Shaag is a six-look capsule collection containing fifteen pieces, featuring exclusive original print designs, hand-made accessories, and custom textural applications by Aoibha Doyle. The capsule marries themes from the swinging Sixties and the serene landscape of the Australian outback. In collaboration with the Australian Wool Association and Think Positive, a digital print was created from a woollen texture sample which was then printed onto a cotton/wool tweed, creating the core ‘Woolly Fabric’ for the collection. A shaggy woollen texture has been made via a rug tufting machine. The shaggy texture has been applied to two looks in the collection, referencing a key component of Sixties and Seventies interior design, the shag carpet. The Sixties are a nostalgic time for today’s youth, somehow creating a yearning for a time that the current young generation has never even known. The decade was a powerfully expressive time in fashion, creativity, and lifestyle, causing a boom of young people known as the ‘youth quake’. Shaag looks upon these influences as well as the silhouettes and patterns seen in the Sixties to form beautifully nostalgic pieces for young people to live vicariously through. pierre cardin’s architectural wonder ‘palias bulles’ has been another muse of inspiration for shaag, with circular cut-outs and smooth cellular shapes reflected into the collection. The earthy Australian landscape trope has been carried through with the depiction of mushrooms. These have been incorporated through pleated fabric manipulation and anomaly print design. Shaag encapsulates twin influences of the Australian landscape and lifestyle, with the pleated ‘Lamella Print’ representing the Lamella ribs that hide under a mushroom’s cap and the ‘Enoki’ original print design on lycra to include a sportswear component.
