CON

High society is a collection that merges Hollywood glamour and streetwear influence to better understand contemporary fashion. According to Heckmann(2021), after the rise of Hollywood’s golden age, well known actors and celebrities had an influential impact on society’s perception and standards of fashion. As described by Zimbio staff(2021) Hollywood glamour had an element of “derssing up” that is no longer as commonly seen in fashion today.

CEPT

High Society was inspired by the idea of communicating what Hollywood glamour now looks like in a more contemporary light. Elsewehere(2019) stated that streetwear has become the future and reality of high fashion. Taking a more contemporary approach to the old Hollywood aesthetic, this collection aims to create a modern streetwear glamour. Throughout the collection both these two conepts are met. The notion of old hollywood can be communicated through the use of evening wear silhouettes, elements of draping and glamorous styling.

In light of having a more modern approach, the collection focuses on utilising sustainable fabrications. This has been achieved by deconstructing upcycled garments such as tshirts, sports jackets and denim along with incorporating plant based fabrics such as a plant based leather. Through the use of the thrifted sportwear fabrications and upcycled denim a sense of sport / streetwear is achieved. The target audience of this collection is a young woman aged between 18-35 who has an appreciation for historical influence and is attracted to clothing with a more casual aesthetic. The collection aims to target a clientele similar to brands such Diesel, Y/ project, Off White and Heron Preston.

ODY

Created from a high quality yellow cactus leather, the oversized bomber jacket with quilted lining is one garment included in the first body. Made from nopal cactus in Mexico, the cactus leather is highly sustainable and durable vegan leather. The leather jacket has a cargo pocket attached from a strip of webbing on one sleeve, along with chunky black hardware and curved panel lines throughout the garment. The jacket is unisex and can be styled with any of the four bodies. The mini dress underneath the jacket is made from a royal blue scuba base with boning in the bodice. The dress has been coated in draped upcycled tshirts. The thrifted shirts have been cut up and hand sewn onto the scuba base. A chunky exposed zip can also be seen on the back of the dress that is fastened mid way, leaving the wearers back particularly exposed. Throughout the collection both aspect of Hollywood glamour and streetwear aimed to be met, through this design, the sporty t-shirts paired with the glamour styling and draping techniques achieves both concepts.

This body has been styled with a royal blue knit balaclava, black and yellow sunglasses and black fingerless gloves. The balaclava has also been paired with a cap that has been covered in upcycled denim. The boots that are styled with this look have also been coated in upcycled denim, remaining t-shirts and toggles. This outfit was one of three that had been featured on the Melbourne fashion week student runway.

ODY 2

Body two includes a long sleeve wrap dress that has been made out of a thick jersey base. Similar to the first body, the dress has been coated in upcycled ripstop sports jackets. The thrifted jackets have been cut up and hand sewn onto the base of the dress. The dress opens from an invisible zip, on the side underneath the arm. The dress follows a similar colour palette to the first body, continuing the bright yellow seen in the leather jacket along with mixed reds and blues accompanied by elements of black in an attempt to compliment the black hardwear in the first body. Similar to body one, this outfit focuses on merging the two concepts of Hollywood glamour and streetwear, the styling and draping technique paired with the sport aspect seen in the jackets achieves both concepts.

Body two has been styled with a royal blue knit balaclava, yellow sunglasses and red and black sports gloves. The blue balaclava has also been styled with a blue cap. The outfit has also been styled with a dark red sock paired with bright red ankle boots. This outfit was one of three that had been featured on the Melbourne fashion week student runway.

ODy 3

Made out of upcycled tshirts, the dress within the third body has two straps over the shoulder with a low cut front and back neckline and side cut outs. The dress has been made by cutting up tshirts and sewing them together. The edges of the dress have been binded together using the hems of the remaining t-shirts. Underneath the dress, the outfit has been layered with a cropped, short sleeve, high neck yellow t-shirt. The shirt has been made out of a lightweight merino wool in a similar colour yellow that is seen throughout the collection. The outfit has also been layered with a heavy weight denim bandeau that has been worn over the tshirt and underneath the dress. The bandeau is fastened at the back with a hook and eye. The bandaeu also has a carabiner attached to the back with red grosgrain hanging off it. The dress silhouette was inspired by a basketball jersey, this paired with the cotton tshirt and denim fabrications has created a sport/streetwear element. However the length of the dress paired by the high neck tshirt and styling communicates a sense of elegance and glamour.

Body three has been styled with a red knit balaclava, red sunglasses and black gloves. The balaclava has been paired with a navy rolling stones cap. The outfit has also been styled with metalic silver heels. This body is one of the three looks that has been featured on the Melbourne fashion week student runway

ODy

Designed for men or womenswear, body four includes a navy denim jean. The jeans have been made out of a medium weight navy denim and have an oversized fit. One side of the pant has a large cargo pocket with a webbing strap hanging down, in order to complement the cargo pocket in the leather jacket. The other side of the pants has an overall that can either be worn hung down or worn over one shoulder. Elements of hardware such as an overall clip and sliders are also featured on the webbing straps of the pant, similar to the hardwear in the leather jacket and dress fastenings. Paired with the denim jean is a cropped short sleeve t-shirt and an oversized t-shirt. Similar to the dress seen in body three, both t-shirts have been made by sewing the remains of cut up thrifted shirts together. The jeans can be styled with either tops based on the wearer’s preference. The silhouettes of this body aim to portray more of the streetwear element of this concept, however the glamorous styling attempts to communicate the Hollywood glamour aspect.
