CONCEPT STATEMENT

“Rippled: (of water) form or flow with a series of small waves on the surface” A term that directly describes the gentle ebb and flow of waves upon the surface of land, igniting intense visual imagery and meaning to each individual. According to Gooley, T (2015), “ripples are the instant effect of wind on water and they die down as quickly as they form” whilst “waves and swell” are a result of a stronger wind or “the pressure difference accross the curved surface of the water (Faber, T, n.d.) The term can have a variation of personal meaning and related anecdotes from person to person. Whilst not only a description of the movement of the ocean, ripples can be created upon “a sandy seabed subject to wave action” (Blondeaux, P and Vittori, G, 2020). This creates an abstract pattern of lines, engraved into sand, awaiting the moment they are encapsulated by a wave, reset back to its initial state. Inspired by these notions is a five body womenswear collection, entitled “Rippled”, targeted towards young adults between the ages of 18-25. Heavily inspired by fishermen workwear and the fisherman archetype, as well as the ocean itself and the way it can be represented through visual textures, silhouettes and colours.
