GULASEL KARATAEVA
BOUTIQUE HOTEL
Growing up in a Kyrgyz family and migrating to Australia at a young age, Gulasel has cultivated an identity that aims to fuse diverse cultural influences. This fusion of backgrounds and experiences has become a cornerstone of her design philosophy. Her passion lies in creating designs that not only reflect her unique journey but also resonates with others on an emotional level. Gulasel believes that design should delve beneath superficiality and dive into the intricate layers of individuality. Embracing this belief, Gulasel intertwines various elements of culture, embracing the rich tapestry of her heritage as well as the vibrancy of others. Her drive to blend the old and the new, weaving together colours and textures, creates spaces that evoke genuine connections. Gulasel’s design ethos avoids the generic and embraces character, eclecticism and purposeful minimalism. She aims to master the art of infusing spaces with personality, while adhering to the belief that every element should serve a thoughtful and deliberate purpose. In essence, Gulasel’s design journey is an inspiring narrative of cultural fusion, thoughtful creativity, and emotion. The story is delivered through a broad spectrum of eclectic elements, colours, textures and shapes, that reflect the essence of who she is, while inviting others to connect with their own identities.

BOZ HOTEL
The Kyrgyz yurt, known as the “boz-ui” in the Kyrgyz language, stands as a symbol of the nation’s rich nomadic heritage and enduring cultural identity. The yurt’s design embodies a perfect marriage of simplicity and adaptability, consisting of a collapsible wooden lattice frame covered with felt, providing a portable and practical housing solution. Its circular shape represents the harmonious coexistence between man and nature, emphasizing unity and community. The history and cultural significance of the traditional Kyrgyz yurt serve as a wellspring of inspiration for my design of a modern yurt structure crafted predominantly from glass, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the breathtaking surrounding views. This modern adaptation aims to pay homage to the timeless principles and layout of the traditional yurt while infusing it with a contemporary and transparent aesthetic. Respecting the traditional layout of the yurt, my design preserves the fundamental arrangement, positioning the kitchenette area to the right, ensuring convenience and practicality while symbolizing warmth and nourishment. The central sleeping area, an esteemed space opposite the entrance, takes precedence, echoing the cultural reverence for familial unity and respect. In celebrating the core values of familial bonds pivotal in Kyrgyz culture, the design deliberately forgoes multiple rooms within the yurt suite. Instead, it offers an open-plan space to underscore togetherness and shared experiences, reminiscent of the communal ethos found in traditional yurts. The transparent architecture harmonizes the connection between the inner sanctum and the natural world, fostering a sense of unity with nature, celebrating tradition while embracing the modern comfort and awe-inspiring panoramas.
