Get back in touch with your body and mind
Inspired by the intricate forms of human muscles and brain neurons, I designed a brick cooling system that mimics the organic flow and connectivity of these natural structures. Just as muscle fibers interweave to enable movement and neurons create networks for transmitting signals, the brick design incorporates a series movement and orgain form. Crafted from terracotta, a material known
for its breathability, the bricks are designed to allow air to flow through them. As the air moves, the terracotta facilitates the evaporation of moisture, releasing cool air into the surrounding space. This design not only draws on the natural forms of the human body but also harnesses the cooling properties of terracotta to create an efficient, sustainable system for regulating temperature.

The design for this holistic living and wellness retreat aims to create a seamless environment where individuals and team athletes can reconnect with their bodies and minds through movement, reflection, and growth. The space integrates a spacious living area with an open-plan layout, featuring natural materials like wood, stone, and soft textiles, along with large windows to invite nature indoors. A dedicated Pilates studio fosters body alignment and strength, with deaign aspects of Aboriginal design wallpaper and reflexology pathways. The yoga area is designed for serenity and grounding, with soft, earthy tones, and abundant amount of natural light, promoting deep connection through breath and ones body. Throughout, the design draws inspiration from the human body’s anatomy, incorporating flowing forms and abstract muscle patterns, while Aboriginal art adds cultural depth. Natural elements, from biophilic design principles to greenery and natural lighting, enhance the sense of peace, grounding, and mindfulness.
Caitlin Twain is a wellness coach, yoga and pilates instructor and bodyworker who wants to open up a wellness get away to help individuals get back into tune with their bodies. At the age of 20, Caitlin battled Lyme Disease and a thyroid disorder after being bitten by a tick. After trying everything such as doctors’ advice, fad diets, and supplements, the real healing began once she started listening to what her body needed and wanted. Focusing on mindset, rest, breathwork, movement, and a healthy microbiome transformed her health. For 18 years, Caitlin has helped others heal.
“We must all learn to tune into what our own unique body needs to heal and thrive” quoted by Caitlin Twain. The space is to be created to allow one to feel at peace with their mind and body and really inviting the idea of a seamless flow between the outdoor environment to the indoor space. The design must include natural elements to continue the idea of tranquility and wellness.
In January 2020, the site at 222 Buffys Lane, Budgong, NSW 2577, was devastated by the catastrophic bushfires in New South Wales. Following this tragic event, plans were set in motion to create an architectural masterpiece. The design is anchored by earthy, raw materials, including, concrete, zinc, glass, timber, and steel. The site is located on a vast 70 acres in Budgong, NSW, bordered by Mount Scanzi and Morton National Park. Walking trails have been created, which pass creeks, waterholes, and waterfalls. Each trail loops back to the house, ensuring that visitors most of the time can still see the house or the nearby Duffy’s Lane, reassurance that they won’t get lost.
This site was selected for its contemporary Australian architecture, characterized by modern design elements that seamlessly blend with natural materials and elements. Its location was chosen for its natural geographic features, offering a unique opportunity for people to connect with nature.
Site and Construction Description- There are many different components when designing and constructing structures in Australia including, National Australian Building Environment Rating System (NABERS), Green Star Rating, Complying with the NCC, The J1V3 Assessment Process and depending on the building or structure the correct certification. Due to the site (222 Dufeys Lane, Budgong 2577) being a renovated residential home with a pool a Building Sustainability Index (BASIX) certificate is required. This property features a single story dwelling, an in-ground swimming pool, and a detached outbuilding. While there are no flood or heritage overlays affecting the site, a bushfire overlay associated with Vegetation Category 1 has been identified on the site.

The interior showcases a harmonious blend of natural and engineered timber, stone, metal, and glass, all thoughtfully designed to frame stunning views of the surrounding mountains and bushland.
Soul and Soil celebrates Australian culture through the lens of Aboriginal art, weaving narratives that resonate with the land. By incorporating traditional patterns and motifs, the aim is to create a space that honors the rich heritage of Australian culture while reflecting the beauty of the surrounding environment. The design will seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor elements, using natural materials such as timber, stone, and native flora to invite the landscape inside. Large windows and open spaces will enhance this connection, promoting well-being. Sustainability is at the core of this project, focusing on ecofriendly materials and energy-efficient solutions that minimise the environmental impact. As a design that promotes wellness, it emphasises nature’s restorative qualities, resonating with the principles of well-being. Reflexology pathways will be integrated into the layout, promoting physical and mental health while serving as a unique design element.
