthew Sumlim (‘19). For one, he hadn’t even considered being a kicker until he reached the Upper School at Whitefield. That path began when Coach John Hunter approached Sumlin with a plan: practice kicking for a couple years so that he would be ready to become the starter his junior year.
For a three-sport athlete since 7th grade, two years was a long time to wait, but Sumlin went all in on the mis sion. He practiced hard with the team and would practice kicking before and after the regular practice times. In the meantime, starting kicker William Hellier (‘17) needed a holder. Sumlin jumped at the opportunity to learn and contribute in yet another way. It all paid off - and then some. By the time Sumlin became the starter his ju nior year, Coach Hunter had more news. Sumlin was good enough to kick in college.
As a variety of colleges pursued Sumlin, academics remained a top priority. “UGA is a great school and has one of the best teams in the country,” said Sumlin. “It came down to the opportunity to be on a selfless team like this one.”
16
That opportunity came in January of his senior year at Whitefield, but COVID hit in the midst of UGA’s kicking tryouts. The path forward wasn’t clear. When Georgia football announced tryouts were back the following winter, Sumlin, now a freshman Bulldog, went to work. COVID restrictions still made it tough to practice and prepare for the tryouts in Athens, so he went back to where this path began, Whitefield. With the help of the football coaches and the WolfPack’s long snapper, Charlie Baxter (‘22), Sumlin readied for the tryouts. By the time he finished his freshman year, Sumlin had earned a spot on the scout team for the upcoming fall season. The pitch? Keep getting better, and good things will happen. To Sumlin, it sounded similar to Coach Hunter’s advice five years earlier.
“I am such a big fan of my teammates. I am happy to do the work that makes all of us better, and the rest will take care of itself.”
Every practice, Sumlin studies and emulates the kickoff schemes for the upcoming opponent so his teammates are ready each Saturday in the fall. And, as hoped, some good things have happened thanks to Sumlin’s teamfirst approach. The path to basking in the confetti of a national championship with his teammates wasn’t always clear. In the middle of all the self-improvement as a kicker, Sumlin embraced the opportunities to serve others at Whitefield and beyond.
“Matthew never ceased to be one of the most encouraging and supportive presences in our program,” remembers Whitefield Head football Coach Coleman Joiner. “While most kickers’ Friday nights are spent only waiting for their opportunity to impact the game, Matthew could always be seen alive and engaged on the sidelines lifting up his teammates.”
In hindsight, the path has been clear for Sumlin all along: others ahead of self, and the rest will take care of itself.//

It takes $4.7 million per day for Chil dren’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) to operate. While doctors, nurses, and medical staff may be the face of CHOA, Whitefield alum Avery Evans Fiveash knows that her work put ting others ahead of self ensures that non-profit hospitals and clinics have the funds they need to open their doors for another day.
AVERY FIVEASH ('13): DANCING FOR CHOA
By Alyson Taylor
It’s a hot, sunny day in August of 2009 as freshman Avery Evans begins her first day at Whitefield Academy. Recently moved to Atlanta, Avery is adjusting to her new house, new city, and new school. She walks into her French class where Upper School French teacher Meghan Magee greets her with a smile. Ms. Magee will encourage and challenge Avery throughout the year as Avery experiences her first foreign language class. Later in the day, Avery meets another new Whitefield freshman, Carter Fiveash. She and Carter would begin a relationship the following year that continued through Upper School, college, and beyond.
Avery fondly remembers her time at Whitefield. “I was given the tools and opportunity to do so much. I didn’t have to fit in a certain box. I hadn’t done much cheerleading before Whitefield, but I joined the cheer squad and loved it. I was also able to participate in Whitefield musicals. The ability to bond with so many different students was such a blessing.”
After graduating from Whitefield, Avery attended Auburn University. She enjoyed the core classes at Auburn, but it was in the extracurricular Dance Marathon campus organization where she found her passion. The Dance Marathon organization exists as a part of Children’s Miracle Network to provide a way for high school and college students to raise money for local non-profit children’s hospitals. Through 5K races, bake sales, and spreading the word on campus and through friend groups, Avery and her team found many ways to encourage others to give. At the end of the year, the Dance Marathon keystone event is a high-energy culmination of hard work where the teams reveal their final fund raising total. In all, Dance Marathon organizations raise over $34 million annually for Children’s Miracle Network.
While many of her fellow Dance Marathon friends were new to the world of fundraising, children's healthcare already held a special significance to Avery. In her sophomore year at Whitefield, Avery’s younger brother Preston was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The Evans family started getting involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and encouraged others to donate toward the research that will one day find a cure for juvenile diabetes. Avery discovered that she had a talent for sharing information and inspiring others to take action. In college, her sorority also collaborated with St. Jude Children’s Hospital to raise money, and her passion for pediatric healthcare grew deeper.
“I want students to understand that if they’re passionate about changing kids’ health, they don’t necessarily have to get a medical degree. CHOA wouldn’t function without the non-medical staff.
22
We have the CHOA Foundation, but we also need a great mar keting team, public relations team, recruiting team, human re sources, information systems and technology, security - so much has to happen at CHOA for us to open our doors and function properly. I want to help people - there are so many ways to do that.”
Avery decided to pursue a marketing degree with plans not to sell a product, but a cause: pediatric healthcare. After graduating from Auburn and completing an 8-month-long internship with CHOA, Avery had the opportunity to step into her dream job, acting as Senior Program Coordinator to local Dance Marathon teams at high schools and universities. Avery stays busy meeting with the leadership teams at the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State University, Emory University, Lagrange College, and the University of North Georgia, helping them set attainable goals and training them on the leadership skills needed to operate such an organization.
“The largest Dance Marathon is at the University of Georgia, called UGA Miracle. It’s the largest student organization at UGA, one of the oldest Dance Marathon programs, and raises over $1 million annually.” With young college students tasked with running high-dollar organizations on such a public stage, Avery assists them in keeping their focus on their main goal: putting others ahead of self through fundraising.
Looking back, Avery recognizes that many of the skills she uses in her job now began in Whitefield classrooms. “I so appreciated my teachers at Whitefield challenging me to develop public speaking skills and honing my writing and communication. Much of my day involves talking to groups of people, and it is so important to speak clearly and be efficient and mindful of others’ time. When you’re sharing complex information about hospital or fundraising strategies, you have to present it in a cohesive way.”
Avery shares her passion for putting others ahead of herself and paves the way for others to do so as well. She also encourages graduating seniors to get involved in their colleges and universities. “Think, what do I enjoy doing? What am I good at? That’s where you’re really going to make a difference. That’s how I figured out what I wanted to do with my career: through my extracurricular activities. I discovered what kind of people I enjoy hanging out with, I pinpointed my stress symptoms, and I was really only able to find those through my extra involvement.”
In December 2018, Avery married her high school sweetheart, Whitefield alum Carter Fiveash (‘13). Outside of work, Avery enjoys running in races, cheering on her Auburn Tigers, and traveling around New England. She and Carter have two pets, a black lab (Tuck) and a cat (Cisco), both named after their favorite vacation spot, Nantucket Island.\\

ON
A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
i M pAct of G ivi NG
Dear Whitefield Academy Community, Woven throughout the Bible are stories of how generosity is a simple act.
“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is good.” Hebrews 13:16
The last 25 years we have been witness to Whitefield building and expanding its now 100-acre campus. It is the simple, yet powerful and transformational act of generosity of this community, that has been instrumental in providing facilities and programs that empower students to learn and realize their Godgiven abilities. Generosity has allowed Whitefied to transition from building a strong foundation in our first 25 years to a phase of cementing a legacy for generations to come.
Each year, we ask our families to pray about how they will support Whitefield. This year, our families were fervent in prayer and giving.
Giving highlights from the year include:
• 98% parent participation for Whitefield Fund
• $1M+ raised for Whitefield Fund to support faculty/coach wish-list items and enhancements to the on-campus student-experience
• Record giving to Georgia GOAL
• $1M+ raised at the 2022 Legends Auction to endow faculty/coach stipends and increase professional development funding
We are grateful for the simple act of generosity that is furthering God’s Kingdom to ensure Whitefield can bolster Christian families in rearing young people who go on to college and life with a passion for learning, for others ahead of self and for the living and active Jesus.
God is good.
God bless,

The Whitefield Academy 2022 Legends auction, held April 2 at the Chick Fil-A College Football Hall of Fame, was by all measures, an unprecedented success. The event raised just over one million dollars, almost doubling the amount from the Going Places 2019 auction. With an expanded sell-out crowd of over 550, the general con sensus is that it was a pinnacle event in terms of the fabulous and fun location, the overall vibe and excitement, and certainly for generosity for the cause. From the beginning, God was in the details of the planning and execution of this wonderful night.
The College Football Hall of Fame was reserved as our venue for the event originally to be held in 2021. After being postponed for a year, 2022 turned out to be a perfect year to entertain in an iconic Atlanta sports center. Recent championship titles awarded to the University of Georgia Bulldogs and our Atlanta Braves stirred extra pride and ex citement to be celebrating in a venue that honors champions. The CFHOF is a uniquely vibrant location for such an event, but as our numbers grew, we scrambled to accommodate our expanding crowd and the many auction items to be displayed, in an active and open museum on a busy Saturday. With items and people scattered over 3 levels, and dinner and programming set up on the field, the logistics had to be planned down to the minute. Yet God was in the details and everything worked exactly as planned and without undue stress for the Auction committee. Credit is also rightly due to the CFHOF team and management for supporting our every whim. Thanks to Kimberly Beaudin, the CEO and Whitefield mom for accommodating and managing our event with excellence.
The Whitefield Academy Magazine 41
Our theme for the evening was “Legends, Honoring - Building – Inspiring”. This dovetailed with the venue, Whitefield’s 25th anniversary, and our fundraising cause to benefit enhanced professional development and stipends for the faculty and staff who commit to enhanced responsibilities beyond teaching. It was an easy leap to view our teachers as the legends, champions, and MVPs of our school. Honoring these men and women who are the lifeblood of our mission statement, and who build up our students every day, and inspire them to become legends in their own right - became the impetus for great generosity. It became clear that our community truly loves and values our faculty and coaches!
Many have asked why this event felt different, and had such spectacular results. We can all appreciate the pent-up desire to gather and celebrate after the trials of 2020 and 2021. The buzz of excitement for dressing up and experi encing the legendary Whitefield community was palpable. Many new families have committed to Whitefield in the three years since the 2019 auction, and they were drawn to our mission statement in part due to our administration’s handling of the pandemic and also due to the desire for a Christ-centered education in the rapidly changing culture we live in. But even those valid explanations do not account for why attendees paid double the amount for gift cards and experiences, why a puppy (named Legend!) was purchased for a record-setting amount and was given away to another family who tearfully wanted him, and why unprecedented sums were donated to the fund-a-need paddle raise for professional development. Praise be only to God, who saw fit to bless the evening and the efforts of those who organized it, and who inspired our community to great generosity! //

A tradition started in 2001, rising seniors who are elected to student government select a Bible verse that is special to them. This verse becomes the school verse for the entire school over the course of the year. Such a special Whitefield tradition is representative of the Christ-centered emphasis on community that Whitefield holds dear as a central part of it's mission.

Dress up theme days, battle of the hallways, and an all-school pep rally are just a few of the reasons why students love Spirit Week. Celebrated in the fall for football and in the spring for basketball, these weeks remind us why we love the Pack!
Spirit Week(s)
A foundational step in leadership growth and college preparation through opportunities for co-curricular learning, intentional engagement, self-reflection, and skill development, Upper School students are prepared to lead themselves and others during college and beyond.

Teachers Who Have Spanned The Decades
One of the staples of WolfPack athletics, these students faithfully show up for every game to cheer on the WolfPack and bring school spirit.

There’s no better way to serve our community than through prayer.
The Whitefield Parent Prayer Group: Two or More is based on the Mat thew 18:20 scripture “Where two or more gather in my Name, I am there in their midst.” Every week, parents are invited to gather on campus in a caring, faithful prayer group that focuses on the needs of our school and our community.

Who doesn’t love a free outdoor concert? Lawn chairs, picnics, and popcorn are what make this annual event a Whitefield favorite. And did we mention the amazing jazz music performed by our very own Jazz band? It’s an event you don’t want to miss.
