ANALYSIS

HISTORY Motebong Lodge sits on land once occupied by construction teams during the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. Originally a camp designed for hundreds of construction staff and families, it prioritized energy-efficient accommodation for harsh winters, with north-facing insulated houses and anthracite heaters. The camp was self-sufficient, hosting essential facilities like a tuck shop, clinic, and schools due to limited local resources. Travel in the highlands relied on horseback or aircraft before the completion of better roads in 1990. Lesotho had a dense network of airstrips, primarily serviced by Basutair and later, Lesotho Airways, carrying everything from passengers to live chickens and produce. The introduction of roads transformed travel and commerce, leading to the decline of aviation services and local businesses reliant on difficult-to-access regions. After the completion of the water transfer tunnels in 1997, the camp lay dormant until 2007, when it housed mining staff from Lesotho Diamond Corporation until their collapse in 2008. Negotiations in 2009 between Motebong Tourism Investment Holdings (MTIH) and the Lesotho government resulted in the camp’s transformation into a tourist facility. The aim was to preserve its historical construction camp essence while adding modern comforts. The lodge stands as a blend of historical significance and contemporary comfort for guests to enjoy while experiencing the highlands’ history and beauty.
